Instead of rallying the whole world, rallying a coalition, maybe getting us back in the Transpacific Partnership where we could have a coalition of countries that could deal with china he has done it all by himself and america has paid a big big price for that, youve got to bring the world together to fight china. You sign tpp, what do you do . Absolutely would rejoin tpp in a heartbeat. During the Campaign Candidate trump said we cant join the Transpacific Partnership because it would be dominated by china. He is so incurious and so ignorant about Foreign Affairs that he didnt know china is not a member of tpp. The whole idea was that we would have a consortium of 12 pacific nations, some in asia and some in the americas without china at the table. It would be our beachhead in asia. All the treaties he has ripped up, even a treaty with iran he is scrounging around trying to get back to where he was at square one before he ripped up the 2015 deal with iran. I think the relationship with china has to be a complex one, we had two biggest players out there. 11 jinping i had hopes for, but he has the state owned enterprises we are getting our brains beating around the world on intellectual property, they are complete we will return to this. We are going to take a question for our online audience about automation. According to a recent brookings report accorded us jobs could be disrupted by automation, nearly every occupation could be affected. I will go to you first. What would you do proactively to deal with automation and the jobs that will be lost due to it . No one in washington least of all donald trump is doing the slightest thing about this and i agree we are going to lose 15 25 of our jobs in the next 10 years owing to artificial intelligence, drones, robotics and driverless vehicles which is going to take care of longhaul truckers but there is good news also, there will be replacement jobs with Technical Skills which will be higher wage jobs than those that are lost. We have to plan how to get the Technical Skills necessary into the hands of those workers. Iran the numbers here. It would be childs play, one third of 1 of the states budget to make those workers get Free Community college or Postsecondary Education to acquire those skills. To govern is to choose and i chose as a governor, even without federal help the states could take care of that like a mini g. I. Bill. It wouldnt be free for everybody like Bernie Sanders is, just for the displaced workers and you would get them having higher wages and a happy ending in a more affluent society. Artificial intelligence is going to create enormous wealth in the United States, making everything more efficient but federal government should take charge of harnessing that wealth for the benefit of the citizens. I tried to be a member of congress. It didnt work. I would love to be a governor. Governor wells is right, the governor has to play a role. On so many issues i believe in American Ingenuity and american innovation. You are not stopping automation. Its not stopping and as the governor said, its a good thing. It is making the American Economy more efficient and more productive. Our Manufacturing Sector is a hell of a lot more productive and efficient now with fewer workers. What does government need to do . Help retrain those workers. You cant stop the market, you have to keep the market going, you have to keep the market changing. It will lead to good things the government has to play a role as the American Economy goes through the seminal moment where we move from one industry to another. Did you buy with governor saying, that it wont cost that much, we will take care of it . States can take care of it but the government has to play a role. This is a major transformation in our economy, this automation thing, artificial intelligence, the federal government along with state governments have got to devote resources to train all of these thank you, congressman. Half of republicans believe human activity is affecting the worlds climate. Younger republicans are increasingly concerned about the environment. You just called yourself an environmentalist, what is your plan to win over the republicans who deny established climate science. To state what needs to be done which is to meet the outcome necessary to avoid catastrophic Climate Change and that is to prevent Global Temperatures from rising more than 1. 5c between now and 2050. That the injunction from the un framework in the paris accorded it is very simple. We have to put a price on carbon upstream as the wellhead for oil companies, at the loading dock, even agriculture has to pay a bit. You put a price on, written carbonate has to be either a congressional statute or it is such a National Emergency this might be the rare proper exercise of emergency powers. Will that win over Republican Voters . It is so clearly the right thing. The other thing i say is the democrats are offbase because like with the budget they are doing input. My plan will cost 16 trillion with sanders, 1. 6 trillion with biden and they talked how much they were going to spend, they dont talk about putting a price on carbon which will allow the market to lower the carbon in the atmosphere. Is climate a concern of yours . The Republican Party had better get on board or they are done. This is the issue that concerns most young americans. I dont want to sound way too basic here but the party has got to acknowledge the fact that it exists and too often republicans, this is an issue where i have moved on acknowledge that it is real, acknowledge on this for a halfbillionyearold planet, the Climate Changes and we have been on this planet how long and clearly we are impacting this environment. Just to get the Republican Party, seems that the baby step but just to get the Republican Party to acknowledge the obvious is a big step and if we dont, if we dont do this, this train is going we wont even be at the table and i dont want i have all the respect in the world for congresswoman aoc but i dont want to Green New Deal. I dont want the democrats coming in and revolutionizing the American Economy to heavy hand of government but if republicans dont sit at the table and acknowledge it is a problem thats going to happen. I would like you to answer a simple yes or no question. Would you rejoin the Paris Climate Accord . Know. Immediately. You want to explain . Protecting call industry jobs was a major part of Donald Trumps 2016 campaign. Lets take a listen. We have entered the war on clean beautiful call and we are putting and you see it better than almost anybody our call minors are all back to work and they are going back to work. Clean coal. Cold does produce a third of American Energy but is a major contributor of Greenhouse Gases and according to the bureau of labor statistics or and wind are americas Fastest Growing occupations. Under your administration with the future of energy be call, or Something Else . It wouldnt be much. That is donald trump saying im going to build a wall and mexico is going to pay for it would when donald trump says stuff like that he knew and he knows the coal industry is dying in this country and it should be dying in this country because it is being replaced by cleaner forms of energy, natural gas and nuclear. We lost 15 of our call output two years ago under donald trump. We are on track to lose 20 of our call output this year. It is a good thing. It should be replaced. It is dirty but it is at all of the above thing. We talk about a balance with every issue. Balance our use of fossil fuels knowing that the future is renewable. Governor, what is your there is no room for a or oil i with a light heart, it will be exhilarating not to be dependent on foreign oil. No room for coal or oil in our energy next. Where i get off the Green New Deal buses a couple things. One, although aoc had nuclear in her first draft, they made her take it out because it has waste. Therefore, it is dirty, therefore we are not going to embrace it. You have to embrace nuclear power, so does the union of concerned science, so do most responsible environmentalists, it should be 25 of our base. Ive been to around a lot of unpopulated counties that would love to have nukes already, another nuclear plant. A big employer, a great neighbor and im not talking about building a enormous plant on a barrier reef which is what they did at fukushima. Im talking about best pocket Nuclear Plants and they are the wave of the future. It has been done in europe with great impacts. That is point number one on the Green New Deal. The other one out of time, we are back, apologize for the technical difficulties particularly to congressman walsh. Lets get back into it. A drone attack regionally crippled saudi arabias Oil Production facilities, donald trump responded by deploying us troops to the kingdom and there are concerns of a hot war between iran and saudi arabia. How would you deal with the increasingly complicated us Saudi Arabian relationship. I would be honest with the saudis. Because republican democrat after democrat republican president after democrat president through the years have not been. Iran is the biggest threat in the least, saudi arabia is not a great guy either so i worry about with these troops us getting further involved in a region we shouldnt get involved in. Our men and women not to be home from afghanistan by now. We support israel and we have got to do what we can to encourage that part of the world to move toward a democracy but i dont like us placing resources in there, especially placing american troops. One final point, the trump administration, we are in this weird place where we dont believe what our own president says. Think about that. We dont believe what iran tells us, we dont believe what saudi arabia tells us that the rest of the world doesnt believe what a United States president says. That is troubling. How would you handle u. S. Army relationship . One thing that concerns me as he claims to be a noninterventionist but he is awful quick on sending those troops was a couple months ago he said after discussion with his National Security adviser im sending 5000 more troops to the middle east immediately. They never got there, mustve had a Second Thought or a third thought but never said what it was for. Im not clear why we are sending troops to saudi arabia to defend their oil supplies. Dont they have any troops to do i know they have a lot of weapons because we sold them all to saudi arabia. Maybe we should make sure they know how to fly those planes and fire those missiles. I dont get it. Boots on the ground to another country for regime change or to correct something we see in the other country that we dont like is the height of the Lesson Learned from the iraq war, we shouldnt do that. I agree with the congressman, our troops should have been home from afghanistan a long time ago. We been there 18 years, people say we cant bring them home now. It begs the question when . Does never work for you because that is what they mean. I would like to take a question from our online audience. The Supreme Court made samesex marriage legal in all 50 states but according to the Public Religion Research institute almost half of republicans oppose samesex marriage. You signed one of the earliest laws legalizing samesex partnerships at the state level. What do you say to members of your own party who are still hostile to it . You got to get with it. You just have to wrap your mind around that and i am so sorry, i cannot for lgbt q rights before anyone else did. I was by myself or 20 years on that. I appointed the woman who wrote the Opinion Holding samesex marriage is constitutionally required under the equal protection clause and the due process clause. It became part of the foundation for the us Supreme Court decision. I appointed a slew of lesbian judges, gays and lesbians to my cabinet, preside over the marriage of two gay members of my cabinet. Im all in on this issue. One of the first things i did was appoint a commission on gay and lesbian youth, had a rash of suicides in Central Massachusetts as a result of bullying in our high schools. A record is clear but how will you reach Republican Voters . I will tell them the story about the gay suicides and relate stories of people including mayor pete who i have gotten to know and like on the campaign trail. Is quick to say does the most important thing in his life, decided by a 54 vote in the Supreme Court. Last month the Advocacy Group glad sit you use the power of your public profile to attack the Lgbt Community. How the response . On your first question samesex marriages the law of the land and how are we going to get Republican Voters to eventually embrace it . This is one of those issues where it is going to take time and we have to let time play itself out and the answer for most Republican Voters eventually is the family. Over the next number of years seeing samesex parents parent their kids. Republican voters, conservatives i have spoken to for years on the radio value the family, the nuclear family, a together family more than anything. I think as the months and the years go by and they see that loving children can be raised by samesex parents this is one of those issues that will eventually move republican opinion. Respond briefly to the question of you used the power of your public profile to attack lgbt q community. I disagree with that. I use the power of my public profile to go after the issue and talk about the issue and try to find Common Ground on the issue. Im a big supporter of anybody, gay, lesbian, straight or transgender serving in the military. This is one of those issues, when youve got strongminded people on one side or another side pushing it too hard for the American People, instead of trying to find an area of compromise, for instance, being able to use whatever washroom facilities are shower facilities according to the sex that you identify as, fine, people in america should have that freedom to be able to do that but weve got to think about people in high school situations, other students, 17 and 18yearolds who may be uncomfortable with that. Finding Common Ground. I would like to ask both of you this question but a significant number of donald Trump Supporters back him because of his willingness to say outrageous and offensive things. Interview trump is a necessary reaction to an overly sensitive culture of physical correctness. Do you agree with that perspective . I am done. Yes. Look. It is a great time to be alive and we are divided. I have been in the business of trying to break down Political Correctness for years because i want honest dialogue. I do a podcast back home called Uncomfortable Conversations with a black radio host from chicago. He is the black guy, i am the white guy. We sit down for an hour and talk about uncomfortable issues like race and racism. How come black and white people look at the police different, how come black people dont like the Republican Party . We have these conversations because i abhor americans who dont want us talking about sensitive issues. I still believe in freespeech and i get really worked up when we tried to shut down speech we dont agree with. This Political Correctness, the cancel culture, you Say Something 5 years ago and cant get a job now . We are too centered on that stuff. Do you agree with the perspective of many Trump Supporters that he is a necessary reaction to an overly sensitive culture of Political Correctness . That is spot on for how he got elected. s most powerful line was im going to drain the swamp. Like the congressman i have always been known as politically incorrect. I spoke truth to power before it was fashionable. I felt the same way about bureaucracy in washington, used to drive me crazy. My diatribe about the budget, dont get me started about bureaucracy. That is what the current president then candidate was talking about when he said he wanted to drain the swamp. That is different from pushing back on Political Correctness. I found it very refreshing how unbelievably correct he was and generally going i remember thinking he was the most refreshing of the candidates, at least he didnt stand around on 1 foot and crane his neck about uncomfortable and look the other way the early going he was quite an appealing candidate. The problem is we know a lot more than we did three years ago about how this guy comport himself in office, he is coming apart before our eyes. Quinnipiac poll showed 70 of voters including half of republicans Want Congress to take action on gun violence. You are record saying you would loosen gun restrictions. Do you have any plans to address gun violence in america . I believe in the second amendment. There is no Silver Bullet to this issue, gun violence is down the last 30 to 40 years, crimes with guns, murders with guns, the numbers are good over the last 30 to 40 years. The problem in this country is this, these Mass Shootings. There are a lot of things we need to look at and i am a big gun guy but here is what our focus should be on. When i leave in an hour if i go to a gun dealer down the street and want to buy a gun i have to go get a federal background check. It makes sense to me if i buy the same gun at a gun show i should have to undergo a federal background check. It makes the same sense if i buy a gun online i should undergo a background check. It makes similar sense that if i buy the same gun from a friend across town i should have to undergo a background check. I think that will help but we have to take a serious look at Mental Health issues. Your plan to address gun violence . Im a longtime federal prosecutor. I worked for the fbi unit that deals with serial murders and other sickos. It is fair to say people committing these Mass Shootings are sick of it. I would favor a version of red flag laws that enable a coworker or Family Member to petitioner judge, you could get in front of a judge in 6 hours in this country saying this guy has a history of violence, exhibited violent tendencies, carry around a list of people he would like to kill, he talked about his admiration for Osama Bin Laden and spoken favorably of islamic jihad. These are trigger words. Get in front of a judge and see whether it holds up and if so, usually these guys have sick guns at home. Take the guns away by all means before something happens and that is going to come closer to solving the problem than other solutions which are aimed not at that population but at everybody. We are nearing the Halfway Point of the debate. We asked some republicans and independents what they thought of the Republican Party under trump and how it will look going forward. [crowd] relish like this one in new mexico filled with energized voters with the start of republican dreams when they lost barack obama in a landslide in 2012. The rc published not out of the other Republican Party saying younger and more diverse voters was the best will come back. They are taking a different approach because of donald trump, nobody expected at the time. Thank you very much. The president has been credited or blamed for blowing up what it means to be a republican today. On the other hand many have argued hes not a cause but a results of a schism between moderates and conservatives that has been brewing for decades. This is not the same Republican Party of your parents and grandparents, this is not the same Republican Party of Ronald Reagan or even george w. Bush. It has changed a lot. Ronald reagan had a small thing called lets make America Great, that was good. I dont like it as much. And he sure as hell didnt use it as much. We sold millions and millions of hats. Now you go to a rally everybody has a red hat, make America Great again. Many supporters of the present are left focused on Republican Values and more focused on the man himself. Being loyal to the Republican Party is strong but being loyal to donald trump is a lot stronger. Absolutely donald trump over party. I never felt the way everything i knew about donald trump. Not everyone sees trumps success as a win for the party. There is an to Republican Party. Theres a trump party. The Republican Party has to take a nap somewhere. The Republican Party as far as i can tell is gone, dead and buried and probably never coming back. Republicans are focused on winning and right now trump has taken hold of the Republican Party. We are the party of the american worker, the American Family and the american dream. The Republican Party is having major identity crisis right now. A conservative writer and commentator left the Republican Party and discussed the day after the 2016 election. Watching all my former friends fall into line behind them, people who were as appalled as i was when trump started running for president , i cant figure out who these people are. It is like invasion of the body snatchers. They had their brains sucked out and replaced with trumpian must. Republican voters since 2001 was once picked out of a crowded from rally. Look at my africanamerican over here, look at him. He said he didnt mind at first. I sat it out. Everybody around me burst into uproarious laughter because it was funny. If you werent there you would have been laughing yourself. But a steady stream of racist rhetoric out of the white house eventually drove him away from the party he had been voting for almost 20 years. I love the Republican Party because i was fed up with the way they were treating others who were not white. Today he is running for congress in california as an independent. Challengers say the president s tendency to lie and his cavalier tweet heavy approach to issues like trade and diplomacy are their main motivations. Trumps conscious supporters argue that while his style is different his actions signal a return to the party of Ronald Reagan. The insistence on conservative judges, the tax cuts, peace through strength, i was very the white house when reagan met with gorbachev, here was the leader of the big bad soviet union come to town and i think of that when i see trump with mcclintock. Jeffrey lord who has appeared on television remotely defending trump. If i thought he were a racist i would never be here. He believes the president has been true to the pillars of the party. It means you believe in limited government, small government, tax cuts, social issues, the prolife thing is melded into the Republican Party. From a republicans who have spoken out against the president it is a question of the man himself. Even those who fell in line behind him. I want to talk about Trump Supporters. I dont know who you are or why you like this guy. He is a race baiting xenophobic religious bigot. He is playing members of the public for suckers, he gets a free ride to the white house. Will Donald Trumps approach get him elected for a second term . Whether trump can squeeze out another victory or not this is a path towards political suicide for the Republican Party. If you look at the changing demographics of america this is going to be a majority minority country by the 2040s and if you are identified as the party of white racism you are not going to be successful in a majority minority country. Polls suggest donald trump would be the republican nominee but experts say to defeat his eventual democratic challenger he will need to look beyond his base. The Trump Campaign cannot just win the people who voted for the more supported them in 2016. They will lose. They have to take people who never voted for him before, never considered voting for him and moving them over. Challenges will be they can appeal to the voters donald trump has alienated. The question is how . Welcome back. Joining me is henry blodgett, welcome, hello, gentlemen, looking forward to my time with you. For now your and mister fishers good hands. When congressman walsh announced his candidacy you said you were, quote, thrilled but others were joining the fight the republican nomination but even the most optimistic. Has you at 16 when matched head to head with donald trump. It is virtually impossible for you to win the republican nomination. Have you see up after victory. I dont agree with that at all. I ahead of where john mccain was in his two campaigns which were successful in winning the New Hampshire primary. My strategy is to win the New Hampshire primary, not to play says pat buchanan did when he got 57 of the vote and even so knocked george bush 41 off of his pinks and led to his eventually defeat. 5 times in recent elections sitting president running for reelection has had a primary within the party. All five times that president lost, not in the final but they were weakened and lost in the general election or else withdrew but are going to diners and shake 200 hands at a time in New Hampshire and i get between two and ten trump voters out of 200 people whose hands i shake. There is some disconnect between the poles that are focusing on the Republican State Committee and its hangers on and those who voted in the last five republican primary elections and im reaching out not to those republicans but to millennials and women and unaffiliated voters in the crossover states and four of them are pretty early on. New hampshire, massachusetts, vermont and wisconsin. Different strategy. You are polling lower than governor wells, what is your nomination . I have to start, lets be clear, lets not mince words. Donald trump is a horrible human being. Only a very broken political system and a very divided country would produce that but here is the thing about that. Donald trump has not added one new voter into a half years, not one new voter. He has a devoted base of 35 of this country but hes going to get beat. If he is the nominee in november any democrat will beat him. How do you beat him . Heres how i beat him in the primary. When i said donald trump is a horrible human being. When i say that im tired of his drama, tired of his bs, tired of the ugly tweets, tired of the division every single day. When i say that publicly like i do as a candidate every day i firmly believe most Republican Voters, privately they believe that. The objective of this campaign is to get them to come out and say publicly what they believe privately. Lets not forget what happened today. The president is going to be impeached. This is just beginning. I would like to give you 30 seconds for a followup. Washington post found 40 of Congressional Republicans in office when donald trump was inaugurated have since retired, resigned or lost their seats. Thats a lot of turnover for a party that controls the white house. Do you think the republican brand is irreparably damaged . I think it is damaged and the president has no plans to help his fellow republicans. If you look at the actions he has taken he has made it impossible for republicans to run in suburban districts. Is just looking for an electoral 270 electoral votes for himself and doesnt care what happens to the republicans and their spending the year defending him which is what they did with nixon when he was lying to the American People and it turned out next and was lying and all those republicans were defeated by a mile. They were blown away the next year and i think they will get blown away in 2020, those Congressional Republicans. The Republican Party brand sucks and it sucks because of thing. Young people cant stand the party brand, women cant stand the party brand. People who live in the suburbs cant stand it and people of color cant stand the Republican Party brand. As long as donald trump is there that brand will suck. That is why it is so important for people to challenge him in the primary now so that we can plant our flag and say this is not who we are. Thank you, congressman. You said the turning point in your support for donald trump came after he met with Vladimir Putin in helsinki, he was widely criticized for siding with a foreign leader over his own intelligence agencies and also alienated us allies and undermine nato and a lot of people think he upended the postworld war Ii International do. As president how would you pick up us foreignpolicy where trump has left off . Helsinki wasnt the turning point for me. It was the final straw with trump when he stood in front of the world and said i like that guy. I believe Vladimir Putin and not my own people. I say often, i say every day donald trump is unfit. I believe that. I believe that because he cant tell the truth but more importantly i believe it because he is incapable of thinking or caring about anybody but himself. And so it doesnt matter about american security. He will have a summit with kim jong un if he can get a big photo op. It doesnt matter if it is a bad horrible thing to invite the taliban and to camp david as long as donald trump might get the nobel peace prize. Weve got a president who cant put the countrys interests ahead of hours. We need a president who will commit the countrys interests first. How you pick up foreignpolicy. I kind of agree i definitely agree with congressman walsh. We have to remember the president is a sick man. He is a malignant narcissist, hes not happy unless other people are losing. He is a megalomaniac, totally wrapped up in his own head, filled with fear and hatred, has to offload his anxiety every morning when he wakes up with a tweet, he has profound autocratic tendencies, he thinks he will be the man on the white horse who will save us all, he does not want to have elections and he think he can take over everything, hes a direct threat to the bill of rights and the constitution. On foreignpolicy. [laughter and applause] on foreignpolicy i would reengage with our allies, rejoin the paris record, rejoin the jc poa, i would join the Transpacific Partnership, i understand the uses of military power are selfdefense with keeping the sea lanes and their lanes open for free trade, he doesnt even believe in free trade, he has no conception about foreign policy. You ran as 2016 libertarian Vice President of candidate but shortly before the election he went on tv to vouch for the character of Hillary Clinton. A lot of republicans said they were voting against Hillary Clinton more than they were voting for donald trump. Is this a problem now youre running as a republican . I call them like i see them and i dont care who knows it. Ive known her for a long time. I dont think she is a belongs in jail. Nobody was standing up for her. Nobody. Maybe Donald Brazile from the Democratic National committee. I thought that was odd. I have known her a long time. I said i will vouch for her. It was not a political endorsement though it was widely taken as such by people who were not in the camp but that is why i did it and i would do it again because i think it is only being honest and trying to rescue someone from a bully, i despise bullies. According to a kaiser poll from this month more than half of americans have a favorable view of the Affordable Care act or obamacare, for the last eight years republicans have been looking to repeal obamacare. How would your Administration Work to ensure all americans have access to healthcare . This would be if im elected president the issue i would start with. There is no more important issue in this country than this. Weve got the American People living longer and longer and longer, that is a good thing but how we pay for healthcare for all these americans living longer and longer and longer, neither the Republican Party nor the Democrat Party want to talk about that and you have democrats, wellmeaning democrat saying medicare for all, just have the government do everything and republicans out there saying nothing because they are afraid to talk about healthcare. It would be the issue that would lead to discussion. Here is the issue. We have to take care of and make sure people in need in this country and those people with Chronic Health conditions are always taken care of and never have to worry about their healthcare needs. The rest of the American People need to begin paying for the day today healthcare costs and then look at things like universal catastrophic coverage. Governor wells, how would your Administration Work to ensure americans have access to healthcare . I would try to have americans have the option of Health Savings accounts where they could set money aside on a taxadvantaged basis to create their own plan instead of having the government mandate everyone has to have a cadillac plan and people make those decisions all the time, people by insurance with no deductible if they cant take it with a big deductible if they want their premium to go down, people make the decision to buy prescription drugs in canada, to buy insurance across state lines which they are not allowed to do now because of the government. I would want to skinny down the role of the government in the Affordable Care act and place more decisions in the hands of patients and their doctors and have people make their own Health Care Decisions instead of having that all come from the federal bureaucracy. Can i jump in . This is really important. Nobody talks about how much this is going to cost and to the young people in the audience your country right now is almost 23 trillion in debt. I will be long gone. Im not going to pay that back, you are. This country has got to have an honest discussion about how to pay off the debt. Thanks. According to pew research, half of republicans feel immigrants are burden on this country where most democrats say immigrants strengthen the country. How do you plan to talk to your fellow republicans about immigrants in the us . We need more work visas, not your. Immigrants made this country great. Is a melting pot, donald trump wishes it werent a melting pot. I wish him a lot of luck on that. I think the whole canard about these 11 Million People didnt stand in line, dont want to be citizens, they dont want to be citizens. A lot of them are people who overstay their visa by one week. The whole thing is a scare tactic by donald trump in order to stir the pot and have people hating. He wants people to hate like big brother in the orwell novel 1984. He wants everyone to be made into their heads and trump started with the muslims, went on to hispanics and went on to people of color, always has to have someone to hate. It is pure politics and the lowest kind of low. To say he is divisive is an understatement and now steve bannon says if reelected it will be four years of unrequited payback. Payback for what . This guy is unhinged. The governor is right. For trumpet is just a scare tactic but listen to me. For the American People it is a real issue. People in this country illegally and what do we do about it is a real issue. Are we a sovereign nation, do we have borders . We going to defend those borders . It is a real issue not a scare tactic to a lot of americans. The governors right. When it comes to people coming here legally the more the merrier and doesnt matter what your color is, doesnt matter what your creed is, doesnt matter what country you come from. None of that matters. We welcome you if you want freedom and opportunity. When it comes to people in this country illegally, people who come here illegally that is another issue where republicans and democrats have to find a solution because you live on the border right now, you live in texas and arizona it is easy to say and our manhattan studio we dont have a problem with illegal immigration in this country. Live on the border from and. It is a real issue that impacts americans was Neither Party is prepared to talk about it. Im going to turn the reins to henry blodgett. Hello again, gentlemen. Staying on immigration lets do a followup on that. How do you bridge the difference between republicans and democrats . How do you solve this issue . 11 Million People. We both got to give. I have a reputation as a hardliner on immigration so ive got to give and i want my borders secure. I want our laws followed but we have 11how many people in this country illegally . Almost 1 million dreamers here through no fault of their own, both sides have to come together and give a little on this issue because it is not getting better. There has to be a tradeoff between Border Security and dealing with the immigrants who are here. The biggest problem at the border is this asylum issue and that is something we have to move on a lot faster. How would you saw that . I agree with the congressman. All the people who are worried about the immigrants being in our midst deserve to have a secure southern border but that is not Rocket Science and expert say what you need to secure the Mexican Border is more people and more drones, more judges to handle asylum cases, more people to process refugees and regular applicants coming through el salvador and guatemala and honduras and that is what the experts say we need. Probably not as expensive as a 200 mile long, 200 foot high wall but that should be number one and then Everything Else is easy once everyone relaxes. Trump is just a demagogue and he did such disservice to this. All he talked about was a wall and mexico is going to pay for it. It is so much more complicated than that. We have a crisis situation, donald trump, his hardline stance on immigration has been extremely popular with a lot of his supporters, part of what got him elected and he has done things that have shocked americans and the world. Unlimited detention thomas separating families. How would you solve the actual crisis on the southern border . The distinction donald trump wont make politically is people who cross our border and enter it illegally to come into this country illegally and people who come here legally to claim asylum. You have a right from anywhere on this planet to come to our country and claim asylum. Those people we need to treat humanely and those are the people as governor wells said, weve got to adjudicate their cases the heck of a lot quicker, keep families together. Most of the people who claim asylum especially when they are given a lawyer and i bet most of your audience doesnt know if you come here to claim asylum and it takes two years or more to adjudicate your case but most of these folks when they are given a lawyer they show up for their hearings. We just got to devote the resources, money and resources for more judges down at the border. It shouldnt take two years, it should take two month. Is that your solution . Yes. Money for more people in adjudicatory positions and border agents. And drones to catch the bad guys coming across the soccer field at tijuana and the coyotes who prey on people coming across. Another question on immigration and you raised this issue earlier. Younger voters tend more liberal with respect immigration, tend to be more inclusive with respect to race and religion and voted in record numbers in the 2018 midterms. In 2012 the Republican Party itself said, quote, young voters are increasingly rolling their eyes at what the party represents. If elected president you will presumably want to appeal to younger voters. How do you get them past that . It is even worse now. Sometimes i feel like an old guy when i talk to americans in their 20s and 30s because they have got issues that really interest them like Climate Change, like the Lgbt Community, like immigration that they care deeply about and our party is so tone deaf. We have got to be honest and frank and willing to dialogue. One of the problems with the Republican Party, it has gotten so much worse under him, we dont dialogue with minority communities, we dont dialogue with the Lgbt Community and we dont know how to talk to young people. Immigration is a big issue and as long as we have a border, that border needs to be secure. That message needs to be conveyed to young people, that we have got to be more humane especially with a population like the dreamers who came here through no fault of their own. I will give you another reason we need to light up a little bit on our antiimmigrant rhetoric particularly in the left half of the country. I spent a lot of time in texas and west in the last cycle and you could not populate, you cannot staff the Agricultural Industry or the Construction Industry in texas or anywhere west of texas in this country all the way to the border without those brown people coming across that infamous Mexican Border to supply the necessary labor and it is going to happen one way or the other or those industries are going to shutdown and the business of america is quite proimmigration for this reason. Canada has a robust Guestworker Program that allows, on top of the table, many people to come in and work for tweet from its, send remittances home the us to mexico but also guatemala, el salvador, honduras, troubled countries of origin and they go home after four months to be with their families. They dont want to come here by themselves without their family and stay indefinitely. It is a hugely successful program. We should have one like it. The president of the United States two month ago told four brown skinned congresswomen to where they came from. Is it any surprise most young people think the Republican Party is antiimmigrant . Most republicans i know are not antiimmigrants, they are antiillegal. Because of trump and a lot of republican rhetoric we have done a lousy job of conflating that. Following up on that you supported back in 2016 the make America Great again campaign, said racist things in the past, you called president obama a muslim as recently as last year. How do you persuade Republican Voters and america to trust you . I helped create trump, period. I went to washington 8 or 9 years ago obsessed with the fact that we were bankrupting future generations. I was part of that tea party waved. Plenty of times in the last 7 or 8 years i got lost of the issues and i engaged like many of my tea Party Comrades did in personal hateful rhetoric some of which i got to live with the rest of my life. Knowing i helped create trump may be a lousy thing to say on tv but im going to say. Maybe a reformed gang member or reformed outlaw who understands some of what i did to create trump can bring the country together and heal the divide. Would you respond to that . It makes me nervous. If my wife thinks you are jesse james shes going to want to run off with you. I love working with the congressman and i think his head is in the right place about the present and the future of politics in the United States. Switching topics donald trump routinely rages against the media, denounces respected news organizations as, quote, fake news and enemies of the people. Recently he even blasted fox news as, quote, not working for us anymore. Everybody gets frustrated by press coverage they dont like including the. But a free press is a part of our constitution and the cornerstone of our democracy. You are in the media now. What do you think of Donald Trumps attacks on the media and how will you handle your own frustration with the media . It is important. Where does it come from. Hes not a president , donald trump doesnt think of himself like a president. He is the dictator. He doesnt respect the First Amendment, he doesnt know what the First Amendment is. Can we be real . Dictators speak that way. The enemy of the people. This isnt unusual at all. Fake news, i get it, the media is too little liberal, too conservative, i understand talk like that but for the president of the United States to have declared war on cnn, Business Insider and the rest of the media is abhorrent to everything we believe in america. Whoever the next president is, the job is going to be to unite us with our allies, unite americans at home, unite different members of the media. This guy took a divided country and is hellbent on dividing it even more. If im elected president im going to try to unite us. Amen to the emphasis on unity. I think when the president said a free press is the enemy of the people that is straight out of the handbook, the playbook of bonito mussolini and adolf hitler and many other dictators through history and it sent a chill down my spine and he has given so many additions that he wants to dismantle Democratic Institutions including free and Fair Elections one by one and not down all those trees until there is no resisting him and it is very clear that is in his head. There is a book in his house, the greatest speeches of adolf hitler which according to testimony of his first trial one of his favorite books. He is way out there and i think we have begun to see in the last two months him coming unglued and it is time for him to be removed and that is what is going to save us all. It will not be donald trump or the absence of donald trump. Follow up on the press . The president is an employee of all of us and there is a room in the white house which used to be used for press briefings but the current president decided to Cancel Press Briefings because apparently according to the new press secretary he was annoyed at some of the questions. As president both of you commit to using our collective press Briefing Room in the white house . Yes and attending the White House Correspondents dinner. Thank you. He is a child. If you Say Something nice about him he likes you and if you dont he doesnt. I am pretty outspoken. I love the. I believe in total transparency and i will invite the media into the white house all the time. Thank you, we appreciate it, we in the media. This will be the last question of the evening and we will go to closing statements. You both have made very impassioned compelling arguments why this country should effectively elect donald trump and nominate and elect you but you have a problem. In a recent speech donald trump bragged about the loyalty of his supporters. We have the greatest base in the history of politics or i wouldnt be here. With all the things i have done they never wavered. Can you believe it . Anybody else would be down to 2 by now. Donald trump famously joked that he could shoot somebody on fifth avenue and wouldnt lose any voters and seems to have a point. No matter what he says or does his Approval Rating does not seem to drop much below 40 . What is your plan to break through that . One of our viewers described blind devotion to donald trump. By trying to convey two things, that this country cannot handle four more years of his bs. The country will be endangered period and henry, i firmly believe like i know bill wells believes, deep down most republicans know that. They are afraid to say it. They need an alternative. The other message i want to convey to Republican Voters this next years donald trump hasnt done squat for you. Donald trump hasnt done anything. The governor talked about he was going to drain the swamp, he is the swamp. The most corrupt president we have had in this nations history. All hes done is enrich himself. All he has done is go to his golf courses, have members of foreign governments day at his hotels in middleclass americans who put their faith in him in wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania, these tariffs are killing them and for the first time we are beginning to lose manufacturing jobs in michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin. It is a big time job. He hasnt delivered for them. You have likened donald trump to the emperor with no clothes. That is a reference to a fable about a leader parading down the main street wearing nothing but his birthday suit and so brainwashed his subjects that everyone thinks he is wearing beautiful clothes. How do you plan to show Republican Voters are emperor has no clothes . He has pretty strong support among a segment of the electorate which is somewhere in the 30s between 30 40 . I tend to think that will drop. It is not going to grow. Thats not a majority or even close to a majority. Very hard for me to see how he can recover and grow the base that he has to win the election. Beyond that i think it is going to be a tough 6 months and 12 months for the president partly because he is being called on the carpet now through the impeachment process and they are going to be daily very bad bits of news for him, the house is not going to go out of its way either in the house or the senate to gild the lily bear. They are going to say what donald trump has done and what it has done to the American People and that will be a political brief and it will be hard to disregard because will be on page one of the newspapers every day between tomorrow and the election. I think he has a hard road ahead of him. Before we end tonights debate we invite you to give the closing statement right you explain to america and the world why you should be president. You have one minute. I think Business Insider. This is great for both of us and for the country. Youve both seen tonight from me in the congressman that there are tried and true republican conservative policies that we would like to see deployed by the party in washington. It could be conserving our Financial Resources as with the budget, conserving our precious Natural Environment as with Climate Change, could be conserving the dignity of all americans which mister trump wants to undermine depending on what Minority Group you belong to and most important for my point of view as a libertarian, conserving the precious individual liberties of all americans and so i think we would like to see those adopted by the Republican Party. It is a right of center country. We are not left of center like many of our european friends and i think this is been a terrific evening and so my closing wish from this night forward, let the dialogue continue. Thank you. Congressman . [applause] i end where i began. A very broken political system put a horrible human being in the white house, absolutely horrible human being. We can do better. We have to do better than a president who tweets ugly insults every morning at the American People. We have to do better than a president who lies to us every time he opens his mouth. We have to do better than a president who has 0 respect for the rule of law. This guy cant get reelected. We have said hes destroying the Republican Party, forget the Republican Party, four more years of him, this country is in danger. I think most republicans feel as i do about trump and what im trying to do is to get them to be brave enough to come out and become public with what they know privately. If youre willing to be brave and say i feel this way about trump, tired of the bs, im coming out go to joewalsh. Org and be brave. Thank you, Business Insider, you rock, thank you. That concludes Business Insiders 2020 president ial primary debate. I think my colleagues, thank you to the candidates, governor bill wells and congressman joe walsh, thanks for watching us on facebook, join us businesszoobainsider. Com.
