Thank you. Im going to try not to start dancing. But im happy. How are you feeling . Great. Well, detroit, im thrilled to be here with you because i felt better in the last ten mays than i have in months. Do you feel me . And here is why. I decided to jump on and endorse joe biden and you know why . Because joe knows michigan. Joe cares about michigan. He caress about people like michigan all across the country. We know health care is personal. Right . Well, got to tell you, as a 29yearold i became a member of what is known at the sandwich generation. That means i was sandwiched between two generations of my own family for whom i was the primary caregiver. My mom, she was dying of brain cancer, my daughter who was a newborn. That doesnt make me unique because there is a lot of people that are doing that. But i was also fighting an Insurance Company that was wrongfully denying my moms chemotherapy. I have commiserated with joe biden about that because the brain tumor that killed my mother is the same one that took beau bidens life. I know that he and barack obama expanded health care in this country so almost 700,000 michigananders got health care. And if that is not personal enough to many of us here in michigan, ill tell you what is. When we were on the ropes, when our Auto Industry was struggling, who had our backs . Thats right. Barack obama and joe biden. They came to the rescue when people counted us out. When people said let it fail. They said, no, we are in because michigan is important. They had our backs and so today i say lets have joe bidens back. [ cheering and applause ] in a political discourse where it is so nasty, where people are looking to fracture us and divide us, burn bridges, build walls, we need someone who will build bridges and that is who joe biden is. That is what this is all about. You know, i know this we won in 2018 by big numbers. Because why . We showed up. We stayed focus on the dinner table issues. We showed a record of getting things done and we built a coalition. As a democrat i could say this, i am proud of all of the people that put their names on this ballot to run for president. There is a source of inspiration in every one of them. Whether it was Pete Buttigieg or it was or it was elizabeth warren, or amy klobuchar, whether it it was i dont know, a couple of other people that im thinking about. Hold on. Im getting there. What i love about joe biden, though, is he knows how to build a coalition. Im riding with biden and everyone else has a seat too. But it takes coalitions to win. And this Campaign Looks like this country and it looks like this state. And with that im happy to introduce exhibit a. , my good friend who is here to join us all, and tell us why he decided to jump in, my friend the phenomenal senator from new jersey, cory booker. [ applause ] all right. Hello, everybody. It is good to be back in detroit. I think we have something in common, everybody. Because this morning i made it official, i have hereby endorsed joe biden for president of the United States. [ cheering and applause ] i am so proud to be on joes team because joe is on your team. I am so proud to be with joe because joe is with all of us. And when i get here to detroit, i feel like i got some detroit cred because my momma was born right here in this city. My grandfather works on the assembly lines, he was a uaw union worker and im proud of had that. My grandfather used to tell me a story about how he, back in the days that black folks were republicans, that he went out when fdr was on the ballot and told people to turn lincolns picture to the wall because were going with the democratic party. Because had this party is not the party of me. It is the party of we. This is the party of civil rights, of voting rights, of womens rights, of workers rights and unionsment it , it i party of social security, it is party of medicare and medicaid, it is the party that believes in this radical concept, i dont know if you heard of it, it is called science. But something happened. Something happened four years ago. We got to tell the truth now. Our nation, which every generation was trying to make a more perfect union, elected a president that is trying to rip us apart. He looks at the most vulnerable and doesnt try to lift them up, he tries to tear them down. It seems like he takes great pleasure in pitting american against american. We got knock back, we got knocked down four years ago but like this High School Renaissance high school who is [ applause ] whose very mascot is the phoenix, it is time for us as a nation to rise on up because, america, when the going gets tough, we dont shut up or give up or curl up, with we stand up. We speak up. We rise up. And there is one man now who is ready to go to the center of the arena. Who is our best shot to beat donald trump. He is the best one to heal the soul of america. He is the best one to bring dignity back to that office. He is the best one to stand up for all of us in america. And that person is one person. That persons name is joe biden. Oh, but you got to help me now. You gotta help me now. You got to give me some help. Because he cant do it alone. He cant do it alone. [ crowd chanting ] oh, help me now. He cant do it alone. We cant pray that he wins. We cant hope that he wins. We cant wish that he wins. We got to vote him in. So this is on all of you, we know what our ancestors said, without struggle there is no progress. We know what our ancestors said, we have to turn our wording into work. We know what our ancestors have said. We have to turn our anger into action. Michigan, you have the chance to decide which way do we go. Do we go into the low road and into the quick sand where we see the better days of america disappear under the sun, or do we go the high road and get to the mountaintop and proclaim that we are a nation where liberty still reign and freedom is still for everyone and everyone has health care and a criminal Justice System that ends the nightmare with where it is today, as Brian Stevens said treating you better if you are rich and guilty than if you are poor and innocent. Where people work hard all of their lives and cant retire with security. Where people cant afford their prescription drugs so they put aside insulin or their asthma inhalers, this is what we have to do right now, is remember that this nation was built on patriotism and patriotism is love of country. And you cannot love your country unless you love your fell countrymen and women. So i want to ask you right now, are you ready to work for joe biden . Are you are ready to stand for joe biden . Are you ready to vote for joe biden . Well, i tell you what, i tell you what. I hear it now. I feel the energy. But tomorrow it starts. So you have to know something, when i go to the senate and i feel like we got some momentum, i sometimes have to call in the cleanup hitter in the senate. Because i know joe is about to come on this stage but we have one more person who is now she is a rising star in america. She is lightning bringing the light. She is one of our power people. And i think you all have to understand, we are sparing nothing to make sure that joe biden wins the state of michigan. And so, one more voice, a voice of change, a voice of hope, a voice of tomorrow, a voice of today, i bring to the stage the great senator from the state of california, Kamala Harris whats up, detroit . Whats up, detroit . Its good to be back. Can we hear it for cory booker . [ applause ] Gretchen Whitmer [ applause ] all right, all right. We gotta get to work. So wait a minute. I know were celebrating. But were celebrating the work were about to do for the next 24 hours. Right . [ applause ] because we got some work to do, everybody. Weve got some work to do. Michigan, i do believe you are going to make the difference in terms of the outcome of this election. [ applause ] i do believe that. I do believe that. And when i look at this great state, it is the bellwether of what america is doing and what america is capable of doing. And when you put the kind of fight and work that you have always put into investing in the future of america, we will elect joe biden as the next president of the United States. [ applause ] and you know, i believe joe is right when he says that this election is a fight for the soul of america. He is right. You know, you all have heard me say many times, i do believe this is an inflection moment in the history of our country. This is a moment in time where we have to look in a mirror and ask ourselves, who are we . And i think we all know, we are better than this. [ applause ] we are better than this. And what we have witnessed in these last three years are powerful forces that have been trying to sow hate and division among us. They are voices that have been trying to divide us and have us turn against each other. And here is my theory about it. I believe there has been a conscious attempt to try and disillusion us, trying to have us believe that the systems cannot and will not ever work for us, trying to have us believe that we cannot trust our democracy, trying to have us believe that we dont matter. Powerful forces that i believe consciously have been trying to say to you, you dont matter, so dont participate, because you cant make a difference. Theyre trying to say to us, do not trust your government. Theyre trying to convince us that we are alone. But see, what we know is the power is with the people. [ applause ] the power is with the people. [ applause ] what we know what we know is that we will not be overlooked and we will not be canceled. [ applause ] we will not be canceled. We will not be canceled. So thats what this election is about. Its about saying, we know we matter, we know the pow er is with the people. We have not achieved the ideals of our country yet. We all know that, too. But we know that if we stop fighting, we will never get there. And so we fight. That is the strength of who we are as a nation. [ applause ] the strength of who we are as a nation. Has always been about fighting for our ideals. So lets talk about the joe we know. Lets talk about the joe we know. Im going to tell you, i am so proud to endorse joe biden to be the next president of the United States. [ applause ] i believe in joe. I believe in joe. You know, one of the things that is so reflective of his personality is when he says, there is room for everyone. But thats who he is. Thats really who he is. He is an individual who has lived a life of Incredible Service to others. He has made great personal sacrifices in his life. He has experienced in life great pain and great glory. He understands who people are. And you know, ive been in washington, d. C. For about three years now. Im going to tell you something. Donald trump, he he doesnt get it. Donald trump does not get it. He does not see people. The only people he sees are the person he looks in the mirror and sees. He does not see the people. We need a president of the United States who feels, who understands, who is thinking about that father who is at his kitchen table, past midnight, trying to figure out how he is going to get through the end of the month when he is working two jobs and knows he is missing his sons ball game. We need somebody who sees that mother who is sitting in the parking lot looking at the sliding glass doors of the emergency room and knows that even though she has insurance, if she walks through those sliding glass doors with her sick child, she might be out of pocket 1,000 to 4,000 for her deductible. We need a president of the United States who has the courage and the power to see and feel and understand that is a sign of strength and then through that strength lift up the people. That is joe biden. [ applause ] im going to tell you, on a personal level, i got to know joe best through his son. I was attorney general of california. During that there, there was a finding about how the big banks had been engaged in predatory lending activities. Many people here in michigan and around the country lost their homes through that foreclosure crisis. I got toe know joe through beau biden. Its a rare thing to see such a special relationship between a father and his son. It was an extraordinary relationship they had. Beau showed courage all the time and conviction. And he spoke with so much love about the father who raised the man that he was. I know joe. Thats why im supporting him. My final point then is this. Michigan, justice is on the ballot in 2020. [ applause ] justice is on the ballot. Economic justice is on the ballot in 2020. Reproductive justice is on the ballot in 2020. Health care justice is on the ballot in 2020. Environment justice is on the ballot in 2020. Racial justice is on the ballot in 2020. And joe biden is on the ballot in 2020. [ applause ] and with that, i introduce the next president of the United States, joe biden. [ applause ] lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe good to see you all. Lets go, joe hello, detroit thank you all for coming out tonight. I cant tell you how much i appreciate it. Governor, thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for your support. Your willingness not only to support me but to serve as one of our national cochairs and send a powerful message all over michigan and beyond michigan. So governor, when i hear that great line you say, just fix the damn roads, well, lets just fix the country. Because we can do that. You know, just over a week ago, the press and the pundits declared this campaign dead. Get it done, joe then South Carolina spoke. Then super tuesday spoke. The turnout was incredible. Now tomorrow, michigan, mississippi, missouri, north dakota, idaho, washington state, you will be heard. And michigan, im counting on you in a big way. [ applause ] you know, senator sanders likes to say were only going to beat donald trump by generating excitement and turnout. Guess what . On super tuesday, we turned out 70 more voters than ever voted there. Guess what . They voted for us. North carolina, 19 more voters, texas, 40 more voters. I can go on. Folks, look, he is right, were going to turn out, were going to turn out a democratic party, were going to turn out a party that is supported by the backbone of this country. Look, the fact is that this movement we started and all of you are part of is generating an incredible amount of motion around the country. Folks, we cant create a Movement Without there being it powered by people who have been a base of the democratic party. Are you with donald trump . Lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe thats all right. Let him go. Its not a trump rally. Its a trump rally. Let him go. Let him go. Let him go. The bernie bros are here. Let him go. Folks, folks, let him go. Thats okay. Thats okay. Thats okay. Let him go. Let him go. This is not a trump rally. Lets go, joe lets go, joe see, folks folks folks lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe folks lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe folks. Look, this is whats wrong with american politics. Let them go. Folk folks, look, im not worried about it. Its just a reflection of whats wrong with american politics today. Lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe lets go, joe im sorry. Im sorry. Folks. This is one of the things that donald trump has generated. This is not who we are. This is not who we are as a party. Its not who we are as a people. We got a lot of crazy folks around. Look, im sorry, folks. I know. Look, to every person who has been knocked down, counted out, left behind, this is your campaign. [ applause ] we need you. We need you. We want you. We want you to be part of our campaign. So skroin us. Go to joebiden. Com. Sign up. Volunteer. Contribute if you can. But we need you badly. We have to unite this country. If you want a nominee that will not only beat donald trump but will keep the house of representatives folks. Folks, look you want a nominee thats going to beat donald trump, keep the house representatives, win back the United States senate, join us. [ applause ] you want a nominee who is a democrat, a life long democrat, a proud democrat, an obama biden democrat . Join us. You want a nominee who will bring the Party Together and not tear it apart . Join us. Were building on a coalition of the most successful president in our lifetime, barack obama. And were going to do it. Were going to do this by bringing america together, bringing america together of every edthnicityethnicity, race economic station. Folks, look, we are going to unite democrats, republicans and independents of every stripe. Thats what the nation needs. We have to bring the country together. [ applause ] thats going to matter here in michigan, because this is a state we have to win in november. I spent a lot of time when i was vicepresident here with your incredible leader in this town, mayor duggan. He is a hell of a guy. He knows what he is doing. I can tell you, we worked side by side fighting to support this city. Matter of fact, the president asked me, i want you to help detroit. But i dont expect you go live there. Folks, look, i have always believed in detroit like i have always believed in michigan. During the obama biden administration, we launched a great lake restoration project, we invested 2. 5 billion to help mitigate pollution, protect endangered species, habitat throughout the region. The biggest investment in the great lakes in decades. Its delivering incredible results. Revitalization of the waterfront. All across the great lakes. Ladies and gentlemen, were drawing in new businesses. Resurgence of tourism and activities like fishing and b t boating on the lakes. You are the greatest source of fresh water in all the world. [ applause ] ive got a long history of not just talking about what i do but actually delivering for michigan. [ applause ] im so proud, so proud of the campaign of so many michiganers who have joined us from the lieutenant governor, a young politician, whose height is only exceeded by his character and political prospects. Yes, incredible Women Leaders you elected from brenda laurens to Haley Stevens to lisa slotkin. There are some amazing women who helped win the house in 2018. Were going to make sure theyre going to be reelected. Its important you reelect every one of these women. [ applause ] folks, i think we have been delivered to a moment where we cannot only defeat donald trump but we also have an enormous opportunity. If we think big enough and bold enough to build a future this nation needs and deserves, making Health Care Affordable and accountable, ladies and gentlemen, by making it acce accessible for every single american, lowering drug prices, ensuring no surprise billing, protecting rural hospitals that are closing because they cant live on just medicare reimburse emergency. You know, we should be building on obamacare, not scrapping it. Investing billions of dollars to find cures for cancer, alzheimers and diabetes. Beating the nra and the gun manufacturers. Mrsz mrs. Ive done it before and i have beaten them and i will do it again. Leading the world to deal with the climate change. I want to tell you, first thing is i will rejoin the paris accord. Some of the polluters in the United States say, its time to up the ante. Were 15 of the worlds problem. We will get to net zero emissions. The rest of the worltd, if they dont, it wont matter. We have to demand the world come with us. Ensuring quality of Public Education so it doesnt depend on your zip code. Ladies and gentlemen, theres no need for us to leave anybody behind. By tripling the amount of money for title i schools, schools underfunded we can pay teachers the salaries they need to stay. [ applause ] were already short 150,000 teachers today. If we dont do something quickly to make their salaries competitive and compatible, whats going to happen . Were going to be down 300,000 teachers by the time we get to 2025. Look, ladies and gentlemen, m e making sure we can send every 3, 4 and 5yearold to school, not to daycare. When we do that, all of the studies show at the great universities in this state and around the country it increases their prospects of going all the way through school and doing going beyond school. Ladies and gentlemen, reducing student debt, reducing it because its an incredible burden. Paying all those who engage in public service, including teaching, 50,000 reduction in their teaching, in their student debt. Folks, thats who we are. Thats who we have to be. Americas leadership around the world has to change. This is a president of the United States who has embraced every thug and dictator in the world. Pokes his finger in the eyes of our allies. From putin to kim jongun, ladies and gentlemen, we have to repair our alliances. I met every major world leader in the last 40 years because of the nature of my job in the United States congress and vicepresident. I dont know a single one who wouldnt trade places with the United States if they could. Guess what . This president is treating nato like its a protection racket. We will hon are our commitment to nato if you pay me more money. Look whats happening in asia. Were in real trouble. Ladies and gentlemen, we have to bring the world back together as well. They need us. [ applause ] folks, we have to make clear to our allies we can be trusted again. We have lost the trust of so many of our allies around the world. Ladies and gentlemen, you know, we have to also build an economy that rewards work, not just wealth. Because lets get something straight. Wall street didnt build america. You built america. [ applause ] the middle class built america. And unions built the middle class. Unions built the middle class. So, folks, you know, my dad used to have an expression. A job is about more than a paycheck. He would say this, more than a paycheck. Its about your dignity, your place in the community, selfworth. Its able to look a kid in the eye and say its going to be okay. Think of the people in your old neighborhoods who dont think they can say that. The middle class is getting crushed. The working poor are poorer and poorer. We have to rebuild the middle class, the backbone of this country. Ladies and gentlemen, the fact of the matter is that were in a situation where its all about decency and dignity and giving people a sense of who they are. Folks, thats why im a democrat. Thats why i became a democrat. [ applause ] this election, this election isnt a battle for the soul of the democratic party. Its a battle for the soul of america. Thank you, joe. You know, i thought when those folks came out of those fields carrying torches down in charlottesville, close your eyes, picture what it was like when you saw on television their veins bulging, anger and hate, chanting the same antisemitic bile chanted in the streets of germany, accompanied by the ku klux klan, carrying nazi flags, i wrote an article saying that were in a battle for the soul of america. We really are in the battle for the soul of america. Folks, in this most perilous moment, winning means having to unite the country. You cant define for me who an american is based on ethnicity, based on gender, based on race, based on national origin. You cant do it. Were unique. Were an idea, the most unique idea in all of history. We hold these truths to be self evident that all men and women are created equal. We the people in order to form a more perfect union. No other country has ever been founded on an idea. We are. This president , this president is trashing that idea, the way he divides us, the way he is using us to sow division and anger. Folks, the instinct is a lot of my colleagues say the instinct is we have to fight back and be as angry as they are. But president s not only have to know how to fight, they have to know how to heal. They have to know how to heal. [ applause ] folks, we have to beat donald trump and his fellow republicans who are aiding and abetting him. But we cant become like them. We cannot become like them. I refuse to accept the notion that were in perpetual state of war with the other party. I refuse to accept the notion that in fact, the only way we can get something done is by crushing the other team. Folks, we cant get much done if we do that. We have to be ready to heal. We cant become like them. We have to heal our divisions or else our democracy is going to be in real jeopardy, beyond what it is now. Look, our children are listening. Our silence is complicity. Just look at how donald trump talks. The way he treats people. The way he demeans and demonizes people. The way he ridicules people with infirmities. We havent had a president like this, really and truly, never. He has a corrosive affect on this country. The Washington Post reported that were already seeing the reports in schools of kids mimicking the behavior of the president. Thats the phrase, mimicking the behavior of the president. Bullying other kids, using the same kind of language trump uses. Singling out immigrants for ridicule and harassment. What did we expect . Our children are listening. What did we expect . What do we think was going to happen with this man in the white house . When teachers try to deal with this kind of behavior, is it any surprise the kids would say, this is the report of a study done by the Washington Post, well, the president does it . Look, the words a president utters matters, for good or for bad. The words he utters have had a corrosive affect for real. Look, folks, i have said it many times in this campaign, were going to be able to overcome four years of donald trump with a little bit of luck and were going to make sure our kids read about it in ten years from now in this high school as an aberration in history. If we give him eight years, he will change the nature of who we are in a fundamental way. [ applause ] folks, the world is watching. The world is watching. Looking at us and saying what in gods name is going on in america . As i said, he embraced our enemies, walked away from our closest allies. We have to change that. The whole world knows, so they know once again the United States can be trusted. Thats a critical ingredient for our security and the economic as well as political security. Folks, future generations are watching. In the years to come, theyre going to look back and theyre going to look back at this moment and theyre going to say, when it mattered most, what did they do . What did they do . Voted for joe. Did they save our democracy or were they part of the problem . They voted for joe. Now at this moment, when theres so much fear in this country, so much fear in this country, when we have a circumstance where, in fact, American Leadership is called into question, we need, honest, trusted, truthful, reassuring leadership. Thats what if im given the honor of being president i promise i will provide. [ applause ] folks, its time for america to get back up. Once again, fight for the proposition that we hold these truths self evident. That fight for the notion that america has to leead the world and lead americans to this new place, this new generation. Look, i view myself as a bridge, not as anything else. Theres an entire generation of leaders you saw stand behind me. They are the future of this country. They are the people who are [ applause ] look, when i announced my candidacy in philadelphia and i said that i wanted to do it in philadelphia where the declaration and where the constitution were first unveiled, unfurled, i said i wanted to do it because although we have never lived up to those aspirations, we have never before walked away from them. We have never before walked away from them. Folks, i believe with every fiber of my being that we have the capacity, every single generation, save this president , every sing many presidele presi moved that inclusion wider and wider. We cant let it shut down. The days of Donald Trumps divisiveness are going to be over. When he is gone, when he is gone, we will come back and get back on the road of building that more perfect union. Were only a little over a week from st. Patricks day. So its only appropriate that i quote an irish poet i admire who passed away. Wrote a poem. Theres a stance that goes like this. He says, history teaches us not to hope on this side of the grave but then once in a lifetime, that long tidal wave of justice rises up and hope and history rhyme. We have a chance to make hope and history rhyme. [ applause ] we have to remember who we are. This is the United States of america. Folks, theres nothing we have ever failed to do when we set our mind to it. Everybody knows who donald trump is. We have to let them know who we are. We choose hope over fear. We, americans, choose unity over division. [ applause ] we democrats choose science over fiction. [ applause ] and we choose truth over lies. [ applause ] so get up, lets take this back now theres nothing we cant do god bless you all and may god protect our troops. We can do this. So get up take it back its time its time its time thank you [ applause ] it comes out to be a campaign in which we have one candidate who is standing up for the working class and the middle class, were going to win that election. For those who have been knocked down, counted out, left behind, this is your campaign. Mrsz mrs.
