George wallace, and Richard Nixon did not have any worries, really, about being reelected. He was not going to not be reelected. But he got himself into a position, and it is hard to say nixon had always been known as someone that engaged in dirty tricks. His nickname in the 1950s was was tricky dick. That gives you an idea of in his election, what are the things that happened earlier, well, were not going to go back there actually right now, but one of the things that nixon, its just part of the repertoire of his political operatives. Breaking and entering. Breaking into a psychiatrist officer, wanting to break into the assassin George Wallace gets shot, and the assassin wanted nixon but could not get him. And upon hearing that George Wallace had been assaulted he sent a guy to break into the apartment of Arthur Bremer who was the shooter there and try to plant some propaganda from the 72 election. They failed in this, they had already gotten there, and nixon says thats okay, well try it another time. He says lets break in and plant democratic literature. Lets break into the Brookings Institution to see if he can find anything on daniel ellsburd. He wants to break into the National Archives and steel secret vietnam papers about president jaurnss aides. He thought it would be a good idea anyway. And he had this thing called the enemys list, which was very, very long. I know that people in the 70s that were offended that they were not on the list, they were as big of a critic as anyone else why werent they on the enmys list. And he had his people go round and his opponent was a guy named ed monday must key. The former governor of maine. So he planted rumors that his wife was a drinker and she told dirty jokes. This is what he said. This was enough to get you in trouble politically. They got a fake schedule to him, it screwed up his schedule and he could not get yir on time. They had rumors that they would have the africanamerican mayor of detroit as his running mate. And he called people call voters at midnight and said can we count on your vote . Well no, not if youre the kind of person that doesnt want black people in office. Thats what Richard Nixon did. He wasnt in trouble of losing his job, but it was amusing and perhaps addictive, also. Were going to end with this building, the watergate hotel. Brand new then, really posh and fu funky. People have officers there. The dnc has an officer there and Richard Nixon wants to break into the dnc to see if they have anything on him. Nothing in particular, but just to see.
