Each week, American History tvs american artifacts takes you to museums and historic places. Of next, we traveled to philadelphia to hear about the museum of the American Revolution located two blocks from independence hall. Its scheduled to open in early 2017. Incredible experience to any visitor who walks into this museum. Yes, they will see some amazing artifacts. Original witnesses to the American Revolution. The men, the women who achieved it. At the same time, theyre going to be experiencing the era in utterly surprising and novel ways. They will be immersed in environments that will bring the story to life. You will meet people and get to understand the importance of the revolution. Where the drive came from to sustain this country through eight years of warfare. Why the ideals of liberty equality, of selfgovernance were so important. Where these values came from that still divide americans today. The collection has been put together over the last century. It started with the acquisition of the tent that housed washington during the revolution. Michele and i have very carefully revealed part of the wall of general washingtons tent. What youre seeing, and ill show you, this is an image showing the way the tent will be displayed in the museum. The tent will be in its own climate controlled case, not unlike the starspangled banner. The tent is composed of the roof, than a sidewall that hangs from the roof, not unlike a tent that you would rent for a party. In a lot of ways, its a very contemporary style of tent. What you are seeing laid out is the wall of thats tent. This is what was known as stone cloth. This is the bottom of the wall that hangs down. That would fold inside of the tent to keep rain and dirty and critters from coming into the tent very easily. There would have been a line of iron hooks along the top of that wall. As you can see its raked a bit. It has a rise here, because the end of the tent where the doors are located rises up a bit. One of the interesting things we found on our initial assessment and a study of the tent is that when it was originally constructed, the doors were about six inches lower. In the process, they had been cut. When you think about washington being 62 he is a pretty tall man for the period. You can imagine his hat maybe got knocked off too many times. [laughter] so he sent it back for repairs. Theres tremendous information about income from examining these objects centuries after they were produced. It still revealing a lot of secrets as we continue our work. Coming up next, hosting an open mind, david sehat talks about the Founding Fathers and their different ideologies. He discusses how president s have interpreted ideas and views them to further their own agendas. This is one hourlong.
