Queen and her family have no housing problem. May be wondering about their next bananas. Not about the price of a nights lodging. They have a ceiling over their heads. What about these fellows . They are sleeping without benefit of a ceiling, rent or otherwise. Men are considering the service. Many were married when they started packing packs or swinging seatbacks. A lot of men are gone through this routine. Sat through the last army lecture, signed the last navy pay voucher, and come home to love and affection. And problems, lots of problems. What do you want . A job . You, private. Do you want to know about schools . Do you have a different kind of problem . Having trouble finding an apartment or house like this one . All brick, six rooms, oil burning. Near all churches and shopping. Convenient transportation. How much rent for this house . , together again after being separated by 3. 5 years of pacific water . Much, mr. Agent . More than you expected, wasnt it . Can you make it, joe . Go back home. Set out again with your pencil and paper and see if you can work it out. Did i say home . Dotties folks are swell. A fellow would like to spend time alone with his wife after 3. 5 years of Community Living in barracks and foxholes. Privateno longer be a but his budget is one thing he would like to keep that way. Sees stuffy when he like this coming along. Joe, yours isnt the only family doubling up. There are lots more like yours. Lots more to come. Weddinglike a nice june with orange blossoms, bridesmaids, and that very special ring. Today, there is something you have to take care of before choosing a ring. Apartment hunting used to be fun. Even the exuberance of youth cant change the fact of the situation today. Its tough. Weve had a time with housing why you were gone. Building materials and labor went to war. The materials that should have gone into housings like this were going into houses like this. Glass, roofing, flooring. Nt, these ws who builds build these were building these. There was practically no homebuilding except in critical production centers, where great war plants sprang up. Threatenedf building to send the rent of houses and apartments skyrocketing. The office of Price Administration stepped in to protect the people by holding the line. Not only on prices but on rent as well. These men may not be able to define stabilization, but skyrocketing rent is something they understand. A lot of subjects are being discussed in american town meetings these days. One thing most people are agreed on is that rent control is a good thing. I think so. My name is johnson. I own a house on 6th street that is rented for luck. Has been for the past five years. Sure, i would like to get higher rent. If i got higher rent, somebody else would be entitled to higher this or higher that. Before long, at that rate, we would be on a roller coaster. Repairs areand landlords big problem today. Materials and labor shortages. If my tenants are willing to understand some of my problems, i can get along with one control. Rent control. The way i figure, what this country needs is a little more golden rule and a little less rule of gold. How do my tenants like rent control . Why dont you ask them . My name is catherine. I live at 109 six street. Mr. Kelly, my husband, works in the post office. I guess hes a salaried man. Theres a lot to be said for being a salaried man. I can tell you, most of us never get rich out of it. What about rent control . I dont know much about it. Except we were paying 39 a month rent before the war and we are still paying it. We just couldnt pay anymore. My name is clark. Radio engineer. Im one of mr. Johnsons tenants, too. What do i think of rent control . Well, mr. , i have a family to support. Anything that keeps down the cost of living is all right with me. Rent control isnt perfect. There are very few rent gougers who insist on bonus payments and phony tiein sales of furniture. By the vigilance of cooperating landlords and other local citizens, as well as government officials, the public is protected. This public, and this public. The shooting more is over. We are still at war against inflationary prices and rent. Next to food, rent is the largest item in our budget. Lifting rent controls while homes are still scarce would break all other price controls. Such a break of the line would be followed by skyrocketing prices and the kind of headache we had after world war i which started when rents jumped 50 after armistice day. Situation, it becomes of the utmost importance to hold the line. Break the line on rent by paying or charging illegal rent and you could help started inflation whose only results would be the kind of depression that followed world war i. Take the lid off of rent and you make it tough for this section of world war ii, coming home to the wife and baby you left, whats in store for him when the sum sun comes up tomorrow . His future income of love and affection may be unlimited. His financial income will be limited. Remove rent ceilings and you deal a blow to the workers of our industrial army, going back into the factories to finish their reconversion and keep us on the road to prosperous, full production. The government has been aiding and always to stimulate the construction of new homes, Building Material prices are being controlled, Building Supplies are being channeled to where they will be of the greatest good and the greatest for the greatest number. Two types of homes that most demand exceedst supply and will for a long time to come. It will be sometime before there are enough of these and these to satisfy adequately the tremendous pentup demand of the war years, years when we stood shoulder to shoulder against evil overseas. Men and millions like them, in and out of uniform, a grant bash against the homegrown evil of lower ceiling rents, bribes, bonuses and frederick furniture racquets. If you are threatened with an illegal eviction, reported to the opa. You will get help. Violation, of a rent reported to the opa. They will act on it. If you have a rent problem, ask the opa about it. They cant find you a place to live. They can give you all the answers to any questions on rent. We won the shooting more by working together. Lets win the battle against skyrocketing rent and inflationary prices the same way. Honored living will not have fought and worked in vain. House of representatives historian and house curator use a selection of artifacts to tell the story of africanamericans in congress. Heres a preview. The story of how africanamericans come to congress in the 19th century is not one that a lot of people are familiar with. We had 22 africanamericans served between 1870 and 1901. 20 in the house, two in the senate. The first africanamerican who was elected to the house is Joseph Rainey of South Carolina in december of 1870. Are another 19 africanamerican members throughout the course of the 19th century. He wasnt actually the first africanamerican in congress. That distinction went to hiram rebel of mississippi who was elected by the state legislature as senators were back in the 19th century. Earlye in to congress in 1870. The high point in terms of the number of africanamericans is the 43rd congress, mid1870s. Theres only six or seven africanamericans in congress at that point. There are too small of a group to drive any kind of legislative agenda. They tend to give very eloquent speeches about some of the major bills, like the 1875 civil rights act. Which, again, is a piece of legislation not many people think about today when you think civil rights. Its 1964. What that bill in 1875 would have done is the same thing that the 1964 build it. It would have granted equality in accommodations, in public travel, in schools. A lot of these africanamericans from the south, South Carolina, mississippi, alabama, got up and spoke on behalf of this bill. Particularly the education provision, which wouldve provided an equal playing field. That provision is stripped out of the bill at the very end of the congress. This is a 1907 print that was colored men who served in the congress of the united states. It was a testament to the persistence of hope in the Africanamerican Community for participation in public life. It was 1907. It will be another two decades before and africanamerican returns to congress. This print was done as a memento. Is a very is done popular method of showing a lot of things on a page. As if it was a scrapbook or photo album. A recognition of those things that happened. Vented in d. C. We acquired it. It may never have left the nations capital, unlike black representation at the time it was printed.
