We are giving you a preview of some of the books coming out ups fall for joining us now bankrupt the Tampa Bay Times book editor since 2007. Joining us on book tv Colette Bancroft book editor for the Tampa Bay Times. Ms. Bancroft, we just listed a whole list of political books coming up thiss fall. Many dealing with a 24 election and former President Trump et cetera. Do you look at political books in florida . Yes we are sort of awash in politics here in florida. And i do. I have one book definitely on my list looking for review. That is martin barrons book. Collision of power trump, basis, the Washington Post. Hehe retired recentlys executie editor of the Washington Post. He took on the job not long before basis about the paper. And then of course shortly thereafter trump became president. I am really looking forward to an inside look at that political era. Which of course continues into the present day. Its that kind of insider. And a legendary journalist as well im also very happy hes going to be my newspapers book event in november to talk about the book. Of the political books and looking at that is the one im most excited to start request na bay times you sponsor a book festival or just holding individual events . We sponsor a book festival. It is in its 31st year. The scope Tampa Bay Times festival. This year we have nine authors we have michael connelly, dave barry and lauren groff and another terrific authors. Im looking forward to it. I do a lot of onstage interviews with those authors. A ton of work but also a highlight of my years. That is something book tv should look at coming down to and attending. One of the authors is going to be in the book festival circuit i think is Walter Isaacson with his new biography of elon musk. Have you had a chance to review that . I have not yet. I am both really interested in itss im not sure how much i will enjoyoy it. I am not sure if i will love it or be scared by it. [laughter] he is a very controversial figure but he is a very powerful figure. And isaacson of course is an old pro at handling that kind of person. And looking at their lives and their impact i am looking for to reading it. As i said it is a fascinating subject. A mosque is a fascinating orcharacter. I will give you been doing this and how did you get into the business . Ive been the book editor at the times for 16 years. And before that as the book editor the morning newspaper in tucson, the daily star for several years ive had many other newspaper jobs in between. But before i was a journalist i was an english major and in english teacher and universities. I am the kid whose mothers had put that book down and go outside and play. I have always loved books. It sort of eventually led me into this path of journalism of being a book editor and book reviewer. Im very lucky to have this job. We are a vanishing breed. See what we should applaud the Tampa Bay Times for maintaining the book section and its paper. Absolutely, absolutely. Host theres two other books coming out this fall that w i wanted to ask you about before we go to your list. Ruth simmons former president of brown and smith and peerreviewed university the former president of harvard both came out with memoirs. Is there something you will be looking at . Yes it is. The cliche of the glass ceiling. They broke a lot of those. And again its having an insiders view. They have extraordinary lives, both of them. So yes, i am looking forward to reading both of those. I think theyre going to be im not only interested in women in education but education as a subject. It is compelling at the moment. And some ways in crisis. So what is on your list to review this fall . X i am interested in how the female body grosser 200 million years of Human Evolution. Sheas said the idea of the book sort of sparked when she talked to a friend about Scientific Research and learn that in all kinds of Scientific Research whether it is withh humans, Research Subjects are animals the norm is a mail how does this affect of men or mail lab rats or whatever. And what we have discovered y recently is that it is not a great way to approach Scientific Research. Because womens bodies, females bodies are different in so many ways. As she began to look at Human Evolution there is evidence women use tools before mended. Of course producing milk is what defines a mammals and had a huge impact on humanan evolution. And all sorts of things. Im interested in looking at from that physical point of view. I dont womens role in it. That is when id am excited abot and looking forward to reading. I am interested in the new biography of tracy. One of my long Time Favorite novelists, Lonesome Dove of coursese some people put on that Great American novel. And also so prolific but also outside of writing novels its extremely interesting life as a screenwriter as an antique book dealer i am looking forward to that biography. I am looking forward to a new book by benjamin mozer. He won the Pulitzer Prize a few anyears back for his biography f susan. He has a new book called the upside down world. Meetings with the dutch masters. He lives in the netherlands. He is quite young in his early 20s i think. He moved into texas and moved into a culture he knew little about. And found himself increasingly engaged with the huge collections off old masters paintings and dutch museums he kept going back to them and back to them. It is both a bit more how that helped him find himself. But also a group biography. Rembrandt and part of that. From a new perspective i love art, i paint myself. I particularly loved some of those painters because it is really an excellent biographer. That is another one thats on my list. When you have listed three books you are looking forward too. Have you ever been disappointed and a book you have been looking forward to it and had to review it at the same time . Yes. [laughter] of course. That happened i will not name names. But i am sometimes and that usually happens if it is ann author whom i have read before and whose work work i liked before and has a reputation or standing. And sometimes people produce a book, not every book was a great one especially for people who have long careers. I have had that happen. I have had to write negative reviews about them. I tend not to write negative reviews about baby books or books by authors that are not already familiar with people. Is really wellknown well known in the book has a lot of buzz and it is a let down i feel an obligation to write a negative review. Note yes, i do have to do that. Host what are some of the reviews and what are in a review that connect with your readers . I think it varies so much from reader to reader. One thing ive learned as a book reviewer everyones approach to book is different. There is no such thing as a book that everybody loves. There just isnt. I findom it hard to recommend books to individually to people i reckon recommend them to people at large but its hard to do one on one. I think people like a sense of voice. If you are either praising or criticizing a book people like to know why. I do my best when i review books to give the reader a sense of what kind of book that this is. R so that they can decide if you want to read it or not. Whetherr i like it or not is to me is secondary. It is more important to give the reader a clear idea that this is this kind of book at the scientific analysis or hilarious light novel to read at the beach and to judge books on their own term to tell the reader this is a book thats trying to do this, x, y, z and it does it well or it doesnt. But description to me is as importance. Maybe more important in a book review. Pursuant colette bankrupt of the Tampa Bay Times with one more book youre looking for to reviewing. I am looking forward to tracy case smith book. To free the captives of bleat for the american soul former u. S. This book is pros when it is a combination of memoir her own Family History and the history of racism in america. He is so brilliant as a writer her language is so beautiful. And so thoughtful. This combination of memoir and cultural criticism and history sounds intriguing to me and im looking for to that one. Host what he read for pleasure . Guest i love crime fiction for i read a lot of crime fiction. And i like it nonfiction. I read a lot of nonfiction as well. Suet colette bankrupt is a book editor at the Tampa Bay Times we appreciate spending a few minutes with you. My pleasure, thanks so much. The past 25 years book tv has been on the air over 1300 weekends. Covere nearly 90 or book festivals and featured 22000 authors. Including this event. I am amazed eisenhower and nixon got along as well as they did. When you think about it you have two president s of rumbling around. President s going to be someone who is very driven. He has an agenda. He has a vision. He knows where he is going to have Dwight Eisenhower and then you have Richard Nixon at 39 because Vice President who is already showing signs he is on his way. The fact they got along so well, as well as they did i would say is a testament to several things. But i think personal eisenhower should be praised because eisenhower made the vice presidency significant. He sent my parents to 53 nations around the world as goodwill ambassadors for they were in vietnam in 1953. They were in africa and asia and 53 nations because he believed in persontoperson diplomacy. He is the Vice President i think my father like that so lets say eisenhower led the way in that relationship back spoken to a a lot of my grandfathers colleagues over the years including eisenhower and one in particular was lynn hall who was a theater at roosevelt republican formant national. I interviewed him at oyster bay, new york very close to Teddy Roosevelt homestead some years ago. I asked him that very question. I think he would have agreed with your response entirely Dwight Eisenhower was not someone who enjoyed campaigning but he said the two greatest natural politicians, two greatest natural politicians hed seen in his entire life were al smith and dwight eisenher. Recently the 2023 National Book festival historian Douglas Brinkley discussed Environmental Activism during the 60s. Here is a portion of that conversation. Went Rachel Carson in 1962 warning about pesticides being detrimental to your health, having a carcinogenic effects on animals and potentially humans, kennedy was asked at a press conference what about race Rachel Carsons articles in the new yorker . He said im going to put in a Scientific Panel and Advisory Panel we will look into her research. If it holds up he found the best scientists that came up with a pretty quick report that proves carsons research was accurate. And yet it took a decade to ban ddt is not until 1972 Rachel Carson dies of Breast Cancer and 64 and kennedy of course is dead and 63. But there became this movement is called silent Spring Revolution in the big turning point in my mind was the birth of environmental law in the 60s. Even as late as 1965 and 66 it was called conservation. Lyndon johnsons program was a new conservation. Environments are kicking into an scientists reason the term environments. And it really kind of took hold and ddt got banded by nixon. And 72. And this is people. We have to speak up. On Climate Chaos to date these reports are all there. I feel that in my book with the 50s talking about and Kennedy Administration had a loose document going around about Climate Change but johnson and 65 tried to give a speech about it. As early as 65. He had medicaid, medicare, vietnam, Voting Rights act, that kind of got buried in the mediaflo. I print almost verbatim in the book a memo i dont have any of you remember new york sets a brilliant. He writes of nixons domestic advisor that he had done investigation that scientists are saying we are in big trouble due to co2 emissions. In the letter it says what does this mean . It means goodbye miami and new york city forever. Verdict on seattle unknown. But truly, there it is and then you will find other president S Jimmy Carter trying to put solar panels on the white house and get Global Reports for 20003 the truth is we failed. We are sitting here today there is no climate hero president s. For the reason david writes in his book the oil and Gas Petroleum industry started organizing in 1973 with the Arab Oil Embargo and gas prices went up. They had their own groups to start attacking environmentalists. An takes about 30 years to undo all of the winds of the environmentalists of the 60s and early 70s. They dont like the companies was federal regulation. If you are a Mining Company you do not want to be regulated. Do not want the federal government and the Slight Movement in the 60s as David Broward head of the serra club said not only did they win they had fun for they stop the dam in the grand canyon and Dinosaur National monument. Stop the protest hikes. William douglas Supreme Court douglas 180 miles here in washington to save the canal. From d. C. To cumberland maryland and to stop the highway from coming in. Win after win after win. But by 73 certainly by 80 the reagan revolution kicks in and now if you are an in environmentalists who are seen as a democrat and if you are you are vilified by the republicans and the republicans are seen active of the oil and gas industry and these new foundations that were born like Federalist Society and Cato Institute and Heritage Foundation whose goal it was to undo Rachel Carson.
