Steven we were talking to members of congress throwing their head in the ring and i think the number is 10 or 11 who have either declared candidacy or are making calls to see if they could have the support to make a go at it and everybody from tom is her, the number 3 tom emmer, who might be best position normally you would think after mccarthy and Steve Scalise had competition. He has an operation in erratically would be wellpositioned, but something he did on january 6 might not be popular with trump or Trump Supporters of the voting to certify the election for joe biden, so that is something to think about with emmer. There are other people running or thinking about renting, everybody from pete sessions, the former rules chairman, to the current budget chairman, both from texas. Byron donalds of florida. Some people put his name in to run against mccarthy in january, and there is even some people wondering could mccarthy himself get back in, although the eight people who come of the eight republicans who joined with the democrats to toss him from the speakers chair have shown no signs that they are wavering in their opposition to him, so it looks unlikely he will make a comeback here. Reporter we learned this friday afternoon that nominations, the filing deadline for nominations is sunday at noon for the republican conference, so walk us through thin what happens after that and how soon a next for vote could be. Steven yeah, so the plan as of now or as of friday afternoon, it is, it has been yeah, the things with these republican plans is they change. But the plan has been to go conference on monday and have the candidatess forum where they lay out their candidacy, then on Tuesday Morning uh, meet again to vote on their nominees, and that could potentially include multiple rounds of voting since there are so many nominees. It is quite possible nobody will have a majority in the initial ballot. And then if all goes well, and keep in mind that nothing has gone well for the republicans the last several weeks, they could have a speak of the house by tuesday night, and you know, the thing is even if all goes well and they have a speaker of the house from this crowd of maybe 10 or 12 people running or thinking of running, then that person has a lot of cleaning up to do. There is a lot of bad blood between the various wings of the conference or a lot of people still very upset from Death Threats there family got for voting against jim jordan. Um, and there is also just huge policy split, and and one big one, this might be a huge decision the next speaker will have to make on joe bidens proposal for 106 billion in a security spending on ukraine, israel, taiwan, and u. S. Border security. No matter what the next speaker does without their liable to have have the conference met at them. Reporter and of course that government funding deadline the clock ticking down on that. Just on the speakers race before we believe that, is Patrick Mchenry, the interim speaker pro tem, is that option still on the table at all . I wonder what your thoughts were at that moment with Patrick Mchenry announcing the vote numbers after the third speaker vote and he mentioned himself and how many votes he got and there were some cheers from democrats when that happened. Steven yeah, i think Patrick Mchenrys role here, you know he never wanted this job. He was selected by mccarthy and one of the things mccarthy told us yesterday that one of the reasons he selected him is because he did not want the job as speaker, so it has been awkward because democrats would prefer him from the other names they have heard, including and especially jim jordan. There had been a lot of talk about empowering Patrick Mchenry given that jordan could not seem to get any closer to 217. On friday morning, he went backwards with hints the next vote could be even worse for him paired i think if he him. I think if he had tried to stay in the race there would have been more talk of potentially going to the floor and forcing a vote on empowering Patrick Mchenry to move legislation. It is not really critical right now. The really critical moment would be once the senates done processing this request. The senate will clearly go first. It takes the senate at least a week to do Something Like a supplemental spending bill and possibly two weeks, and once the senate is done with that, then you are talking about the house delays potentially impacting real things not just show votes and votes that are never going to go anywhere, which is frankly a lot of what the house does. They pass bills that they know will not become ball but are sort of a message. They have not been able to do those things but it does matter a lot whether ukraine gets the 61 billion that President Biden is asking for. It does matter a lot whether israel gets by think it is 14 billion in the midst of the new war in the middle east. It doesnt matter if we have this huge new surge for border security. These are big, real things that will either happen in the next few weeks were not, and so we will see, we will have to see how the republicans, whether they can rally, unite, and whether they can stay united in the next speaker can stay speaker because its not clear they can stick around. Reporter i guess ending on jim jordan, there is a lot of congressional history to be written by you and your congressional reporter colleagues here after these past 17 days, but what is the first draft of that history on jim jordans attempt to win the speakership of what does that look like really . Steven yeah, i think jordan, he had not dont up sort of conferencewide support he had not built up sort of conferencewide support early on. The majority of the republicans in congress did not want him to be their leader, then the people who supported jordan promptly went out and sabotaged Steve Scalises candidacy, and i think that ultimately along with some other issues that various members had, whether it be january 6, whether it be being seen in too much of a trump confidant, and also him opposing almost every appropriations deal that has been made in the past 10 years. There were a lot of people who had a lot of questions about him, but what really seemed to cause his candidacy to founder is not necessarily jordan himself but how jordans supporters was after his opponents, Steve Scalises candidacy and sabotaged it, and that bad blood will stick around. You know, jordan had not been somebody who had been in leadership and helped elect members up and down the ballot away mccarthy had, Steve Scalise had. He had not been in the room to cut big bipartisan budget deals or frankly make new laws, and i think all those things sort of became a recipe for failure. When you only have this very narrow majority and you have somebody who is ultimately trying to win via bullyball. Not everybody can be bullied. When she voted on that first ballot on the house floor, it was a major shot across the bow for the wing of the party that jordan represents, the freedom caucus, which has been over and over again agitating for deep spending cuts and decrying the appropriate who want to spend more money appropriators who want to spend more money, and you know, the empire struck back. Can you talk about the National Security implications . Me to not have a speaker from a National Security standpoint. Israel is at war with hamas. Ukraine is at war with russia. Both those countries have major needs. President biden is asking for congress to approve a major aid package for ukraine and israel. That package cant be approved if the house doesnt have a speaker. If that package isnt approved, it would send a bad signal to americas allies and partners overseas about the extent to which they can rely on the united states. Countries like ukraine and israel rely on americas support. And if that support isnt forthcoming, even when the president has made major speeches calling for it, that really would suggest that americas not able to play a strong leadership role in world affairs.
