Ticket for having its an honor to be one of the most independent bookstores. They stand for saying that first of all, i will mention as one of americas great independent bookstores this book is available and we do have books all over the country and all over the world or if you are local we do offer instore browsing and curbside pickup, tell me a little bit about this book. I knew i wanted to write a book i have lots of ideas for the books, i had to have the first book, if you dont like this i wont write any others but if you do have lots of books in my head, i wrote different proposals to the publisher and i got rejected by lots of publishers a lot of authors do another one publisher who came to me from the press and his name is Stephen Power and if it wasnt for stephen i boudin to begin because it was unheard of in the public industry, he edited my proposal and sent it back to me and literally, that does not happen, he says rick if you write this book i will publish and i said i dont have the stature to write that book, just because it is a heavy topic and so many people are so educated and conservative thought, i did not put myself in that category, he said you can do this book in and help you do it, i put together jack and i wanted to take this opportunity to introduce john clark who is joining us from sunny florida, john is someone we normally meet in a coffee shop so meeting at a bookstore is actually appropriate and we discussed ideas and we have robust debate and collaboration about ideas so we normally meet in a bookshop, when i got the deal to do the book i approached him and said what are you thinking, he was engaged, john has been a partner in this whole book, i felt intimidated to think through all the concepts, there is not a chapter that john did not help me shape, i wanted to write it for two reasons, conservatism is bashed in the media particular to the centerleft and the liberal left, that could hurt my feelings, with the things that they sent a new that they werent true and i wanted with a rational governing philosophy, to my friends on the left i would say progressivism is irrational and can be presented as a philosophy, it is not my philosophy, my philosophy is conservatism but i dont open serves anyone well to trash each others philosophy when in the end we have so much to agree on in our country is a Constitutional Republic and whats that mean to get everything done at all we have to compromise a people have different ideas than you in the same way if you want to vote for somebody who you agree with 100 of the time you should run, that is one half of the audience, the other half are people who self identify as conservatives, but seem to be more policies that are antithetical to conservati conservatism, i wanted to lay down that marker as well and for people who are unfamiliar with conservatism, because their young or have not paid attention to governing philosophy i think this book lays it up pretty we well, i think i define conservatism actually the way john does, he said that the order of liberty, the order of liberty in the sense if you take away the order you just get liberty and that the libertarian philosophy which is not my philosophy, we dont automatically reject ideas because their new, we test those idea against the established ideas and if they are better we can migrate to them, if theyre not we would not throughout something that is working very, very well for something that might not work very, very well or isnt working very, very well, i make that case on immigration, trade, healthcare, on the Second Amendment and many of the issues that are in the books, that was my motivation for writing civil rights, by the way we cannot think of a title we had all these ideas and cindy got a call still right, the reason it is still right on the nbc political analyst i get accused often and going to the enemy, im on msnbc although i daresay there are more conservatives to appear regularly on msnbc than they do any other cable news networks. One of the reasons i like to be on msnbc, i had to learn to present a case to a liberal left wing audience, and i think over time its been pretty successful, i think while i havent convinced everybody who watches the network that they should embrace conservatism, i get a lot of comments that i did not know what conservatism was in at least now i understand as a rationale so being accused of a lefty and i am a trump critic, they say youve gone over to the left and i say no, im still right, so i thought the title for an immigrant loving hybrid driving composting american, which is all true, i think we should be a proimmigration country and i drive a hybrid and i Love Technology to protect the environment, and we compost here at the tither household and make two to 3 yards a year that we use an organic gardening. I never thought that was a liberal idea, i thought it was a conservation idea. I will say our local town operates on a pay as you grow garbage where you pay per garbage bag and composting has reduced her household garbage by a third. Isnt that amazing. Yes. I will take a moment to say youve given us your credentials, tell us a little bit about yourself and conservatism. Briefly recognized met we were working on a campaign and i have worked as a speechwriter for a few candidates i worked for local level to the National Level, i think rick we worked together in my background, i have a degree in Political Science and economics in iran and Investment Firm for 18 years, i filled my company about ten years ago to my Business Partner and i wanted to get into the writing side because i thought conservatism was not getting a fair hearing and i thought i could maybe help a little bit without. So i can bring my finance, what i learned on that side to the economic side of the arguments and i dont think there presented well. Im hoping what this book can accomplish is that we start a conversation because we used to try to win the hearts and minds, we really wanted to know what it is that we believe, one of the fun things about writing is stress testing my own ideas, do they work, but im hoping that this does, it starts a conversation because i think right now the political environment is such that we should be shut down, that does not help anybody and i dont claim to have all the answers by far and i think over time my ideas have changed and thats a healthy thing, that is a positive sign and like i say, im hoping that it does start a conversation, what im advised by staying in our reviews, people that are saying im a lifelong democrat but i dont really see much, i disagree with the book, i think thats good and i think its starting a conversation. Being willing to have a conversation is a very good thing, where shutting yourself off and having emotional, making your choices emotionally on a rational subject can be problematic. Did conservatism need to be redefined and for persons who may be joining us seeking to learn can you define conservatism for people who may have had a different idea about it. As they say in a nutshell, they never actually define conservatism, you can go back to the writings of William Burke and a lot of great conservative writers which is as i mentioned before a little intimidating to write this book, i did not feel the stature to be in the zone but i wanted to lay down, i dont define conservatism per se, conservatism as we talked about earlier is ordered liberties, the idea that individual Freedom Matters and its in a declaration of independence of jefferson wrote life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and he puts them in that order because liberty is precious for people who dont have life and its hard to pursue happiness if you know youre not free, that combination and the government was supposed to protect those things in that order, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That protection in the pursuit has made america by far one of them wealthiest prosperous nations in the world and were having an argument about that, what does that mean and i do think conservatism does an okay job of explaining the economic side, we dont always explain how conservatism addresses some of the problematic sides of our american society, for instance people who were in need and people who are dismissive, pull yourself up and be independent and work hard, all of those things are true but there are people who are never going to be independent and theyre always going to need help, we dont often explain the idea of decentralized government can actually help people, conservatism in a nutshell, ill tell you a story it is about franklin delaware roosevelt who is a greatest politician of the train for sentry, i dont think he had arrival, roosevelt was running right after Woodward Wilson, he was a democrat and he was loyal to Woodward Wilson and he was going to run as a democrat, his fifth cousin modeled his political career that was teddy roosevelt, he was progressive and fdr was also progressive but he had a problem, he could not run as a republican because uber was republican and uber was in the middle of an economic collapse, so that was out, he could not run as progressive because under Woodward Wilson progressivism has taken ugly turn in stems from eugenics which was the science that we can actually decide who gets to procreate and who didnt, that was a very ugly, paper a survey does the broadest of womens right to vote, that was a good thing but also broadest popular elections of u. S. Senators, i think its about thing, it cut the responsible the or the leverage that the state legislators used to have over the u. S. Congress, it eliminated it, state legislators and congress can pass all these laws that they continually have to deal with and have no leverage to push back, in the old days they said senator you keep pushing out on us and were gonna be right back home, that is not the case anymore, finally they test prohibition right in prosperous times if you can imagine, the rowing 20s that a wonderful time in the past prohibition, fdr could not run as a progressive as he really wanted to and wilson was progressive and in fact teddy and Woodward Wilson ran against each other both of competing Progressive Agendas but from different parties, wilson claimed to talk as a third candidate even though hes a major party candidate, he got his clock cleaned and fdr did something really interesti interesting, he put out a Progressive Agenda but did not call for progressive, what he called it was liberal, which is interesting because up until that point the word liberal and liberalism had been associated with what we now recognize as conservatism, thats where the word liberal comes from, john and i woul define herself as clc liberals in the presense but he just called it liberal and it stuck in the conservatives ended up calling themselves conservatives and that the monitors of the Major Political philosophies and i would argue what is happening now trump calls himself conservatives, he is not, is demonstrable that is not and unfortunately many people who follow him call himself conservative in their not consider the Republican Party has a convention and for the First Time Since 1856 in which nine of the six types in the original Republican Party platform, for the next hundred years the Republican Party was a procivil rights party, they lost that and this year they did not put a platform at all as if to say we dont know what we believe, they passed a resolution that says where was the big guy in whatever he says we are behind, thats a really sad thing because parties cannot sustain themselves on a personality, in the same way Israel Politics parties come and go with their leaders, if jim and jan yahoo were to pass from the public stage, his party would collapse because theres nothing under it except for benjamin netanyahu, the party is now the term party when he goes on one way or another it will collapse because its based on one person. Parties need to be based on ideas, when we win and i spent my career helping the republicans win, when we win, my question now what do we win, what do we get in the answers higher deficit, trade tariffs, mismanagement of a National Public Health Crisis that is not costing us trillions of dollars and millions of lost jobs, that is not winning to me, i would like to return with a philosophy of governing and conservatism has always been at the kids table even if they were invited to dinner, they got to sit at the adult table and they drove the agenda for quite a number of years now we dont even get invited to dinner the posture sit at the dinner table and call themselves conservatives while john and i are not allowed to come to dinner. That is kind of where i think we are in a nutshell and why conservatism really needs to revisit, if you read my book and dont become a conservativism, that is okay, my goal, i understand why its a conservative and why it works and whether i believe it works or not, that is one thing, at least you know its a rational theory. You mentioned that your work as an analyst on msnbc forced you to examine your own beliefs in depth and they say to teachers to learn, for yourself as well this teaching people, did that definitely reinforce your beliefs or did it change them . Its funny i have nine children, amusingly enough, and i homeschooled them, i homeschool all of them, whats interesting probably one of the greatest preparations for writing speeches is teaching my children and explaining steps to them. So i think theres that, i think youre absolutely right, that is the principal, its impossible to separate teaching from learning and as they say when we have these conversations the thing for me from a conservative perspective much of what we believed in was to present the private sector able to come up with many of the solutions, i think he did an amazing job in the environmental chapter because hes explaining that is his life. That is the way that hes living his life in the reality, hes not saying conservatives are painted with the brush of we dont care about the environment, that is clearly not the case, were making the argument that conservativism, the private sector might simply be the best way to address this as opposed to leaving it in government hands. Again i think many of the areas in this book is to essentially make the claim that things may be better addressed, its not that we dont care about these things, of course we do, were just trying to figure out the best way to get there, were trying to achieve the common good and as political aggressiveness, were just arguing of the math in terms of how to get there found a sense. Yourself rick . I forgot what the question was. Reexamining your own beliefs and convey them, does that help reinforce your own beliefs. Absolutely, when you have to explain to other people what you believe in, ill give you two examples, when i first went on msnbc i started going on the Chris Matthews show, john and i had been watching Chris Matthews for as long as there has been cable television, he was a legend and Chris Matthews worked on the hill worked for three separate congressmen, he was the Capitol Hill Police officer before he worked on the hill and politics. I always had respect for chris because he doesnt pontificate, he actually worked for the speaker of the house and worked in the speakers office. That is an experience you cannot trade so i was invited on the show hardball for the first time, it is very intimidating, my view was to get invited back, to survivor. Chris is generous and over the years i kept getting invited back born work, when i first started with msnbc i was the person on there that people love to hate, we all have those people, we cant take the night off because you just hate them so much, theyre just enjoyable and entertaining because their nets and that was me i would argue and love to argue but it was not very likable. And then over time i decided i worked on president ial campaigns that if i was over going to be effective in promoting the conservative philosophy i was going to have to learn how to convince people that it was reasonable so i had to learn how to speak to people who do not believe what i believe. And find common ground, i think thats worked very well and as john said he read the reviews that i talked to people who read the book and theyre very surprised, ive had conversations with people who read the book and said there is so much i did not understand i did not know, thats been very gratifying and its all about starting the conversation, i also taught people how to run for elected office with thousands of people all over the world israel, rome, the grease, mostly the United States and he really got it they get through, and my original failed proposal, what i said in the initial manuscript, i cant remember, it was 7000 words of questions its quite a number of questions, that is long and it was hard because i really had to think very deeply about healthcare, people who dont have insurance, people with preexisting conditions, and have a reconcile my Second Amendment rights with fred waybright about who endorsed the book, fred if you dont know who he is he lost his daughter at Parkland High School in florida, i write about him and its in every chapter i tried to think of, i was already accused of putting out stroman, that was not my intention, i wanted to answer questions that had been asked of me and how i answered, i tried to take what progressives asked hard questions for conservatives to answer and i want an answer to them and i want to start there, its also Cross Marketing theory, heres the theory if i start a chapter were there nodding her head yes for the first three pages as opposed to throwing it across the room then they might have a chance to get to the ideas and they might finish the chapter if i could just do some storytelling, connect with them at the beginning of the chapter, then they might read the rest of the chapter where it might get hard going, i think that strategy mightve paid off. I will take this moment to remind people that the book is available from houstons bookstore, all purchases of the book from gibsons bookstore which rick was very kind to centers, thank you very much. Can you tell me some your biggest frustrations about how the political conservatism has been changed by Public Perception through the Republican Party. There is a lot of issues there, let me start with trade and then moved to healthcare and immigration, those are the three topics that are in the conservative thought in the way the Republican Party has decided to go instead, please dont talk about trade, its such a good and as to terry theory, heres the heart of trade, the human being is designed to create, its our most precious gift to be creative, is what is made great artwork, great music, written great books, it also makes great products and great services, peoples ability to create and try to get people to part with their dollars to buy their product or their service over somebody else and that has led to the aggregate trillions of different transactions of all people competing for those dollars in the free market and what trade does is is your government decides we dont want you to buy these products or those kinds of products because of whatever reason because of different labor practices and fully government et cetera. Its one thing to say dont want to buy products from a company because we grew up in enslavement camps, that is a moral to buying chinese products because of uighur labor camps but in the broader sense we have trade deficits with those countries, mostly china precisely for the reason you have a trade deficit with your local supermarket, you keep buying stuff from them, voluntarily, no one forces you to buy them, every freemarket transaction is a voluntary transaction, its not a compulsory transaction and they never buy anything, they never buy anything from you which is a very interesting story about hong kong, the way it comes to the British Empire, to trade porcelain and rice and other agriculture products from hong kong but the chinese would not buy anything from the british, nothing it was a oneway street, sounds familiar same way today and they would only take silver, and became a crisis in the British Empire because they were running out of silver because they were sending other silver to hong kong, the british came up with an idea and what it was they were going to sell something to the chinese that they cannot resist and it was opium and they sold opium to the chinese and they said if you buy the opium were so sorry but we only take silver for the opium and then the great outflow of migration from hong kong back to england and meanwhile millions of chinese became addicted to opium which led to two separate opium wars which led to a british acquiring the 236 square miles of the greater hong kong territories, hong kong itself is very small, 7 miles by 7 miles, the british gave, im not advocating colonialism, dont get upset when im advocating what the british gave to the chinese and hong kong was freedom and what were seen today in hong kong is a pushback by the chinese, they know the goose is laying gold but theyre about to do it in hong kong has become one of the wealthiest places in the world because they simply have contract law, independent judiciary, military under civilian rule, elected leadership, freedom of the press, freedom of religion and all the rest of it and people say they want to take something out, thats all hong kong became because they dont have any natural they dont have gold, silver, natural gas, the efficient agriculture but they became wealthy because of the creativity. Donald trump had renegotiated the south korean trade agreement which is called course, its offered nothing significantly better than what the previous one had with the proclamation to the contrary. The one thing i could find no significant is that americans are not allowed to buy south korean pickup trucks until 2032, i thought to myself what if i wanted to buy a south korean pickup truck, what if the south korean pickup truck is a truck that i need what if its a truck that i want, why does my government want to keep me from buying south korean pickup trucks and when government interferes in the market and that way there propping up one in picking winners and losers, ill give you an example i was also our trade policy with china has led to the greatest Welfare Program weve ever seen and i put the gm bailout, it made it look tiny by comparison and its what obama struck and people said it was good because it saved the plant and the company and the jobs and thats all great, i dont hold a grudge for that at all, it made money, all of that is true but heres the problem, when your government decides to take your money and give it to a company and you dont get a service or product in return, in other words i did not get a gm car or a truck or door handle, i got nothing but gm got the money and it was all the same in ohio, it is now closed, the reason is close, not because of unfair trade practices or labor laws in mexico, it is closed in ohio because of americans did not want to buy the chevy cruze and they made the chevy cruze and when they werent buying the chevy cruze they cannot sell the chevy cruze, they had to close the plant, that was painful but heres the bigger problem and the problem i like to focus on, all that money that went to gm arbitrarily or because of the politicians decided they should go there did not go to their competitors, did not go to the upstart companies, you can name some like tesla and others he were actually designing cars that they might want to drive or that i might want to buy and if you lose, we lose tomorrows future innovation because the government literally took your money and send it over and put money into a company that was failing and i know that sounds harsh but over time wise it fair to take the American Consumers money and give it to Company Whose products and services you dont actually consume. Ill wrap up a little quicker on healthcare, i think the republicans in short, the democrats voice had somewhat of an advantage of proposing all situations, the democrats can always point to a larger massive Government Program and say this is our answer to healthcare, where is the conservative have been a disadvantage by pointing to the private sector and the democrats say they dont have a plan because its not a government plan, but heres the problem with the republican plan they did not actually have a plan, there is no plan, there still is no plan, four weeks ago when donald trump announced on Chris Wallace he was going unveil a huge healthcare plan, have you seen the healthcare plan, there is no healthcare, its incredibly complicated, it isnt one thing, obamacare is 7 of the market, 93 of the market is not obamacare, your private insurance, tricare, medicare, medicaid, any health services, it is extraordinary complicated and there is tons of money of healthcare, there is no free market in healthcare, will explain that later if youd like, then finally immigration, the conservatives, Ronald Reagan was pro in 1986 was a testimony of that, he was never any to immigrate, the Republican Party, what i say about immigrants, the fear that trump generates which is encapsulating of the wall in mexico, we have five new miles of wall, what the wall encapsulated was people who are fearful of two things, tech, security and the overwhelming of our culture. I remind them, when the italians can we did all all speak italian and when irish came we do not all become catholic, when the jews can we did not all worship in the temple, when the germans came will have to learn german, now the muslims and the hispanics are getting the same horrible treatment that we treat our immigration rate i dont suspect any of us who are nonmuslims that are praying in spanish anytime soon, no immigration is ever over that overwhelmed the American Culture, its never happening history, its made our economy better and stronger and better as a nation. More innovated, more traditionally diverse, people do bring a lot into our country, their ideas, their food, their traditions, its wonderful, why do we want to go in that direction, why do we suddenly decide now, we might look at the lowwage workers who happened to be latino and you seen them they working construction and they work in lawn care and they may be delivering the amazon packages, their children will be doctors, lawyers, and ceo, god forbid congressman, that is the way immigration has always worked, what is seen to pelosi and Rudy Giuliani have in common, do you know what it is. I would guess their parents are immigrants. It does not come immediately to mind even though the last names give them away. Because the italians have simulated into our society, we think of them as americans and one day ill say rodriguez and fernandez, people will say i dont know, i give up, theyre both hispanic or should see that but i didnt see that, were getting closer every single day toy dont worry about the American Culture and i dont worry about economics because the next time there is a caravan we should send buses and get them here as quickly as possible because if john and i will ever relay Social Security and medicare somebody will have to do all the work, pretty get to d lots of immigrants. That was trade, healthcare and immigration, do you want to talk about the environment . I have to admit my environmental chapters little stark. My editor had a real problem with, there was more notes in the chapter by far than any other chapter in a really dove, i first give a background on myself, until the story about the grand canyon and why its my favorite place on earth in the little adventure have their that was amazing like a godgiven gift so you can read about the inherent the tyler household we compost and we compost all grass, wheat, newer, all the organics that come out of the kitchen, everything gets recycled, i take the recycles personally to the recycle center because they dont trust the trash man is actually taking them there, i just had this terrible suspicion that is getting mixed in with all the other trash in all her efforts to covertly and separate is not being met, i do recycle myself, i love the environment. I think its foolishness for the republicans to see the environment to the democrats. I make two recommendations, whats democrats and whats republicans, one on the republican side the environment can be a great issue because its a job creation issue, its an innovation issue, its an exciting feel the trend field. And at the same time if we can help the planet, thats a wonderful thing, i identify on the democratic side, im a little critical of the democrats, i think the foolishness of dismissing the environment is not an important issue is just politically crazy, but on the democrat side them a little harsh and its because ive had many conversations about the environment and it leads in the same direction, rick are you a scientist, no im not a scientist, its a really subtle time, if youre not a scientist, youre not qualified to talk about this okay so i cant talk about it, but i dont identify myself, and then they say if i Say Something about the environment in an equivocal way, lets say i believe that Global Warming is occurring, the earth is occurring, but im not entirely sure to the degree anthropomorphic Climate Change that is manmade, admissions or adding to come i dont know to what degree that is true, when i look at the science, they say that Rocket Science is hard in Rocket Science is actually by comparison is easy, all the fix variables are known so i either get a rocket into space i have to put fuel to create trust in the few away so much and im working against the force of gravity and i gotta get into the air to a trajectory to meet to a certain orbit, i cannot do that math come im not smart enough or that math, those are all known factors and thats why we can dock up to the space station because we are very smart people who understand and know how to do that math, the environment is different, there are hundreds of variables in there may be many variables that are hundred that are known and hundreds that are known but we dont know what they are who we have to make estimations in those are called guesstimates and that is fine and we may be guessing right, that is fine, i hope so but maybe not, because some of the conclusions are catastrophic. But there may be unknown variables and so its a very difficult thing to predict so one of the things i always get in trouble, when people talk to me about the environment they always refer to the weather and then ill make an example about the weather, hurricane laura went from hurricane 123 overnight and nobody predicted that, but rick that the weather but you cant not talk about the weather without Climate Change, what you just did. And that if i say im not sure, i believe that we may be warming the planet and im concerned and i think we should do something about it though say im a denier, youve heard that word, climate denier, that means i dont believe in Climate Change, i just told you i did, those in religious terms, those are doctrinal terms, that is like arguing about the virgin birth coming we cannot do it because thats what i believe is a christian and without us discussing it, you will not convince me otherwise and sometimes i feel like i talked to the left about the environment and i cant talk about it because its a belief that is doctrinal and based on the doctrine that somehow exist and its in religious terms and i cannot have a discussion about it, i think the democrats could win on the environment just in same way i recommend but theyve not to drop the hindi pending, they said we all were gonna die in 20 years and people begin to lose cut ability. What i hear 12 years is not fixable in adobe terrible, i dont know that itll be terrible in 12 years were going to find out i hope it is not. But it just seems to me that scaring people about the environment for longterm is not a good political strategy because people begin not to believe because its so big, its one thing about the environment in positive terms and protecting the environment and creating jobs in the future i think is a very exciting field and thats the way we should go about it and in the end is far better for environmentalism then crying. John. I think in the book there is a story, he is an interesting background, his family apparently did not have a lot of money growing up so when he would ask his father or complaint of his father, his father had interesting response, his father was response, go make one, go make one so he came up with developing the Led Technology and so instead of having the government lightbul lightbulbs, he invented the led bulb which now you can have pretty much any color of the rainbow, the energy is used with light as opposed to heat, its much more efficient, cheaper, they last forever, i dont remember replacing led bulb so i think from a conservative perspective, it is clearly not the case that we dont appreciate the environment as rick was saying, as a christian god wants us to care for the earth, i dont regard that as gods command to me too care for the earth but i think that the answer is supplyside, as with the creativity, the answer lies in the creativity of man and we look at things as manmade problems, there manmade answers, the reality, what is the next led bulb, what idea would that be, i went to the numbers in there in the book, the amount of energy that is saved every year with led bulbs, it is incredible, its like the greatest thing ever to save energy, whats the next thing going to be, heres my guess, someone is coming up with it now, maybe somebody who has done a conversation with his daughter mom and single make one. That is how things happen and i think by unleashing the creativity, maybe thats the best way to address what ails the environment, simply let supplyside as opposed to the government saying our believe things dont happen doing it that way putting a Government Committee in charge the greatest invention did not happen by Government Committee, it does not seem free to be that way, i think thats where the answer lies, the creativity of men. Thats a good place to insert, the creativity will solve more problems in government but i think i also agree there is a role for government in areas where there is no natural incentive to create super instance the led bulb was a Government Contractor and they went to the private sector to solve the problem and what they needed was an indicator that did not produce heat and this is how the led got invented but the government does do something extraordinarily well, the government did get us to the moon that was an incredible effort and there was no Natural Market to go in for the moon, there is basic science and we talk about this on the chapter of healthcare, government does and enormous amount of work that leads to the development of drugs in the private sector in my opinion profits from that and that probably needs to be rebalanced or licensing, its not fair that taxpayers pay an enormous amount to the National Institute of health and science and they reap the benefit but they dont read the profit and i dont want the government to become a prophet because the profit enterprise, thats why we dont need a ceo or businessman but the government does amazing work in doing basic science is the private sector and the internet is a perfect example, the pentagon protected the Nuclear Codes so they could send them around the world and they would not physically stuck in one place and that developed over time, nobody imagine what the internet wouldve been like at that time and so government the last example is the pandemic because i get asked this a lot in healthcare, we had a National Healthcare system then we would deal better with this pandemic, that is even true, i think the pandemic had to be dealt with on a National Level because it required a national response, its a national Health Crisis and it cannot be dealt with statebystate, city by city, town by town level, needs a needed effort and as far as i understand from the beginning of the trip or administration was dismantled and never assembled and thats where numbers are so dramatically bad and were given your new example over death rate of the United States is 20 times worse than all the Asian Countries combined, 20 times worse in its twice that of europe, we are really way behind the eight ball on this because we did not respond to a National Pandemic in the court need a national way. I think we have time for one more question and i think i might have john lead with this, you very large family, how do you recognize large political differences and personal relationships, perhaps in marriage or in parents or siblings, if you are conservative, how do you reconcile relationships with persons who disagree with you. Thats a really great question, i actually like to hear the other side, i invited, it is funny rick was at the coffee shop and we get together, i like to hear the other side of things, i think one thing that is happen lately, its gotten worse, maybe it was their 20 or 30 years ago and we didnt notice it as much but people define themselves politically, i dont know that thats super healthy, what we need to do, friendships are more important i think rick talked about this a few times in the fact that we can get together and disagree, recognized dont think we agree on everything, that is okay but the reality of it is i like to keep the friendship in place, there will be things that we disagree about, maybe we see plays differently. Rick is a patriots fan. Thats right, the reality instead of sounding each other down, we need to listen better, i think it overly starts because were not going to get anywhere until we do, winning over hearts and minds is important but listening, we should listen, as they say were trying to adapt and trying to figure does this make more sense and i think we have to stop doing that and we have to focus on the friendship and realize there things we can disagree about thats okay, it really is. And yourself . I say in the book relationships an are foreign politics, your relationship with your family, your friends, you want to preserve them at all cost then if your friend cant talk about politics in a way that is not going to preserve your friendship and you should agree to not talk about politics, i am friends who are term supporters and we just dont talk about it, they may come to dinner, they havent since covid but we find a million other things to talk about besides politics and i often on twitter occasionally i have a follower who says they cant stand anymore, striving me crazy and ive often responded many times to say turn the news off, take a few days off, stay away from social media for a few days, clear your head, connect with nature, thats really helpful, i think theres a deep connection to human beings desire to have nature and get some perspective and get healthy because we need you to come back but if you find yourself going crazy because of all the news that is nonstop, it is too much and people need to take a break and sort out what is important and sort out those priorities. So my book may not do that for you but maybe there might be a chapter two. The trying to regulate encryption is a quick fix and it might feel good but is not really going to help because a concerted criminal activity is always going to find ways to hide their communication one way or another and itll leave all the rest of us in a more vulnerable state, so im concerned that policymakers really should look at the whole picture when theyre making this choice.
