Misread strangers words and actions. Many of these authors have appeared on book tv and you can watch them online at booktv. Org. Book tv recently visited capitol hill to ask members of congress about their reading list. So senator marsha blackburn, what is on your reading list . Mall come gladwell, and im just i was so jealous last week. My husband and son attended a breakfast where he was speaking, and of course ive Read Everything that he has written and followed his columns for years. So long with blink blink and outliers and the others ive new downlead on my win del, talking to strangers and just a little bit into it, but totally intrigued. Ive also made certain that i have my 2020 farmers almanac downloaded, and im looking at that. You cant beat good reading when it comes the farmers almanac. Its just i love it. And i keep track of it. Im a gardener, and love being outdoors, and so you got to have the farmers almanac. What kind of information do you get from that . Weather. A lot of weather. And if the willy worms will be thick and wooly or if youll have a hard winter or look at the thickness of the acorps and hickory nuts. You never know. In tips in living i want to back to malcolm gladwell. Hes so counterintuitive in a lot of his approach. Do you does that interest you . Is that the approach that interests you. I fine it incredibly interesting because what he does is to he doesnt take anything at face value or what you see on the surface, and probably outliers is one of my favorite books, is that he wrote, because what he does is to say, here is the premise, and this is why you should be curious about the premise, and this is how it becomes different than you may have thought it was going to be. And talking to strangers, as i said im just a little built into that, but for someone who likes to communicate and considers communication to be vital to what i do, i think talking to strangers is something that is very instructive there. Words that change minds, shelly has written i think this is like her third book, and this is another of those communication books, and you look at i think someone that comes from the sales and marketing side of things, going back to my first jobs, and selling figuring out what motivates people, words to use, how you use language. Her latest book is one that ive just downloaded, also i thought it would be a good companion read as i read talking to strangers. So ive got those two that im going to be working through. Host i hear the word downloaded quite a bit. Yes. You know, i love the fact that i can put it on my kindle and especially if there is a hard copy book that i have. Then put it on my kindle and i can read it in spare moments and not have to carry the book around with me. And there was one book i wanted to hold in my hands, when i read it because i wanted to make notes in it and that is the fabulous, fabulous, anumber one work from wow the works hour pout womens suffrage, and of course that started in new york at seneca falls, finished in nashville, august 18, 1920, and our state had a wonderful presence in the passage of the 19th amendment. The susan b. Anthony amendment, 72 year fight, and the way elainewise lays out what happened in nashville and she does so it beautifully, and having been in the state senate and knowing the capitol and knowing the Hermitage Hotel that is across from the capitol, and i could just see and envision this, to me it was a great book to read, and i have actually read it twice. Because its so easy just to put yourself in that moment. Is the hermitage still a hotel. Oh, yes, its gorgeous. When you walk into the lobby do you see the suffer yets and the antisufferrageets. I can visualize it,ey, absolutely. Its terrific. We talked to you above about bachs and often history comes up. History books. Yeah issue enjoy that. Any others on your list. One thing im doing this year is, as many people do, ive read the bible through, and ive done the King James Version and the nib, and a friend recommended using a contemporary version in reading it through, and it reads like a novel, which is just fascinating, that it reads more like a novel when you read a contemporary version. So im doing that. I will fish at the end of the year, maybe a little ahead of time. Its something i do on a daily basis. And have enjoyed that. And i like reading cookbooks. I have a variety of those that ive gone through. And continue to leaf threw cookbooks, its a tremendous way of learning history of communes and customs in different communities, so cookbooks are always on the list. Do you get recommendations over here in the senate . I know in the house when youre a member of the house, you used to share books with other members. Have you found that yet here. I have not found that over here yet, but i still get recommendations from friends who know im a voracious reader and always have something that im looking at, and one thing i enjoy with being able to download is i can download a sample. If somebody says you ought to read this, then you can download a samplele and get a little taste of it and figure out if its something that you want to put want to keep or put on your kindle and read, and then you can decide if its something you want a hard copy of. A lot of contemporary books on the trump administration, do those or any administration that happens to be in power, do those attract your attention . Im living it every day. And i am working through Public Policy every single day. I dont need a pundit to tell me what i think. To see what other membered of congress are reading visit booktv.
