All the way west to lansing and east lansing and Michigan State university and the state capital. Our biggest economic driver is both our gm plants, but also the State Government, because we have lansing, a lot of state workers. There is a big relationship between the federal government and our district. First of all, lets remember that in michigan, 43 of the state budget is federal dollars. So, that means every single day we should be working together. Michigan State University takes in a ton of federal grant money for all the research, Scientific Research in particular, that we do here. We have our local communities, Fire Departments that have federal grants. We have block grants here, we have an incredible amount of folks competing for and winning federal dollars. So theres a big overlap. We have a lot of interaction between the State Government and the federal government, and its wonderful to have the State Government here in the district because it means you can work problems as a team. It means you dont have to work hard to find the right people in State Government who can tagteam with you on important issues. And it also means that i am the congresswoman for our governor, gretchen witmer, for our senator, senator debbie stabenow, and it just makes it really effective to work issues together. I think the most important thing that i carry with me from 15 years in National Security is a focus on the mission. I think thats probably the biggest one. When youre at the cia or youre doing a tour in iraq, none of the politics matters, the mission matters. What are you trying to get done . How do you work with your team to get that done . And a laser focus on that. I bring that same spirit to congress. On Homeland Security in particular, there is no way to get around the fact that we have a crisis at the border. The number of people coming over the border right now would swamp any administration of any political persuasion. So, we have a responsibility to deal with that in a humanitarian and decent way. So that is definitely a big issue that we work on. Election security. We need to protect ourselves, protect our election system. It is the heart of our democracy. So, that is a big issue we spend a lot of time on. And then, i think trying to understand the role of social media platforms. What are their responsibilities when it comes to spreading things like fake news or hate speech, antisemitic, racist, bad, negative messaging, terrorist messages, what are the responsibilities . Weve done a lot of hearings on the role of social media platforms, and i think we will be evolving on that. That is my sense.
