With you. Donald trump and Winston Churchill have about a common. When you look at both men you wouldnt think that would be the case. One loves to drink in the other is a sixfoot threeinch teetotaler. One nap in his pajamas almost every afternoon and the other barely sleeps. One began their career by introducing and the other by opposing them. One with the soaring orator and the other a rather crude tweeter but nonetheless. On the surface they seem to be fairly different but peter is soon as you start to drill deeper in my looks trump and churchill defenders of western civilization you find the men have remarkable similarities both being intensely dislike and even hated. Both love their country and both clear thinkers, both alpha males, both had an acrimonious relationship with the media, both endured massive apples with the establishment in their own political party. Both had red assessors that were considered very weak. Winston churchill had Neville Chamberlain and donald trump had barack obama so there are incredible parallels between the time in the men and thats why he wrote the book. Host nick adams what made look back at Winston Churchill in history we often picture him as beloved and with unanimous support. Guest is certainly wasnt that why peter, is certainly wasnt that way. Winston churchill much like donald trump was a disruptor. He was somebody that was bold. He was somebody that was brash. He was someone that decided to do things a different way and whenever somebody like that comes into the fold, often the people that have been in the fold for a long time really dont like it. In fact in my book we offer excerpts from Raiders National newspapers written in the early 1940s. I can tell you that those excerpts are from british National Newspapers referring to Winston Churchill. You might think you are reading the Washington Post or the news york times and it was about arnold trump. So similar of the criticisms and so identical or the accusations. Both lack judgment and they dont listen to anybody around them. They know what their gut instincts and they are overconfident and all of the things we have heard over the last three or four years about donald trump were criticisms that were leveled at Winston Churchill. Host both were party switchers as well. Guest they certainly were. Winston churchill was fluid and Winston Churchill was a lifelong politician. He was in the military and donald trump of course was a businessman or both of them had different back runs but they were certainly fluid in their own years in terms of the political affiliations formally that they had. I think what both men had in common was their love of country, a love of the average everyday regular ordinary person and who believed in their country and they had sentiments and tastes that resonated with the people at the time. In the movie the darkest hour a couple of years ago, many of the viewers will remember when Winston Churchill goes to the dash in london and visits with regular commuters. He had that kind of a great relationship with the average person. Again rather surprisingly because Winston Churchill was an aristocratic guy born into money and in the same way donald trump isnt ilya nehr businessman that seems to have a lot of bluecollar pace. The foody eats and what he does. Donald trump loves junk food. Winston churchill similarly obtuse way ate like much of us do on occasion and drank too much, got gallup. I think they are things that we look at as human and say i kind of like that guy doesnt do the things that i do produce normal. Host nick adams you also mentioned that the times were similar. Guest the book certainly right now with what we are going through with the invisible enemy to turn a phrase that President Trump elected to use to put on the coronavirus. Again we saw new york mayor bill de blasio come out recently and accused the president of peddling false optimism with respect to the coronavirus. A lot of that is similar. Churchill was on the outside and donald trump is clearly on the inside. Host what does that mean . Guest churchill of course was fighting the axis powers and becoming tyranny that would take away her foreign enemy and in many ways donald trump is a cultural fighter in a cultural war of a battle for values. He of course does have some foreign enemies as well such as china and iran and others. North korea brought really i think most people see Donald Trumps most major war would be a domestic one where he is fighting various elements of the media, various elements of the Republican Party and obviously the democrats and others. Host your subtitle, defenders of western civilization, two questions. What do you mean when you say western civilization and how are they defenders . Guest western civilization i think it was a civilization that came to be values that were developed in the englishspeaking world in the anglo sphere for lack of a better term, the United States of america and the United Kingdom canada and new zealand. They are western countries with a lot of influence on values and morals that they used all around the world. Western civilization i really think is most of europe and the United States and those kinds of countries not including obviously china or the middle east. In terms of defending it, again both men and tensely patriotic, both men i think love the values, the traditions. Back then churchill was a big supporter of all the values that warning went and donald trump is a big supporter on what america has traditionally been. His Famous Campaign slogan make America Great again. I think those men want to ensure what has always kind of happened in their country stays that way. They are not progressive. They are kind of a throwback to earlier eras which a lot of people find comfortable and a lot of people find rather restrict it. Both men i think really believe in western civilization and they believe in the values and the belief system in the model that contain the western civilization. Host mr. Adams given your accent how long have you been familiar with Winston Churchill . Guest thats a really good question. My father is an act of Winston Churchill fan and when i was eight years old he gave me a book of Winston Churchills speeches and instructed me to not only read but reread and reread as many times as i possibly could because there was no one better to learn from in terms of speechwriting and speech giving. When i was 13 or 14 years old in eighth grade one of my best friends to this day came and gave me a copy of the art of the deal. And thats obviously where my lifelong admiration with President Trump began. I was familiar with both men early. Obviously Winston Churchill given the United Kingdoms relationship with australia someone that features prominently in history class although i will say peter americans are very familiar and its rather a typical because i think its safe to say that most americans dont take all that much of an interest in what goes on in other places because america is so powerful who really cares whats going on elsewhere . Nick number three and this is the point that make repeatedly in the book. She was very american. I mean, it was a bald guy, he refused to concealing him his true self. He refused to conform to expectations. He was very american in his disposition and meaning demeanor. Lets remember, how differently political culture is in the United Kingdom and particularly back then for what it is now. It trump is a maverick but is a nation where mavericks in politics are long tradition where as in england, it was really remarkable the someone like Winston Churchill would come along because the United States, and the kingdom im sorry, their political leader is really community and moderation. So for this guy god, this british bulldog, come out of nowhere and not have any qualms about what anybody has to say about him, his truly unique. Peter Winston Churchill never visited australia. Growth in your book. Nick i dont know why he did it. It was a long ways. I guess things were different back then in terms of travel. I did not go to australia and he did not pretty he did come to the United States many times pretty even a speaking tour and elsa came obviously came and delivered his famous iron curtain address. That would be in missouri. The Churchill Museum there, really is a fascinating place. I love it. So my Favorite Places in the world. He was on the train with the president of the United States. And he confessed that if he could be born again, anywhere that he would choose to be in the United States of america. And of course a quote of Winston Churchill about the inevitable backhanded compliment that was coming where he said, although i did for some of your questions, chief among them being your refusal to drink during meals. The credit lines up with his other famous quote that i always use for my speech. To audiences all over the country. Why said that american always does the right thing after exhausting every other option. Peter you have a similarity to Winston Churchill to give to the u. S. Is that correct. Nick thats true. And that is something that is always bonded to me with churchill. We both love american. Churchill was a huge americana fan. He loved everything about the United States of america really. Over things that mattered. And even the darkest days, he would constantly be assuring people around him, dont worry. America will end up getting involved in everything will end up okay. He did have this belief in america. And im sure his had a lot to do that. And on instinct and writings. He was a very educated man. In his readings ring true today. He saw something in the United States and again like i say, was probably his temperament. Probably his personality. He really fits more in with the color and flamboyance and volume of america as opposed to the rather more relaxed shall we say, british. Peter is a very to say that this book is a little bit from a previous book pretty. Nick it is very much so. I wanted to write something that gave a Historical Perspective on the trunk presidency because so much is being said and written on both sides about donald trump. In his administration but very little so far another understandable given only three and half years in due time in office. We dont know what is going to happen in november of this year. Whether he will be reelected although i say that about his prospects. No one is really doesnt know really what donald trump will look like in history. I find that to be a rather interesting proposition. It is when i decided to export. Three years ago now, i was on the top trying from day one. In 2015 claim on down the escalator, because i have this lifelong admiration with him, from really the art of the deal. My teenage years, kind of felt that with the environment in america, at the time when politicians no matter how talented articulate or how well, was not going to cut it. America really needed a sledgehammer. Of source to change things. Ultimately i ended up being accurate with that. Those good fortune as well as obviously i think good judgment paradigm. Ive always been a big guy. I think that ultimately, as time goes on he will be very much and go type of president , that expression comes from the artist. His outlook wasnt really considered that much but after he died, all of a sudden then he beat came into fashion. I think the same way that history will look more kindly on donald trump and what he is doing right now. The level of in many cases, hatred that so many have ram. I do think that will be the case i dont think that will be the case in couple of decades from now. When the first two conceded is remarkably bold considering rolling 20 years into the century, i do think theres every chance that if he does get elected for another four years, and he will have an impact on such a magnitude they may well become the greatest figure of the century which of course i believe churchill was of the 20th century. Peter was your research process. Nick when he walked at the many at the time. We read all of the churchill books. Those have been. Whether they were biographies, whether they were his own writings, he took a deep dive into his family what makes him Winston Churchill. We certainly looked at all of the speeches including Donald Trumps pretty in the back of the book, we actually chose what i consider to be the five best speeches of both men. Both leaders and i think thats whats going to be a really good resource for anybody who picks up this book. We tried to get both men as naked as we could. And find out everything we could to what made them so they were. And what makes them leaders that they are. And in that research process, i found both men failed a lot as well. Daisy with the passage of time. Im focused on the successes. Now one of the most famous failures that Winston Churchill had not was the 25th of april, in the first world war. Thats locked into australian folklore. There was a really bad decision that he made and ended up in mass casualties. In australia and using the linda quite of the market day every year. And with mixed feelings. Donald trump of course, when a great success, as a businessman like any entrepreneur, failed but sometimes as well. There are lots of things it did not work out the way he wouldve had hoped. What is really interesting peter is when i researched, looking to both of them. It was very clear that everything in their lives, including those failures, actually made them perfect of a moment that they found themselves in. I just going to say that almost everything that occurred in their lives, good and bad, their upbringing, their expenses, their appointments, their relations, including their personality traits. Everything just made them ideal in the moment. Peter you keep saying we pretty who is on their writing team. Nick isa people having me research, editing, i like to do as much as i can by myself. Westerly had assistance. Volume of Research Needed was simply something that i couldnt do. Unless of course i was quarantines like i am now afraid no one had lots of time to do lots of different things. But unfortunately, will back in the good old days. Peter did you had people traveling to the site or did you find every thing online. Nick love, you find everything online. Youve really got an encyclopedia in your pocket. But i did travel back to missouri. I did go and visit the museum there again. And i did go last summer to the churchill floor rooms and west minister. A place that i am into four or five times previously. But knowing this was going be the upcoming book, did go there last july. And spent some time there and photographed a lot. I want to make sure i didnt miss anything. One of the ideas i had, i implemented because unfortunately, everything mightve changed in the last couple of months because of covid19. But i was planning on a book tour is going to be a precise replica of churchill speaking when he came to the United States. And if you go to the churchill war room, it shows you precisely where he went. He wanted on a special trip and i wanted to mirror thats. That unfortunately has been put on hold. Peter and Truman Churchill was published by simon schuster. Trump and churchill. Are you doing any kind of a book tour virtually or otherwise pretty. Nick im doing a lot of stuff like this on seven skype. Theyve been, my best friends. Occasionally i do some audience stuff as well. But for the most part, it is been private gatherings, and hearing to whether the law is. Im hoping that in the next four six weeks, things will open up a little bit and will be able to get some sized crowds and be able to get onto it. Because i think is very much a book that does deserve a tour. I think it is one that is readers are going to really enjoy particularly intellectually. Peter you mentioned the speeches in the back of the book. What is your favorite churchill in your favorite trump speeches nick my favorite trump speeches the one he gave in poland. That was actually well received by the media. One of the only times in his presidency were that has happened where he spoke i thought rather movingly and eloquently in freedom and values and it seems to be when he is really at his pinnacle, when he speaks about those things. And you really cant go past the churchill speeches, on the beaches. That is something, just listening to that, used to have an ipod good notes on iphone pretty but all of churchill speeches on an ipod. I believe president obama did too. I believe that was a gift that he got. Faceless into that all of the time. Just that way that is delivered. I can only imagine what that wouldve been like hearing back in those dark days. Peter where you base now and what is your Organization Called nick im in the dallasfort worth area here in texas. Thats where i decided to hang my boots pretty for a variety of reasons. Like texans and its right in the middle of the country. Given that i dont spend that much time in texas, that was important to be close to wherever i have to be. My organization, the foundation to the liberty of american right discipline and when you and i said last spoke in january of 2017, it was just growing in beginning. Im pleased to say that is really grown into a national organization. A leading organization. Million dollar budget. Doing phenomenal things. As a reminder, so about teaching civics and providing patriotism in public schools. Clyde usa. Org. We going to schools, we credited resources based on the founding documents. So we created the student constitution, declaration of independence, the papers and guide to the Electoral College and offer Development Training where we teach teachers how to incorporate patriotism and take civics again the way it used to be taught. Peter we know because you said so, President Trump and myers Winston Churchill. Nick i think both men, it would be interesting to see. Donald trump the diet coke and onehanded Winston Churchill with the court and the other. And chicken wings or Something Like that. I think both men would be sitting down next to each other. And they would be speaking at rather unfavorable to put my build violent terms about the media. In about journalistic. By the softies and their political party. And how weak their predecessor was. I think the men would have a very interesting conversation. If to be a fly on that wall peter. Peter nick adams newest book. Trump and churchill. Thank you for spending time with us.
