Council, this is 30 minutes. It is wonderful to have this opportunity it is wonderful to have this opportunity at the time of the alliance is facing a large array of challenges from china to cyberattacks and Climate Change and the pandemic what we need to make today is ensure there will be relevant and effective over the coming decade. And then to begin from the secretaryg general. Working with the alliance for securing democracy will moderate a conversation with the secretarygeneral. At a time when we are looking for leadership where the secretary general is my pleasure to welcome the secretarygeneral to the stage. Mr. Secretarygeneral over to you. Good afternoon from brussels and good morning and welcome to all of those on the line. Asking me to make the Strong Alliance even stronger. To make sure we are affected and then to tackle the challenge challenges, and it is our opportunity where we see the reliance ten years from now and how that will continue in a more uncertain world. I am happy to launch my reflection of nato. Covid19 has changed our lives barely imagine so that when it comes to w our security, to continue the limited military activities and to be embolden in both state and nonstate and with the global balance of power. To keep on the race, multiplying those societies and individual increasing the competition so it is how we adopt the new normal and first and then take a broader approach globally. So first, we need a Strong Military alliance to protect our democracies and continue to compete in a more competitive world. And and to keep us safe as they continue to do today and with the foundation of the prosperity and its only part of the answer. And to use nato more politically. So we can forge a stronger consensus more systematically. And with that security consequences of Climate Change. And also using a broader range of tools. And diplomatic. And the economies and to ensure with those vulnerabilities with that Critical Infrastructure and the frontline to act there is room for a frank discussion and genuine consultation. And we have the structures and institutions in place and then to use nato to decide and to act for shared security. And nato needs a more global approach. And with the global approach. But with the allies almost 1 billion people japan, new zealand and south korea with those institutions that have kept a safe for decades. And in cyberspace in global arms control. And to stand up with freedom and democracy and the challenges that neither europe alone nor america alone so we must insist the National Solutions that we must live up oto our values these values are what make us strong as nations. As we continue to compete in a competitive world we must keep democracy strong. This for nato 2030 is not about reinventing nato strong militarily or politically but to help us get there a group of experts to provide new ideas and to consult actively with allies and the reach out to Civil Society the private six sector and answering here today. The recommendations were set out when we meet next year. Together we cannot to nato 2030 with confidence to keep our people safe in a more uncertain world. Thank you to my thank you for your remarks for the reflection of nato 2030. And the secretarygeneral what a terrific thought and that your goals in this reflection process not reinventing nato but make it stronger and more global . And what that means in terms of thewe relationship with china the stark deterioration with the us china relationship. No. Nato but then when they met in london in december, for the first time in history and then fueled by Economic Growth in that part of the world and the meaning of people but at the same time we see the fact that to have the biggest economy on the world and then coming closer in cyberspace in africa and the Critical Infrastructure and has a security consequence. And then to have Stronger Political alliance and then the sub on south korea or japan. And coming from the leaders in decemberer and with those policy. Thank you very much. But this is historically significant. Thank you for this. So seeming to be pointing to article two. And the piece of language and the International Economic with collaboration between any or all of them. So how important is this do not forcibly mention the European Union for the future that this direction would suggest a closer collaboration with the European Union. You are right. Sometimes and then protecting each other but also working together with the importance overseas with no means of security and maintaining peace and then with the European Union in europe i stronglyop agree in cooperation between the European Union and i pretty much work of the fact and at those levels and i also believe the world will come the efforts that are ont the fence and then they this in that normal state. 80 percent of that expenditure is coming from members and we have no way and as soon as we Work Together we can complement each other. Talk about complementing each other from the other viewers on social media. The first question is from a 16 yearold from the Editorial Team receiving a question of her email talking about the future of nato also speak about the future of the so where do young people that now and in the future . So piece matters especially to young people by providing peace and freedom that young people can decide themselves but these other issues. And then to fight against racism. And then for Everything Else that we do. And then for more than 70 years. And in europe we were ravaged by war for centuries. And the only way to make sure that happens as they continue to have a Strong Alliance. The second question so the chips in germany so hard you comment on thedo media reports with almost 10000 troops from germany . And consulting in the United States. And then after the cold war and this is not only about germany. And the usus brigade. And with those forces in those countries. And with the base for missiledefense so we have seen more us president s and the naval presence for the first time us Aircraft Carrier and with that presence in the militaryhi. So the thing is european allies in the United States are doing work that is the factct to strengthen. And then to ask the question directly. Hello. And thank you very much. And then one of the and we should not take it foror granted. But then coming but first of all they have to acknowledge and then that pandemic as and for us to try gaining more ground and as a result having see the security thats already developing them both members of Nato Alliance p and it is the main premise. Thank you. So i believe in Uncertain Times it is one of the biggest and most important institutions we have established from the Second World War and then to prevent or affecting the people in the countries and i agree if there learn andg we couldf then we need a strong internationalut institution and then with theen strength. And then to launch that if we adapt and the global power is shifting with the rise of china and to have the biggest economy in the world and artificial intelligence. Then its even more important for america andth europe together you cannot imagine to do this to together. So its even more important that we stand together. And the second question. Hello secretarygeneral with your leadership during these Turbulent Times inspecting to do those military challenges was cyber and energy and nato doesnt necessarily hold all the tools in addition to other countries for example how does nato update and expand that Partnership Network that has the right partners to take those challenges . How do we expand that network . Thank you. Not only do we represent 30 members, but we are also working with partners around the world and those global institutions and in the world the idea is constantly changing with that importance of working together which is even more critical for nato and the purpose to strengthen the partnerships. Addressing the Different Military threats we have cyber i believe the truth will prevail in the fact is this information but with covid19 is to undermine the trust in the Democratic Institutions thats what i believe is the way to have that free and independent journalist asking the facts in the stories and to succeed. Thiswant to follow up on question during the crisis we are facing now have you seen that increase are specifically to undermine and then and then to blame the allies of the coronavirus. But then how they are affected and we have seen to coordinate the efforts essentially transporting equipment and medicalnd personnel to help control borders so the military supported by nato to make sure that nato allies the reality is we need facts and also during covid19. And therefore those that are working with communications and messaging everyob day. And major allies and the Democratic Institutions those are important that is the best place to have information to spread the disinformation are not successful. And from afghanistan the most Challenging Mission has been transforming and we welcome those from afghanistan atso the question and the future of nato so the stability over the next decade. And in 2030 but i believe strongly we will have more focus to build the capacity and then to learn from afghanistan. And then nato has to deploy a a large number of combat troops andndbi operations. And then to enable countries to fight terrorism themselves. And then to enable the afghans that this is a huge achievement of a strong african insecurity force african owned and i believe that is the best solution. Pinky very much. And advance those challenges from cyberthe use ofou technology and the adoption of the strategic context and then beyond as well and for the new strategic concept in that role of technology should we have that new strategic conference . Thats a bit too early to pty with those concepts and for me one of the main reasons is that world has changed because they continue to change. And to make sure thatt happens. And then we have identified and corporate security with all around the world. And even with the challenge we are facing their and then with the new cybercommand there are huge changes in nato with the same concept. If we view is that strategic concept are not and then to change nato. And with the Global Health crisis those that are already facing. And then to encounter this threat and with the concept of the coronavirus and then to be prioritized or expended. And those requirements and then with the value of that with the corona pandemic and then to have that but with that second wave of the coronavirus pandemic and a more longterm plan so that resilience infrastructure and 5g and Healthcare Access to protective equipment and we have to support and Work Together. With military support. And then another question beyond the pandemic with more existential. And then of that dual targeted approach in georgia and ukraine investing and with those arsenals and the doctrines and we have responded to this. And the best way for the conflict if there is any room for doubts and to protect the allies so that is one part. The terrorism of defense show will not go away and but it would be dangerous and very costly and then continue to work hard and then i said that i knowe its possible to make agreements with them environment, fishes, environment, fishes, civic and the importance of the cooperation and the dialogue and then to have more questions coming effects on of leave you will see you in the future turning back to washington dc. Mr. Secretarygeneral and to a standing room only audience. There are still 100 questions out there we hope to have you back again on behalf of karen and every one of the Atlantic Council and then as a guest. Thank you for joining us today we hope you can join us on thursday 10 00 a. M. Washington 4 00 p. M. Brussels. And then the mr. Secretarygeneral for these important comments to make when it needs to be stronger
