Governor hogan was sworn in as a 62nd governor of the state of maryland and on january 31st 2015. In 2018, he ever nominat he wasa different term. He became only the second republican governor the reelected in the 242 u. S. History of the state. During the conversation, he discusses his ran new book. Entitled still standing. And talks of politics the divide america. Governor submitted the book on fairbury first just be for coronavirus pandemic in the United States. And then publication for two months. He added five chapters. The economic crisis, and dealing with the white house. We now invite you to an with our virtual program. With governor larry hogan in the foundation institute. Governor hogan, it is absolutely great to have you this afternoon. This will turn out to be your best book because it was fantastics story. Gov. Larry hogan thank you very much in such an honor to be with you today. Thank you for saying that. It it will probably be my best in my worst. My only one. With thank you so much. Im glad you enjoyed it. I hope other people will as well. When i read their first couple of chapters, the reader is reminded of the fact that shes coming from a political family and why your father, larry hogan in congress in the 70s ran for the senate, and i think was in had another major job in maryland. You just come from a pedigree in maryland that was truly important for your background. Gov. Larry hogan yes and thank you for mentioning my dad. Im very proud of him. He served in congress back in the 70s and gave up a seat in congress to run for governor but i learned a lot about my Public Service and integrity for my dad. I spent most of my career in the private sector. Certainly probably had something to do with my early interest in politics. In the reason why i took an interest in getting involved. Host we are dad is famous for homing at the season. As you know thats one incredible moment of fame. He is the first republican member of the house, the first republican i think in the House Judiciary Committee to support the impeachment of president nixon. It. Gov. Larry hogan i was in high school at the time. My dad was sitting on that house to Judiciary Committee. He was a strong supporter president nixon better get a chance to meet the president and we campaigned together. I think my dad was fond of nixon thought a did a good job in foreign policy. With respect to china. He was one of the folks on the dude Judiciary Committee fighting to make sure the process was fair and pushing back when he thought the democrats were being too partisan. Fun to make sure the president could present his own witnesses and present evidence. He was a former fbi agent and a lawyer who after seeing all of the evidence, it pains him but he really believed that the president had commended been peaceful offenses. He was the first on the Republican Committee just come out its a separated at the time republicans were often mad at him. Friends in congress and folks and voters in the district. But some think that he is probably most remembered for. The thing i most probably because he had the courage to stand up and put aside his own political career and put aside Party Loyalty and personal affection to do what he felt was right for the country. John a courageous act. Speaking of your dad. Had a smile about it. In a run for the senate in 1982. Two years into the reagan presidency. And in research, i found we had a lot of scripts here that president reagan used to support members and senators running during their campaigns during his white house year. As a great script and we have a person speaking about your dad. President reagan said for an advertisement for them. We dont need rubberstamps in the senate. What we need are hardworking people of ability and integrity like larry hogan who are willing to put the hard work to building the american future. That you and i believe in so deeply. It. Gov. Larry hogan i think the first time that i heard that. Dont remember from back then and thats incredible. Thank you for digging that up and sharing it with me. John i will send you a copy of it governor. A lot of people admire Ronald Reagan. You are truly an authentic reagan republican. Thats be the case because you gods mystery to talk about with respect of the president. Gov. Larry hogan my dad first got involved in politics in the late 60s and i became kind of interested. I was involved in teenager and college republicans. But when i was in college, and was in 1976, find out whos in the house with president gerald ford who i get a chance to meet in his family, my dad was tearing campaign for reelection. When dad had a big garden for becoming Vice President and president. Was a great man and later. But i was so enamored with reagan but i and 76, i was at the convention as an alternate delegate. I was just a young kid. And the member of the delegation and maybe the youngest person on the floor but the convention. But i was working around with my reagan sign and marine happy site thought he was such, is positive vision for the future the way it spoke just risch made away and frankly, gerald ford didnt. And my dad got so angry with me. Because hes a friend of fords and tearing campaign. In the essay woody you doing out there. And i said but i truly like him. I was a true believer and 76 when he was unsuccessful. I was a chairman of you for reagan. And it worked as a delegate 1980 and in 1984. Nobody had more of an impact on me in a base philosophy was more interested in than Ronald Reagan. I was comingofage. I was right out of college. When he became president , i served on the inaugural committee. He was the guy that i looked up for two and accorded all of the time and i think about, this the kind of leader that i aspire to be. John this is your first book i believe. Summa finished the first book look back on it and moment as exhilaration and some down the process. When he fitted. Gov. Larry hogan i actually enjoyed it. Its a look at our i guess bring my first well i wanted 2014 of governor of maryland which was nearly an impossible thing to do. When the highest percentage of democratic voters in america. I had very little money. No one expected us to win. I was a second to be elected in 50 years will be pulled off, they said you should write a book about how you did that. I said i cant write a book and i didnt really accomplish anything. After 90 days of being governor and his riots in baltimore where we got credited of doing a good job of handling. They should enter they said you should write about that experience in the battle the lifethreatening cancer after five months and prayed and you have to talk about this and then one, a huge reelection and became the second governor in 242 years of republican of maryland to be reelected they said you have to write about this so eventually got around to it. So february 1st rugby for this coronavirus crisis, took a long time as you know to write a book but i enjoyed the process and i hope people will enjoy reading it. As the publisher to put on hold. The supposed to be out actually two months earlier. They can only delay it until the end of july. They asked me to add and make it more current some of the things that were going on today with my leadership of the National Governors association and what was going on with fighting the Global Pandemic in the economic crisis that we are doing whats i think it makes her more interesting book. It is difficult to get this done and we had planned a big tour around the country never doing it all virtually. Because were still dealing with the crisis. And because it is impossible to have in events these days. But thank you for giving us this opportunity with you for our first event. John and we are happy to. Governor, first congratulations on winning a tough fight on cancer. Unfortunately ive had the same experience diagnosed with stage three of a different kind of cancer. Youve just made magnificent accomplishment, you been able to fight just a few months in a first term is marylands governor. How is it even possible for you to have such insight and you wouldnt the state and same time. Gov. Larry hogan will god bless you and im glad you made it successfully through you your battle. A tape, changed me as a person. Made me realize the things that are incredibly fortunate and i get to meet evil tougher battles in my own. I got to meet families and see what they go through. It is going to beat something ill be involved in forever. Try to fight until we find cures for these diseases. Id only been governor for five months. We adjust but one this big huge overwhelming upset victory. The biggest one of the country. And then i had my first legislative session after putting together an entire government. In an overwhelmingly democratic monopoly state. And we cut taxes the for the first time probably balanced budget. We got the 5. 1 billion deficit all of the 90 days and then battle the riots. And 60 days later i got hit with this newsprint i was on my first trade mission to asia. I was not feeling really that well. I had aches and pains and was a little tired. I didnt think of something serious and i went to the doctor and then he ended up telling my had advanced and aggressive cancer all over my body. For my groin and it ended up being almost 18 months total battle 24 hour a day chemotherapy. I was dealing with all of that wellbeing governor. Brandnew governor in a very tough state a lot of things going on. An talk about this experience of a book. I got to meet so any people. My first worry was how i tell my family. It is fathers day weekend that i got this diagnosis. My first thought is that it got to my and my daughters. My dad was 80 at the time. He was coming over for fathers day dinner at the Governors Mansion he actually took it harder than anybody. It does matter how old you get. Im still his little boy that he couldnt keep out of trouble. So he cried the whole time. Then come out and had to announce it to the full state of maryland. Try to be very transparent and share with me. They just had 6 Million People that they put their trust in me. And i work from the hospital bed continuing to try to run the state. And i came out of it thank god stronger than ever. John aside from finding the best doctors you can, advice governor. For people going through a similar experience as you did. Is there one really important piece of advice that you might give. Gov. Larry hogan im a big believer in the power of prayer and i had an awful lot of people praying for me. I think having a positive attitude is the mental part of this. Beside the physical ravages of these diseases, trying to stay positive and focus on healthy. Have a support network, not just your family but i was lucky enough to have thousands of people across the state to work only for me. Not everybody has that. And have an incredible and try to get the best medical care as you can and listen to your doctors. I was lucky because maryland, we have amazing medical facilities. And at great doctors and nurses who were taking care of me. I think people need to support network in the gotta stay positive. They will get through it. John lets talk about another terrible illness for a few minutes. In a covered this some of the final chapters in your book and obviously that is the coronavirus. Cut here at the reagan library, in california, we are still facing tremendous crisis and a number of cases continue to grow in the desk row etc. But you all seem to of gotten a good or a better handle on it in maryland. In a know its been one heck of a struggle. How have you been able to do that. Gov. Larry hogan well i dont want to get too overconfident because we do have a. Good handle on the numbers right now. But were not being complacent. This virus is by no means behind us. And i believe that for this to continue to get worse we have that potential going into the fall. And we are seeing alarming spikes and increases across the country rated the virus does not recognize state orders. Some people are taking different actions and its affected for the hard and how successful they been in with herbs. But now are metrics that we are following are still trending. Good. Number of cases where weve incd testing dramatically. But we look at positivity rates. We look at hospitalizations. How any people are filling the hospital beds in icu beds. All of which are trending down. We have got to stay vigilant and stay on top of this. We saw mistakes that were relatively in good shape it they are out of control operator got to listen to the advice of the Public Health professionals epidemiologist. In the smart scientists. Weve got to wear masks and social distance and do all of those kinds of things. We have successfully and safely reopen in about 98 percent of our economy. If we preach the peak of the virus about 90 days ago. And we have downward trending numbers but we watch it every single day and if we have to take action to stop it, we are going to not hesitate to make those decisions. When you make very difficult decisions. When difficult times back in the early part of this. As every state in the nation. I never imagined being in this kind of a position of making the kinds of decisions that we had to. But almost every day, we are making decisions that had to be made to keep people safe. John sure. And this is not inexpensive heat meaning i am sure that this virus in all 50 states his cause havoc in the states financial system. I was a going in maryland. Gov. Larry hogan estate Financial Systems are really being impacted but its really impacting the economy on most about what it is doing to all of the Small Businesses out there the unemployment that is skyrocketed. The loss of revenue. There is all of those additional people that we gotta help but because of that, because people are not working and because businesses are suffering and because people are out spending money because they do not feel safe. Revenues and states are down. In any states the revenues are projected to be down as much 825 30 percent greater were not as bad as some of those days but really going to be impacted. To meet very tough fiscal decisions in the state about how we provide more services to more people who are really in need with a lot less revenue. It is going to be tougher governors across america. John the Sticking Point between the white house and the states governor on whether there will be any federal assistance to help manage the impact that the state level. Gov. Larry hogan i dont know people is Sticking Point but we have a differences of opinion sometimes between the governors in the white house. I share that the National Governors association and i work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle. And have throughout the entire pandemic. And i think weve had 41 or 42 calls with all of the nations governors. Any of them with the president and or Vice President in that cabinet. The communication with the governors and it has been good. The governors have been really good about sharing best practices about what is going on in your state. How have you dealt with this. How is this working. The federal government has stepped up with respect to the cares act in some funding out there. Thats what we needed to help, people who are unemployed and help Small Businesses and help us with certain issues. But were also frustrated that sometimes we are not getting all of the assistance and help that we need. I think we couldve had a National TestingStrategy Early on in this process. It wouldve been helpful. It was like a 50 state scramble with everybody kind of making things up on their own. I dont want to monday morning quarterback because were still in the quote and transmittal of this is going to take a federal state and local government all working together. To continue to fight this battle. But the good news is we are all communicating and trying to work through these differences of opinion. John i know governor, the media often times tends to overplay if there is any disputes between the governors and the president t aspirated when we feel they are falling short or there is real needs of the state has, not been afraid to stand up and tell them had a fairly directly. That is my job as chairman of the governors. John you mentioned National Testing strategy. If they were one single element about the administration. The actions during all of this. Must when we say boy we shouldve thought that through better. That wouldve been of most help for the governors in the state. Gov. Larry hogan i think about this in my book about the early stages of this. Were really writing about this back in march and april timeframe and in early may. In the early stages, had we gotten more aggressive. There were some really smart people in the administration who were aware of what was happening giving advice to the white house. But i think a little bit slow on developing this and saying lets leave that up to the states. I appreciate the states flexibility with there were certain things and only the federal government had the ability to do. I think a massive Testing Program early couldvestop the r stage before we had about a hundred and 40000 deaths in this thing spiraling out of control. I think the messaging while we had great meetings with the task force with the Vice President and all these leaders. Sometimes the president communication was different will you are caring so i think that messaging was one of the big problems that we had. We talked about reagan was such a great communicator. And i think the communication skills fell short on this coronavirus with president. John understood. Fairpoint. Schools. Now here in california, the reagan library. Most of the states, we got the unfortunate news just last week from our governor that from the Public Schools are going to need to operate online rather than in person. Had you made a decision in the state of maryland on the schools will operate. Because of sure theres a lot of parents concerned about that. Gov. Larry hogan everybody is concerned about how and i think everyone would like to see her kids get back into schools as quickly as we can i think its really important to actually have kids back in the classrooms. But we also need to make sure that we go about it in a way that is safe for the kids and for the teachers. When i made the final decisions yet. The way it works in our state its we have an independence in state board of education put out a plan, a framework of plan about a month ago. There now getting input from each of our jurisdiction to put a drop together. I think we will see flexibility in the areas that are impacted and affected differently were some people may be doing more online learning. Maybe type of a highbred another schools that are actually able to open up. Were going to follow the cdc guidance which has been excellent. And listen to Public Health professionals and just try to do everything we can to get kids learning again in a safe way. An error on the side of getting the kids learning again. In the classrooms to do it safely rat rated. John you have several chapters in your book governor, when you talked about one of the most difficult situations youve had to face with the parable unfortunate circumstances with freddie gray in the police and all that. Dont need to tell you. Were seeing similar situations. In baltimore occurring in cities throughout the United States today. As a result of the tragic killing of george floyd. What lessons did you learn in tackling the situation. And i want to be the money quarterback what would there be advice that you giving other backs even this and facing this situation in their own states. Gov. Larry hogan i think there are a lot of parallels. As i mentioned, finish most of this book on february 1st and then put it on hold. Had no idea at the time the brothers five chapters about the riots in baltimore, how much of a parallel there would be. But admin governor just 89 days when the worst violence and 47 years broke out in our largest city of baltimore. And in just the first few hours, this was after the death of freddie gray the very beginnings of the black lives movement and just after ferguson. But in the first few hours, violence and destruction broke out in baltimore we had 400 businesses burned and looted and destroyed. In hundred 27 police and firefighters were injured and hospitalized for it in citys police force was overwhelmed and the citizens of baltimore were crying out for somebody to come in and keep them safe. And i ended up within a matter of hours calling a state of an emergency intending and more than a thousand of Police Officers and 4000 members of the national guard. To try to bring peace and calm to the citizens of baltimore. We did it in a way that we love the peaceful protest to take place for a solid week and there were a lot of people expressing legitimate frustrations. We did not want to aggressively move against those protesters. To further inflame the situation. We stopped and we did not allow any more violence or destruction after that first night. We did it very successfully. I think we got praise across the country for that. The people of baltimore appreciated it. That was important in the philippines were going to be okay. And we lowered the temperature and i think that is part of the problem today. There are two things going on. One, cities are not handling the kind of violence and destruction. Theyre allowing it to take place. And his two week of a response. And then in some cases we have say in portland were spent going on for months of destruction and then theres this federal response and complains about being too oppressive and is further inflaming. It socially taught a course about how to handle a crisis like this. I quote Ronald Reagan and that i learned from him, peace through strength. I think in the situation you gotta have enough manpower to keep them safe. Stop the violence and the destruction but not go in and a heavyhanded tactic going to make the situation worse. And we did that successfully in 2015. An onsite this time, as we thought some peaceful protesting across america. We also saw really bad situations and any of our major cities. In baltimore, we do not have this problems this time. Is very proud of the citizens of the police force. In a negative result that would happen in 2015. Speedo im glad i asked the question. And i will follow up. About advice. I presume you want to give the same advice to the bears. The hesitancy. To this of letting people blow up steam. It causes an enormous problem. Whether for the mayor the themselves of the governors of the states. It just seems completely irrational to allow this kind of violence to occur rather than to get try to top of it. Gov. Larry hogan high absolutely agree. And talk about this in the book. Its exactly what happened in the early hours of the situation in baltimore in 2015 where the mayor then mayor of baltimore, is offering the police to stand down. To not respond. She actually went on television said she was going to give these protesters the room to destroy. She was not going to step in. When i couldnt believe. It never seen a response like that to let them continue to destroy the city. I certainly was not going in the room to destroy. We would bring in 5000 people to stop them from destroying the city and thats exactly what happened. John well done targeted by sunnybrook. Difficult situations between yourself and the mayor. Gov. Larry hogan people will see the inside view of what it was like to go through that. Maybe some of these mayors and governors that are dealing with it now can read those few chapters maybe that might find it helpful. John another important issue. I know its important in virginia as well. I grew up near Chesapeake Bay. Are things going governor for the bay. And maintaining the kind of attitude and is keeping it clean virus. Has a going. Gov. Larry hogan address that. Sometimes people automatically assume. Here that the republicans are sometimes handed the stag of you dont care about the environment and democrats are automatically going to be better about the environment. I know my president and previous governor said he was doing good thanks for the Chesapeake Bay but weve actually been able to invest more in protecting the bay and to preserve the open space land to keep runoff for going on. We did it in a more effective way. The health of the Chesapeake Bay is its now cleaner than its been in recorded history. After almost six years of really solid effort on it. Cannot be prouder of the team weve had in the state of maryland. Weve been working on these clean water issues. Chesapeake bay is national treasure. It is so important to the region but really the country. As a model for how you can go about cleaning up the environment without killing business in the meantime. John as part of the heart of maryland Economic Business activity. The bay is not cleaning going well. It would be hard for people to make a living. Gov. Larry hogan and we have some great crabs and that they as you know. Customer into maryland as well. John card the crabs doing this year. Gov. Larry hogan im sample them personally. Lets talk about another issue for maryland that you cover in the book. Thats been a plague in all 50 states. It is the ovoid crisis. Tell me how difficult has that battle been in maryland. When you sit in the fight. Gov. Larry hogan is a very difficult battle and when we have been wrestling with for a while. When i was running for governor in 2014, it was not something that most people work focused on. And i can tell you that i was traveling around. Our state is. Diverse. We have a very rural areas. Some. Urban areas, we were like an american mentor. We have a little bit of everything. Everywhere i traveled with us today would going to these areas and sit down with areas leaders and i would say what is the number one problem facing your community here. Every single instance they said, opioids. And i was shocked. This not just in the city of baltimore. It was in wealthy rich government counties like montgomery county. It was in very rural agriculture communities. A small towns i was shocked. Now were very aware of it. So focused on this and as soon as i was elected i put someone in charge of task force focused on opioid addiction we came up with a number of passive piece of legislation to enact all of this. It and we attractively every direction. Because its tearing apart families and communities from one end of the country to the other. Its killing people and costing us live is an money and focus. It is just ravaging the country. Weve gone after it with everything with god. We made some stride and weep stopped the explosive growth. But it is a tough one to get a handle on it. Like this coronavirus. He makes one part of it and another one pops up. Its a little bit like wacko. Some growing at the rate where it used to be we havent stepped out, this fentanyl is a very dangerous drug. But god part of it under control this fentanyl came in from china which is more deadly. John absolutely. Mga. Its attribute governor that you were chosen to be the head of the national association. Tell me, how has that job in for you. But it is helpful to you as the state of maryland governor. Get a good Cross Section of issues occurring in other states. Maybe take best practices or ideas from them. Tell me about your challenges. Gov. Larry hogan when i first was elected, i went to an occult baby Governor School but its really called the seminar for new governors. I met some governors from across the country and i was really impressed right away at the National Governors association about how well people come along. A been very involved in this organization after almost six years. It ive been on the executive committee. It was very honored at the my colleagues unanimously chose me to lead them. It and i in my position last july. You get it package Tears Initiative and i started in initiatives and rebuilding americas infrastructure. And we are doing this all around the country. We are making great progress. But then this coronavirus broke out which made i think the Governors Association even more important and more relevant than ever. We have 40 some video conferences about the governors. That hasnt happened the past 20 or 30 years combined. It and weve done it in a few months. The cooperation and the collaboration between the governors has been amazing frankly. And it couldnt be frankly more proud of all of the governors. On both sides of the aisle for the way they have stepped up in the crisis. In the National Governors association, people probably didnt even know existed. In some cases has not been that relevant. Think it is taken on a whole new relevancy. Its been a lot of work and its taken a lot of time and effort but i think it is been for that. I think we really have led during this crisis. Theres an opportunity during a time when think america interstates really needed somebody to step up. For the governors to step up. I was happy to be able to lead the governors during this time. John what about the dynamic of the environment. The National Governors association with your experience. Its probably one of the most productive bipartisan groups in america its actually getting something done. Theres some way that we can borrow or steal from that model. It. Gov. Larry hogan i sure would like to get them folks in washington and congress to follow that model for innotech about this in the i think most people in america are somewhat frustrated with the dysfunction. For nobody can get anything done and nobody gets along. Such personal battle back and forth. It was not always this bad. But the governors are different and unique. Governor reagan and his leadership and a lot of governors have been successful in becoming president. But the governors are the sort of ceos. Have to govern their states every single day. The running a government. There like president s of a smaller operation. But its in the executive branch. When not in direct competition. In progress youre finding every data kemeny and youre arguing with the state legislature. And youre trying to defeat this person or that person. The governors, not in competition with my fellow governors. We sit down and we say, how are you dealing with this problem. Its almost as if we have 50 ceos of these companies and asking what can we do a better job of providing and building our own businesses. We have to get up everyday and make sure states are functioning provide the services. And for the most part, will we will disagree but were not in competition were not out there wearing blue jerseys and red jerseys every day. John okay. So this was my way of getting you to start the conversation about the presidency. Unnecessarily the president s of the smaller states but the United States. But a note last year you perhaps in your experience, you can look at the whole nation and traveled to new hampshire. You have thought about maybe a little and run for you someday. Is that right. It. Gov. Larry hogan s not exactly right. I didnt really think about it too much or too hard with her a lot of people. After i was reelected in the worst possible year in a deep blue state with a blue wave. When we lost to congress. We lost any sitting governors. And we lost legislative bodies across the country. I was overwhelmingly elected. People started saying hey, how do you do that. How do you appeal to reagans theory of a bigger tent. It in reagan democrats. I was able to get democrats and independents to swing over and boat and we have done well with suburban women and minorities. People started to say, would you consider and how about this. It i knew there was a lot of talk about that but never put together any real effort to move in that direction. And now that i put this book out, theres been a lot of speculation. Mustering the book because concerned about 2024. I think is far too early to talk about that. I got a great job is governor maryland. Until january 2023. In the middle of economic crisis. The Global Pandemic. And im going to try to stay focused on that. But if you want to be a part of the future discussion about where we go as the republican party. A been active in the party my whole life. And since i got so excited about Ronald Reagan especially. Im concerned about the fact they were not listening to that advice that reagan gave. We dont have the hopeful positive message and vision that is attracting more people and growing that bigger tent. And i want to be at least a part of that discussion. Im not as concerned. I dont care so much about what my future is in the republican party. But it really concerned about having a future for the republican party. Because us winning elections and being able to win over and get things done in the continuation of the party in the twoparty system. That is critical. But with god and when elections in order to do that. We have plenty of time to talk about that of the next four years. Well off to see what happens in november. But i think the party is going to take a hard look after november about what we are going to do and be in the future whether we are going to continue the direction we are heading our weather were perhaps going to go back and look at some of the lessons of what weve accomplished here in maryland but also how ronald ragan was able to revive the party after watergate. We started a conversation. And after nixon everybody said it was the death of the party. It came back. Strong. John thats right. In my mind, and listening to you now is absolutely fascinating. I think theres going to be a moment whether trump is reelected or not, there will be a moment if front trump is not the president and the party will have to ask itself difficult questions related its a situation are you a trump republican or a reagan republican. You have learned so much in this i think what you are saying is your experience in maryland is been winning and whether trump is reelected or not, the president has got to look at exactly that. Is that right. Gov. Larry hogan that is a great way to sum it up. I think we are going to have that discussion either way. I think that party is not to really take a look of where we are heading in what we stand for and how we are going to continue to build a winning coalition. I think it is critically important to avoiding of this discussion. In just few months. John they like it or not, if you are saying i am done with this completely hypothetically. Some of the formation of how would larry hogan presidency get through the trump presidency. Are there key differences to sable for sure i would do this differently or that differently. Gov. Larry hogan i think if you look at how weve been able to be successful here in maryland, i would say a lot of it has to do with the fact that and what i have been really focused on, its a lot about what they admire about president reagan. President reagan really stood up for the things that he believed in rated but he also was willing to sit down and reach out to the other side. We had the great relationship with tip oneill. If they got things done together. They found that Common Ground from that middle ground where they could reach agreements. I think thats whats missing today rated voice believed, i try to avoid the extremes of either party in the divisive rhetoric. Ive had to out of necessity in my state. 70 percent in might legislature is liberal democrats but with headaches tremendous success and got things done because it dont try to demonize the other side. I try to listen to wherever they are. Im a big believer in that compromise is not a dirty word. And that we ought to be in a think what most people are looking for is just common sense bipartisan solutions. I think theres a big chunk of america that is just frustrated the duffel political system right now. I love the fact that reagan brought people together across party lines. A set up for the principles people he didnt but was willing to reach out. I remember the exact quote. Something about 80 percent. You read the book. John about 80 percent of elective is better than nothing right. Gov. Larry hogan and sometimes when just being so started, i think are more effective.
