Between the sheriff and the others, im almost in trouble for following this. People talk about the polk county steak fry, to hell with that, its the story county democrats the next night that are that much greater. And the last time i was in nevada was probably a month and a half ago. The councilman gave me a tour around even a little bit before that. The first time i came was long before i got into this, it was sometime early april, may 2018. And had a great lunch with senatthe senator and they said if youre going to learn anything about iowa, you have to meet this woman named jan bower. I appreciate your warm welcome and your endorsement for sure. Look, about this time of year, you get people from around the country and they visit you and try to make some connection to iowa. Not going to tell you that my great, great grandparents settled in henry county in 1850, they did. Not going to tell you that my mom was born in ottumwa, yes, she was, because thats not why we gather. We gather for the stake of your country, for the sake of our country standing in this world for the sake of what were going to pass on that next generation. We gather to make sure that donald trump is a oneterm president. [ applause ] it is not the only reason, though, its more than just beating him. At this point it is rejecting this behavior that he is normalizing. The lies and the misstatements, the abuse of power, the divided us by race, gender, nationality, geography, the behavior where we expect more out of our preschoolers than we do the president of the United States. And its more than about just beating him. Its about offering something better. Its about soundly rejecting and getting back to things like decency, bringing people together, showing the government can work for the people, showing everybody wherever they are has a fair shot at a better life. When we as democrats win, when you win in story county, when we win everywhere, its about offering something better. Its about showing up. Its about listening. Its giving people a reason to vote for us not just against him. Thats how we win. Thats how we always have won every single time. Look, this is my background, a little bit, raised in montana, single parent household, paycheck to paycheck. Only knew there was a governors house in town because i delivered newspapers to it as a kid. I made it four blocks in life from where i was raised. But i worked my way through college and i borrowed my way d wife and i paid off what would be 175,000 in todays terms of my student debt. An impact of what i could do along the way for sure. When i was a boy, 90 of 30yearolds were doing better than that. Today its half. 60 of americans havent had a pay increase in real terms in 40 years. In twothirds of the counties this this country, they have actually lost businesses and folks saying i shouldnt have to leave my school or my church. Just to make a decent living. Grow accouing up and delivering newspapers to the governors house and now living it, i had the opportunity to live that American Dream. We have to recognize for far too many people in this country, that treatment has been denied. For women who are still making if it only was 85 cents on the dollar, its about 80 cents on the dollar. Or millennials struttiggling wi college debt. That dream has been deferred. For farmers, factory workers, high school fwraj wait, that American Dream has been destroyed. So this has to be about beating donald trump. But it also has to make sure the economy can start working for people again so they believe that things could be better. But first things first. I i am going to be a single issue voter this election. And that single issue is making sure that we can beat donald trump. I was the only democrat to are get reelected in a state that donald trump won. 25 to 30 of my voters voted for donald trump. This isnt about math. This is about collecting 270 electoral votes. We have to recognize the path to victory doesnt just go through the coasts. It doesnt just go through the urban areas. It goes through places we lost in 2016. Think about it. You have done real well in story county. A third voted obama, obama, trump. This election is about not only the white house, its about the state house. Because the deep, dark secret we never tell you, we come and love you to death. Until february. And then we leave. Youre still stuck right now with legislature that privatize your system. Its stripping away rights of teachers, of workers of women. We theed to make sure we have somebody at the top of the ticket that will help all throughout i believe im the best candidate to take our me message to all parts of the country. I refuse to seed basically the votes of rural americans as if people who wake up early, work the land, feed the world, pass the plate on a sunday, are forever somehow wedded to a blind conman from new york with orange hair and a gold toilet. These are voters that will come back to us. And i know we all can make big promises and should be skeptical. But heres the proms. Today is the 2 27bd. Write this down. If im the nominee, im fwoeng to win california. Massachusetts, vermont, a whole lot of those states. We have to ask those folks if we can win pennsylvania because thats how we win. Im a pro choice, pro union, populous democrat that won three elections in a red state. Not by compromise values, but by getting stuff done. At the core of that, were progressive is making progress in peoples lives. Making a difference. As a governor would stack up the way i would be able to do that when you provide health care, education funding, kicking dark money, protecting Civil Liberties in anybody in this field. I fear at times that washington has become a place where talking has become the substitute for doing. One of the reasons why were not competing is people want to believe the government can work for them and address the challenges of their here and now. My legislature is more republican than yours in iowa. We have been angled for that parody. We have made record investments in our k12 system. But it will do that for sure. I try find common ground, but that doesnt mean we have to compromise our values. More vetoes than any governor in the history of montana. Vetoed every attack on a womans right to make her own health care decisions, because that should be your decisions, not mine. 25 states have made it harderer to vote in the last two years. We have protected access to the ballot box. We protected access to the courthouse for injured workers. We kept our public lands in public hands and stopped every effort to roll back renewable efforts. Theres a former labor lawyer before i got into all of this, montana is still a state where you can organize and collectively bargain for better wages and better working conditions. How i won and governed are much the same. I will never forget when we tried to get Medicaid Expansion passed in 2015. This was the heart of the antiobamacare time. Shoto is 1700 people on the Rocky Mountain front. Everybody in town knew i was coming for a Community Meeting because the coke brokoch brothe kind enough to mail everyone these glossy pictures with barack obama and steve bullock. Obama and bullock are coming to your community to destroy your health care system. But i showed up any way. And instead of just telling them what they need, they actually listened. First guy that got up with the hospital administrator. Were a small town. 43 po 43 of the people who walk through the doors dont have health insurance. A couple folks got up afterwards. They might have called me a socialist or me and obama are going to destroy america. Probably the fifth speaker, he was what your county supervisors are. They was he was the chair of the county commission, a little bit older rancher. He was from another town of population 50, kind of a suburb of shoto. He got up and he goes, i was born in this hospital. This hospital saved my life two years ago when i had a heart attack. If we lose this fohospital, thi town is gone. Instead of me telling them what they needed, instead of listening, it gave them the courage to defy the Koch Brothers and vote. We need to begin from a base assumption that most peoples lives are too frantic to care about politics. They are worried am i going to lose my job. Is my kid going to get sick. But the values we hold are the same. You want a safe community. You want a roof over your head. You want a decent job and good public schools, not charter schools. You want clean air and clean water. You can do better r for the next generation than you even did before. Those are the values that we can win on along the way wp. As long as we can hit those to every part of this country. I think d. C. Could learn a little bit from montana. Im the only fwov north left this this race. Some say you got in too late. And why i didnt get in until then was i have a legislature that meets 90 days every two years. We tried to get it reauthorized by a ballot initiative. Tobacco companies spent 26 million kill iing that reauthorization. So i had a gob job to do. I could either chase 1 donors r or Save Health Care for 100,000 people. I chose to do my job. Signed my last bill on a monday. I announced on tuesday. And ill be danged if by thursday i wasnt here in iowa. And i think that the rules of spending 50 to get 1 donor object line. The intent was well. But its a sad state of affair if the National Party looks like its more important to be talking to donors or saving donors than at the end of the day saving peoples lives. Because thats not how you lead. Thats not how we win the elections. Thats also not how you make a difference in peoples lives. As us said, d. C. Could learn something from montana. Its not going to be easy. Until we address whats holding us back in so many way, thats t the corrupting influence of money. Think about it. Lindsey graham said we have to get this tax cut through to make our donors happy. Same time 44 of americans were now 400 in their pocket in case their car broke down or faced a medical emergency. We pay more for prescription drugs than any other country in the world. Yet costco can negotiate but its illegal for the federal government to do it. Generational workers have been replaced by independent contractors. Oil companies are making record profits. The Republican Party is the only Political Party in the world now that does acknowledge Climate Change is real. So unless were going to address corrupting influence of money in the system for all of these issues, its going to be that much harder to get anything done. I think we can do it. I have seen it done before. I was the attorney general with tom miller. Its great to have toms support in this as well at the same time that this little case called Citizens United came down. It equates comp rations with people. Democrats controlled both houses of congress and the presidency and we talked about it. We decried it. We gave speeches about it. We raised money off of it. But didnt do a dang thing. Montana has this dark history of around the turn of the century the wealthy controlled every local, state and federal election. To the point that folks knew beyond montana. Mark twain talked about one of them. William clark buys politicians like most of us buys food. Corruption no longer has offensive smell in montana. Finally, regular montanaens said enough is enough. And all be darned if elections didnt become about this. We also have some of the lowest contribution limits in the country, which is great for representative democracy. It sucks if youre running for president , but thats a whole other issue. People actually talking to people. So in Citizens United decision came down, i knew i had to do something. As attorney general i took the first case to the Supreme Court after that. This time we built a record. I had former statewide Republican Office holders saying, just all this spnding could corrupt what happens in our state house. Im so excited were going to change the world. It was thrown out. Taught me two things. One, dont ever doubt what one justice can do when it comes to our democracy, workers right, womens rights, environmental protections. Two, for something so important, you still got to find a way. So i wept back to my legislature, which was twothirds republican at this time, we passed a law that said 90 days out are from election day, i dont care if you call yourself americans for america, whatever it is, if youre going to spend in your elections, you have to disclose every dollar that you spend. Im running for reelection in 2016. Americans for prosperity, the group funded by the Koch Brothers. 93 days out they did such a good mailing in montana. It was so well targeted it showed up at the governors house. And my three kids are looking at it. They are like, are you really that much of a creep, dad . But on day 90 it stopped. All of that stopped. If we can kick the Koch Brothers out of montana, we ought to be able to do it in iowa and everywhere in this country. So we need legislative action, but we dont have to rely on just legislative action. I also did this executive order in montana that said i cant tell you corporations you cant spend in your elections. But if you want to contract with state of montana you have to disclose every dollar youre either contributing or spending impact on those elections. Think about if the federal government did that. They contract with near every company in this country and world. If lekked officials are going to be like nascar, correspondesponl kinds of different companies, at least we ought to know who is doing the sponsoring. This is the most important election in my lifetime. How many times have you heard people run for office say that . But it is. Because its not just about beating donald trump. Its about preserving at 243year experiment called representative democracy. Its about making sure, and i met your councilman spence, a month or so ago, taking a tour. Its about making sure that people can move back to communities and know that you have a viable opportunity to live that American Dream. Its about making sure that the American Dream still exists for people. We got big challenges in this country. Remember how united in the days after 9 11 people felt. We need that same purpose and that compassion and that unity to bridge some of these deep divisions. To actually make it understand we share more in common than what separates us. And address whats the big challenge to get Everything Else going. That really is to know that you do have a fair shot at the American Dream. In 16 weeks i have been here, this is my 12th trip i think. My 70th stop. I think i have learned something about iowans. I know a lot of people say, i understand iowa. Ill never say that. What i have learned is iowa nice. And iowa nice is you guys dont take this obligation of being the first in the country as something that youre just given. You take it seriously. You know that you have a role that is so important not just for our state, not just for the Democratic Party, but the entire country. And iowa nice is, well, youre somewhere on my list. Well, is your list 37 . Or is it four or five . I ask you with 134 days more before anybody actually exercises their preference. I ask you to take a close look. I am somebody that i ask you to join tom miller, join others because i think im someone that cannot only win this election, but beat bth donald trump and not only beat donald trump, but make it so you all can help take back your state houses and you can take back that last official in story county. Who we have at the top of the ballot matters quite a bit along the way. Youre the ones that you decide this. Not National Debate stages, nothing else. Youre the one thats entrusted with it. So take a look. I i appreciate you having me. I dont know if you want me to take anymore time. Or shut up because i would be willing to answer any questions. But youre the guy with the gun. I will answer almost any question. Just not yours. Just kidding. Sir . The question was how do you tackle trump . And we have to get some of those voters back. Us you cant make it all about trump. I think in part what you do is call out his behavior, but you make it about the voters. Heres a perfect example. Its so crazy because every week something more crazy comes out of this white house. But remember it was a handful of months ago when he said four horrible things about dually elected members of congress. And then he sat there for 12 seconds during that rally, listen to people screaming, send her back. For the next two and a half weeks, the national media, everybody talking about wasnt that horrible. Guess what, it was horrible. But at the same time, everyone was talking about that, he was in federal court trying to strip way preexisting coverage condition from everyone in this country. Completely take away obamacare. Betsy devos was out there trying to privatize Public Education with the freedom scholarships. It was about the same time they appointed somebody the bureau of Land Management that spent husband career trying to transfer federal lands. So how you beat him is how you treat anned a let sent. You call them out on his behavior. You say thats unacceptable for this country, but you dont focus on if every day. You focus on peoples everyday lives. Saying what he has done. If were going to be honest, wage growth, job growth has been slower under trump than obama. Whats gone up . Our deficit has gone up. Number of unb insured has gone up. Hate crimes have gone up. So lets point out what this man has done for the country in that respect. And what its done for people that are everyday struggling. He said that he drained the swamp. Its swampier today than ever before. You can do this over the next year and a half without making it about donald trump, but make it more about the voters. The people that i work with werent cheering. They were saying wrap it up. Ill close with one last short story. When i got elected in 2012 and moved into the governors residence, my kids who were at the time 6, 8 and 10. It was the youngest in 40 years in montana as far as the governors family. We move into the governors residence. My son kicks a soccer ball and it bounces off this painting. Somebody says that paint iing i worth 250,000. Im like take down all the paintings because we have to live here. But my first state of the state address. The first time i was going to speak to the members of my legislature. It was deeply divided at that time. Twothirds republican. I said yao going to hear different noises from the governors house. Thats the sound of young kids. And we as leaders, we have to recognize that our kids learn from our words and our deeds. What we say and what we do matter. I said our kids are watching. I think thats more true today than ever before. Wf to ask ourselves what are we giving the next generation to aspire to and be inspired by. This person might have to answer. Certainly not this this time in office, but all of us have to answer. I think we can be better than this. We can bridge some of those divides. We can show people the economy and democracy can work for them. And we can do it without trying to outtrump trump but elevate things. Im a person that can do that. I so appreciate the most important dinner. Its not that steak fry. So appreciate being invited to story county democrats night. Thanks so much. [ applause ] the last speaker we have for tonight is joe sestak. While hes coming e ining up to stage, can you hear me now . Hes going to be talking tonight. Come on up, admiral. The other day a good friend of mine stopped me and he said, paul, i had such a great experience the other day. I said, well, what was that . He said, you know, i had the opportunity to take my son down to the tavern and have a first drink with him. I said, really, how did that go. He said, well, i got him a beer and he didnt like it. So i drank it. So i got him an old style. He didnt like that either. So i drank it. Got him an irish red. He didnt like that. So i drank it. By the time we fwot to the irish whiskey, i could barely push that stroller back home. Admiral, glad to have you with us. Thank you very much. Appreciate the introduction. Im joe sestak. How many people have heard me speak before . Oh, that many. For me, thats great. I have been to story county twice. So ill just do a very short view over me for about five minutes. If you didnt mind, id like to take the last 15 for questions and answers. Is that acceptable . Thank you. I tell people that i wore the cloth of our country for 31 years in war and in peace. I was on the ground when afghanistan began. Heading to the antiterrorism unit. Took command of an aircraft carrier. The strikes against the taliban and al qaeda. The navy invests in you when you come ashore every two or three years. Send me off to a policy position such as working for president clinton in the white house. When i i came home from that war, i had to stand in the mull tear hospital with my wife as they rolled my daughter out 4 years old with brain cancer. They couldnt get it, they said. When asked, they said we think its glee owe blas toe ma. We were able to take what whe hd to to save her life. No, you saved her life. I had a Health Care Man in the military that i could do and take her anywhere. Up to massachusetts for therapy. Two machines in the nation at the time. We got to get to it. And shes here because of this country. So my payback tour was stop being an i object dependent. Become the second democrat since the civil war. And i ran. I ran on one campaign refrain. Im a retired navy admiral. Running on National Security begins at home. I took whats now in 2005 back then was now called romney care. It became the legacy that turned into obamacare. I put that up and said thats what im running on. And then over the next two years, with an f from the National Rifle association, 100 from National Organizations of women and 95 from human rights campaign, i got reelected. I raised 3 million to run again and i didnt spend a penny. Not one cent on a campaign ad. We also knew when we disagreed, we would disagree well. I got out of government after those four years, which i might come back to. I ran against my partys desires in a senate race. Ul say it now. Because some of you may remember him. A republican senator who tried to hue miluate anita hill. She brought Sexual Harassment claims against clarence thomas. I said he doesnt belong. So i ran against my very fine president and all the establishment with the generation. That wouldnt have occurred. But back then, i was 40 points down and people republican and democrats agree and i won. But it came at a cost. With little support in the general election, i did go on. But i was very fortunate. My daughters brain cancer came back last year. Shes probably the only one they know of who has beaten an 8 chance to win twice. It was june when we finally decided she was in a safe harbor. During that time i sat with her, at that same therapy machine in massachusetts, the same surgeon came out of retirement to do her brain surgery. I had to payback my country a second time. Im not kid iding. I owe it. This time it was for a different reason. The reason is that i honestly believe we have to beat mr. Trump. I got that. Who doesnt . But my god, if we do not unite this country, if we do not have someone who actually can remind americans of who we are and what we stand for, theres no way that we will meet the defining challenges of our time without a united america. Im running to beat mr. Trump to unite this country. Then to convene the world with a common good of us all. Think of Climate Change. If we pass the Green New Deal in ten years, lets say we do. It wont matter. Because 85 of the damage of greenhouse emissions comes from abroad. S the tropics has 8 airconditioning today. In 2050 it will have 50 . That will be equivalent to deforesting twothirds of the amazon. Unless we actually take the amendment, which we havent even ratified, which says, hey, c carbon, 6,000 times worse for each molecule that gets released. All nations must enforce it immediately. Because it doesnt even have to begin to be followed until 2038 by developing countries. Vaccines a fourth of them go away. Saudi arabia will use as much energy as imports oil today. But more than that as i end to take your questions, we actually have to have someone not like the democrats and republicans who voted for that misadventure in iraq, who never understood the military can stop but they can never fix a problem. And then created isis. As it me its atized, it took us through the middle east and beyond. Our invasion created that condition. If you have somebody in that white house who doesnt understand that you better know how words going to end. Before you start to think its wise to begin, take iran today. We had fixed iran. With a power of convene iing th world, even with strange bed physical lows. Russia and china with our diplomacy and economic sanctions and rid out of iran. In two months they would have had two nuclear devices. And now america broke its word. I know he here at home politicians do that. But abroad, why do you think iran when we put more sanctions on it after breaking our word and they kept theirs, they are doing the rest now today. Imagine a strike. Can anybody here tell you how its going to end. Particularly when they cant even survive in the the gulf. Trump doesnt know that. They havent operated there before. I have. We cant find that. They get the heck out of dodge before they mined us into the persian gulf. I will end because what i will tell one story since half of you heard one of them ill tell the other. When i arrive off afghanistan that first time after coming out, i launched eight pilots. Seven of them were pros from dover. They had been in combat before. I wanted that first strike to go down well. We call someone who has never been over into a foreign country in combat before. When i joined up there in vietnam, we didnt have women on ships, never mind flooiing the most fighter f18. She proved to be the one that night. Not to dive low without permission. Because we knew missiles were there. They were fighting the soviet union in afghanistan, they relabeled themselves and now called the taliban. But special forces got ambushed. Were too close. Somebody. That young woman, brand new pie l lot felt she didnt have time to ask. She dove three times. Those four men as i told sean hannity one time. He asked what do you think about women in combat, i us said those four men picked up and they didnt care who saved their butt that night. Two lessons. One because she was given a fair opportunity. Too many marginalized communities not be given. I just met with 20 of them. Are not given a fair opportunity. Because she was a common mission, a common good, a common effort of the United States of america succeeded that night. And then the most important lesson b, she was willing to be accountab accountable. To people. To the troops. Above party, that is my word. Above self, risking her career if not her life. Because she knew that it wasnt her word, it was her deed that mattered to the people town below. America is is yearning for someone who will be accountable to them, that they will know they can trust. Even when they disagree well, because no matter the consequences you will always be accountable to people above self and above party and above anybody special interests, no matter the cost. How else can we ever get health care . Ever get training for a lifetime . My favorite program. Through a congress. Where we dont have another president who can only do executive orders. We cant keep going sideways. We must unite this country. Thank you. He should have brought in the Afghan Government immediately as well as pakistan pakistan. They do mischief by fueling the taliban. Then he should have brought in india that doesnt like pakistan. Ask they helped the government. Then bring in china. And then he should bring in iran. They dont like al qaeda. Because we have to get to a peace agreement. But if all those outside players playing mischief arent part of owning the suitcase of peace, thats going to pop own when we only have the taliban and the government there. Buzz for one example, they are going to cause mischief because they want their team to win after they are gone. Convene the world. Thats the greatest power of america. Not our military. Not our economy. Its the power to convene. So what we need to do, we convene strange bedfellows to kick out that stuff. We convene them all. And then we make sure theres a comfortable peace aaccord that can be enforced. The human rights and the civil rights of women. Us say that because when i was in afghanistan, i came out and i said, man, we fixed the rate of women in afghanistan which was 98 when i was there. We do more to fix the glorl global war on terror than the military will do and now has been able to do to stop it after 19 courageous years. Military stop problems, we dont fix it. I also said that because after i left congress, i didnt take a lobbying job. I offered a sevenfigure job because i was an admiral congressman and said, when i turned it down, are you sure . I think she was joking. But i went and convened the world. Everyone on trumps travel ban list, i brought in a team. And a constitutional people in the white house, i had had them lead the parade of the First International competition. When they had a a picture taken with a boy, they went back. After all this time, we cannot leave that society. We have to cut police in half because half of them are corrupt. Tough business. Question . I am interested in what it sounds like youre training for life program. Im a county supervisor. I spent eight hours last week not counting drive time in training to fix our administration, the States Administration of a federal workforce program. So id like to hear it. Heres what i believe. First of all, Student Loans. Can we fix Student Loans . Yes, 2 of youth since 2005, only 2 have a debt greater than 50,000. 75 of them have 10,000 or less. Before we forgive it all, what we have to say is theres a program in government that says we should make it universal and mandatory and grandfather it for everybody. You dont have to pay back more than 10 of your loan. 10 of your income towards your loan each year. We show should lower that to 5 . So if you dont earn anything, you dont pay anything back until you get another job. We can fix that problem. Training for a lifetime. As i went around. I have seen it all. Its beautiful. Particularly corn fields. I have never seen such straight corn fields. Its just like the sheriff said up there. He was talking about a sailor in pennsylvania. I met a precision agron mist. Im the one that make fields straight. Because were soon going to have wirele lesless tractors. I said what happens with the drivers . They lose their job. As i walk 422 miles across pennsylvania, all the way to the ohio border, when i ran for senate because i wanted people to know its about you, not me. I have to know you. I met a coal miner who lost his job as we go to natural gas. Now green energy. What happened to him . We dont have here training for the artisans. Those who use their hands and their brain. As Technology Changes so rapidly, we spend less than any developed nation on training for the artisans. 65 of americans who dont have a college degree. Who really run this country. We should be training and retraining. What do we do . We put a lot of investment in you already. He should be retrained for green energy manufacturing. But you know what . In the military we send them off to community college. Retrain and they are out working. I proposed this. Its what we have to do. There are people. Those are the trump supporters. Those are the clinton supporters. The Democratic Party should be focused on them. Everybody says we have local employment. No. Back in the clinton years, what didnt you like . It was 67 . That means 12 million americans are out of the workforce, not even looking for jobs because they dont have the skills to get them. First thing i would do, theres something in government called the National Strategy program. Where when we have refugees in america fema with red cross and the the other nonprofits immediately respond we should have them, not i. C. E. Taking care of families and children. Because thats how they are trained to do. Then we need to take care of them until we get into housing with families that are here. Lets do as i said we did. How did we do in world war ii . Military stopped. They fixed it. Any woman ill tell you who is willing to walk 800 miles carrying her baby. Thats determination. We can fix the problem. Third, i run in parades here. Shook 30,000 hands because i learned a lot about iowa. They love their parades. As i us called one woman and said, how many will be along the route, she said, well, more than usual. We havent had a parade r for the last four weeks. True story. Everyone out of four stood up and stand up and shake your hand and say thank you for your service. But one of them said i like to walk. Since 1970 the birth rate in america has not been sufficient to replace those who pass away every year. I said, man, the baby boomer generation is retiring. I know, im trying to keep a job. But i said if it wasnt for the undocumented, we would be a population spiral. Just like japan with no immigration. It stagnated the economy two and a half years. We need them. So we need to do what john mccain, ted kennedy, president bush all proposed as a bipartisan plan. We all know what that one is. They come out of the shadows and get back in line. But they get there. I said okay. Its pretty tough. When you take out those that are government, youre down about 7 . Heres why im for unions. Im for unions because the charter says we stand for working families. Its the lalgs organized force for here in america. We have to do it. I forgot the county. I met a marine core vet. He started working there in 1990.
