Debates. The Youth Parliament will now consider the third motion of the day and the last of the morning session with experience for 11 to 18yearolds. The formation is printed on the order paper. To move the motion, i call from the northwest of england water often. [applause] thank you mr. Speaker. The dream and reality is action. Its an everlasting effort us thoughy often tell you cant speak to between education and the worldhe of wok but what if i told you it is broken by misguided opportunity and we need to tell our young people so when 65 of employees bring Work Experience in and only 30 are willing to operate shortly something has to change. Because of the school you attend there is no obligation for the Work Experience and it is an inequality of opportunity. We should no longer have to say that we live in a time where our futures are defined by where we are from, what our parents earned and especially by an Education System that has failed many generations that came before. And now our actions today [inaudible] my home manchester i remember growing up with my friends and we dreamt that we could be doctors and some even astronau astronauts. But there is this critical realization that we live in a society that lives up to no expectations of what we can grow up to be. To oppose the motion, please welcome from thee east midlands. [applause] [cheering] thank you mr. Speaker. Work experience changed my life, not a phrase often we would love to hear. I am here not to campaign against Work Experience but to campaign for better Work Experience. Lets be honest, Work Experience is pretty pathetic. The Current System is everything but what we want it to be. It comprises those that need to be reality inspired and challenged to have their eyes opened up to e a world full of possibility but sadly as it stands produces dissatisfied and disinterested each coming out only negative. I do not want to make tea and coffee t ever again or some may say i never want to work in retail. Does this sound familiar . Providing quality experiences would inspire an entire generation. We are the youth of today who have dreams and High Aspirations and are being let down by poor Work Experience and coerced into being tea boys and girls under the banner of Work Experience. Heres something to think about. By th been living and working institute we still dont know what the Work Experience looks like and this begs the question whos to say if our current Work Experience is actually beneficial. So mr. Speaker and all of those here today, we need to reevaluate the state working experience and think about what we want it to look like. This will take time, Good Quality Research and collaboration of many different organizations. But this is research that needs to be done. Its only after this that we can say yes, this Work Experience works and its only after this we can campaign for the Work Experience that enhances the education and development. We need to offer standardized Work Experience with various disciplines or multiple professions. So, my argument today isnt to campaign against Work Experience but before we take the steps, let us take a moment to reflect on our practice, let us take a moment to step back and improve the quality of Work Experience. Let us create a future where we would grow too be pioneers, a future which would allow us to say Work Experience changed my life. Thank you. [applause] thank you for the excellent speech. I think now i would like to hear if possible a speaker from scotland. [inaudible] the system to power to make the case up to and including Work Experience. Its been a point to be made they are just as capable of making the decisions as the youth. [applause] and on that note theres been cynicism that doesnt mean we are on the wrong side of history, we are on the right side of history. Did the working class give up, we are on the right side of history. It is a Youth Parliament. Lets see the change we want to see in the world and we are not the generation of the government know we are ththat we are the gt will not waver. Thank you. [applause] speeches on the Work Experience helps if w and we are looking fa speaker from wales. Yes, the young woman in the middle. Dl we need to ensure that the youth of today can prepare individuals to achieve this Work Experience. Nowadays those are ones with connectionsow and work for Large Companies if we say this should no longer be. By having the government intervene to they have equal opportunity. Employers, two thirds say that they want individuals with work. The youth of today do not have Work Experience so how are we going to get hired for the job stuff we need. There wouldnt be a quality so for a quality and opportunity i urge you all to support this motion and both Work Experience as the most important. [applause] earlier i mentioned to you we had been visited by the clerk assistant in the house and we are now joined by the senior procedural official and head of the House Service with whom i worked very closely every day and hes worked in this place for over four decades and is hugely respected. [applause] d thank you for your interest and support. A representative from york shire was an extraordinary level of excitement. I think we will take the young woman in the pale blue dress. Thank you so much mr. Speaker. I am a member of parliament and currently you can attend a school where you receive all the help in the world to get good experience or you can attend school but received no help whatsoever. In the countr a country where wn equal opportunity for all i ask you this mr. Speaker how can this be justified . We cannot underestimate the importance of the placement from one place and we ca that we cane likely to get into a university but because they are any more deserving but because they may have had more help to get there. They didnt have that Work Experience placements. I am here representing all viewpoints that need to be hea heard. Someones background doesnt affect their ability to achieve. This is the United Kingdom i want to live in. Thank you. [applause] now from london. Who do we have from one end. The gentleman [inaudible] we look forward to hearing from him. [inaudible] i would like to dedicate a speech to a close d friend of mine. [inaudible] strong backing from the community and i met aes lot of young people. He wants to speak to me and said specifically he was being bullied at school because he was kurdish. Local kurdish families in my constituency have come here as a result of fleeing iraq or their country. He was being bullied and attacked constantly every single day. I know that a lot in my constituency [inaudible] i think it is better to vote on aic topic where we can cover a much broader spectrum of issues which helps all young people. Thank you. [applause] before i call somebody from the West Midlands in a moment, let me welcome and enjoy the support from my colleague the labour member of parliament. [applause] thank you for your interest and support. Now, who do we have from the h West Midlands young woman here n here in the second row. Thank you mr. Speaker. A quick giggle will assure you [inaudible] we would be essentially bridging the gap. The statistics regarding a car goes past fou to have four or me encounters with employers therefore Work Experience should be integrated with a High Quality Program within old schools throughout a the uk but are fragmented across the country and is detrimental to the youth of today as they dont have the skills to complement their educational skills therefore i believe it is critical to make this a priority that wed i do believe will see a change should in the next 12 months. Thank you. [applause]iaia the speaker from Northern Ireland we have anyone from Northern Ireland . Forgive me if youve already spoken. Some people dont get to speak at all. What about the third person that hasnt spoken to the person wish to speak . I know you want to keep it brief but thank you. [inaudible] we have a system in Northern Ireland and im confident its helped most people but there is still an ongoing problem. Some dont even knowre it exist. I know fore a fact this is beneficial to young people to help advance careers and dreams and getting a chance to get them help in their upcoming decisions. I would love to see people in other parts of the uk to have io isame opportunities as will. I find it appalling that this is being overlooked in the system that has stood by us from our early days and i cant help but feel that the young people of england have been led down by the past government and as one we are promoting today. Thank you very much. As[applause] now what about the east of england . We havent heard from the east of england. A couple of years ago i had the privilege of doing Work Experience with the chief executive and it was further Campaign Opportunity we also have an online hub to get people to apply for college forms, we have all the information there and it changed my perspective and its made me feel more involved in the workplace and allowed me to have the opportunity i have today to be speaking to you in the house of commons. However i think it is important because not everyone has this privilege to be ables to have te opportunities that i have had to go into a global healt the globd work with the chief executives. We have not all had that experience. We can still fight the good for 16 and for the rights. Thank you this pic before i call the representative from the southeast of england please welcome a member of parliament from the southeast of the conservative member immediately to my right waving ostentatiously to his adoring fans. [applause] very distinguished track record in the army and he served in many forces at a very high level and has experience as most of us probably thankfully will never have said hes been a brave soldier is country and its a pleasure to have you with us. Thank you for your support. I think i was good to hear next from the southeast of england. There are two people that have been waiting for a while. Im going to call the young woman here. Saturday we are in a society where people do not take the degrees that they are studying on to work. People have little or no experience of what its e like working and they will spend the rest of their life doing this. Theyre stuck with no clue. This is the society left unguided and uncertain on how to spend the rest of their lives. Now i believe strongly in the government offering education we have the duty to our young people and constituents to give the opportunity to explore and find themselves in how they wany want to go into their working years. For the sake of a more passionate pair generation i urge you to vote this notion. Not only will we see more individuals from more backgrounds but the economy will improve. [applause] thank you very much indeed. [applause] a im going to call a speaker from the northeast of england. Take a seat and prepare yourself. I want to welcome my elementary colleague, the chair of the Pensions Select Committee of the house, the right honorable member without introduction since 1979, 38 years a member of parliament and widely recognized members across the house and in many parts of our country as more people want a member of parliament to be which is a principled and fearless seeker and seeker for truth. [applause] what about a friend from the northeast who has plenty of time herself and we look for to hearing what you have to say. Mr. Speaker, im representing [inaudible]. The idea of Work Experience is so ideal in battle furthering our education for work. How can we possibly prioritize this notion the basic foundation of our education and institution are not yet filled. The work on investment of our education we must ensure every single young person in the uk is guaranteed a basic, fair and curriculum for life. Northwestern england. The gentleman waving second from the end red tie, white paper in his hand just to chelating now. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Im the member of the youth [inaudible]. I know someone had the opportunity to experience in the United Nations and thats an opportunity that many did not exist and i know thats what you wanted to do better and they wanted to get [inaudible] it is so heartbreaking to see where they dont know to get the Work Experience. Imagine if you the opportunity for people to pound morgans periods online and someone could go i want to do Work Experience and they could go find the opportunity imagine that. Would that be equality of opportunity. Thank you. [applause] thank you what about the east midlands . East midlands. When we got. What about the young gentleman at the end yourself . The key is experience. To learn in a different environment and to explore new ideas and experience to fail. This is what i have come to this position to go against the notion. We live in a world full of opportunities and the foundations to allow all people to have a chance to succeed. As young people will be the future bankers, lawyers and leaders. However, it seems to me that we have grown lazy and it life will be easy but its not. As Sylvester Stallone said in rocky no one will kick you from the hard life but its not about how hard you hit but how hard you get hit and stand up and move forward. We are given the [inaudible] of life is to shape our futures the way we want it. Sure, it will be hard and will be difficult that is good. Experience, life isnt always about sunshine in rainbows. It is only through failure that we can call her salsa success. Life is a teacher. [inaudible] Work Experience takes us away from us and we need to understand projection and to get up and work hard and achieve. Thank you. [applause] thank you. Im looking to call a speaker from the southwestern england and im going to call the young woman in the very back row with the gray, i think it is great, forgive me, in the dark blue dress. Thank you. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Its a great honor to represent [inaudible] in the southwest. I asked one question. Why are we at present making little effort to Network Across the country to aid both young people and companies . We just mentioned young people would be able to access applications to Work Experience easily and not to unnecessary research. This also raises Mutual Benefit like raising the [inaudible] of businesses from interacting with professionals and encouraging apprenticeships. We must take into account that this could offer last changing opportunities to those who never had the chance to develop key life skills. Not just young people from the [inaudible] but let us make a difference by supporting this notion and injecting a sense of energy and passion into what really matters the most. Here here. Thank you. [applause] very soon i will call the concluding speaker from Northern Ireland to wind up the debate. However, for get to that elijah made, as i said, a speech but elijah hadnt actually finished his speech. He is restored to full figure and we are delighted by that and elijah will finish his speech. [cheering and applause] mr. Speaker, the reason i shut the gentleman send it is because of what he said. It isnt about how hard you hit but how hard you can get through and keep you from falling. Thank you for those words. [applause] [inaudible] [laughter] i will try again. The difference between dreams and reality is action. The very essence of youth and built upon our passive dreams and a resolve to strive in an everlasting effort to come over cover trials that often tells us no, you cant. Work experience by convention is that to bridge the gap between education and the role of work, what if i told you its the echo of a convention broken by misguided opportunities, failed dreams and a need to tell our young people to never look beyond the light youve been given. 65 of employers believe Work Experience to be typical for employment and only 30 are willing to offer it surely something has to change. In 2012 we were told as young people that because of the school we attend there was no obligation to help Work Experience, its an inequality of opportunity only. We should no longer past the stage we live in a society decided by where we live, what our parents earned in especially by an Education System that is built the many generations that have come before us. Our actions today we can break the cycle. Im sorry, im overwhelmed from my home in manchester. I remember growing up that we can be doctors and that we could be lawyers and those who believe we could be [inaudible] and it was from a critical phase in high school and the observations with the drive to achieve to realize we live in a society that has little to no expectations of what we as a people can go on to be how can we accept young people beyond the four walls today to maintain that expectation for themselves. I was once told that [inaudible] should never dictate potential and with those words i stand before you today with the police. I believe that a young person in the streets of [inaudible] deserves the exact same opportunity as young person and i believe that a young person in [inaudible] deserves the exact same opportunity as young person from westminster and i believe that the young person who feels isolated in the areas of this country that has the exact same opportunities as young person from harlow. We are told is on people that we are the future yet what value does any of that carry when selfproclaimed title such as the United Kingdom has left the opportunities of so many young people divided and allow me to say that once more. If we are the United Kingdom then why have we divided the young people by opportunities . Two. [cheering and applause] i look to all of you today and i tell you all let us be remembered as the [inaudible] to show that this country in the 21st century we should no longer have to be defined by reform because we all have a future to aspire to. Let us be remembered as the mips that can say we made our mark and most importantly let us be remembered as the young people we are to pass Work Experience to young people of this country. I thank you all. [cheering and applause] elijah, thank you for your sincerity, your eloquence, for your passion and indeed thank you for your courage. You are the spirit of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament. [cheering and applause] to conclude the debate i call, please welcome from Northern Ireland, jenny. [applause] thank you mr. Speaker. I also think elijah for the passion argument for and against the motion encouraging implementation of Work Experience for 11 to 18 yearolds and i think i speak to everyone when i say elijah, you are amazing and we are all so proud of you cut bac. [applause] following the review of education 2012 we are trying to arrange for existence from age 11 through 16 was removed and instead a higher [inaudible] was placed on 1619 yearold where the department for education expects schools to offer Work Experience as part of the study program. In regards to the argument forward by my honorable friend should opportunities be limited to highlevel placement or more realistic placements for other roles whether you aspire to be a hairdresser, a builder or a surgeon should all roles not be considered if we desire to be solely inclusive . Secondly, is the reality of entering the workplace being given autonomy responsibility or is it photocopying and shell stocking with a gradual progression . One could argue that, yes, photocopying is mundane and uninspiring but they are sometimes necessary tasks and the reality for so many workplaces. The importance [inaudible] it screams the standard regarding what employers want what is available to young people. Clears desire soft skills like communication, initiative and teamwork, skills that are necessary for us to succeed in the modern workplace. You can only learn and develop these life skills when youre given the opportunity to grow by experiencing new challenges and new opportunities in the skill environment. These changes need to be made to addresses. With over 173,000 businesses offering workplaces but still there is no direct support for the people. I was luckily accepted last summer into a work placement in belfast and helping to say it changed everything for me. My dreams, my path, my goals, everything. My Work Experience worked but this is not regrettably the case for so many young people. What is it working . We need to give young people a second steppingstone to bridge the wide gap in education and employment. We simply cannot ignore the fact that the april and june of this year there were over 790,000 young people not in employment, training for education, 90 of these are people have had some boredom of Work Experience. Suddenly people are leaving education completely disconnected from the reality of the world around them and the reality of the workplace. This notion seeks to improve accessibility but is that the real problem or is it the sense that the quality of Work Experiences lacking . It speaks for itself. Positive steps and we still have many thousands of young people struggling to find placements so, whether making the t is your cup of tea or you wish to immerse yourself in a world of test tube and electro microscope the question is how is that . [inaudible] my honorable friends, is your decision. Thank you. [applause] thank you, jenny, for that firstclass conclusion toward weight. Order. Order. That concludes the morning session of our sitting, the Youth Parliament will now adjourn until 1 35. Friends and colleagues i invite you all to return to Westminster Hall for lunch. Order. Order. For 2030. It is just over an hour. Before i do so id like to take one minute to pick up on something we touched on today the tragic events in las vegas last week and i would like to turn the mic o
