Gothic and was always very critical. But nonetheless its one of a kind. In this exact building we had the secession from louisiana from the union. One of the the famous governors was attempted to be impeached here. Union troops occupied it during the civil war. It was actually the interior was really destroyed from from an invertant fire that the union troops were cooking inside and caught the building inside and sbroid the interior. I wanted to point out to you the famds what we call the umbrella. Umbrella because of the beautiful color scheme of the glass that we have done after the building was burned in the civil war. It laid dormant about 20 years. When it was rebuilt many of the elder legislators remembered how dark it was in the Old State Capitol and insisted that the Architect Build in magnificent glass dome, supported by this post down the middle. Thats why we give it the famous name of the umbrella. If its a sunny day or cloudy day you can see the change in the glass. Its a magnificent focal point right in the center of the building goes right atop the spiral staircase well see in a moment. Additionally i wanted to point out this is also what we call the somewhat the hall of the governors where we depicket all the louisiana governors along the wall. We have governor he had inedwards who had served four terms on this wall. Below him is the governor who was the father of the superdome in new orleans. It was his idea with many members in new orleans that actually made possible the now superdome in new orleans, louisiana. Our current governor, bobby jindel. He was the first indian governor in the state. And just got elected to a second term. And will be taking office in january. Served also our congressman for sometime. In large portrait here is that of huey long our u. S. Governor and senator. This is as i indicated he also was attempted to be impeached here. It failed. And ill show you the room ill bring you into the house chambers in a momi. Thats where louisiana seceded from the union. And the vote to bring his impeachment hearing to the senate took place. Although other historic issues took place. Governor blanco served during the katarina era. I served under the governor for four years myself when i was in the senate. Ill bring you now into the house chambers attention, a beautiful room. As you can see we bring forth the stained glass on both as youll see in both the house and senate side. This is the room that louisiana would have seceded from the union during the civil war. It would have been where they had many of the raging debates with about Louisiana Lottery at the time, gambling, in that era. You can see on both sides are the fireplaces. At that time this is how we heated the building. What were some of the discussions during the talk about secession. One of the interesting things is that 80 of the delegates here to secede from the union were actual slave owners. The outcome of the vote was predetermined. The mean or average income of the individual attention at that time exceeded 100,000. You can imagine what it was worth in those days by todays standards. We have a gallery up come that visitors could come and witness the the proceedings. And again this is where hughey long where we would have had the impeach. Proproceedings only to fail. Talk about the man behind the effort to impeach governor long. Actually he was actually a relative of the family who donated the property for this building. And hughy long after that attempt was to incensed about what occurred to this in this building he had a poor taste in this about tp that was the everyone tis for him toable build the new State Capitol built in the 1930s. And its still the building utilized today by the state legislature and the building in which i served. We will now enter the senate chambers. As you can see its directly across from the house with the same stained glass windows on each side, facing one another. This room used to have fireplaces also. But have been since removed. And of course through the the fire you know the building has been brought back to its original status as best as could be. The one thing i do want to point out is this stain glass window here at the upper end i dont know if your camera can catch that. But we left the exposed wood that shows how it was charred during the fire. We decided to leave that upper end just for presentation to show the what occurred to the building what it mafr looked like in that period of time. Were back on the first floor of the Old State Capitol in baton rouge. Were getting ready to go into what used to be the Governors Office as depicted in the marble plate here on the floor. This would have been administrative type offices as you entered, secretaries and various other individuals. And then you would enter his office here. We have a desk that is depicted in this picture on the wall here that is actual hughy longs desk. Where at the time then governor long would have operated from. Of course as many places in Historic Building if only the rooms could speak. And my excolleague from the senate now Lieutenant Governor darden who was secretary of state at the time and i was his first assist had many a meeting here. It was a great meeting venue to bring individuals in and testimony they will the story base hughy and let them realize they were sitting in his old office. Does the history of hughy overshadow the significance of other governors. I think it does. Its amazing the entire career of governor long only spanned about 7 or 8 years. His u. S. Senate position and then his position here as governor. And yet it it overlays all of louisianas history. I would think the only governor close to that as far as being wellkno wellknown be edwin edwards. But governor long is depicted at the new State Capitol, the monument you see out there is where he is buried. He is a sign of folklore in louisiana politics, flo doubt about it. I think it continues on to this day. What is it about louisiana that attracts interesting political figures . Well, i think its as best put, we talk about louisiana gumbo. Its a collection of many, many nationalities from french from o to span yards to creoles. Its an eclectic group. Its a gumbo of individualing that becomes an interesting side bar to louisiana and its poli
