Then debate, tonight, the candidates for u. S. Senate. Good evening and thank you for joining us for the second of our state debate. Tonight we are hearing from the candidates who want to represent you in the u. S. Senate. Equity things this year, the senate of this debate is a little different than usual. Our been lesser here in the studio, to follow covid19 guidelines republic and challenger, courtney is in a separate studio. Because of several thoughts they today in the u. S. Senate and restrictions around travel, related to thehe covid19 can democratic income it is live from a studio in washington dc. Before we start with the questions. Its a look at the candidates rated. From approving covid19 relief to Supreme Court nominees of the u. S. Senate plays a Critical Role in shaping american lives. But New Hampshires interest in these extraordinary times represented best buyd experiencd or a fresh voice in politics. We have used more common sense. The Voters Decide whether they want to keep you are whether they want to throw you ouout. The first woman to be elected to governor in the u. S. Senator. Republican challenger, courtney is a firsttime candidate with a career in law. Their own personal roots and records in New Hampshire have been a key issue in this race. We just moved here two years ago to run for the senate. She is a career politician. She has been there far too long we have clashed everything from everything from healthcare to finance reform. In the winter could play a key role in developing this pandemic america. We evaluated all legally qualified candidates and selected those considered most newsworthy according to itsed objective criteria to participate in this debate. The candidates will get one minute to answer questions tonight and 32nd rebuttals will be allowed at the moderators discretion. Thank you for joining us m tonit. From washington we want to start with an opening question about the pandemic that is created this very unique set of that we are in right now. The president s need treatment and hospital forth covid19. The cases are up in any places. Holidays are coming and people are concerned about missing their families. In concerned about being out of work for the schools are also in flux. Stators going to get through this constant crisis. I think step one is follow the guidance, follow the guidance from the scientists, follow the guidance from governors. Then focus on family, focus on community. To be safe, wear masks, socially distance and wash her hands. He did a member of the public community. Fin be a good member of your church. And your family. And work together. We need to be compassionate. To each other. We need to care about each other. We need to make sure that we are taking care of everybody in our community. If someone needs some help, help them out. But do it safely. We can learn how to navigate this economy, safely and we can learn how to navigate our schools safely. We can learn to live our lives safely. The way we will do that is to follow the science. And be good neighbors, be good family members. To be Good Students in school kids. How are you going to get through this. There is no doubt that the coronavirus has changed everyones lives. So any people are struggling. We have got to seek Good Behavior models at the top levels of government. We do need to follow the science. We need to follow mask wearing and social distancing and handwashing. But we need consistent guidance at the federal level. We need a plan for more testing and Contact Tracing to fully invoke the defense production act. Some are making what we need here at home. Unfortunately,om my opponent whe he says follow the science, if you listen to what he says throughout this campaign, he is questioning mask wearing during the primary. He said that hospitals were not in urgent need of funding. He has suggested to cut that they not follow the Governors State home order. We need to be consistent. We need to let people know that we can get through this if we work together. And we follow the science and we listen to the medical experts. Lets get right into the questions. Good evening. Two of thedi view. From us now, the congress has been debating a second round of stimulus and response to the covid19 crisis. Recently the president said heul was done negotiating and that we should wait until after the election and of course he has since changed his mind. Just hours ago, he voted to move forward with the targeted bill allowing for another round of paycheck protection programs loans. But it continues on the large and morepr comprehensive packages. Their negotiations happening among the democratic leadership and Republican Leadership in the white house. Oh, i am not the democrats and republicans still been unable to meet in the middle. We do need to continue to negotiate because people are hurting. They do need more help. All businesses need help. Thats one reason i supported moving forward with the second round of ppe this afternoon. But unfortunately, we have not seen Mitch Mcconnell and the republicans in the senate be willing to come to the table so the negotiating so farar has ben done with secretary on behalf of the white house and as a policy. We need Mitch Mcconnell to come to the table. We need to work to get a new package done. Just like we did with the cares act. I was really proud of the dbipartisan work on that packae the past 96 zero. As part of that we were able to get 1. 25 billion New Hampshire an extended Unemployment Benefits and help for hospitals and frontline healthcare workers. Help forbi e communities. In the ppe programs. Double the amount of money that was first proposed. We need additional help and it needs to be a big package that can provide hope the people need to. Was the president s inconsistency about this in the state entered a mistake. What specific programs to think needs to be funded right now and fwhy. I think six weeks ago, the senate had an opportunity to pass 500 billion package to help people with enhanced unemployment and more ppe loans. And senator shaheen followed the lead of Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi and did nothing. The voted no. That was six weeks ago. Right now from the could be more money for Small Businesses and right now, there can be more money for enhanced unemployment. And, the senate can be negotiating these other things. Now what people are receiving help. That is why we need new leadership in the senate. He this idea of allowing people to suffer for six weeks, six weeks because of inside of the beltway, the negotiations and the b holding out while people n New Hampshire are suffering. In this what we need new leadership in the u. S. Senate. Hyget it done then you can have the negotiating these other items right now. Thirty seconds to respond. I agree. Itsat unfortunate that technicl politics 63 that the time that the heroes act got to the senate before he wase willing to senar bill the senate and the fact is the bill the Mitch Mcconnell put on the floor at the end of july, does not provide help the people need to. We have a hospital in New Hampshire the just went bankrupt this week. I was at the Catholic Medical Center must make and they need financial help. We have got to help hospitals and schools and businesses and everyone who i is hurting as a result of this pandemic and Mitch Mcconnell has not been willing to come to the table and my opponent is just another rubberstamp for Mitch Mcconnell. Fifteen seconds in the rubberstamp there. Youve got deleted the senator shaheen. You should propose money for the hospitals in the 500 billiondollar package. People can be receiving help right now. People would receive help right now. And you can vote on the net that shouldve passed. And the people in New Hampshire would be getting help today. Small businesses are closing and they need help. Ourin next question. Good evening to you and will begin and as we continue to operate in a pandemic economy. A new problems are arising for Granite State as American Workers in general, any who work in jobs where they rely on volume of business or tips to make a living, waitresses lakers bartenders, people who work in salons who may be back on the job that are earning far less. What specifically can be done for them in this reentering the workforce that are now underemployed. Corky messner i think it starts with the Small Businesses receiving the guidelines they need to open up theirhe business profitably. And i am impressed. I have visited so any businesses around New Hampshire and the innovations and the creativity that these Small Business owners are implementing to s make sure their customers feel safe is really impressive because they know for their business to be successful, the customers must feel safe. I have been s very impressed wih what is going on out there in the Small Business community. Not having that, there are some businesses that can operate safely in the current guidelines thats where i think we need help with the ppe loans and that helps to be there now. It is not there now. In the southern now because of the lack of leadership by jean. She has followed Chuck Schumer. And nancy pelosi. She needs to leave to get this done. Same question then and the response from you. And partially my opponent has not been paying attention in washington or he would understand that the gridlock is there. Mitch mcconnell has refused to come to the table. But i am proud of the work that i did the ppe program and we have help 24000 Small Businesses in New Hampshire. They been able to keep over 200,000 people employed as a result of that program. And as you point out, there a number of y industries that stil need help. Particularly in the hospitality industry. Importantly the bill voted on today did not include the kind of help they need. We need tofo provide moree workr them. We need to extend Unemployment Benefits for people in alo way that allows them to make it through this difficult. And we need to help the travel and Tourism Industry New Hampshire. The ppe program hasew been great to have places like the diner in manchester and concord. But Everybody Needs more help to get through this pandemic. Next question. At the top of your ticket, joe biden has said that we will never get our economy back on track. Will never get our kids safely back to school. We will never have our lives back. And until we deal with this virus. First what you think that the former Vice President means by this do you think the u. S. Will needed another widespread econoc shut down and are you willing to risk inflicting financial pain on some of the country in order to potentially save the lives of others. Jeanne shaheen was on, that is what we need to plan at the top levels of this government. The trump ministration has not had a plan. The plan as i mentioned includes consistent guidance from the cdc for how the schools and businesses and other sectors of the economy affected should operate. It is why we need more testing and Contact Tracing so we can isolate those hotspots and we do not have to shut down. The rest of government and its unfortunate that my opponent has been defending this administration and handling of the pandemic from the very beginning. Even defendant donald trump 27 that we should ingest bleach to get through the coronavirus. The fact is it is correct, were not going to get through this pandemic could were not going to give their lives back to normal until we get ahead of the pandemic and that is why we need a plan and we all need to be working together but it needs to allow us to do what we have to with testing and Contact Tracing so that we can isolate those hotspots. Just like New Hampshires doing in so any areas. John distaso President Trump who has endorsed you and you have praise for his leadership, you tweeted when he was back at the white house after being hospitalized fortw covid19, dot be afraid of covid19, dont let it dominate your life. Governor has also endorsed you. Reactions to that. I am afraid of covid19 in the governor added that i completely disagree with that. I was here the president , when the governor. And are you afraid of covid19 is no. And why or why not. Corky messner john, before you answer that question, i would like my 30 seconds to responded to the attack that senator shaheen made on may. Shes misrepresented what i said. En senator you are entitled to your opinion but to make up facts about me. To make up facts about what i have said because it is untrue. Please stop it. Setne shaheen while you and i cant help it that you senate. Corky messner t, read the transcript and pay attention. This is not washington dc. I am an outsider. I speak the truth. Now, this pandemic is serious. Here is a tragedy for this pandemic. In 2009 in 2010, we had 81 and one pandemic. And Vice President joe biden chief of staff said last year, that is a terribly mismanaged at the time and in fact he said the only reason there were no more deaths is o pure luck that that virus was not deadly. And guess whatap happened since then. The government did nothing. Obama did nothing. Senator shaheen did nothing to prepare for this. And we had another morning with the ebola situation. And nothing awi was done by the obama administration. In the National Stockpile was empty for this pandemic. And we need to go back and hold those politicians accountable who dropped the ball. And founders in this position. The institutions of government were not ready for this pandemic. Mi john distaso are you afraid of covid19. Corky messner i am afraid of it is a virus and deadly we need to be careful. Police should not be frozen in fear. We must live our lives. We must not be frozen in fear. John distaso next question prayed. Jeanne shaheen hospitals in New Hampshire are likely to face record losses in 2020. And will continue to need federal assistance for the immediate future. Just yesterday, the healthcare said they were going to file for bankruptcy. When this pandemic is over, would you support continue directed specifically to prevent the closure of New Hampshires rural hospitals. How much would beup needed. Corky messner yes, i absolutely would support legislation to help our brought hospitals. I have spoken with some executives from hospitals in the north country. To assess their situation. This was about six or eight weeks ago and they were in. Good shape. We need to make sure these hospital say lofgren that is why targeted help is in portage. Ms. Target needs help and provided the help to those who are needed. Of the splinting approach that the democrats want to take and just spends trillions and trillions of dollars toem bail t california. Hampshire should not be bailingng out california for their mismanagement prior to covid19. We should not be bailing out new york because of their mismanagement prior to covid19. We need to target the hospitals and communities that need t it. And not go on a spending spree just because we can rationalize this with the covid19 situation. Senator shaheen same question to you. Corky messnerjeanne shaheen noe hospitals enough. I visited st. Joseph. And they have sadly went bankrupt this week. They not only need help as we are dealing with this pandemic in healthcare people need they need help because there also often the biggest employers in their community. As any people have been furloughed. My opponent backee in april said there is no urgent need for funding for hospitals. And now he wants to support a package that has been on the floor in the senate that would have no funding to help hospitals. No funny to help healthcare workers. In limited amount of money to help testing andnd Contact Tracing. That is not the help we need. We heard of the and from the head of the Federal Reserve leslie. He said we need a big package that helps all those people who are hurting get through this pandemic. John distaso do you want to respond. Corky messner short training under the original cares act, and in an upbeat 3. 2 trillion and there was assistance in that package for hospitals. In hospitals received the help they needed back then. And now the hospitals, some hospitals need more help not help us to be provided. But the u. S. Senate need to be nimble enough in a situation like this to provide help when needed and not get into these political negotiations that cause people to suffer even more than they need to. John distaso next question. In effect now that weve seen the response of the pandemic, theres been criticism that the u. S. Government was not adequately prepared. Whats the single most Important Initiative the members of the senate should be discussing and working on now. To prevent the t next one. Senator n shaheen. Jeanne shaheen we need to be looking at our Public Health system throughout this country. We do need to look at the cdc. I had a very good conversation with doctor redfield at the cdc where he talksd about wanting to really reform our Public Health system in this country when we get through this. Has my opponent has talked about. The criticized what happened in the previous administration. In fact is the problem that we have now is because of this administration. This is Donald Trumps america that we are and we have seen a Million People who have contacted the coronavirus. We have seen 2,120,000 deaths nationally and in New Hampshire almost 170 people died. It is a tragedy for those people and their families. In this president continues to take a blase approach in my opponent is going toa be with hm without wearing a mask. He was with him and his last super spreader event without wearing a mask. John distaso same question or esther messner. Corky messner yes a couple of things. The institutions of government, did not learn from the h1n1 pandemic in 2010 and anybody in the u. S. Senate at that time including senator shaheen needs to be voted out of office. Because the institutions of government were not prepared. We have much to learn from this pandemic. Any people in the u. S. Senate who will be open minded and actually get things done. So that we are prepared the next time this happens. It does not help the beast in the same people back over and over again who did not learn from the last pandemic. And she wont learn from this one. I dont know what super spreader she is talking about a may not wearing a mask. But i certainly was not at the white house. And again senator shaheen youre not entitled to your own facts. John distaso 30 seconds to respond. Jeanne shaheen it was the event for President Trump was in New Hampshire. The fact is what we need is a consistent approach to this pandemic. We dont need what the Trump Administration has been doing where he refuses to wear a mask. When he brings people together andpe he events in my opponent, fails to condemn with the president has done. This is the Trump Administrations plan. And what we have seen is a Million People contracted the disease. And 220,000 deaths. That is not going to get us ahead of the coronavirus. Corky messner there is no Contact Tracing to the events in august at the trump event. Lets look into the future a little rain we eventually get past this pandemic. What is the best way for the government to stimulate the economy and aid in his recovery from covid19, the one or two proposals that you would support Corky Messner i would like to go back first and point out that President Trump made a courageous decision at the end of january to stop travel from china. And the doctor has testified that that decision saved any lives. There are estimates the 2 million lives were saved. Tand when did the democrats do come they condemned him and call him a racist. And nancy pelosits went to chinatown and said things are safe. And i wish that senator shaheen in her last debate, she said she did not criticize the president over that decision. And so should would like d to se her say that was a good decision of President Trump made at the end of january because it saved a lot of lives according to dr. Fauci. Civil what i do specifically, i have the usa plan on my website. And it lays out various proposals that we can make to bring this economy back. Now to you senator shaheen, same question. Jeanne shaheen has i have said, we need is additional funding for testing and Contact Tracing. We need to have consistent guidance which we have not had the federal level. And we need to ensure that we pprovide additional help some people can get through this. And the fact is i was not critical of the president s travel been to china. But it was critical of his us in last debate was a 40000 people came in during the travel ban and they spread the coronavirus. Is not a very effective travel band. Lets we need is an Effective Response to this coronavirus and we have not seen it from this president. In my opponent continues to support this president s response to the coronavirus as i said. Hena even suggested that when te president said people should think about drinking bleach. His words were, that was just aspirational. Im sorry but that is not aspirational. That is just downright dangerous. John distaso you have three things to respond. Corky messner shes misrepresenting my words yet again. So senator shaheen. Are you suggesting that we should have kept out of the United States, this 40000 american citizens the needed travel back here. That would is that what you are suggesting. E that is unamerican. No you said 40000. [inaudible]. W see what he wanted to keep americans out of this country. What kind of senator is that. Tune not bring them back. John distaso sit and type 30 seconds for that senator shaheen predispute if that was the problem. There is no guarantee that they were not infected. One of the breezes that we saw the spread of the coronavirus was because they were not consistent measures put in place which is what we need in order to get ahead of this pandemic and that is what is happened in the travel band. That is what happened with the failure to ban people from coming from europe. And so we saw spread. That is one of the reasons we now have had 2,120,000 deaths in the United States. John distaso next question. Weve already discussed the governments economic response to covid19. To know the cares act alone cost trillions of dollars. Couple that with less revenue from the downturn. And from unemployment and the deficits the hole gets bigger. President trump and Congress Passed one half trillion dollar tax cut in 2017. These bills will all come due without refilling those tax cuts and raising others. So first, would you vote to repeal the trump tax cuts in second, what if any taxes beyond that are you willing to raise and please be specific to an income level for the type of corporations that they would affect. And c to i did not support the trump tax bill in 2017 because it gave 83 percent of the benefits to the biggest corporations. Jeanne shaheen i support the middleclass tax cuts and unfortunately that bill made this temporary in the 83 percent of the benefits to the biggest corporations permanent. I think weve got to look at closing loopholes person attacks cause. Does not make sense that amazon made 12 billion in 2018 and yet they paid zero in taxes. We need to end subsidies to the companies because they are operating and they do not need those subsidies. If we need to look t at things like our fuel t efficiencies and in our government says its one of the pieces of legislation i supported nonfossil supported ending the right outcome the s x writeoffs for pharmaceutical companies on their advertising because i think they should not be able to get double the writeoff for advertising and raising the prices. Joe biden wants to repeal the trump tax cuts. Corky messner and that means there will be tax increase for the middle class. Senator shaheen did notha answer the question. She supports joe bidens position to repeal the trump tax cuts and therefore, raise taxes on the middle class. Thats very important that we bring this economyan back vibrantly we bring it back vibrantly by keeping taxes low and government out of the way. And empower americans to work hard, is there ingenuity, get the businesses going, spark additional businesses and grow this economy vibrantly. And when we grow the economy vibrantly, our tax revenues will increase as the economy grows. Won raiseator, he taxes 30 seconds to respond. Jeanne shaheen i give you number of areas where i think we should look at how we could address our tax code in a way to produce revenue. I support tax cuts for middle income americans. My support tax cuts for Small Businesses. Thats my focus my attention from the time that i was governor. We need to encourage Small Businesses to grow. That is why i work with cory gardner republican from to repeal the Health Insurance tax. In the medical device tax of Companies Like this medical company could do the innovations that they need in order to eeproduce additional medical devices that help people with healthcare. I think there are number of areas that we can cut. That is what i have done prayed. John distaso all right. We hit the halfhour mark and were going to do a lighting rod to shake things up here. Starting in with you as a resident. But is less and best place to stop and enjoy of you. Corky messner i have been all over New Hampshire, every corner of the state and there is so any views. Wonderful views in New Hampshire than itar is hard for me to say which is the best. So i love it here. I will continue going around the state and campaigning. John distaso lighting quick. Senator shaheen. What is your favorite place to stop and enjoy the view. Jeanne shaheen right now there is no the Covered Bridge that is no longer in operation. That is a beautiful spot there over the creek. Especially the foliage is at peak. Cedric what is or who is one of your political heroes. Corky messnerjeanne shaheen in, wrecker, and was one of the first women in New Hampshire to run for governor. Before women could get the right to vote andnd she consistently fought to try to help women to get the right to vote. A new memorial to her. I think shes a great role model. John distaso mr. Messner, name one of your political heroes. Corky messner i would have say ronald reagan. Ronald reagan and hisisou polic, his peace through strength policys economic policies, and they resulted in the end of the cold t war. And that was an incredibly significant event. John distaso will you be voting absentee or inperson prey to. Corky messner i will be voting inou person. John distaso and senator shaheen you. Speech of an percent cedric puerto rico is holding another referendum in november. Fully vote in favor of thats in the u. S. Senate and they want to join the union is no. Jeanne shaheen i will speculate on that rated this the same conversation we had earlier. But to wait and see what puerto rico does and then what kind of legislation is brought to congress. He john distaso but if they should join the union to the not be admitted. Jeanne shaheen again we see when the circumstances are around that. Club requirements would be part of that will contributions they might make. In a number of things we need to look at with respect with whether they would become another state. Corky messner the democrat nonanswers on these issues like joe biden refusing to answer whether the democrats will pass thes course. If they take the presidency in the senate. The same kind of answer. The democrats want to pack the senate by bringing in puerto rico and the district of columbia. And theyre answering the question. This election is very important. John distaso lets wrap up the lightning round. Mr. Messner, when you by your New Hampshire maple syrup. Corky messner buy it at the wolfeboro food coop. John distaso where your favorite place missus jane. Jeanne shaheen at a farm. John distaso misconduct the policy questions. Summa lets move to the Supreme Court now. The senate vote to approve President Trumps Supreme Court nominee will likely take place in the next few days. Wsenator shaheen, even if on te debate begins in the full senate, youve already said you will vote against judge Amy Coney Barrett, this will make three consecutive nominees that you have voted against. All nominees of President Trump. You voted in favor of two judges by president obama. Have you decided you will never vote for another one put forth by republican president. This is because i witnessed is that you have for that person who would need be on the same side as you. Over key issues. Jeanne shaheen no john. Sadly what we have watched under the Trump Administration is appointing nominating ever more than just never morning extent gives on the issues that are important to the american people. We need to go back to looking at judges and have a more mainstream perspective. Because once the Trump Administration is doing is actually packing the court. What we have seen with Amy Coney Barrett last week during her heroes and had pairings she doesnt afford the Affordable Cares act which is so important to so any americans. The supremehi court will be takg at that issue next week of the week after the election. Wewe saw that she opposes womens reproductive rights. She even endorsed an ad from a group that would penalize in vitro fertilization. I think that is a view that is too extreme for the american people. John distaso mr. Messner, with the way the u. S. Senate is working on the partisan divide. Voters will likely assume you would enter the senate and vote yes to a truck now any in this and no to invited nominate why would they be wrong to think that for you such a strong support of the president would break with the party. Corky messner first of all john i would like to say, unlike Amy Coney Barrett, i have notes that i have been taking. I said in the previous debate that i thought mayor garland it should have got a hearing in the senate and the vote in the senate. I would evaluate judges on their temperament. Their prudence parted their accomplishments, and i will look at each judge objectively. I think it is a huge mistake for u. S. Senators to try to. What kind of decisions Supreme Court justice would make in the future. I think these no monies to be zialuated on their abilities. Amy Coney Barrett is an amazing choice. Shes brilliant, she has accomplished organicic shes a great role model for women and young girls. It i think it is a mistake. If you listen to the hearings, she will listen to what you talked about, the importance of president and the Supreme Court. Dont assume that she will overturn things. John distaso re senator shaheen, its overturned by the Supreme Court in the issue of abortion is returned to t the state. How would you to the u. S. Senate. Jeanne shaheen then we need to look at National Legislation that would essentially put into law went is in the decision. Unfortunately, my opponent is not willing to let women make their own choices on reproductive rights. He supports Amy Coney Barrett extreme positions on this issue. In fact he has an extreme position on reproductive rights. He would oppose abortion even in cases of rape and incest. He said that he would jell the abortions. Perform i think that is the mainstream values of people in New Hampshire. Unfortunately my opponent is not from New Hampshire. He does not know me. He does not know my record. He does not know the state in the way that we need to pray to meeting someone who can represent the views of the people in New Hampshire who are going to work with people who in both sides of the aisle to make a difference for the state. Thats what i have done my years in the senate. John distaso 30 secondsfe to respond mr. Messner. Corky messner senator shaheen had the opportunity to vote to codify in the borderline act. And she voted no. The borderline act said if a baby survives an abortion the baby is entitled to the same medical standard of care is anybody. She voted no. She is for the other extreme. There was an opportunity. [inaudible]. [inaudible]. [inaudible]. Corky messner that was consistent and you had an opportunity to vote in a way. [inaudible]. Jeanne shaheen oe my opponent is wrong on that. John distaso mr. Messner please finish her point. Just make a point place. Corky messner so the one alive act, senator shaheen voted no. Its designed to prevent passive infanticide. And that is not permitted. Jeanne shaheen the legislation that he is talking about when have put into law what is alreadyy legal and that is intended side but it wouldve gone beyond that. E wouldve jailed drugs or the doctors who would perform abortions. And again, this will my opponent supports. That is outside of the mainstream of hampshire values. Theres a difference between my opponent inmate. In this government should make decisions about what women do. I think women in consultation with the doctors and their families should make decisions about their own Reproductive Health read thats it. Big difference between my opponent to me. John distaso moving on to other questions. Foreignpolicy question from at student estate comes college. With the covid19 pandemic, people are questioning abortion. We all know the virus came from china china has recently be counted they successfully control the virus although, mr. Course suggest that china is lying. As the facts are not lining up. Would you consider covid19 National Security threat created by china andyo if so how would u improve our National Security and tiny9 threats. Corky messner i think so much of the Chinese Communist party, does now is a threat to our National Security rated and we need to hold them accountable for that covid19 crisis. During the obama years, the latter jobs to be exported to china. They allowed the chinese to steal our intellectual property. We need to know recognize the Chinese Communist partys intent on dominating the world economically, and militarily. And it is m time that we have people in the u. S. Senate that will remember that and hold the Chinese Communist Party Accountable for the covid19 crisis. John distaso senator shaheen note to you. Jeanne shaheen we do need to hold china accountable for covid19. They clearly do not provide Accurate Information about what was going on there. I dont think theyre still providing Accurate Information about what is happening with covid19. It will need to do is to put back in place a National Security team at the Trump Administration disassembled. That can look for those kinds of threats when there happening around the world. And i think the china such as a threat with respect to covid19 but its a longterm threat both economically and militarily. Thats why to sign on to legislation that would address china threats that would support additional diplomatic and economic aid to counter what china is doing. My opponent keeps talking about the threat from china. It he advertises his law firm represented companies in china. Actually represented chinese backed companies against an American Manufacturing firm. I dont think we should be doing dance. This is the kind of policy towards chinana needed. John distaso 30 seconds to respond. Corky messner one think that senator shaheen should be a critical of joe biden and joe biden and his under biden. And two, i wish you would look at her own husband law firms advertisements. An advertising to represent sexual predators and bragging about getting pedophiles off the hook in and predators in the law firm to represent them. My to remind you that bill shaheen is a politician, is on the Democratic National committee. Jeanne shaheen my husband, my opponent might like to be running he has my husband buddies up. Hes running against me. Im happy to take responsibility for my record and what i have worked on in the senate remind opponent to take this possibility what he has done with his law firm and representing china. He says he would not have done it if he had been running for office. Well if its wrong when youre running for office, that is wrong before you starting to run for office. So this should be about what you have done, when my opponent has done and what i have done. Novel my my husband has done. John distaso is nevada. Just last month u. S. Deployed radar increase the frequency of the u. S. Fighter patrols and deployed fighting vehicles to all forces in Eastern Syria and the means or involvement in the country in addition to dozens of troops in iraq and afghanistan. Senator shaheen, the u. S. Now is in fighting forces in these three countries in one way or another for about 20 years. In this way, are you designed to have a permanent presence there. Jeanne shaheen i disagreed with both president obama and President Trump on handling of syria. I think we should not have withdrawn the troops from northeast syria. That the trump decided to do because now he is the troops back intoo syria. It wouldve been better off, it would cost less money for us to maintain this troops were there who are providing some stability in northeast syria and also providing some balance to what russia was doing and what iran has been doing and what is sought is doing in syria. I think what we need to do is work with the International Community to go back to both iran and russia for the influence that they are doing in the middle d east. What our policy is not clear at this point because the president has flipflopped on what were going to be doing there. Thank you and mr. Messner, youve been critical of the that region. Ops in considering the difficult nature of law. When withdrawing at this point be dangerous to our National Security rated. Corky messner personal, think President Trump on to be for bringing peace to the middle east. I think secondly, senator shaheen has been in the senate for 12 years during this war. And when President Trump repositioned those soldiers, on the Syrian Border with turkey, she made a comment to mr. Mitchell, we can keep them there in a minor cost. Senator shaheen said that losing them. Jeanne shaheen you taking my contacts. Corky messner only the soldiers are getting killed is okay. Let me tell you, i think i personally. Because i have two sons that are serving. One of west point andrv when it just graduated from west point. And we needed to take care of our fighting soldiers. The moms and dads other, you must use senator who thinks losing a few soldiers is okay to keep people somewhere. John distaso senator, 30 seconds to respond. Jeanne shaheen that is absolutely wrong. I would never say losing soldiers was okay in fact, i became clear the russia spinning bounties on american troops in afghanistan, i spoke out tonight the president to Say Something to vladimir putin. My opponent did nothing on that. He did not call out the president. He did not say talk to vladimir putin. That is unacceptable. He is just wrong and i would never say that losing our troops was acceptable. He knows it. John distaso 15 seconds to respond. Corky messner if you lookon at that and you see that you see that we have only lost a few soldiers. We withdraw from the race. Jeanne shaheen what i said was the cost of keeping troops there in terms of dollars come about 200 million was something that was worth the expense. Corky messner you are lying. Weve only lost a few soldiers. Thank goodness. That is what you said. If thats the tape says will you withdrawal. John distasojeanne shaheen my s not accurate. And thats the problem. He does know me. He does know my record and he does not know New Hampshire. John distaso if disengaging from syrian some ways disrespectful or dishonoring the memory james foley. Corky messner now, i dont think so. I think we need to move forward in a way that protects our allies in the middle east. Israel is so important. There are closest ally. We need to make sure they are secured. Jordan is an ally. We need to be sure they are secure. It is time that we stop these endless wars. And it is time we focus on our friends it will help us. It is time that we bring the troops home. We cannot go on like this forever. And it is tragic what happened to james foley. I might say that President Trump defeated the isis and he has held terrorists accountable. And he killed solomonic and al benedetti. And this will good things are needed rid the world of those terrorists. John distaso we know what happened to mr. Foley. The how do you justify region that just doesnt seem to want us there. Jeanne shaheen afghanistan. We know why we are there. Because we want to ensure the terrace no longer have a foothold there to attack the United States. Thats also the reason we went into syria and iraq so that we can explore the terrace cant attack the United States. We need to continue to work on that. We have thousand is no vices detainees around the world we need to ensure as i see in front vices detainees go back to the countries that they came from. Because there is a hotbed there on the border between iraq and syria. Im proud of the works that i did with the Foley Foundation in the foley familyly to bring back to the United States the beatles to our accused of being responsible for the murder of james foley and three other americans. I worked with the National Security advisor obrien with our military to ensure they can come back. To stand trial in civilian courts and we can hold them accountable show the rest of the terrace the world they should not mess with the United States john distaso next question. Thank you. Mr. Messner, who said that one of the first bills you would support in the senate is more than protects people with preexisting conditions are being denied healthh insurance. The Affordable Cares activists dismantled. Will with the bill look like write it in. And would there be a cap on the amount and Insurance Companies can charge them. Would there be a list of conditions. Corky messner i would include several things in the bill. One is that nobody should ever be denied Health Insurance because of a preexisting condition. Nobody. We have time here to deal with this. The Supreme Court is hearing the oral arguments for the Affordable Care sacked on november 10th. You have heard talk during the amy koning barrettel hearings. I do not believe they will w overturn the entire lot. But we need to have legislation in case they do, protecting people. We need to allow Insurance Companies too sell insurance across state lines. Senator shaheen when she was governor, the Health Insurance companies New Hampshire went from 26 to three because of the legislation she passed. Retreat resulted in very high nealthcare costs. Center commenting thousand 17 youre in favor of the medicare for all bills sponsored by cerneyy sanders. In 2019 use their pastor ways er reach universal coverage a building the progress of the portable correct. Two of daca is gone, what would be your alternative . Would that be medicare for all . No, i think are faster ways to cover people to put in a whole new system. I think private insurance has worked. It is working now because of the Affordable Care act that says to the Insurance Companies you cannot deny people coverage of preexisting conditions. If my opponent listen to some listen to some of the people with preexisting conditions that are first debate, he denied that we had hundreds of thousands of people in New Hampshire with preexisting conditions. But you listen to somebody like dan who had cancer and a heart condition who before the Affordable Care act could not get Health Insurance. Or Chelsea Lewis whose daughter has. [inaudible] she would have retreat lifetime cap along time ago under Health Insurance before the Affordable Care act. That is the system that my opponent once us to go back to pray center feinstein we want you to one that last question before closing statements. Tells about one specific person you talk with during your campaign who truly talked with. Affect just the other day i was on the woman drove the whole way from claremont to portsmouth too see me. And she said to me, i wanted to come meet you. And i wanted to let you know im prayer for you and that claremont is praying for you prayed that was buried touching to me. Senator shaheen name one person is touchy during this Campaign Season pray a woman, i do not want to give her name preaching handed me a note after a town hall up there. I am my staff and literally saved her life because she needed healthcare and could not get it. Im cannot put her touch for that healthcare. The Affordable Care act is so important so many people in New Hampshire, we cannot let that get return prayed that is what my opponent would support recently given both candidate one minute each for a closing statement. Senator shaheen you goto first. Well thank you for hosting u us. I think what listeners have heard is two very different visions of what a United States senator should support from New Hampshire. I believe we need to make sure everyone has access to affordable healthcare. We also need to lower Prescription Drug costs, that is what ive been working on and will continue to work on. We need to continue that women have access to reproductive rights. We need to ensure in infrastructure and things like the downtown were i worked with steve dupree and mayor in concord to make sure they could get a bill grant to rebuild that downtown. Because that is what are Small Businesses need in order to be successful. My opponent has a very different vision of all those issues. I hope people will look at my record decide they can support me on november 3 i ask for your vote thank you pacific thank you and now final statement from you. I grew up in a bluecollar family we did not have much prayed i went to west point i served on the veteran. I started a successful business with some hard work and luck i grew that business. It is time we get someone in the u. S. Senate who knows how to get things done. Who will serve only you, and not be loyal to progressives in washington d. C. I am running because jean shaheen has been there too long. Her time is up. She is a career politician, she does not care about you. She does what Chuck Schumer, nancy pelosi and aoc tells her to do. That is what she does. It is time she go away. That her career is done, she can go retire in maine. Its time to get new blood in thee u. S. Senate for granite stators i will do the harder right instead of the easier wrong. Please vote for me, corky for senate. Com prayed my phone number is 603515542, give me a call. Thank you mr. Mesmer and senator shaheen of washington all get home you for your debate.
