And now live to london for british Prime Ministers question time. Each week the house of commons is in session we bring you Prime Minister David Cameron taking questions from members of the house of commons live wednesday mornings on cspan2. We invite your participation via twitter using the hashtag pmqs. Prior to question the members are finishing up other business. Now live to the floor of the british house of commons. The threat israel faces. The second essay was in coverage in the daily mail and other newspapers about Charities Supported by her department of music aggressive fundraising tactics. No doubt she welcomes this decision to suspend all telephone fundraising in the uk whilst it investigate these claims of malpractice. What steps will she take to ensure other charities embroiled in this case follow suit . As i announced in my opening response, we just got a process underway within our Department Working with Civil Society both communicate internationally to look out we can strengthen that relationship. As part of that though i believe it is also going to be discussion of standards and commitments ngos can make in ensuring they are part of the strategy we are delivering. But a good part that does not have reputation risk to it. Questions to the Prime Minister. Close question number one. Number one, mr. Speaker. Thank you, mr. Speaker. We assess our defenses spending constantly. Is figures published last month show we are meeting the 2 nato target this year. Dr. Julian lewis. As the Prime Minister and the chance to know quality is not the issue with our armed forces but quantity is. Given that we used to spend regularly between four and 5 of gdp on defense when we last faced a threat on the continent and major terrorist campaign should we not be aiming as a 3 target rather than the bare nato minimum . The point id make to my honorable friend, hes right we do face very severe threats in our world is the only way to Strong Defense is to have a Strong Economy that is absolutely key. We made some clear commitments about the size of our armed forces, about the successor to the submarine and also a Vital Equipment program where we have aircraft carriers in the other equipment vital to our Armed Services that are coming through. Those things only possible because we closed the deficit in the mess we found when we became the government and we have a Strong Economy. Harriet harman. Ten years ago the 7 7 bombers cruelly took 52 precious lives. We remember them the families courage and injured and we defied the terrorist. Mr. Speaker last month the Prime Minister celebrated the magna carta which set out that those who govern must be constrained in their exercise our power to protect those they govern. Our human rights act is the very embodiment of those values. If he accepts their needs to be an effective check on executive power, even though at times to get uncomfortable for government, will he abandon his plan to water down the human rights of dan . First of all kept very much agree with the right honorable lady with what she said about 7 7, about the tenyear anniversary, about the bravery and the dignity of those families that lost their loved ones . She like i took part in the commemorations yesterday that thats overstating it a permanent reminder to the threat we face and the work we must do to face down the evil of these cameras and the narrative of extremism. The point she makes about the magna carta i would study demonstrates the human rights before the human rights act. [shouting] and the point i would make is our proposed reform is another british bill of rights so the more of these judgments are made by british judges in British Courts. Harriet harman. But its very important we are not hesitate and are compliant with International Standards on this. Otherwise it gives a strong signal to other countries and we want to undermine those standards but there have been mixed messages. Last week senior government sources briefed the newspapers the Prime Ministers view was withdrawal from easy h. R. The European Convention on human rights is not going to happen. But home secretary, the justice secretary the leader of the house have indicated that they want to lead. So can the Prime Minister make it absolutely clear that britain will be staying in the European Convention on human rights . I think as i said before theres a danger of believing everything you read in the newspapernewspaper s. Our intention is very clear to pass a british bill of rights which we believe is compatible with our membership of the council of europe. As ive said at the dispatch box before no one should be in any doubt when it comes to issues like prisoner voting for things like that i am clear these issues should be decided in this house of commons. [shouting] and i think its vital lets give more rights producing to recite in British Court and lets recognize we had human rights in this country long before labours human rights act act. It as he reassures us were staying in the European Convention we might as well keep the human rights act which at least means we can go and get it in force in our court. Mr. Speaker 10 years ago beauty was awarded the 2012 olympics and paralympics. When he took office the Prime Minister promised these gains games within increase participation. As the number taken part in sports gone up or down since the olympics . Participation in sport has gone up since the olympics and it has been a success come and we should all remember what an excellent Olympic Games it was. Weve also seen, weve also seen a real success in primary schools where we are seeing more activity in terms of p e and the primary source for partnership are working very well. I dont know what it says in his briefing folder but he is completely wrong on that. Since 2010 the number of people taking part in sport has gone down and children at school are doing less sport, too. Does he agree that what we now need is a proper National Strategy for sport participation so we dont miss the golden opportunity presented by the olympics, and opportunity his government is so far wondering . [shouting] we are sitting comfortably. There are 1. 4 million more people playing sport once a week and when we won the bid to host the Olympic Games. [shouting] the recent active People Survey [shouting] order. Mr. Bryant, you are not an esteemed member of her majestys [shouting] the Prime Minister. Order. Whether he is a sting or not hes a member of the shadow cabinet. [laughter] spooky might be esteemed by you mr. Speaker, but some of us take a different view. As a result [shouting] [laughter] as a result of the p e in schools, average time at primary level is increased to over two hours a week. 91 of schools have reported an increase in the quality of p e teaching. 96 of schools have reported i know they dont like facts but when asked a factual question they should welcome a factual answer. [shouting] ive got all day mr. Speaker. However long it takes the answer will be heard. [shouting] theres not much else on today mr. Speaker, so [laughter] and more than eight in 10 schools are seeing a rise in the number of children to export in schools. The olympics was a success for britain. Sports participation is gone. More is the happening in our school and we will build on that legacy. The fact we dont like is that sense of the olympics, participation in sports has gone down. Among children and you should get up and solve that out. Mr. Speaker, into english manifesto, the conservative Party Published he promised that before making changes to the constitution on english and spoke for english laws that he would have a quote consult the house of commons Procedure Committee, prior to seeking approval from the whole house to the proposed stenting order changes. Windy they do this . When did he do this . Theres plenty of time [shouting] i have to say to labour, lease we published an english manifesto. [shouting] now look i think its a very simple choice a very simple choice for this house. Ever wondered why dont we talk about the substance rather than the process . [shouting] postdevolution we have a problem of unfairness, which is english mps have no say on scottish issues, get a scottish mps have a say on english issues. Now that is the problem. We are proposing a very simple measure which is that legislation should be passed on english matters against the will of english mps. Its a very modest proposal. Is she really saying the labour party is going to oppose that proposal . We agree theres a problem. [shouting] we agree we agree theres a problem and we agree there needs to be changed, but its got to be done properly. [shouting] changes got to be done properly. And, indeed, he said at last weeks Prime Ministers question, he actually said we will publish our proposal shortly and parliament were plenty of time to consider and vote on the. He cant have consulted the Procedure Committee because it hasnt even been set up yet. [shouting] so the Prime Minister the Prime Minister should recognize the strength of feelings i think that there is about proper processes to get to this change. If you and all sides of the house, i think he should consult properly or actually he is breaking a promise he made in his manifesto. She talks about proper processes. We have published proposals. We are having a debate in parliament and to be a vote in parliament. I think the labour party frankly has got to get off the fence and tell us do you support does mars proposal or not . We are still waiting for an answer. Question number two mr. Speaker. I have meetings with cabinet colleagues and others and in addition to my duties in this my duties in this house i shall have further such meetings later today. Does my right honorable friend agree with me that Rural Businesses in my constituency such as bmw temper whom he visited are benefiting from this governments longterm economic plan . And can i also ask the Prime Minister what more is government can do to further promote apprenticeships and create jobs in all sectors of this vital Rural Economy . First of all can i welcome my honorable friend to his place. I enjoyed my visit to his constituency and to that specific business. It is a business that is taken on a lot of employees at a lot of apprentices in recent years and the claimant count in his constituency is down by 54 since 2010. What more we can do is encourage Companies Like this one to invest in training in apprentices but that would be such a key to our future and that is what weve got to make sure that we do. And that will only happen if we stick our longterm economic plan. Thank you very much, mr. Speaker. This week this week we can write the worst atrocity in europe since the second world war, the genocide. In a genocidal act, 8372 unarmed voice and men were taken out of a sows to be United Nations safe area and were murdered. Will the Prime Minister commit to do everything in his power to ensure that this genocidal act is remembered and do everything that they can to get the International Community to mark this as well . Here, here. I absolutely agree with you right honorable, honorable gentleman about this issue. It was the largest act of genocide since the holocaust on the mainland of europe as he said 8300 people murdered. The first thing is to be clear, it was genocide in to say to people who question that can they are genocide deniers. Im very proud of that britain has a the second largest set of commemorations and events to mark the anniversary of the dreadful events. Weve also been holding the pen at the u. N. In drafting a resolution trying to bring the world together to make sure it is remembered in the right way, and we should continue to do all we can to keep this at the front and center of european in World Politics so people realize this was genocide and we must learn the lessons from it. [inaudible] suffered has continued since the genocide and since the end of the war. Unemployment in boston is more than 40 amongst young people over 75 more than half of the people of bosnia are considering leaving that country. Will the Prime Minister do everything that he came together with European Partners to support political and economic progress for bosniaherzegovina into the people there real hope for a Better Future . I think the honorable gentleman is right and thats what met with the bosnian president this week to discuss some of those issues as well as talking about commemorating, remembering. I think what matters is making sure the institutions in bosnia work better and the politicians work Better Together in understanding their past and a shared future i think its important we keep the door of access to the European Union open but for that to happen the institutions need improvement. Issues need to be properly dealt with, corruption and problems need to be addressed by theres no doubt in my mind that the path widget membership of the European Union has helped in bosnia as they can help in the west the rest of the western balkans and is a fight we keep that door open. A seven year old suffers from the shins mush or just a bigger every day he has waited for make a decision. A day that threatens his mobility. Last week decisions delayed potentially for up to five months was a bitter public what action can my right honorable friend take to make sure that it makes a decision with the utmost speed of . What i was into my honorable friend who quite rightly raises these issues these are difficult decisions and we know how hard they offer patients and for the families. I think its right that its expert clinicians at nhs england and not politicians who make these funding decisions based on the evidence available. And she knows they have yet made a final decision on these drugs. Their patients and families and other experts can feed into the evidence gathered and consultation process. She asked we can do. Two things one is somehow these drugs that cost over 400000 pounds per patient per year i think its right to ask some pretty challenging questions other companies concerned and wished. The second thing is we must keep investing in our Rare Disease Research come in genomics and making sure the nhs takes of these treatments rapid. Thats the sort of Health Service would want to build. Thank you, mr. Speaker. I put it to an agenda in his manifesto for england which was only part of the uk where he won the election, the Prime Minister promised english sports for and which laws to consult before seeking approval from the whole house before Standing Order changes. We all know that has not been agreed to and it will not be until next week. Can the Prime Minister please tell us why he is breaking his manifesto promise . Would our consulting a hold of the house of commons and the whole of the house of commons will have a vote. And i think when the house of commons comes to have its about it may want to consider what the leader of the Scottish National party setback in 2007. You might find this interesting. He said this to the event transfer in 2007. Is a not completely inadequate is that english mps are not able to decide matters in scotland by scottish mps from the uk parties can vote on matters which only impact on england . That was the view. Now, given that our modest proposal would actually restrict the snp from far fewer votes than their own selfdenying ordinance does go i would think they should vote wholeheartedly with the government on this modest proposal. [shouting] thank you mr. Speaker. As the Prime Minister knows my constituency covers for market towns, but years of labour neglect. [shouting] what [shouting] order order. Order. The honorable lady must be heard and she will be. The Prime Minister of market towns . Let me welcome my honorable friend to her place. I do know her constituency well and spent a lot of time there with her before the election. What i would say is the author of the devolution is not limited to cities. Bridges is open to towns counties and districts. I would say what we need to help our high street is a Strong Economy to press ahead with these local plant them to have deregulation of the class orders that sometimes prevent development of taking place there and i would also argue in the case of market towns we should make parking easier and preferably free. The decision to indefinitely pause the electrification of the rail line means that my constituents face many more years of delayed train, granted journeys and less frequent services. On these are the characteristics Prime Minister of a Northern Powerhouse . Isnt it typical of the labour party today that instead of trying to get behind the Northern Powerhouse in building a balance economy they no. He says that theres an indefinite pause. That is not the case. We will be pressing ahead with this investment. And i think its right that the labour party should be supporting it. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Will the Prime Minister lend his support to plans to extend the life and north nottinghamshire so those People Living in those communities can get access to transport and to employment and those people want to come can enjoy all the Sherwood Forest has to offer . No, i think the idea of the robin hood like this is a very positive want to its something we want to support and we hope to make progress in the months ahead. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Last friday was [inaudible] there was tears flowers as we remembered joe richard come age 19 his uncle and his grandfather. All soccer fans who were killed in tunisia. Because i ask the Prime Minister if you could outline what steps he will take to ensure that the read families and those survivors can have help immediately and for the future of . Here, here. Can i think the honorable lady for her question. Question. I know thousand doses of the whole house go out to them of thethe familyof the honorable ladys constituents get an idea that theyre for something is fitting and it was a very moving come hearing about that on television. As i announced last week ive asked the captain sector device on a Ministerial Committee to ensure work is properly coordinated to support all those who have been affected i was struck yesterday talking to the victims of the 7 7 bombings that they been supported across many years in many different ways covering all sorts of different issues in their own lives and also in the way they wanted to commemorate those terrible events in london. And i want to make sure we do it as well in the case of a tunisian atrocities and so thats exactly what the committee will be set up to do. Cannot associate myself with the Prime Ministers remarks about the families of the victims of tunisia, particularly the family of my constituents. Mr. Speaker, in the last three years unemployment has fallen faster than anywhere else in the country. Here, here. Will my right honorable friend encourage hightech firms to be and remind the labour party that ed balls comments that our longterm economic plan would choke off the jobs and growth was just plain wrong . Well, im delighted that it has disrupted a lease because of such an association with conservative Prime Ministers down figures. But i think the point he makes is a good one. People trying to say that the jobs were created are parttime and lowpaid need to look at whats happening in places like the West Midlands received a growth in manufacturing and engineering to in jobs that have longterm successful careers attached to them, and we want more of that. Thank you, mr. Speaker. If the trend trade is committed to the Northern Powerhouse able to a central element of that is approved transport connectivity to key cities of manchester and leeds and this is now under threat. Given the vague and evasive and take it earlier with Prime Minister not join me in welcoming than new campaign to get the electrification to the line back on track . I concern commit to that because i said a minute ago this is a pause, not to stop. We are absolutely committed to making sure this goes ahead. We also want to get rid of the pacer train that was there all those years under labour. I think the great crisis shows that when negotiating with the eu it is important to be clear about what you want and you should not accept their because they would approve it under pressure. Im sure theyre all sorts of things to learn from the greek experience, but i do fear for the future of that country. Obviously, we want to see greece and the eurozone come to an agreement but we have to be prepared for all the eventualities and to make sure that what it is helping british toros or british businesses or british pensioners living in greece come we have taken all the plans of all the precautions that are necessary. My approach to negotiation i have to say is a little bit different to the greek approach. That is why ive been around to see every Prime Minister and president in europe to talk through what it is that britain wants to see in terms of change in europe and change for our membership in europe. I believe it will be successful. What does the Prime Minister have to say in response to news figures showing that are over 1 million out of two people in this country not getting the basic help they need to get washed dressed often . We need to see continued improvement in social care and we need to continue to pensioners in our country and pension poverty is at an all time low in the country because of his party has kept its promises to upgrade the basic state pension to support the pensioners benefit and to make sure people of dignity and their old age. When my right honorable friend speaks will they make it plain he expects the board of calais will be kept open now and in the future . I think my honorable friend makes an important point. I had a good discussion with president hollander leslie. I think weve seen more action by the French Police in terms of resting the ringleaders and trying to keep roads and ports open. As i said at the dispatch box before i think its important to engage in fingerpointing with the french. We recognize its a shared problem. Border patrols in calais work well for britain and to think and work well for france and we could and we should continue to Work Together on this problem spend my constituents are still waiting for universal critics to be rolled out to them. In fact, are still waiting for a timetable of the planned rollout but what about to hear about the late stage of the government welfare reforms. We finished the last one . I think i make no apology for taking universal credit at a deliberate pace. All of us, many of us many of us in this house can remember what happened when they were introduced tax credits in one go and the people coming to our constituency surgery with problem after problem. So its quite right to do this at a deliberate pace but i can promise her, universal credit will be coming to bristol south soon. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Every child deserves a best start in life not least those who need adoption. Can my friend set out how the 30 billion pounds of extra funding will help even more children find a loving home . Welcome my honorable friend and is now imported as i think we get this right. We saw a big increase in adoption in the last parliament because of the changes that we made and what we are putting on the table in this parliament is extra money but also the proposal to create regional adoption agencies so that counties can actually and other adoption agencies can come together. What matters is finding a loving family for the child rather than ensuring it is in the precise geographical area where the child might be in care because a loving home is what matters above all. Im told the Prime Minister [inaudible] will this be a case of english hunting for english boxes . [laughter] there will be an opportunity that you as were talking to an opportunity for the house of commons to debate an issue and and then have a book or i do whatever else came here for but i think thats quite a good idea. [shouting] mr. Speaker, under the Prime Minister has plans to study the building Great Britain support earlier this year which put the cost of at 23 billion pounds a year. Will he commit to focusing the welcome additional spending on a pretty troubled Family Program which invest in strong attachment for teenage parents and babies at this as the best way brought up in strong loving familys . I think my honorable friend was great experience in these matters make a very good point in that we are looking at how to proper parenting between mental and physical health and everything we can do to strengthen families should be part of our agenda of genuinely tackling poverty because we want to tackle the causes of poverty. Alongside death and addiction and the rest of it family breakdown is a because of poverty poverty so the work he talks about is vitally important important. [inaudible] access food banks does the Prime Minister think its a priority for the country to bring back [inaudible] spent i think the priority is to keep going with a growing economy that season 2 million more people in work on that will keep growing and economy to keep going with any comment that is cutting taxes for hardworking people. Thats the priority and thats what youre going to hear about in a minute or two. [shouting] powering the economy i think ive lost my voice last night when the Prime Minister congratulate work of for winning the 350 Million Pounds contract to supply 45 more secured local jobs for the next dirty five years . My honorable friend is absolutely right that just as i was saying the Automotive Industry has been so important for the West Midlands in recent years, the growth in the train industry has been so important for the east midlands in recent years. The pearl that the progress is impressive. I had great project using their earlier in the and they let me drive a trinket i wasnt very successful at that but the company is comfortable. Its investing for the future, providing trained for our country and that it is put into and skills for the whole region. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Im surprised to learn in response to a question from myself and others that the government has now to know whether Northern Powerhouse is a. So given [shouting] order. We do have a bit of other places to get onto, but the honorable gentleman must be heard. So given the recent cancellation of major transport projects, is it not, in fact the case the only pipeline can be found is in the Prime Ministers imagination . [shouting] the truth is the labour party ignored the north for years and they cannot bear the fact, they cannot bear the fact that its a conservative Prime Minister at a conservative chancellor sitting for a seat in the northwest that is putting these issues firmly on the agenda and funding them. [shouting] order. Here on cspan2 will leave the british house of commons as members of onto other business. Org and click on series 30 every program that weve entered from the british house of commons since october 1989. We invite your comments about Prime Ministers questions via twitter using the hashtag pmqs pmqs. This summer booktv will cover at festivals from around the courage and top nonfiction authors and books. Texas a m University Former staffers in the george h. W. Bush administration discuss the time working in the white house and how it helped repair them for later careers. Will hear from a former Deputy Press Secretary a former special assistant to Vice President bush and a former assistant hud secretary. This is just under one hour. [inaudible conversations] well, thank you guys for coming to College Station texas, all three difference. We also dont have it one way or another but we all did some cool and unique things today. Love going to talk about is sort of like whats happened between elevator operators and ceo of a major firm in florida, or having a Television Show thats fashioned after you and the role that you play now or asking the cabbage question smelling like average. I dont know what were going to get but lets start with this. We will start with you kathleen, since you mention the elevator operator. I started in biochem and i saw the light i changed. So that was very first job you ever had come and do you think that job had any influence whatsoever on who and where you are today . Absolutely. The first job i had was elevator operator for the senator only capital. I would get a lot of young people when i talk to them come know your territory. Every senator a cut in the elevator i knew he was testifying today. I knew what was going on in the u. S. Capital indigenous everybody. If youre the person with the answers, theres always other jobs and other opportunities which i waited there to get my clearances and talking down to the white house and join the National Security Council Staff under president reagan before got to work for Vice President bush. We can talk about the rest later. First job, my first job was at a Community Food bank. And the role of the food bank was to encourage restaurants not to waste food and to give it to people that need it. I really complained about the job. Complained because it was not exciting. I wasnt making any money. It was my first job out of law school, i mean out of college. But was really good about the job in hindsight is, because it was a nonprofit, i got to do everything. I learned so much of there. I got to go everywhere. I really learned the basics of communications there at that nonprofit. Because i did everything. I had the right of speech. I do set up the podium. I had to know how to take photographs. I had to do media adviser to it was the best job ever. First job for me out of college was an internship at the Republican National committee which was great because i cant answer, the art 80s some of president reagans mail i got into. I dont know if he used it without what he did. It was great because i got to learn, account to see if things were. My first real job was with congressman jack kemp. That was a great job for me. I was a legislative assistant to i was writing a brief. Theres a brief called the legislative digest on capitol hill that the republican congressman used as sort of a summit of each bill that comes up in congress. I was one of the people who wrote that brief which is once again a great way to get exposed to a lot of issues. It was great to work with jack who would later boomerang background for me and i would end up working for him under president bush. So why did you make this decision to like stop talking to members of congress and Start Talking like other people and acting like other people and packing the car and moving to california . For me i had sort completed all my goals in washington house, senate, worked in the office of management and budget. I worked in the Cabinet Department site felt like a complete all my goals and it was time just to head for the sun and fun. Just really to kind of relax enjoy the nice weather. Ive been in washington for 11 years. You cannot beat the weather. So i figured its interesting to washington and l. A. Are very similar towns in so many ways. Each one is about networking. You are only as good as your last job. The red light is on, you better produce, the whole deal. You are responsible to the people if youre good at what you do. For me just to get the ground running in l. A. And figured let me use the network and iodine or the networking approach that i done in d. C. Would attack los angeles. It was great. For me i was used to working 12 hour days or longer in d. C. To arriving january of 1993 in the middle of what was the winter back on the east coast hit the ground running in l. A. Was pretty good. Cathleen . What was the question . [laughter] im sorry. I grew up in california. I ended up going, but they come with a left i got my current job i moved from new york down to work for there was a reason you went to new york. I went to new york to work on walsh and get my computer i was want to get into the company is a situation. And i think a lot of the skill set that are early on about being prepared and working on a team and building 18 all came to fruition. This is my second Construction Company what you never thought would be running a Construction Company but i ran one come and environmental Instruction Company based in tampa and we grew that from 52 million, that she wanted me. This company about with some private Equity Partners three or four years ago, we quadrupled the size of that. It is a lot of the same skill sets and bachelor in your basic job where you learn how to do everything from running a xerox to taking notes to find in the details that i still do today. The key part is building a good team. Im trying to envision you any hard hat. I have my own hard hat with my name on the. I have still tipped boots and a safety vest in the back of my car. I met an immediate disadvantage. He opened the video to successful executives and now you cut to me and im in the bathroom. [laughter] whatever it takes, whatever it takes. Judy, when you were getting regulate the white house or what was going through your head . Probably like most what would come next. And what was really good about the white house except for of course working for the president was that it gave me really good training experience. When you were working at the white house you have to make decisions very quickly. And because you know that the media is going to report it. All of those skill sets i learned at the white house have been really great in the work that i do know which is crisis. Thats what you do at the white house every day because theres always something going on. So those skill sets were really helpful. I also love to you as well i remember when i worked at the u. S. Attorneys office and i had the opportunity to argue some cases in the court of appeals. Being able to stand up in front of a court with three judges and being able to speak on your feet and ask and answer questions that came in very handy when i had a brief at the white house. So all of those skills were very much transferable, which was great. Someone suggested i ask this question. I know ill be probably worth more than eight to five but lets take a divide, a normal day, you know or you can do 24 if you want to add to 24 hours but to me about a normal day in the life of kathleen shanahan. I go to the gym at about 5 30 a. M. Or six and i come home and fix breakfast and either drive to the office or drive to work. Im really, im in the Business Development for my business i do a lot of networking into kennedy around the state and now we are in 31 states so i spend time strategically using a lot of the networks you make in all these different jobs and experiences to tap in and say this person used to be doing this is now working at Koch Industries where this person is working at a company. Our business is a Soil Foundation is a psycho and try to connect the dots and bring business in the door. Its very engaging. My leadership style is very empowering which i really think i learned from Vice President bush. When we were on his staff everybody had a job and everybody had their assignment, and he just expected you to do them. You did them because you wanted to serve and you wanted to do well for everybody else on the team. But most importantly for them. Thats how i sort of followed in my leadership style is empowering my team setting expectations and then once or twice a week with conference calls. Thats about it. Thats a good day. [laughter] i want that day. You are up. Lets see. My business can have no idea but we keep trying, so every night in italy but always write a list of what want to try to accomplish the next day. Someday im going to actually get all those things done, but usually thats not the case. I sir kevin morning around six we had a seal who got notice that is going to be fired. That was at 9 30. At 11 00 we had an athlete who got into a scuffle. That was at 11 00. At 11 45 we had a young woman who felt that she was not getting answers from the company that she worked with, and informed us and a group of folks that she was about to organize and file a classaction lawsuit. That was all before noon. So my day is always busy. Because i dont have any control over it. What i do is not for the faint of heart it is really 24 7. You get calls at may the . Idea. I do. My phone is always on. It is always on. It could be buzzing right now. I took it away. Yes, you did. The building is shaking. For me every day is different to some degree but the basic date is, i live at the beach get up and we can walk the dog at the beach. Stopped right there. But i love these people and you. Anyway, in the morning i do a lot of voice over worker in the morning im either reading i have a home studio so what is the rate for voice over are actually good jobs for my own clients. Thats in the morning and then i will spend the day afternoon this is like a lazy day just driving around different studios rating for projects are actually doing jobs recording voice over of a lot of tv commercials. Its a huge part of my life has been for 20 plus years. Its a nice subplot apart from the on camera commercials. So im always reading for something on camera or actually performing the job of some kind any given day. Everyday student. If im shooting something that i might be up certainly predawn and come back very very late at night. Depends on what project i may be working on. And also for me i had a recent day where, when im traveling i can do voiceover work which is great. I can take my laptop and am i going with and i can report from wherever i am. If i have to actually get a daytime job i have defined us to do what have i had the i was in augusta, georgia, a few weeks ago and afterwards went to visit some friends in columbus after one and my agent said and said he got to record some old navy studios commercials find as you. I got on a plane the next morning and landed in san antonio and black of edmonton looked at my phone when the plane was landing and the agency can he got to find another state in san antonio record more old navy spots. Even on the road, fortune and my job you can still work from wherever you are. Okay. So microphone. That i just disconnected . Ill talk about. So like so who is kind of the coolest person youve ever had the opportunity to work with . I forgot with a lot of great people. I mean, my first big movie i was on was apollo 13. That was with tom hanks, kevin bacon. Got to sit next to him in the makeup chair in winter there is a thing called six degrees of kevin bacon. My bacon number is want i guess a but here is a to know. I had james cant beat me up on a tv show las vegas, worked with Cindy Crawford in a commercial. A lot of sports stars in commercials over the years. Drew carey, great guy i worked on his show that actually my favorite guys i work with was to hartman began innocently enough when i first got to l. A. And got my first agent, he says youre going to make a good living as a spokesman. We want you to be we are going to represent you for commercials. Lo and behold i get a lott spokesman stuff and have continued to do since. Meaning im the host of an infomercial, that sort of thing. Somewhere early on that spokesman thing, virginia spokesman evolves into this kind of phil hartman died who guy. Im speaking to gracious about what im saying is complete nonsense that guy. And funny enough i started doing a lot of that business. So i met phil hartman on the show newsradio, got to hang out with for the week. Very nice guy, nicest guy in the world. I try to do, ive been ripping off right and left in commercials and voices. Music and welcome i hope it does as well for you as it has for me. [laughter] so anyway. You maybe cant tell us some of the cool people speeding ive got nothing on that one. Youve had some great projects. Talk to us all a bit about some of you really exciting ones. Its hard because i just tried to think of what the public. You know whats interesting is that most of the crisis work that we do, i would say about 95 of the work we do no one knows about it. And thats the way that it should be in the business. It is when something is so high profile that media are interested in it and thats when it becomes public. But generally speaking, we fly under the radar screen. So basically fred ive got nothing. So why in the hell did they do a Television Show about your life speak with i dont know. How did that happen . How did that happen . I think what was interesting in moscow and its what i find interesting for me, is that theres always crisis and theres always problems and so for her you have this endless sort of brain and ideas of stories that you can show. And shes done an interesting job and a good job of dramatizing it for television. My life cant be that exciting anybody who knows me knows about. But yeah, i mean its endless. She will call up and she will say you know, i need something bad had happened to his character. Gave me a bad crisis that could happen. We might come up with a plane crash or, you know Something Like that. And then the question would become how would you handle this plane crash . What would you do . Who would you represent . So kind of putting outrageous thing in the construction business. Who do i meet thats exciting that is aboveground . [laughter] i dont know. I did have in my career, if you can call it that a lot of people said i cant hold a job. Ive worked for some tremendous americans, you know people who have served this country. Those are probably the most influential experiences from president reagan to president bush and Vice President cheney to governor jeb bush and governor pete wilson in california. I have this path of inside and outside of government. In the private sector, just beating people that are running businesses is fascinating to me. Big, small everybody has its all about margin, its all about how you grow your business, its all about how you can use the technological advances that are happening so rapidly in this country to to apply expanding a business platform. Commute is very exciting every day. Its amazing to me how much is happening with online social media in a real business daily with Soil Foundations construction issues, and how much you can impact your bottom line. I have to say its very exciting for me on a daily basis, the opportunities that exist out there. I would be willing to bet you that there are not many females at the top of the game as you are with your business. So for young women trying to obtain a position similar to yours in business or elsewhere or in an industry like yours, what kind of thoughts which assure entrance of what you wish you wouldve known before you started down this path or what you think they might look forward to doing as they sort of beat up against this walk . For women in business, dont be afraid. Sometimes allow ourselves to get intimidated because we dont see a lot of other women in the room. You to see a lot of women as ceos or chairman. You can do and ive said this to many moms. If you run a carpool, you can run a business. It is all about getting things organized, building a team, showing up on time being prepared and not being afraid of a number. I dont mean to dismiss it but its not more complicated than that. If you show up in your prepared and you have the right skill sets around you and your enthusiastic and willing to take risks and make decisions, i think what judy said is so important. What the white house taught me to make the best decision with the most information you have at your fingertips. You are not going to all the answers to make the best decision with what you know and there are going to be a thousand more decisions to make on the same crisis or the same opportunity. And everybody sort of trust youre going to do the best you can do i think that for business, especially for women if you get into the room bring other women in the room listened to other women and make a decision. So, judy you run up pashtun all of your clients are in trouble though. We love getting clients and companies before the actually get into trouble. Just on the corporate side you know, companies that are prepared have an 85 rate of success when you get into a crisis, quite frankly. I think just in anything if you have a heart problem, youre going to get a cardiologist, the best one i hope and i think its the same thing with the crisis. You want to get someone that is able to handle it. And as you say we do our best every single day and try to make the best decisions and come up with a strategy that is going to help the client achieve the results. Its not easy. Its not easy. Ivan what kind of challenges do you have . Lets say you get a script or something that just doesnt feel right, doesnt work right. What sort of challenges do you run into in terms of trying to change it to adjust to . You know you may be threatening your being able to do the job. You are not just another mouth. You try your best to adjust as well as you can. I think thats a big part of it. Like anything even in my business its all about the collaboration. When youre working with somebody when you get along then you can collaborate and. Not a psycho change scripts necessary but if the opening is there and if everybody gets along well, a lot of times thats what can happen. They can be easy to make adjustments on the fly. For me even i dont when i give i call the appointments and not audition because i think addition sort of sounds like im they are out there, im done here and im hoping someone takes me. I look at it more as its an appointment, getting together to see if we work well together. Either you do or you dont. When you get a group that works well together i see time and again on tv shows come on commercials, where is everybody is appreciative and loves what they do and gets along well you get a great product. The west wing for instance, i was on for a few years and boy talk about a group of people that appreciated being there and really loved what they did. Along with a bishop speaks to the. Whereas other shows i worked on i can think of a sitcom or two that only lasted maybe a season where everybody was at each others throats. The lead person. I come on for a guest park for one weeks i didnt do i get to see and get out of there. To the person is complaining and you can kind of see this isnt going anywhere and pretty much as what happens
