Treaty and that treaty contained a specific provision that expressly states that we shall have a delegate in the u. S. House of representatives whenever Congress Takes provisions for the same and it was earlier in 1785 speaks about the deputy but 1835 treaty is the most clear. Our 1866 treaty which is the last treaty that we had with the United States reaffirmed our prior treaties. Both of those treaties ratified by the senate and were signed by president andrew jackson. And so, that is the background and basis for the treaty rights. Fastforward to the Cherokee Nation tribal constitution which has a provision that requires the principal chief to appoint a delegate to serve in the u. S. House of representatives and for the council to confirm that delegate. Recently, the chief appointed me and the Tribal Council unanimously confirming. We are now inim dc and working with leadership in our delegation and a member of congress to figure out the framework. Host have you formally ceded by congress . Guest no, we have not been working on the framework. We want to exercise our treaty rights and for us to fulfill our end of the bargain. We are nowow here working to wih sure they fille their end of the bargain. Host why did it take so long to get to this point . Guest people need to understand even though the treaty takebacks to 1835 if you get turkey history from that time forward there are large spans of time in which we were not allowed to exercise our right to selfgovernment by the government of the United States and its only been since the 1970s in this modern era that weve been able to exercise our sovereignty fully self govern and elect our own chief. My father was born in 1909 full blood cherokee died in 1996 but most of his life he cannot vote for a chief of the Cherokee Nation or vote for Council Member to present him at the legislator. You can understand why during those times we just werent able to exercise those rights. Now in 2019 we find ourselves in a position of strength, economics and come up little strength and we are reaching back to these a treaties which e still valid in asserting our rights. Host when it comes to the participation of congress was a quick participation when he made this call or did it take time . Give us the timeframe. Guest we made the announcement a few weeks ago and the council of the Cherokee Nation unanimously confirmed him and we reached out to members of congress so she has not been exceeded yet but we fully expect that to happen. The very basic message that it will take two leaders in the capital is that we just want the United States to keep its workt were asking to make good on the promise they made in 1835. Host what is the response from members of congress to this process youre trying to get done . There has been overwhelming support. A lot of questions but more questions about how to get this done and we use the u. S. Territory mechanism as the template for seeding me or do we look at distinctions between us versus u. S. Territories where our right is treaty based so we want to work collaboratively and we have a lot of in person meetings this week specifically to talk about what this looks like. Overwhelmingly in National News both sides of the aisle everyone is saying we should honor our treaty rights. Host i was going to ask if this was bipartisan and yes, it is. Im overwhelmed by that. That kind of message because tribes always wanted obviously, the treaty to be honored. Host having heard from both pesuker pelosi and leader mccarthy . Guest Speaker Pelosi issued a statement indicating a willingness to look at this issue saying we want to honor our treaty rights. Host our guests are with us until 9 15 to talk about this effort and concerns. If you want to ask questions democrats 202 7488000, publicans 2,027,488,001, independence 202 7488002, 202 7488003, chief, remind people how many members or how wide is the representation . Guest were the largest tribe in the United States in our territory is in northeastern, proximally 14 counties and we have cherokees allll over the United States but that is where we are located. We are in a position today where were involved in businesses creating our own Revenue Streams and lots of jobs we create a lot of opportunity for people committees back in northeast, and having a big impact and is funny to bring our impact. Host when you get to congress what top issue for you amongst the Cherokee Nation . Guest appropriations. Appropriations has to be you know, because of that responsibly between united l states and the Indian Tribes a lot of federal dollars flow to indian countries and we rely heavily on that but these are not handouts. These are directly related toell the promises that were made by the United States in treaty and so theres an actual, real operation. Unfortunately, about i now present of that funding the flows into the countrys discretionary funding so in times that shutdown and seek sequestration and services that we provide our citizens suffer and the poor tribes suffer. We are looking at appropriations and theres a bill in bipartisan in congress that was have advanced appropriations within the bureaus Indian Affairs and Health Services but it would ulleave out programs that the federal Distribution Program at usda for indians because the program is discretionary whereas the Food Stamp Program is mandatory and so i think taking the steps for advance preparation ultimately looking for in striving for mandatory funding would be number one. Host do you just represent the Cherokee Nation or other types as well . Cherokee nation. The treaty was signed between the United States and the Cherokee Nation so my job is to upset the governmental interest of the nation but likean many of our champions on capitol hill that represent our districts we lean on them to represent iything generally and certainly feel that i could be an extra seat the table and make my voice known as well be one chief, aside from operations what are the other priorities for the nation when it comes to representation in congress . Guest from time to time their land title issues. Just last year we got revealed an antiquated land title law on the books that was designed to destroy cherokee land titles. Those are some issues we work on if indians with Child Welfare we were on that but any issue that affects our interests but they are broad and they range from the appropriations which is the number one opportunities to contact the government and that sort of thing. Its a wide array of things. Natural resource issues certainly but back to a point that kim is dismayed i will tell you tribal leaders that reached out to me in the Cherokee Nation have expressed their support. Thats because we live in a day and age where tribes understand we need a degree of solidarity so kim will represent the Cherokee Nation that had a career has been dedicated to the interest of indian countries broadly and is well suited to perform that role. Host under the Obama Administration scope out what else youve done in your career be too well, i work for nearly 12 years for the house of representatives and oversaw the congressional native american caucus and cochaired by congressman [inaudible] of michigan encouragement jd haworth first and later representative tom cole. Wide range of issues educating members of congress writing testimony, drafting legislation, drafting for speeches Dear Colleague letters, you name it. By the time i left the house side for nearly 11 years the house became a champion of indian issues and not a single anti indian measure went to the house anymore and it had been a problem previously. We were able to get a lot of increase appropriations and build signed into law, too. Eventual led to the appointment in the Obama Administration as a Senior Advisor on the name of american afford bears of the white house and policy council. I will say i dont want to leave without because it supported but when i worked on the congressional native american caucus i did work on both sides of the aisle and the only way i thought we could collaborate to get things donew. Host called lineup for both of you. From randolph in texas for democrat mike, you are on with our guest, good morning sweetie good morning. Ch yes, id like to ask the chief how many [inaudible] are left on the North Carolina town, i believe of the original trail of tears how many acres still remain with the original reservation in North Carolina . Guest sir, i think referring to the boundary in the homeland of the eastern man or territory of the eastern bank which is a different cherokee tribe. I apologize i dont have the acreage at hand but that is a separate federally reckon i tried very much on the same for people who existed from time immemorial but a different type. Host hollywood, florida, republican line, although. Caller hello. Thank you for taking my call. I would like to point out to the cherokee indians today they have turned their back on the descendents of the freedmen. The freedman were there africanamerican slaves that were part and became part of the Cherokee Nation following the civil war the Cherokee Nation agreed with the United States government they would take care of the freedman and their descendents in perpetuity and that cherokee indians have turned their backs on those descendents, the vast majority of whom have indian blood in them. They have violated that treaty and so with all due respect this a lot of hypocrisy going on this morning by these two individuals. Th thank you. Guest i appreciate the call but without respect you have a sketch of history that is accurate and youre completely wrong on the current state of affairs. He is referring to the treaty of 1866 which can referred to earlier. Since 2017 we have had full citizenship for cherokee freedman our secondary estate of the Cherokee Nation at the time and kim was and still is our executive director of Government Relations and we are fully engaged and then fully engaged now on hernd treatment citizensp as i believe is right and what the caller said is factually wrong. Host part of thehe treaty article seven turkey nation having already made great progress and civilization in deeming it important that every purple laudable inducement to be offered to people to bring their condition the factual manner and write security done in the treaty submitted that they shall be entitled to a delegate in the house of representatives whenever Congress Shall make provision for the state we are talking to that delegate. Once you get seated are you sign in office and remind people of the powers he will have as a delegate . Guest if we use that u. S. Territory template as the basis to form the authorization for my seat then delegates get to vote in committee and introduce legislation and can make a cosponsor legislation and offer amendmentspo and voting committe speak on the floor of the house and they cant vote in the f house. Typically, congress in the legislative branch of appropriations authorizes appropriations for congressional offices for offices in dc intersect offices so if reason that template then that will be the model used for me but again i dont want to get ahead of ourselves and wer looking at the exact replica if it looks like something else. Host the committee on the privations or are there other committees your looking forward to serving on connect. Guest looking at who are champions are on the outside Judiciary Committee because thats a justice issue. The violence against womens act and issues regarding missing women and peoples generally and also ways and means and those are big committees, as you know, we have consented incentives for economy in Indian Country to benefit our partners and so obviously were looking at text and legislation out as part of my current job. Host this is from james, republican line, in georgia, go ahead. Caller thank you. Good morning. [inaudible] we have a museum here and some grounds around it and we honor the sequoia for the creation of the alphabet and my great, great grandmother on my father side wasre of the eastern ban of the cherokee and i understand it said that but at one point it was a few years back that they were talking about building a Council House down here on these grounds and i was wondering what became of that . Thank you very much . Guest im not familiar with that. Without reservation in northeast oklahoma we will build a Council House outside of our capital so perhaps it was something to honor the history in the and maybe that was post, im not sure. Host from florida, richard, native american. Richard, hello. Caller hello. My grandmother was one half cherokee and has had some property in the oklahoma territory but it was granted to her by the government and my mother unfortunately, she was orphaned along with four of her other siblings at the age of six. They got sent to the baptist home in Oklahoma City but my question is really what happened to the property that was granted to my grandmother and i have no idea what happened and how to go about finding out what happened to that property. That was my question. Host thank you. What about larger interest of property . Will not be a concern of yours . Guest sure, it relates back to the question that we just had that the Cherokee Nation along the tribes have very unique federal law that applies to us eand our land allotment. Unlike other tribes in the country that have Trouble Trust properties are tribal restrict the land the indian land owner wants the Blood Quantum to fill below half but that land fill is a simple title and in that outland was lost and ever to be part of the family ever again and so thats part of the law we corrected at least with respectt to we remove the Blood Quantum restriction and our delegation one of these and administration supported the president signed that into law but theres still a lot to do with regard to that lost a lot of refinements, too. Youre still building up our homeland as well. You know, within our own jurisdictional area we also look at other properties to acquire and have land taken into trust by the federal government for specific uses whether to build a hospital or clinic or economic pursuit we might use that as well. Host do you want to add anything, chief . Guest the caller is calling about an era afforded for folks to remember the allotment era held in common was allotted and thats the point i made earlier that so much of our history has been under the thumb of federal indian policy that has suppressed our ability to exercise our rights for selfgovernment. You live in a nation can do that and we are thriving in asserting treaty rightsgo and thats the current state of affairs of the Cherokee Nation. That history is something we ined to remember but what is happening now is very encouraging for the cherokee. Host here is john in texas, independent line. Caller good morning. Id like to say my great, great grandfather ran away in the early 1800s from a family in tennessee and adopted by chief [inaudible] whose name was sam houston and i want to thank you for stand up for your rights and wish i could do more and be there with you but we stay in touch with the alabama [inaudible] close to huntsville and thats all i wanted to say. Guest i want to think the color for those words. Host bruce in denver, colorado, independent line. Caller yes, glad to be a guest on here. I just had a quick question. Theres all the talk about illegal immigration and everything and im not trying to stir the racial pot too much but i the one to ask because im sorry to put it this way but as we, im getting choked up, i hear a lot of the caucasian folks talking about. [audio difficulties] host i apologize that but youre breaking up. If you want to try to call in again i think your connection was breaking up from white plains, new york this is james. James youre on with our guest. Caller hello. Good question. My wife is 70 years old but has American Indian in her and we been trying to figure out how to get recognizedol and i was wondering if there is some via theou could help us internet. Guest thank you for your call. Typically what is most trouble is if you have some Family History that relates back to a very specific tribe and you will have to go through that tribe travel registration department. Every tribe has the right to determine their own citizenship standard and so this is not the general standard for every tribe has its own unique specific standard and they usually require some evidence or some nexus to that tribe their roles or however they determined the citizenship that you will have to prove. Unfortunately, if you dont know which tribe you connect to and you dont have that information and evidence available to research with the tribal requirements would be it would be difficult today to try to find that out. Host president s have the power to declare National Monuments and so much land it will is that something you like to see change or is there something that needs to be changed with the current proce process. Guest i think the current process is interesting because we seeinli presently was going n hawaii and we see i think more competition with tribes be more balanced of interest with the tribes and i think this is one of the areas that is presently our champions in congress are looking at in the congressional native american caucus and such and the committees of jurisdiction are looking at but just hearing ites presently when you look these issues ourselves you know that when the federal government is involved in these designations any country has to be involved at the table and has to be there as well because theres so many differentunun cultural significance given the country. Host chief, how much then does the federal government consult the tribes making theset decisions . Guest it varies from agency to agency. Some agencies are better than others but we are constantly engaged in dc. Can i come to dc often and me with federal officials out in the field. So far weve done is we work outside of the congress and outside the federal agencies and we will have c some inside the congress so hearing her give that explanation to your s. Question i think would show to the country anyone watchingng le him is suited to be delicate for the Cherokee Nation. Host democrat line we hear from janie in oklahoma. Caller hello. Yes, i just have a question but my family was a member of the western ban of cherokees arkansas, missouri, are they no longer federally recognized . Guest that organization you described has never been a federally organized tribe. I think its important for folks in the country to know there are three federally organized tribes, Cherokee Nation, eastern ban of cherokee indians and the united to a ban and theres a lot of different organizations that claim jerky ancestry but those are the three federally recognized tribes. Host south dakota, good morning, thank you for calling your on with our guest good morning. Yes, i would like to send a warm thank you and good morning to both of the representatives. Also, id like to thank them fol standing up and for running for their positions and representing us as tribal people. Im from the [inaudible] tribe and have a question for you. Do you think that most of the tribes could form a unity with each other, an agreement amongst all our other 556 federally recognized tribe that will make5 a difference for where we need to be in congress . Guest kim may want to take a spray but no we both but of alla the National Congress of American Indians in the Cherokee Nation is involved with that organization which is a way to take the views of the tribes and adrian country is not a monolithic we abuse on the fittings but there are so many things we have an interest withs land title issues, preparations so that is a vehicle and we mays have other thoughts. Guest i would just ahead because there are so many different tribes in the northwest to the southeast all states we allted have varying interests from water rights to hunting rights in such a because these interests are very there are regional tribal organizations that have performed as well as the one here in washington dc which chief just mentioned but there are also issues specific organizations whether education or healthcare in those organizations also exist in so through those organizations is an effort to try to create unity among the tribe on whatever the National Issues are and we work closely with those organizations specifically and probably especially the issues to the host 202 7488000 democrats , 2027488 is 1 republicans, 2,027,488,002, independence and what the state of healthcare on tribal lands and what needs to be addressed . Guest a couple of things. A number one concern is what will happen with the Affordable Care act. Efforts to declare it unconstitutional the reason i mention that is because included in the Indian Health care is a law called the Indian Health care improvement act and in thah law was a permanent reauthorization and thats the whole authorization and whole authority for in the Healthcare Delivery systems in that law would cripple Healthcare Systems in Indian Country. We monitor that. Closely and we are educating our members of congress because i hope the congress would provide allegedly the response if there was any way or that portion of the law was declared unconstitutional. The other piece is our Healthcare Facilities are crumbling. Theres a huge backlog on construction. Getting our construction dollars up so the hospitals has a chance to better quality of healthcare deliveries to their citizens weve been fortunate that we worked closely with that Indian Health service and have a joint venture with themly when teehee is seated when kim teehee is seated, she can speak to those issues because this with the United States keeping its response ability. Host peter. Instead, new york. Independent line. Caller yes, i am on. I have a question. One, what does your state due to help you out for the Cherokee Nation . Caucasian, and i think there was a missing justice the people that came to the americas and wiped out the indians there is nothing i can do but support the natives. I lived in alaska for 40 years. I had many, many friends of the eskimos in alaska. So, i am familiar with native tribes. Could you tell me, does your nation meet with all the other indian nations to try to represent the United States . In other words, to try to get into congress and the senate, and the president , to get things past as a whole group of indians where you have one voice. Host got you, color. It, not onlyoke to is it that national organization, but it is specific issues like health care. We are leaders in indian countries on those issues. Tribe leaders across the country participate and more and more we are more effective than we were a generation ago. , would you hade anything . Guest i think chief hoskin said that wisely can with regard to the state issue, we have partnerships with our states when it comes to car tax so that our citizens can have the affixed nation car tag to their cars. We have hunting and fishing agreements with the state. We have lots of other agreements with the state. Forth withg back and the state on a particular matter, but we look forward to collaboration with the state and typically look at the agreement on a look at how we get along. We do get some state funding. Arthur. Michigan. Democrats line. Caller i am of african descent and cherokee descent. I have been researching i frontn enrollment form in of me. I called the oklahoma tribe. They treated me like i wasnt a child of god. I do not understand the trail of tears. The trail runs from the carolinas for the eastern band right through southern mississippi where my great grandfather was born and my grandfather was born. They were part of the dolls roles. Now i cannot find that on the computer. I had to call the bureau of Indian Affairs because you are not recognizing the africanamericans that are part indian. We addressed this earlier, but with respect to dissent descendents of friedman, there are they are full citizens. Im very sorry the caller had ie bad experience calling assume our tribe he said oklahoma. If he has an enrollment form and he asks for the chiefs office, well make sure he gets the treatment he deserves. Host what is the process of enrollment . Guest it varies by tribe, but it is chasing back to a base role. It is a turn of the 20th century census of cherokees living in what was about to become northeastern oklahoma. If you can chase back traced , then youat role establish yourself as a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. We have close to 380,000 citizens right now. Host from oklahoma and musky muskogee. Oug anyway, i want to i useate the tribe constantly alth not constantly, but a lot. I have some very good doctors and they do very good care. I guess i will talk about the last caller that called in about indian black man who was also native american. People that are not on the rolls, but they are just as much indian, if not more, than i am. That reminds me of senator warren. She is from oklahoma, as i am sure you know, and it is very muchble that she is as indian or more than i am, but it is possible her data grandpa could not get on the role. Host thanks, caller. Guest cherokee citizenship is clear under the law. 380,000 people can do that. Host from our line for democrats in indianapolis, jeff, hello. Getting frustrated. Native americans and african americans, both groups were victims of white supremacy. As far as i am concerned, andrew trailn, a sponsor of the of tears and a proponent of slavery, which led to the mexicanamerican war, he is a murderer and a genocide us. My great grandfather was a full cherokee, he met an africanamerican woman, and reduced my grandfather. Victim of the the european extermination machine. Lets get that clear. To thei will just say caller to the audience at large, we understand that our treaty of 1835 we lost a quarter of population due to forced removal. One way to make that right given all of the ancestors i know but soly were affected, many families to this day were affected by that history. That the caller was just speaking of. One way to make it right is to fulfill our treaty. We have a provision in our treaty that was designed to prevent those kinds of policies from happening again. Host how much support you think youll get from fellow members of congress on that effort . guest my hope is we will work collaboratively. Host how do you make that case to members of congress . Guest the issue is will the United States keep its word . Im a proud cherokee. Im a proud american. I think this country is at its best when it keeps his word. Willimple proposition is they do congress do what is best. Will bedo, kim teehee seated and she will be very effective. Host mike is next. Independent line. Caller first to the caller who said his Interest Rate is africanamerican and indian, he doesnt know what he is he is american. Welcome. In any event, Economic Development regarding the native american potentiality, i was wondering if you ever thought about using Renewable Resources to basically set some nation centuryto act as a 21st saudi arabia and sell electricity to the United States. You guys could maybe make a dollar or two there. Love you, good luck. Guest we have done so much to from afy what we do business standpoint, it would not surprise me if we got into the areas he talked about. We have been leaders are Renewable Energy bringing solar capability to the Cherokee Nation. I announced a plan to put her in Million Dollars into homes for elders, but also go to 30 million into homes for elders, but also go into the Community Buildings that they live. We are leaders on that subject and will continue to do that. Host kentucky is next. Polk. Democrats line. Ifler i was just wondering the lady has heard of a book thisnd there gentleman was a firm trapper from london and came over and live with the cherokee, lived with them for a long time, went as far inland, and said as he was concerned, the cherokee seem to be descended from israel and had a lot of practices and their culture that the jews have. My question is couldnt you find out . I am not familiar with that particular book, but our tribe has a wealth of culture of our own. Has stopped dances, ow how wild dances people are familiar with. Host do you think people still hold those misconceptions . How to do it that day after day . Guest they after day it can be challenging. We are the largest tribe in the most misunderstood tribe because of that. We had a guest over the labor day holiday. I was able to take into the stop dance and our spiritual leader. My parents are cherokee first language speakers. There is a wealth of culture, history, and faith, and medicine and dances that still live within the Cherokee Nation. We do honor and respect and cherish, and try to preserve those. Host chief hoskin, the misconceptions . Guest misconceptions are everywhere. We do try to combat them. One of the ways we do that is reach out to cherokee citizens across the country. They know their history, but when the Larger Community sees us, but, that says something. Every spring we come to washington, d c, to do some of the work that kim teehee do, but we also go to the National Museum of the American Indian and celebrate our culture. People from all over the world come to that fine museum and get an idea of what cherokee history and culture is. From california. Lets hear from elvin. Caller can they do dna to find out who is really native american to see who should get treaty money . My mother is fullblooded native American Indian . Could they not use technology . Caller two things guest two things. Citizenship. Guest senses of cherokees the other is this misconception that there is a treaty money back out there and theyre very important rights and obligations in these treaties and again like its back to the basic reason that we are here is that we believe we want to fulfill our obligations under the treaty and the u. S. Should do the same. Host from tennessee, independent line. Caller yes, sir but i live in tennessee but i was raised in tulsa, oklahoma, the home of the five civilized tribesra and when the pilgrims arrived in america their children were not put into cages and the native americans welcomed them andnd the republicans of today could learn a lot from the pilgrims and the native americans of yesterday and they would be better because of that. Thank you for your time. Guest i would suggest both partiess and leaders in the city could learn a lot from how the Cherokee Nation governs itself. Live a balanced budget and provide for our people based on priorities and i think taking that leadership to washington dc in the form of our delicate cam will make the city a better place. Host kim, the way you talk about being seated is this a certainty or possibility at this point . Guest i firmly believe its not a matter of if but when it will happen. We are patient and if its notit owing to be sued we will keep working at it. Ll we feel like its the right time and its the right time because we have a more educated congress than theres ever been before we got a Permanent Committee on the senate side in the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on the house side and the National Resources committee we have the subcommittee on indian and alaskan unneeded affairs and congressional native american caucus with citizens of Indian Tribeses that are sitting congrs people and so, i dont think we have had a more educated congress. Congress has had approved tougher lawsdo c than what we ae asking them to do with this treat right. I think we can get it done. We want to work collaboratively with both sides of the aisle and hope to get that done. Host from North Carolina, republican line in plymouth, david, hello. Caller hello. [inaudible] [inaudible] we are trying to reinstitute that colonial native population in trying to find information on history of that great chief known as the great negotiator. And then what we can do to reinstitute guest i would appoint anyone interested in that subject to the adderall recognition process. We are a federal wreck and i strive with a long standing since this country was founded we were here before this country s founded but longstanding relationship with this country so as part of what the federal redistricting process is about and we want to ask for that. Host so, as far as theho process you are a delicate seeking recognition from congress so what are you working on now and what does it look like for a shortterm timeline of what might happen . Lo guest on the short term we are in dc this week and i am meeting at the member level with both sides of the aisle and leadership to chairs of committees that could have Authorization Authority over this with members of our delegation and so we are looking at everything from legislative enactment to even looking at osven that the treaties were ratified by the senate and signed by the president and are still in full enforcement effect. There is an administrative possibility with an extent. Host letter to sylvia in virginia, republican line. Hello. Caller hello. I want to ask a question. I get information from churches asking for donations and i do not know if you noticed if there credible and i like to donate and im not sure, especially from the catholic church. Are they credible . Are the people in that much dire need that they say they are . Thank you. Guest i dont know what specific churches she is talkin about. We have back home we have churches that take care of folks in the community and a nonprofit foundation, turkey nation foundation, folks are welcome to donate to that but it varies among Indian Country in terms of the state, affairs and general welfare. As a Cherokee Nation weve done a good job with more work to do in terms of developing the economy to make sure their jobs for folks and elders are taken care of but i would say were in a relative position of strength thankfully. Host from Oklahoma City, maryland, you are on with our guest. Caller thank you. I am a descendent of the five tribes association, cherokee citizen since 2006 and i was a litigant on the lawsuit that dealt with the cherokee freedman and their treaty rights because theres been two or three calls about the cherokee freedman status and i wanted to go ahead and come in and assure anybody out there that is hesitant to support the Cherokee Nation, having a delegate in congress, the freedman people are getting their treaty rights and forced. Chief hoskins, when he was the secretary of state worked hard to fulfill the letter of the treaty and the spirit of the treaty so far as the 1866 treaty so i hope those out there that are hesitant because they think the tribe is not the tribe is not in step with the treaty but as far as the turkey freedman but that is no longer the case. That was the case, for instance, during mr. Smith chiefdom but at that time it has passed and now the Cherokee Nation is Going Forward as a nation with freedman n and the other adopted classes. Thank you very much. Guest is that it no one could see a better. Shes talking about freedman and descendents of slaves and of some cherokees before thehe civl utwar. After the civil war treaty of 1866 that they would become or have the rights of native cherokees and that has been long history of this agreement and litigation during my time in sector estate in my time as chief moving forward full equal citizenship. Host sorry, go ahead. Guest if i could this is come up a few times, 1866 treaty keeps getting brought up in the context of reaffirming prior treaties but also in the context of the freedman litigation but i want to mention something important because we have heard some folks ask is that treaty still alive and valid . Yes, it is still valid and we have that federal court case which is a recent court action in the past two years we have about five federal cases in recent years that have directly tied to the Cherokee Nation to those treaties and even thing Cherokee Nation is updated to comply with our own treaties, too. I think thats an important historical fact they are because those trees those recent court cases have the proposition that they are in full force and effect. Host cam is the delegate for the u. S. House of representatives for the Cherokee Nation also joined by the chiefr of the Cherokee Nation. Thank you for the conversation. The senate about two gavel in meeting to see the company and shortterm funding in the federal government past the end of this month depending on the senate agenda. Take you live down to the floor of the senate. The chaplain, dr. Black, will lead the senate in prayer. The chaplain let us pray. Mighty god, hear our prayer. Because of your mercies, give us the wisdom to strive to please you. Continue to effectually work through our lawmake
