Goveor desantis talks about representative Kevin Mccarthys removal as speaker of the house and the status of the Republican Party. His remarks came from a politics and eggs event in manchester. Ladies and gentlemen, if i can have your attention. We want to begin so lets give a warm New Hampshire welcome to the honorable governor of the great state of florida, Governor Ron Desantis. [applause] good afternoon Everyone Welcome to a special addition of our politics and eggs. We are pleased so many of you joined us. I want to stop by thinking our politics and eggs sponsors, whose banners you see across the room today, without the ongoing generosity of the sponsors, these programs will not be possible. Were grateful for the commitment to not only to today but to the entire series, and giving the Business Community the opportunity to hear the president ial candidate as they visit this wonderful state. I also want to take the time to thank, at this time, New Hampshire institute of politics, and our cohost here for their ongoing collaboration, the new England Council cannot ask for a better partner in the ongoing initiative. I want to take a moment to quickly remind you of a few of our new England Council of coming events. Next week we will be hosting the House Minority leader with Katherine Clark in boston. New hampshires own congressman chris pappas will be speaking to the new England Council in washington. The following week will be in providence for a breakfast at the sheldon whitehouse. We hope you will be joining us on october 26 for the annual 2023 annual celebration where we will be celebrating four incredible new englanders of the year. As of this morning we have 193 tables. Today, we are on it. We are honored to welcome Governor Ron Desantis to the granite state. As he campaigns for the 2024 republican president ial nomination. Im now pleased to introduce my good friend, our good friend, the executive director of the New Hampshire institute of politics here at , the honorable Neil Levesque will introduce the governor. [applause] i was going to say good morning but obviously we are in the afternoon. A little crumbly creme brulee. What a good day to have our speaker here today as we all know Governor Desantis is a leading figure in the conservative movement. He is a distinguished has a distinguished record of Public Service including being the 46th governor of florida. He was first elected in 2012, 14 and 16 the congress, as we know, and elected governor in 2018, and reelected in 2020 with 1. 5 million more votes than his opponent. That is pretty good. During his tenure he focused on economic growth, job creation, education reform, and in his education, he is an attorney, and without he served with that he served in the u. S. Navy. I want to welcome the governor florida, ron desantis governor of florida, ron desantis. [applause] gov. Desantis thanks so much. Thank you all for being here. Its great to be back in new england. Im a native floridian, born and bred, but i spent seven years of my life in new england for education. I say that im one of the very few people in this country who can say that i made it through both harvard and yale and came out more conservative than when i went in. Not easy to do when youre talking about that. We have at home, a 6, 5 and threeyearold kids, who are floridians. They have never seen snow before. Part of the campaign, being between iowa and New Hampshire, they will get to see snow for the first time. Is it going to be New Hampshire or will it be iowa first, either way we will get them to do snowballs and all the things that they want to be able to do. I was a bluecollar kid growing up in florida. My mom was a nurse, my father worked for nielsen tv ratings. They had to put a device on the familys cable boxes back then. I started working minimum wage jobs. I was a baseball player, i had very good with baseball, high school baseball. My horizons were focused on that. I got recruited to go to places like yale and instant for baseball. I had never been to new england in my life. I never thought to be able to do anything like that. I would show my first day on campus doing what somebody from the west coast of florida would do. I wore flipflops, i wore jeans shorts, and a tshirt. Not something that was in vogue at an ivy league campus, much less when you had kids that went to andover economy academy. It was a different culture for me, the whole time i kept working hard. I did school and sports. I worked every job under the sun to be able to get to school and be able to advance myself, starting with six dollars an hour, working through as many things i can. By the time i graduated, i was known as the most employable kid on campus. If someone needed something i would get random phone calls, can you do this, that . That was kind of the ethic. I want to be able to do well in this world. America gives me the opportunity. I will work hard to put myself in a position to do it. I ended up in new england at harvard law school. Then that was after september 11. I made a different career choice. I can say i was up here when the red sox won the world series in 2004, and broke the curse. I will tell you it was a big deal to be up here. For all seven years i was up here, i was rooting for the red sox over the yankees. Dont worry about that. [applause] in fact my first year in college one of my friends that i played baseball with growing up, his father was managing at the time. Jimmy williams he was a great guy. He called me and said im going to a game at fenway,d o you want to go . We got in the car from connecticut. You show up and it is a neat experience. Tickets are at will call. It is me and another freshman, sophomore. We hand the ticket to the usher. This is a crusty veteran usher. He looks at it. These are good seats. He looks at us, he walks us up, we are next to the dugout. You look straight ahead, you have the green monster. After the game, we were in the office with jimmy and you see pedro martinez, and all of these other people. I got an intermittent intimate view of fenway park. I was up here for that. It was a huge deal. It was really exciting. I made the decision to join the military and volunteer, and volunteer to serve in a rack. When you see what is one on with israel and hamas, a lot of that brings memories with respect to the war on terrorism. I spent time in guantanamo bay. We were in places like ramadi, western iraq, a lot of al qaeda and iraq. There was bad stuff that happened. Ill tell you i dont think i ever saw or read a report on anything approaching the level of barbarism we saw over the weekend with respect to hamas. The decapitation of babies, executing elderly people. It reached a new level of depths of depravity. It shows you that there is evil in this world. The other thing i remember from being over in iraq, in spite of all the talk of al qaeda and the sunni terrorists, most of the combat deaths our folks are facing were from sheer militia funded by the uranian government. We lost hundreds of u. S. Troops, probably over 1000 during that period. So, you want to talk about iran funding hamas. They have doing this for decades. They funded the attacks on our marine barracks. Im no stranger to the role that iran plays in all of that. We did that. I and up they talk about some of the political, it was not something i set out to do. By age 40 i end up the governor of, florida the countrys Third Largest state, and the 13th largest economy in the entire world if we were our own country. Im a testament to the American Dream. A lot of people would not have bet their chips that i would end up running for president , be elected governor, certainly i would not have had predicted that at the time. Im running for president now because i think we are in danger of being the first generation of americans that we leave to our kids and grandkids, that is less prosperous and free than the one we inherited. You look at what is happening in the world, our economic problems at home, the state of our cities, all of these issues, we see the country in a period of decline. I dont think that decline is inevitable. I think the decline is a choice. So, it is going to fall to us to make the types of decisions and exercise the types of leadership that will reverse that decline, that will usher in an american revival, and give this country a new birth of freedom. Thats exactly what i intend to do as the next president of the u. S. Start with the economy. Well reverse the trends we are seeing. Why are we seeing higher prices, Interest Rates . It was government induced, by the response to covid, which was a total disaster, by borrowing and printing trillions and trillions of dollars, acting like that was not going to cause disruptions in the economy. Of course it is going to. You cant spend money and borrow and print money without consequence. We need to discipline congress. Im willing to do that as president with the veto pen. We have too much bureaucracy, too much red tape that bears down and stifles innovation, particularly for small businesses. Well get rid of that. Well utilize the Energy Resources that we have in this country. We have more Energy Resources. If you look at places like the marcellus shale, that any country in the entire world, will help you pay for lower gas prices, less for everything throughout the economy. Its good for jobs, its good for our industrial base. Its good for our national security. You look at iran, russia, china, doing a Green New Deal type policy where we tried to kneecap that production, that benefits them, us being the dominant Energy Producer in this world hurts all the right people. Well make sure we do that. It will be good for the economy. It will be good for our country. Well restore sovereignty in this country. You cannot be a nationstate and have 7 Million People pouring across your border illegally. Do you not think that our enemies around the world have not exploited that open border . We know people have come from china and iran, russia, throughout the middle east. That happens every day. Yet it is happening without really a care in the world by the powers that be. Of course that is led has led to fentanyl coming into the country. Its triggered deaths in this country, at levels we have never seen before. We are losing over 100,000 people a year because of the opioid epidemic. Addiction is a tough thing. This is not limited to people who are habitual drug users. You have students thinking they are taking a pill to relieve stress and it is laced with fentanyl. They take one pill and they die. Ive met a lot of the angel moms throughout the u. S. Who have had this happen, where they have lost a loved one. We had a situation in florida. A family was renting an airbnb unit, an 18 month old baby crawling on the carpet, that happened to be residue from fentanyl from the previous tenant. The baby died by coming into contact with fentanyl. This has got to stop. We will declared a National Emergency on day one. Well marshall all available resources including the military to stop the invasion of this country. Ill build the wall. Donald trump promised in 2016 he would will the wall and have mexico pay for it. More recently, there was no mechanism he could make mexico pay. He did not have a legal way to do it. Thats not what he said in 2016. He was saying mexico is going to pay. He did not do that. The reality is, you actually can have mexico pay. They will not just fork over money. You can impose fees on the writ menaces that foreign on the remittances that Foreign National sent to the u. S. You raise. Billions and billions of dollars i rather they pay for it than have it be paid for by the general taxpayers. More important than that, we are going to treat the foreign the mexican drug cartels like Foreign Terrorist Organizations. They are invading this country, they are killing these people and we will use lethal force to put them in their place. We will also ensure that our military is the strongest in the world and that we remain the worlds leading superpower. Were not on a trajectory to continue being the worlds dominant superpower. What happened in israel reminds us that there is a lot that is going on with terrorism still,a s much as some of us as much as some of us would hope that is not the case. Were in a period where we do have a great power rival with the communist party of china. They want to be able to eclipse this country economically. They want to be able to eclipse this country militarily. If they are to win that battle over the next decade, decade and a half, that will affect the lives of every american in a really significant way. Were going to ensure that we remain a top economy, we remain the top military, and that we are able to deter chinese ambitions particularly in the indo pacific. When we do that, in the 21st century, we will still be an american century. We will ensure that schools in the country will focus on traditional education, not on indoctrination. Im a parent of a 6, 5 and threeyearold, we had to fight the fight in florida to say, you know what, we are going to teach math, reading, science. We will not teach firstgraders that they can have interchangeable genders. That is not appropriate or right. We stood by the rights of parents. Parents have the right to direct the education and upbringing of their kids. That should be the case across the country, including choosing the school of their choice like they can do in florida. I grew up in florida, we were not well regarded in education at the time. We are now fully invested in parental choice. We finished third and fourth in fourth grade reading and fourth grade math in the 2022 nations were card. It works. We also have to have a situation whether you live in a loose date blue state, red state, criminals are held accountable for their misconduct. If you do the crime you do the time. What is happening is a lot of cities are turning their back on the rule of law put a political agenda on accountability. People move to florida and they tell me about it. Everyone has a right to raise their family in peace and security. We will make sure the rule of law bring supreme. We need to restore the proper understanding of the u. S. Constitution our Founding Fathers created three branches of government they did not create a Fourth Branch of government, an administrative bureaucracy that the government is irrespective of elections. Government should be a lit limited. It should not be unaccountable and weaponized against us. We will usher in a reckoning for all the agencies for all those involved with the covid19 policies. They hurt peoples jobs, kids education, peoples abilities to choose whether they can work or not because of some of the mandates. Nobody has been held accountable for that. Florida rejected that. The state has never done better. We have the lower excess mortality because we let people make their own decisions. The cdc, nih, all these agencies have failed the american people. We will bring a reckoning, that we will make sure there is accountability to make sure this never happens in our country again. Part of what people say is how do you trust someone running for office what about you will lead you to be able to do this i think people can trust me to do this, if im the only one running for office today that is has accomplished everything i said i would accomplished. We delivered 100 on our promises compared to what is happening in washington dc with not being able to pick a speaker. We dont do showmanship in florida. It is not a game, it is about reading results. And the results we have been able to produce are second to none. We have run massive budget surpluses. We have paid down almost 20 of the states total that since i become governor throughout the entire history of the state. We have no income tax. People of New Hampshire appreciate that. Anytime i go northeast i dont find any place that is hospitable to taxpayers. We have the Second Lowest per capita tax burden in the entire country. We have Universal School choice. You have a lot of low income moms able to send their kids to the school of their choice. We have Charter Schools which are Public Schools but not run by the school district. If you took the 363,000 charter students in florida, disproportionately low income, racial and ethical ethnic minorities. If they were their own state, though students would rate one of the top five in the entire country. We deliver results in education. We understand that a four year break in iv university, that is not the only way to be successful. We have created workforce education as a centerpiece of our strategy to give people more opportunities and to help our economy because we need the skilled labor. We have cracked down on illegal immigration by doing things like banning sanctuary cities. We have kneecap bsg environment social governance. It is being used by private sectors to impose ideological agenda on society. These are policies that can never win at the ballot box. They are trying to do it through Asset Managers and wall street banks. We said no for our pension fund. They have an agenda. We said the rating agencies cannot use esg when they rate our state and municipal bonds. Were not going to be successful as an economy of every business becomes hyper politicized. We prohibited the purchase of land by the Chinese Communist party and its affiliates. They are trying to get farmland, land near military bases. We have enacted the parents bill of rights to confirm our view that parents have the fundamental right to direct the education and up ringing of their kids upbringing of their kids. We have made a dent in the opioid crisis. Talk about the cartels, you have to fight, you have to fight demand and from the treatment perspective. Florida enacted a coordinated Opioid Recovery Network in 27 counties. What it is, somebody goes into the hospital, they overdosed, if you put them right on the streets they will relapse, and eventually have a fatal overdose. But is pretty much what happens. When you have an intervention you provide support, you link them with the appropriate treatment. We have less than a 10 relapse rate of the people that have been involved in that. Yearoveryear, i think we are the only state in the country that had a decline in Overdose Deaths outright. Thats not happening anywhere in the country. We have taken on that issue and done very well with it. Then of course we had to make a decision when covid hit and while so many states were throwing the right to their citizens out the window, we had to make a decision, are we going to let our state the send into some found cheap faucian dystopian or will we empower people, so they can make the best decisions for themselves. Are we going to make sure that we save these businesses. We had to make decisions that were not popular at the time, certainly with the media note the bureaucracy, not popular with the other party and even within my own party. A leader has got to put into the interest of the people he represents, over protecting his own political high. I did not know what was going to happen to me. A lot of people thought you would not be for this world because you cut against the grain so much, but i was willing to let the chips fall. We were right on having kids in school, we were high right in making sure businesses could succeed and thrive, we were right on not imposing mandates on things like covert shots. Florida currently ranks number 14 economy by cnbc, number one. We are the number one state in america for new business and information. Eddie massachusetts raises the tax i get more florida residents chicago does something dumb, i get more florida residents. Our crime rate is at a 50 year low, even as crime has spiraled out of control in so many other areas around the country. We are number one for growth, amongst all larger states. We promised we would do things. We have delivered results for the people we represent. At the end of the day we can sit and talk about the posturing of this, all that matters is whether you are producing results. 2024 is make or break. Republicans need to stop making excuses. We are not going to get a mulligan on the 2024 election, we will either get the job done, we will chart a better path for this country or we will continue to dig ourselves deeper and deeper into a hole, as the nominee of the Republican Party i will get the job done for the voters, as a leader i will be someone you can be proud of, as your president i promise i will not let you down. Thank you all for having me. God bless you. [applause] we have a few minutes. Some people have been kind enough to give me questions to ask the very special guest here today. He mentioned israel and what we have all witnessed over the weekend, the horrific murders of children, women, adults, elderly, disabled, slitting the throats of children, what do you think the administration should be doing more the than what you would was president . Gov. Desantis it is important to be honest about what were dealing with. Israel from the late 1940s has been under siege. They agreed to a partition plan. The arabs rejected it and went to war. Israel won their independence. They would face an invasion. They preempted that. Then they were invented on yom kippur in 1973. They faced a series of waves of terrorist attacks for many decades. The root of the conflict is that palestinian arabs, they are not seeking their own state, they are seeking the annihilation and eradication of the jewish state, that is what hamas has pledged to do, that is even what has pledged to the. Israel has not just had a political dispute, they have people in the neighborhood who did not who do not believe they should exist, that would push all jews into the sea. They have every right to defend themselves. The administration has said that. The question is if you will have the staying power, people are already blaming israel for this. What is happening on these College Campuses is really disturbing, when he of Harvard Students signing some of these letters, right after the news of hamas and the butchering of these innocent people. You are going to sign your john hancock on that letter about time . What is going on with our society. Im a big supporter of israel. You can take whatever position you want, but to celebrate that is wrong. I think they need to say, we are in it for the long haul. I dont think there will be a lot well need to do militarily. They have their own army, they have their own defense. They never asked us to displace their own obligations. They will do it. We may have to provide additional support, like we have traditionally done. Mostly it is just the moral clarity to say, they dont have to live like this. They dont have to accept the risk that terrorists are going to come in and start beheading their babies. Eradicating hamas and the infrastructure, so the organization ceases to exist should be the goal. I would also take the half 6 billion i would have never given the fact given that to iran. Iran is the center of global terrorism, you will not have a rapprochement of them. Easing up on Oil Sanctions was a mistake. I would tighten up on that, to dry up money going into the uranian regime. You will have less terrorism,. Throughout the middle east there is no question about that. If we stepped up in florida because theres problems of people getting out of israel. The administration said maybe we will send people to europe. Dumping people into europe will not work. I have activated my Emergency Response personnel. We will be running flights from israel, to florida, for floridians who are trapped in israel and want to come home. I think every american should be able to get out of the war zone with the help of the u. S. Government. If they are not going to do it, the state of florida will step up and answer the call. [applause] former President Trump had a different point of view. He criticized the Prime Minister of being weak. He also mentioned the terrorist group is being very smart. My question is temperament. How important is temperament when we look at a candidate for the president of the u. S. . Gov. Desantis as a leader, youre in a situation as government governor, the buck stops with you, you will have to make decisions that are significant. What are you bringing to bear in terms of those decisions . What is your foundation . How are you seeing these issues . I think having a temperament that is agreeable is something that is very helpful. You dont want to be in a situation where you are making decisions, because somebody person slighted you and your mad at that. No the decisions are not about things people have done to you. The decisions are about how it will impact the people you represent. Donald trump is still mad that he congratulated biden in a tweet in 2020. Why bring that up when this nation is at war and is facing the worst attack theyve ever faced to try to have the dispute aired publicly . Thats not how you treat an ally, that is not how i would treat an ally. More importantly, for broader issues coming forward, i appointed people in florida who were against me in the primary, when i was running for governor in 2018. Thats kind of political season but i have to make a decision if this is somebody that can do a job and do it well for the people of florida, am i going to just let my personal, trump was right for the people . No i will not do that. You have to be bigger than a lot of this. Yet to look higher. A leader cannot get dragged into the muck of all the stuff that happens in society. Theres true north out there. How do you get to true north . What are you trying to accomplish . All the drama, all the stuff, the circus atmosphere, the politics that has developed into, none of that is helpful for accomplishing what you need to do. Rise above that, make clear eyed decisions. I think that is rooted some people have temperament to do that. I think i am somebody who does. I understand what happens in this business, i can predict what people are going to say before i do certain things. I chalk it all up to that is just politics. I dont let it get to me personally. I dont mind the attacks, as much as i get them. I understand that that just goes with the territory. Im not going to let that, even if i was bothered by it, i would not let that color my decisions when it comes to big issues. Those decisions are going to be made with synthesizing information. They will be good, solid, crisp decisions. Its going to be about your best interests. It will not be about my issues. [applause] its on the front pages today. The murders continue. People are losing their lives every day in ukraine. Initially, you were criticized by some republicans in the position early on. Im just wondering if you could give us an update on how you assess the ukraine situation and our role, and our involvement there . Gov. Desantis what i said has been proven correct. Russia is not going to dislodge the ukrainian government. They will not have a belarus style puppet state. That is ukrainian victory and the russian loss. The same idea that us paying salaries for bureaucrats in ukraine will lead to russia doing a world war ii type of surrender, that is not going to end up happening. They now have a policy that is rudderless. There is no clear conception of how this has been brought in for a landing. There has been a lot of money put in. More importantly, it is the lack of concrete objective that they have still not been able to articulate. But there is some republicans that are saying, go in to moscow i do these things, trying to create a wider or, it would be a huge mistake. We are 30 treat 32 trillion in debt. Well send american troops to be involved to adjudicate the dondas . No. The big failure of American Foreign policy since the end of the cold war is our engagements have not had crisp resolutions. I know it is not always easy but you have to know what you are achieving. Then you have to say, here is what is going to take it is going to take to achieve that. I see a policy that is directionless. Thisll go on for another four or five years. A lot of people have died. Four or five years later, are the facts on the ground going to look different than they are now. If they are not, we have to find a way to have a resolution. It will not reward russia for its reckless conduct, but will recognize the sustainable peace is in our interest. I would put pressure on russia through energy and some of these other means, that the administration has not been willing to do. Energy fuels russias war machine. They dont have much else going in terms of their economy, other than that. If that is something that you are really concerned about, whether it is europe, or the u. S. , we have to come together. Europe should not have to worry about russia for energy. We should be able to provide energy. We have enough natural gas to supply the entire world if we did it. Thats the way you put pressure on them to do. But, their policy is not delivering what the rhetoric suggests. The question is, are they going to be able to articulate a clear mission. The administration and the Democratic Congress wants to spend more money for ukraine. They believe they need the money now more than ever. The house is in the hands of the republican, was indicated, more than 100 members saying we will not give more money to ukraine. Would support that initiative . Gov. Desantis i think what a lot of republicans are saying, we need a Clear Strategy before we are going to the lawyer any additional resources. That is totally reasonable to request that and to say what were those resources and what will they do Going Forward . From the very beginning i said we cannot be writing blank checks. Its not something that will end up working. We have seen how that money has been spent. Define the mission. I think that is where the republicans are landing with respect to this conflict. As a former member of congress, seeing how they are dysfunctional right now, where they dont have a leader, how does that affect your campaign . Gov. Desantis well, look, the contrast between what is happening in washington, where it is high on political theater and low on resolve results is the complete opposite of what we have done in florida. We speak softly, but carry a big stick. We deliver big results. We dont do political or doing things for fanfare. Were not creating any callous intrigue. There are things we have to do. We just deliver on that. That is what they need to be worried about in washington. You have battles over leadership. It has happened before. If if if that is going to happen what is the result of that . How are we better off as a result of going through this . I see a bunch of people with chickens with her head cut off. I dont see any direction here. I dont see any plan to be able to make the country better. If its just about you creating a ruckus, or being able to get yourself in the limelight, that is not an appropriate reason to be doing some of the stuff. If florida fashion with florida, i dont have any time in florida i dont have any time for the entertainment. I have to focus on what i have to get done. What did i promise to do, how do i bring that for a landing . That goes for a lot of things legislatively, executive. We had one hurricane earlier. We are always on guard for hurricane season. We ready to go if we have other contingencies that happen. Washington it is just the opposite of that. Its not going to bode well for the already Going Forward if they dont get party Going Forward if they dont get their act together. Its important for who controls the house and senate, will be who was the president ial nominee. If it is me we will be able to sweep and laypeople like we did in florida. If its donald trump, you will see down ballot effects that will make holding the house difficult. One of the issues that the republican candidates talked about top to bottom are struggling with is abortion. With the repeal of roe v. Wade. You signed into law, a sixweek band, there are candidates talking 15 week bans, 12, 25. Do you think there will be any consensus with you and your colleagues on how to come up with that . Gov. Desantis i think this is something that is more of a bottomup issue. What flies in iowa and texas will not be the same in new england. There is disagreement on the issue. That is the reality. People are saying what we do federally. First of all you have to have societal agreements to be in the conversation. You have a lot of disagreement. The state of florida, we have the heartbeat productions, with all the exceptions people avast four. That is based on science when you can detect heart beat. Other states in the southeast have done even more. Then you have california, new york and probably massachusetts, more liberal on it. It will likely work its way that way. To have a societal consensus, with the absence of a societal consensus the idea that the republicans will solve the issue federally. I told people not to bet the chips on not. You mentioned in your opening remarks that you would go after the drug cartel in mexico, with military personnel, you go right into the country. How would you go about doing that . Gov. Desantis look, do you think we could have this many opioid deaths and this many illegal aliens coming into our country of mexico was 100 working to stop it . Of course mexico is, at minimum, derelict in their duty. Their relationship between the drug cartels and their government is not something that is ideal. The reality is we are being invaded by these cartels. They are bringing poison in and they are killing our people. As commanderinchief, you have the right to respond to an american lives are being taken. You have a responsibility to do it. What are we going to say . We do another 50,000, 200,000 a year . Were also going to do Maritime Operations to intercept some of the precursor chemicals coming in from china. China gives the chemicals, cartels make it. Were going to categorize the cartels as Something Like a Foreign Terrorist Organization or transnational criminal organization, giving authority or marks to how we will approach it. I saw, when i was down there recently, most of the borders wide open. You have places where there is wall or the steel beams. The cartels will cut through the steel beams. These guys are fixing this wall. I like what are you doing . They just cut through. Now the Border Patrol are told to stand back. Stanback . They have a backpack full of fentanyl, they are knifing through reinforced steel and were going to let them do that . Well have force their. You break in, you will end up. Senior maker. Meeting your maker. If you do that a few times, we will see a change in behavior. I will not sit here and let 18monthold babies die because of fentanyl residue. Ill do something about it. [applause] a final question. One of your opponents, the former president says the 2020 election was stolen from him, do you agree . Ive said many times if that is true, he was the sitting president of the United States and let that happen to him. I would never let that happen. As governor what i sit and let Something Like that happen . So, on the one hand, who either say that, then it is like why dont you do something about it . If we didnt do something in 2020, how will you solve the problem as a private citizen, rage tweeting from maralago . There is just no way. Its an untenable position he has taken. I also think that view hurt our candidates in the 2022 election, when they were running on that. Part of it is you are looking to the past. Part of it is, you are indulging in the stuff. Now i will say, because i was asked about this. I think i was on bill marrs show. I have to point out to him, democrats said 16 was stolen. They said russia stole the election. We had a massive investigation on russia collusion. There was no there there at all. So, im not going to sit here and say that trump is unique in this. Hillary clinton to this day says the election was stolen from her. My pledge to the republicans were going to decide the nomination is, you nominate me, i will get the job done. Ill make sure we have whatever we need in place to be able to get the job done. I will not make excuses. I dont like all the mail ballots going out. When they dont have accurate voter rolls. Theres huge problems. We fix it in florida. It still persists. Do what you need to do to protect your folks but dont whine about it. You have to go out there and make it happen. [applause] just a softball question. When you become the president ial nominee for president name two or three people who would be on your list that you would be interested in. Anybody have any suggestions . Gov. Desantis i get asked a lot ep, vp secretarygeneral, the moment he put out a name the media will attack them. The last thing i want to do is put some money out there to get smeared for no reason. Some of it is a bit presumptuous. I have a lot of work to do. Here is what i would say what youre looking for in terms of quality. Its the First Executive decision you make as a president. Youre not president yet, for that running mate decision is the one, first order decision you make. When it has to be, it has to be someone when you pick and roll out the press conference, everyone is here, regardless of what you think about your views that president can be president , that person can do the job. That is the threshold that youve got to reach one you are talking about a running mate. That has not always been the case in the past. There has been decisions made. I would say with biden, but others, where there was questions about that. Thats going to be number one. Number two should be somebody who shares the broad governing philosophy and agrees with the Broad Strokes of the agenda. You dont want to win the election, then down the line, fate strikes and you cant continue. Someone steps in, they go with a different direction and you have to go with the voters with the voter said. I would put those two miles ahead of anything else. The idea that we will try to have a running mate. This ethnicity or that part of the country are all that. Get the big decision right. This is somebody that can walk into the oval office and do the job. This is somebody that can bring a set of values and convictions with them, that are going to be reflected by what the voters ratify in november 2024. We have time for a couple of questions. I know karen from aarp has questions for the governor. Well wait for the mic. Thank you for taking my question governor. Welcome to our beautiful state, thank you for being here. My question has to do with the caregivers of this nation. We have, currently, 48 million americans who are serving as caregivers to their loved ones. They are unpaid. They are saving us 600 billion annually. So, my question to you is if you are elected president , what would you do to help the lives of these caregivers, and give them back some freedom, because they dont have any right now in the sense that they are juggling their responsibilities to family, to themselves, and to the person for whom they are caring for. Gov. Desantis thank you for the question. That is something we deal with in florida quite a bit, given our population. A couple of things. One, inflation is putting more pressure on all of these things. How are you going to be able to make ends meet, when prices are going up the way they have done . When i say they say inflation was 9 , understand, some things have gone up 50 or 100 , particularly with medical help. That will be a big relief acrosstheboard. The other thing we are going to do is model Something Like what we have done in florida for different types of social services. If someone goes into florida now for welfare benefits, my wife led the charge. We have created a program called hope florida, we have the care portal. A lot of these are single mothers who are struggling. Instead of giving them a check and sending them off we put them in the portal. The portal is populated with people plugged in, charities, churches, businesses, other volunteers. Somebody may need temporary housing. You can have a charity show up the next day. They dont come back for Government Services at that white because they are on a pathway to independence. The similar thing to whether it is caregivers, veterans to have an ability where your heart is sometimes people dont know what is all out there. As a veteran i got a packet of stuff. I got a packet of stuff i dont know how anybody made sense of this. It is just bureaucrat speak. All the veterans groups can plug and that is a model that we are going to use. Government facilitating the alleviation the alleviation of problems in society, without going through your accuracy. We know the limits of bureaucracy and that it creates problems. The role of government is to create a place where all of these other great portions of our society can be involved and you will see really really good stuff. We have shown that in florida and taken that model and we have it for welfare and moved it to other affairs and have a department of Elder Affairs and we are moving to the department of Veterans Affairs as well. With veterans it will save lives because these guys get what they need, we do things for people with posttraumatic stress like service dogs. They get paired with veterans and the suicide rates go down tremendously, because they are trained to assist. There are all kinds of possibilities. That is harnessing society and energy and the spirit of our communities in a way that bureaucracy cannot do. Other questions . Wait for the mic and then identify yourself. If i can put a pitch in, we need more personal care attendants, they are poorly trained and there is no advancement and the wages are inadequate. If you address all three, will have more personal care attendants, People Living longer and healthier and living independently. [applause] good afternoon, i have a question written down here. China is deploying the technology around the world to dominate Foreign Policy and global economics. How would you treat American Technology . Would you regulate and break them up or support and encourage them in global competition . Thats a good question, it depends on what were talking about. The broader issue is that we are in a competition with china that we need to win. We will be doing more research and develop through our Defense Department so that we are getting ahead of them with the use of ai in defense products. And defense systems. It is important that we win that and they are doing that, clearly, we have to get ahead of them. We also need to ringback key things that went over to china. When covid hit, everything we needed was made in china. There were certain Things International wellbeing and security that we dont want to be made in china. They steal our technology and we should do something about that. How you regulate, it depends. There is a case with the Supreme Court and in florida and texas on free speech rights on social media. We created a mechanism where individuals would have protections against being discriminate against on platforms like facebook and twitter and the reason we did that is because these are kellys advertising to the public that they are open platforms, not publishers but platforms, why they get Liability Protection from the government, where they have the thumb on the scale where they face one side of the political spectrum. And were going to give you the ability to give you eight Consumer Fraud suit. I think that means more speech, not less speech, we will see what the Supreme Court has to say. If there publishers they can publish whatever you want. You have no right to be on a newspaper. If its a platform and they are advertising being open and not applying their rules fairly then i think that they are to result that. Thats something that is not related to how we do it in china. Social media is a net negative on our society with how it affects children and my children, they dont have social media, but they know how to grab devices. My wife, they leave a phone out and they grab it. My son is five and he can get on amazon and check whether his Jacksonville Jaguars football has arrived yet. And he knows what has not arrived, and im thinking to myself as a parent its like man, this is a serious problem. In terms of regulation of new Technology LikeArtificial Intelligence we have to be careful with how we use government. I want Artificial Intelligence intelligence cannot turn the clock back. Its here. If it supplements immunity thats great. I dont want it to displace immunity. There may be a need to have guardrails about the appropriate uses for society, but what i would not want to do is regulated in a way that gives an advantage to the companies. There are only a few that do it and make it harder for other people to complete. We want competition in that space and i cant tell you what we would need to do in january 2025 to protect society if it came to that, because theres going to be so much that happens between now and then. They will be a different conversation in one way or another for that. You have to be careful, but we have to recognize that there are pitfalls and perils associated with things like Artificial Intelligence. I dont want that to overwhelm us as human beings as individuals. One final question from the governor. Just stand and wait for the mic. Im a student here and there are several other students in the audience along with other people as well. My question is what is your appeal to young people, especially younger conservatives, who feel disenchanted with the republican establishment or politics in general and want to have the life their parents may have had or the lives they want for themselves. Good luck to you at all the students were here. One, you want somebody who beats the republican establishment, here he is. We took on issues, we slough sacred cows in florida, and we did things that the public responded to publicly. If you lead with purpose and conviction, we dont kowtow to interest groups, we won by 20 points, a 1. 5 million vote margin. What is your future, we have to get the economy in order and we need to restore the American Dream. Right now, youre starting out, as a young person. I mean, if you have Student Loans then you are in the workforce and with inflation and housing costs, you cant make it work. If you want to have a family in your 20s right now, youre not going to be able to make it work. We fix it for those folks starting up. You dont have an incentive to bust your tail to get ahead and if you end up further behind. Our country is not going to work. We are going to make sure that people who are working hard to get ahead again, getting a handle on inflation, stop spending so much money, i vetoed waste will spending in florida and pay down 25 of our states debt. Washington is a tougher beast, but we really have not had a president that has pushed back on spending since Ronald Reagan in the 80s, he vetoed some of the bills for spending too much. Weve got to get back to that and do the regulatory release regulations, get government off peoples backs, the Federal Reserve needs to be reined in, its been a total failure what the fed has done, they printed way too much money in response to covid and when it was obvious, Milton Friedman said the if you do that, you get inflation 1820 months later. This Federal Reserve said 12 month into covid, inflation is transitory, and you have to unlearn Milton Friedman. Of course youre going to get that. They had their head in the sand and they have been hiking rates so now youre over 8 for a 30 year fixed rate for mortgage. How do you go from the average home price in 2019 compared to the average home price today . Your monthly mortgage payments is payment is over twice as much today as it was then. Is anybodys income going up twice as much as it did from there . Course its not. I think that is a burden on society. That absolutely kills the American Dream for young people, its not like its easy to afford a home anyways in your 20s. You have to save and make decisions. To now be paying the Interest Rates with where they are, it totally ruins things. Were also going to do Something Different with student months. I disagree with having taxpayers pay for people Students LoansStudent Loans, i dont think a truck driver should have two paper somebody who has 100,000 in debt with a degree in zombie studies. Were not going to do that. I also understand that these colleges have incentivizes students to take out more loans, raising tuition, keeping you in for five or six years, they like that. The administrative bloat that has occurred in the modern era is incredible. It has not made universities better. The responsibility is to have the loans be back by the universities so that there is an incentive to make sure that they are putting you through program where you will be able to begin for the employed and if you cant make that, then you know, harvard is basically a hedge fund with the university attached to it. They can afford all of stuff, were going to do that and were going to change and were going to force changes in academia because there is a lot of flaws in Higher Education and we should focus on things that are going to be beneficial for the students Going Forward. Were going to look to do that. I think that will help restrain the cost, that will go down. Work owing we are going to look into Incentivizing States like in florida where our university does not raise tuition. If you are interested in space penn state student, you can go for 40,000 dollars or less. Where an outraged number 5 ranked number five among begin diversity since order, Florida State is in the top 15, wall street journal did a ranking of universities, public and private university of florida was ranked 15th, the first public university, the only one in the top 15 according to wall street journal. There are other good ones in virginia or whatever, but how many of them go for 6,400 a year and if you qualify you probably qualify for the Bright Future scholarship which gives you 100 of tuition or 75 percent depending on your scores. Your basically graduating with no debt at all, and outofstate tuitions is 17,000, less than instate in a lot of places. We have been serious about safety, supply supply support and funding, but you cant history but you cannot just keep raising tuition. You need to prune your bureaucracy. Why should you pay more tuition for another 10 ddi officers . The students would rather pay less and not have those officers. We want to have good incentives. Florida shows it can be done. You did not need to go 100,000 in debt to get decent color great. That should be something that we want to do nationwide. [applause] christ, not, not, lets go. , on outcome on up, lets go. [indiscernible] [indiscernible] [indiscernible] [indiscernible] cracks that they have the artificial turf at that time or after . Was it artificial turf or grass . That put the turf in [indiscernible] every other house on the waterfront in the last two years, purchase, build, knocked out again. Thank you, thank you. [indiscernible] [indiscernible] there you go, you wont be the only one. Sure. Ill get one with you. [indiscernible] how many eggs that they handout . Wax theyve done great work. Ok. Right here. Your lawyer . Ok. How are you doing . [indiscernible] [indiscernible] [indiscernible] go, have a good one, thank you so much. [indiscernible] [indiscernible] [indiscernible] [indiscernible] every time something happens in chicago i served in karnataka on the navy, it was one of those People Places i had ever been, but you have to go over the bay bridge and you can only do by car. Theyre having homeless and drug problems in some of those places. I was surprised to see that, because i thought it was just l. A. And san francisco. Thank you very much. Thank you, god bless you, buddy. [indiscernible] we need to reagan moment, and we will do that. A reagan moment and we will do that. Thank you, appreciate it. [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, [indiscernible] ok, and you go here . Where in connecticut . [indiscernible] i spent four years in new haven. Still my sick favorite ci ever had. Seats i have ever had. [indiscernible] do you have a military connection . Ok, yeah. We landed on a station in north island, and the difference between iraq and the Pacific Ocean end of thing, it was so good. I had never been out there, i grew up in florida. I checked into officer quarters and the first thing i look for was airconditioning. You dont need airconditioning here, and i would a window like you dont need that, we have screened windows and photos, florida, but there werent bunks there. It was fresh and nice. Great area. Did i do that one yet . Yes you can. All right, we got it. [indiscernible] a lot has changed in naples since then. Thank you. [indiscernible] thank you, thank you. I am pleased to report that we have content confirmed our first flight to leave israel and bring home floridians tracked over there and we will have times on that shortly, but we anticipate our first correct people being able to get back to florida on sunday. We are pleased to see the progress they, and we think the Israeli Government for working for us. We know they have a lot of irons in the fire and theyre not letting any flight all flight takeoff. This is important and we have a great relationship and we can get that done. Great work, and we will keep doing that until people are say. Any questions . Vivek ramaswamy said that the establishment politicians have selective moral outrage and said that outrage is being turned by wealthy donors. How do you think those comments reflect on his ability to be present . President . One, i dont know what to establish what republicans think. Im not an establishment republican. But the idea that anyone is supporting israel because of those considerations is not accurate. With me, we have the best ally we have in the middle east, great economic ties, great cultural ties, and its a unique country because that represents the cradle of western civilization, the judeochristian values. The relationship is authentic and deep. As governor of florida we had the second largest israeli is American Population in the country. Israeli American Publishing in the country. We have been a haven for orthodox jews. When new yorkers were coming down in covid, my vote is for like im going to vote the other way. I was like dont worry about that, and theyve been great friends and supporters. But thats beyond that. Its not based on that. I think that is a trope. I think it is something that you dont want to be saying if youre running for president of the United States. Does President Trump need to walk some of his comments saying i stand with bbn praising the military . And praising the military . We have donald trump on the teleprompter reading what is on there, and the donald trump when he gets off the phone. Thats the real donald trump, when he starts speaking about those things. He attacks netanyahu after the country suffered the worst attack it has had in its modern history when they have created a war government and are preparing to do a Ground Invasion in gaza, and he did that because netanyahu congratulated biden in november. Thats why. He hates netanyahu because of that. That is not the thats because with him, not the greater good of what is really starting to work american security. It is fine to clean up and do all that. I would say go out and get rid of your teleprompter, dont use that as a crutch. Show up in debates for two hours and then we will be able to see where he is really coming from. We are seeing over the course of every interview, and every time every time his time off the teleprompter he has to clean things up. I want to say this is a different donald trump. In 2016, and hes out there parts from the country, doing all this. Now, its just a different guy. And its sad to say. Speaking of that, donald trump does not do what you just did, taking questions. He is not going to the national debates. He does not go to the debates, he attacks the governors of New Hampshire and iowa, what im getting at is given all of that, if he does actually win these early states, what does that do to the future of iowa and New Hampshire, these states that guard their status jealously, if you can block those rights of passage and still waiting, what does it mean for the future . I was talking to some folks and i was here for the summer and it was great, but New Hampshire was enjoying the summer, is pitiful. People were saying that most people have not thought about it. The people that think that they are entitled to the nomination, thats going to burn them, if youre not going to debate thats going to hurt you. If youre not going to show up thats going to hurt you. We are on the tour in iowa, i have done mostly, i will be the only candidate to do that, we will be lighting up the town halls at the house parties in New Hampshire over the next hundred days. You have to earn this. Something that they expect, they want to check the tires. And theres this saying in New Hampshire that a candidate was added to bait and a quarter was there and someone asked what you thought of them and she said Something Like i like a lot when he said, am i going full term, is the only the third time ive met him. Voters present be taken for granted, and by the way it is not debating us. He lost the debate to joe biden in october of 2020. I remember, i had a big party at the governors residence, the whole room assignment, we do not we did not know what he witnessed. He could not be biden in that debate. Our voters want to know, were going to have a candidate that can go the distance and get the job done. This is part of what goes into that, that you could take questions of people, and you have the energy to get this job done, were not going to get the democrats by adopting the basement strategy. That does not work. Youre not going to see that. Youre going to see that as i get closer, we will dashboard up in New Hampshire last night, they appreciated that we were there, thats something we remember, and in florida, i was the first number, we had 67 counties, most of these counties where if youre not the sort you have not heard them before. I was the first government to do Public Safety checks and other stuff in those counties. I would have people come to my commands who had been in those counties their entire life and never saw governor schalke 04, and you have to care about everyone, and that was not why i did it, we were getting margins that were like assad. If you dont go for a side view get shot, you get 95 . Thats not real margins. We were getting 92 in some of these rural areas and republicans are going to do that anyways, but not that at that level. The difference was that we had shown up and taken the time to go to those communities. I think it is going to make a difference, i think all of this is so fluid. Trumppence support that is not going to work, if youre looking for New Hampshire, half of that is movable and you will see that move as we get closer to the situation. Jim jordan has just won the internal gop speaker candidate out. They have yet to vote on the floor, what is your reaction . Jim is a friend, a good guy, i wish him well. We will see if that translates into whatever they need. I will say that these guys have to get their act together. Chaos for the sake of chaos does not work. If these guys philip there doing a good job, thats fine. Whats the result of that, they need to presume to produce results, and for no we dont do any of this nonsense. We work hard and we deliver for people. Thats what the public wants to see. We need a new direction, but are we going to be able to do what we said we are going to do . And sometimes people dont say what theyre going to do when they get in. The proof for be in the pudding and jim has a good worldview in terms of the proper government, but they need to get their act together and start functioning as a country here, and the trauma and the chaos, it has to be over. What about his comments on israel, when put in said it was genius and savvy, why not condemn him then, you say this is a different donald trump. Class i dont think i was even asked about that at the time. Its just a difficult situation where we have is going and its also not going out and participating in these events and he has been on the, from sderot, and he gets off the tell proctor and things like this happen. It is. How is it different . If if you see all these unsavory comments, i dont do that, i conduct myself differently. People have seen that for a long time. I like netanyahu, i met him last time i was in israel. I think he is a good leader and i like him. But even if i did not, i would not go out and impugn him while they are under siege and their country israel will never be the same after this. This is a massive turning point, look what 9 11 did to our country. This is orders of magnitude more than that. That is not your role when you are talking about an ally who is at war. And people can judge me on that. There was a question out there about what role temperament plays in being an executive, and the temperament is about being able to rise above some of those instincts and understanding that you have to deliver the right message at the right time and there are some things that might not be appropriate to be doing. Theyre going to do what they have to do. But is that helpful for the cause . I dont think it was. Do you think that trump trumps comments could cost him . Im not a prognosticator. I think with the primary what it will come down to is republicans knowing that we wont get to mulligan on 2024, we know we have to win. They understand that donald trump brings a lot of voters against them in ways that are not necessary. I want a lot of voters that did not vote for him, so i think that is part of it. They want to see someone who is a strong leader. Im the only one who has produced acrosstheboard, thats what they see with me. They see the chaos around the world and in washington, and they see constant drama in politics and they see very few results. They walk a leader who will cut through that and deliver results. I think it is going to be more on those things. I think thats all these comments, it does not im not saying it does not impact the new cycle, but people are going to make those fundamental choices when the time comes. Governor, considering that members of your teams are making their pitch to top gop donors, what would you pitch to them as to why they should favor you . Im the only person who could get this done and deliver results. You can look at the numbers like in iowa, trump and me are ahead of everybody else. If i was not in the picture, both of those orders would go to trump. They would not go to haley. And people need somebody who can appeal to the broad crosssection of the Party Faithful and the primary electorate. That means yes, some of the voters who want to change for trump, but the core conservative voters that helped power him in in the first place, some will be with him through thick and thin. Most people have conservative principles and want America First policies and they need something who has been in a fight that they know will fight back on their behalf. I am the only guy that can fit that bill. If you want to be able to get behind somebody who is going to go the distance, im the guy whos going to do that. I have had the kitchen sink thrown at me, more money thrown at me than all the other candidates combined, more tax from the left and everything. And yet here we are, exceeded what we promised we would do in iowa and we will continue to do that, and yesterday and today really starts our New Hampshire blitz, and youre going to see, its not going to happen immediately, are going to see it. People have been doing this since the 1970s, and they are more interested in supporting me than others and people that are grizzled veterans same you are doing what you need to do to be able to get this done. That is really what it means. People can support me if they want, but lets not kid ourselves that the nominee for the gop will either be donald trump or pay me, there is not a path out for anybody else. A politics reporter joining us via zoom this morning. Updates on the week ahead on the campaign trail. Thanks for being here this morning. What is happening on the campaign trail this week . Guest a lot is happening. From this headed to new york from one of his legal cases. Trump is headed to new york from one of his legal cases, ron desantis to south carolina, some candidates to iowa. At the end of the month, all candidates will be headed to las vegas for the republican jewish coalition, which in the rate wake of what is going on in israel has become increasingly important. They have started releasing fundraising numbers. We get to see where they are headed. There is a lot going on. Host dive into this fundraising numbers. Always a lot in this group arts. What is the take away so far . Guest donald trump has raised the most. Tim scott has a lot of cash on hand as well, which is not incredibly surprising, given how much he got into the race with. He did not raise as much of some of the other candidates that he has more cash on hand. Ron desantis has less than previous quarters. Nikki haley, we have seen a rise in fundraising numbers, which speaks to her campaigns argument that she has momentum and that she is the one who is coming up ahead. Host we talked about the week ahead. The candidates were recently in New Hampshire tackling to voters. What did we find out from there visits to that primary state . Guest New Hampshire has been interesting. It is an area that a lot of them have not been as focused on. All of the candidates have been making on iowa. We have seen ron desantis going to every county in iowa. His campaign has maintained that that is where donald trump is at his weakest. On the flipside, Chris Christie has solely focus on New Hampshire. That is where he sees his opportunity. As we get closer to the primaries, we are seeing candidates ranch out and go to these other early voting states that they have not been to as much. Ron desantis came over, talked about freedom that these events. That will be important with New Hampshire and iowa voters but it is also an opportunity to win over independents in these states. It would be interesting to see how big of an effort they put into New Hampshire versus iowa. Host we are talking about independents. Rfk junior is talking about winning over independents. A story you wrote about his campaign, time readying attacks over rfk junior as concern over a spoiler candidacy goes. Why is donald trump worried about our of plea junior . Guest majority of the polls show that rfk junior is more popular among republicans and democrats. It makes sense that trumps team would keeping an eye on him. This is partially because of kennedys focus on covid vaccines that have pulled republican support and at the same time made democrats where he weary. What we are seeing in the weeks after my peace is published is more animosity from the republican side. The rnc, a few hours after my peace was published, started launching attacks against kennedy. The trump team has told me they plan to remind voters that he has historically liberal views. This will be something to keeping an eye on as we head into a general. Will an independent spoil the race for either candidate . At this point, it looks like trumps team is more nervous than bidens. Host i want to look ahead to november 8, third Republican Debate set in miami. What will you be watching for . Guest the first thing is who makes the debate stage. One of the arguments i have been hearing from these campaigns is the field will naturally would allow. Will hello live will hurd recently dropped out, endorsed nikki haley. Some others seem close to dropping out. Who will make the debate stage is going to be back, but at the same time, i will be looking for if anyone can really break out. These last two, even as nikki haley has argued she broke out, so has ron desantis it has not been shown in the poll numbers. I am looking to see if anyone can use these debates and get serious momentum, not just to get into a secondplace but take it to trump. Host semaphore.
