Speaker of the house. Divisions among the gop remain and a full floor vote is on pause. All this as fighting intensifies between israel and thomas and a million residents of gaza are under order to evacuate with an Israeli Ground invasion expected to be imminent. This morning on the washington journal, we want your thoughts on both stories. You can call us at 202 7488001 on the republican line, democrats can reach us at 202 7488000. Independents on 202 7488002. And if you like to text us, you can do that at 202 7488003. Just make sure to include your name and where you are from. We will start with what is going on on capitol hill. Have an article here from the Washington Examiner at the house left on for the weekend as jim jordan sought to shore up the court for the speaker bid. That by several of the reporters from the Washington Examiner and we are joined by one of them this morning for who is a congressional reporter for the Washington Examiner. Reese, good morning. Thanks for having me on. Host explain what happened yesterday. Guest yesterday the house went back into a closeddoor meeting. A ballot nomination between jim jordan and offer scott of georgia who got in the race one hour before the candidate form and they tried to nominate a new speaker candidate. Jim jordan came out in the top, receiving 124 votes. And so he is now the republican nominee for speaker of the house. But he is not does not have the sport to become speaker because it requires 217 votes to get speaker. When asked on the second ballot if he would support jim jordan on the floor, that vote was only 152 to 55. 55 people said they do they would not support jim jordan on the house floor. Host go ahead. Guest democrats are not going to be voting for jim jordan so it is up to republicans and he does not have the votes. Host what was the mood among republicans after the vote he did not have enough votes to win this ship outright . Guest there are some people that call on Kevin Mccarthy and said jim jordan would be speaker and would get the votes and there were other people, Thomas Matthew was confident jim jordan would become speaker especially after a weekend to shore up that support. Then there were other members, the more moderate marin moderate members of the Republican Caucus not so confident in him as a speaker. They maybe dont want jim jordan to be speaker, especially the older veterans remembering this older jim jordan from 2016 and 2019 and that is how they remember him by or if you are a moderate you know jim jordan as the same kind of way, might not go back in your district especially if joe biden won the district in 2020. Host scott, a republican who got 81 votes after throwing his name with agreement zero preparation and not much of her to drum up support. What was behind that . Why does that what does that tell you about where the gop is right now . Guest he got 81 votes and went into conference telling reporters i dont want to be speaker. He was just running as a protest vote for people to vote against jim jordan. He got in an hour before the race began and was telling people he did not want to be speaker so 81 votes he got was protest votes, no pro scott votes there were antijim jordan votes. It will be a tough battle that jordan has to climb in order to regain some of that support or get it in general because you need 217 and he has quite a ways away from to 17 right now. Host what are some of the criticism of jordan from those who do not support them . Are they all movable in their votes . Guest yeah. I think it varies a little bit. Moderates, especially those who want president joe biden, resident joe biden when their district. Jim jordan is a guy who is really wellknown, even if you dont follow politics heavily you know who jim jordan is. He i think they dont want to be tied to kind of some of his past policies or whatever and dont want to be tied to that because the districts are purple or blue and boating could hurt them in reelection. They are also worried about some of the votes he might have them take if he is speaker whether speaker. That is one of the worries from some of the moderates. Talking to the veteran members of the House Republican conference, a lot of them will likely support jordan on the floor because they respect the institution but a lot are upset because they see jordan supporters, whether it be thomas mackey, beth miller, however, steve scully said the nomination, they kind of tainted and said we would never vote for Steve Scalise, we are voting for jim jordan, he is our guy, we are the the guy we want. They see it as jordan didnt come out and endorse Steve Scalise but he was unable to have some of the fellow colleagues behind that were supportive supporting him. He said if you cant get them to follow you on some thing like a speaker race, how are you going to get them to follow you on voting for continued resolution, stuff that matters to the country more so than electing a speaker. I think that is also a fear and worry. Host what does jim jordans we can look like in terms of drumming up the support he needs . Guest it will be a lot talking to members oneonone. Members have gone home so he will be making calls. His allies will probably make calls trying to rally up that support and then you also have i think his allies are thinking after they take this weekend, a lot of people know jim jordan and gop grassroots loves jim jordan and that is something he has going for him when these republican members go on to their districts. And they Start Talking to constituents, constituents might start, especially the republican constituents, might be like talk to jordan, try to get them in the air, vote for jim jordan and i think that is something that going home jim jordan would rally for under this public pressure of a, i think that is something they maybe can see, but again it is still, even if we take the 51 vote, cut it in half because of the private ballots, because some of those will probably still support jordan on the floor, you have 25 people that said they will not vote for jordan on the floor. That is a huge decline. What is the plan for a four book ash for vote. Any sense of when that might happen or whether we can expect a multiround situation like we had with the last speaker vote . Guest it is sounding like it will happen around tuesday. Monday is the as they can have a vote but i think what you will see his people back home from the weekend will fly in on monday, probably go to conference, and Start Talking like do we make any change for this weekend, to have more support, can i take to the floor . After that, even if he does not have the support, i think going to the floor, trying to see where who he needs to flip, where he is lacking, and try to hone those people in and talk to them, rally them together. I think that is what we might see so you might see a couple. I dont see jordan not taking this to the floor. Scalise didnt take it to the floor when it was evident he didnt have the votes. I dont see jordan do that doing that. I dont think you will see a 15 round situation like january because Kevin Mccarthy had the support of 90 of the conference. There were a few holdouts that did not want to vote but what you will see what jordan is maybe two to five rounds and then he drops out and he goes we will be back to square one or he gets a vote. That is a possibility he will get the votes. He can rally supporters, may be rally the holdouts, and maybe he can get the votes. The math is tough for them are now so there is a possibility he does get the votes on the second or third ballot. Once he finds out who cast me, get them on the record. Host where are the democrats in all of this . I look at an article in politico that there are some democratic centrists reaching out to the speaker pro tem, seeing if there might be a deal to be made. What are you hearing about that . Guest i think this is a legitimate possibility. There are there is a realistic chance no one in the republican conference can get 217 votes right now with just republicans alone. That is a really four people can take anyones chances. Anyone person could wake up one day and be like i dont a vote for this person. So theres a possibility that republicans are going to have to work with democrats to get a speaker elected. There are already talked about this, we have kind of seen that happen. The Republican Governance Group might try to work through the aisle and talk about candidates and try to get some elected i can get 217 but after a little powersharing agreement. I think thats a realistic thing we could see. Steve scalise can get to 17, maccarthy got ousted by his own members, so i think well have to see probably is some kind of powersharing agreement and that is a realistic thing that could happen. Host what you wrote watching for the next couple days . Guest i will be looking to see if any of the holdouts flip. We know who a couple are, we dont know who all 51 are but i think you could see some of those whether it is reports of people or anything like that, once you start seeing those flip, that is a huge indicator jordans plan is working or even the other way, if people go back and start losing, you got people saying im not voting for jordan , one representative said she would have to reevaluate her support for jim jordan and that was a flip there that people are going to have to watch for and start typing that. I think it is seen when members are saying back in the district and where is the support going. Is he losing support . Is he gaining support . Is this thing the same . Come monday or tuesday, especially monday, we will be able to talk to these members in person and see what is going on and see where we are and where we stand and it is possible he could get to 17. Host rhys gorman, congressional reporter at the Washington Examiner. I hope you can get some rest this morning and thank you very much. Guest i will try. Host we would love to hear your thoughts on this topic as well as the war going on between israel and hamas. Our numbers are 202 7488001 for republicans, democrats at 202 7488000, and independents, at independents at 202 7488002, and of course you can text us at 202 7488003. We were speaking about the democratic role in all of this and House Democrats spoke after the republican counterparts rejected jim jordan as the nominee for speaker or at least for the full floor vote. Heres part of what represented Hakeem Jeffries had to say. Because we are hair as members of the house of representatives to make life better for everyday americans, not play political games. [applause] House Democrats will continue to fight for lower cost, better paying jobs, saver community, reproductive freedom, defend democracy, fix our broken immigration system, protect the rights to vote and build an economy that works for everyday economy americans for the middle up middle out and bottom up. We want to find a Bipartisan Task to reopening the house of representatives. So we can solve problems for the American People. [applause] and with our friends like israel and ukraine and throughout the free world. But the House Republican civil war continues to rage on. My ring the congress in chaos, dysfunction, and extremism. House republicans have chosen the triple down on the chaos, triple down on the dysfunction, and triple down on the extremism. House republicans have selected as their nominee to be the speaker of the peoples house the chairman of the chaos caucus, a defender and dangers in a dangerous way dysfunction and extremist extraordinaire. Host we are taking your thoughts on this as well. Lets hear from tommy in waterbury, connecticut on the democrats line. Caller good morning. Let me say i like the new set. It looks very good. I think you are on a higher floor right now and im waiting for that little spider to show up on the back window. Anyways, i called about the i have been listening all week and watching the protests for israel and against israel but most was centered around the protests against israel. And the threat of violence on the calls that come in. Im a liberal and i dont like any of that stuff, whether it goes for one side or the other. I fought for the last number of years thought from the last number of years that it was the whites of premisess that hated the jews or the jewish regional jewish religion. Now i see colleges and liberals in liberal towns are writing and the hatred you see in their faces and words im sure you are going to get this after i hang up as well but is it maybe they have something in common or does the whole world hate the jews. What is it . I hear on this program and all my other stations i watch, the White Supremacists hate the jews and they are out for them but im questioning it now. I see these colleges so you have a nice day. Host jonathan in brooklyn, new york, also on the democratic line. Jonathan . Go ahead. Looks like we lost jonathan. Lets hear from yesterday in tel aviv actually, never mind, lets go to some tweets here back on the topic of the house dysfunction. We have congressman micah zell who responded with the ongoing war in israel and the chaos on our southern border, America Needs leadership, saying that we should not be leaving washington until we have an elected speaker and we get back to work for the American People. Then we have representative jamie raskin, when i came in this is related to the fact that some membersf e Republican Partye saying that they were hesitant for Steve Scalise due to his canr diagnosis. Jamie raskin says when i came down with cancer, mcaass colleagues rallied around to support m as a ranking democrat on oversight, i am dumbfounded that gop members and trump used ste scalise his cancer to abandon him cancer is a reason to abandon him on abandon him after electing over the cause. Caller we got into the israeli, Palestinian Conflict. All my life i heard the United States has been a supporter of israel. We give them the best weapons, they have the advantage in the middle east over every other army, then a group of prisoners is able to overrun their army. I dont understand that. And we have to give them more help . How is it that they can with the resources they have with an ordinary prison group . Secondarily, regarding this idea that people from gaza have to move from one place to the next. If you have a whole group of people, one point something Million People from one part of a country into another part, it is such a small area and you say after we have gone that far because were looking for hamas and hamas moves in, what are you going to say . You have to move them back into the south or the borders of the society . Second and thirdly, Israeli Military is nothing more than [indiscernible] you have over hundred something thousand in gaza, you have hostages, and just because somebody in gaza has a rifle, they have to stay up in the air and upon the people . That is ridiculous. We can have them go in and rescue the hostages. Lets say you have 10,00030,000, half a million israeli troops and going underground right now . Host lets go to jack in mississippi, also on the democratic line area did caller i believe in that line. Caller i believe in the constitution and democratic and republican representatives should be working for the good of the government, not of their political powers, of concerning the war in israel, israel is a country. Hamas is a religion. This is basically a religious war against israel. We have the same condition in the United States only by individuals considering what attacking hamas or attacking any other religious group. The third subject im interested in is the war in ukraine done by putin. Putin is worse than hitlers. Host thank you, jack. Roy in at worth, georgia the republican line. Caller listening to the democrats the other day on israel. This has kind of come together. Israel has a rich history and we should realize that history and israel had several conflicts, but the thing that happened is that when israel relied on a third country to support them, oftentimes they displeased god. My thing is this, democrats call themselves christians are believers and we know republicans say they are so this is the time the democrats and republicans need to get together and pray for the country of israel that they will turn and trust that their god will deliver them out of this and not just trust on the United States because we are flawed and we know we are flawed. Israel, i hope and pray, their return back to their source, that the country will play not pray not that the United States will deliver them but their god will deliver them and if we can do that and if we as a country, the United States, who has those christian values would also pray because we have a history and we know how god works. He showed us how he works in his bible. For those that know how god works, they need to also pray. Host thank you. Donetta on the democratic line. Caller yes. These are all abrahams kids. But still abrahams kids. The thing i really dont want to see is jim jordan as speaker of the house. Host ok. We have tweets here we can look at from a represtave austin scott who said i highly respect jim jordan. He is an asset toheepublican party and nominee for speaker. Our conference has spoken and now we must unite behind jordan so we can get congress back to work. One of many of the responses from membe othe house in response to what has been happening this week. One more time with the numbers, you canall 202 7488001 for republicans, democrats at the me number, 202 7488000. Independents 202 7488002. Lets hear from our next caller on the independent line. Caller good morning. Im a little overwhelmed but by the diversity of opinion but i wanted to mention a few things. When we had a war against isis in the middle east, we had russians, we had syrians, we had americans, we had hezbollah technically on the same side as the United States against the group called commonly isis. Hamas is not associated with iran. Hezbollah is. Hezbollah is working with the russians and hamas is basically like a pirate group like isis is , and i dont know what anyone thinks in the United States because i get really messed up here hearing the diversity of opinions but if this happened in the United States, i swear there would be some crazy people wanting to go around and doing the same thing here to the other side. I do not approve of what hamas did at all. I think in military since they violated every rule of engagement. The only reason i can figure out why they did it was because israel was going to sign an agreement with saudi arabia from what i understand and they wanted to throw a Monkey Wrench into it. So unless the American People wise up and get beyond this political nonsense and get more of an International Perspective of it, where they had a great diversity against isis, i dont think this is going to be the last of it because they did this intentionally to throw a Peace Agreement off track. Host we have a headline from the times of israel today where netanyahu is saying we have hit a mosque hamas hard but it is only the beginning. Lets go to howard in texas on the republican line. Caller good morning. How are you doing . Its a great day. Host good morning. Caller Hakeem Jeffries, why is he being so divisive and namecalling . What is the deal with that . I wonder why these neighboring countries in the middle east did not help out with what hamas letting these people out and stuff. Why art the neighboring countries helping solve what is happening over there to there . And i cant believe Hakeem Jeffries is so divisive and namecalling. Host our next colors on the democratic line. Caller caller on the democratic line. Caller yes, if we sent a unit from the u. N. Into host sorry there, henry, can you turned on your tv, please . Caller yes. Host need you to turn down the volume on your tv and would love to hear what you have to say. Caller ok. Now if we sent a unit into the west bank and unit from the u. N. , let them assess whats going on between the two and bring the leaders to the table from both countries, sit down with the u. N. Element and let the u. N. Make a decision as to what needs to be done and that is to draw a borderline, even build a wall, between the two and promise the east side if they come over the wall for any reason without permission, they will be shot. Host lets go to mark in franklin, pennsylvania on the independent line. Caller yes, thank you for taking my call. I would like, if i may, to quote here just three sentences from George Washingtons farewell address when he left the presidency. I am connecting this here with u. S. Involvement in the israel palestine conflict. He said a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists and infusing into one the enmities of the other. I will leave it to your listeners to make their own connections there. Enke. Host pew research has some numbers and data about how the United States and americans view israel. In 2022 survey, more than half americans had a favorable view of israel while 41 had an unfavorable view, varying in age, partisanship, and religious affiliation. Older people in the United States tend to have a more favorable opinion of israel compared to just 49 of those aged 30 to 49 and 41 of those under 40 republicans more likely than democrats to have a positive view of israel at 71 versus 44 . Conservative republicans who are especially likely to express favor at 75 . Lets hear from sandy in columbus, ohio on the democratic line. Caller good morning. I am calling to say first of all that i am so upset jim jordan might be the speaker of the house. He should be in prison here in ohio for the wrestlers and he is also he did not submit to the subpoena from the jan six committee. He is not capable of doing the job. He is a hateful man, so as far as the war goes on, when somebody like what we have hamas and we have cells in the United States, hanging people, killing them, whether a large group or a small group, we cant have that in a socalled Christian Society or normal society. So now, the Palestinian People, they are captive. The israel people have been attacked and babies killed. I do not understand why people dont see that you cant be on an island by yourself. Youve got to have other people and a coalition. Now people want to say well dont get involved. As far as the borders, i heard a woman say last week but they could be over here and week we should secure our borders. Lowes those people came in by air, they glided into israel. They did not cross the border so yes we need security, we need to phase out people here that havey hate other people, bombing churches, killing people, because this hate. Come on. Lets get it together and get people in there and dont put people in there that cause this type of situation. Host next caller in anaheim, california on the republican line. Go ahead, kurt. Caller hi. Host youre on, go ahead. Caller thank you very much. First of all, i want to say thank you for cspan for being online and allowing people to speak their truth or lease their opinion. And im comfortable with jim jordan being House Speaker. I think he is an honest person and speaks his mind and i look forward to the opportunity of donald trump in your next president again. He did a good job, he ran the company like a business. He is not perfect nor is anybody ever seen in office. I just hope that we can all come together and forgive each other and get along and work things out. Work is not as hard as some people think it is dealing with other people and you need to put yourself in other peoples positions and their shoes and not be so judge mental. Just forgive others and have peace. Thank you. Host tyrone in new york is on the democratic line. Caller [indiscernible] host are you there . Looks like we may have lost tyrone. Lets go to neyo in scranton, pennsylvania also on the democratic line. Caller good morning. Regarding the chaos in the house of representatives, that is because you people out there voting, jim jordan, Kevin Mccarthy, Marjorie Taylor greene, vote these people out. What is wrong with you . You see the chaos, they are not going to govern. They have zero what it takes to be in office. Vote them off. Vote these people out to get our Government Back running normal. These people are just they dont know how to govern and dont want to govern. They are just trump stirs. Thats another thing, you guys calling to say you want trump to be president again . Are you kidding me . Just vote these people out. Host we have a comment on x from someone with a handle august mom three. Jim jordan does not believe in democracy. He decided subpoena, he is an election denier, he will be trumps public puppet, he is a disruptor and not a leader, has no desire to govern so that is their man. A tear from mary in kandake in illinois on the democratic line. I dont i say the name of your town . Caller kankakee. Host kankakee, thank you. Caller im calling because im a democrat, i do not want jim jordan to be speaker. He is responsible for that riot january 6, he is Donald Trumps puppet, we dont need this. We need america back together again. Everyone. We need to join as a country, not as a terrorist or someone acting against us. We had four years of donald trump. We dont need that anymore. We need something thats going to stick with us and be by our side for everyone. And that is what i wanted to say. Thanks. Host looks like liz cheney has similar th. A former member of the house on x saying jim jordan was involved in tms conspiracy to steal the election and seize power. He urged pceefused to count lawful electoralot. If republicans nominate jordan to be the speaker, they will be abandoning the constitution and will lose the House Majority and they will deserve to. Lets hear from james in newark new jersey on the independent line. Caller hi. There are two sides of me and that is why im independent. I have been saying since 2009 build a wall on the west tip of california and [indiscernible]. Now, about israel, ive been saying since 2003 youre not can i have no peace. [indiscernible] thank you. Host ok. Frank in pennsylvania on the republican line. Caller i just think this is a whole coincidence of getting rid of the speaker and now they cannot make any decisions and now all of a sudden this war breaks out. Everything just seems suspicious how it works together and how come they have way more dented democratic calls on this channel then republican. Host we take the calls in the order that we get them. Caller ok. Just dont seem fair. Host we are happy to hear from everyone. Those lines are up for anyone who wants to weigh in. Lets go to karo in brooklyn, new york on the democratic line. Caller hello. 1948, england and america create host can you please turned on your television, carl . Caller i said 1948, england and america create israel. [indiscernible] when the israelis say they dont want to go, they want to go where they changed to palestine. When they went in here, people had the money to buy the people stuff and they changed. They are fighting for the land. The whole problem started. No. Did biden ever say anything about israelites . Israelite is a sham. [indiscernible] so it is not their own. The palestinian is a part of arabia, the israeli is a part of europe so it is a racial war. But a lot of people just use the bible and because it is a white world, whatever the whites will do is write. Host lets move on to linda in florida on the independent line. Caller yes, i was just wondering, all the people from pakistan here in america or over the world, they dont seem like they get it to why israel is retaliating because hamas is the ones that had started this conflict. I dont understand why the palestinians dont recognize that, that hamas is the one that started this conflict and i feel like the middle east people, they are very judge mental on to where except everybody for who they are. And i just am praying every day tower god, our jesus, to stop this and to have people accept who they are and the Palestinian People have to understand hamas had started this, not israel. Israel was giving them peace. I just wanted to say that and i thank you very much. Host we have a comment from just Jeff Williams on facebook who says if your moral compass is attuned to the suffering of only one side, your compass is broken and so is your humanity. Lets go to al honey see petersburg, florida on the republican line. Caller yeah, as far as israel and hamas atrocities over there, i really dont have an opinion. On the house, the problem in the house, with all of your democratic callers, with their hair on fire speaking that they dont one jim jordan in there a matter what, that just tells me yes we need to get him in there. We need somebody to slap back at these democrats once and for all. Kevin mccarthy said the reason he made a deal with biden and wanted to keep a deal going to avert the Government Shutdown but he was afraid that the democrats would blame republicans for the shutdown. I have been through a few shutdowns. They dont affect me at all, maybe they affect other people, thats great. But no matter what happens, they would blame the republicans anyway, so what is the deal . No big deal to me if the government shuts down, fine. All they do all thatll end up doing is harm people anyway. Thats all i have to say, thank you. Host jane in dayton, ohio calling on the democratic line. Go ahead. Caller i would like to say what a disgrace jim jordan has been for the state of ohio. He has never passed any bills to help any of the americans, he is there for the show and to help trump. It is just a shame because we have a beautiful state here and he has been in the scandal of ohio state and with all of this and helping with the insurrection, it is a sad situation all through the United States when people go before work for our government and dont abide by the constitution. Thank you. Host on the independent line, will in tulsa, oklahoma. Caller hello. Thank you for taking my call. I am going to echo a few comments i heard from some of the republican callers. How come all of the democrats call in . Maybe democrats are little more concerned and involved than some of the people he knows. Maybe we are i vote democrat on some issues and vote republican on others. I vote for the person, not for the party. I think that is what americas problem is, all along party lines. We get entrenched and defend even though some actions are indefensible on both sides. Jim jordan and the late of lady from ohio, i echo her sentiments. He is a puppet for trump, a trumper, and that is fine. You want to vote for trump, that is fine but dont vote for the people in the state of ohio. Jim jordan cannot say biden was legitimately elected. He says the election of 2020 is scandalous, is not accurate. And who created this entire doubt, nationwide out on our election system . Trump. If he wins in 2016 against hillary, it is a great day. Elections went smoothly. If he loses in 2020 against biden, it is a scam and leads down to the government. The gubernatorial races in arizona, all the election is flawed. It is a sickness. It is a malignancy and it is trump that i believe trump is the source of all of this doubt in the election denial is a. Jim jordan to this day has not admitted defeat to joe biden and neither has scullys. Both of them are in the firm belief election was stolen. Host lets go ahead move to paul in fort lauderdale, florida on the republican line. Caller hi. Just a quick answer to the last call about donald trump and election fraud. There were 1400 affidavits submitted by Election Officials saying there were discrepancies in the last election. The Supreme Court of wisconsin and pennsylvania have said the elections were basically a fraud because the signature requirements were changed without passage by the legislature of those things. So i would not be speaking so loudly about donald trump and election fraud. Has far as the Israeli Palestinian conflict, it has opened my eyes. I was a crusader for equal rights for black people. But i have kind of come to the conclusion that black people hate white people. Host ok, paul. Lets stop that there and moved to john in chantilly, virginia on the democratic line. Caller thanks for taking my call. I want to call that call despicable out. A must and israel, this is not something new. The problem is American People dont know even what because it is let alone what is going on and i understand that but the problem is 19 years old, who lives in gaza, he survived a bomb and is 19 years old and is be getting bombed that area. I am not condemning any violence but the reality is theres no broken deal that both sides will say. The previous leaders try to bring israel and palestine together and every time they get close, somebody broke that deal but they dont want peace. This is what they want. The reason i also call is i am sick of it, people who are calling themselves republican. How long have you been a republican . Was the Republican Party born yesterday or four years ago it donald trump . Lets be clear here, people, i am an immigrant who came here and this is for me, you learn the reality when you vote and when you lose you leave the office but the caller like before us who thinks that if donald trump doesnt get what he wants there will be no america is a despicable and people need to understand jim jordan doesnt deserve to be in congress. That is all i have to say. Host michael in connecticut on the independent line. Caller good morning. Good morning. Yes, jim jordan. Before that, mccarthy. That did not last too long. Before that, nancy pelosi, she ran with an iron fist. Little 80yearold woman, tiny little woman, she had control Congress Like nobody. Steve scalise is out because he did not want to go through the ridiculousness that mccarthy had to go through and now youve got jim jordan. This guy is a bomb thrower. He says trump on the election. There was fraud in the election, how to trunk it one more vote than he did the first election . Who got on the bandwagon . Who voted for trump that didnt vote for him the first time . That is where the fraud was. Trump said they were putting all of these votes through the machine over and over again, they were doing it for him but they just did not do it enough. Over in israel, with netanyahu, how many indictments is he going through . He is indicted on how many i dont know how many different charges. Sounds just like trump. Hes got 91 different charges against him and then yahoo . I think hamas people have had enough and they cannot take it anymore, getting attacked all the time, having everything cut off from them. It is a horrible situation but i dont know whats going to happen there. It would jim jordan will still never be and republicans elect a democrat for speaker of the house because there is nobody there i will want the job that will be capable of doing it for you and it will be a mass until whenever. You guys are not going to get a speaker. It is not going to happen. Host i think we got your point there, michael p lets move to the republican line with norma in new mexico. Caller hello. My name is norma. Hello. My name is norma. I am calling from new mexico. I do not support jim jordan. I do not support Steve Scalise. I think the Republican Party is in disarray. However, as far as the democrats are concerned and to the lady that called and said we are in disarray, we should elect a democrat as speaker of the house, get your own side of the house in order. If jim jordan does not belong there, get Rashida Tlaib, get the rest of the squad out of the picture. You guys allow that kind of stuff go on, you are so quick to criticize the republicans. I dont think the Republican Party is giving itself a good look right now. I think it is in disarray. A lot of it has to do with trump. However, with Hakeem Jeffries leading the charge on the democrat side, allowing Rashida Tlaib to fly the palestinian flag outside of her office, i dont think that is a good look for you guys either. Lets get everybody together on the same page and stick up for what is right. America, the u. S. Of a. Host there have been some democratic reaction to the ongoing speaker fight. Steve cohen, a democrat representing the ninth districts in tennessee said on x another watching paint dry day, referring to yesterday, as republicanha not found their speaker candidate. Hopellthey will coalesce aroundomne and not engage in efforts overthrow an election, someone who will not honorheir oath and work to keep government open. You know all americans values. Lets move to the democratic line with john in sacramento, california. Caller good morning my hebrew, israelite, sister. I have a lot of stuff to sail the be about all these people calling in talking about israel. None of them know nothing about the bible because the bible is a closed book to anybody who is not an israelite. If youre not an israelite, i wish there was some israelites out there that woke up this early in the morning though call in and tell these people what is going on. Theres a veil over these white peoples eyes that has been lifted and they are seeing that they do not have any care over anything that they want to have to do with these black folks anymore because they have given all they can give and they do not want to give anymore. And the reason why they are mad because these black folks cant even come together and get their own stuff. Why cant we all come together and get our own thing . Because the only way we are going to come together is we have our own nation. Just like in the bible. We had our own nation read we were not dealing with no wife folks in the bible. Host thank you for your comments. Lets go to david in charlotte, North Carolina on the independent line. Caller good morning, everyone. Pat buchanan, many years ago, said u. S. Capitol hill is an occupied territory. Everyone knows both parties have been bought and paid for by special interests. They will do anything to support israel. Same for u. S. Media. And where does it in the u. S. Constitution . It says we need to have blind support for israel . Can we can anyone tell me three things that israel has done for the u. S. Ever . The war is between two armies and not one army with all kinds of weapons and the other is ragtag people. Israel deaf desperately want the u. S. To be involved with iran and also another thing, but back ramaswamy and nikki haley are such supporters of israel, why dont they go to israel and fight for them . You guys have a good day. Thank you. Host francis in new jersey on the republican line. Go ahead. Caller good morning. It is hard to keep up with everybody the way they move around but somebody brought up a thing about liz cheney and brought me back to [indiscernible] she has no idea what a clavicle a clavicle is you grab the back, not the throat. Her testimony was and if she ever gets on the stand she commits perjury. As far as a moscows, when hamas took over, they dug up all the borderlines water lines and cut the pipes and made their own rockets. So they are not helping their people. They are not helping them at all. From 1973, i used to work at the u. N. And i came out as a worker and they had the same bullcrap with the palestinians. They dont want anything. If you read the signs they have, they want to deceive. They dont want israel, they want to kill everybody. This is never going to work. Host john in virginia on the independent line. Go ahead. John . Are you here . Caller john from hampton, virginia . Host yes, go ahead, john. Caller good morning. I want to give kudos to the gentleman from oklahoma, the independent. He said the most refreshing thing ive heard in a long time a caller set on the station, he said he would vote for the person, the person that would represent what he is looking for he would vote for them regardless of democrat and he called the trumpers out. To the guy in texas, mr. Jeffries calling people names. Can you remember back in 20152016 who is running for president . Standing on the stage, would you look at that face . Ok, so i will move on. To the people of israel and people of palestine, everybody in palestine is not a terrorist. There are a lot of people there that dont want hamas in their country or neighborhoods but they have no means of getting them out, they have no means of saying we dont want these guys because if they do they probably get killed. So americans, but some blame every person you see in palestine. The jim jordan, this is a man in the house would not come to the subpoena. They subpoenaed hillary clinton. He would not even go to the subpoena but whether it be mere you to get a summons to come to congress for a subpoena we dont show up, you know what would happen and they want to put him in charge of the house . These are republicans. Have a blessed day. Host that is all the time we have for calls for now. We have more coming up. Host we are joined by dina sadek, a mideast Research Fellow at the Atlantic CouncilsDigital Forensic research lab. Welcome. Can you tell us about what you do at the Digital Forensic research lab and what has been the focus of your Research Since the war between israel and hamas broke out. Guest it is on exposing content and incidences of misinformation and hate speech. We do this around the world. I focus on the middle Eastern Countries and this is on white attacks against Human Rights Centers on a wide attacks against Human Rights Centers. We have been monitoring content and statements online from and about the content from social media users and special sources. But also to understand and analyze the information landscape and narratives at this time. We have looked specifically into the spread of misinformation, disinformation, unverified, and rapid concept of social media platforms and have been looking into the fact of content moderation policies. Host people interested in your work can go to dfrlab. Org where some of your recent work is online now about disinformation, misinformation, and propaganda. What were some of the highlights . Guest there is an overwhelming amount of content, difficult to quantify, including on social media platforms. The main types of misinformation content include old footage from previous escalations. But also other footage from other conflicts like syria. There is a lot of graphic content which includes forms of extreme violence that media researchers and various education entities are still sifting through to determine the veracity of this content. We have seen footage taken from previous things to represent real events. We have also seen a number of old footage from paragliders from other events and old footage due to hamas using paragliders in this attack. Host i see this as one of the examples listed, using old videos. This one came from a training video that was egyptian and french earlier this year and was depicted online now. It is just one of many examples. Ultimately, what is the danger of this information going unchecked online, especially given how bad the situation is already . Guest i appreciate this question. The real danger is that it can exasperate the situation further by leading to the rise of hate speech and causing further violence. In rushing to understand what happened, many have shared updated and recycled information. The same thing happened in 20 during the previous legislate in 2021 during the previous legislation. Research from other conflicts like myanmar and ethiopia and other escalations, and other iterations of this specific conflict, have shown that online conflict can exasperate conflict and trigger violence further. Everyone should share caution when participating in this information or sharing content. Host i do want to hear more from you later on tips to avoid misinformation. We would also like to hear from our audience. Republicans, 202 7488001. Independents, 202 7488002. Democrats on 202 7488000. Dina sadek, x, formerly known as twitter, has received a lot of criticism for misinformation on the platform. I wonder how their policies around content moderation, which have changed since the takeover of elon musk, have affected disinformation and misinformation on the site. Guest it has been, for a long time, a source of realtime updates and news for many users who rush to get updates. It is understandable that we are seeing a lot of content from there. But with some of the contributions made by social media users, it is misinformation and unverified information, and that chelation about what has taken place and what might happen and speculation about what has taken place and what might happen. In terms of what are the difficulties because of the specific changes and differences in content moderation seem to have a correlation to the information and disinformation on the platform. Host in a now deleted post, elon musk recommended two accounts that were known for spreading this information to his followers. Can you talk about elon musks individual role in this and what specific policy changes people are pushing for in regards to potentially making this not so bad on the platform . Guest in terms of the role, x is elon musks company. The changes are referred to earlier focused on content moderation and trust and safety were changed as a result of what happened after the change of ownership. The change in these things made it incredibly harder and more difficult to spot and take down this content or an account that may be spreading misinformation or disinformation. It is important to remember that moderation takes a life people and time, which is exactly why these teams are needed. Another factor to add to this is language plays a big role in content moderation. We need to have the rights, qualified people in place. Not just from a Technical Skills perspective but language skills. A lot of people are looking at content in english, but we are looking at content also in hebrew and arabic. Many other organizations are doing the same, so social media platforms need to have these types of expertise under teams as well to be able to look at this content and analyze it. Host lets hear from eight caller on the from a caller on the independent line. Owen from delaware. Caller i have a comment question about information. Not specifically disinformation. I find a lot of people have an opinion about this Hamas Conflict but do not understand the origins or genesis. I was trying to tell someone what it was really about and i used this analogy. Lets say you have a homeless person who has no money. I see them and feel for them and want them to do better, so i go rob a bank and take a bunch of money from the bank and give it to them. I say this is for you so you can get your life together and be more prosperous. Then the bank comes and says, i want my money back. They go to take the money from the homeless person. They did not go after me who took the money. Host do you have a question . Caller i think it is more that people need to understand how this happened, more than why it is happening. Because if they understand how it happened, they can really understand why it happened. So what can be done . Host why dont you talk to the point about people looking for information about the origin of this conflict. Guest that is a good question. In terms of the specific escalation, i think owen was right on the money. Or is a lot of information out there. That is caused by the confusion of how things happen. The nature of the hamas attack and the amount of confusion that was caused after, as everyone involved and not involved where trying to understand what happened, how it was planned, and what exactly because the attack because a law of speculation from average individuals on social media who have nothing to do with this. That is part of the danger of the spread of misinformation and disinformation. The beauty of the internet and social media is anyone can use it and participate in the conversation. At the same time, that becomes the danger. There is a lot of trusted sources of information to get information about the development. There are trusted you asked news outlets and verification working on providing that information there are trusted news outlets and verification working on providing this information. If you dont know where someone gets information, it is probably not the right source of information. Host bill from pennsylvania on the democratic line. Caller thank you for taking my call. All i have to say is with the propaganda of everyone saying there were decapitated babies, it is halloween and there is more gore on tv than there has ever been in any other. People can say, if it is a fact and they show it, then it is a fact. It cannot be propaganda. As everyone will say it happened and never show it, it cannot be propaganda. Host can you talk about these videos . Many are quite graphic circulating, especially around the topic of children. Guest there has been a number of footage showed extreme Violence Toward children and adults. This footage is gruesome to watch and for any Media Institution to present to this to their followers is the main of the cult he of verifying if this information is true, main difficulty of verifying is this information screw is because no one can tell what is actually happening on the ground. But given the misinformation, there has been a lot placed on insuring this content is factual, correct, authentic, and where it came from, and if it is from a prethis conflict and happens in the course of the past week, where events have continued to develop. A loss of these videos have been debunked to be from previous conflict iterations or a videogame or other completely unrelated events. Any media outlet broadcasting the footage you would want to check to come from a place, but also be careful to not show such gruesome footage. Host mimi from new york on the independent line. Caller good morning. I am a longtime listener here. I wonder if the guest can help us why it is that so many gazabased news organizations have been taken down by meta. Host first, is that true . Guest i would need to look more into the details. What we know right now is a social Media Companies have rushed to moderate the large amounts of contents on the platform. There are palestinian groups that have been taken down since this happened. I think that is partially because of the confusion of people trying to decipher which content is hamas propaganda and which content is just coming from palestinians talking about the situation. Some of the content ends up getting taken down by social media platforms. Host how do the social media platforms thread the needle or walk the line of trying to decide what is political speech by interested parties, versus what is dangerous propaganda or violent content . Guest very good question. I think we will all be about to witness that. There are parts of the world that show is how social Media Companies should react to this type of thing, that there is a role moments of decisionmaking. Each single one of those platforms have policies in place. All of them with regards to what you think about any particular platform, there are some that do not allow distribution of violence and extreme content and do not want their platform is used for the spread of such content. In terms of how they would react, and what they will do about it, it remains to be in. But there are rules in place. Host i am just looking at some of metas policies that they posted on their website, saying that in the three days following october 7, with the conflict kicked off, they removed or marked as disturbing more than 795,000 pieces of constant for violating their policies in hebrew and arabic. It later says hamas is dictated by the u. S. Government as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and special Global Terrorism Organization and they are banned from their platform and they removed praise and substantive reports when they become aware of it, while continuing to allow social and political discourse. Lets get back to some callers with marvin from iowa on the democratic line. Caller good morning. I want to thank the young lady that is trying to explain what social media does and how this affects us. If we just look at it, it is a puzzle. The puzzle is that now everyone has cameras and a way to show footage to everyone across the world. Even if we take time to decide if it is bad or good, this is a very, very bad problem which has also escalated and fueled the hamasisrael situation. It is not war when you come in and kill babies and taken vantage of elderly. That is not war, that is not humane, that is not human. For that purpose alone, we look at this situation and say, maybe they can take time out to try to correct these mistakes and make them happen even less. We have been through this in my lifetime three times already. Of course, we understand the bible says we would not be here if jerusalem and the jews were not here. And i understand the palestinian situation. But listen, we have to find Common Ground here. If social media can help us get there, lets get there together. Host marvin makes an interesting point about social media having the potential to help people find Common Ground. But it seems that what we have seen thus far is the exact opposite. Guest thank you, marvin, for that. I appreciate it. Right now, social media has become a Public Square for people from all around the world. It is only understandable that people want to participate in these types of conversations online, whether you see online sometimes that conversations are happening or they are happening in your neighborhood and people participate really passionately. It is only understandable that people want to participate in the world. But it is a problem when people are not informed or must informed enough about the topic or not getting the right information. It is important. Another thing i have been saying a lot the past few days is in this particular conflict, it is very, very important to remember this has been long term. The escalations, of course, have their own nuances. And there is going to be further development that we are seeing happening. This has been a longterm conflict that has a lot of complexities. Before people participate in the conversation, it is helpful to be aware of all the nuance is. Host on the republican line. Caller good morning. Once this recent war just started, the news when it came on just felt so like the media it feels so consistent and homogeneous that war is terrible. Brown university did a cost of war study. They came up with 930,000 direct deaths from the u. S. s war on terror and like 4. 5 Million Deaths caused indirectly. It just feels so propagandish what we hear on the news. Have to wars have, what we have been told, turned out to not be true. I know the dead babies is another level of grossness, but i just feel so propagandized. Homogeneousness between news outlets that all support one slide one side. It is like one side and not the other. Like in ukraine, they are covering western ukraine, but nobody is covering eastern ukraine. When people post things on social media, a lot of times, they are being quieted or shadow banned. What do you think about trust in the media and social media . And also, have you ever heard of the smith act . Host lets allow dina sadek to mainly get to the social media trust question. Guest that is a good question in terms of trust in social media. I trust it just as much is each individual account because social media is all of us. Any of us could go post anything right now about an event. In terms of media, just like any average individual, i check whichever news Media Outlets that i find to be more trustworthy. I see if they have more robust Fact Checking verification numbers. I try to place my trust in those outlets and i go to the regularly. But, also, because of how polarized we have become in general toward media, i try to divert my sources of information and read other news outlets in order to see what is also out there, and not be only focused on a few selected Media Outlets. Social media, when you go to it, you have to look at accounts you trust similarly. If you are just going to accounts door neighbor may be very nice, but if they know nothing about the conflict and are posting about it, they remain opinions or things they may have found from unverified sources. Trust is specific to individual entities and not specific platforms. Host some of these examples are really shocking of the misinformation, including some on the platform x, where you have the verification batch. I am looking at one from an account with a verification ba dge but it is what of the examples you cited in your report of a video that is not real and comes from a videogame. Now, you have context added by readers saying the footage is not real and is from a videogame. How can people sort of figure out what social media sources to trust when you have things like verification that can be very confusing . Guest sometimes you can tell right away when you are looking at first glance. You see something very horrific is happening and this fire is here and you have no reason to doubt this. And you want to trust the footage in front of you. But you do have to go to a specific account and see if the person has a track record of spreading misinformation and disinformation. The issue of verification of verified accounts is not unique to this particular topic we are talking about. In our lab, we tracked this type of thing across the world. We have found over and over networks that engage in a coordination online. Onx,s on x some spread online. And a lot, because they have verification, some people may trust them more. I know id do not. This has led to a few other things. One of the things we covered in our research and education landscape is how social media accounts take advantage of this by impersonating others. In the case of one individual who has impersonated a bbc journalist and gained a lot of followers while doing so. Now they are banned by meta. Another account posted a journalism post on x and were able to spread a lot of misinformation, including what they set about Prime Minister netanyahu being hospitalized. So there is stuff coming from unverified accounts or accounts impersonating other individuals or other entities which are also part of the problem. Host john in colorado on the independent line. Caller good morning. I want to offer my condolences to anyone who has lost people in this conflict. It is really horrible, brutal, and untenable. I want to say really quickly that, you want to believe what you want to believe. Find a trusted source. If they are gullible, they will end up drinking the koolaid with jim jones. This Palestinian Conflict with israel i just wanted to say they are not fitting in the positive help desk are not getting any real positive they are not getting any real positive help. They need to push hamas out. It is like an independent voter with a silent majority. We show up at polls. The palestinian population needs to do the same thing and push hamas out. If iran with this, if they will do anything positive to support them, they would be helping them and not hurting them by allowing this to happen. Host nixon in fort lauderdale, florida on the democratic line. Caller good morning, cspan. Most people get their news from social media because the regular news station they think are biased. If they see scenes if they see things on social media, nine times out of 10, they will believe it because that is where they get their news. In your research, when you come across a site that is, lets say from a palestinian place, that is not trustworthy, how do you go about verifying if the person is telling the truth or if they are doing propaganda . Guest thank you for that question. In terms of how we go about verifying accounts and independent information, we look at the behavior of the account and what other posts they have. We do try to verify who the person is and what are their credentials to be posting about that kind of thing. Whether it is someone on x or meta, the main thing that will make them seek information is their credentials and what they are known for. We try to understand who the person or entity is and where they are getting their information from. If there happens to be trends of sharing information that is unverified or that has been proven to be falls that remains in their accounts that seems to be a trusted social media account. We also see action we also try to see the interaction between them and other users or other social media accounts that they get research from or comments on. Sometimes that is how we end up exposing that. We see the interactions between each others posts. Most importantly, you have to think, where are they getting their information from because everyone is getting it from somewhere. If the person is getting the information from their role life, there will be more evidence throughout their account for their behavior. If they are just repeating their behavior, this will also be evidence. Host we have a question from robert dougl on x who asked, isnt information suppression another form of disinformation, or would that fall under the purview of misinformation. How much do we still not know about what goes on in conflicts such as the ukraine war and the israelhamas war. I am guessing they are talking about social Media Companies and what they will or will not allow. Guest that is an interesting question. Right now, it is still too early to study the patterns of content removal to speak to any manner. I will hold off on any comment of what is possible that might be happening. But they have to not allow the spread of certain narratives on the platform. It can lead to tipping the scale in some ways. But it is early to judge. Lets see what is being taken down. And we will be able to determine whether suppression is happening or not. Host this is an article from a year ago referencing one of the last wars in gaza. This is a story from the Washington Post where an outside audit said facebook restricted more palestinian posts during the gaza war then it did on the other side. At it was a commissioned audit during the twoweek war between israel and palestine. They were publishing arabic speaking users more heavily than hebrew speaking ones. This is from a year ago, not related to the current conflict. I wonder how information like this might factor into how much people are willing trust the platform now. Guest it factors in very heavily. This exact message is something i alluded to earlier. That it had happened before and is probably the reason why people are scared of what is the type of content moderation that might happen this time around. This factors into this the language part, heavily. Because arabic users definitely saw a lot more of the content taken down. This applies to websites saying about the content moderation teams. They need to have the right technical skill to take down content, but also, some need to have language skills, in order to filter content. I think this still has the potential of being of changing the conversation when you do not have all the perspective. It is understandable to remove all content that includes extreme and graphic violence. And content that is absolute terrorist organization propaganda. But removing content of people talking about the situation where they are at might be worse to be more suppression. Host chris on the republican line. Caller i am very impressed with the brain map i can draw based on the comments so far. My opinions i have are based on my Technical Skills in Management Information systems. My account is wsuchris on instagram and it was banned on instagram. My question is on the term mal information. Guest yes, misinformation, disinformation and mal information is all different. That is just information that is corrupt. I understand users worrying from it. To understand what is intentional as far as it confuses users because they dont know how to walk how to get through it. Host can you walk me through the differences of those terms . And what tips do you have for people to avoid it online . Guest this information is information that is untrue and is spread unintentionally. Think of it as playing a game of telephone. You are just passing on information and may have missed something or added something. Or maybe a video comes along that already has untrue information. It causes harm but is unintentional. This information is the opposite. Whether i know or do not know, i am just spreading content around that is false. It is false and i know it can cause harm. I know it is unverified but i am still distributing it around a matter what around no matter what. Mal information is what is incomplete or has been corrected. That is hard when you do not have the full picture of events. Your mind can run wild with all this different ideas of what might be the case. Or you start filling the gap with other things that might not be the reality. All these terms are very similar. It really depends on the audiences perception and what they decide to do with the information. Host diane in mansfield, ohio on the independent line. Caller good morning. I am jewish. I am from a very small town. I just wanted to speak to some things that people have been saying. One is the dangers of misinformation is that people start demonizing jewish people around the world. This leads to serious fear and violence within my community. We have armed guards around our temples and synagogues. I keep hearing the media is biased because it does not show two sides. There are not two sides. I dont care what the hamas thought. I did not care i do not care what adolf hitler thought. And i am wondering about why we have so many middle eastern experts. I wonder why they have not all been fixed right now since there are so many experts. I cannot imagine our country is jim jordan becomes speaker of the house. Host any response to any of these points . Guest as we mentioned, this information spread alongside posts containing violent rhetoric that is encouraging further bloodshed by hamas and colin for collective punishment against palestinians. War is never good. Conflict is never easy and straightforward, as a simple two sides. But what we are seeing in term of content is there is misinformation and disinformation from all parties at the moment. Host the last call is from sheila in massachusetts on the republican line. Caller thank you for taking my call. I am sorry you will not have too much time for this. But i would like to know, what and twins Artificial Intelligence has what influence Artificial Intelligence has on content removal . Host that is an really interesting point and i would like to know on generating misinformation and disinformation on its role in content moderation. Guest i do not have data on this and have not done research in this area on how ai is being used to fuel such content. But i will look into that and discuss with my calling with my colleagues. Host thank you. Dina sadek from the Atlantic CouncilsDigital Forensic research lab. Thank you very much. The House Speakership battle and the israelhamas more war. 202 7488001 for republicans. 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488002 for independents. Yesterday, while delivering remarks in philadelphia, President Biden spoke about the situation in israel. [video clip] the more we learn about the attack, the more horrifying it becomes. More than 1000 innocent lives lost, including at least 27 americans. These guys make al qaeda look sore. The are pure evil. The United States stands with israel. [applause] secretary of state Antony Blinken was in israel yesterday and secretary often is there today. We are making sure they have what they need to respond to these attacks. It is important for me to urgently address the communitarian crisis in gaza. We are working in the region, including communicating with the governments of israel, egypt, jordan and you and to serve support for the humanitarian consequences for hamas. We cannot lose sight of the fact that the overwhelming majority of palestinians ive nothing to do with hamas of palestinians had nothing to do with hamas and are suffering as well. This morning, i spoke with all the americanss families of those who are still unaccounted for. They are going through agony, not knowing what the status of their sons, husbands, or childrens lives are. We are doing Everything Possible to return every american to their families. We are working around the clock to secure them. Americans filled by hamas, with close partners and allies around the region. Host we are also following the latest in the House Speaker battle on capitol hill. Yesterday, tim burchett spoke to reporters right after a secret ballot vote. Here is this exchange. [video clip] now, there will be other republicans starting to hit the fork in the road. Do you know how far away jim jordan is . I do not. Do you think they will let this play out . I do. I think he is. I think when people get home, grassroots, they will realize there is no one stronger. Host tom in illinois on the republican line. Caller thank you for letting me give my opinion. My opinion a lot of times you have to look at the platform of the people you vote for and how you want your government to exist. The palestinians voted for hamas to run their government. Which was just like in our country, we voted the democrats in. There should be more penalties for lives. There is no penalties anymore for lying because lies persuade people to do things they should not do. Most of the people of the United States now are bought in votes. We get so much revenue from the government that when i go to vote for president this next time, i will probably get a 600 check in the mail. You have to look at what the hamas platform is because this is the same deal with the republican and democratic party. Have a platform and tell you what they will do. They told us for the last 20 years that they want to push israel into the sea. No amount of money that we pay them. We paid millions of dollars and the israeli people took all their people off the land of hase land of gaza where they have made it into a fruitful place. They got rid of their Prime Minister when they did that and voted him out, because the people were so angry that they lost all the stuff they put in there and put the palestinians in their. The israelis have bent over backwards to try to have peace with these people. They have not changed their platform. They want to push them into the sea. Host henry in desoto, texas on the democratic line. Caller on thursday, i happened to be watching washington journal and asked the question, who would you support as speaker . Jim jordan or Steve Scalise. There was an individual that called in and voiced support for jim jordan. They also made remarks concerning Steve Scalise and him wearing a mask. It is to my understanding that Steve Scalise has blood cancer. Two wear a mask, for him, he probably saw it as a way to keep himself from catching a cold or the flu. Maybe not necessarily covid. I got from that caller that he saw Steve Scalise wearing a mask as some type of thing he did not see necessary. I think this House Speaker race as an race adds an exclamation point on the fact leadership is out of hand. We need to get people into office that is more about helping folks than just trying to score political votes. Him wearing a mask is just simple to protect his health. It is just common sense. Host thank you, henry. Lets go to james in lancaster, texas on the independent line. Caller hello and thank you for taking my call. A quick, brief comment about the battle we are having in our country of america with the house and to what is going on in the middle east. What we are seeing, in my opinion, is the wrath of god being dealt on both nations with america, america has always done the same thing we are seeing done in israel, from the inception of america. We were seeing terrorist activity that was there when the europeans came to america. We have chaos in our government which filters out to the people that create the laws that regular citizens are supposed to abide by. We are seeing the same thing happening over and over in the middle where things are being felt over there. I think we need to get back to our understanding of who god is. But we have left god and be played by the same corruption americans have set up. People get promoted with the same corruption. This is what we are seeing in my opinion. These are lawmakers are supposed to be filling the American Government that are making up roles and laws. They are not going to do anything they do not benefit from. There should be things set in place where there are term limits on anyone in our government. Host david in texas on the republican line. Caller thank you. I would like to first characterize and say this is not my opinion and is not misinformation. All this hoohah over the 6 million and whether this has an effect over the Current Situation is small change. You have to look at the numbers. Host what 6 billion are you referencing . Caller the 6 billion that were in the process of being released to iran for the hostage deal from three or four weeks ago. Host go ahead. Caller that is a distraction. That is not the money funding this. It will help but it is not funding this. At the time joe biden came into office, donald trump have maximum pressure put on the iranian government through sanctions enforcement. Keeping iran out of the dollar system so they cannot sell their oil. Oil production has gone down from 5 Million Barrels a day to 400,000. Under joe biden, iran has gone up 50 . That is their overall economy. That is not even taking into account last year. Under joe biden, their oil exports are up to 3. 5 Million Barrels a day. That is where their money is coming from. Bidens administration the lacks enforcement. They have been trying to get iran back in the nuclear deal. This is a smokescreen to allow these things to happen. Well, we are trying to make iran think we will get it back and that is more important than the nuclear deal. Everyone knows the nuclear deal is dead. There is only one reason to allow iran to pump that much oil and make that much money. That is going to fund all these conflicts. Host to follow up on your point, there is a story in the New York Times that the u. S. And talk and qatar have agreed to deny iran access to the 6 billion from the prisoner swap deal because of what is going on right now. This comes after Harsh Criticism the Biden Administration gave iran that freed of other funds to provide support to hamas. Caller you cut me off i said that does not matter. Host go ahead. I was just following up to give additional context. Caller i heard that and understand that. The Biden Administration had to be embarrassed to do that. They opted not just freeze it but give it to israel. That is not my point. My point is the 6 billion did not fund this. The tens and hundreds of billions of dollars that the Biden Administration did while allowing iran to pump ill two pump oil. They still allow iran to pump oil because that is the only way they have to help keep the oil prices below 100 per barrel and keep the price per gallon low, like they did during the 2022 election their policy concerning fossil fuel, where they made america dependent not independent anymore. Trump could do anything in the middle east he wanted to do. Move the embassy, go into iraq, iran, and the price of oil never went up. We control the world oil price. Our companies can produce more, the price will come down. We were the swing guys in the world global price of oil. We are not that country anymore. Host ok, thank you, david. Our next caller from new jersey, democrat line. Caller good morning. I want to keep my comments narrow, about the israeliHamas Conflict. First of all, it is an objective fact that israel was attacked by a brutal terrorist group, hamas. That is not arguable. It is also objective fact that many gazans, citizen gazans, are in harms way by the retaliatory movement of the israeli government, which seems to be justified in response to the attack, but it is not justified to kill innocent people, even though they are, even though hamas does embed themselves and create tremendous logistical problems, being able to respond what they are potentially doing is, to many, criminal. Host zach in baltimore, maryland, independent line. Caller hi, good morning. An earlier caller during the previous segment said something about there not being two sides to the conflict i agree with them. There are three. There is the right wing terror organization, hamas, the right wing apartheid state of israel, and the ordinary people stuck in the middle of those two, in gaza and israel, being brutalized by either side. Hamas committed a terrorist attack, it was very bad and they shouldnt have done that. A lot of people died and that was very sad. But he is weaponizing that to collectively punish the 2 Million People in gaza. Thats criminal, despicable, and really disheartening to see my Government Support it so wholeheartedly. I know they have recently come out and said, they should be a little more careful about not killing civilians, but collectively punishing them by turning off water, electricity, food that is one thing. Having them evacuate to the south of gaza, one Million People its really sickening to hear my Government Support what is happening there and the collective punishment of the gaza people. I dont know. I hope other people can see that as well. Host yes. There is the news, as michael was just referencing, israel ordered one million gazans to leave gaza. This move may prove calamitous, and that fuel, food and medicine in the territory are already running out as people try to evacuate from the northern to the southern part of gaza. Lets go to wayne in south lebanon, ohio on the republican line. Caller good morning. I got a little bit to say about this. Ive noticed that the republicans and democrats in this country is fighting each other, just like they didnt civil war times. Did in civil war times. They are fighting against themselves plus against each other. They are coming to a they are not coming to a decision, like men, the same thing they are doing in the United States. They are killing people by letting doctors act above the law and doing nothing about it. On top of that, not helping to the people themselves, help them straighten out. We ought to Start Talking to each other, then the country wouldnt be headed the way its going. Host dave in florida on the democratic line. Go ahead. Caller hi. I have to hand it to you for keeping a straight face when many rightwing crackpots call in, like the oil expert a few minutes ago. If you let people like him get in power, whats going to happen . We are going to invade china and iran . Before trump welch on welched on the iran nuclear deal, that mightve been possible, but they are getting close to a nuclear bomb, so all bets are off on that. Host we want to hear from everyone. Go ahead, though. Caller you stare into it the camera like the sphinx while they compare voting for democrats like voting for hamas you are just encouraging them. The gazans are trapped in the Worlds Largest concentration camp, which is what gaza is, for decades, and jews also lived there peacefully for thousands of years with christians and muslims until israel came along. It is populated by people from eastern europe, poland, russia, germany, people who came over from brooklyn. Have you ever wondered why the people who they interview in the idf sound like they are from new jersey . The socalled ethnic jewish state could not exist to ignore International Law for 56 years and continue the apartheid occupation of westbank and the blockade of gaza it looks like the only time a civilian death matters for a u. S. Politician or in the media is if it is in her if it is an israeli. The palestinian debts have been glossed over or outright ignored by u. S. Politicians. Nick make no mistake it is legal first civilian it is not legal to maintain a legal and military blockade, cut the electricity to the entire population, engage in collective punishments and conduct arbitrary airstrikes on the most densely populated center on earth. Host ok. Mark in grattan, massachusetts on the independent line. Caller well, good morning. I guess dave had something to say there. I just wanted to start off by welcoming you, kimberly. You are doing a fantastic job. Host thank you. Caller thank you for joining cspan. It is great to have you. The first reason i am calling was because of the unusual number of callers earlier today using openly racist words and themes, saying things like black people hate white people and stuff i just wanted to tell the staff there, its great we dont see the host pushing buttons and changing calls and stuff, that you guys are doing it another way, electronically. You are doing a great job there on cspan. The other reason i wanted to call in, as a bornagain christian, independent voter, living here in massachusetts, i want to tell my Christian Brothers and sisters that the Republican Party does not represent or hold to christian values. The bible tells us to welcome the foreigner in your land and in the old testament, the new testament, jesus said you gave me a cup of water when i was thirsty, you visited me in prison. The Central American refugees have been oppressed by the United States policy and probusiness intervention throughout the whole of the 20th century. Continuing now. So the undocumented immigrants at our borders, we christians should be welcoming, they are here to do jobs. Host i want to take it back to our topics today, on the israelhamas war and on the speaker issue. Do you think that is playing into the speaker issue . Caller i do think this racist attitude may be, may have been increased because of the israelihamas war and stuff. If you want my comment on that i fear jim jordan being elected to the House Speakership , because hes, you know, very, very divisive. I he cant really speak the truth, but that is true about all of our politicians. Host lets go to a piece of tape here. Republican president ial nikki candidate nikki haley was asked about this at an event in New Hampshire yesterday. Here is that exchange. [video clip] when you look at the chaos in congress right now, the inability to elect a speaker at a time of crisis, when urgent action from congress would be needed, how would you bring unity to the Republican Party from the oval office, and are you worried that this action from the gop might have consequences for republicans in 2024 . When i was in a when i was governor, and we had or a Republican Senate and house in the state, i would bring them in and they would but heads. What i will remind my fellow republicans is, you dont fix democrat chaos with republican chaos. Get it together. Get us a leader. If you look at what is happening in congress, they have one job, and that is to get us a budget. They have only given a budget on time four times in 43 years. We have not seen action from congress on the border, the budget, bringing down debt, trying to make sure we get legal immigration, or dealing with all these other issues. When america is distracted, the world is less safe. We are seeing that play out. Get it together. Its not about you, its about the American People, and the American People are done with this. They need to get in a room and not leave until they figure this host president ial candidate nikki haley in New Hampshire. That same eventwer candidates at hampshire, 20 24 republican president ial hopefuls mi pence and scott will speak at the national leadershi summit, held in new hampsh theerage will begin at 11 00 a. M. On cspan, span now, our free mobile video app and online at cspan. Org. Back to a couple more of your calls. Jerry in stuart draft, virginia, on the republican line. Caller hi, julie. Man. It will be hard, but i want to say, sorry for the attack on you for looking like a sphinx. I think the sphinx is beautiful. The war, what is going on over there, i think its because saudi arabia and israel were starting to become close and we couldnt have that. Well, this resident, or this administration couldnt have that. The last five days, there has been so much coverage about what is going on over there you dont hear nothing about ukraine, you dont hear nothing about the bidens scandals. You will hear nothing about Hunter Bidens laptop. As far as Steve Scalise i like steve scullys, i am a republican, but he messed up when he said our number one goal is to fund israel. You mean our country is in decline and your number one goal is to fund another country . Weve got to stop this. We got to fix our borders, fix our country i dont understand this. All this money goes to other countries when our country is in decline. Thats all i gotta say. Host mary in philadelphia, democratic line. Go ahead. Caller yes, good morning, cspan. You know, i am also concerned about we have been funding these countries for decades. Israel with hamas, ukraine you know, and we have been funding them with no oversight. Im looking at their prosecutors prosecuting netanyahu in israel for fraud. We have been funding ukraine, pachinko was listed on the Panama Papers for fraud. We are spending money after borrowing money to fund these conflicts in other countries, and we are looking at our country failing. And for us to continue to do this with no results, people are dying more in israel now and gaza, based on we are providing israel with the iron dome and continue to fund them for several decades. Yet they have to rebuild the iron dome. And we have to provide more ammunition and supplies to israel . So, you know, we have to start looking at, we are on basically where we are giving our taxpayer funding they dont a resolution, because you are looking at we will stop funding them if they resolve this situation. Thank you and have a good day. Host joseph in diamond bar, california, on the republican line. Go ahead. Caller oh, hi. Host can you turn down your tv, though . Caller oh, yes. Host go ahead. Caller yeah, on the israelicome off, israeliHamas Conflict, americans need to stand with israel because hamas is an evil terrorist group. Their only goal is to kill israelis, civilians and soldiers. Its not right. Especially, they started the conflicts last saturday and terrorized the southern border of israel. I feel that they need to be punished, and since i am a christian, i feel it is gods will that they will be punished, you know . Along with the nations, they will destroy and punish them. Host brenda in new jersey, independent line. Caller thank you for taking my call. I think the issues are also very important that our country is being faced with at this time. We are looking at supplying ukraine with funding for the war over there, then also with israel. What is going to happen to the United States when we are attacked . We have to be concerned about china and concerned about russia, and this needs to be on the number one agenda of the United States. They already hit us with 9 11, and we need to start paying attention to what is coming down the pipeline once again. We need to be concerned as far as our borders. You talk about over and the palestinians, where they cannot have the city citizens leave that area, gaza, egypt doesnt want them. They are protecting their borders. Why are we not protecting our borders . They are not even trying to get a speaker in the house. If we could take one part of the agenda and follow through and stop trying to solve all the worlds issues if we cant negotiate with the palestinians and israel and let them have a twotier system you cannot keep punishing the Palestinian People. They are not all terrorists. And how can you shut down water and electricity . I understand we are trying to get the hostages out of there, but what about the citizens that are over there that need attention . Everyone is paying attention to israel, but what about the people who are suffering from the palestinians . If we are christians in this country, we need to start looking at how there should be more peace going on in our world. I want to thank you so much for taking my call. You are doing a great job. Host thank you to brenda and everyone who has called in so far. From the Nations Capital to wherever you are, because the opinion that matters most is your own. This is what democracy looks like. Cspan, powered by cable. Washington journal continues. Host welcome back. We are joined now by Jennifer Briney, host of the congressional podcast congressional dish. , guest thank you for having me. Host who is your audience . Guest i started the podcast 11 years ago, because i am super cool and was reading the congressional records, and was looking at bills to see what was going into them, and there are things moving into law that we didnt know about. It was making me insane and so i started the podcast it was an outlet to tell anyone who might care, but 11 years later, the audience is really people who care about governing as opposed to politics. When you hear about congress, often its about the campaigns or the democrats versus republicans i dont care about any of that. I want to know where my tax money is going, what is being done in my name, what war are we fighting next serious things happen after the elections, so thats what i wanted to focus on. I learned so much from cspan3, where you guys play all the hearings. I have learned so much from experts who are testifying to congress about all kinds of issues. I wanted to highlight the things that were happening in the capital that were not about elections, but instead about host what makes your podcast different from the other political podcasts in terms of the angles you take, your financing, things like that . Guest i am a taxpayer with no loyalty to any ideology or party, i just want to know what is going on and Good Governance is important to me. One of the things that makes my podcast special, i do not accept any kind of advertising. That is not how i find the show. If you dont pick a side, its kind of hard to fund with advertising. Instead, i trust my audience. Because i want them to trust me. It is a listener supported podcast. We have a patreon where people can pay for episodes on a rotating basis, but i also see people will send checks, venmo, zelle, i have an Amazon Wish List and they will buy me things on the wishlist chipotle, everyone knows i love to pull a, but i would not take money from them. I want my audience to trust that when i tell them this happens in the world or the company or whatever, that i am telling you this because i believe it to be true and not because anyone is paying me to say anything. My audience is relatively small, but it is extremely devoted. I am so thankful for them and we have created a show that i think is i know everyone thinks that they are dedicated to the truth, but when it comes to politics, it is not easy to be someone who has not picked aside. To have the trust that we have built with each other and the support of my audience, it makes this podcast different from some of the others. Host with so much going on in congress and on capitol hill, how do you decide which topics to cover on the podcast . Guest i do my episodes on a two week cycle, so it has to be something that i am personally interested in. One of the things that i do every monday, i go into the congressional record and in the beginning of every days congressional record, there is something called the daily digest. I go through the daily digest and look at what bills are being worked on. My favorite part, i look at all of the hearings. As wonderful of a job cspan does, i know you have limited camera crews. There can be 20 hearings in a day. I like to see what hearings are going on and so many of them can catch our attention. I download a lot of hearings on my phone and as i am walking around, i am pretty much listening to hearings. One will catch my attention and then it is a rabbit hole, right . I will listen to one interesting hearing, then find out there were five other hearings going back five years about the same topic. Thats how the episodes begin, so a lot of times thats how its done. Then there are episodes like my most recent one, which is about the almost shut down, the continuing resolution that stopped the shutdown and the subsequent vacating of the speaker, and that was dictated by current events. It depends on what is going on in congress or what has piqued my interest. Host there is pulling from gallup showing that congressional job approval is down to 17 its generally pretty low, but this is low by normal congressional disapproval standards. Youve been doing congressional dish for over a decade. What is your reaction to what we have been seeing in congress, particularly over the last few years and how the American Public is responding to it . Guest i mean, i am surprised that the Approval Rating is that high, to be honest. Over the last decade, i have noticed things getting worse. When i started this, i was not prepared for the level of dysfunction. I was taught in high school that Congress Works a certain way, how a bill becomes a law, and then you see the actual Government Funding process, which is so often these giant omnibus bills that take bills that were supposed to have 12 separate funding bills, and instead we get leadership creating these giant bills passed five seconds before christmas, impossibly long to read it is shocking to see how bad the process was and to see the corporate capture of our congress, to see the type of stuff that is getting put into law, which is not at all benefiting the people but definitely benefiting favored industries that donate generously to both Political Parties. So i was shocked by it. In the last few weeks, we have hit a new low that i really didnt think was possible. I am hoping more people in this country are paying attention to congress. One of the reasons i have dedicated my career to this, there is a lot of focus on the presidency, but Congress Really is where our power is, where our money is allocated, and we are not paying attention to what is going on there. I keep waiting for it to get bad enough that we start to focus on congress and choose more carefully who we choose to represent us. Maybe this is the low, but i dont know. It seems to be getting worse and worse and more partisan while, as a normal taxpayer who travels and speaks to regular people in Grocery Stores and restaurants all the time, i dont think that we are that partisan. I dont think was happening in congress represents the rest of us. I am not surprised whole numbers are going down. I am just wondering, how low can we go before things get better . Host the big news in congress right now is the battle over the speakership. Yesterday, House Republicans nominated jim jordan, but he did not have enough votes to win the speakership out right. How important is the role of speaker and what does it mean for congress to have this opening for so long . Guest without having a speaker, the house is essentially shut down. That is when if the ironies of is one of the ironies of this. We barely averted a Government Shutdown, only to end up with a shut down because of the speaker. If we do not have a speaker, you cannot pass any bills, have a government deadline quickly approaching and cannot pass the budget bill. I dont know if we are on the brink of war but we are supposed to have congress in session to make decisions in the area of the area of war and peace. The speaker position is so critical, not only because we need one for the house to function, but even when there is a speaker, that is the person who decides what bills come up on the floor, with the scheduling will be. There is so much power in this position. To have it vacant is not good for this country. We need a house of representatives, and as long as we do not have a speaker, do not have a house of representatives. I wish both Political Parties would put what is good for the house over what is good for their party. This entire thing has some political calculation as become more important than governing, which is the entire theme of my entire podcasts existence. But i am concerned we are now going into the 12th day where the houses been shut down. It is dangerous, especially with what is going on with israel and palestine. We need a congress which is at minimum functioning. Host this also means aid to israel is not only on hold, but so is aid to ukraine. I wonder if you have seen any evidence there is a way around that. Guest they are trying to think of one. After 9 11, there were rules put in place saying the speaker pro tem, patrick mchenry, who essentially gaveled out the house and took away office from democrats we have a temporary speaker but this is unprecedented so we do not know what he is constitutionally allowed to do. In order to give that person power, i am sure you need to pass legislation which means you need a speaker to put the legislation on the floor. We need a speaker to deal with any of this. I forgot the rest of your question. Host that was the just. We want to hear questions from the audience. Full skin call in. Publications at 202 7488001. Democrats at 202 7488000. Independents at 202 7488002. Lets start with clyde on the independent line. Caller maybe they have a thinking problem because evidently, something is going on that maybe they cannot even handle. They are not thinking right, evidently. Maybe they need jesus christ to thin them out. I would think so. Because after 60 years of unchecked drugs in this country, navy they ought to get something done about it. Host what do you think is the origin of the dysfunction in the house . Guest i think partisanship has been rewarded on the campaign side of this. I think it has become acceptable, at least in d. C. , for Campaign Season to never end day. I dont see it that way. I see the campaigns as being a Job Interview and want to get the job, you should be loyal to the house of representatives. But we are seeing this party for instance, this entire speaker thing is being blames rightfully on the Republican Party. But the democrats voted in mass with matt gaetz and his gang of apes to vacate the speaker. There was no independent thought by a lot of people on the democratic side. You would think one of them would stand up and say maybe jim jordan is not better than Kevin Mccarthy, because at the very least, Kevin Mccarthy did not beat the debt ceiling or Government Shutdown, but they all voted in lockstep because their leader told them to. I feel like that loyalty to party we are seeing this at the heart of what is going on on the republican side because this aid is acting as if they are this eight is acting as if they are loyal. And Kevin Mccarthy is treated as disloyal. It is seen as a bad thing to work with the other party but once you are in the house of representatives, there is 400 35 people elected. It is not right that the house is functioning on only one party or another. Yes, somehow, something has gone on in d. C. D. C. Brain worms have told people it is natural to have party warfare. I can see this being the case when you are in an election. This should be put aside but is not put aside. Why they are doing this, i am not sure. It is not why think good statesmen would do. I would like people to think about the institution more often than i think they are doing. Host a republican from texas and the Foreign AffairsCommittee Chair spoke about the impact of not having a House Speaker here is his reason wants. [video clip] it is a dangerous game we are playing. It just proves to our adversaries that democracy does not work. Our adversaries are watching us and israel is watching. They need our help. My resolution of condemning hamas, we cannot even vote on that until we put a speaker in the chair. I will remind my colleagues about how dangerous this is. Israel will need an aid package. We are having discussions with the white house about that. If we do not have a speaker, he cannot assist israel. I think we are playing with fire. Need to stop playing games with politics. Host we are still here with Jennifer Briney with the congressional dish podcast. Sal in salem, massachusetts on the democratic line. Caller as far as i think, we can shut the government down. Because it is so dysfunctional. I have a tax situation which i cannot resolve. The irs send all that money and i cannot get through to them. It is exasperating. I dont think we will continue to exist much longer. Host your response . Guest i can understand being frustrated with certain government services. There are things to complain about for sure but shutting down the government is dangerous and not the answer. There are a lot of things the federal government does that would be life or death consequences if they did not do that. You need air Traffic Controllers rows planes would crash into each other. We need military bases because we need our country to be protected. At this moment, we have 750 military bases scattered all over the world. Those people cannot just not be paid. If you are out on a boat and get in trouble, if there is no government operating, then no coast guard comes to save you. There is a lot of things the government does that we seem to forget are important. While it may be frustrating to sit on the irs line, shutting down the government is never the answer. That is just dysfunction and is dangerous for the country. If you are angry about the funding, process, you should put your congress to fund the government better. If you are angry there is a lot of wait times for the irs, right and say give more money you write the congress and say give them more money. But shutting down the government is expensive and a bad idea. Host robber in california. Caller thank you for taking my call. We need to go back to what the original Founding Fathers designed. The house of representatives was never designed to be a lifetime calling. It was designed to have members come in and go out. I think we need term limits. With the senate, i think they need to go back to what the original Founding Fathers designed. They need to have the sitting governor appointed the two senators for each state. This would get rid of a lot of corruption. I would also like to hear your thoughts about having the Government Fund this everybodys campaign equally so you can get the big money out of this stuff. Host three points. Term limits, whether governors should two senators, and Public Financing of campaigns. Your thoughts . Guest i have always been kind of against term limits but i think i am starting to turn on that. With term limits, if you have someone serving you well, you should have the option to keep them. But there are people who have been in congress my entire life. I am almost in able to have children, i am so old. It is not cool to have people serving for that long. I am open to term limits as a solution. As for governors picking our senators, i am a californian and we kind of have had that situation. Governor newsom picked pad illa and has picked our new senator. I am not a fan of that. As voters, we do not have to vote for the same person over and over. We do not have to vote raised on name recognition. We do not have to vote democrat and republican. We focus so much on the presidency that we do not Pay Attention to congress that is on us. I dont think we have to change the system. We have to change our habits and take more responsibility. What was the third one . Host Public Financing on campaigns. Guest thats when i would love. I would love to make our elections much shorter. You get elected to two month terms if people seem to think they need to get into this right away. It would be cool to have it shorter. It should be a cant should be a contest of who manages their funds the best. As everyone got 5 million, they could decide if Television Ads are the best way to do it, sending out mailers, having a weekly meteor a pizza party. It would be interesting to see how people manage their volunteers and money. To see how they do this and have this be a part of the contest. Right now, if you are someone who has 1 million going against someone who has a quarter of a billion dollars, they can buy out all the attention and it is not a fair fight. I would like to see more of a competition that would show competence, as opposed to the ability to suck up to billionaires. Host joseph, maryland, independent line. Caller omg, i am lucky to speak to you and you too, the man on the radio. You are right on the money. You have described a lot of what is going on in the world. I have lived in d. C. My entire 54 years except for living in a couple states for a little time as an adult. We have to get the Citizens United thing to be overturned. I am so nervous. I will forget everything i wanted to say and ask you. Dont worry, you will be fine. Caller happy saturday. I lived in d. C. My entire life. We do not disagree with each other, to be honest. We do not trust each other nowadays because of what we are being programmed to think about really we have a lot in common than not. Mitch mcconnell, the other day ted cruz was saying on a show that Mitch Mcconnell raised 300 million to give out during the last election cycle. If i can say one more thing, my name is joe webb and im trying to do the same thing. I pray i get to. That Mitch Mcconnells fatherinlaws wife owns the Largest Shipping Company in the world in china. We dont know these things and that is why we do our work. Thank you. You inspired me to hurry up. I am taking too long to get myself out there. I am on the World Wide Web as joe webb. I am trying to do my thing for abc host do you want to respond to joseph . Guest thank you. I wish you luck in whatever your endeavor will be. I agree. I am a socalled digital nomad. I have been traveling fulltime for a years and i have spent time all over the country. The summer i was in south dakota, i am currently in oklahoma. I will be living in austin. Like i said, i am a californian. I have been in blue states and red states. We do great. I think most of us are just living our lives and can find Common Ground on a lot of things. I have proven that in the conversation i had typed in the world the conversations i have out in the world. I think the politicians are more polarized than the American People. Anytime i get depressed in my job, which is kind of a lot, i turned to having conversation with regular people and it makes the feel better because we are not as divided as we are told. Host isaiah in alabama, democrat line. Caller i have been a democrat all my life and i am so glad i am a democrat. One thing they do know is they have to run the country. We need some new laws. If a party cannot get us if you cannot elect a speaker in 10 days, the other party should automatically take over and run the government. It is crazy. It does not make sense. They are getting paid all this money to represent us and they are just fighting. Whoever party cannot whichever party cannot select a leader in 10 days, there should be a new rule that the other party should take over so we will never be without a leader. Host what do you think of that idea . Guest it is interesting you say thats, because i think you are verbalizing what might have been the play the democrats were going for in helping matt gaetz and the eight people vacate the speaker. I dont understand why the democrats are getting a pass in general for their vote. If they were actually on the sidelines of this and voted, instead of voting to fire Kevin Mccarthy after he worked with them to keep the government open if it had just been a vote of only republicans, it would be eight to 210. Kevin mccarthy would still be the speaker at the house would be open. The democrats chose, knowing there was no other speaker in the wings, to help the people who were bad at Kevin Mccarthy fire head. Now they are sitting back and saying this is just a republican thing, but they chose to participate, and they own this chaos. The idea that the republicans cannot govern, which is true, they cannot, but the idea that the republicans are the only responsible ones here, i do not buy at all. It would not have taken that Many Democrats to not vote. They could have just gone home or gone to again feinsteins funeral. We only needed about 10 of them to vote present and this would not have happened. I do think this was a play to possibly try and get Hakeem Jeffries to be the speaker. To say, look how bad the republicans are, let us have the power. I think it was a cynical power play. I am very angry about it. I think we have a big problem in that both parties are putting their parties above the institution of the house. Host dj in cleveland, ohio on the republican line. Caller i am a 93yearold man this month and i have lived to see a lot of things from the depression to the wars. And served in service myself. We need term limits. There should be no lifetime politicians in this office. And i would like to see more women involved in the political process. It is time for women to raise their voices and say, enough of these wars and conflict. We live on a beautiful planet and should be appreciative of the life we have. We are at war currently and we dont realize we are at war ourselves with the soul of humanity. We have to wake up and realize we have the gift of life and we should be grateful for that. Thank you for your time. There should be more women running the government. Thank you for listening. Host anything to add . Guest that was beautifully sad. Thank you for calling and happy birthday. Host ron in Northern Virginia on the independent line. Caller i would hope you will give me a minute or so to make a few points. I do not mean any harm by this. It seems you are a little poly. We are forgetting history. Power, money. You talked a few times that the democrats played. You dont know what their play is that Kevin Mccarthy was not some he is not trying to take care of america. We have two sides. Each member of congress is doing this. Is doing exactly what the voters in their districts put them in to do. They are fighting openly and telling everyone what they are going to do and getting voted in. The number of americans that those are insufficient. American people do not vote and do not Pay Attention. They are a direct. It is hard to say this about our own country but we are a direct and will not learn our are ignorant and will not learn our lesson. The media is pure propaganda. The corporations and institutions ignore people. We can try to call our Congress People and send our senators and our senators but they are ignoring us. If you do not have a billion dollars or are a billionaire, you cannot get your message out. The media is corrupt. Politicians are corrupt. Our system is broken. Host this gives jennifer a minute to respond to questions you raise, particularly on the ignorance might be reasons we are seeing some things on the hill. Guest i think he is right. That is a big problem. But that is why i do what i do. I understand why you would call me polyana. You are not the first. I dont think anything gets better by saying it is all corrupt. We have to do something. I am hoping by creating a podcast as someone speaking just as myself, a taxpayer, who is not a team player for either political party, i am hoping more and more people do this. I am not alone. We have christian. We have rihanna who has asked we have briana. We have a lot of people using platforms to so we can disagree without being disagreeable. We have policy solutions that we can agree on. The shows i just mentioned have people on technically different sides of issues. I am amazed at how often they can save, this makes sense to me, so lets go forward with that. I do have sense that the Younger Generations are not that polarized and im seeing things that give me hope. I am hoping more people will tune into these shows. I know the Younger Generation is not really watching cable news, so i think as the Younger Generations and internet aids take over, i hope he can elect to better people to our house internet age take over, i hope we can elect better people to our house and senate. Right now, with a congress that is much older than our general population, it will take time. I hope with a new generation, if we can just get some people who have been there my entire life to step aside or get voted out. Then i think things will get better. As soon as i do not believe that anymore, i will stop doing my show. Host marche in pennsylvania on the democrat line. Caller hello. The magic number is 217. I cannot come up in my mind with a publication that will garnish the 217 votes with a republican that will garnish the 217 votes. I dont understand why. They have not picked up the phone and talk to Hakeem Jeffries. I know they will not put him in charge of the house. But compromise would be the key. I dont understand how they can be in such a crisis and gavel themselves in and out. It must be nice to have a four Day Work Week with two hour lunches. They should be in a room and not moving until this is resolved. At least for the cameras, pulling 12 hour workdays. Do you not agree . Guest i agree. The fact they left and are not coming back until tuesday . Why are you taking monday off . I struggle to find an republican to find a republican that is currently in congress that might be able to work. The person in the house is not necessarily have to be a member of congress. It can be anyone. I know this is kind of crazy but there is one name that keeps running through my head as a republican that could get both sides of the aisle. It is the cover the governator, arnold schwarzenegger. I have no idea how this will play out. The fact this happened because there was a Government Funding bill created with democratic help and then they turned around and fired the speaker, i think there is a lot of bad blood. I know if i were a republican that i would not trust the democrats after this because they basically said, you compromise with us, so now we will kick you for it. I understand why this is not the solution but we will see a week from now as things get more dire in the republican congress. Us voters, if we think of some names, it is up to us. I think we should be throwing the mouse because it seems clear no one knows what to do which is a scary place to be in. Host that is where we will have to leave it. Jennifer briney is the host of the congressional dish podcast. Thank you for your time. That is where we will leave it for todays program.
