Signs of vitality. Of live. Not that movement that is cracking up or than its on its last leg. People are fighting and debating and arguing so strenuously it is something of value is concern here. And that is conservative movement which is still a major actor in american politics. At the same time, we have an opportunity to accept change. Leg is part of what it means to be a conservative today it not to be so resistant they wont allow anything to happen. Even edmund burr says that change is inevitable. It is just a question of being printed change. Thats would i a sneak traditional conservative looking forward to the right kind of leadership and debate and discussion, so i will come all that is going on right now. All the various strands and strains of conservatism. That is good. And coming out of that, and to be a bigger and better and i think more relevant conservative movement in the years ahead. I want to redo a quote. Mary would just go absolutely crazy if he will watching this today. He wouldbe yelling at the television. He would think its embarrassing in the situation we have with donald trump. Its not the Republican Party or the country that we knew 25 or 30 years ago. There was Susan Goldwater on march 21st, 2015. Yeah right. Well, i think there is something to be said for that. But at the same time, gold water was a practical politician. It was not just a man of principle which he was, the conscience of a conservative but also a practical person. It wouldve said, wait a minute, 60 3m people voted for the sky. Why. What is he doing. I think it would begin staying the same now pray to Supreme Court nominations, deregulation, stacked cuts, Strong Military and National Defense being built up, being concerned about trade that is not just free prepare. I think very goldwater wouldve applauded all of those things. And im pretty sure he wouldve. And at the same time, i think he wouldve said Something Like will why didnt trump news mother watches mouth out with soap. [laughter]. And make them understand that we dont need a potty mouth. So goldwater wouldve not abuse potty did how did known a sneak conservative historian as the historian of the conservatives. I dont think i am. I think the historian of the conservative movement, storage nash. There is a marvelous book many years ago now. It was intellectual history of the conservative Movement Since 1945. And that is the vibe. That is the premier that we refer to. We want to know what happened 40s and 50s and 60s up in until the. George nash, is he marvelous careful, painstaking radiant historian. So i can ambassador the historian are conservative movement. And so happens that ive written some books and biographies in a written some histories. So maybe im sort of coming up maybe from fifth or six or maybe on making my way up and this race. I didnt start out to be a historian. It really started out all of these years ago they say just right, to be a novelist. And that didnt work out so well. I wrote three very bad novels they never got published. Thankfully because they wouldve been an advertisement advertisement and then i get into political righting. Which is where i was for 20 to 25 years. And then would they said well i am burned out. Ive had it with this bring about campaigns and all that. I want do you get to the cabinet i want to teach a right. And so i went back to school and get a phd and began teaching and that is where ive been. This last 20 or 30 years. I guess have also picked up a little bit from churchville, and love that one line of his it was somebody staying what is history going to say about you mr. Churchill. And he said, i know because im going to write it. I think that i am trying to do, and a small way with my work, is to paint a picture of the conservative movement, sometimes from the inside and sometimes little bit from the outside. So the people at 2030 and 50 years from now, will be able to refer to my book and understand the conservative Movement Better and in more depth. One of the book she wrote, is reading the right books and a guide for the intelligent conservative. What are some of the books that are contained in there. Era hundred and nine books. And some of them are my favorite books, are in their red the conscience of a conservative in my own biography, goldwater which i think is he pretty good book. And bill buckley at yale, kayaks, the road to certain. I think what we tried to do, is about eight or nine different categories and the we took these hundred and nine books and put them into various stage of economics, politics, history and so forth. And what we did was to take a look, like say the road to serfdom, and then the boiler down just the page or page in. And try do you get people to see what it is and perhaps to spark their interest in it and make the pickup the whole book. And read. Actually, that little book, its only hundred and 25 pages. Or something with that. It is one of the hardest things i ever did
