For potential Government Shutdown republican state to move forward on passing legislation that would include protections for dreamers. He along with democratic vice chair Loretta Sanchez spoke to reporters about the bipartisan approach to the daca bill. [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] good morning, everyone. Im chair of the Democratic Caucus and joined by the vice chair of the Democratic Caucus, linda sanchez. We are two days before the potential for another shutdown. The only person in washington i believe i said that it would be good to shut down the government is the president himself. I dont think thats what the American People want. Serving up with the Democratic Caucus wants, and we are working in vain to see the government remains open. America needs and deserves leadership and theyre not getting right now for the present nor from the republicancontrolled house of representatives or from the senate. We have two days ago. Our republican colleagues have been complicit in the lack of leadership that has been deficit by the white house and being implicit and lack of leadership in the house and the senate in getting a budget passed. Thats not what the American People want. They want to see government operating. This is the third time and a short about the space that we have had a cr before us once again in the short term as of last night present to the republican caucus. Its not the way in which the American People want the government to run. Let me turn to my colleague, linda sanchez. Thank you. Good morning and thank you for joining us. I would just like report that this brief the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the tricaucus leaders had a meeting with john kelly to talk about a fix for dreamers. There are a number of legislative proposals that have been introduced that would essentially provide the relief that dreamers need and deserve and that the president promised. We had a pretty fruitful discussion about the fact that there are solutions that have been proposed, Bipartisan Solutions on the house side. There is a senate bill that is being worked on but they have core consensus on. We are simply asking for a vote. Give us a vote on a fix. We think we have the votes. I believe if that bill were allowed to come to the floor we would have the votes to pass the piece of legislation that enhances Border Security but again gives dreamers the certainty that they need and that they deserve. This past week we were back in our district for the Martin Luther king, jr. Holiday. We had a number of tax events in which we talked about some of the impacts that the republican past tax bill will have, especially on californians. Have to say theres a lot of discontent from folks in my district about some of those harsh impacts. As joe said, the republicans are in charge. They have to scan days to try to keep the government open. This would be the third shortterm cr in five months, keeping government open is a basic function that should be a nobrainer. And yet republicans struggle to find the support they need to adequately fund of priorities but democrats in particular have their eye on Community Health centers, the opioid epidemic, Disaster Relief and a number of other priorities that the republicans simply choose to ignore. And with that i will turn back over to joe and then we will open it up for questions. On daca, how united is the caucus on not voting for any cr if theres no progress on daca . Democrats are united on the issue for daca. We have been and continue to be here we always will be. We believe its a paramount issue for our country. Not only for the thousands of people but polls indicated overwhelming american policy solution to this issue, want to see relief for these almost 800,000 souls. People especially [inaudible] they love this country. They are dedicated to the advancement of this country and we as a caucus are dedicated to them as well. Weve will know the deal when we see it, quite frankly. And so we remain optimistic that a deal will be in place that we can support. But pardon for the followup, but in terms of the cr are you instructing the caucus or suggesting that they withhold aa vote . Republicans have the ability to pass a shortterm cr. They have done on their own without democratic support or help. And if they want to have the support, we demonstrate in the past as well when it is reflective of thousands of the Democratic Caucus a gets support of the Democratic Caucus. Absent of that it will not have the support of the Democratic Caucus. I was a democrats are overwhelmingly united in that effort. Nobody is directing members. Members are making choices based on what is best for the district, and his image and some of the Funding Priorities that we had been begging republicans to include in a spending bill has largely been ignored. These are bipartisan issues that affect constituents of both republican and Democratic Congressional districts. They have no, the Opioid Crisis knows no party loyalty. So we believe that if republicans choose to ignore these bipartisan issues that are deserving of their time and attention, that they will not receive democratic votes for their spending bill. Had ask you about your meeting . I just want to clarify does this mean as is democrats will not vote for the reauthorization as part of the cr . We believe it is woefully lacking in other issues as mentioned, Community Health centers, the opioid issue, the issue of the opioid addiction, of veterans, lack of daca, lack of Disaster Relief to puerto rico and the Virgin Islands and also. To garner democratic support. Good afternoon. Let me start by previewing some of the president s plans for the rest of the week. Tomorrow he will travel to pittsburgh, pennsylvania.
