Msnbc i asked you for your reaction to say the words president elected biden and your response to me was interesting. I would love for you to expand on this, you said it will be great for you to not have to explain to your daughter where the president of the United States was saying mean things about you. Yes. I dont know if you remember this, but the president when running for president came to minnesota two days before the 2016 election and basically went on attack against somali immigrants and Somali Refugees and for me in the community that i represent for my children, it has been a fouryear assault on everything that we believe and stand for down to our basic identity as american refugees in this country. So i have had many long days and nights having to explain to my youngest child who is eight and the two older ones who conceptualize what is taking place with the political discourse before her it has been challenging for this to happen. For a lot of our kids they hear about the president is someone they are supposed to look up to and see as a leader theres a lot of the respect for the presidency we try to instill in them and then someone denigrated that as the president and that has been challenging. Its one thing to have someone attack your comnity at large its another when th someone is the president of the United Statesnd directly attacking youby name, personally how has that felt . On a personal level to standing up and have my children be exposed to it with the last two months of this election cycle waking up every single morning from Text Messages from my siblings because he chose to speak about me at every single rally. It didnt matter where he was sometimes multiple times a day as he held current rallies throughout the country. And i thought a lot in the last two years with that attack on me meant for the people who see themselves in me whether muslims, black women, immigrant women, immigrants, refugee women, immigrants, refugees, pee are aspiring to be leaders in our country, many who went to live in the Inclusive Society and create progress for our country. It is something to analyze and understand and reckon with. When i first came to the United States and middle school i remember getting a letter of recognition from than president clinton and i remember reading this letter and i wrote about in my book , my father was proud of the letter. I didnt care much you as president but to my father, it was an acceptance of our existence in this country and another welcoming letter becauseel you get one when you arrive as a refugee. That is where the president is supposed to be a representative of, they are a leader ofr the nation. They are supposed to make everybody feel as though they are they are president and so now to have four years of a president who has occupied the white house, has not seen himself as the leader of all of the people in this country, and has not extended a welcoming hand to every Single Person, it is sad and disheartening. The day it was announced he lost his reelection i tweeted to my now deceased father who passed away because of covid complications at the president did not even acknowledge that we did it to be president of the United States and the country that he love will hopefully come back to understand the strengthen our diversity and there are better days ahead of us. My condolences on the passing of your father. The attacks from the president on you directly and personally and specifically also had to do with the Election Strategy were part of his plan to win minnesota which she narrowly lost in 2016. It didnt work. One could say because minnesota traditionally was a democratic state. Do you think the attacks on you backfired . And the attacks in every Single Person backfired and black women that were subject to his vitriol have shown up in mass numbers to refute his presidency and change course in this country. Young people have shown up in mass numbers to say it is brighter. That it would be an inclusive country and a place for all of us and then to be a part of the process to create that. And then by a large to shore up the numbers that they have not in a long time and then to say you will not use to spread the message of hate and division to this country. We willre not only, not to like to but we will show the country what it means to stand up to a bully like you. President trump lost minnesota. But democrats to win the seed say that they would win and in fact republicans ended up gaining seats and then we will find out next month of republicans will take control of the senate. Even though joe biden won the popular vote and with 5 million more votes than President Trump so i do think the president elect went from coattails to winning the white house to expanding the democratic majority in the house . In minnesota we have a tradition with their ballots and we saw that happen not just in minnesota but throughout the i country. But in many cases that there was so much focus especially for me and even with for me because i was so much focused and defeating trump to make sure biden one won the election, with those attempts to reach our constituents as we had the highest turnout in our district. And then to express how there was a lot of concentration in the volunteers and then to send trump packing and for a lot of us, that in itself for what we were after. I would say that campaigning during a pandemic really wasnt something people were prepared for. I had to fight to establish a ground game. I know a lot of my colleagues did not do that. So there are a lot of challenges that happen when you dont have that one on one facetoface conversation with constituents. And republicans continue to expand the ground game the democrats did not. That infamous caucus phone call after the election that apparently gotot heated. And said in the New York Times and other places that hammering home the fact that democrats are we behind when it comes to digital campaigns with an Online Presence so with your take on that that came from the congresswoman from michigan in a political profile that said i think she is better informed speaking of our own district may be the 9 percent is on twitter but that is how much of mine is on twitter and then she goes on to say that is a big part of what we invested in because my voters during covid were still getting gas. I bring this up that is there between the progressive rate one progressive wing which you have identified without moderate wing of the party is in conflict or at loggerheads are we making too much of this or is the Democratic Caucus in danger aside from the senate, in 2022 losing the majority in the house . Its important for people to have fluency because focusing on constituent serviceses which we all understand how valuable that is. And then running for reelection and for the first time and to utilize every mode of communication and with the election. And the thing that aoc and myself and others understood when we want our primaries , our challenge in the primary , is that during covid, you have to utilize aggressive Digital Strategy in order to get your message out your constituents. And that means also and part of the work that you do Going Forward and is something that we have been saying and that we understand the Democratic Caucus is content and there are differences in the constituents that we serve in the party is unique in that regard. We are not monolithic but we are also a party this is we are a party of the people so to prioritize the needs of people is something that we need to be unified and how we address the social economics that people have dealt with for decades and it speaks to who we are as a caucus. And then to continue to have thatto conversation. And we are not having conversations of the people and then the republicans win. So i am wondering, it is the message or the mode that is the problem for the democrats in the Democratic Party or the message itself . Do you think the reason why democrats did not gain the seats that it wanted or some democratic members of congress were not reelected because their constituents the voters didnt like the message or the policies they were running, on . Yes the responsibility is on the candidate themselves to figureca out what messages work as they communicate. Obviously we have a message as democrats about what it means to address the needs of the american people. But in the way that it is suitable is something you understand as a candidate who is running ino that district. And when you fall short of tha that, it doesnt fall on the candidate running across the country for a seat and to message to a different constituency so our challenge is to figure out how we run the 21st Century Campaign thats also figuring out how will you be in front of people getting the message to them . Whether doorknocking or using individual ads or to be on tv . I never imagined i would run tv ads and thats about adapting an understanding and for someone who had 17 million to spend against them by democrats andan republicans and i can win both of my elections in the primary and the general. Im sorry to kee harping but are tre areas . So internally is a big family we have dcussions b is not as strong as it is being made o to be. I take your point. Listening as we talked about the nuance that candates depending on their district need to employ well running for reelectio reelection, at is eminently reasonable. And tryingo understand, am i making it a risk . Weill leave that aside. And t last poi to that, often times whe people deal challenge, i remember getting a primary challenger , i could blame every Single Person on the democratic side who has attacked me since getting to congress and say this is why i have the democratic primary challenger. Or the colleagues that donated to my opponent or the democratic governors who donated to my primary opponent or i could say this is a challenge that i need to overcome because the blame game does not serve me its not good for my psyche. I am better at thinking about how to provide a positive message to my constituents so i can bring them back and win this election. And what i have ibo t seen for e other candidates this has a lot to do with your history before coming to congress that you chose to go take pictures with people who had defined the Police Science and it had a lot to do with the way you conducted yourself in the shortcomings that you have. Ur so you can continue to blame people across the country who are serving their constituents are you can say i want my election and i have overcome all of these challenges because thats a better place tos work from and as an optimist in the room how we positively move forward instead of looking back and try to get stuck on and aow for ourselves to better serve on serve our constituents . Sin you talked about th congresswoman has reported on the calwas angry, very angry about the impact of dend the police but also the use of the word socialism within the t rty does s not have a point . The negative impact at they have on democratic races around the country. I have not seen a single analysis with the Research Data point that is something that ha has. If you look the ads run against her with the school she was teaching in saudi arabia that was supposed to besu a hotspot, you look across the cotry they were using their vote with miss pelosi against them and the two senate races in georgia it is with schumer to change the world. There are so many lies and sneers that ve an impact on races and to blame a movement that had shown up for us in the most aggressivee way to deliver a decisive victory for president elect biden is shamefulhi and something i cannot even believe my democratic colleagues are doing. What are your priorities for your constituents in the Fifth District in your next term our priorities are to figure out how we have the biden and harris administration. Minnesota is experiencing a surge and dealing with the impact of this pandemic in a serious and personal way figuring out how to bring our country back from financial crisis in dealing with the looming eviction crisis that preceded the pandemic and canceling student debt and dealing with the Climate Crisis that we have. And some of that recognizes healthcare and to make sure to have access to healthcare. This conversation is so great and we are running out of time. You are on the Foreign Affairs committee. So how do you balance the desire to talk about israel and palestine and open debates about support for israel with a very real sensitivity of jewish people in mind . Dealing wh the country israel and its continued place the middle east and the impact on Foreign Policy then it needs to be conversation that we have on a policy level toddress how we talk about a conflict that are operating on an equal footing. For state heard ofor policy or what does it meanor for us and to advocate for the rights of people and how we continue to have a cversation on statehood for people who have exrienced and justice for so long. Vice president elect hars has broken through a ton of barriers and ceilingjust by being elected Vice President elect. Nt the first woman. The first person of color. The first black wom. Fit south asian woman. If you could take a step back and talkbout what it means to have the incoming vice prident of the United States be a person of color and someone and you can look at to see your reflection. Shes also the first daughter of immigrant to ascend to the ce predency. When we watcd her come on stage, my daughters first thoughts was, she looks like me, mama. There is a famous quotati was a you cant beat what you nt see. And for so many of our daughts, they will get aney opportity to see themselves in that pition. And to knothat there is no limitation o their ability to ascend to a powerful position like that, is something tt is beautiful. I always said represented on Representation Matters in a Representative Democracy for the ability and itself is something we cannot quantify.
