We now need congress to provide Additional Resources that will advance ourur National Security and support allies, our allies and partners in their fight against tyrants and terrorists. S. Personnel in iraq and syria. We are deeply concerned about the potential for any significant escalation of these attacks in the days ahead. At the direction of President Biden secretary of defense andre assorted military to take steps to prepare for this to ensure we are postured appropriately both in terms oftu being able to defd our horses and respond decisively as needed secretary of defenseec has directed to Carrier Strike up to the region we are sending more air defense u. S. Airbases in the region. We know these groups are supported by the ir gc regime. We know iran continues to support hamas and hezbollah. Can you tell us whether other countries are making the same request is there a coordinated effort . A lot speak for other nations about communications might be having with israel. They got legitimatee security concerns and again we need to work through that. Admiral, can you tell us the latest on the status of hostages in the work to try to release additional hostages . Do you see a category of those beingg held who might be the net available to be released if that were to take place . Can you give us a sense of what the picture looks like . I wish i could kill you really do these are all great questions. Im fortunate where we are in the process makes it impossible for us to pebbly detail the efforts going on. We are grateful for all the help we got. We cannot help getting this to americans out mother and daughter we are glad they are okay and going to be reunited with their families when they come back home. The bunch of others that are not. A small group we still think are americans. There are dozens and dozens from other countries and israel as well there is a lot of effort going on a lot of conversations and discussions with partners in ns the region i think is just best if you dont detail that. The number of americans is gone from handfuls to 10 commenting more on that . I want to be careful the numbers as you rightly said it fluctuates will estimate talk to certainly now are glad to know the numbers less its standby to obviously. We still have about 10 to account for americans. Its not exactly clear to us where those 10 people are. I would still categorize it is about a handful. I know thats not what you want is not as detailed as i should gett today too. For. One last issue. Theres a young man he went to serve in the idf that was killed in action. Can you speak to that situation has the president reached the family or has the intention to do that . Ir certainly offer our deepest condolences to the family. Note mom and dad ever want to get i do not have any communication to speak to one way or the other. Again our thoughts and prayers go to the family. Really, that is going to be a conversation israeli officials need to start having amongst themselves. I think without speaking for them not going too far to say the focus right now is ongoing after hamas where they are getting humanitarian assistance in getting people out for our focuses the issue of governance in gaza is not unimportant. But i would not speak for the israelis in terms of how deeply their diving down into what that will look like. We have talked to the israelis again with their aims and strategies that include some longterm issues that are out ahead of them. But i think you can understand it properly right now the focus is on the operational picture but. The normalization process can you say saudi arabia has provided a list of what he would like to see between saudi arabia and israel . Im not tracking i am not aware of a new list or homework assignment they have submitted. We still believe those talks are simportant. We want to pursue normalization. We understand in israel there is a different focus right now part we get that. We still believe theres great value in pursuing normalization we have every intention of keeping that knowing clicks thank you. What kind of humanitarian aid with the u. S. Like to see reaching the palestinians before israel watches its around . I am not going to sit here and assume theres going be some sort of a Ground Invasion. I am certainly not going to speak a hypothetical timing if theres going to be. Et lets just talk but humanitarian assistance at large. And you heard we are getting food, water, medicine into gaza. Not enough. There is been i think three convoys a little less than 60 trucks that is a good start but it is just a start from want to see keep going and overcoming the days you see convoys of trucks getting in. Fuel is also an issue. We know that you need fuel to run the Power Generators in hospitals. You need fuels to run the pumps so people can drink fresh healthy water. Fuel is another thing we are working on. Whether or not there is a Ground Invasion do humanitarian aid is important . Pub whether or not theres a Ground Invasion we believe humanitarian assistance falling to the people of guss critically important it needs to go as soon as possible and is much as possible. Where the president stand on this . There was confusion over the weekend whether or not he had said yes he does want israel to wait until humanitarian assistance can get to the palestinians. We have been Crystal Clear with our partners in the region including israel want to see humanitarian system flow theres no change preposterous not at all. As i said into steves question we are not dictating military terms to the Israeli Defense force they have a right and responsibility to go after these terrorists were certainly going to give they believe we are definitely going to support them in terms of providing the capabilities for them to continue the process it has continued to flow over the course of the weekend. We are not dictating terms. Will we see you may fighting for humanitarian question request want to make sure is israels tools and defend itself and that humanitarian assistancend keeps coming. Was urging israel to delay the groundro invasion. The day after they appeared statements other outlets denying that was the case in other outlets of report the same information i had but today you are not confirming any of this report. My question is are you at all concerned if the u. S. Is not clear it with the public about what we are asking or suggesting to israel that they do here thats going to complicate getting this aid package to congress and the 105 billion a portion goes towards israel. Are you concerned not being clear with folks about what the u. S. Is advising israel to do will hamper Important Congress aid . Whats been very consistent about our support for israel. In their ability to defend themselves. Weve been very clear andck consistent about the facts are going to keep supporting Security Assistance they can do it in clear and consistent about the need humanitarian assistance to flow and consistent about our desire to get people outge of ga as well as to get her hostages home. Weve been very clear and consistent throughout that includes of members of congress. Yes, we are going to need congressional support. Got enough appropriations available for a while longer. How longio is that while is goig to depend on the expenditure o rate in the kind of operations there conducting. We desperately need congress to act on the supplemental. Asking about the israelis about their strategies are you liking theng answers are giving you . Im not going to talk but the details of the conversations we are having. Again these are clear and consistent conversations. Again making sure they have what theyey need him that they are thinking through we are asking them with their answers are to the kind of questions in the militaryo ought to be asking. On the eta portion how are you going to convince people this is not going to get into hamas hands. For instance Something Like covid relief money in the u. S. We are now talking about understanding with hamas how this humanitarian aid should be used. And how thats going to be a worthwhile necessary and secure endeavor per. We share concerns about any diversions of humanitarian assistance for hamas purposes. Fuel is an example we know they need fuel to be able to electrify their tunnels and keep the lights on. We understand it. We are not blind to potential concerns which is why ambassador satterfield and we want to make sure that has humanitarian assistance get to the Palestinian People weve seen no indication as of today any of the trucks have been diverted to hamass are absconded by hamas on n the Palestinian People who are in desperate need for. I would remind folks we have trusted partners on the ground he many hearing aid are on the ground they very much are taking a personal stake in a a professl personal stake in making sure the aid is getting words needed. We are going to watch it closely we do not want to see hamas benefit any more than anybody else. Following on that, how does the u. S. Go about knowing aid is getting and not hamas is taking bit off the top . And second, could you confirm president sent k lieutenant an some other folks to advise israelis . Whats the first question im in a break it down and probably going to forget. On the first question we are working with trusted partners on the ground including the un. That is the way we do it in so many countries around the world we dont have a footprint theres no regions there was we dont have a footprint weret nt on thehe ground to personally inspect these things that we have trusted partners on the ground including the un and other organizations who will report what they are seeing we will stay in close touch with them. Ir we all share the same desire that hamas not divert their own purposes. Its not just the whole international communitys has a stake in making sure the people of gaza get this food, water, medicine and other vital needs met. On your second question, what i can tell you is that there are a few relevant military officers with experience. The kind of experience we believe is appropriate as a source of operations that israel is conducting and may conduct in the future to go over there, to share perspectives in their own experience and to ask the hard questions the same hard questions and asking our israeli counterparts its very beginning. Question how many . A few, a few. Thank you admiral. Israel has repeatedly said they destroy hamas what are some mayorkas top priority . And are the twoas countries in e same page here . Americas top or anything President Biden made that clear were over there to make sure israel has the tools and the capacity and the capability to go after Hamas Terrorists to make sure humanitarian assistant doesnt make sure we a get innocent civilians out including american citizens. Could you outline how this would complicate getting the remaining hostages out with america strategy . This is not wise for me too get up heree and do a bunch of speculating and hypothesizing about operations and what happened jet. We will let the israelis speak for themselves and for what operations they want to conduct. Another question on iran some officials have expressed particularly with iran in irans foreignov minister mourns quote anythings possible at any moment and could get out of control have you seen any indication iran ison preparing o further expand their conflict more thin than what weve already seen . We know they are supporting hamas and hezbollah their in hee monitoring this closely in some cases urging on these groups. I made it clear President Biden did not want to see this conflict widen. To deter any such action they need to act appropriately to protect and defend the security interest of the region. Jon, speaking of the americans in gaza were being told by the state department, by the administration to go to the border. We were told on saturday they were told to go to the border board butthey cannot leave. Are you still advising americans to go to the border and whats the hold up there . What you t have to talk to the state department. I cannot speak for the communication they are having with american citizens there. What i can tell you is we are working very, very hard to get gaza and ambassador satterfield literally work in this is you and i are speaking right now. And so obviously we want to get them out we want to have them available as close by as possible so that can be effective in a very efficient way. But as for what specific messages the state department sending today, you have to talk to them. Thinking about what President Biden said on friday at the fundraiser he talked about the hamas attack to be carried out to disrupt the efforts between israel and saudi arabia. Can you talk more about what he meant by that exactly . Whats the administrations position . That could have been a goal here. Look, hamas wants to wipe israel off the map. They simply want to kill as many israelis as they can. That was the purpose of october 7 to just take life. It is perfectly possible that there were other geopolitical goals here is the president alluded to. Normalization between israel and saudi arabia, you can see that would not be in the interest it would not be in the interest of tehran. You think thats a top reason . What i can tell you is we have significant National Security interest in the region we are going to work to protect and defend those interest with additional military capability in the actor who is beginning to think about entering in an widening or deepening this conflict ought to take a look at how seriously we are taken responsibility. We have existing appropriations and Funds Available to continue support to israel for a time. For a short time. Again i cannot be perfect specific a lot it depends on the pace of your operation with her going there. We also need to make sure we have appropriations to replenish the of the stocks of National Security interest around the world as well we provide an awful lot out of our inventory. We need to be able to replenish that. Its vitally important. And just to put a fine point on this, the figure we asked for a little more than 14 billion was directly after consultations with our israeli counterparts we do not pull that number out of thin air absolutely was a result of the conversations we had with the israelis about the kinds of needs they have four songs i think they might need it. Just let them go now because these people did not do anything wrong. Their innocent civilians been caught up in conflict let them go now. I recognize thats not going to happen. The Chinese Foreign minister is at washington this weekend. The objective of this meeting. Is been some discussion of some potential meetings may be as soon as possible this week. I think the state department love more to say about that later today. Also on the incident with china what message is the white house sending to china about the incident yesterday . Collision incident with china . What message are we sending to china . What do you say to china . I am not aware broadly speaking about the intimidating and frankly in some cases reckless behavior by the Maritime Forces as well as her socalled coast guard bullying the navy, coast guard Fishing Vessels of neighboring states have been won very clear thats unacceptable and anisa stopped. We also understand the focus in the region is what its going to be onnu it. Its our focus too. Does it will just gonna walk away from us of a two state solution. We are going to continue to work for that. The key issue is normalization between israel study nowhere and shoot normalization. Period that has been put down i just told you so theres no change in our desire to cheat ca two state solution for this absolutely no change in our efforts to try to get normalization between israel and saudi arabia. Were not blind to reality their fighting to defend themselves and we are trying to help them do i that. Right now the focus of the reason is what is goingsl on.
