Not the least of which this past week during doing your numerous interviews for her book a Tucker Carlson fan. Jackie nonprofit activities is on the georgia Advisory Council and founder and chairman to make a Difference Foundation with those living in atlanta with her husband and their children lets give a warm welcome to jackie gingerich cushman. [applause]. Okay. Thank you i am thrilled to be here today. And i started this book a little over a year ago. Im not alone because 80 percent percent of americans feel we are polarized in a danger to our company. We are structured differently that god is given as rights of individuals through the government if they dont behave properly we pull them back. So the big believer is what we are talking about today. So where we are today that only requires the political response but also quite frankly a colder response that can only be done on the ground and i know you can lead the effort. So now back up a little bit. Talking about nancy pelosi being here. And if you read the entire article. So to make a mistake it was not this district for then you have to understand is not the same district so from South Atlanta over to alabama. I live in georgia where my dad was a professor and to be truthful because he had to get a job and had two small kids but he had a job and we moved there when i was very young. I was born in new orleans all i remember is georgia. Life was church and football and thats all we did. And then we had football friday night. So my very first memory is of my dad ran for congress. But then he moved around a lot and then the sacrifices for our country but he began to understand the policy and quite frankly with the political world is a civil war. So that people get frustrated so much better than the actual civil war that we have gone through. First you win the argument then you win the vote. And then without actually winning the argument. And then working very hard so the delegation very hard but watergate happened. There was no digital tv we would call on the landline phone from the precinct. And then my dad would sit there with a legal pad and then we lost 48 percent of the vote and he lost. We worked very hard but its a very big world. Not even a traffic light. So that we went across from the original chickfila and to change the shift. And then he ran again. So now he worked two more years. Its a family event. And then in 1976 and then in the spring he notices someone named jimmy carter. And he begins to think this is more difficult is hard enough if you are republican but now the past governor running as president. He works really hard and thinks he has a shot and at the library and sees the buses pulling up and he realizes theyre not there to vote for somebody named Newt Gingrich and he was right. Remember the ground game. So he did not win again i got more percentage so he got close. So now he runs against someone else with a different opponent this time my mom stopped working for a year and then they campaigned really hard. We cant afford atlanta tv its way too expensive. We go to radios and smalltown newspapers. If you can imagine how embarrassing that was for a teenager. But i have to say the third time was a charm and he won. Persistence matters and you have to keep working. But we also learned the ground game matters. To have to make sure people are registered to vote and they can get to vote. That so we talk about winning the argument. Growing up in georgia i raise both my children in georgia. And then i grew up in a little smaller town. But then we are such a great state to understand what government can and cannot do. That there is mill in georgia that quite frankly of republicans from the news media. I know your wonderful people. So then we go to the places. And i grew up with the Republican Party i know we are loving people by the fact we constantly get aligned. And then how we combat that. So now which will transition from the seventies to hear and my father elected in 78 was murphy and lived in my dads district. And he was not very happy to have Newt Gingrich as his congressman. You are laughing. He wasnt very happy. After the 19 nineties senses they had that redistricting and now we will have it again and that they would cut the old sixth district into little bitty pieces to get rid of Newt Gingrich and he hated to have him as his representative at the time thinking he was a republican congressman in georgia but then they created this new fabulous sixth district and what happened cracks dad walks around and met everybody here in the new sixth district. That year after elections there are three additional. So we actually want more which was good. [applause] but it does remind you have the power of redistricting. So dad moves here and has a primary opponent got my mba and now i was working for the Cell Phone Company which at the time the phones are huge huge bag phone. If they were installed in your car that was amazing. And then i heard this at on the radio. Against my father how basically i will paraphrase a terrible person. I said im used to having people say its not true. We never had a limousine. [laughter] and a i had friends say they are glad he lost and that really got to me. But i will do a commercial if you think it will help because this is outrageous. So why did i did a commercial. And sure enough he won the primary. It in the great sixth district tijuana in a landslide at that time. So to talk about the republican revolution so i dont know if you saw the special on fox is a miniseries on fox nation and it is interesting because so what is think mom responsible to think about its positive its not things we would let them do. But it was positive. And with all that legislative action. And my dad had a lot of ideas. But then in the speakership. And theoretically it was a great idea. And then to talk about everything. Trust me i would know so but im not sure the Daily Press Conferences helped. That if you let somebody else control the narrative they control the points they want to say. That he learned from that. So also talking about careful persistent. And they all fail. Because if youre not careful nobody wants to play with you. Those want somebody to play with them. And then we could be more cheerful. But then the questions are i think the answer is yes. And then worth saving. Okay so you agree with all of those things. And then those that are out to get President Trump on the left. And watching the 2016 elections and watching the tv i could tell by the body language in the expressions that donald trump was going to win. [applause] did you notice that . They would get very upset. I knew when georgia should be called that i knew were those votes were required on a wide georgia isnt called. It is done. They wouldnt call. They would if somebody did Something Different but they would not admit it. He couldnt we are so upset. So we didnt stand home and cry when barack obama became president. We went to work. Thats what we do. But i think we missed an opportunity to learn. So why were they that upset . Why were they so surprised . I firmly believe in the foundation that we can communicate better as a party. That we have a lot at stake for this next election. So the framework of this when i was little it was actually news. Not for very long. And everybody has the same framework. Over the last decade i will not say how old i am that has changed. It is now opinion and social media that now there are so many channels to figure out which may or may not be right. The frankly its really confusing. And then if youre a single mother that goes to work and doesnt even have time to think about it. And then to think about that. And because of this because it is no longer news that we allowed this so rapidly that the slide into social media its really hard to come back. Not sure how to fix it but figure it out. So then there was the time cover with trump and the little girl the title had said something that you come to find out the girl was not separated from her mother. Not true her mother was deporte deported. Years later she brought her child back with her. They were not separated and when asked the father said i didnt even know she left. So maybe its mother kidnapped child without telling husband. That would be the appropriate title. Not asking a republican or a democrat but those in the middle and then they had no idea. And then to think of the picture of the child in the cage again so he was in the cage. It was a demonstration. And then their child got behind that active protests. You and i know that it is not true. How would they know . With the entertainment. Narrative i hate trumpet must be his fault. But the middle doesnt know that. Part of what the midterms and 33 hours to be dedicated to the Russian Investigation that we now know was nothing and 14 minutes about the economy. Fourteen minutes. Less than 1 percent. So incredibly great numbers for the economy yesterday. Great news about low unemployment. In and to get a promotion or arrays. How do we deal with this . So the next thing we have a social media. Also allowed to comment. If you are one of those that does that. And then allow you to feel you have a connection. I get on twitter and ac my following. Look at that. Thats a real connection. This is real connection. Coming to breakfast. And then to be incredibly convenient and highly motivating before we meet every weekend we run who helps me to have a problem . Not that with the on demand because what that means no longer these small communities that we didnt lock our door at night i rarely told my mother where i was if i didnt need to write anything wrong she would find out about it. Very rapidly. The only time i got really big in trouble i inadvertently left church one night to go to the movies with a youth group and forgot to tell her. Very loving and nurturing environment. And then to look out for each other at nasa we need to recreate today. We cannot do it alone. We must do that and community so we have to remember that we are all not the same but we still respect one another perk i will tell you why. Because what has been led to believe that they are precondition not to like us. And then to say please come and join us. We need your input and i want you to be there. What else happens in society . And 55 percent believe in religion to fix our nations problems. But a high belief in god. But i think it is religious revival. [applause] and how can you explain that . Trust me i prayed a lot with this book at 3 00 oclock in the morning. To see that in new york and churches in georgia. To that connection to people and those that they necessarily believe in. With that transition all time. There is a lot of fluidity but we have the opportunity to reach out i love you. You are a child of god just like me. I believe well have a religious revival. I think it will happen. Weve had a huge change of immigration and in 1865 only 5 percent were firstgeneration immigrants. When i was born it was a very low number now 50 percent with an additional 26 percent Second Generation so we are shifting. Yes its great to have immigrants come to the country and yes they bring a lot. They bring so many Different Things but yet quite frankly a lot of the values of the believe is the exact same that founded our country and we need to make sure we welcome the immigrants. And one of my daughters best friends she came here from ecuador and just became a us citizen. She is so excited and had worked very hard but we have to remember we are that country. We have to make sure we reach out and wrap them in our arms. That happens to have this moral opinion to have this tribalism. I hate that word tribe. But my tribe is better than yours. Whatever it is. But the problem with that and with that individualism but as members of a tribe that is where it gets dangerous. And i learned so much doing this book i cannot even tell you. And i learned a ton. Think about the friends you have and how you interact but slowly as a country not just geographically which has happened but also in the geographic areas. 54 percent of democrats and 55 percent republicans know few friends in the opposite party. So that you have no contact dont understand what they think or what they care about. And thats where we are as a country. But i know we want the best for our country and we are not communicating that in a way people understand. We can scare them to vote for us for a year or two i am concerned about my children that are 20 and 18 we cannot do this for a decade. So to understand those that care about them and america that is the next challenge. [applause] im a huge believer. I was going to my email this morning with an article and to get information out of people and for those that have a spouse for those that communicate with them but i have learned if they are ranting and raving and screaming i have learned it doesnt help for me to scream back. I was not very successful. But what i learned is actually people become more defensive thats what the article was talking about. The way to communicate with someone they understand where they are coming from. Why is that . So explain to me what is happening. But to make them feel safe and welcomed. Not saying rollover and agree no no no. But what im talking about that what is happening with them . Even if you dont agree with their position you can then communicate with them because if you dont know what they care about our faith thank you dont care about them, doesnt matter. The facts dont matter. You cannot communicate. It is so important we make sure people understand and we want to listen to their problems. Quite frankly we cannot help to solve them. So if we talk about partying tribalism. With that Bipartisan Legislation we had that in the last two years agricultural improvement act or incredible bipartisan bill. And then to tell people about this. I am just as guilty as you are. So just tell your child once. And if that works for you let me know. But we are the same way. We just cannot tell people and had to tell them so many times. You cant just tell them one time. You have to tell them a thousand different ways and i have tried to yell at my child to get them to do things its not very successful. Especially in the Grocery Store if we had a fit that we are adults. How to deal with people where we are coming from and as the polarization got worse with the first big map on tv read for republicans and blue for democrats but then this light turned red and it melted and went up in flames. So from 1976 through 2000 the colors and the map change depending on what year or network the parties would be red or blue depending on what you are looking at. Not until 2000 they became the same. That was also the big map on cnn with the bush gore win count every day the entire nation saw that map. All day every day for days i felt like this is part of the polarization issue because now its just one but the color. I saw this fortification with politics. And its now like a sport and the data backs that up. And then to be the issue but for a lot of people and with identity and who they belong to. And that transition between parties. If they say it is their party stands even if it is not. If its not about ideology but who people think they are and how they identify also that we have a lot of work to do communicating who we are we have to think about that. But what are we communicating wrong . I will challenge the last two things in open for questions. And incredibly worried about our country future but yes yes politics is important and then to understand and backup the traditional values but also we have to talk about to be candid together in the long term we have to be optimistic not only for our party but for our nation. So how i think about things so with a lot of work on grievance. And how terrible things are. Let them have gratitude and why we should be grateful. I would to live anywhere else. [applause] this is america. People want to come here legally. There is a reason they want to come here. We are a great country. Lets be grateful for that. We have a church where we believe in good and they gave us rights and reloaded them to government. I have nothing to do that. Be grateful thats fine but we cant because we are grateful and quite frankly but then to articulate more clearly to the party. [applause] i think we win best to explain to people why they are the better choice understanding what we bring to them no more grievances, just gratitude we should be grateful we have a party that makes us more clearly communicate. Im an avid tennis player im not very good but i love it i went to have competition because it makes me work and it makes me think go thats where we are tooth work and think and communicate better. Second think about the National Narrative. Optimistic and pessimistic. Im not saying we are perfect nation but we are the best. I also believe if we constantly tear ourselves down we can never move forward. So now tell your spouse how horrible they are. Tell your child how horrible they are. People believe it. It is terrible. We have an entire generation of people and unfortunately they believe it and its a travesty and we have to change it. We must confront the National Narrative to communicate to people how great we are as a nation and how great we can be together anything else is unacceptable. Not saying we are perfect but to be positive. I have spent the last 20 years i had 3 billion under me and i didnt want to do that. So i spent time working parttime i was on several boards and im very heavily involved in the community. What i found is you work with people if you find a problem i dont care the problem financial literacy, early educatio education, whatever you care about. The symphony, garden club, healthcare. And whoever cares about that same thing when you Work Together with progress and you dont know if they are democrat or republican, i will tell you what there will be democrats and you will change their mind what a republican is. Because they will see you work next to them. To care about people and you will leave their life changed you cant sit back and pretend 55 percent of us that is not okay. Even people we dont like which really is not a very good choice. So little less humility to know we have a lot of the things right but not everything right in to be part of a big system thats better than anywhere else in the world and to understand every time we are out in public we reflect not only ourselves and our country but our Republican Values and our brand one brand. I have been yelled at so many times i have been yelled at in the checkout at the store they start yelling at me because of my father. So i would get quite upset and then i would just smile. If it makes them feel better to yell at me, i dont know that you say really the daughter is nasty thats not effective and doesnt do anything. No. My challenge to you is get involved. Especially if being yelled at and remember together our country has a great future. Thank you for having me here. [applause] thank you. Do we have time for questions . We do. We have a microphone. My question is i see and hear so much vitriol to have that disparate viewpoints but what i see is the number one issue day to day is that we are calling each other names instead of calling out the issue and is on both sides. Can you speak to that because i believe we cannot be victorious unless and until we are virtuous with our mouth. Well said. Ranting and raving and how we get out of that cycle i liken it to that i have children and its so fresh in my mind that they grow as part of the process its what they do i found it really helpful if somebody is screaming at me so the point is that i can pull up some video ive had people scream at me i find it very disarming and just to smile at them because it takes them aback. But then i will say explain that to me so last week it was somebody i just met and she was very emotional and was happy to tell me about it and i asked her a question and what is the framework in about the fourth time she just quit and had no more to say. So after that we could have a discussion. But it took a while. Quite frankly we dont do perfect things and when we get yelled at there is that basic human desire to defend ourselves. And so it helps to take a really deep breath and if that doesnt think then to sing in your head. Then that keeps me entertained while not responding back. So unfortunately so many people that they dont understand that we care. I know we care greatly. We care so greatly sometimes that when things go bade dont stop along the way and quite frankly we have to stop along the way sometimes. I want to say i love my president and i love everything about him. He is real. I like the parable that you shared about speaking positive to your mate and your children to get positive results. And then to say what helps me to start off with out almost 0 percent when people found out that i was with trump. No phone calls. But the lord told me to get on his train i knew nothing about politics four years ago. So in that i pray that actually giving true history because black people number one they dont know their history because of social media changed history and i thank god i do have two sets of encyclopedia to know the in the 18 hundreds it was the republic of the democrats so when you share knowledge you can open eyes. Going to god i like to go to the scripture not just quote it. When people can see this you can walk in love but you have to walk in truth but i just wanted to share that part. Thank you so much. So the people that dont believe what you believe politically but you are exactly right. So whats happening in the truth and we are in a great economy right now. And those for bipartisan things but the real interesting thing but if you are talking to and interacting with people. They are on the trump train. But i am loving it and they are people of color. That they would not be if you had not taken that risk for what you know to be true to have an interaction. To do that with love and not anger. And then with those people of republicans of the Democratic Party we need to change that because it is very hard to expand our pace and to do exactly what you do to talk to people what is happening and then share the information. Thank you for that. [applause] the last one. I know some people who have heard the story but people are looking at how do we get more people involved . And how do you take public transit. So why would we do that . So thats how to get more people involved but then to cross party line discussion so which of those major candidates now its down to a dozen or so, which do you like best and why . Just because theyre the opposite party but others dont have a chance which is much better than stacy abrams. Or to explain why you might like them and thats a discussion point im having. Thats a great example. So if you say one stay the same way wont have that experience. It is really hard. Not to be intellectually curious but because along the way you will learn something about them. Thats a great example. Thank you. On this question . Thats a great example. Thank you. On this question . [applause] i have heard it said before they dont understand and tell that you understand that we need to show understanding of the difficult positions show them their concerns and then need them back to that position. Talk to that issue to engage people of where they are and then that of the loan that understanding of them. And then to understand things as they are. And the way that you describe that is like a working definition of race. But for me quite frankly they are all intertwined. So lets people know how much you care for them. Because they dont think that you care for them. But you are exactly right we know exactly where they are. And then explained to them this is but i hear and we need to help them go somewhere else. Thats why its called our house for so long. And we work on the health of mother and babies in job placement. That is what we do we meet people wherever they are and make sure that we have to meet the people where they are still understanding our values and quite frankly to be superstrong. And then we have to explain to them to help them understand the way forward. Thank you for that. I really appreciate you being here today my husband was watching water polo. The book is called our broken america. As well as the essential american. Thank you are gone. God bless you may god bless our great country. [applause] [inaudible conversations] President Trump is the ultimate decider. But he gets everything from Foreign Policy which we have seen recently and is his own press secretary and Communications Director and National Security advisor giving away the powers and authorities to the other end of pennsylvania avenue and one way to complain anonymously is to do something about it we are joined now on our set heret is the book how to start a revolution of the future of american politics so when did you first come onto the nationalse scene i had a political awakening. Awas a bystander of our
