Another round of applause for dr. Dumenil. Basketball started in 19. Turning win its First National championship season 53 North Carolina winds it it has won seven National Championships. 18 a sissi championships. Coaches of the year, olympians, and a lot of great nba players. 52 former were drafted in there is great history both from the college olympic and professional leak. You are standing in the museum, the building immediately adjacent to the center for the Basketball Team plays its games. The purpose is to tell the story of carolina basketball. Dean smith, legendary basketball coach had donated his entire collection of basketball memorabilia, which was quite extensive, to the university. This muscular museum is a one place that houses all of that history. We wanted to start off with the uniforms through the years and how they evolved. One of the things people get a kick out of when they see in the museum is the number ten jersey. He threw his he won the National Championship. People are stunned to see that there is red and the carolina basketball jersey. Franklin was the coach at the time. Frank maguire was he wanted to jazz up the uniforms a bit. Put a little bit of a red trim in their. People were really surprised, because obviously through the years, there is not much red and the carolina basketball uniforms. That is the color of one of the rivals and see state, so now the uniforms are blue and white. And thats it. But the blue and white came out way back when and there were a couple of literary societies at the un sea in the 1800s and one colors for white and one color is for blue, and how is how the university of North Carolina was called light blue and white. Basketball really took off in the forties and fifties. It has become one of the most top programs in all of the sports, not just basketball. Basketball is one of those marquee programs. Both in the Atlantic Coast conference and across the country. College basketball has really changed over the years. Probably the biggest change is with immigration. Back in 1910, it was an all white team. The first black basketball was charlie scott. He became a great player of the nba. Hes also in the hall of fame. Michael jordan, a lot of the great successes come from black players. Certainly, it was an away team in 1910. When the ac was formed in 1953, that really kind of set in motion what is now known as a c seabiscuit all, about four years into the ac, North Carolina 1 32 and oh undefeated national champions. B chamberlain in kansas and triple overtime at the National Championship game. That game changed how sports it changed sports in North Carolina, and it certainly changed basketball in the sec. North carolina when that championship game, there were 10,000 people when the team came back at the airport. It was the first televised game, the National Championship game. For a lot of reasons, it really took off in the fifties with that National Championship team. Rosen blue then tommy turns, and some of the great players from that team. From that, coach smith, dean smith, he began his program five years after that. Coach smith became the winningest coach in College Basketball history. He is a legend here and chapel ville. Dean smith was ahead basketball coach from 1961 to 1997. When he retired, he was the winningest coach in the basketball history. He help the United States win back the gold medal at the olympics in 1976. He won two National Championships. More of that. He built a great program. The carolina way play hard, play smart, play together. Those were the themes that all of the coaches that had come after coach smith, coach jeff, earth coach story, william. They all lived by play hard, play smart, play together. That is what coach smith lift by. This sort of that Sports Illustrated is the sportsman of the year. It is one of the top awards and all of sports each year. The excise sportsmen of the year. Coach smith won that in 1997. It was a great story about how he got that artifact from the museum. He had listed on the inventory of items that he was donating to university. We could not find it. We were looking everywhere. We looked at every closet at the smithsonian center. The basketball. Office weve and had his house. Nobody could find it. Then, somebody who had visited his house five years earlier and said, i think i know where that is. So they went to the house. They looked on top of the dining room of a cabinet, and there, tucked between two plants on the top of this cabinet and his house was one of the most prestigious awards that was given in sports each year. The other one that is very prominent is the president ial medal of freedom that president obama bestowed upon coach smith several years ago. That is a photo of his family. Numbers as well as Coach Williams on the right. With the president and michelle obama. People at the university of North Carolina to tremendous pride and coach smith for receiving that award. Certainly, of all basketball awards, but the president ial medal of freedom is probably the top thing. It is the most, to me, the most prestigious artifact that is here in the museum. There are three players who have their own cases here at the carolina basketball museum. Phil ford, who is a great point guard here in the seventies. Tyler hands burrow who is the National Player of the year. He won the National Championship in 2009. Of course michael jordan, for many people believe and we think here at the university of North Carolina is the greatest basketball player of alltime. Michael was good enough to have necessary items for his collection. We also found some great artifacts here from our collection. Our own files. Of letters that coach smith sent to michael. Things that he wanted him to work on, a recruiting card that coach smith kept on every player that he ever recruited, and one of the great things from that cart is first of all on the cart as mike, not michael. On the second is magic jordan. His nickname, magic like magic johnson. Until people saw that, a lot of people did not know that high school, michaels nickname was magic jordan. On the other side of the case, we were very fortunate that michael let us go to his home in chicago and pick out several items to put here in the museum. Whether it was nba allstar game trophies, mvp of the allstar game, National Awards that he wanted North Carolina, one of the items that gets a lot of mention is the recruiting letter that the coach sent michael. Its probably one of the most talked about items because of the Great Respect michael has for the coach and the duke program has gone on to great heights as well. It is certainly one of those pieces that people come in and see and say why is there a letter from Duke University in the North Carolina museum. We are very fortunate. Michael is a great ambassador of the university of North Carolina and one of the greatest players of alltime, not just as a tar heel, but in all of basketball history. Basketball is important not only a u. N. C. But in this state, this region, certainly in our community and here on campus that u. N. C. The ac sea has grown. It was called tobacco road because so many programs were here in North Carolina. Basketball is very important. Its part of the culture. Its part of when you come to school at North Carolina, a lot of people come here come because they want to be part of carolina basketball, mens basketball, womens basketball, carolina athletics in general. Its not the primary reason people come to the school, getting a great education will always be the primary mission, but basketball is part of that. Its part of the fabric of this community, part of the fabric of life in the ac sea. And people do take it seriously here in North Carolina.
