So two degrees of separation between his family and my family i said oh my gosh. Thats when it became incredibly real this wasnt just a sweet innocent old woman that was strangled, raped, and murdered in queens this was actually something we knew and that pulls at the heartstrings and gives you plausible who cares about your politics, we have to put America First and the security and safety of our citizens. [applause] in this case arose its one of the more stark environment tragedies weve seen partly because its one of the more helpless victims but at the same time, weve seen this happen to children from people who we had requested the department of Homeland Security, i. C. E. Had requested from previous arrests that criminals be turned over to us and you will hear two things frequently, i wont say in defense because theres really no defense but on the other side. One is that, the rate of crime among illegal aliens is no different than any others, i wont even argue over that because it doesnt matter. Thats fake news. The reality is in this womans case in the fontes case and many children sitting here in pg county they had ms 13 murder 14yearold girl last summer with their policies right here in this county and these are crimes that should never happen. It isnt a question of the rate of crime the rate should be zero because the criminals shouldnt be in this country. [applause] him and weve given these communities the way to protect themselves by removing these violent criminals from their communities. Thats argument one, argument two is that the victims have no voice. They have no voice. When youre pg county here where we sit or new york city they are literally defending criminals and this is not against President Trump they are defending criminals at the expense of victims. So who are you for . Mayor de blasio is for criminals. Governor cuomo is for criminals. We could go around the country, mayors and governors across the country who are literally picking criminals over crime victims in completely preventable crimes. That is the worst here is how completely avoidable all of this is. These are percentages or odds or maybe it will happen to me, these are literally crimes that could have been completely prevented 100 guaranteed if they had simply corroborated with immigration and Customs Enforcement with i. C. E. With the department of Homeland Security and with President Trumps efforts to keep all of you safe and everyone else in america as well. If the media is doing their job why is there not such outrage over this. Its interesting i use the local example i will use another one, the only local media person in america that i know of that does a good job on this is because he just acts like what we think a journalist is a supposed act like. His name is kevin lewis hes in Montgomery County the next county over and i dont know politically what kevin lewis believes how about that . A journalist who you dont know what their political beliefs are. But he just reports what happens in his community so this past june when their chief executive declared Montgomery County a county of over a Million People to be a sanctuary county then they proceeded to have a rape or murder including of children, every week for nine straight weeks. Nine straight weeks of victimization by the pool who were removable from this country, evan lewis reported on it. He just said what happened. Thats all he did. How about that . Shrewd. The truth is a powerful ally as we all know here. In fact, what we expect from a responsible media. To answer your question, by and large the answer is no. I single out kevin lewis because its a complete exception in the journalist profession of actually reporting news and letting all the rest of us draw our own conclusion if that were going on in every community, if that existed in new york, if that existed in los angeles, you have a different outcome. Let me prove it to you. Lets go back to Montgomery County. The fall of 2019 and the victimization after victimization including of children as young as 11 years old they backed off. There is accountability from public pressure. Many of you here probably went to the protests in Montgomery County with Michelle Malkin and others, right . That pressure in an overwhelmingly single Party Jurisdiction still got them to change their policy and what we care about in the department of Homeland Security is what they say, its what they do and they started to cooperate with i. C. E. They started to let us know when these criminals were going to get released and lo and behold we havent had nine weeks of victimization since that time. It works. Security works and it keeps their Community Safe too. It can be turned around and it can be made to work in the most partisan of communities weve got. I just wanted to chime in on that, as i mentioned, the grand order of the deceased women i spoke i had a chance to interview with her a couple days ago on a podcast and that was the point that she made. Its amazing how nobody knows about this stuff. It becomes a media story when this woman is in her words killed three times. Her back was broken, her neck was broken, she was raped and then murdered, strangled to death and it has to give you pause when you say, wow, is that what it takes for the media to respond to a crisis . The fact that ms 13 you mentioned it earlier in queens new york shooting each other rival gangs broad daylight 12 noon on a crowded subway. These things are happening and its a flash in the pan 24 hours, 48 hours, something that she said in her interview, which really stuck with me was that shes going to dedicate the rest of her days to making sure sanctuary city policies are defeated. [applause] why do you think democrats are so supportive of sanctuary cities . Coming up in politics somebody taught me a long time ago they said, its about the money and when its not about the money its about the money. [laughter] i think there is so much truth in that. Irrespective of how people will vote, its more about headcounts and census and redistricting, congressional teams, the more people you have, the more money the power of the person. Thats what it comes down to. I think they are putting not only party but politics over patriotism and its that simple. I would point to the history. Most of the laws that President Trump has us enforcing and passing new regulations like the public charge rule that requires the pool who want to immigrate here legally to stand on their two feet so tax burdens are abso many of the rules come out of the 1996 Immigration Law that was passed on such a wildly bipartisan basis that it went to the u. Name after name, pelosi voted for one version, bill clinton signed this into law back at a time when immigration policy was about common sense, not these kinds of calculations. Unfortunately it has become a political weapon used by the left to achieve what they hope our longterm strategic goals. So they stopped making decisions based on what makes sense but back when it was a common sense question you get but max like the defense act in 2006 that was voted on the past overwhelmingly in 2006 10 years after the immigration bill where Chuck Schumer in the senate feinstein, people like this voted for the bill and building the wall, which i was there tuesday its a levy and a wall, the new engineer in me kind of appreciates that. Its part of over 126 new miles of wall and this president will more than double that this year, triple or quadruple it. They voted for policies like this. When it was common sense instead of little advantage. To that point, i think its so important we have a law. Im an american but of puerto rican heritage and i appreciate latinos and hispanics but i appreciate america and we have to defend america and with the coronavirus its so important that we have a firm grip on our borders. Justice statistic for you, walls work in san diego in tucson when the president s wall got built crossings dropped by 25 . In yuma they dropped by three quarters once the wall was built. They worked the officers tell you they work and this is important to me i know its important to you while its important to the secretary and the president. [applause] you mentioned the coronavirus, which is one of the questions i wanted to mention its a worldwide concern now. I know this is a nobrainer but i dont think people can really connecting how folks could come here illegally and have diseases. Some have reported on sickness at the border in the past, we deal with tb, measles, other things where we have largescale medical competitions that tends to fall on i. C. E. , the Border Patrol agents asked these people on i. C. E. Who have procedures to deal with it and we dealt with hundreds komodo thousands but when you are talking about a pandemic and you overlay that on a border crisis and as much progress as we made since last eight months of declining numbers which hasnt happened since 1992 we still are at crisis level. We do not have facilities that can quarantine tens, scores, hundreds, thousands of people. This creates a new wrinkle to the crisis where we have to look at ways to bar entry and i will tell you as deputy secretary at dhs are not prepared to put my folks at risk any more than any of you would. If you prioritize their safety and their health where we dont have tools to necessary deal with this, it limits our options rather dramatically. It is a great concern. We deal with a lot of aspects of this we been dealing with it at the airports and seaports and land ports effectively up to this point but not with mixed with illegal Immigration Crisis at the same time. That is not a happy thought that something weve obviously been planning for but the options are terribly limited. Our time is almost up but just to wrap up, any issues or comments you want to make .
