You are watching about books on booktv and we are giving you a preview of some of the books that are coming out this fall. Joining us now is collette bancroft, New York Times book editor since 2007. Joining us on booktv is colette bankroft, book editor for the Tampa Bay Times. We just listed a whole bunch of political books that are coming out this fall, many dealing with the 24 election and donald trump etc. Do you look at political books down in florida . Yes. We are awash in politics here in florida and i do, i have one book definitely on my list that im looking forward to and that is martin barons book collision of power, trump, basals, and the Washington Post, he retired as executive editor of the Washington Post, took on the job not long before jeff bezos bought the paper and then of course shortly thereafter trump became president and im looking forward to an inside look at that political era which continues into the present day, from someone whos that kind of an insider and a legendary journalist as well and im very happy that my newspapers book event in november, to talk about the book, that is of the political books im looking at, the one im most excited to start. Host the Tampa Bay Times, do you sponsor a book festival or just holding individual events . We sponsor a book festival. Its in its 31st year. The Tampa Bay Times festival of reading, this year we have nine authors, we have michael connelly, dave barry, lauren groff, a number of other terrific authors, and im looking forward to it. I do a lot of on stage interviews with those authors and a ton of work, and a highlight of my years. That something booktv should look at, coming down to. One of the authors thats going to be on the book festival circuit i think is Walter Isaacson with his new biography of elon musk. Of you had a chance to review that . Guest i have not yet. I am both really interested in it and i am not sure how much i will enjoy it, not sure if i will love it or be scared by it. Is a very controversial figure but a very powerful figure. Isaacson is an old pro at handling that kind of person and looking at their live and impacts so im looking forward to reading it. It is a fascinating subject, musk is a fascinating character for good or ill. Host how long have you been doing this and when did you get into the book . Guest ive been the book editor at times for 16 years and before that, i was book editor at morning newspaper in tucson, the daily star for a few years and i had many other newspaper jobs in between, but before i was a journalist, i was an english major and an english teacher in universities and im the kid whose mother said put that book down and go outside and play. I always loved books. It eventually led me into this path of journalism of being a book editor. Ive been very lucky to have this job. We are a vanishing breed. Host we should apply the Tampa Bay Times for maintaining the book section in its newspaper. Two books coming out this fall but i want to ask about, ruth simmons, and prairie view university, both come out with memoirs, is that something you been looking at. Having an insiders of you, they have extraordinary lives. Im looking forward to reading both of those. Not only am i interested in women in education but education is a subject. Compelling at the moment. In some ways. Host what is on your list to review this fall . Guest i am interested in eve how the female body, 200 million years of evolution, she said that the book was sparked when she talked to a friend about Scientific Research and learned in all kinds of Scientific Research, whether it is with human or Animal Research subjects, the norm is male. How does this affect men, male lab rats or whatever, what we have discovered recently is that thats not a great way to approach Scientific Research because female bodies are different in so many ways. As you look at Human Evolution, theres evidence that women used tools before men did. Of course producing milk is what defines mammals, and had a huge impact on Human Evolution and all sorts of things. So interested at looking at evolution from that physical point of view and womens role in it. Thats one that im excited about and looking forward to reading. Im interested in the new biography of larry mcmurtry. One of my longtime favorite novelists, molten dove, some people put it on that Great American novel, certainly a Great American novel, whether it is the Great American novel or not. Outside of writing novels he had an extremely interesting life as a screenwriter, as an antibook dealer, all kinds of things so im looking forward to that biography. Im looking forward to a new book by benjamin knows her who won a Pulitzer Prize for his biography of susan sontag, has a new book called the upside down world, meeting with the dutch masters. He lives in the netherlands, moved there when he was quite young in his early 20s, he is an american from texas, moved into a culture and language he knew little about and found himself increasingly engaged with the huge collections going back to them and back to them, so this book is both memoir how that helped him find himself but also a group biography of those painters, rembrandt and people like that and the new perspective and i love art, i paint myself, i particularly love some of those painters so i am really looking forward to this because mozer is an excellent biographer. Thats another one on my list. Host have you ever been disappointed in a book you had been looking forward to and had to review it at the same time . Of course. That happened. I wont name names. I am sometimes, that usually happens, and author have read before and whose work i liked before and has reputation or standing and sometimes people produce, not every book is a great one especially for people with long careers. I had that happen and i had to write negative reviews. I tend not to write negative reviews about debut books or books of authors that are not already familiar to people but if somebody is well known and the book has a lot of buzz, if its a let a letdown i feel an obligation to write a negative review. I do have to do that. Host what are some of the reviews and whats in a review that seems to connect with your readers . Guest it varies so much from reader to reader, everybodys approach is different and theres no such thing as a book that everybody loves. I find it hard to recommend books individually to people. I recommend them to people at large. People like, i think they like a sense of voice. If you are either praising or criticizing a book, people like to know why and i do my best when i review books to give the reader a sense of what kind of book of this is so that they can decide whether they want to read it or not, whether i like it or not is secondary. It is more important to give the reader a clear idea that this is this kind of book, serious scientific or whole area to read and to kind of judge books on their own terms, to tell readers this is a book thats trying to do this xyz, and does it well or doesnt, but description to me is as important or more important than prescription in book review. Host we have time for one more book you are looking forward to reviewing. Guest i am looking forward to Tracy K Smiths book to free the captives, a former poet laureate, this book is pros and are combination of memoir, her own Family History and the history of racism in america and so brilliant as a writer, and this combination of memoirs, criticism, and history sounds intriguing to me and im looking forward to that. Host what do you read for pleasure . Guest i love crime fiction. I like nonfiction. I read a lot of nonfiction as well. Host we appreciate spending a few nutes with colette bankroft. Guest my pleasure, thanks. Host in the past 25 years booktv has been on the air 1300 weekends, covered 900 book festivals and featured 22,000 authors including this event. I just had an appearance on charlie rose. He was asking me how does the book connect with your politics . It is very clear to me that theres a direct line between the subject matter contained in dreams from my father and the types of politics i aspire to. Because essentially what the story is about is a boy born to a father from kenya and mother from kansas in hawaii with an unusual name who traveled to indonesia, came back, found himself in chicago working in the lowest income neighborhoods in the country and then traveled back to africa and somehow was able to weave together a workable meaning for his life, and africanamerican, american, as somebody who is part of the broader human family. That was not an easy task. It wasnt an easy task not because i did not have some enormous love for my family, it wasnt because i didnt have people helping me every step of the way. I had that help but it was because i found myself born astride a nation and the world that is so often divided along lines of race, class, along lines of religion. We had enormous tragic history that all of us confront whether we are white, black, hispanic, asian, muslim, or christian, the notion that in the words of a great writer who happened to a nobel prize, William Faulkner said the past is never dead and buried, it is the past. All of us are confronting constantly the history of slavery in this country, problems that arose as a concept of colonialism, confronting those scars of violence and oppression and struggle and difficulty and hope not only in the larger canvas of history but also within our own families and for me, its not obvious how i was going to integrate and pool together all those different strands in my life so part of my challenge growing up was to figure out how do i function as someone who is black but also has white blood in me a how do i function as somebody who is american and takes pride and understands the enormous blessings that come with being an american but also to recognize that i am part of something larger than the nationstate, how do i embrace my faith when i was a christian, also recognizing i have people in my family who have a different faith and how do i describe the fact that we all have different paths ultimately to a same source, same place we come from which ultimately we all end up. How do we do that, what language do we come up with, how do we expand a sense of empathy, allow each of us to stand in somebody elses shoes and see the world through their eyes and see ourselves and other people, it strikes me that the only way to survive as a planet. That was, in abstract terms, what the theme of is book is about. 92,000 plus hour of booktv programming is available online. Visit booktv. Org to watch full programs on your favorite authors. In the past 25 years, booktv has been on the year 1300 weekend, covered 900 book festivals and featured 22,000 authors including this event. Im amazed eisenhower and nixon got as well as they did. When you think about it, you have two president s rumbling around together, a president is going to be someone who is very driven, has an agenda, has a vision, knows where he is going, white eisenhower, Richard Nixon who at 39 becomes Vice President who already is showing signs that hes on his way. The fact that they got along so well, as well as they did is a testament to several things but eisenhower should be praised because eisenhower made the vice presidency significant. 53 nations around the world as goodwill ambassadors, in 1953 they were in africa and asia and all over the world, 53 nations because he believed in persontoperson diplomacy, he used his vice presidency, my father liked that. They eisenhower led the way on that relationship. Spoken to a lot of my grandfathers colleagues over the years including one in particular, glenn hall, Theodore RooseveltRepublican FormerNational Chairman of the republican party. I interviewed him in oyster bay, new york, close to the Teddy Roosevelt homestead some years ago and i asked him that question and i think he would have agreed with your response entirely, Dwight Eisenhower was not somebody who enjoyed campaigning but he said the two greatest natural politicians, the two greatest natural politicians he had seen in his entire life were al smith and dwight eenhower
