Fighting has begun in the middle east between israel and hamas and hundreds have been killed over the last two days. Lets take a look at an Associated Press story looking at what is going on in israel this morning. Israeli soldiers battle hamas fighters in the streets of downtown israel on sunday and lunch retaliation strikes that leveled buildings while in northern israel in exchange of strikes and fears raised of a broader conflict. There was still fighting underway 24 hours after an unprecedented surprise attack in which hamas militants backed by rockets broke through an israel barrier and ravaged through communities. They took captives that they will likely try to exchange. Hundreds have been killed on both sides. A slow response the onslaught pointed to a major intelligence failure. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country was at war and would exact from their enemies. Hamas leaders said they were prepared for further escalation. This comes from the Associated Press ended is what is going on right now in israel and gaza this morning. While President Biden came out yesterday at the white house and made statements condemning the attacks in israel, we will bring you what President Biden said. [video clip] pres. Biden in this moment of tragedy and want to say to them and the world and terrorists everywhere, the United States stands with israel. We will not ever fail to have their back. We will make sure to help the citizens in need so they can continue to defend themselves. The world has seen appalling images, thousands of rockets in the space of hours raining down on israeli cities. Hamas terrorists killed not only Israeli Soldiers but civilians in the streets, in their homes, innocent people murdered and wounded. Entire families taken hostage by hamas after days marked the holiest on the calendar. It is unconscionable. When i spoke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, i told him we stand with the people of israel. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people full stop. I support is rocksolid and unwavering. This is not a moment any Party Hospital to israel to support attacks to seek advantage. The world is watching. I have also been in contact with the king of jordan and spoke with members of congress and directed my National Security team to engage with their counterparts to make sure israel has what it needs. I have directed my team to remain in Constant Contact with officials in the region as well as the European Partners and the palestinian authority. It is a tragedy unhuman level. Innocent people and lives have been broken and families torn apart. It is heartbreaking. We are praying for those families impacted by the violence could we grieve with those who lost their loved ones and a piece of their soul. We hope for recovery for many of the wounded. We will remain in close contact with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Let there be no mistake, the United States stands the state of israel as we have from the moment the United States became the first nation to recognize israel after its founding 75 years ago. Host lets find out what is going on in the middle east between israel and hamas by talking to the world editor at axios who will join us and give us an update on what is going on. Good morning. Guest good morning. Host can you give us get us uptodate on what is happening between israel and hamas . Guest overnight local time israel and gaza, there were airstrikes in gaza and missiles fired late into the night. This morning, 24 hours after the attack began on israel, Israeli Military were still fighting fighters inside israel in several different locations, we saw hezbollah fire a rocket to lebanon. That seems to have been a very contained incident at the moment. Israel did respond, though it seems to be calm at the moment read now. We saw in egyptian shoot dead an israeli tourist in egypt. That does not indicate anything more will happen in egypt but it adds to the complexity of the situation. Host do we know anything about whether there have been any american deaths or deaths of anyone from the United States who is in that area . Guest as far as i know we do not have information at the moment. We should remember that there are a lot of dual israeli american citizens live in israel or have family in israel. I expect that as that goes on we will hear from u. S. Officials as to how this may have been impacting the americans. Host what do we expect to see the Israeli Government do in retaliation for these attacks . Guest we expect retaliatory strikes and gaza to really ramp up over the next few days. That is something we always tend to see when there been wars in gaza. We also know that there are several israeli troops heading to the south. The question is whether or not israel plans to launch a ground attack in gaza. That is one thing a lot of military analysts are keeping an eye on and also that would perhaps bring up more questions as to what israel wants to do. Ben young who said israel wants to make any places where hamas has infrastructure, tunnels, into rubble and that is a strong indication there will be lots of strikes but it is unclear whether or not israel wants to completely get rid of hamas in gaza and then it would likely be handed to the Palestinian Authoritys if we got that far. In the immediate future we should expect sadly more civilian casualties, perhaps even on both sides. Host you mentioned egypt and lebanon earlier and the fighting going on outside of gaza and israel. Guest president nine in his statement yesterday at highlighted what he interpreted as heightened concern in the u. S. And israel. President biden earlier in his statement was very clear that other adversaries of israel should not get involved in the conflict or war and as we know the Northern Command in israel was on high alert and weak saw them respond today to the hezbollah rockets. There are other wider concerns as to whether or not this could become a lot more regional. At this point we dont have full indication iran would jump into the war directly but it is something the Israeli Government and u. S. Government and western governments worldwide will assess as the situation progresses. Host can you explain to the audience who hamas is and what you think their goals were . Guest maas is the ruling party in gaza and have been in power for quite some time. They havent militant wings and often they are the ones leading or coordinating strikes into israel when we see flareups along that particular border. There are other militant groups as well who dont have the political stakeholder hamas has in gaza. In terms of goals, sitting back and looking at the big picture of things, hamas has stated clearly at them want to end the occupation but on the palestinian side, and uptick particularly in the west bank. Hundreds have been killed and more than 48 children. There has been an uptick in violence. A lot of people agree it stems to the fact that Benjamin Netanyahu has a very far right government in power. That includes a couple ministers and israel itself, Benjamin Netanyahu stopped in for months due to his overall plan that included protests by reservists who obvious this ended when the attack began they were very much threatening to not report for duty or certain duties. That weakened the Israeli Military at least from the public point of view. When people start to do postmortem of how this all laid out, that would be a big question mark on the political stability israel had on that. Host what will you be watching in the days coming up when it comes to the middle east. Guest in the immediate future we will be watching how things continue to play out in southern israel. There will be a point where hamas will be remaining insiders would be killed or captured. We are also keeping an eye on hostage situations in terms of hostageshat may be being held inside gaza by hamas and whether or not there is any goating power to get them free. That is unlikely at the moment because is built will very much respond with heavy bombardment is not a Ground Invasion in the next few days and weeks ahead. I dont think this will end the time soon and sadly that will mean many more civilian casualties. Host we would like to thank the axios reporter for coming on with us. Thank you for your time. Guest thank you. Host we want to know what you think about hamas lunching an attack on israel. Thats talk to will who is calling from baltimore, maryland on the democrat line. Caller the nation of israel as we know it today was established in 1948 after the zionist terrorists overran the Palestinian Government with bombings in 1946 at the King David Hotel and other terrorist operations overran the government. This was an injustice and shame on the world for aiding and abetting israel. That is the United States and the western nations allowing this to happen. Here we are today, the gaza strip is all that is left for the Palestinian People. The west bank and the illegal settlements each and every day, israel has one of the greatest intelligence agencies in the world and just like 911 was allowed to happen in america so we could have an excuse to go into iraq, i am pretty sure this was allowed to happen so that Benjamin Netanyahu and go into the gaza strip and commit genocide against what is left for the people of palestine. Host lets go to tom calling from canton, michigan on the independent line. Caller thank you for taking my call. President biden said all of the right things that we would back israel and my concern is he really doesnt have any credibility in the world, when you look at the southern border and the black lives matter protests. Dozens of people are killed every month in our cities. The lack of leadership he has shown in our country when he can look at the people and say the southern border is secure and people know it is not. I dont know a people in the intelligence agencies really believe him. When he speaks he is lying. I dont know about Conspiracy Theory is like the previous caller but it will be a drawnout things. In my view israel does have the right to clean house because you cant send hundreds of soldiers in your country and kill and kidnap people. Host lets go to michael kohn from ashburn, virginia on the republican line. Good morning. Caller the first caller said i am a republican in support israel but i also support the Palestinian People. Over the years they have been treated very unfairly. Just as the previous caller said were the first caller, just like we looked for a reason to go into iraq, i think netanyahu has been waiting and waiting to start his movement to expand israel and their go. I am surprised it actually took so long. I was wondering when it was going to happen. Or, they make a lot of money off of it including in this country and i think you will have more down the road. I feel for the Palestinian People on the other side too because the reporter from axios said 40 children have been killed in gaza and when you hear things like that, it is almost like they are being pushed into going into war. I think they had it coming and lets see what happens. Hopefully they can work it out peacefully. Host we are going to bring statements from israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu where he addresses the citizens of israel. I want to warn our viewers that this will be in hebrew and will have captions but we wanted to bring exactly what he said to the citizens of israel after the first attack. Here is israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. [video clip] [speaking in hebrew] host once again, that was is really Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying they consider themselves at work, calling on the citizens of israel to follow the directions of the Israeli Defense forces and once again promising and unprecedented response. We want to know what you think about hamas lunching a surprise attack on israel. What you to call in. You see the numbers on the screen. I want to read from political a little politico about what they are saying and what the lawmakers are talking about right now as the surprise attack happened in israel. This is from politico. With an hours of the stunning attack, u. S. Lawmakers were quick to promise more aid to americas closest ally in the middle east. Yet it comes at a time when deep political dysfunction in washington raising quick questions about how quickly the money can start flowing. Despite pronouncements of support on both sides of the aisle, there will likely be no fast or easy response until the cast surrounding these empty speeder ship is settled both candidates backing support for israel on saturday yet the house is several days away from electing a leader and the Lower Chamber remains far from unified on most issues. At the same time, Congress Also has to grapple with a looming Government Shutdown and the funding patch expires november 17. Quote there is nothing the house can do unless they elect a speaker and i dont know if that happens quickly, former speaker kevin carthy told fox news. Department Kevin Mccarthy told fox news. There are no immediate plans for military equipment at the situation is in its early stages. That comes from politico with lawmakers saying a want to help israel but political chaos in washington means it wont happen quickly. Go back to the phone lines. Lets start with connie calling from pennsylvania on the democratic line. Caller what i dont understand is that israel had become a nation and palestine is not a nation. And also there is no palestine. There are palestinians. The government of palestinians have seen that since there is no speaker we cant move or help. I do not believe netanyahu tried to make this happen period believe the palestinians made this happen by all of the killing they brought in israel and israel is just supposed to stand still. Israel has to fight back to be and stay a nation. That is what i believe. I leave biden is saying what he is i believe biden is saying what he is saying because he knows he is not going to get a lot of funding to help. And even though i might be democratic, i dont like what is happening here, though it has been happening year after year after year. I do believe in netanyahu and i dont believe the palestinians are really tried to save their own land. Host lets go to von calling from lawrenceburg, missouri on the independent line. Caller the lady just talked and my mind. Israel is one nation, one country. The palestinians are israelis. So i dont understand this attacking israel when gaza is part of israel. It is occupied by the Israeli Forces. But isnt this the civil war and white in the world are we getting involved siding with one side of the civil war and people here have been corralled up and treated like nothing. So lets get this straight, that theyd who just talked, the news lady, all credibility is gone. It is within the country of israel. Lets get it straight. That is number one. Host thats lets go to dennis on the republican line. Caller let me correct the last caller and what this is truly joe biden in Antony Blinkens fault. They just iran 6 billion and we know help us and hezbollah hamas and hezbollah are just proxies for iran. This is iran and joe bidens fault. Remember this when it is time to vote. Get this eddie it this idiot out of the white house. Host lets go to diane on the independent line. Caller god gave israel the land , it was called the promised land. When they got israel they were supposed to kill every palestinian because they did not worship god. They worship other gods. This is why the land was given to the israelis because the israelis believed in god and the palestinians didnt. When they entered jerusalem, they killed many palestinians but do not kill all of them because the palestinians deceived them and they did not know they were actually israels enemy. Therefore they multiply even until today. They have been fighting israel from the time israel was established and they have fight it ever since and that will never end until jesus comes back. Host lets go to randy convert millington, michigan on the democratic line. Caller i would like to start out by thanking you and all the other men and women it takes to bring us this great program. You are doing a Great Service for the nation. I hate to see anybody at war but now we have nations with overpowering military might who basically have been stepping on a bunch of people and imposing their will on them because they have the military might. You cant keep doing that forever. That dog is going to come back and bite you. Too bad it is going on over there. My thoughts and prayers go to both sides. But on this one, what do you do when you cant eat and your kids have been killed for the last year. Something was bound to happen. You cant keep beating that dog. We are seeing what airpower means to a fight and israel has the airpower. Host lets go to clifford calling from oceanside, california on the republican line. Caller i would like to go ahead and agree with the other republican on a couple minutes ago that it is joe biden and Antony Blinkens for along the 6 billion to go to iran. The democrats dont seem to understand the democratic collars that they are supporting hamas which is a terrorist organization. The Palestinian People are being used as a proxy. I dont know what is wrong with the democratic callers not understanding that. It is America First and not these terrorists. Please, these people that voted for joe biden, he has made what they said trump would do, the worst world possible. Host lets go to flushing, new york on the independent line. Caller i it wasnt born in this country. I wasnt born in this country. We need to find a solution. There are the palestinians and israelis fighting for land. Goes to all of the countries surrounding and they play a game. Through this crisis, all the bombing in new york and manhattan. All those people were supporting palestine. It is a crisis. It is not going to stop we have to choose that there are two estates, the palestinian has israelis. We need to trade land. We saw what happened yesterday. Host lets talk to susan calling from new york on the democratic line. Caller want to address first your first caller from maryland who does not know this history. Israel was created in 1948 as a result of the killing and massacre and holocaust of 6 million jews as a homeland for the jewish people. At the time the state of israel was created they put their hands out to the surrounding arab countries and wanted peace. But jordan, egypt and syria all attacked israel. So they had to defend themselves. About this situation, these are terrorists. They are hamas and not necessarily the Palestinian People themselves. Many people in israel, and you have seen the protests, they do not like what netanyahu stands for and do not like what he is doing. And i as a jewish democrat believe they need to resolve this and have a two state solution. I have believed it for many years as many israelis do. Do not get your history wrong. The state was created as a result of the holocaust during nazi germany. And we never will forget that as jews. Host lets go to pat con from chattanooga, tennessee on the republican line. Pat from chattanooga, tennessee on the republican line. Caller i believe in god and things are going to start happening here. But why did President Biden the sudden this week before this happened yesterday said he would build more of the wall after you he after he let in 6 million people. We dont know who they are, we didnt that them and they lied about everything we didnt vet them and they lied about everything i believe they stole the election. Host Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs committee, a portion where he responds to republicans who blame this attack on the vine administration attack on the Biden Administration. [video clip] there is no connection to that at all period espys my republican colleagues who bring that up at all. I despise my republican colleagues who bring that up. We should be working together in a bipartisan way on how to help israel defend itself. Not a single dime has been dispersed to anyone, not to iran or any humanitarian group. You know this kind of operation could not have been planned overnight. This is a plan that had to take place weeks or months ago, long before the deal. There is absolutely zero opportunities of this being utilized or anything. It has been sitting in the transfer and qatar as of now. Host lets see what followers on social media are saying about the hamas attack on israel and what other lawmakers are saying about what is going on in the middle east. Here is a post on next x from asa hutchinson. The tech is symbolic of the times we find ourselves in with weak leadership in the white house we will stand with israel and for freedom. Vicki alcott posts on facebook, we can all say it is joes fault billions to iran. Republican president ial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy says the Foreign Policy knew they were funding hamas and went with it anyway. Our president spent six only doused to iran. Taxpayer dollars are funding iran, hamas and hezbollah. This will end on day one of my administration. Chris christie says biden has invited this war against israel. We must do whatever it takes to support the state of israel in a time of great danger and we must and the scourge of iran backing terrorism. Desperation leads to action there they feel they have nothing to lose. This puts another arrow in netanyahus quiver as he works to gain control over the Israeli Government. We wonder if he turned a blind eye in the buildup. We want to know what you think about hamas launching a surprise attack on israel. Lets talk to norm in falls church, virginia on the independent line nora in falls church, virginia on the independent line. Caller i dont think there will ever be peace in palestine until the legitimate rights of the palestinians are addressed. I dont think the American Government is an honest broker in the socalled peace negotiations between the israelis and palestinians. And neither are the israelis. I guess you could say that palestine live is very difficult in a Palestinian Refugee camp. My husband is palestinian and i was in of a root, lebanon refugee camp. And it is very difficult in a Palestinian Refugee camp. I can tell you that for sure. Palestine was ethnically cleansed by the israeli zionists in 1948 and this has been an ongoing process for the past 75 years. Host lets talk to david calling from st. Paul, minnesota on the democratic line. Caller i was just calling to say that israel is a terrorist state and regularly will kill palestinian journalists. Israel bombs palestine with military equipment given to them by us and use it to kill civilians in israel. I think hunter biden just left it on the table. Host lets go to Catherine Cohen from florida on the republican line. Caller i would just like to say that i appreciate the prior democrats and independents who support israel but i go beyond supporting israel and i support Benjamin Netanyahu because i think he has israels best interest at heart and he has been there a long time and understands all the times they tried to do land for peace deals , it hasnt been successful. Going back to when they kicked the jews out of their area, they wanted it to be separate. Israel wants to absorb them but dont want to be absorbed. And the surrounding arab countries that kicked the jews out into israel in the early days, they want the palestinians to be a thorn in israels side. The gaza strip to be a beautiful resort town but they choose to use their finance they get to build war machines and to attack israel before israel put the walls up, they were blowing up buses and killing children and going on farms and killing people so they had to protect themselves. But israel lives at peace with the arabs there and that is what they want. Host lets talk to guillermo from texas on the independent line. Caller this is what i think, most people are forgetting that it is an invasive species. If you post push them to the wall they will fight back. If there is going to be any peace have to start having respect. It. Has to be settled between them host lets go to it has to be settled between them. Host lets go to elijah calling on the democratic line. Caller i dont think either side is right this point in time. In this moment, israel is probably the most right for defending herself. Hamas terrorists are going door to door killing israelis and kidnapping them from their homes. Last night, Israeli Forces came out and said they would be cutting electricity export into palestine. That is only going to cause a humanitarian crisis and will make the conflict more lengthy. Host lets go to amy calling from northeast maryland on the independent line. Good morning. Caller there are some people, the issues going on right now and i grew up in the 1990s and we were taught that hamas are terrorists in the palestinians are people people. As an adult, i finally got to learn that israel is an invading force. They were given it by england when they were a colony control. As they were given that area, the israel is began to violently push out everybody. What we are seeing right now is the inevitable and notarized extremism that happens whenever a people are oppressed for this long. It is a crisis what is happening to the Palestinian People. I know that what hamas did is wrong but you have to understand the point that they are acting out of desperation. These people are hurting and they are being controlled by the americans, just as much as by the israelis. They are operating the largest openair prison. Host lets go to florida on the democratic line. Le are you therew . Lets see how the war in middle east is playing in the United States. There is a story in politico that talks about how what is going on could affect the race for speaker in the house. The attacks in israel and demand for u. S. Aid are injecting new urgency into recent talks among House Republicans to attempt to reinstate Kevin Mccarthy as House Speaker appeared scores of republican makers now discussing the effort. Gop members calls picked up after news of the attacks reached overnight friday. One House Republican lawmaker said we need to bring back kevin immediately. Lawmakers are concerned that another drawnout speakership battle will delay action to aid israel after attacks that sent the closest allies into a state of war. The republicans say they dont have time during a major emergency. Short window is all we need to reinstate Kevin Mccarthy. A representative told that to politico and also said he thought the disarray in the house was a factor in the timing of the attacks. Israeli attacks a large holding of the person who can truly unite us, Kevin Mccarthy. Once again this comes from a politico story with house moderates pushing for Kevin Mccarthy to reclaim the House Speakership so they can get help to israel faster. We want to know what you think about the surprise attack lunch on israel. You see the numbers on the screen. I want to go back to Benjamin Netanyahu. He made remarks at the security meeting in tel aviv. I want to tell you again he will be speaking in hebrew and you will see the english translation on screen. Here is what Prime Minister netanyahu had to say. [video clip] [speaking in hebrew] host that was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu telling the Security Council that he considers israel to be at war and saying they will attack the forces that are attacking them and for Israeli Citizens to continue to support the government and understand they are now at war. We want to know what you think about hamas lunching a surprise attack in israel. Start with michelle from tucson, rina on the independent line. Start with michelle, who is calling from tucson, arizona on the dependent line. Caller i voted for biden and for me it was a huge mistake one thing we are not addressing is what is going to happen here in the United States with the illegals just rushing through the border. The same think would happen here as in israel. It breaks my heart to see what is going on there. Hoabout the money he gave for the release of the hostages. Look at at has happened since he was president. I voted for him and i kick myself every day and that is all i have to say. Host lets go to robert calling from kansas on the democratic line. Caller will say that i think the only individual or Entity Organization that is in the scenario is palestine. Host lets go to conrad calling from pennsylvania on the republican line. Caller good morning. I was watching the news over the weekend of what happened in israel. The whole country is in an uproar. The cowards in washington, we have this going on every day in every city in the United States america and no one gets all up in arms. When something happens in israel, everyone is up in arms. We have killings going on every day in the United States. Host lets go to deanna from indiana on the independent line. Caller all this can be avoided if people would sit down and talk instead of using the weapons. The only ones getting hurt are the people. It is not the heads of state. It is the people and the children. They are hurting our future and these people are so stupid, since saudi arabia hooked up with china, they are getting aggressive. Palestine is being used as a pawn and they have been used too much. Host lets go to renee calling from west chester, pennsylvania. Caller sank into the lady from new york on the History Lesson because that is my understanding of israel being establish it was after the holocaust. I want to say sometimes like with hamas, these types of groups connect themselves to a weak place and the people to do their people. And my understanding is also that the money that was in exchange for the prisoner swap was not available yet and it is not available to iran just to use in any way. Someone had made a statement on the couple people called and made it very political. It is a shame. I think both groups of people and israel is a lot more powerful and are surrounded by hate but are more powerful than palestine and it is a shame that they cant come together with some sort of peaceful solution. Host lets go to bobby calling from pennsylvania on the republican line. Caller i wanted to tell everybody that if people still believe in the bible, the bible says i will bless those who bless israel. I will curse those who curse israel. Israel is the apple of gods eye. Also god made a covenant for that land with israel and you dont mess around when god makes a covenant with israel. That is their land. That is it right there. Host lets go to tom calling from morgantown. On the independent line. Caller my opinion on this whole thing is our government here in the United States has gotten their hands into everything around the world nonstop for the last 70 years. To be honest they use israel for control. It keeps creating a divide. War is money and politicians know that and it is a political ploy and the entire world is political now. It needs to stop. People need to come together and of one another and hold each others hands and help your neighbors and neighbor country. I understand the borders, that is fine and you have to have a correct way to enter the country but people have to accept them. You have to look at what they are. They are a product of their environment and they were taught to fight since they were little. It cant keep going like this. This world is coming to an end and People Better realize it. Host lets go to melvin from fort lauderdale, florida on the democratic line lets go to melvin who is calling from fort lauderdale, florida on the democratic line. Caller the woman that called and doesnt understand. Elston was divided in 1921 into 70 an arab country and the rest was a divided country on the western part. The arabs changed the name of the state from british mandatory palestine and then to eventually jordan. In 1949, the rest of the 23 that was left was divided by the united nations. The jews accepted the state and the arab countries then invaded. There was no palestine at the time. The west bank is called jordan. The Golan Heights was called syria and gaza was egypt. When they lost they didnt accept it and have never accepted jewish state and that is the essence of the problem. If you look at the videos yesterday, it is about islam controlling the area. Host lets go to linda from georgia on the republican line. Caller i think we need to be aware that we have a lot of people in the United States who could very much take over we need to be mindful of the border because people can come in and cause the same problems. Host lets go to mike from nasa, new york on the independent line mike calling from new york on the independent line. Caller the Palestinian People have been used as proxies by the other countries around them. The woman who called, israel was awarded that when 6 million jews were killed and every day israel is surrounded by people who want to see them pushed into the ocean. They came to a point where a 90 solution to give back land and the palestinians and iranians interfered. Thank you. Host we would like to thank all of our callers for the opening segment. Before we get into talking about the speakership also, i want to ask you how do you think what is going on between hamas and israel will affect the Republican Party and how does it play into the president ial nomination . Guest everyone is proisrael. People emphasize how iran outs of money at the champion Administration Trump administration. Irans funding probably play some role in this. It will be probably a benefit to donald trump. You will be able to say im the one with the most Foreign Policy experience here. Peace is breaking out at the end of my administration. That will be persuasive to a lot of republicans and may be persuasive to voters in general public. The polling lately you see the sensor trump nostalgia among voters a sense of trump nostalgia among voters. This will be another bragging point for him in denomination basil and perspective general election. Host how does it affect what is going on in the house. I read a story that said some house moderates pushing for Kevin Mccarthy to come back for speaker to get money to israel quicker instead of going through speakership battle. Kevin mccarthy has said he is not supporting this. How does this affect the negotiations going on in the house over who becomes the neck speaker, if it does at all . Guest probably not much but you would hope an indication this is a time of seriousness and a time to be serious. The real threat growing around the world but this is an internal fight in has to do with personality and internal dynamics. It is hard to get into unless you are one of the members in a closed our meeting. I doubt this will have much effect one way or the other. Host does it place any urgency on the republican to choose a speaker quickly . Guest may be more at the margins. It is important to have a speaker. You have the funding fight, mccarthy punted on. Republicans in front of republicans 45 days from now facing another potential Government Shutdown. Is that is if they need to speak up tomorrow or the next day it is not as if they need the speaker tomorrow or the next day but you do not want it to drag on. Host one of the things you have written about his Kevin Mccarthy was the last of the socalled young guns. With him losing his speakership, remind our viewers who these young guns were and how they came to power and how the lost power. Guest im not at the only want to make the observations but Kevin Mccarthy the last of the young guns, a trio of young performers in the house. Fred barnes, executive editor of the weekly standard, edited by bill kristol, associated with neoconservatism and very influential in his day. Fred barnes notice Kevin Mccarthy and said lets do a cover story on all three of them with profiles of all three. He came up with the cover line the young guns, stuck the trio, embrace that moniker. They started an Organization Called the young guns and wrote their own book about the young guns. The idea you go back and read the book, it is a time capsule. They were informers. They thought the public establishment the establishment was lazy and it had to change. The big picture what happened here was the natural ebb and full of politics. Reformers, insurgents come in they take power and there are other reformers or insurgents to begin to target them eventually. What undid them besides the hand of time, ebbing away is this Trump Associated populism. Even before the rise of trump, majority leader of the republicans or the leader of the republicans and defeated in shocking primary, underfunded, under organize college professor. Had these populist forces behind him. The forces that were disgusted by the direction of the public and party Republican Party. Did not want to do main street business friendly republicanism anymore. One year later, anything started to happen and when donald trump took this populism and ran with it and to make it bigger than ever because it was attached to celebrity, political and communication and branding skills. The next young gun the goal is paul ryan. Become speaker of the house. Ryan represented this awkward but fruitful era of cooperation with t trump. Ryan knew the party was moving away from him and his focus on helpfulness optimism and cutting spending reforming entitlement so he retires and gets out by the getting is good and you have mccarthy. More purity operator, writing was not his guy ryan was not his guy. Kevin is not winning votes. He represented the next level, they should to trump. Paul ryan getting the language from prior of from trying to overturning the election. Mccarthy saw he was still strong in the party and he had to get along with him if he wanted to win the midterms in 2022 and become House Speaker. It was a higher level of accommodation but he was undone by the same forces that ended the other two, insurgency in the house. Matt gaetz is a new player on the scene but the same tendency we have seen in the house the last 10 or 12 years, that predated trump by hate part of the establishment, suspicious of his leadership, and hates his leadership and that is what happened last week. Host what is the rise and fall of these young guns tell us about the future of the Republican Party . Guest populism is still very strong and donald trump strong. Trump is not directly responsible for what happened. He has been a mccarthy ally. Did not lift a finger to save them because the people basically his allies were against mccarthy. Took him down and trump likes being on the winning side so he was not going to try to save mccarthy if he was not salvageable. Trump exemplifies it. There is a survey had to trump at 62 nationally and ron desantis at 9 . That is abided versus rfk junior type result, speaks to trump dominance. He is softer in iowa and New Hampshire and the states can break late. So far, he is just totally overwhelmed his competition. Host viewers you can take part in the conversation. We are going to open up the regular lines. Republicans, 202 7488001. Democrats, 202 7488000. Independents, 202 7488002. You can text us at 202 7488003. We are always reading on social media cspanwj and facebook. Com cspan. You mentioned this earlier but given he was such a staunch trump ally, why did we not see former President Trump jump in to try to help Kevin Mccarthy hold onto the speakership . Even if he did, would it have worked . Guest the second question answers the first. He was not sure it wont work and he did not want to embarrass himself by being on the losing side, even if the guy he has worked closely with was targeted and going to go down. It is important to realize what happened here had a lot to do the procedure. It was not as though half of the Republican Caucus broke against Kevin Mccarthy and appalled at the way he conducted himself nine months during the speakership. A vast majority where not appalled by anything he has done. Eight members allowed to use how the rules work. The one person motion to vacate. If it had been 10, would there have been 10 members to offer that . There are not tenant doubled it against him so no. If that for the role, we would not be talking about the turmoil. Like nancy pelosi, speaker his party is happy with but the fact that one member can do this changed everything. As a narrow House Majority so you cannot was to get the four vote, triggered by a motion to vacate, you cannot lose any members. He loses eight, a small, not a lot of members but it is enough. It becomes a bigger deal. We have the division and chaos but there are all sorts of things he had more republican support that has failed. Trumps impeachment the Second Time Around that we do not talk about, the divisions and how stark they are because they did not work, because the procedure was different. It is important to keep that in mind. Host whoever the next speaker is in the house, do you think they will keep the one member motion to vacate as the will or will they need to support that get the speakership . Guest i do not know. If there is an up and down vote in the conference to have this rule or not, 95 would be against this role but was to get on the floor, once you get on the floor and there is a nominee, you going lose four or five so that gives matt gaetz and others sway. One of their demands i assume would be the role for one person motion to vacate stays the same. My guess would be it stays the same but i do not know. Host there seems to be two main opponents for the speakership. It seems to be jim jordan versus Steve Scalise. Are there any other names you are hearing out there who could possibly enter and challenge jordan and scully sciacca out of jim jordan and Steve Scalise, if they are the two main vote getters for House Speaker, who has the advantage and why . Guest i would think you would need Steve Scalise and jordan both to fail, to have no hope of getting 218 and maybe you see other candidates emerged. There has been chatter about patrick mchenry, a key mccarthy ally, most famous now for his gavel slam at the end after mccarthy loss. He almost broke the gavel. If you remember if youre an old baseball fan, bill jackson breaking his back on his leg after he strike out. Maybe someone like that can emerge but it does look like it is these two. I cannot tell you whos going to win. Even in more subtle circumstances, these things are very hard to predict. They have to do with internal and personal dynamics. If traditional rules apply, you would say Steve Scalise is favored because he is next in line. He has been around a long time. He is wellliked throughout the conference. He is more of a conservative and moderates like him as well. Personal relationships have a lot to do with this. The caveats you would have their , one, he has lung cancer. There will be concerns about how i hope he is for this which is a really taxing job about how up he is for this which is a really taxing job. There may be little doubt about that. Im not saying i know anything i do not but some members might wonder about that. Then you have jordan who has been endorsed by trump. We talk about chumps influence on the party. Trumps influence on the party. With that support, theres a lot of outside support from the more populous elements of the conservative media, conservative influence for jordan. I thought that we are not theres a thought that we would not get a lot done legislatively. You need someone whos combative which jordan is so maybe that kind of model is new for how you would leadership race overcomes Steve Scalise traditional model. I would not discount it but it is hard to say. Host we start with joseph calling from stewartstown, pennsylvania on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. I just want to turn the speakerphone off. The first thing i have to say is in my opinion the republicans i, in general, just sit out there and lied to the american public. Then you got at least three media, theyre not the media, they are propagandists. They amplify lies republicans tell. Currently they are blaming joe biden for the attack in israel. How disconnected from reality can you be . That is my opinion. My question is im not sure what republicans stand for. Months ago there were us a deal to fund the government when they raised the debt ceiling. Now, much later, that bill is no good. Deal is no good. Why is it . I realize not every republican in the house did not vote for it but you are supposed to work for the American People. The only thing i hear at least from the trump base is retribution, were going to pay you back for trying to hold me accountable. Generals, they should be assassinated. How can republicans, in good faith, say they are working for the American People . Guest they are trying to restrain at least the divisions within the party about how misspending restraints should be a priority now but certainly the valance of the party in congress is that you need to restrain spending to avoid at some point what could be a debt crisis that would question every single government commitment by the u. S. And potentially tar and the position threaten the position abroad so it is a serious matter. No one is taking it as seriously as it should be taken, even most republicans. Matt gaetz repeatedly talked about 33 trillion debt which is appropriate to focus on. But where is this plan . Especially to perform such over time which is the main drivers of this. This is a huge issue democrats have made worse. We are learning Interest Rates are not going to be low forever. We are on a trajectory where we are going to spend most of the budget, the biggest item is going to be having paying interest on our debts so spending for having spent out of control in the past which makes zero cents. The republicans are right about that. You listen to the public in the base. Republican debates. Theres not a lot of policy agreement. We need to control the border, telephone crime policy, just as the Justice Party that is fair, lower taxes, less spending, robust foster abroad posture abroad, but otherwise that party is. Donna trump any look at the issues, there is this poll the last several days that shows almost every significant issue facing the country. Donald trump is not leading jill biden. Should be a fivealarm fire for democrats who are warning about the pathetic shape jill biden is in politically and how possible it is a trump is the nominee he could lose them next year. Host speaking of trump, do you think the former president should participate in republican president ial debates . If the rest of the candidates have all of these policies agreements, how will republican voters, choose between them if they agree on everything . Guest you should participate in the debates. It is just that a civic good, the debates, it is a service to the voters for them to stand there and answer questions directly. You learn a lot from these debates even if you think all these candidates are well known commodities so yes you should participate in debates. Hes not going to participate because this calculation was it served its interest to not dissipate and it appears to be correct calculation. No one has really taken a quantum leap forward because of the debates. Even if he skips the first one or two he would have to show up, he may never have to show up which is just extraordinary. How do they take on trump or make the case against him . I should make the case he is unworthy. To be president. The next short term could be trump term the next trump term could be a disaster and it is not worth taking the risk. You see this tight rope that ron desantis has been walking where there are certain kind of criticisms he will make of trump having to do with failing to fulfill some of the key promises the first time around, electability, that case is hard to make with the following. Few issues, maybe abortion, it is a careful case and for whatever reason may be because it is overly careful or nothing is going to work and has not worked yet. Host john from pennsylvania on the republican line. Caller good morning. Thank you for cspan. We are told by these israelis and American Media that the attack on israel was a completely unprovoked attack. What is left unsaid more than 800 far right religious settlers stormed the mosque thursday morning. In addition to the large land seizures and violence by the same religious extremists settlers thats been going on for months in the west bank. They have been protected by the Israeli Military. We have been hearing on cnn that military leaders are coming on and promising massive vengeance and retribution with largely american jets, helicopters, artillery. This distraction will be largely civilian and infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and apartment blocks which had been built with american and western european funds. Will will be expected to rebuild them after these release destroy them. The isrealis destroyed them. Theres been a massive disproportionate civilian casualty. These israelis killed were well over a thousand for every israeli lost. Dont the Palestinian People have a right to defend themselves . Guest there is a lot there. All of which i reject. This operation planned for a long time, the idea of folks approaching the mosque triggered this multilayered sophisticated terrorist attack drunk given is good israel. Attack on israel makes no sense. Hamas using it as a launching pad for attacks. The idea that israel would want to go in there and at misery to the kill civilians is absurd. We have seen it the last couple of years. Israel wants to along with his neighbors if the vapors are willing to accept its existence and not launched terror attacks against it and kill civilians in the streets and kidnap his civilians. That basic condition that any society would insist on does not apply to the gaza street and hamas. Israel should do everything it can to avoid civilian casualties. Also, the idea israel going to deliberately target schools and hospitals for no reason is a complete absurd. Hamas mixes is fighters and headquarters among civilian population and in highprofile sensitive civilian building civn so israel has no choice but to hit them and when it does come hamas says look of a hit this apartment block. They use that to whip up International Opinion against israel and say this operation should and. Israel in a terrible predicament here. If all things are equal, it would be happy to attend his garden at home and contained to be a incredible successful, vibrant society that was not in a war footing constantly, but hamas and others did not want that to happen. They reject israels resistance and cannot wipe it out but they would do everything to harm israeli society. Would it be better if hamas lined up is fighters and fault at conventional army against israel . Would that be better for the civilian population . Yes but it would never do that because they would be wiped out. The equity to mix with the population and we will see they will continue to mix with the population and will continue to see tragic stories. Host theres some talk of bunkHouse Republican among House Republican that they think they should cut funding for ukraine in the battle against russia. Any concern about them saying perhaps you should not be giving money to israel for is about against hamas . Guest yes. That would be a kind of consistent position. If in the scheme of things, it is a lot of money, but in terms of the deficits and debt we are facing, it is not if giving that to ukraine is what is going to bankrupt us and make it impossible to have Border Security at home or have disaster relief, why would it not that same argument apply to israel . That would be consistent. I guess you could argue israel more important to us that ukraine is. Especially the same it is basically the same basic logic. We are not fighting directly. Without us not risk and whatsoever. That seems to be a good thing. Hamas hates the u. S. As well and they do not have the power to reach here and carry out the operation they did in israel but it is an enemy of the u. S. And you have israelis fighting the enemy of the u. S. And we do not have to risk our blood either. Proxy warfare, if you do not have to engage directly, if it wears down your enemy, it is an enormous strategic benefit. Ive been reading about the napoleonic wars and britain made the defeat of napoleon possible and they directly fault in spain and portugal and later at waterloo but what they did was funded everyones else was fighting napoleon. If that is he had the possibility do that, it seems like a good thing, strategic and if it. Republicans have gotten into their head this is a terrible think we are spreading this money and i do not think it makes a lot of sense. Host christopher from florida on the independent line. Caller good morning. I was calling to say american voters, some of them is the most silliest, whatever. Who are you listening to this stuff about why are you listening to this stuff about mccarthy . Republicans broke rules and regulations. I give it to mccarthy because he looked out for the american soldiers and they family. Republicans that was holding up the bill and did not care nothing about the American People or the soldiers in this country. Mccarthys that. Mccarthy stood up and made the the decision for the American People. Trump needs to go ahead and sit down somewhere because he is selling this country out when he made a statement about the best way not to be detected by the nuclear submarines. Host go ahead and respond. Guest mccarthy, he offered this bipartisan socalled continuing resolution to avoid shut down. He had no alternative. He thought if there was a shut down, it will be blamed on which it would have been, and he went to the other side and did what he thought was the right thing and i think it was the right thing to do. It is not as though it passed just with democratic voters, and got 169 republican votes and matt gaetz says he sold us out working with the democrats even though he got 169 republican votes. So im going to do is work with the Democratic Caucus and seven republican colleagues and take you out. Trump with the submarines, we need to learn more. A lot of the trump stories i have learned over the years, a third of them are untrue my third of them are exaggerated and it always pays to wait a little bit at the initial breaking news to see which of those third category story might fall in. Host with Kevin Mccarthy losing the speakership because he worked with the democrats to keep the government open does it guarantee who the next speaker is were not keep the government open with the continuing resolution inside next month . Guest this is why for matt gaetz purposes if you think ahead, he would have waited for him he would us at this is a terrible what mccarthy is doing and i think about the the motion for vacate and wait five days when mccarthy would have to do it again and one reason he had to do it the first time around is because it would not vote for any possible republican alternative which would not have believed mccarthy of the allegation to go to the democrats but would have given more leverage to get better deal. Matt gaetz would have made rights after this and waited for 45 days when mccarthy had to do it again. Then offered his motion, then take it mccarthy down because Government Shutdown is passed us but now it is ahead of us deliver the next speaker is, there will be pressure on him to say no, i am not going to do what mccarthy did and go into a shut down. After a shut down, it is not as though a shut down is every day Jill Joe Biden gets weaker. The new speaker will have to go to democrats as well and do the exact same thing that mccarthy did and what does matt gaetz saved in . He will find a reason i think to not take out the new speaker because perhaps the new speaker would have gotten his affirmative vote and just doing this twice in a couple months would be probably even too ridiculous for matt gaetz and his cohorts to bear but it is a great question. Host do you think an actual Government Shutdown will hurt the Republican Party when it comes to elections in november 2024 or are we as americans over the said alice and do not think of them anymore over the shutdowns and we do not think of them anymore . Guest i dont think many people do anymore. It will have to have severe consequences filled by the big part of the public and it seems unlikely and it is also people who watch cspan, the two of us, we follow the news extremely closely so when mccarthy, the initial vote to make a speaker went on so long as a historic fashion, this is really chaotic, it is unusual, most people zero effect. They have gone about their lives. They do not know who the speaker is and they did not care. The same thing here and if they shut down as long as it is not extremely extended to him i think it is not have any that people are not going to call people are not going to recall it at all in november 2024. This time around the suitability of both nominees to be president. If it is joe biden, his health and age could be a major concern and if it is trump, january 6 and that stuff will be thrown at him. Host pete from pennsylvania on the democratic line. Caller good morning. Im a military veteran. My family goes back to wait in the service. I would like to know your thoughts on the losers and suckers we are first serving, our family step up to the call, now we know it is true because john kelly is not going to go on the record, if it is not true. It seems nobody questions trump on the subject. I would like to know your thoughts because people need to wake up and know what this guy thinks about the military. Guest i salute you and your family for their service. It is extremely important. If trump said this, is terrible, shameful thing to say. It will be difficult to convince most republicans that this is what he thinks of the military given just how otherwise their public statements and how promilitary he is. A big military parade when he was president which was a scandal, but the thing about trump, he says so many outrageous and controversial stings, they just all kind of blur together. I follow the news obsessively as i was noting. This is not really has been on my radar. One attend stories last week. Anyone else one of 10 stories last week. Any one else it will probably be a career enter. With trump it is just a blur. It is true that for ron desantis or nikki haley said it, any of the things he says are truth social, it will be a huge deal, enormous scandal, enormous firestorm but we just got used to it with muzaffar chishti. Host glenn on the republican line. Caller good morning. What happened to israel yesterday is the result of what donald trump did in iran and afghanistan. With joe biden be in afghanistan which both of those people did the wrong thing. What happened yesterday is what happened to congress . You still there . Host we are still there. Caller what happened yesterday with the nonsense about mccarthy what happened yesterday is the result of what the Marjorie Taylor greene and those republicans want to do to ukraine, throw them under the bus. Lastly, all these trump sters who think he is not a sedation is, he just convicted what he did in january 6. Guest a lot there. I think at the end of the day, there are policies that are better and worse for the u. S. And the middle east, but this is a conflict that has been enduring and persistent and is going to continue almost no matter what we do. I would not hamas has been attacking israel for a long time. As a deep philosophical hatred of israel. Wish we had a magical wand but we do not. It is going to do what is going to do. Trump, the biden trump matchup which very likely, is going to be the most we say often whatever the next residential election is, the most consequential of our lifetimes, in this case, it is going to be the wildest president ial election of our lifetimes. The wildcard represented by the trials along were trump will spend weeks at the for stables at various trials and potentially could be convicted of felonies about running for president and there could be some attempt i do not think it is happened but it is possible, and attempt to put him in jail while he is running for president. That is just one of the crazy things that can happen next year. If it is trump biden, buckle your seatbelts. Host we would like to thank rich lowry for coming on with us today in talking about the speakership battle. What is going on in the middle east and everything that is going on with the Republican Party. Inc. You for your time. Guest thank you for having me. Thank you to your viewers. Host coming up next, katrina, the editor will join us to give his her perspective of the weeks events. But first, we were to take more calls about our question of the day. Hamas launching a rprise attack on israel with hundreds killed, you see our numrs on the screen. Please cl in and let us know what you thi of what is going on. Will be right back. I want to update you on the numbers of the dead we are seeing in israel. And the gaza strip from the Associated Press, and a bit of a story from this morning. The death toll in israel following surprise attacks by hamas stands at 600 according to several is really as rally media outlets. Reportedly told sunday. No official confirmation on the number of deaths on the israeli side since the fighting erupted. Palestinian Officials Say more than 300 people have been killed in gaza. Without differentiating between fighters and civilians. That is from the Associated Press with israeli media citing more than 600 have been killed in israel with the palestinian Officials Saying more than 300 people have been killed in gaza. We want to know what you think about hamas launching the surprise attack. George calling from pine ridge, south dakota on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. I would like to mention hello . Host you are on. Caller i would like to know more about the occupation of palestine, the illegal occupation by israel, a violation of the a course accords and the other attempts at peace and continual violation by israel, taking illegally lands and property of the palestinians and the hamas and Palestinian People when they fight back, they are called monsters, they are called terrorist. Israelis Defense Forces blow up people home and kill people and drag children out. Still their property and i think more Media Attention should be given to the palestinian cause. I did not know they are terrorist. I think theyre fighting for the country or their lands, for the rights. I did not know why theyre so much media bias against palestinians. Is it because of their color, racism embedded in the middle east and elsewhere . Host connie calling from illinois on the republican line. Caller these people have no idea what they are talking about. Israel was promised to the hebrews over 4000 years ago when moses led his people out of egypt. They were headed to israel, the land of milk and honey. Gods chosen land for the hebrews. It was given to them over 2000 years ago. Palestine did not exist. Israel used to be almost the size of illinois. For peace, they gave up this land, that land, they give up the sinai peninsula, they had given up the west bank, the gaza strip. They have given up their land and given up their land. They are now about one third the size of israel should be. God is setting up for the return of jesus christ. Host sharon calling from new jersey on the independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. I have been sitting here. Listen to the democratic caller before me and the republican caller. I hear both sides of the argument. Initially, i was on both sides of the argument. I used to find it ironic that israel spent i do not know the last 30 weeks protesting against the for their rights and yet i found it very ironic that israel could not understand the rights of the palestinians. However, with this strike by hamas and obviously we think is going to come in and they kidnap and have people spread throughout hamas territory. It seems to me this has been years in the planning. I am very angry about the fact that the palestinians and everyone came to israel for some type of peace. I think right now it is incumbent on israel to do what they have to do. I do not believe there going to get the hostages back. It is a terrible shame. Finally, i want to say to the American People that were fronting ukraine, this is what happens when you let people invade your lands. Host terrel from anna mills, maryland on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Im going to go back a bit because i think by donald trump the iran deal, it a direct result of what youre going to get. Israel has the iron dome and from what i am hearing, there were no others or nothing coming in, although, there were 2000 bombs that went off. 2000 bombs performance israel and the iron dome was not injected. I heard a lady say they did not get any warnings on their cell phones. Going back to the iran deal, donald trump secretary of state said to stay in the deal. Ive been following this. I called in when you had iranian experts to talk about the iran deal. I took a survey of my own. I saw two of the people i asked she we have stayed in the deal and both of your experts said we should have. They talk about cash and 6 million iran is going to send the palestinians. Barack obama sent them 125 billion. The republicans are all over the place. I do not know netanyahu is in cahoots with the republicans. I did not know if he did this to his people, but i hope not but if he did not alert his own people, Something Else is going on that they have the iron dome. Host anita calling from North Carolina on the republican line. Caller good morning. I want to agree with one of the callers that said the media is vice towards the palestinians. They do not given equal coverage. You have the palestinians country given to israel. It was originally palestine. The woman that said that israel [indiscernible] host unfortunately, your cell phone signal was breaking up so we will have to keep going. Ethan calling from pennsylvania on the independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Thank you for cspan for giving a voice to the average american. I think its great for our democracy. Like most people, i was horrified yesterday to hear about the attack in israel. I was also horrified by some the reactions ive been seeing a line from people who have been on the palestinian side of things. Not condemning the horrific atrocities committed by hamas terrorist. I have been seeing a lot of ignorance of history in these in rear israelpalestine conflict, there a lot of people who dont understand there has been a deal twice to provide two states, one for israel and one for palestine and this has been rejected by the palestinian authorities. Hamas is the governing party and it is hamas committing these atrocities. It is horrifying. I dont how you can look at palestine and what it is doing as other than state sponsored terrorism. After yesterday i think all americans should do the same. Host there is concern the powerful u. S. Intelligence agencies and the agents of israel did not know about this massive attack before it happened yesterday. Here is a story from nbc news that talked a little about what happened. The surprise attack by hamas on israel suggests a massive intelligence failure as the Israeli Government was blindsided by hamas fighters in the launch of thousands of rockets. The hamas assault by air, land, and c also raised questions as to why u. S. Intelligence agencies apparently did not see it coming. Former intelligence officials said u. S. Officials said if the israelis knew an attack was imminent they did not share it with washington. We were not whacking tracking this one official told the news. Enhancing intelligence with the israelis in supporting the israelis in response to the attack. Additional intelligence to israel could include information gathering from drones, eavesdropping and satellites but the officials did not elaborate. Once again, apparently the u. S. And Israeli Intelligence services did not know about the hamas surprise attack before it happened which some are same is an incredible intelligence failure on part of both the Israeli Intelligence agencies and the United States intelligence these. We want to know what you think about hamas launching a surprise attack on israel that led to the deaths of hundreds of people both in israel and in the gaza strip. Lets talk to richie who is talking from stamford, nnticut on the democratic line. Caller i am on the palestinian side on this. It he 48 after the war, none of the exiled country wanted the jewish people to move to the country. So written came up with the deal of splitting them into two. Since then, the israelis have taken over the whole country and have shoved the palestinians into the corners of israel. They controlled their border, electricity, everything that flows to the palestinians is controlled by the israelites. How could you expect people to live like that talking dog it is taunting the dog, it will bite you. The palestinians have been treated like dirt for years. Israel is the most apartheid country in this world and nobody says anything about that. I dont understand that. Host lets go to mavis from galveston, texas on the independent line. Caller i could not agree more with the last caller. In 1948, they couldve come to the u. S. Or the u. K. But we didnt want them. We didnt want them in our country, which is sad so we decided to them in the middle of the desert. They decided to pick up fighting with people already living there. They came in and started testing weapons that the United States was using. If you have a brother or sister or something and you know how signaling sibling rivalry goes, if you call them names or hit them they will hit you right back because at the end of the day they are just trying to survive. The United States got in and funded with the help of the u. K. And they are just innocent people. Hamas has done bad things but so has israel. Israel has done a lot of stuff we dont want to address but when palestine or hamas does it it is bad but when israel does it it is ok in the eyes of the u. S. And other parts of the world. Host lets go to georgia with henry, we lost henry. Lets go to dominic from ontario, canada. Caller this is the second apartheid government america has supported with munitions and money. It is not the first time, the second time. Money and weapons to kill people. It is onesided warfare. We need to get onto the side that is righteous, which is the palestinian side because they are fighting for their survival. Host s signal also seems to be dropping in and out. Lets go to joe calling from maine on the independent line. Caller thanks for taking my call. I have been enjoying the last couple of calls. My goodness. What happened . Caller you had the previous caller on the panel telling us that donald trump could live with impunity. This is ridiculous. Host lets go to lyle calling from yuma, arizona on the republican line. Caller good morning. An attack on israel is an attack on christian beliefs. There is anyway i could go fight for israel, i would do that even though i am an old man. What hamas is doing to the israeli people, taking children and women hostage and dragging bodies through the streets is completely unnecessary. That is terrible. That is all i got to say. Host the New York Times has a story that talks about how the Biden Administrations plans for peace in the middle east has been affected by what is going on right now with the hamas attack. For months, the Biden Administration has been pursuing an ambitious diplomatic project to design a new middle east for a new era. But the middle east still has something to say about it. The stunning hamas attack on israel serves as a gut wrenching reminder that the decades old conflict with the palestinians means a cancer. U. S. Leaders in washington, jerusalem and other arab cap bills capitals are it was too early to say if it was to disrupt President Bidens idea to broker a deal between israel and saudi arabia that would reorient the middle east. They acknowledge it would complicate the already delicate negotiations and make it that much harder to reach an agreement akin to the Abraham Accords between israel and smaller arab nations. This will slow considerably if not kill the Abraham Accords deal of former mideast peace diplomat under a barack obama says. It strikes at the heart of the key elements of ash on the israeli side, there will be zero appetite across a wide political spectrum for helping palestinians. Despite the fact in so doing would enhance not detract from israeli securities. That comes from a New York Times story saying that bidens hopes for middle east are impaired by the violence this weekend. We want to know what you think about hamas launching surprise attacks on israel. Lets go back to the phone lines and talk to samuel who is calling from dayton, ohio on the independent line. Caller good morning. I just want to say a few things. The real issue we are not really addressing, i dont believe the issue is being addressed. I came here from the middle east 40 years ago. Host from your television down and go ahead. Caller this has been going on for centuries, i think as long as we are not addressing the real issue for economically host we seem to have lost samuel. Lets go to mark from lauderdale, florida on the democrat line. Caller the. This is certainly not the subject i wanted to call about. I am an american who also happens to be jewish. I do support israel and its right to exist but that does not mean i dont think palestinian deserve and should have their own life. The sheer amount of mis information and i hate to use the term ignorance of calls you have gotten is so monumental. I got distressed over it so i decided to call and talk about it. You probably should get some real experts and i hope that it would be a Panel Discussion where you have one is really and one palestinian so they can talk together rather than i heard on some of the news channels earlier where whoever they talked to was only going to talk about their side. The real problem with this happening now is netanyahu was on his heels with all of the protests about israelis not wanting what he had planned for their Supreme Court and his actual crimes he is being charged for. And now with the attacks once again you hear on the news about he and his super right cronies, they are saying lets level gaza and that cannot be good for anyone. Host lets talk to surge calling from East Brunswick new jersey on the republican line caller . Republican line. Caller i think the United Statesas to stick with israel and continue to support and back israel to the fullest extent they can because the other countries arent exactly our friends. They are organizations the palestinians have aligned themselves with and they are terrorist countries for the most part, iran, iraq. What happened this weekend is just evidence of the biden failure to perform their job adequately. Host we would like to thank all of our callers who called in for that segment. We will be joined by katrina vanden heuvel, editorial director and publisher of the nation, for her take on the events. We will be right back. Host we are backed and we are joined by katrina vanden heuvel, editorial director and publisher of the nation, and she is here to discuss the upcoming battle of the next House Speaker, the aggressive agenda and camping 2024. Good morning of the nation, good morning. Guest thank you. Host i to talk about how the hamas attack will affect the Biden Reelection Campaign and control of the house and senate. Guest it is a big question and still early. What is important is stepping back the civilian killings are horrific. President biden and the Democratic Party, much will not cause call for the ceasefire or deoccupation. There are groups in washington which work with political figures which counter the right forces of impact. They have been trying to suppress alternative views on how to forward with this more peaceful policy if that is possible. There is also the saudi normalization track which biden has touted. It is complicated. I dont see benefits at this point because the Democratic Party at the establishment level is not speaking out and how to put humane and creative ways. It is difficult for the establishment wing of the Democratic Party and for biden who has been in Foreign Policy arenas for decades, he is oldfashioned in the sense of not fully seeing it in the new feast. I think it is going to be complicated. Host republicans trying to blame the white house and President Biden for the hamas attack using the prisoner swap and the relief of iran money through the deal. Do you think that will hurt President Biden for those accusations . Guest there are several layers of politics in this country, inside washington and inside the fight between think tanks. There are a lot of flies. Jd vance went on the other day about the unfrozen money is for weapons. If is just bogus and i think it is important for the media to expose and a truth telling way, there is no question that the Democratic Party over the years has been concerned with with iran. The pictures of death to america , this is not helpful. At the same time we need iran in terms of nuclear proliferation, collaboration. I am worried that President Biden is going to become a war president and in some ways he already has with ukraine. Will these temper and possibly lead to more sanity about ukraine . I think reconstruction of ukraine will be very critical to ensuring ukraine is a democratic 14th country. Questions are now being raised but President Biden continues to say we will do whatever is needed for ukraine. It is not clear that will be of great value to the train who Needs Resources to rebuild. Of course weapons are the first line of two ukraine Needs Resources to build. Of course weapons are the first line. Host are these two completely different issues unrelated . Guest i dont think they are unrelated. Netanyahu has relations with putin. Nothing is unrelated when it comes to war. I think you now have instability and war and civilian casualties and brutality in several theaters or arenas. The risk for biden, and President Trump, how the media covers President Trump is still up for grabs eight years into fit. When he talks about how he would never let this happen and talked about toughness, he is a mouthpiece but it is a series issue how we resolve serious conflicts in the world and it is more difficult you have it people think if you dont give more weapons you are able puppet of putin. Of course we grieve for the civilian casualties and what is happening to israel but there is also a context of brutal occupation which has lasted for decades and cannot be forgotten because people there have also died. The challenge to the media and the Democratic Party which has been divided on issues of war and peace and it is a challenge to the Democratic Party. Host lets talk about how this is playing in congress. The gop does not have a House Speaker right now. If you think what happened past weekend will have them put their internal divisions aside and choose a House Speaker so there is a functioning congress so they can make decisions on whether it wants to send more money to the rain and israel . Guest functioning, lets try and take it down a notch. I dont think it will be functional. When you look at mccarthy, the seeds of his destruction were seen in how he was elected. That was not a shocker. Shocker is how the country is moving along without his finger. I think it will be between three or two people, jordan, scullys. Trump has said he wanted to be in there too. Any external forces right now i dont think is going to change the dynamics of how the house ship forms. Both gleason and jordan are opposed to sending more weapons to crane. What has changed in the last years peoples are weaker in terms of support for more and more weapons. I think when you have diminishing support, it is hard to sustain a war footing and the money. I think it has been 131 billion weapons, humanitarian aid to ukraine. That is the largest amount of money, a larger than egypt, israel that we have given funds to an their fist question of if that is the best way to preserve a democratic ukraine. Host our viewers can take part. We are going to open regular lines, for republicans, who want to hear from you at 202 7488001, democrats your line is going to be 202 7488000, independents you can call in at 202 7488002. Keep in mind you can always text your opinion to 202 7488003. And we are always reading on social media on next at on x and instagram. There has been some conversation it conversation even today that fit for House Democrats that kicked mccarthy out there were a few republicans but some people are saying democrats may have overstepped by getting out mccarthy and freeing in more conservative school lease or whoever the republicans choose. Did they do the right thing by getting fresh out . Guest i am more involved with the progressive caucus, an Important Group in the house. I think they felt they stood tall and pushed back and in that they acquired more running room and power. I dont think there was a mistake made by the progressive caucus. I think it is a weakened Republican Caucus. It is clearly divided and fractured in ways the democrats are less so in the Insurgent Forces played a good role. There was talk of husky being speaker. That is not of the agenda. But are a lot of machinations. There is the where these machinations that relate to peoples lives and how they live seem so distance that people are sort of fed up with the dysfunction. There are things being done and stops that mean much to families, like childcare, the reduction of poverty. Republicans basically wash it so that it didnt continue. That think it means to people lives to pass legislation that actually can be shown to improve the conditions of peoples lives and that link is being broken, pressure to the dysfunction to some elements the republicans thrive on. If you have a lot of people in government this is not a new phenomenon. Reagan about government as an alien force and roosevelt described it. It is important to remember think about what is happening in washington. Host has been pushed back on the Biden Administration for financing plans for four wall construction. Where do you stand on that issue and do you see that as a growing fracture in the Democratic Party that the Biden Administration own brought up . Guest this is a critical issue for our country being forward. There are no easy answers. I see it in new york city, the influx of immigrants, many of them housed in shelters for hotels. They seek to work and want to fulfill asylum papers there is a time when you cant work and are in the streets and there is cynicism on part of the governors who shift shift these people. It resides in a congress that would be functional and that has not been case for decades. I do think, and it is hard for people to talk about the roots of problems for it seems distant. It is not immediate as many wish solutions could be. There was a woman on the street selling mangoes the other day around the corner. She did here because she wanted a job. Her country, i think with columbia, where there are mexico for fellow problems that could fitfully for a better life. We need to address the root causes and meetings between blinken or kamala with mexican officials is not going to do it. Have to be a sustained process. It will affect both. There is a way to affect security and safety but it is going to be tough. Host new york city mayor eric adams has been one of the most outspoken critics of the white house along with illinois governor jb pritzker. They have been at odds with the white house over the odds of the migrant and border policy and have been calling for major changes. Guest they want federal assistance. New york city this the also state is dense assistance but you need federal involvement that is not happening as the migrants are pushed to illinois, new york. The cynicism of it and the cruelty of it is to be studied. You have people who kind of enjoyed think for host lets let viewers take part of enjoy it. Host lets let viewers weigh in. Caller i was watching the news into the night about israel. I heard at the tail end of the night that israel was trying to do business with saudi arabia. The question in my mind is, israel keeps calling the palestinians terrorists and hear the israelis are wanting to do some Nuclear Program with saudi arabia and they are not terrorists. And if the americans dont consider saudi arabians terrorists after 9 11 i dont know hit anyone how anyone can do business with them. Guest the United States has been doing business with saudi arabia for many years, certainly prior to 9 11. We talk about human rights, free world and yet we are doing business with saudi arabia. And the color is light that the treaty that the United States has played a role in affecting a between israel and saudi arabia is something that was of great concern to the palestinians. I think it should be of concern to us as people talk about human rights. I think the color is right in putting that into context. We need some history to understand what we are witnessing. Again it is on the 50th anniversary of the yom kippur war. There are issues around us that have to be explored for the saudi deals was sugar in force. Host level question from a social media ill wear want you to weigh in on the president ial election in what you think about President Bidens future in the question is, what is the likelihood that biden will have one or two new democratic primary challengers emerge within the next month or that he will dispense his campaign altogether . What do you think . Guest think that President Biden is going to stay in place. I think that what certainly the nation as progressives, independents, we have been looking for an Insurgent Force that would not be an independent separate candidate would push find two take positions he might otherwise take. Im thinking about economic stances be more bold. Not a candidate, because in 2020 and 2016, Bernie Sanders was a challenger and policies that are more populist or independent. But will he have challengers inside the Democratic Party put Robert Kennedy junior likely to announce in philadelphia this wednesday that he is going to run i think on the libertarian or as an independent. And that is a challenge. Cornell west doesnt have a constituency. He is an extraordinary figure and he has decided to run as an independent, not in a green party. There is a lot of talk about who might come in. Pritzker, forces period in the real strength is to drive the politics in a more insurgent and progressive weight to groups and forces and states have those politics to show they have an impact on peoples lives. I think what is happening with the media is an over coverage of bidens health. Not just fox. But you think about the failure to really cover trumps violent language in the week, we dont pay enough attention. And then the coverage of bidens dog. There is something about media malpractice kind of strange way of covering the presidency but i will say one thing, the ringing of the primaries by the d c is not dnc is not a good sign of democracy. Host what do you mean by that . Guest so what has happened, first of all there was a dnc meeting a few months ago in which the dnc committee wouldnt band dark money in democratic primaries. That is not saying you cant take dark money in general but in democratic primaries. And in st. Louis recently, hampshire, the votes, it is cap clear they will be counted. This is what moves Bobby Kennedy junior to say if they are not going to count my votes, what am i doing in this democratic primary. I do think it is a bad look for the dnc. They have decided that New Hampshire is not the first in the nation. But there needs to be some ways to account for votes to be counted. There is a little bit of a sense of rigging the game that has animated people. It is the establishment force deciding. They could be a little more nimble. Host lets talk to bob who is calling from baldwinsville, massachusetts on the independent line. Caller my question is, and i have to know because of something you said a little while ago is how far do you think we should become involved in the conflict in israel . Because of what you said before, id like to say about the palestinians, it is ok for them to judiciously attack the israelis. They ran into their country and shot children with no care or whatever at all. So israel shouldnt react to that at all . They should just let it happen . Guest of course not, of course not. All violence should be condemned. I talked earlier about the civilian silence against civilians. All i am saying is we have seen so much a violent person many decades in this region that at some. 1 has to step back. It is not my right to, it is not living i am not living there but from afar you ask what it would take to end. I think they are serious people who have thought and studied for decades the conditions and prices and to just leave it go would mean endless cycles of violence. I think anyone for that is mad. Host back to the 2024 elections, you had a column in the guardian, a story in the guardian that has the headline of democrats must keep the senate at all costs and the canary is ohio. What did you mean by that . Guest the Senate Becomes critical because of courts but the courts might not be in play but the senate is critical. Ohio they had the highlight but i was really talking about Sherrod Brown, the last remaining statewide democrat in the state of ohio. J. D. Vance won with the democrats opposing him. The question is what is happening to the states they are turning red and what can we do . It shouldnt just be Sherrod Brown and i was in idaho a few months ago and the largest part and you had George Mcgovern from south dakota, one from indiana, fred harris from oklahoma, a whole network of heartland populists and they are not there anymore. The time a craddick party didnt Pay Attention to the industrialization. Democrats got nailed for that. And then race and other issues, but it is worth reflecting on the shifting times in ohio. I think the winning pattern for the democrats in 2024 is wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania. Ohio is not in play. And it is hard to see democrats taking back florida. Host are you saying that President Biden doesnt have a chance to win or democrats . I just want to make sure i know what you are talking about. Guest i think President Biden has a chance but democrats have a harder chance. Host lets talk to stephen who is calling from cap, new mexico from new mexico on the republican line. Caller my first question is, how do you win an election sitting on a president ial election sitting in a basement . I dont care what is going on in the rest of the world, how do you do that . That is one way Big Questions about the election. Biden from day one has been tearing this country apart. Have let in millions of immigrants who do not belong here. You have no idea who is in this country right now. And also, since we have gotten so selfcentered throughout the ages, we now acquired three things we can torch the earth with, the atomic bomb, the virus which is going to continue to mutate, it isnt going to go away, it will continue to kill and then we had to go and develop ai which Everyone Wants to give their human rights to. Guest i suggest you identify one of those issues and make it your priority because i think you will go under it with the weight of all of those. I dont think joe biden is in a basement. I think he should get out more. I do want to say he is the first president to go on a picket line with workers. You may disagree with that but he certainly got out and did that and people in the Obama Administration like steve ratner, the investment, denounced biden for that saying you have to be neutral. I would say that your point about Nuclear Weapons, this is one of the great mysteries how we have denied the possibility that we could see the use of tactical or other weapons as a result of ukraine and the way Nuclear Weapons are now discussed too often is normalizing the possibility of use. This is one of the great dangers. Host howdy think progressives should navigate this upcoming possible how do you think progressives should navigate the upcoming possible Government Shutdown given the controversy on the republican side with the speaker and the fact that we have elections coming up . Guest they have been doing it. We have one coming up in 45 days. I think the progressive democrats have been firm in describing that a shutdown would be cool to those who depend on government services. Those are the essential workers we treated so badly are highlighted during the covid pandemic. I think the democrats would be wise to find a way, not just to allocate blame but to speak to what they are for in the context of loss of services for people who really need them. Host one of the things i asked rich lowry of the National Review that there have been some the shutdowns that almost like a normal part of washington and people will likely forget about it before the next upcoming election. Do you think that things like shutdowns affect people outside . I was talking to someone and they said the know the National Parks will be closed but the government workers get their money eventually so this really doesnt mean anything. Do Government Shutdowns mean anything anymore . Guest to make it mean something is the first step. A lot of people live paychecktopaycheck. I think there is a difference in the way the shutdown is perceived inside washington as a kind of fracture is battle as opposed to something that relates to needs people have in this country and how the media covers the shutdown and the kind of madness of it, it is quite extraordinary. There is a lightness about it because people dont take it that seriously because they will survive it is a measure of resilience but it is not healthy. The fundamental question is why do we have these Government Shutdowns . You almost need an anthropologist to visit through. This one was particularly crazy. I think it should raise questions about what the alternatives are in terms of governing. Host lets talk to teresa calling from San Bernardino california on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller i have two comments. I feel strongly that the Biden Administration needs to take our Border Control crisis more seriously. It infuriates me everyday as i am driving and i see so many Homeless People on the streets. We have people in our own country that dont have a place to stay or eat or live. Yet we are bringing in millions and millions of immigrants into the country and i am not against immigration however we need to take control. When they say the people, whether you are a democrat or public in, we are very concerned about your own american citizens not being sheltered or provided or water or a place to live or jobs. The second question and comment i have is the fracture within the Republican Party. It was really saddening to see the hostage takeover between the republicans. This country was built on a democratic and republican and i believe is very hurtful for us to be in the situation and this is not how our government should be ran at this time. Guest there is an importance in studying American History that i am struck that january 6 is what we remember. It is also when roosevelt delivered his speech. I think there is a resilience the american system. How can you think democrats and republicans werent at each others throats. There have always been fights over the war, economy, a set of issues. It is more dysfunctional now for a variety of reasons but part of the american political tradition to have partisanship which sadly, and i feel complicit in this is created a food fight when partisanship or trans partisanship you come with your own views invite for them and there is no harm in that. There has been a basement coverage in media practice that has made people sick of it but it is part of the american view. Host lets talk to lynn conklin stamford, connecticut on the independent line. Calling from stamford, connecticut on the independent line. Caller i want to know what you think about progressive people who dont agree with their policies as a racist. Also, Hillary Clinton called the people who follow trump, and im an independent, so i am talking outside of that, but i didnt like when she called the people who wanted to back trump as deplorable. I didnt like the language and i think that we should all have freedom of thought and freedom of speech that is what i am worried about. Guest thank you for the question about Hillary Clinton. In many ways i thought it was a statement that was mischaracterized and with the announcement that defeated Hillary Clinton. She was speaking at a humans human rights dinner and the rest of the, after deplorables was not included she was talking about the need for a Just Transition to alternative jobs in communities that were ravaged by loss of mining and those issues. I do think it is a mistake. We have a good piece about West Virginia and trying to understand where people are coming from. It is more the invisibles, the ones ravaged by depths of despair. Those are the ones who voted for Bernie Sanders. He won that town. There is a different kind of politics that has a winning edge and i agree with you. The issue of race, i think people jump to it too quickly but it is there. It has been through all parties but if you think of Ronald Reagan announcing his campaign, i believe it was in philadelphia, there was a reason he did that, to signal where he stood. If you look at the footage, you can see remnants. It is a signal he wanted. Host earlier mentioned that Robert Kennedy junior is likely to announce an independent bid for president against President Joe Biden and whoever the republican nominee will be but likely former president donald trump. Who does this bid hurt the most. Does it hurt the republican for democratic side . Guest asked viewers to turn to the nation. Com where it is not clear. One of the key things is all of the thirdparty candidates, seek valid access. On the issues, it is not clear. It is clear he would take from biden voters. Host lets talk to kathleen who is calling from colorado on the independent line. Guest katrina, i have such respect for you with your sober and rational analysis. On the israelipalestinian issue, i have been requesting for two years that washington journal do a program and i cant find anything in the archives about the amnesty report, the u. N. Report, human rights report on the apartheid condition ands in israel. So people have context. You talked about the loss of life on both sides is horrendous but you and i and others who are well informed know about the history of the oppression of the palestinians and the occupation of the internationally recognized land but i asked that cspan cover those reports so people like the earlier caller can have more context about what is and has been going on for decades with the palestinians. I also asked, do you think the democrats would have been better off keeping the devil we all know with Kevin Mccarthy versus the possibility of jim jordan coming into play. And i want to encourage, i spent part of my time in colorado and grew up in dayton, ohio and i have questions about senator Sherrod Brown who i worked for his senate campaign. I also want to say this, in ohio i sat and still sit with Trump Supporters and people who have no fallen away from trump and i just encourage the public to have conversations. I have had civil conversations with three that are still Trump Supporters. I am a sanders motor and i think we can have conversations. I have been having them for years with Trump Supporters. Guest i will just say, secular amen to what you said at the beginning which is to understand the context of history. There was an Israeli Defense force general yesterday who raised the question of israeli apartheid. We need to know the history. I recommend people read the nation. I also most heartily recommend there is an ability to talk to people. You may disagree fundamentally but the ability to talk is vital for the future of this country. Host thank you so much for your time. We would like to thank katrina vanden heuvel or spending time with us this morning. Guest thank you. Host good like to thank all of our colors in social media viewers for another Great Washington journal. Please continue to wash her hands and stay safe.
