Bradford king, he ha he has sero the house energy and s president clintons healthcare reform. Joining him will be the Vice President of the executive director of it this program on philanthropy and social innovation. She is the founder of the global philanthropy and served on the Clinton Administration to the president and senior director of the National Security council. Without further ado please welcome them both. [applause] thank you so much. What we will do is start with the conversation between us and then well go to the audience to ask questions directly into the process you know the appetite for reading the book. I spent the weekend reading it and it is very terrific. Let me start where you start in the book which is to describe the various shaking forces that help shape her culture and politics in the way in which the moment we are in today, the political moment, the social moment, the cultural moment were in today. You start by arguing that throughout our history there has been an ongoing tension in the sense of ourselves between rugged individualism on the one hand and as a community collectivism on the other. Say a word about that and tell us, give us a sense of what president mightve figured out how to manage or navigate that tension best. Great place to start, even prior to that i would like to think politics and prose and all of you for being here this evening. What she was just referencing, go back to the earlier colonial days, basically the question as a phrase it, we have a split personality International Identity and thats between the camino collectivist in the rugged individualist. If you go back to the earliest times, what makes america america, how did we start, why are we who we are, if you look at the Common Element it seems as both sides are united by basically rejecting royalty. The idea having royalty and lords and ladies, everyone else is serves, you cannot work your way out of it, one thing that unites us is commitment and belief and opportunity in social mobility. The question in division is when you get to the next question for him. On the one hand rugged individuals are committed to the power of the individually, the liberty of the individual to pursue their own dreams to aggregate as they wish to accumulate as they wish in terms of wealth and power were as the communal collectivist are committed to equality and empathy and reaching out to other people and recognizing the strength of the community, everyone succeeds better when everyone succeeds. Ultimately only some people succeed and other people dont then eventually it comes back to hurt those who thought they were getting ahead because in their social friction and issues in those divisions and all creates attention which is problematic. So that division which goes back to colonial days projects forth, thats how we got the declaration of independence with the constitution, the china balance with liberty and equality. Whether or not they had the exact work, there are some flaws there, some they do not include everyone thats why we have the mom of the constitution. But nonetheless thats original effort and as you are saying in terms of which president are aware, it is interesting that we are somewhat of split personalities there is a bit of a pendulum swing were sometimes the presidency of one type leads to the presidency of the other type. So we have seen them, sometimes it goes through. Time, it was all individualist with letting everything have free reign and thats when we had the robber barons of the gilded age and from there you have the populist movement which started to rise in response and objection to that and then we have springing forth from both is Teddy Roosevelt who is a fascinating example. He embodies both, he was tremendous, he was a true rugged individualist in every sense in terms of the biographical outline and everything that he did and his nature and persona the way he would project himself very boldly. And yet, a lot of his policies were collectivist before he was at the time, democrats and republicans were different parties and that i believe is a time of realignment. He put forth a number of things and his progressive platform which were not picked up until years later partly by wilson, partly by fdr but its amazing when you look at is identified in chapter one when you look at whats in the platform, it is very impressive. He was an unusual case of both. Then we have the president who took the concepts and went global with them. That is to say they started to think of it from a collective point of view, community of nations so you have woodward wilson, truman, tell us about him and ultimately clinton at the globalization president. Say a word about that next step of defining herself internationally. That is a fascinating thing, while the individuals in collectivist, that division springs forth and injects itse itself, it has branches with so many other issues and policies so international is one of those, the tension between isolationism or integration or interdependence is a recurring theme throughout American History that has been playing out throughout all of our lifetime and especially now so what we see, first of all very interestingly after world war ii we seem to have a consensus about interdependence and alliance and enter match interest and a lot of what Foreign Policy is issued interest. Whether democrat or republican there was a broad recognition as opposed to 1940, 1940 the european war began and there was a Strong Movement in 1940 to keep the United States out of another european war and so the interesting thing the democrats and republicans seem to accept that framework up until the new round of America First, by the way the same language in the 1940, but the new round of America First, which was not defined. It was a slogan. As were rustling of what America First means and what the consequent desire, these are things that were not forecasted not laid forth, a template that was put forth. We are dealing or wrestling with the consequences right now. If hes at the end of the spectrum of rugged individualism, here suggesting that his version is somewhat different and its about one individual in particular . Individualism traditionally throughout our entire history going back to colonial days has been a philosophy, its been attitude about liberty and Less Government intrusion and limited government and basically not wanting government interference or assistance. In the case of the person currently of whom we speak, it has taken a higher level of individualism, not only in philosophy, it is about him, it is not just individualism, it is the individual. So we see that and basically everything that he does. Its unfortunate, its regrettable that i put it this way but normally we talk about American Government in the context of government in terms of policy and principle and philosophy. Unfortunately today what it comes down to, most decisions are made on the pit enter basis of personality and psychology. That is extreme individualism. We have heard them say im the only one who can fix it, i think im paraphrasing, the foreignpolicy interview he said im the one that matters, it is only me so basically the way that he operates, the reason why a lot of people have a hard time figuring out what the policy is and what we stand for is because it changes, why does it change, its based on the individual, as it changes, so does the direction of what were doing. So that is is extreme individualism its in its own category. What you find is other people interpreting true psychology instead of the logic of the ideology or the worldview. As the rugged individual of the spectrum, what does that mean for the institutions and the norms that were built up for policies that were based on a balancing between the two, internationally it would be nato, and the set of norms that support that but domestically it is also the institution built around a sense of a balancing act between the two. What isnt meant for that . Trump basically does not give any weight to precedent. In fact one of trumps core driving forces is to deconstruct deconstruction of the ministry of state, complicated way of saying taken down. , one point in the book i do discuss the five driving forces that seem to propel Donald Trumps preferences and his actions and its a cycle, sometimes its number one or two in the rotate but those are the kind of forces, what does it mean, it means we have a setback. Doesnt mean that you retrievable, i do not believe so. I think first of all there are so Many Americans who know the importance of those standards and of those relationships and alliances and partnerships and the stability that it gives us in terms of National Security in World Security and also monetary security and Everything Else that first of all, americans theres a lot of subnational movements happening right now. So a lot of that will continue and theres a lot of people around the world who know were going through a phase. By the movements you mean like california adopting its own, is that what youre referring to . Can states, private sector, nonprofit sector, citizen groups, there has been so much activism having been activated because of that. So yes, its not as though itll be a plugandplay, were not talking about turning the clock back, it is a situation where these things still exist, there still healthy, still strong appetite and i believe with someone else in the white house at some point, whether that be sooner or later, at some point there will be a recognition, what eisenhower did was for good reason, what truman did was for good reason, when we fastforward is our world better off this way or that way, i think youll see a lot of these things be reestablished, unfortunately there is a toll like taking the United States out of the paris climate agreement is tragic because it sets the whole world back but it does not mean that you retrievable, it just means were further back than we should be. This may be a retreat from the arrangement might actually stimulate at the heart of our resilience that we are our country in publi public and prie and citizens have roles to play in our democracy and maybe this is a good thing . I completely agree and having you put that way, absolutely. One of the fascinating things is a pendulum swings throughout a mark in history bring other people into the pole, one chapter i discuss the political process. When one group gets involved, other groups want to be involved, when something happens is present the people. That is interesting thing about 2016, 2016 as we all consider it, theres reasons why 2016 happened, there were people who were being disenfranchised, they felt like the democrats and republicans were not being responsive and they felt like they were not being heard, they had not recovered from the economic rubble of 2008 and 2009 and they felt like Neither Party was helping them. So they wanted action, they were willing to turn the vote upside down and start over. So they became part of the process where they had been marginalized and stop participating. The fascinating thing, because of that we saw what happened with the first woman march and january 2017 and every year end everything after that, we saw what happened in the Midterm Election in 2018, when you look at things like emilys list and emerge in the different organizations that recruit and train women candidates, they had a surge like never before like they had not prepared for and we see more women members of congress and are talking about state legislatures and local government and it activated a huge slice of the population in a way that is maybe not for the best of reasons but a very positive development, of course keep in mind as that happens, other people also want to join the process of activation. So theres two other big trends, i will go to a couple of them. You just talked about that disinfection that comes out about economy. Well talk about that in a little bit about democracy. In the demographic change, when it came to economic globalization, was a positive, wealth, lifted millions from poverty, china and india, the middle class experienced a declining standard of living. The markets took us, what was the role or what shouldve been the role policy to mitigate the damage to help the middle class make the transition into a new economy. Did we screw up . We did not do all that we couldve done and we didnt do as much as we shouldve done. Globalization is real and its awkward to stop or be reversed, we get on airplanes to go to cities and countries, we do not want that to stop. Whether its travel or something, communication, you may call anywhere in the world anytime you want, for those of us who remember what Long Distance used to mean and what the rates were. Its a very different era and this is all good. So the fact that theres globalization that means supply change and fulfillment in marketing and opportunities to sell, these are all good things. The problem is, while that was happening there were externalities as a result of that and they were not well accommodated or adjusted for, theres everything from a need for more job skill training, more need for strategic and tactical change in the economy, for example in the chapter about trade and globalization where it seems as though trump is very active when he goes to other countries to sell a particular product on his line at the time, boeing comes to mind, he is certainly represented them in various discussions. To do one offs, maybe that is nice, what is needed is a broad scale coherent, Cohesive Strategy for example what the president could do rallying using all the forces of the government, federal, state local, private sector and nonprofit would be to come up with a strategy targeting Certain Industries that will be prominent in the future like 5g, environmental remediation, Clean Technology fuels, things like that, come up with which are the companies, which are the scientist to contribute, which are the educational facilities and institutions and i have something offer, who are the experts of fulfillment and supply and strategy and training the havoc cohesive and coherent, was that done sufficiently, i believe it was not, is there an opportunity in the future . Big time. One thing i thought might come with a selection was attention to apprenticeship in the ways of the germans have dealt with with the shift in the structure of the economy, we have not seen that, the innovation happening out there that were failing to capture or is there an indifferent to this problem . Thats another shortcoming of america, suggesting is America First and america only instead of learning best practices from other countries and term from a printer ships and also part of it is a cultural thing in terms of which industry do we want to encourage, do we want to put in a positive light, does everyone want to become an American Idol . I do. But there is also a great opportunity for daily jobs in the forefront of whats important. Yes we have awoken to the importance of Stem Education and research and training especially with gender equity but theres a big opportunity for people who are members of unions for example who are participating in making everything grow in our cities on a regular daily basis. The other thing that surprised me sorry this book keeps slipping. The lack of attention and structure came as a surprise to me and i think probably just in case one subsonic. That seems like an opportunity missed, i wonder if thats the thing the next president will pursue, maybe there is a consensus in washington to make those investments if you care about the competitiveness of your economy. There is a shortage of longterm planning and thinking and part of that is structural in terms of how the politics in the timeframe but i would absolutely agree for the longterm benefits that the next president hopefully will be having a longterm vision and also that i believe is a way to get greater bipartisanship in American Government because when youre only dealing in shortterm interest theres more to fight about, whos getting a particular pot of resources or Something Like that in the short term, there is more to fight about. If you look at things in terms of longterm any franchise communities across the country, working toward the longterm goal, thats where you get a lot more people on board. Let me take you to the next one, is that the year 2042, 2045, 2042. When the communities that we refer to as communities of color in the aggregate comprise the majority, that the transition, talk a little bit about the role of race in our country, over time and are struggle that does not seem to have ended. Absolutely, in connection i will also as an answer that i want to describe why its called pitchfork populism, because its very much tied in with that. One of the things that trumps identified was there were certain fears and resentments doctor in america, there was a fear among the people that he was listening to, fear of 2042 when nonwhites outnumber whites, there was also resentment about financial, fears and resentments together combined lead to grievances in a mentality that leads to a Grievance Movement which also has some people turning to who were the others looking at the traditional scapegoating, we have different language now. So that is basically what pitchfork populism is a new concept, new notion of the president benefiting from this particular type of movement which by the way i consider to be false populism, not real populism but a Movement Based on fear and anger and resentment and grievance and part of that is about demographics, some people who fear, we are losing our country and adobe completely different. Not realizing that that is this country has never been one particular way, there have been demographic movements throughout the country, people have the same resistance in the 1800s, there is irish coming over, italians, jewish, russians, and those are all european. So the notion that this is somehow a new era were certain people and others coming from elsewhere in the demographics are changing, its in the lesion, part of what the United States used to be mexico. So the entire concept, emotionally that is a problem and i think theres ways to deal with it and adjust partly and that one of the things about pitchfork populism and what happened in the u. S. Is there were so many people who were so caught up with their concerns and their fears and anxieties and anger that Neither Party are satisfying my needs and im angry and im scared so going to try donald trump, now that they did that they see what they got, so thats when it comes to in question of where they go in the future, demographically, the change does not happen overnight, there is a gradual adjustment, people become more familiar with people in their communities, people Work Together and people are in the workplace is that schools and the more interaction there is, the more that it becomes a natural part of life and that and pull some 2016 of im fearful of demographic transition, therefore im going to vote for donald trump because of that, i think that fear will no longer surge in that same way. One of the will finish and then will learn how you define american, one of the liberal democracy of our democracy has been a commitment, there is a notion that multiple cultures can be with sidebyside within a Larger Church community. My question, has that commitme commitment, how do we hang on to the democracy. Along with that division of individualism and collectivism, there is you cannot avoid talking about tribalism to some degree. The way i look at it, there are circles, a question of how do you draw the circle of interest, some people on the individual side to a barrow narrow drawling around themselves and their family some their village and town, sumner city, similar state and then you get to the Biggest Country in the world. So tribalism is when people are identifying with my circle and not your circle. And that is an ongoing problem. But the question is as people become more familiar with each other and i also think there is some ways that familiarity can be increased and some of those concerns are abated. But as that happens, we recognize tribalism at the national level, we somehow there arent too many people that objected at the olympics were chanting usa, usa. That is the tribalism that we seem to embrace but theres the other kind when you talk about the community and we have ours and we dont want to include other folks. That is part of the problem. Some people will refer to them as well and another way to put it and it is tearing us apart. I guess the question returning to the president in what is the role of the private sector leaders to try to help us to these transitions. When i think of what it is to be an american, we dont have the same ethnicity, we dont have the same religion or language, there Something Else that unites us. How would you describe the values, what do you see as the unified team of americanness . Part of it goes back to the colonial times of opportunity and social ability in the constitution of all 27 amendments to the independent and also president lincoln words were part of that as well. Then on top of the on both sides pretty much across the country the rule of law is generally accepted. How can we amplify them. What can we do. Part of it is about unity. I think were all thrown for a loop when a National Politician is trying to divide instead of unified. But i think that or i think that is something that is going to be maintained by other leaders. So on those divisions, japan, still kind of holding onto the issue of race and demographic makeup, we see individual policies that have expression to the worst. And if you cant sort of change the whole picture with a magic wand, what kind of individual policies would you go after. Immigration policy. The preference for no region immigrants which are none. Theres a whole slew of policies that we look like theyre on a different subject, that race plays a huge role. Absolutely. There was quite something when he made that comment. What characteristics isnt that norwegians have the drove him to say it. They have obama care. That is why they are not sleeping. There you go. And unusual weather. Some things actually are or seem like bells and whistles but are meaningful. To me, personally, even the word minority i think is outdated. It is inherently diminutive and aggregating because as a minority and then there is a majority. So as we look at the year 2042 when nonwhites outnumber whites. I think it is time for a new term like the modern majority are the new majority. Or something of that nature especially when you consider among whites, well break down each category avoids and therefore diminish each group. How many germanamericans are there and have an impression americans are there. We talk about whites. So that number seems inflated. It seems like even in terms of the new majority i think, would put things in a different light. I think also in high school there should be High School Class will appreciate history in her High School Classes that were not talking about and limiting that. They contemporary class in high school, the diversity in contemporary society doesnt just deal with things that happened 200 years ago, but deals with today. Showcasing leaders of every ethnicity and contributions be made to society. When a 12 yearold is using a cell phone, how does a cell phone get there. By this person and that person, they had that heritage but when people start understanding that, then they start to recognize that we are all a country and its a unifier. So those are some things but then of course some of it is dead Center Policy in principle like voter registration. In the removal of voters from the voting rolls. There is the Randolph Institute court case in ohio. The Voting Rights law. We came before the supreme court. A number of these things. Theres got to be an appreciation and recognition of equality. And that which levels the playing field, should be embraced. The trick is, to find ways to accommodate both sides of the same side. Opportunity, yes. Do you have liberty to start a business and create something yes. But at the same time, were going to make sure that everyone has the opportunity. So im going to take you to a quick conversation about this trend. The media. Then just get you questions about today. As well of us today and tomorrow. A little bit about the senate trial. And what this means for the various things that you have put forward. And a little bit anticipating the 2020 elections. And then were going to turn to the audience for the direct questions to you. So to the media. The industry, that is most disrupted by the information level evolution, is the media. And at the same time, the Business Model not working and at the same time this essential Civil Society actor in a democracy and so suggested that is all lies. We know with the stresses and strains are but what is the way out. What is the way forward. And ensuring that the American Public is discerning and able to capture the knowledge they need to make the awesome the decision that they need to make in 2020. Juice. I bring this down and discussing the media and the battle over truth and facts. Theres the good in the bed and the. The good is that everyone can look at the media now. There is not a hard gatekeeper the week is always been in the past. From the internet. The bad is that there is no universal set of accepted facts and truths like when Walter Cronkite would speak. And also that because in social media, theres a lack of a curator. So people can say all kinds of things. In the ugly is when because of this, the truth gets manipulated in a course, donald trump has been doing that. According to the Washington Post fact checker, at the three your point of his presidency has now told over 60000 lights. Other president s have told lies from time to time actually i appreciate it when the National Security, you dont want to inform our adversaries about something but if you lies are a pattern after a while. It becomes a practice and then it becomes pathological and then it becomes predictable. And unfortunately, it is predictable now. It is a big problem. How you do with that. I answered that in two buckets. One is broadcast and largescale media and the others social media. And in the case of broadcast media in largescale, the number of things that can be done. Personal, reporting ugly should be done contextually. I just recordings with for example when did the president say. But accuracy check. What he said. What is really behind it. And thirdly, was there something from which we were intended to be distracted by that particular statement or utterance. And it also on the case of television, at the bottom of the of breaking news. But there could be a karen saying you are alert. Of falsehood and progress. [laughter]. Something notifying the viewer the something, because youre not going to interrupt a speech but have the power on at the same time, letting this pure snow that something is false. That is an option. The social media site, because there is no curator, so little bit more difficult. Personally believe in Consumer Protection in the media and should also be taught at the high school level. But then when you get to social media, a number of things. They should have to be labeled as foreign sources. And secondly individual should be able to block the foreign source material from the social media stream. Thirdly if there is foreign source and say someone is opted in, and therefore source material that should be collaborating Usbased Source along with it. And together with names and with who is a paid for by a number of things like that that would be full disclosure and full awareness. And so the people can know exactly who it is to his speaking to them. I think the audience deserves to ask you questions. When the mist of a senate trial. We know the outcome. Question on what it will be. The question is when the president is, will we get to are the same but engage foreign power and any information around our election. First of all i dont think it will fit. Because the evidence is the evidence. And we can all see what the evidence is. Whether or not there happens to be a vote that allows him to stay in office, the possibility. He will oversell it. And the evidence will remain for that matter evidence will continue to mount. Also i would make a point my prediction on the impeachment goes as far as the question of witnesses. As it is now, it seems that that is up in the air. I do believe that if witnesses are allowed, and we have to stop and recount. I will reduce the rest of the questions to just one. The election be hacked. Will definitely be attempts. There are a lot of state actors for taking action to try to prevent that from happening. There was serious resistance in the senate to allowing the house bill to go forward. One was in december, that would forward as part of the package where there is now some money systems to prevent that. How they will be distributed and allocated and how effective they will be but at least that is something be done. So yes it will be attempts and hopefully everyone will do all they can to prevent them from materializing. It. Will the next president be seen as legitimate by the majority of the public. Yes but i would put that in it different contexts. There are no such thing as just talking in terms of the American People for their electric. Yet record on. When you talk about his hardcore base, if he loses, hardcore base which by the way does not reflect 42 percent, job approval number, it does and when you look at the different numbers, you see between 21 and 25 percent. They will probably answer your question is no. The republicans even who supported trump will probably say yes. If he were reelected, depends on how he were reelected. People on the other side, democrats in voting along the democratic ten candidates, to be on the collective side. They want to be a little bit more understanding with the exception of certain pockets. Please let us know your questions. Just raise your hand. Given your trends that you had, what do you feel or how are these trends shaping the coming up election. And is it shifting it to or away from the current president or continuing to support the current president. Desanto in 2020, people know who donald trump is pretty 2016, they did not know. Theres a green screen for some people would refer to it where people could project onto donald trump whatever they wanted to protect and you can do that anymore. History is. Especially because his personal psychology is in the Public Domain. I mentioned that because it used to be that the goal sokol goldwater rule we couldnt talk about someone. He puts his psychology to what his needs are in the Public Domain by his constant stream of tweets by the way, think was yesterday. Personal record of a hundred and 42 tweets and retreats. In one night. So from all of that, we can see who he is. And how that factors in in the big way. So is it just based on policy, no. Will be partly policy. A lot of people like for example earlier when youre talking about immigration, a lot of people feel like what he does is completely in contravention with the market values that are near and dear to all of us. And it was bipartisan. Having the separation of children and family and kids engage us in serving the marina wednesday and concerning it all your fine, a long list of how he treated immigrants at the border. Also when you look at the asylum numbers now the comedown from six digit numbers anti like 50000. Port 15 or 16000 currently. Its kind of crazy. And its American Values and who we are predict whether its on a personal basis of policy bases and realizing, if this person see fit to serve in this this person have the character, all that it takes as a person who would be appropriate to serve in the presidency. No. What about this broad trends and impulses that they support. And some of them are very much the same but gave us ronald ragan. And some of his policies. They felt that this was not the rule of state, the role of families and individuals. The very wealthy, and yet there was something very very different about him. There wasnt abortionists, the personal cruelty. He seemed very different. Can you imagine in the next round, their lifetime that there will be another president that represents us in the political impulse but will deliberate in a very different way. Is very important to know the difference is pretty those remember the ragged tape greg ragan presidency. There was a lack of empathy. Quebec medicaid and food stamps and so forth. There was not. However there are major differences. Ronald reagan was a happy warrior. He worked with people on the hill including with democrats. That counsel also. He would discuss with people openly and sometimes make adjustments. Also his policy whether you agree with him or disagreed with him, was based on his philosophy. None his psychology. Wasnt out of narcissism that Ronald Reagan did what he did. Unfortunately in donald trump case, one of the five driving forces that point to is narcissism. Weve all seen it. Ronald reagan didnt do that. Another thing is he valued international partnerships. Many of principles and values that he would hereto. I want to go back to the title of your book. In the image that it evokes in the emotion think about verse moving and the pendulum swinging back and coming to a new place where we can rest a little easier. Other things that have emerged during the swing this one. That are nonetheless kind of preserving and keeping in mind, and its a broad question but one of the things that i am thinking of they could focus on or anything else that you would like to focus on and said but the idea of the meritocracy and how that sort of relates to the resentment against the elite and probably most of it in his room have benefited in some way from being regarded as having some merits and being smarter than average and having people that they know who helped introduced us to somebody who can help us get our first job or Something Like that. As part of the meritocracy then needs to be rethought and maybe changed. I appreciate that. And there is a big space between the meritocracy and the cactus constancy and it being the government that is run by the people least qualified and least capable and meritocracy is being on the opposite end of the spectrum. Is also an important word for the crossword puzzle to have. [laughter]. Crystal yes, i think there is a lot we have experienced and learned from this era. So start, as i mentioned before, is the etchasketch will be just the back to previous time. We learned a lot and experience a lot and we recognizes and people were not included and must be included. We need to do more. More programs to benefit them. Whether youre talking about appalachia, certain other parts of the country that maybe needs Economic Development and Educational Opportunity to transfer to another or from an older economy to a new york economy. When youre talking about much apostasy. So does that we can say if you hear your fine and youre not. What we see in this particular government is first of all, theyve got a lot of vacancies because they cant find people who want to work in in this environment. And partly because of the want under the circumstances of what we hear on a regular basis, the people leaving that other people coming and there is the need for bringing more people in. But in the broader sense of society and meritocracy, yes, is the idea that you dont have to go to harvard. You dont have to go to harvard. Maybe you go to a Community College or maybe you go to your school and state. The question is are the questions and career tracks and guidance counselors, are there meetings with local companies and corporations we can get a start. Start working way of. Does everyone have to be a fivestar road scholar. No. Is there a respect for the individual on humanistic level in a way that the community collectivist should be embracing in a very big way. This one of those bipartisan areas where and actually fits the communal collectivist to be able to reach out and put their arm around from the inside. Can i add a piece to that. As a positive thing that has happened. If its brought into real relief, the fact that those with a College Education those without. Below is have a tremendous difference in earning power. An unassuming, the gap is the looming. Enough nothing else, are people who are worried about her politics and of the role that inequality is playing and dropping of politics, and things come to understand and said problem to be solved. It is on all of us t. I shouldve included in my previous, is diversity and inclusion has got to be in the forefront everywhere from Corporate Board rooms to hr offices and schools in every every sector, is not a question of when its time for. Be a horizontal defense in everywhere. Who are we not hearing from that we might get them interested in coming and joining us. Any question regarding the current happenings in senate and actually if the witnesses, the result is that the current president stays in office and will not removed. Do you think that a positive thing that comes out from the impeachment trial is greater bipartisanship in the houses. The reason i stated that way is because theres a lot of people on the republican side who seem to be grudgingly going along with the party. They seem to be doing it the w way. Theyre doing this the maybe date would be more willing to do other things. Do you see anything positive coming out of this might help the bipartisanship in congress. Because i know there is a lot of differences. But do you see anything positive coming or is that just something they dont see it all. I would like to take that into steps. One is bipartisanship in general and congress. Counterintuitively, i think the donald trump actually is creating an environment where bipartisanship can thrive. I know it doesnt seem like basis but first of all, when basically two things, one is democrats and republicans realize that they need to Work Together in order to get the music government on. Everything from the debt limit to basic programs and funding the government will all be appropriation bill and need to Work Together and we have seen some forces of bipartisanship always below the top really highly contested issues. But is nice or aside from that, you see that and when donald trump offense basic valleys, charlottesville, emigration, the border and it goes on and on and on. And republicans are repulsed. And that is a good thing because it offends American Values. And some of them dont like to make things up and a lot of us take issue with the fact theyre not coming clean how they really feel. But it is evident so there is a sort of amount of bipartisanship impeachment. Can do that as well. I actually had the honor of being in the gallery on tuesday. I was fascinated to see there is genuine attention and this may be waning now because this been going on from any of her days. But genuine attention to the person speaking and then when there was something in the screen, everyone would shift and focus. Nac this really is a lot of concern on a human level a lot of people recognize that this was wrong. The question is, on those votes about the witnesses, maybe of guthrie now, which of for you will have more than four. The question is will you get the fourth. I am one who believes that once people see it is okay to go outside, there will be more to go outside and the question is, to what extent. They went time for one more. I would like to have you ta take. [inaudible]. Particularly in west africa we have two major elections this year. Thus are actually postponed to see the outcome of the u. S. Election because depending on the winds, they can go for things that it actually is condemned by the constitution. So many people are not aware of it but they are ramifications that reach far away. In the outcome of the presidency here without a measure intact, affect this country spreading i dont know how or what we can do. Knowing the division. Within those countries, trying to continue to grow that democratic and unfortunately, is dying slowly. I really appreciate your question because it gets back to something we were talking about before in terms of what makes america america. And what are our assets as a country. As americans and part of what makes America Special place to live in is the rule of law. His our values, is a moral, but had been a moral authority. But for example, regardless of how one feels about jimmy carter, when he was put forth human rights on the international platform. That spoke volumes. The countries of the world look to us and they say well, americans doing that, we should try to elevate. To model our constitution after the constitution to 1 degree or another. Every country is different. But there are the standards. And with his or sacrifice, we pay a price. I dont think the donald trump understands that. This part of the International Alliances in the network of International Relations were buildup postworld war ii. Especially that it is not or would you sacrifice that, it is hard to regain it. It can be regained over time by proving ourselves repeatedly and doing the right thing the same period of time. I do believe that is possible. But is not easy. This not a foregone conclusion and with other people or other countries around the world look to us for leadership, front ushering in the right way. How can we expect them to do the right thing if we are not. I think youll. This is a wonderful crowd coming up. Thank you for being so attentive. The me just say that all this conversation didnt reflect it. The book is quite optimistic. Its very striking. The broad trends are producing outcomes, the sense of american resilience. And whenever we go too far wrong direction, we have ways of correcting we do. So thank you for the this book. Is fascinating. I never thought about the many things in your book. Thats another reason after read it. Theyre very funny parts. So thank you very much. [applause]. Starting now, but to be in prime time.
