12,000 years. As you heard from the last speaker, we are still here today now but i am going to do today is, wampanoag its a culture of people, one of 1000 indigenous poachers across north america. Wampanoag we are different from the other than 1000, it could be language. It could be diet, it could be the house and we lived in. Will we all have, is how we think about life in general. We spent all forms of life, human life, plant life, animal life, we dont put ourselves above or below that. That is one thing we have all in common. I do a lot of teaching, right . I ask people, what we used to become from . The human race. So we should all respect each other. That is the rule of thumb for me. Like i said, we have been here for 12,000 years. That is me up there with my lovely rate truly. She teaches language right next to me. But i am going to do, guys, i will bring you to a year, 16 13, before any major interruption in our culture. I am going to bring you to our new years. You think about our new years, right . A lot of peoples new years start on january 1st. Our new years started everything comes to life. Think about it, when did everything come to life . Spring time, right . That is when the birds start chirping. Thats when the leaks come out. Thats when the herring soaked around. That makes sense. Everything is new again. Everything is so different. But at the new year, we think mother earth, we think the creator of having another earth, it is not guaranteed. We do a lot of dancing. We do a lot of feasted. We do a lot of socializing. But once that happens, we know we have to get to work. These are the types of houses we live in the summertime. In the spring, and the summer. This is the spring and summer we live in a Single Family home in the summer sites, we need a space for planting. These right here are cocktails, a capital is a water plant. We have been doing this for years, every thing we do at the museum, we do ourselves. So we get the cattails. They will last three to five years. They are waterproof, they act like a natural final. And these houses would hold one family. It is different that a european family back then. European family is has been, wife, good. Our family has that has been, wife, kids, aunts, grandparents. You are looking at three or four generations in one house. That is one big thing that is different. We would have englishman come into her houses and say, this guy has five wives. Maybe, but maybe not. [laughs]. Then again relay with a look at that. What they are looking at a sisters, grandmothers, aunts, so that is what my job is, look at these primary sources and look at down i wouldve means to the wampanoag people on indigenous cultures. Those are the houses we live in the summer, and we do during the summer. This is our planting field, Everybody Loves cords, means, and squash right . I call them three sisters. Who takes care of the fields . The woman. The woman are considered to be the givers of life. They also give lift to mother earth. So you look at the planting field, right . I dont know if you can see the mound, but that will do a mound of dirt, that is simple symbolic of a woman stuck when she gets life. When you plant corn . You have to wait for different kinds of nature. When chad bush at the blue, whats the source you wait to run. You until the next new wait for the next new moon. The reason you do it on the new moon is moon. That it draws gravity up. It helps that corn seed grow. So you plant corn, corn take nitrogen out of the ground. You plant your beans next to it and the bang beans will add nitrogen back into the ground and wrap around the top of the corn. You plant your squashes, your watermelons and your pumpkins on the bottom. They have a large leaf and will shade the ground to keep it soft. Vegetables for us native people would represent anywhere from half to 2 thirds of the diet. Wampanoag makes up a large part of massachusetts. Parts of rhode island and all the islands. Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard. Let me mention some names to you, because back then we had over about 70 70 wampanoag communities. Nantucket sounds familiar . Many points it . Pull casket . See conch . Nationally . These are name places in town names, but theyve always been wampanoag communities. At one time, we numbered over 100, 000, today its about 12, 000, and we will get into that a little later. So that is a planting field. What is next . Women are considered to be the givers of life. When did the kids do during the spring and summer . Tatcha is one of my daughters there. This is her in this picture when she was 11 years old, maybe 10. Thats her younger sister, storm, with her. What shes doing is picking sue mac. You pick those berries, you boil them up, and that right there has 3 times as much when immensey than oranges does. Kids were allowed to be kids. They helped out a little bit, but they had fun, they played games, they went swimming, they had running races, they joked around. A person can go 3 for 5 names in a lifetime. As you changed as a person, your name fit who you were. You did not take your name yourself, we still had medicine people in the Community Give us names depending who we are. Tatcha means one who lifts up. Its not because shes physically strong and all that, but she wakes up in a good mood almost every single day. When she wakes up in a good mood, she raises the house so everybody feels good. You give a name depending on the person. Kids were given more responsibility as the matured. This is me and my lovely wife judy. We do a lot of fishing back then. We still do today. Still a big part of the culture. We saw a lot of men going ocean fishing, freshwater fishing. A lot of the women would get the shellfish like lamps, muscles and crabs. The biggest fish we would go for, im not sure if it ever was here, but large parts of wampanoag country. You know whats the biggest fish was that would go between the rivers and ocean back and forth . No . 20 or 30 foot in length sometimes. Somebody said it, i think. Sturgeon. Sturgeon. Its a big fish, right . We go fishing for these fish at night time in our boats. Our boats would range anywhere from 9 foot one man boat, 2 boats big enough to carry 40 men. We have 3 different recordings of europeans seeing 40 men boats being sailed near nantucket island. Not paddled, sailed. We paddle as well. We pulled it along the shore. But for the sturgeon, we go out at night time with torches at the end of our boats. The light of a torch will attract sturgeon up and they will flip over on their belly and then we would spear them. A lot of the times, the fish got bigger than the boat, so you could not put them in the boat and had to drag them to the shore. Salmon was another fish. We had so much flounder. You would walk down at low tide ends here flounder. We have so much card that you could walk across their backs to cape cod. Lobster, not a big deal. We used lobster for fishing bait. Times have changed, right . We had so much lobster, we could go down at low tide and pick them up. Im not saying we did not eat them, but it was not common. You go back 100 years ago, and lobsters was fed to prisoners in jail every single day. The prisoners had a big uprising and said, we are sick of this, we dont want any more. So there was a lot in there was a lot in massachusetts that said you could only feed prisoners lobster twice a week. More than that and it was considered inhumane. Not a big deal. When captain was embarrassed because all they had to give was lobster. Today, it is a different meaning. We did a lot of fishing. The men are considered the takers of life. That is different than the women who give life. That is why we do the majority of the fishing. After harvest time, we think about going inland. We want to go away a little bit from the ocean, i know its hard to do in nantucket, but you try to find shelter near the more would see area to get protection from the wind from the ocean. Inland might be a half mile or a mile. These are the houses we live in. You heard the names before, long houses. They are bark covered houses. Normally during the winter, these houses could be anywhere from 100 foot long, to one of the biggest footprint of the house we found, this footprint of this bark covered house was 300 foot 320 foot in length and 60 foot in width. I tell kids if you do not know what that means, think about a football field. Thats how big this house was. The frames were made out of cedar. The outside bark normally would have been chestnut and the palm. We dont have those trees around here anymore. We use tulip poplar today. We used to use a lot of ash. The men did the hunting. Like i said, the men are considered to be the takers of life. We hunt for the deer, for a big game. There was so much deer around here at one time, i heard,. On the mainland we go for blackberry and mousse and big game. Small animals, do you guys like the taste of skunk . Anybody . Thats a good answer right there. Never tried it, right . Skunk is considered to be a wampanoag delicacy. How do you catch a skunk . Very carefully, right . [laughs] you get 2 boys. One boy would be in front of these conch distracting him. You get the other boy to sneak up on him from behind and grab his tail and lift him off the ground. In order for us country spray, he has to be on all fours putting pressures on his hind legs to release those stink glands. You get him up in the air and he cant do that. You have a club, you bang him over the head and you very carefully cut him open and take a stink glance out. I say carefully because you puncture those thin glands and you might not be welcome into the community for a while. Ive heard recently though, i have not tried it, but some elders say you take that gland of these conch and break it open and rub it on your arthritis and it works. I dont have arthritis yet, they dont sell it in drugstores either. What we do a lot in the winter is a women do a lot of the weaving. We are known for our weaving. The wampanoag people. Some of our weavers our best in the world. Some of their work is down at the smithsonian in washington d. C. As a relative of mine and her work is down in the smithsonian in d. C. So how do we make strange . A lot of you guys say you had string . Yeah, we had string. We make string. We use different plants. We use milk weed, dog vein, tree bark. We take those stocks after they are dead, we pull them out of the ground and open them up, we take the inner fibers out and rub them together on our leg. 1620, they noticed wampanoag women making strong so fast there i could not keep up with them. Then we would die it with different types of berries and roots for coloring. We have small bags as you see here, and we also had large bushel bags to store our dried vegetable so we would have food during the winter. So that my oldest daughter, her name is julia. This has literally crossed every third grade class and the united states. Sometimes i walk into the third grade class, and they are playing a video. It is called the wampanoag way, google it. I play the father in it. I am just in 17th century skins. When i walk into the classroom, and see a boy watching the video on the screen, he sees new walking in. We he says, you are storms that. I say i am. It is a moment. All of these houses, right, we have bending. We do not sleep on the ground, we have furs on the bed, we have matte on the bed. The houses get big, round shape. Our houses, 60 70 degrees. Rule of them, when you are making these houses, i build these myself, every ten houses have a fire put on the inside, that is just to keep you are on the winter. It is a round shape, you cannot really see on the walls, but we have bull rush mats on the walls. Bark, interior frame and then you have mass then you have that gap, and the with the hot house is shaped, i dont shape, the heat is going to rise, go underneath the mat. It forces to keep going in the middle, and i had the warm air carry on the surface. When europeans got here and they see our houses, they said our houses are sworn during the winter, that they had a children running make it into the winter and jumping into the snow. They get quite warm. We lived like that for thousands of years, we went through that cycle. Fall, spring, and then we celebrate the new years again. We come out in our family groups alone. No need for the winter, the more communal. If i went to community during the winter, it can hold anywhere between 300 to 3000 people. Before disease hit. Now, that was before any major interruption. That is the 13 moon cycle, real quick. That a 16 13, all right . One thing i want to say real quick, is you hear the term lost survival from made to people, how did you go survive back then . Well, we have been doing this for 12,000 years. Okay, you just dont roll over and say oh, jeez, where am i going to get food today . There is a system already set up, generations long before, that people knew how to fish. So that i said, we call that 16 13, okay . Lets move to 16 14. There was trading going on. The first european creatures out here was recorded in 15 24. The trade started the blooming in the early 16 hundreds. Back in 16 14, though, when trading happened, when french and dash was a lot of beaver pelts, thats with the house are made out of. But, whats happened in 16 14, there was an english captain thomas hunt, he came down the coast. Remember this day, 16 14. He came down the coast, he went to an area called plymouth today. It was a thriving Wampanoag Community with over 1000 people. Thats how you describe yourself down there, if you are going to pucks it, and you say what are you, they will not say wampanoag people are not expecting you to say wampanoag country. Describe the Wampanoag Community they are from. They say i am from buttocks it when thomas came to pituxit, he took many of those lanes. This happened to our people to. This is six years before the pilgrims arrived here. He took 19 pituxit, somewhat deceased ham. He took eight knots it. Brought them to space, so them there. And one of those guys that were sold, his name was squanto. From i i hear he gain some kind of, status he learned a lot of english culture, he knew thao to speak english fluently over those five years. But what happened to squanto, there was a wealthy man who funded all of these trips, he was asking from who was from these area. They say squanto is. Where is he . He is up with captain mason. They say go get him, i want to go on another adventure. They sent thomas turmeric to go get squanto. He has not seen his homes in 16 14, he has picked up newfoundland in 60 19 from thomas dermot. They come down the coast, stop in the island which is off main, a chief in his own language. Then you have to speak english, you a lot of the english kept since back then. By name. So he dealt with a lot of traders prior. They kept going down the coast, but when they were going down the coast, in 60 19, they saw something extremely devastating. The mood devastating thing that has ever happened to our people, disease. There was a major epidemic that happened between 16 18, when squanto was over england. This played, the skin turn to yellow. People got opens sources and their body, and died. It without the need to population along the coast. Anywhere from 70 to 90 , it with them though in two or three years. That played as far as we know its not get a lot of people on the island, and pituxit. Thats a lot of people were protected from that Darius Coombs plague, but we know about the plague over the years hepatitis, skins on the source. Disease control came out over ten years ago. With that is wampanoag, we believe the french trade ships coming over a, had a rat on the trade ships. And the fetus of the raskin to the water system, causing liver disease, that is a theory is right now. I always say this every time i talk, you can put whatever name you want on, does not matter to me. I do know, it was the most devastating thing to ever happen to our people. So as they were coming down the coast with squanto, they come to pituxit, and they realize pituxit was devastated. Imagine that squanto coming that back home, he found all of this people are dead. Will that change you as a person . I think so. The end of going to the vineyard. There is a leader in the vineyard in now, he was also a captain and the slave and 16 11, over it england. He made it back, that. How he made it back was and 16 14 they were asking him to, is it cold where you are . He was a chief, he was not dumb. He was probably thinking, yeah there is gold. If you bring me back home, i will tell you where the gold is at. In 16 14, they brought him back home. And thats when he yelled out something in his native tongue, they enlisted not understand. A lot of these men come to the beach, they attack the ship and he had a chance to jump over and swim to shore. He made at home. He sees dermot coming, and another ship coming in 60 19, that is about five years. You think these people are coming to get me again. So there is another fight of the brics out, germany gets injured quite badly. Squanto is released, we dont know how. And they end up in a community of they think the great wampanoag leader. Like i said 70 wampanoag communities. What we know for sure, he was the leader of the biggest and strongest Wampanoag Community. What is known as brisk go today. So squanto they end up there. Okay, lets fasttrack to 16 20. Pilgrims are arriving. They finally settle in plymouth, and december. 16 20. They had a very bad year that winter, a lot of people died. From what i hear, february was the deadliest month. They are building their homes on the mayflower. The subtle there because there is good water, clean out already. So 40 miles west of plymouth, he hurt about these people building homes. When we were used to, we were always used to people coming over, europeans coming over here, the only thing we were not used to people coming over and staying. That was different. What made these people different is they brought their women and children, that might have meant a friendlier type of people. We did not know. He probably cousin over and says, you know how to speak english, right . What do you go over to these people, go to pituxit find out what the people able to their homes. He was a leader, he was probably thinking, this guy is a chief as well, he could speak english. And also he is not one of my men. I know where is going to happen to him. So in march 16th 20, comes into the program village is considered to be naked, did not have this kind of clothing on, he had just a bridge clock, he goes in as his welcome englishman. They were shocked seeing an english person a native person speaks to them. He told us about the land, tell them about the area, tell the mother the plague that came through. And he thought about that, white software . We have two good thoughts, right . Wampanoag did not like each other, for at least two or three generations. They have that large body of water, like i said disease is hard to go over water. Then again, wampanoag with the put the numbers, the leader comes out and says i will start to attack. And the community was over the border. Before the chief came out, mass associated. The protector said whats needed each other, it how you felt the english staying here, it was not one universal and your answer. You have to go from community to community. Your brother got taken as a slave, are you going to be happy . No. There were leaders that were not happy. But having a lot of power so it was a peace treaty, he said it says out if you go to war, i will help you out, i want to work you will help me out. We knew that treaty last for over 50, while 55 years. No major conflict of war. Later on in 16 21 that is when squanto kim to live with the columnist, and he teaches them to plant corn. It teaches them how declined port like he said, he was a trans person. He had power. He that in 16 22, in those two years he cause a lot of drama. He said you would better watch out, bradford wants to attack. And then hugo on the right foot and say the same thing. Back and forth, back and forth. He actually sent his men to plymouth with a knife, and he wanted squanto had hands and delivered back to him. Bradford is thinking, i should be doing this, because this could be one of the breaks of the treaty, if one thing doesnt something wrong to another we have to turn that person over. At the same time, there with a ship coming to the water. Governor but gradually was distracted, he said wait a second and he got frustrated and they went back home. Like i saids squanto in started 16 22. And that evening, when he was in one of the houses, they said had squanto a nosebleed that would not stop. They called of indian fever back then, some type of hemorrhaging going on. But when he was lying on his deathbed, he asked the english if he was going to be except into his gods. Although he might have been a change person, he knew what he was doing. This guy right here does not get much preach in the textbooks. If it wasnt because of this guy, history would have been different today. He made that treaty with the english in 16 21. He needs somebody is 40 miles west, you need it in a baschuk ambassadorship out there. Thats when hes on the leader of the little month england. But would help the great deal with that bible. The King James Bible written in wampanoag. We have one of the first additions and our grasp today. Today, we have our language back. My wife is one of the teachers of that language. We teach prek up to the third grade, and every year we are not to agree to. It going back three years ago, maybe two, the wampanoag is taught, still right now in some high schools they accredited course,. Like english, french, and portuguese. That is a cool story, because if you lose your culture, you lose part of what you are. As your identity. We got it back. Lets fast forward to war, nobody likes a war. But the war broke out. I can tell you, in 16 57, and 16 60, thats won two of the first big league to left their lives. So you have the next generation coming up, they did not care for each other a whole lot. Why . Because the thought of land, but people thought of ownership, and the other people did not think of ownership. When culture would build fences around where they lived, the agriculture would walk across when they were in their backyard, and they said you cannot be here no more, this is not yours. I said that is my culture, the native person is thinking what do you mean it cannot be no more . I do not get that. How the cultures are different. That was the reason, and 16 75, the bloodiest war broke out. The bloodiest war pro capital and you england, last month a massachusetts about a year or so. King philip that guy was something to reckon with. He heard about the need that person talking about about him. He took his canoe and paddled out here, confronted this person. He also asked a lot of people on the island to join in on the war. I believe they stayed by themselves, that war lasted about a year. It ended up with Benjamin Church led by king philip. August 12th, 16 76. When they found him, they dismantled him, took his head off, they took his arms off win by lynn. They took his head off, put it on the post for 20 years. There is no good story in slavery, but close to what is going on today. A lot of people went on to bermuda, one of the islands down there. So we as wampanoag people go down and visit them when youre, and they come up and do a paulo in where we live. July 4th weekend, they come around to come see us. They were just up here a few weeks ago, its kind of cool. Lets go a little forward to what happened. There is a Large Population of 400 or so in nantucket, there is a vaccine given to eight people in 1763, 1764 it way out to third of the population of people. You heard gina brian story a little earlier, would happen to the people afterwards . A lot of people were isolated by themselves. I like the people might have gone to Marthas Vineyard. People were spread out. You hear about the last indians and all that, you look at that, that is someones personal limbs. A lot of people say, if it is not recorded is not true. That is not true. That happened. Lets go forward to 1830, you guys heard of president jackson . But 1830, he wanted to remove all of native people on the east coast. West of the mississippi. Oklahoma was one of the states. The reason i bring this up is the ages come around here too, for the wampanoag people. Those people want it as out west of oklahoma. There is one 90 divorce that stood out, his name was john quincy adams, and he said, if you bring those people out west they are going to die. The reason they are going to die is because they rely and seafood in their diet. And they believed him. And thats where we were left alone. Last two, they say indians of nantucket, who knows. Except for some peoples lenses. They died within seven weeks apart. Well still be got here . This is kind of cool right here. We might be doing this next year out here. Seriously. We just got a 40 foot log pine, a 40 foot with pine log, we are going to make a 20 man vote. It is going to be considered the largest port in new england. It involves pequot, wampanoag of course. We left a place called whistle . We left would hole in august 18th in 2002. We left the 6 am, the peak of high tide, we landed we landed a tasha, is there. It was a straight shot, five miles. We had to we made it to get to a fairy lane and made a seven mile paddle it a seven mile paddle. I give the. I give you the elements, how long it elements. The people had to take a shuttle to the ferry, take the ferry over to Vineyard Haven and then take another shuttle to the beach. We had beaten him there by a half hour. They were telling us we are going to have a big celebration. So im very excited. Even a clam bake maybe. I remember paddling in. That day when we left it was really cloudy. When we came in, all the fog broke. Im paddling wondering where is everybody. We were not wearing watches so we did not know how long it was taking us. We saw these people on the beach and suits. Sunbathers from nebraska nebraska. Once we landed, because we were dressed in 17th century skins, the first word out of their maths is do you guys do this every day . This hasnt been done in a couple of hundred years. Like i said, we got this foty 40 foot boat were going to be making. We want to have nantucket involved. We have some ideas, so stay tuned. Leaping up to 1870 here. That is when a lot of communities got incorporated, mine being one, mashpee. What that meant for our people was now its considered to be a township. Were going to give you 25 acres of your own land, but now we are going to tax you on it. So that word incorporation means a different term in my language. So we lost a lot of our land like that. Fast forward into the 1900s. Cape cod became cape cod, a tourist attraction. Where i live in mashpee, nobody really moved there until probably the nineties. Mashpee was the fastest developing town in massachusetts in the nineties. Today, today we have we literally got recognized by the u. S. Government back in 2007 as a people. Okay . What we do today. We have health services, programs for housing, education. We do our powwow, which is july 4th weekend. This right here is a special a dance we did this past powwow. This is a lot of my family. We did it for my fifth my brother who passed away, he got killed down in rhode island in 97. We danced for him. Ive not visited here in about eight or ten years. But my daughter and myself went down to the cemetery up the road where a lot of my families buried. My father was raised here. My aunt was raised here. My grandparents were raised here. My grandfather was the first. So my grandfather moved here from mashpee. Born about 1886. You have my grandmother born 1895 and passed away in 1964. She had a stillborn son in 1919. So i visited the grounds yesterday and i googled indians on nantucket. I came across a picture that i have in my living room. This is my grandmother. The Nantucket Historical site has it right here. There wasnt a name underneath it. Thats ruth west, thats my grandmother. She passed away in 1964 like i said. Yeah, i will do more digging to see where her actual roots are from. This is one woman, ive heard its not mashpee. She had it does not show up in those records. So i will have to keep on digging to see what i can find. Thank you, guys. Any questions .
