Unclaimed by any nationstate. In the technology of creating little animations that would be stalled up miniature countries at at hand and we are starting as soon as we get it. At hand. What at been done. Built off the coast of thailand in the beginning of 2019. 13 miles off the coast. It was outside of the territorial waters and the key victory that it costs less than the average american home. So the hundred and 50000 for the first pilot project. So this got people very excited like the average middle class american could afford it. We have invested interested in underwater restaurants and we can look at the windows at the aquarium. Looking out at the ocean. People could come in. Now we are negotiating its other countries around the world to sort of host a little startup societies on the ocean to begin colonization. Would somebody limit that are live there at the residence . For two months because they went out and confiscated that area and my friend fled and have lunch now. They are safe. But they have thought International Conversation about see setting and its caused it to be invited to other nations. Reaction was unique reaction, another variable i would give, maybe original is sea land which is off the coast of england which went out and declared sovereignty. They remain sovereign. They are not recognized, so england and the european nations sort of tolerate them but they make like 600,000 a year selling stamps, passports and they have offered safe haven to my friends, so theres a lot of nations that would be tolerant of startup societies off their shores and hope to go negotiate with existing countries. Its not accepted anywhere is it . Well, no. As far as i know. But people so love the idea of freedom and doing something new that they are willing to bypass, buy stamps, willing to buy titles of nobility, dukes and lord of sealand, they do quite well for themselves by just sort of being defiant startup nation and we would like to accelerate that platform. So how was the property off thailand built and how does sea land exist . Abandoned sea port that we dont use anymore and taken over by pirate radio guys, some of the first people to rock and roll in england in defiance of the bbc, pirate radio thing going on and movie about it. But the thing thats unique about the sea land built by ocean, its actually floating so the technology is best described, think of wine bottle, if you can tow a wine bottle out of the ocean and flip it up right, the bottom is filled with sand and one fifth above the ocean, tinny house on top of it. Theres so much below the seas that youre stable as fence post. Victory is interesting, this is the first one thats affordable for the average american families, cheaper than average american home, this is our moment. Now, you run an Organization Called sea setting institute, correct . Yes. How is it funded . Funded entirely by donors, individual donors. Are they public . They are, over a thousand people donated since formed in 2008, 11 years. Including peter tiel. Including peter thiel. So sea setting is the performance of their legacy, so in the 1970s machinery of freedom where proposed that if houses were on wheels and people can chose the countries they want, you economic solution to political problems. The next decade milton wrote free to choose, what if people could choose to be governed less . So Patrick Freedman chose and he said if we made our own lands and instead of over control, we voted with our houses by moving them about and choosing the neighbors we want, we could unleash an economic solution to political problems, we could choose the societies we want and selection by citizens and unleash evolution and government, so who essentially govern it is people off of thailand and who is governing the people of sealand, theres still property of britain, correct . Sealand is property of britain because territorial seas have expanded to encompass sealand and sealand takes position that its independent and britain ignores them. Incremental steps towards independence and they want to evolve new societies from the bottom up and not governance of land but among people who could choose neighbors that they want. On your book you write if the Great Depression had happened in the 50s, you predict that we would be going seastead . It was funded by japanese funder who died and taken on and funded by u. S. Government and it was so provisionary and spent time in the white house and johnson administration, as cold war geared up the project was put aside to focus on getting to the moon. So mankind well on their way and fuller at the end of the life wrote lovingly about city, the last book he wrote, Critical Path forward with floating societies and half century has past, material science says it has advanced, all the technologies to do this have advanced considerably since then and we can make much cheaper flooding societies on behalf of the earth thats not claimed by any nation state. Youre calling them societies and not countries . I am because i think these would be different from countries. Isnation is fundamental monopoly of governance over track of land and floating societies where you can move the land about and choose societies would be voluntary societies and fundamentally it wouldnt be a country, though i do call nations in the book. I call them nano nations. I dont call them nation states because i think this would be emergence governance, we just call them selfgoverning temporarily floating societies and as long as people can choose among them and leave them if they dont like them, better governance evolves over time. Mr. Quirk would call into question all nation borders . Nation borders remain if you like your government you can keep your government but they wont to provide alternatives and provide platforms for new innovators and hopefully create societies that will change old government as significantly as hong kong changed communist china. We are nearing Hurricane Season or in Hurricane Season, the proposal and the materials sterdy sturdy enough to build in water . Certainly. The best place to build sea stead is in the equator, its very low, hurricanes dont affect you. How floating nations will enrich the poor, cure the sick and eliminate humanity from politicians, restore the environment, how do you get that . When you build a home on land you destroy life on the plot, if you destroy home on the ocean you provide home for rich ecosystem, so most of the ocean is desert, no life in upper part, life looks for solid things to attach to so imagine if you could increase the amount of life on the ocean with every society you build, so we have muscles attaching the floating platforms, the first piece would be growing underneath the water, they are growing, coral ecosystem on the seastead. This is way beyond sustainability and the book goes into great detail on this. How big could these seasteads get . As big as we would like the challenge is not making them big, but small and affordable so they can succeed and more seasteads can attach and the ones that fail will pick apart as people moves houses elsewhere so we want to create market on competitive and hopefully the most successful ones will grow as big as we want. Back to subtitle seasteading will enrich the poor. A Million People who live in dysfunctional government who have no place to go because existing nation states act as gated community and not letting them in and the great thing about seasteads cant improve economically without People Living in them, i dont think you and i are going to take a job on those seasteads and the developing poor will gladly choose Something Better and provide better options, so i think we can create jobs. What role does seaweed play in seastead . Its fundamental because on land especially on the United States we rely on corn, wheat and soy which is not that healthy and very destructive to the ocean environment, because all the nutrient pollution that we flush into our toilets and farms runs into seas and creates dead zones from all the nutrient pollution which is negative, i read a whole book about this. What makes seaweed unique, kit absorb the nutrient pollution and absorb the carbonic acid from the sea and we store these societies, we can restore these environments by growing seaweed farms and the fish and this has been demonstrated. So people who want to live on seastead create see weed farms and the sea wade is way more healthy for you, complete protein, has all the best fats in it, not many people know that fish get omega by eating algae, very healthy and protein thats way more healthy than the landbased crops we use now. Back to your subtitle, seasteading will cure the sick. The people knocking on our doors demanding seastead are medical researchers and medical entrepreneurs that want to create floating hospitals so people full of ideas for better drugs, better therapies that are held back by the 20th century regulations and they have 21st century innovation that is they want to try out new regulatory structures so people can choose voluntarily. Mother theresas former heart surgeon, called the henry ford of healthcare, quoted in the Economic Times saying that the best way to have hospital is off the coast of existing American City and given that i dont have that im going to build a health city in the cayman islands. Some of the most innovative medical entrepreneurs in the world are looking for ways to create regulatory startups so we can unleash modern innovation in medicine. The fourth part of the sub tiet liberate humanity from politicians, we talked about that a little bit, anything else that you would like to add to that . Well, when im on a cruiseship im not arguing on who the captain should be. Thousands of ship that is fly, why doesnt the dictator of the cruise ship haul us, not because hes more saintly than politician on land because we can choose another cruise. This incentivizes providers to innovate to please us because they are competing with other cruise lines. People say its relatively utopian. Utopias come in through all of the time. You and i are living in the United States right now, the things that come from granite comes from crazy utopians, women should be able to vote, i should ban dancing, dancing shouldnt be allowed, the ideas that people didnt choose went away and now the ideas have stread and changed the whole world. Now in europe people think Constitutional Republic and democracy make complete sense, that would have never happened if there had been the giant of the new world where people, utopians can try their crazy ideas. Can one get a boat out and go outside territorial limits and be his or her nations . You can. Like a cruise ship, both have to dock a lot. All the wonderful things i said about seastead that coral can attach and seaweed, bad for boats, you have to lift them up, clean them and send them back out. Its not an ideal way to live, all the things are good. So youre saying the technology is here, the reasoning is here, whats holding this up and people are interested in funding it . Whats holding this up . We need host nation to allow us to scale up in territorial water, legislate sea zone which is the next step beyond the special economic zone, more than 4,000 of which are peripheral across the world, providing wealth every, where leaving innovators designed sea stone which would be the next step and we dont need your land, we will bring our own land, if we fail its on us and if we succeed we share in prosperity, the only thing is misunderstanding, we solve the engineering challenges, we solve the economic challenges and solve the price challenge, now we just need people and be host of new economy.
