About 22 accredited cleolleges together which is the second highest number of any Congressional District in the country. I was lekk elected to congress 1993. The shape of the district has changed. I have represented lynchburg for that entire 25 years. My hometown of roanake, its grown further and further north. Lynchburg is a community that has a very rich history going back to the early 1700s. Settled by an individual named john lynch. It settled here because were at the falls of the james river. Its an important port for carrying various Agricultural Products down the james river to richmond and to the chesapeake bay. It also was Major Community during the civil war because it was a Major Hospital and the lyn lynchburg City Cemetery has a huge cemetery where union and confederate soldiers are buried because they died after their wounds and cared for here and didnt survive. It also is the largest Manufacturing Community on a per capita basis. This district is fortunate that it has a very diverse economy and while it is not a boom area in terms of Economic Growth, its been long known for having strong steady Economic Growth and when there are severe economic downturns, the downturns are less. You have low unemployment rates in this area. I think that coupled with the diverse economy makes it really a very stable place for people to live, raise their families and people who come here like it here. Im looking forward to having an opportunity to do Something Else with my life after the end of this congress. I dont know yet what that will be. It will entail spending more time with my wife who i, for the last 25 years, on monday through thursday nights when ive been in washington when the congress has been in session, wind up talking to her on the phone. I expect that will change and i also have two grand daughters. I look forward to spending as much time with them as i possibly can. I will also do Something Else. I just havent figured out yet. With the end of my chairmanship, at the end of this year, it seemed like the right jumping off time to start a next chapter in our family.
