Maria bartiromo is anchor the mornings with maria and with wall street on Foxbusiness Network as well as anchor of sunday morning features on the fox news channel. If you are a busy woman maria. And shes also twotime Emmy Awardwinning journalist who was the first person to report live in the florida New York Stock Exchange in 2011, made history once again as the first female journalists to be inducted into the hall of fame. Duf also with this is james, her coauthor this book an assistant editor and the author of best of the last column for the wall street journal as well as serving as a fox news contributor. James also was a former investor at the United States securities and Exchange Commission it there coauthors of the new book, the costtrump, china and american revival. Economic revival after the coronavirus shut it down and they are viewing that the playbook is resulting in the greatest job market in history can output americans back to work. They say the president fight cutting red tape and slashing business tax rates spurred Corporate Investment done to the number of u. S. Jobs may save these policies and once again lead to prosperity. Were just a few days from the president ial election. A very spirited discussion so maria and james lets jump right into it and thank you for joining us today. Maria bartiromo thank you. James thank you and its an honor to be here. Thanks to the club. Duf obviously just to a few days to finish the voting. Thank you so Something Like 75 Million People have already voted. Do either of you have anything that you want to say specifically about the election and with these next five days may hold. James freeman yes, i think it will be a nailbiter. Look, i think given the fact that so any people have already voted. The cursing summa decisiveness on the part of some of us. I think the next five days will be important in terms of voter turnout. I think were also going to be focused on ballots in making sure that we have free and Fair Election and there is no hankypanky going on is of course we heard stories of that insane stories with the balance being thrown away. James freeman is a tough election to call. Not that its easy to. Winners and losers and any time youve got so any states with these. Dramatic changes in the way that people vote and when you have this kind of Audit Campaign where essentially both parties are relying on donald trump to drive turnout. I think this is no my lifetime we have candidate leading in the polls was trying to chronically have a problem through the primaries and the general election with inspiring and motivating exciting voters. It is odd. Maybe whether you love or hate trump, that is enough to get you to the polls. Duf im always reminded to that famous lineman people asked me with the Election Results are going to be. Like by yogi, reluctant to make predictions especially about the future. So block to figure out what will happen especially after the surprise that we saw in 2016. So the title of the book is the costtrump, china and american revival. James, can you tell us how you came up with that title. James freeman is actually marias idea. To just focus on things you can measure about donald trump, there are so any things that cannot be measured. I think he obviously inspires very tense emotions both in his supporters and his opponents. But when you focus on thank you can measure, you tend to focus on really the essential premise of this candidacy in the presidency which was economically for the revival of prosperity for American Workers and also relates to things you can measure when we talked about the collision. The dominated so much of his presidency. You cant really understand his presidency without understanding that resistant he faced. Not have to do things that not only cannot really really be measured but in the end, turn out to be nothing at all in terms of a dossier of accusations against him which ultimately was proven to be false. Maria bartiromo and i think there is a cost to all of this and that is why we looked at what would happen if we were to see a reversal. There is a cost to one doing the tax legislation. There is a cost putting lots of regulations on the economy after President Trump has all deregulatory programs. There is a cost to turning the investigative intelligence agencies of the United States government against the sitting president. Not only did what james just referred to as the collision story, not only did that divert resources away from other things that were really needed in government. But it also when theres a cost our trust in government today. Right now there are any people who say, i dont trust the fbi. I dont trust the cia. We cannot have that in america. There is a cost to all of that. And there was a cost to diverting all of the energies at the time of our investigative intelligence apparatus of the u. S. Government instead of focusing on for example, china eating our lunch. And stealing intellectual property and forcing a transfer of technology. We had our intelligence agencies looking for collusion. Which we known no was a made up story. So there is a cost to what takes place in the greatest country in the world. There is a cost to the policies that create economic progress in Economic Prosperity in america and its impact of the rest of the world. Duf what i thank you so very interesting about this book is so any people are caught up in Donald Trumps personality. And you i think accurately state that a lot of times, his conduct has been worse. But americans who often does focus on the personality does not focus enough on the policies. For example, resident obama very well liked by a lot of people. A lot of us are very proud to be the first africanamerican president. But if you talk with people today about whether its on the left or right, there is some real doubts about the importance of his legacy. And i think the battle of this book is really the focus on that legacy. And i think it does get lost. And i think there is no greater example of that and what is going on in the middle east today. I was wondering if you could address that. Maria bartiromo for sure. President trump made it a priority to try to create peace among nations in the middle east. This is a priority that he has had a relationships and charm and constant negotiations to go to the middle east and talk with allies and to try to normalize relations of the fact that you are sing the united arab say they will normalize relations with israel and then now the latest in sudan. Thats an incredible story for somewhere ever. Such a thing decades. And i think this is something that gets underestimated because the media constantly talks about his personality. If were just a little about i dont love the tweeting mores personality is not my cup of tea. It might be okay but the media has gone to such extremes to really ignore any successes that this president has had in his focus on these pet peeves that they have about him in terms of his personality. You never hear any stories the media about middle eastern peace. You never hear the fact that income inequality actually began to narrow at the beginning of this year with earnings on the bottom end of the scale going up. These are real successes that are measurable and in plain sight and yet the media refuses to talk about them. I think there is a cost of that as well. And instead it is a sad state of affairs frankly. Duf i think the middle eastern experience is a great example of this kind of i guess they call it the style versus the question where barack obama, you have what i think we would all say very statements like presentation, very much applauded by the experts around the world. The International Diplomatic community. The press. He is a look and feel of Serious Business as he did his agreement with iranians. Will beneath the surface, it ended up being lots of cash sent over to them who who then did not stop there funding of terrorism. You look at donald trump in the style is unconventional. Maybe a lot of people do not expect much. And here we have an amazing turn of events with countries that for decades and hostile to israel. Now coming to an agreement. I think if the Political Science didnt hate donald trump, they would probably be marveling right now and how he somehow managed to create leverage the most out of nothing. By the sort of threat amending station which im not sure that israel had any intention of doing but it was enough to persuade or allow these arab leaders than to seize the moment. An offer peace and commercial partnership. It is stunning to me that these sort of Game Changing agreements in the middle east are footnotes while as maria said, will probably hear on the news tonight about some offhand comment or tweet that will be forgotten in the week but is treated at the moment with very significant. Maria bartiromo that is no ball prize worthy. It really is. Duf so any residents have held that in the past. Think that is exactly right. As were having this discussion, listeners are submitting questions which im going to try to include in the discussion. Theres been a lot of interest in this issue we are discussing and some of our listeners are asking, what you think applications are for economic policies and opportunities Going Forward. But this deal allows. Do you have any insight that either james or maria. James freeman just as a threshold question, the upside is enormous. More conflict is costly and instructive. And is not enable Economic Growth. Here we have this suddenly new opportunity all of that region. I think the skies the limit. This is one of those issues really happened, who really should say this is not covered in the book because it happened afterwards. But i think it is similar to what we cover the book. When there is the start a surface level treatment of donald trump is a sort of a button. And then you look below at the achievements and they are remarkable. Maria was talking about the job market. According to the governments jokes report, regular report banana job opening, really the best job market ever is always the government has been keeping statistics in terms of number of openings. We actually ended up several times in the era ascending records. Having that number be higher than the number of people which was new in the United States. It is exciting. Economic opportunities in the middle east at the car boundless. Maria bartiromo and i think that peace begets peace because of Economic Growth. When you have people feeling better and more secure, and saying potential for Economic Growth and potential for prosperity for their own families, that creates peace. And wouldnt it be nice to see the United States create an ally group of countries that are actually together saying we will not accept terrorism. We will not accept more than instruction. This is all these things start by saying alliances the way that you are seeing parties also done that against chinas bad behavior. He is absolutely on the arguments that are pushed back against the human rights abuses and against spying out of the countries. Thirty countries at this time have now been banning while way. President trump lead that in in creating alliance because that behavior. I think that partnerships and middle east will also be mistreating an alliance against bad behavior and terrorists. To them are also getting a lot of questions, and our listeners are very interested in Foreign Policy because of getting a lot of questions about china as well. Maria, you just touch on some of the things that youve done in the past. And you discussed at great length how he got to this position. What is your viewing james feel as to what we should be doing Going Forward and ask for ten years. In terms of our relationship with china in general and also specifically economically. Maria bartiromo i think now it has become paul understood and china has broken promises and broken the rules on a global scale. The Chinese Communist party is the villain. It is not about the chinese people. This about the ppe. Which has been stealing intellectual property for decades which has been forcing transfer of technology and acquiring companies all over the world. And just stealing their technology. With one goal, to create a different world. Have a china is the largest superpower, the most dominant and militarily in any start figure that out in your talking about a communist country wants to rule the world. They want to be the number one superpower. Theyre not doing it through innovation or hard work. Theyre doing it through theft. And even during three to have your period of backandforth between the u. S. And china tried to do a trade to deal. Chinese communist party would never admit to intellectual property theft. Meanwhile, we have spoken with any ceos that have actually put a number on it. The former ceo of microsoft to said the 10 billion a year should be microsofts profits and instead, is going to the communist party because 90 percent of the companies in china are using the microsoft operating system but only 1 percent are paying for it. Then another great story about motorola in the books whereas one employee was working at motorola friend decade is actually stopped at the airport, she had one week to get out of the u. S. China and she was caught holding all of these trade secrets. In the directions for patents the motorola had. This is been going on for decades. Because he was leadership has wanted to open up access to china, we have wanted to have a partnership with china, the two largest economies under the expectation the maybe china would change is a democracy and say well, maybe we will live to the middle. We want to be able to open up the economy so we can have a fair relationship. That has not happened. Actually, the opposite way when Chinese Communist party has become even more inward. And even darker. And as a result the president has put consequences in place saying the tariffs from chinas bad behavior. In a few sticks coronavirus is an opportunity to invade other countries did invading killing 20 soldiers there militarizing south trinity and moving into hong kong with him laws and regulations. Brick and even more promises. So i think at this point, is become much more wellknown in terms of the Chinese Communist party school and how it wants to unseat american President Trump has been the first president certainly that ive ever seen or learned about is actually put consequences in place and pushed back on china said no, were not going to allow this cpp to spy on americans. Still our technology ncs. As the largest superpower in the world. Duf we understand in the book, then the tariffs has cost. Theres no question about it. In our hope is that the president pursues the meeting seeking zero terms in other countries. If you want keep the pressure on china. Because this is friction. It is that they cost. But we go through the history. We did give him a lot of credit for pointing out that the premises of our engagement with the communist china, really is not proven out for any years. The United States has been welcoming china into our Training System in our Capital Markets etc. On the premise that they are reforming. If you go back to the First Bush Administration after, why was there not more of aggressive response from the United States. It was because george w. Bush believed that democracy was rising there. We didnt want to disrupt what seemed to be a very hopeful moment. I think thats a fair characterization of his views. But now, more than three decades later, i think you have to say, not reforming. Is actually crushing democracy in hong kong. As we speak. Just this week, a number of the students, young people who participated in democracy rallies over the last months are being rounded up by one of the just across the street from the u. S. Council to believe where were going to seek asylum. I think it is been a healthy rule for the president to make even it is funny, people think of him as having a populist view. But i have to tell you that alone globally latest that i talked to think he deserves credit for bringing honesty to this discussion. And whether it has people we talked to in new york or text ceos in silicon valley, think a lot of them will speak very favorably being in business with china on the record and then off the record they were tell you about the intellectual property theft in these other issues. And i think we can all debate what is the right response. What is the tariff tool, going work. The right way to go or are there other tools better. I think recognizing the problem which has been largely ignored for a very long time, maria writes in the book about how when she was at a business coverage for years as cnbc, the story was all about that you gotta be in china. In tap into this Enormous Growth potential. As if there were no downside. That was sort of the attitude i think a lot of companies. And its the Worlds Largest car market now is big and so any big categories. I think we do have to recognize that the reforms, this Economic Engagement were premised on have not actually occurred. Maria bartiromo and i think the Trump Administration sees the corporate sector as not catching up to where we are with National Security. We called him in the 18 the book is china does not want to trade with your companies. They want to radio companies. That was a quote that he gave. In a speech the summer a sickly saying that this is the norm are you and this is how they operate. And i think right now, any Companies Still are looking at china as that growth story they refer to 21 and halfbillion people with the Trump Administration is fronting and trying to communicate and there are National Security issues around us and for the one and halfbillion potential Customer Base aside for a minute and think about the National Security concerns around america. In this for the Trump Administration is trying to communicate. And into this corporate sector as the Last Mountain to climb to communicate that message. There seems to be a moral compromises being made by these Companies Really they are willing to do things in china in terms of disclosure in cooperation with the governments that they would never agree to here in the United States. James freeman and to any of us, thats extreme. Maria bartiromo you are right. If you are in china and you are in google, forget it. Its just not happening. In a google agrees to that. And got a different Search Engine there in china. So they can be in china. Its very troubling actually. Duf hunt to continue this trip around the world. But we need to get back. James on something, i think it is very important and you mentioned george. That george w. Bush, how he talked about this optimistic view of china and that led to a lot of the problems. Where there is a stealing happening and they were extremely optimistic and have any of us must highs and has not turned out that way. It turned out well. So do you have any thoughts on that and given what is going on with peace talks elsewhere in the middle east, when you see things going with our relationship with iran in a position in the middle east. James freeman i would say that even more incentive than they used to to join this community and countries if you will. Its kind of an emerging coalition joining together. Against them. Iran is interesting, as we were talking about china, one of the things that we may rethink the china issue is there is a sort of a mantra that our engagement with china is freetrade. And of course we like freetrade. Milton friedman pointed out that we kind of trade you in updating the communist regime. My point is when iran does horrible things and threatens neighbors and terrorism we seek these economic tools to dissuade them. I dont think there a lot of people saying, but we should have freetrade the thugs. Whereas the thing for a long time, was seen as out of bounds to say they knew we had to think about how to be used economic encouragement to get china back on the reform path that they are not on in we hope they would be. But as far as windows, do you think that these agreements read pressure on them to reform. Take the opportunity is there for them to have a beautiful congressional relationship with the u. S. I think he is ready if they want us sees that moment. It. Maria bartiromo i one thing that donald trump is done that is been real effective is to keep any of these countries on their toes. Its an unexpected situation. We opened the book a story of the first one is actually the second meeting. The first meeting in terms of the overseas welcome was with Prime Minister of us truly operated three months into his term, he hosted an sort of rolled the red carpet out and his beautiful dinner. He did an interview with mimi told me about deserves and they were having chocolate cake. Most beautiful chocolate cake you have ever seen. In the middle of having served him chocolate cake, President Trump delivered the stunning message to him and said, by the way i want to explain something, what you know that we just fired 59 missiles to syria because they used a chemical attack of the people. President trump whos who that story with us and talk to us about how any have interpreted this and i didnt think i was a idea. Its a good window into his approach on things because while people say that is crazy. Crazy like a fox because he leaves this notion of even what is he going to do next. I think that has also resonated with the iranian leadership that you dont know what he will do next. And he is not afraid to host gigi pain and his luxurious resort and brought the news that he just dropped 59 rockets and strikes in syria which is obviously an ally of china. Then unexpected has have served him well and served the country well. Duf say that i can take any admitted turn it into a score his fourstory. My son used to coach. What he found interesting was that he never knew from one day to the next what was going to aspire with jim at the head. While that may be somewhat disconcerting for those who work under him, when youre out of the football field field on sunday near the opposition and no idea what is going to do, so while i think some people focused on the internal imagination single one within the Trump Administration, there can be a real benefit of having the unpredictable personality. Duf i guess i would add that we can. The future. James freeman President Trump related to iran and perhaps being unpredictable to the world in order to Service Getting run of soul money was basically the middle east chief organizer and sponsor of terrors so i think there were some in the time and thought this would immediately cause conflict in the region. And so far, looks like like it had the intended effect. Duf was one outcome of the word ally was important. A study about world war ii and how important it was to be able to develop such an incredibly alliance are the world. And include russia we obviously had grave concerns about spray to write a book about ten years ago talking about the real difference between the United States and china and we had about 58 major allies the chinese only had really no other allies. And it seems to me in some ways is been a lot written and a lot of concern about the fact that in some ways trump almost seems to be more comfortable with his his adversaries that he does with his allies. In fact i had an official said to me, we kicked off the canadians. You know how hard it is to take off a canadian. So if you want to address that issue and once this alliance. The importance of it Going Forward and especially relative to the threat that we face in respect to china. Maria bartiromo i think the President Trump makes it a point to communicate that he is not, uneasily married to the American People. He is not going to have as much as we have allies, if you do something against america, its not something that you promise. He will call you out. I think the u. S. Mca is indicative, a great trade partnership that the u. S. Canada and mexico havent is better for the american worker. I think that he continues to reiterate that his priority is america first. In making sure that you are buying american and hiring an american. And as a result, that may bother other nations including our allies. But the president has continued to promise the American People prosperity. And jobs in america. He is not going to apologize for it. And i think that is what is based likes. This what if you like he is an outsider. Youve got congressman and congresswomen and power for 20 or 30 or 40 years. You did not see the kind of progress that one would expect. Some donald trump what in their with latest guns a blazing and he wanted to bring the swamp and do this and call you out. And as a result it threatens those people in power and slip on power. Anything that is the reason these hated by some people who are entrenched in washington because they know it is not going to apologize for calling you out. Even if you are an ally. The mayor may not be the right approach the right way to make friends. But he did not go to washington for that. And that what he makes very clear. Duf after sort of the dusting with the Prime Minister, he did the deal with the mca. I kinda liked nafta. This to me, it was like we keep an available bit more for automobiles and maybe some other things. But on the other hand, this was not the damage that i would expected and some things. I think in other ways, its actually an improvement when you look at some of the medical intellectual property provisions in there. And for your silken valley folks, embedding in section 230 in the ca, i think was quite an achievement. Obviously were debating how this ought to be interpreted but i think that the conduct of Foreign Policy is unusual. And sometimes when he talks about it in a way that sounds very transactional, think a lot of us is kind jarring. And it makes us scratch our heads and bring our teeth. But i do think when you look at Something Like germany, i think he is reasonably making a point when he says let me get this straight. You want more help from us to protect you against russians and he wants to spend a lot of resources but you will not stop doing this project with russia that will make you more dependent on their energy supplies. Youre basically actively creating more leverage to russia against you and your asking us to protect you from russia. So i get the point he is making there. And again, when the language of the approach is often unconventional maybe not something that a lot of us to do. I think in some ways, bringing in a new perspective this awful read. Duf son of the things that you talk a lot about the book are the tax cuts. Now that is been so beneficial not just to american industry but to the market worker. And how it is enabled people to bring the money from overseas back home. And so their obligations to their shareholders. Can you talk a little bit about that. But the impact has been and also, republicans historically have been fiscally responsible. And there was no offset thanks to those tax cuts. No offense and the programs another has been a huge expenditure with respect to covid19. We talked a lot about china. One is to be the International Currency in china. A lot of due to the u. S. Is the u. S. National currency. And for my perspective, it would seem that large deficits would increase the values of our currency internationally. He can you talk about the benefits of the tax cuts the risk that we run by not paying for those in or the deficits. Maria bartiromo James Freeman f research including done by people would end up being your people with the trust white house during that were present up paying Corporate Tax bill. This is the result of a lot of research, a lot of countries all over the world. You raise the Corporate Income tax you get lower wages from workers. Really the academic argument is not whether this occurs and how much. Is it just part of it ends up being borne by the worker on the full part. If you had a higher tax bill on business. So i think that was among the great trump achievements, really a game changer to bring the worlds industrialized World Highest income tax rate down to a competitive level. That is where, i agree with you on the debt and spending. As one of the concerns i have about coronavirus. And if by some politicians are more open to lockdowns and all of the cost that is generated. A bit as bad as it is been, financially, we really have not been presented with most of the bill yet. Our taxes have not enough. Federal reserve has. 3 trillion. And worry about the dollar as well. We talk in the book about that. Thats why we are hoping since the president has nominated doctor judy shelton to be in the Federal Reserve board the senate will go ahead and confirm her. She is a hard money independent thinker at that Institution Needs and they are going to have in the years ahead. After really expanding the ballot sheet to make sure that the dollar remains bound. This religious foundational job of government. Is not to destroy your currency read. Maria bartiromo is really important point. Not think the future is looking increasingly like somebody will win the digital dollar story. So that is something that i would like to see the Administration Come out with a plan for structure to deal with what we are talking about. In the meantime i do think that the tax cuts really did move the needle on Economic Growth. Youre right about both sides spending restraint has gone out the window. So far the markets really havent gotten impacted by this rated with Interest Rates in different levels, they will. That could cause a rule disrupting the could spiral out of control. So i do think that in the next four years, should trump get a second term, is going to have to think about how to rain and spending. Hes going have to think about and communicated plan to cut the debt and deficits. Now if you look at both plans, trump versus biden, even though President Trump is promising and other tax cut in second term, you want to get the middle class taxes and joe biden was to raise taxes 4. 3 trillion even though using revenue raise undivided side, is actually also promised so any expensive programs that the committee for responsible budget says that his programs are actually going to head to the deficit read to it or so the total trust programs would because of all of the spending. Theres no into the spending of the near term. It would expect in a second term, President Trump would have a lot more disciplined. And i expect that he will come out with a plan to save Social Security as well. And it will mean things like lower retirement age and the people with longer term getting less than the structure is in place right now. I think he will do that. Hes not going to talk about that during election air force would do think thats a priority of this. Sue and a number of people announced, they appreciate what you are saying about what he is done during the first term and the contributions and he is made only thank you so the biggest shortcoming biggest mistakes he has made in the first term that you would like to see completely different policy in the second term if he is reelected. Maria bartiromo i would like to see President Trump attempt to bring us together. I think that is one thing that is a mistake writing the president has his way of doing things. And then enclose that he wont say that i am sorry. He wont say i made a mistake. That is a mistake i think. I think that in a second term, knowing that he does not have to worry about reelection and he can do what he wants for the next four years, it would be nice to see him approach some way to bring us together because theres just way too much divisiveness in this country. The eight has gotten out of control. Something has to be done. In the leader needs to do it. And i think hes got it in him to do it. He is right about the resistance. The media has never given him a break. Inside government has never given him a break. Partly because he promised to go out and call you out in whatever was under performance. Lets not forget he was only in the job a couple of months nancy pelosi was asking, the fbi to admit get him. Threeyear said, Nancy Pelosis sat there and ripped up his estate of the union speech. Somethings gotta be done to bring us together. That is something that he is going to have to deal with. James freeman i think that the spending is the big failing. This is one area in which he is unfortunately utterly conventional politician. Hes very unconventional in any ways but sadly, he was just like the members of the house and the senate of both parties it is predecessors who failed to enact restraint. As marie suggested, the think it would be a reason to vote against him. Because his opponent is promising spend as much or more. But i think at some point, the u. S. Does face a reckoning. World war ii, the deficits and the debt. And will have to be addressed. We have really benefited its wonderful which faith the world has in the u. S. Dollar. I do think its extremely dangerous both in terms of the fiscal the fed. I think that there is the reform that has to come the next term. Duf were getting a lot of questions on the area of the president s conduct. I remember when clinton the Monica Lewinsky scandal came out. I had young children. I was thinking what do i do. Do i turn off the tv. He told me kids to watch and is known telling them not to watch news because its a type of behavior that i dont want my children to be emulating. And my wife now says, our children are so old that we need to start lying about their ages. [laughter]. And for those who are in different situations and james based on the background there, it appears that youre the state where children are at a young age. James freeman very very young. Yes right. Use say that even if that was not the case. Duf but is important to our country. Its important to how we convey not only to the rest of the world up into our families, the conduct of the president. So to what extent is it in itself something that should be unacceptable. We should be called out on more and how much does it flatten out all of the positive things that we have been talking about for the last 45 minutes. James freeman i was watching the republican candidate debates during the 2016 primaries. And was not impressed with behavior. I was on marias network may be under show several times a skies not going to be come president. And he did. I guess over time, ive come to the conclusion that perhaps as unreasonable to expect people to change all that much. After the age of 70 for example but i do think that is part of who he is. And i guess, bleepco through the book that we knew the weirdness, the comments in the twitter was one come with his presidency. What is really kind of stunning is how successful he has been any achievements in terms of a austerity rule the law, we are talking about this Amazing Group of justices and judges that he has seated. People not only impeccable credentials but as the law was written, not as they would like it to be. This is a huge legacy for years. In the cool last well beyond what anybody remembers of this particular comment here and there. Also, have wondered at times these rough edges with him are part of his success. I think there are certain moments where he is, because he is comfortable joining the washington consensus, he has done some remarkable things both in terms of the Game Changing reform on the u. S. Competitiveness for taxes and regulations and with the appointments. I have to say, somebody who really treasures the constitutional governance, i think that judge Amy Coney Barrett is an amazing addition to the court. I dont think a generic and republican president wouldve had the wisdom and courage to put her on the court. Duf i want to get back to the core issue of bavaria, just want to back up a little bit on that question will had a big lead. Maria bartiromo understand people who would get turned off by President Trumps rhetoric. Totally get that. That is not why he went to washington. Went to washington because he wanted to offend the system. In two friends off and ensure the American People having the opportunities in the jobs that they want. I think there is something called personal responsibility. Learning certain things started home. And yes, we all want a perfect person to be representing us. The dots all of that eisen crosses all the teas, perfectly way we want it. But sometimes when you have a perfect politician says all the right things and does it with the allure of dignity and elegance, the actually follow through. And dont get it done. So think that people need to make a choice. It may not be able to get the person that looks great on paper and then also pictureperfect analogy a representation of who you are representing you are to President Trump is actually walked the walk and talk the talk parties actually come up with policies the moved the needle in American Families and an american lives in did this and the job creations. So you have to think about what is your priority. Is it have someone who looks perfect and speaks perfect never has a bad word or is it someone they want to actually move the needle on your life. And your families opportunities. Example both but in like we dont get everything we want. This is another reason image washington to be perfect and polite to everyone. He actually went to do just the opposite, to not be polite and to call you at your not doing job and make sure to remind you that youre supposed to be representing american wives and families. Im not bothered by it. Duf the question because youre from new york. Maria bartiromo a lot of my friends had an engine im not bothered by it. Duf i meant that sincerely. There is that type of mentality thats one of the reasons that we are so successful is there is that. Were going to do it. We will get it done and i think thats one of the reasons in this country is so great. Maria bartiromo and we have rules and home. It does not mean that we should have our rules of the road for our family and at home. Thats not what i want you to say this not what you should be saying. He went right. On a personal note i will just add that having lived and worked in both washington and new york, it was a pleasure moving to new york people told you exactly what they thought. To tip exactly. Duf the first and can be jarring. But i think over time, you appreciate the contrast between washington. The thing was fred thompson, after his acting career, he became a senator. A nascent in washington, he longed for the sincerity of hollywood. [laughter]. Duf one of the things you talk about teams with the court. Were coming up to the end of our time here. But i just wanted touch on this a little bit because i think minister the trump legacy understood in this area. I interviewed the ninth circuit on two occasions. Im go through the process and seen on an excellent system he has to put in place. In the quality of the people that he is the bench. One of the things think that people get confused is judicial conservativism and political. In the judicial as the documents mean something. The laws mean something, the powers given to the president means something. Anybody should state is online is one of the main contributions i think he made to the court. Running is no better exemplified by fact the kavanaugh and another who both were nominated by President Trump, no two justices had ever disagreed more. In those two justices on the time the bench because if they are looking and theres trying to understand with the original intent was. At the same time, is been concerned about the banner in which the justices have been put on the court. So can you weigh the balance of the quality of the people on the bench versus the perception by some of the procedures that hes followed to get them on the bridge. James freeman unless u. S. That is obviously so much of the coverage of judge Amy Coney Barrett in the press has just been completely messy and irresponsible and painting her as some sort of religious kook. I think for people on the left, there at all concerned, they should be very much reassured by her originalist and contextualized philosophy which means if by love laws passed by the democrats enacted by democrats, they come before her, she will honor what is written. Know what she would like it to say her wishes said. She will interpreted as written. This is very much in the scalia tradition. You see when an enormous impact he had produce a positive impact to say politicians contend with a will but its the law and act binds us. So taking the law as written will often lead socalled conservative justices to yield little results because not following a political agenda. The following what the law says. I think a properly understood, your appointment should be welcomed by people across the spectrum. Were actually starting to see some realization. Traffic at the name of the author but there is a piece in vanity fair from someone obviously on the left saying, this might not be so bad. We have a person who is conscientiously going to protect laws that are assigned as enacted in that we treasure. Maria bartiromo i also like the fact that she did not go to an ivy league college. Shes the mother of seven. She represents a normal dealing with family, career with not have them on the bench. So i think it is refreshing. Duf on other things obviously on everybodys minds these days is covid19. In the presence policies or a policy sprayed the mask and all of that sort of stuff. The barometer and that kind of goes up and down defendant on what is going on fox when the world. So the recent outbreak in europe, they indicate that our response is not that different than the other countries. Can you talk about the style that is opted in fourth. It can impact that has had on his response to this terrible crisis. If. Maria bartiromo President Trump has made very good moves in response to coronavirus. I think agenda worry 2020, i was that davos at World Economic forum and he did appear, this is okay, will be fine. I think that point, he did not know enough about what was coming at the aspirated i dont think anybody did. I think he got a track really quickly because a week later, i met him on january 22nd and we work talking about coronavirus coming. And on january 302,001st, he stopped all travel from china. It was a huge move. And remember when he stopped all travel from china, and thinking wow, that is aggressive rated and was buried and must not forget what any of his critics were doing at the time. They were impeaching him. They were in the middle of an impeachment trial which i think started on january 16th and finish in february 5th. Joe biden called xenophobic to stop all travel from china. Nancy pelosi was having a party in chinatown saying come on down. We are good no problems. I think sometimes when his critics come up with a narrative, and drive that narrative forward and little by little, and micah just believes it. Frankly, i do see a lot of truth to that at all. His critics continue to say is biggest failing is covid19 and yet he stopped travel on the 31st. He rallies together these pharmaceutical industries go these work speeds to start working on a vaccine. Moves to try to get the proper ppe. It and i think failing that it had was around testing. There was a major problem with testing initially. That was the cdc. They were defect or detect and correct effective. So that is a fair argument and also fairpoint and initially when we didnt know much about it. He recognized to be as significant as it was to come. It overall i think he made very good moves in response and i am really struck by the fact that even though we know that this virus originated in wuhan china, the Chinese Communist party downplayed it, cornered the market for ppe and lied about it and then exported it all the world with no warnings. His critics had not said at all, what about china. We recognize that china did this. And continue to blame him and completely ignore that china had. Want to see protest. Wife are not leap on protesting china. Instead were protesting one another which i find is so crazy. James freeman i think obviously it was a threat that few people understood. I think you want to take any of the Public Officials whether it is nancy pelosi, anthony felty. You can come up with tape or their searing serious, not serious, mass, number aspirated etc. Fascination among the media folk early on was we dont have enough ventilators. We created the system to produce lots of them. Then obviously maria describes the struggles there. And it ramped up testing in a very high level. It is not true that we had feared the worst in the world. There countries in europe, countries in latin america that have higher per capita death rates than we do. And there was a constant stream the last several months how these crazy governors and the sun belt with a functioning economy at the same time and to preside over massive debt. We have a lot of headlines of raising cases unfortunately it might be surprising to a lot of people that per day is well below above the peaks and reaching the number of zero and the infection of which there is no cure or vaccine. We were talking about the cost we need to have a functioning economy. And with the new virus that nobody knew much about. To say we cannot live in a permanent state and isolate people and we need to live our lives to focus and to protect the vulnerable. Individual freedom has to get back into this. And he want to decide knowing the risk of your grandchildren should be allowed to. We need to encourage those and isolate them. The most difficult process with the dodgers winning the world series last night and the nba championship is the next . With the rangers in the nixon or mets or yankees .
