This building as the original garrison. It has been added on overtime. This is where it all began. A little oneroom house built for the captain. The original house was built 1722 basedbricks in on a later based on a that her the governor wrote the king. The talked about 25,000 adobe bricks they needed to make and 40 additional laborers they needed to hire. You can see behind the wall at the top there, the adobe brick. That is the original from 1722. The architect found this when they were doing the restoration and decided to open it up so people can see the original wall. Home andthe captains office. Cooking was done outside. We will go this way next. This room and the entrance, and addedom to your left was in 1749. When these rooms were added, there was not a door. This door was cut when the city to the restoration. Would that captain would walk out here into his office. The city cut doors there so visitors would not have to go outside and come back around. This was the main living area for the family. When these rooms were added, the captain moved all of his work items from his first house to his new office at the end. That room became the only other bedroom in the house during the spanish era. Room, diningliving room, cooking was done outside because of the fire hazard. New is the captains office, 1749. Care of business at captains were also merchants. They would have items brought up from mexico, and sell them to the families that lived here. Have some ofbably the items on display here. The braziers were used to heat the room. They would bring in hot coals after the meals had been cooked, put them in the pan, cover them lightly with ash, it would let the heat out to warm the room. It would not be as toasty as we are used too, but it would be better than without it. This room was added in the late 1700s. Sometime between 1763, when the captain died, and 1804 when the building was sold to captain perez. This was added on when captain menchaca and his son on the building. This room we believe was built here to give the captains more space to display the goods they were bringing up to sell the families that lived here. Sold textiles, leather goods, things they could make here in town. Makeinks they couldnt here in town, they would have them brought up for mexico. Having this structure is important. It is not just about the history. I think it is the story people are interested in. Like i said, not a whole lot of this is original. Very little, in fact. It tells a story. People are able to come in and get an idea of what it would have been like and also learn a little bit about time. The story of preservation in san antonio. Accurate, always be it may be romanticized. It may not have been quite what people imagined but it gets people thinking.
