Chairmen in between that we have a quick lunch so it is a tight schedule for the keynote speaker for the first part to introduce jerry who i spoke about earlier today who created all of this and it was his vision to create an organization to curate he also believed to treat everybody as a stakeholder and but now is not the case. But thanks to jerry and other members of the board of directors also founder of the caucus and from the state of washington at the time. Thank you for coming. And our next beaker succeeded congressman white. But he is the driving force so he will introduce our next speaker. [applause] is the congressman here . It is an honor for me to be here and to introduce congressman goodlatte as you know he is retiring this year after a long run in the sixth district of virginia but he has always been the leader on internet policy and on surveillance policy. So we dialogue over the years and but my last word is back when we started this the big thing for the internet was spam. We were a footnote in the Telecom Relay 1996. But what we learned there are multiple policy issues. And then to consider ourselves with a responsibility to work together. Not just for the bottom line that is the state of the net to get together what are the issues working together but you have that dialogue between Civil Society and the private sector. Holding hands because if you dont do that we will not end up with the open internet. So as i pass along i urge you to think community, cooperation and dialogue. Mr. Goodlatte has helped us with that thank you very much. Thank you for those kind words from the heart we have former congressman rick white from the professional internet caucus i met him in the mid 1990s and credit is overwhelming and then to have the idea to take that on. Because he makes this a success every year. [applause] we have another very interesting to talk about internet related issues with the technology they have deployed. So to tell the story of a simple walkietalkie app from saving lives to driving efficiency in business. They rely on the low for those that were stranded from Hurricane Harvey was a communication hub for the cajun navy. Ceo over six years growing the user base over 1 million also founder of tune and which offers thousands of radio stations on demand 275 million users. We will talk about trying to save lives during emergencies. So welcome. We are delighted to have you with us today. [applause] tell us more about t17. It is like a walkietalkie app you can download that and put it on your phone if you say it is a walkietalkie but it is about live voice communication to improve Human Flourishing whether companionship and it is such a fine media to work with. It is a hostile place but live voice like right now is wonderful because they cannot fake that. But that creates a level of intimacy and how we communicate a 2yearold or 82yearold so one is a consumer at with 120 million users to stay in touch with friends and family. These panels that are private or public and they replace twoway radios so somebody why do we spend this money on the secure radios . But that 100dollar ipod does the same thing. How do you monetize that . But the differences Companies Get a private network. But it is with the Free Consumer version. Tell us about the Practical Applications so like the cajun navy and they had to coordinate that information. It wasnt a complete surprise but it is live voice and communicate with large groups of people but that first inkling of the crisis situation it has been the number one overall app starting in turkey or the arab spring or egypt venezuela shut it down and also ukraine. Another case is south africa has a terrible crime problem. Like a Neighborhood Watch on steroids that is across the whole country. So the group the cajun navy gets the credit. Especially with Hurricane Harvey. And after katrina and i love the name the cajun navy. Because they have attention. If you need help get on. So those thousands of people coming from texas. So then they find and then they emerge from the bottom up. But that was just a communication tool. With those management efforts. Is this an example of new technology to supplement so in prior disasters or hurricanes to have this Technology Available so people could have that instant communication because only the organization have that traditional walkietalkie type of device now everybody communicates with everybody else. There is some overlap how do these public agencies to have the rule of law work better with a huge number of volunteers . But Disaster Recovery with a hand out radios that cost thousands or protocols for who can use them if you have a radio you are special. And so that command structure created around that. So another example like puerto rico. Now everybody has a radio. And to take advantage of the infrastructure it is available to everybody so we saw what emerged within hours to be amazingly effective. What is that channel structure look like . So in fact half of them were out of state. So working on a mobile phone. This is a wonderful infrastructure we can take advantage of. If people want to help. Families are deploying may be apparent . Sell many cases in the broad demographic but friends and family there really is no reason because you will have great coverage or a chat group with your friends if people are going out to the bar. But it is also popular to connect people who dont know. So everybody gets on the channel for the rally or there is another channel it is fun to listen to it is profanity laden. Or the storm chaser channels. Or all sorts of those public channels. How has Network Infrastructure played a role . I put the first half of my career with those internet protocols and now fastforward these devices everybody has in their pocket. With 120 million users with the leverage in the power with those layers of technology are so much fun to watch and so exciting. What role do you see the public having Investment Infrastructure . So be careful dont fix what isnt broken. So what has become clear to me through emergencies what is friend or foe . But it is easy to see to see were you can help to see what is happening here. And how we best use these technologies. And they are moving so much faster so to be built in texas moving to palo alto it was in dallas that we came out of some of the same teams to remove this to San Francisco or palo alto or austin . Texas is a wonderful Business Climate it is a fabulous place. With a culture the slogan is keep austin weird. It is true it is unorthodox behavior, thinking, and it is very easy to encourage people what should they be thinking about trying to attract so that is one answer so so much need to keep these technologies working. So before that there was an Audio Streaming Service that you listened to tune in with podcast and rises with alexa. Tell us about your journey. That started early we went through way too long to get ready. So 911 that was a wakeup call. Because i love audio and radio it was vcr so now let me go back. But through a tough period of seven years for a radio feature coming out with apps and it exploded with most of the markets around the globe and not from Sequoia Capital so moved to palo alto and we did. But about that time we were the brainchild of the founder and cto doing such great work from st. Petersburg russia with an Amazing Development team. And he was a holdout so he starts to get some traction it is a different kind of radio we call that social radio. It is about live. Conversations you can hear the words like that campout like that campout send us the pictures. It is a pretty easy decision with unbelievable talent from st. Petersburg russia and that was the point we moved to austi austin. So with Internet Technology and policy issues and online we have lots of people with their own tech companies. So one major mistake is because it is hard and that is because of that and afraid of what may go wrong. So there was a good reason to be afraid for a long time. So happily we have a wonderful revenue model because there is also cash in the bank so find that revenue model and outside money coming in that was risky business. To have a connection between the two as well as opposed to electric cars. Why is radio such an exciting innovation . Radio is about voice. For conversations. It is such a fundamental part to be human. So is it morning or amo rfm or cb radio . As an advertising medium it is phenomenal. That is a way to solve problems one of the things about radio you can enjoy radio and audio while doing something else. You could be driving or running and listening. It is always with you but as i explained it has so much power to communicate but it doesnt have the barriers or the cost of video when you turn on the skype camera that is a pretty high bar. So as a fundamental and that isnt going away to be so excited about alexa with the Voice Applications that a whole other audio entertainment so is the future like sports or music . It is one of the things and of course for with tv and radio that is at the core. So that is a tough business to build that option which is great because it is tough for podcast but sports is important news. Explain your infrastructure needs while they are driving along . [inaudible] what type of bandwidth do you use . It worked without the magic but it could be any type of network it could be wifi or cell but it also works with 2g or those that have terrible neck works so that is one of the reasons youve got to have something. The federal government and state in deploying the nationwide sounds like it illuminates that need so what does your Service Provide . They need to communicate for that technology. Because really we are in the commercial sector. So between those organizations that has been tough for the agencies look at the spectrum and Public Service they are reliable they have been around a long time but but through today those networks were unbelievable to go without all the money or complications. To be wellsuited for citizens. I am pretty excited to do better there. We have time for one more question. I am interested in both of your opinions. Congress has not kept up with Digital Technologies with that capacity from the 70s. I can get you the data. I would like to see it mike only recently 30 or 50 of hearings that are happening. Theyre falling off the radar for many reasons. Through technology and data that is the purpose to find and locate that knowledge in those districts and you have been on top of this and it seems like now it is possible but there is no revenue model and with this type of service would be a disaster unless there were really strict rules do you see this what the industry might do on behalf of Democratic Institutions . The short answer back from harvey is with the right infrastructure that they respond to meet the needs of society. And of course a free market like that wikipedia style of market that is outside my zone of expertise but we do know we are totally satisfied when it is used for good and makes a difference. And that is from most every other technology business. We are the last thing standing between you and lunch. So now they will tell you how to go about getting lunch. [applause] [inaudible conversations]
