Latest bucket of targeted Student Debt Relief his administration has approved. Since the beginning of the administration the education document has been working on making changes to various existing programs that provide debt relief and student debt cancellation to borrowers. Those changes have been happening sort of on a parallel track to the broader question of whether the administration can cancel large amounts across the board of student debt for borrowers. What the administration did yesterday is focus on targeted individual groups of borrowers. For example, the administration announced that some number of borrowers will receive debt relief under the Public Service len Forgiveness Program which offers Public Service workers those working for the government or nonprofit the opportunity to have their debt cancel after 10 years of making payments. That was marred in administrative problems and bureaucrat obstacles and they made it easier to get relief and yesterday a handful several thousand of them received relief. There were a couple other buckets of relief the administration announced yesterday, including for borrowers who have been in repayment on their loans for more than 20 years and havent been able to pay it off in a lot of cases, seeing their balances increase even though they might have been paying because of compounding interest on the loans. Then the administration announced that a group of borrowers who have severe and permanent disabilities would be able to receive left hand discharges. That is an existing federal program, borrowers who develop severe disabilities after taking out their loans are entitled under federal law to have their debts forgiven but that is another program where it was difficult for borrowers to access because of administrative barriers, paperwork. So the administration automatically or would automate that for borrowers. The Social Security administration had determined they were disabled. Michael, if you didnt fall into the bucket you talked about and you have been getting some relief from your Student Loans due to the pandemic legislation or ruling, what can you expect now . Guest for the vast majority of federal student loan borrowers payments are resuming this month for the First Time Since march 2020. At the beginning of the pandemic. First President Trump and then congress and President Biden enacted a series of pauses and freezes on federal Student Loans and most federal student loan borrowers havent had to pay since the beginning of the pandemic. As part of the debt ceiling deal that President Biden and then stpaoerbg mccarthy struck, the Pandemic Relief Program for student len borrowers ended as part of that deal. So this month 28 million federal student loan borrowers will receive bills if they have not already and be required to pay for the first time. So those borrowers, there are various relief parameters programs available if they are having trouble repaying including what the administration is promoting sort of at the top of the list which is the new save plan, an income driven repayment plan to lower payments for borrowers. Host saving on a valuable education plan. The save plan as you just said. A few more details about that. Raises the amount of income shielded from repayment calculation from 150 to 225 of the l poverty line. Capped payments for undergraduate honest to 5 o income and wapblg interest accrual that exceeds Monthly Payment and loanorveness after 10 years worth for anybody that borrowed 12,000 or less. I want to show our viewers what the president had to say yesterday on these incremental steps hes been making. In total my administration canceled 127 billion in student debts for nearly 3. 6 million americans. This is life changing for individuals and families. But it is good for our economy as a whole. I have freed millions of americans of the burden of student debt. That means they can get their lives in order and think of buying a house and start a business and start a family. This matters. It matters to their daily lives. Host the Supreme Court overturned his first original didnt cancellation plan. How has he been able to do this . Guest it is a little confusing because there was that big Supreme Court ruling earlier this summer that a lot of student loan borrowers were waiting for and didnt go the way many of them had hoped. The Supreme Court ruled that the president s first Student Debt Relief program, which had been tied to the pandemic or the pandemic was a justification, feels illegal. That the president exceeded his authority. What the administration had been doing from the beginning is to work on different buckets of Student Debt Relief. I mentioned the targeted segment of borrowers who work in Public Service, borrowers who develop severe and permanent disabilities, borrowers who have been paying a long time but havent been able to pay off their loans after decades. They have also forgiven a lot of debt on a separate Program Designed to discharge loans when the Education Department finds that a college has engaged in some misconduct so it misled students two enrolling at their institution or cheated them in some way. That is known as the borrower defense. The administration has forgiven billions understood that program. So the strategy from the beginning has been to work on individual relief programs that are tied to existing programs, arent a new Sweeping Program like the one that the Supreme Court struck down. At the same time, the administration said it is not giving up on broad based deb cancellation. It is moving through a new regulatory process trying to use a different law than the emergency pandemic related authority the Supreme Court disapproved of. That process is moving along and slow and part of the regulatory process of the Education Department needs to go through public hearings, forming a committee to hammer out the details of the proposals. That committee is meeting for the further next week. But that will be a long process and the administration expects it will take months, potentially up to a year to finalize new broad based didnt relief programs. Host sid from burtonsville, maryland. Caller well, i got charged 1,030 in the last few days. Im in my third year of medical school and they just took it out of my account and i am i did send them the proof of being in medical school and now im trying to reach them and like i have to wait two hours and my call is disconnected. In medical school you cannot work, you just have to study all the time. But now, like i do side gigs just like i now have to call them and see if they can return that money because if you are still in school you should noting charged for it and i sent them the proof like two weeks ago and they still charged me more than 1,000. Guest the twohour call time the caller mentioned is something we are hearing a lot from student loan borrowers as they prepare to make payments this month for the further since the beginning of the pandemic. The Education Department do not directly collect student left hand didnt. It contracts to a handful of left hand servicers, the management of Student Loans, and we are turning on the student loan system all at once. It is unprecedented that is happening. At the same time everyone is paying for the first time in the same month and to put it mildly there are some kinks in the system. Borrowers are facing long hold times, some long processing times for paperwork and applications to manage their Student Loans. In some cases, that is because honor servicers have will to quickly staff up to meet the demands and they are getting paid less than they were before the pandemic. That is part of the budget cuts the Education Department will to make to the Loan Servicing contracts because the administration didnt get the funding it requested from Congress Last year. And that funding over student Loan Servicing contends to be a situation. Host in houston you paid the Student Loans off we . Ask caller my husband paid them off. He was in medical school from 1965 to 1969. We borrowed, we were married and we borrowed almost 10,000 at the time it go to medical school. The first house we bought cost 18,000 to give you an example of how expensive that medical education was at that time. The first car we owned cost about 2,000. These people need to pay these loans back and need to be smart when they borrow the money. That was the idea that they are going to pay the loans back. As far as this station this is another attempt to buy from young people. You need to pay the loan back. Host Michael Stratford. Guest i think that caller is articulating where a lot of republicans are on the president s Student Debt Relief agenda. Republicans to a tee oppose the administration wiping out large amounts of debt across the board for borrowers and in many cases republicans are pushing back against these targeted debt relief programs the administration is power suing. Republicans argue like the caller did that borrowers should have to repay their debt, that it is not fair for taxpayers to bear the burden of wipe clear the debts. And others are making other republicans are making the argument that they skew the incentives for colleges and universities and will continue to raise prices as a result of the debt relief. My wife owns 40,000 but i want to say that last caller they had it easy. 10,000 to go to medical school that is a joke. And a house for 18,000 those baby boomers you had it easy. Life is way different now. You are skewed. I do have honest and i pay them off religiously. I graduated in 2012 and never been late, i paid 300 a month before covid then it stopped because of covid. I was saving to get a house and now we ramp up. So lets do the Savings Program. I did it online. I had to pay 600 now with the Savings Program because they go after your 2022i. R. S. Taxes. The timing is awful. So i called. I waited and waited. I talked to they are very nice. I talked to somebody and they helped me lower it to 97. From 600 to 97. October turns on guess how much they take out of my account. 600. They are not ready for this. The house, senate, should have passed this. The state program in the save program in general is the least expensive option for borrowers but it is not the least expensive option for every borrower. So some will want to check on student aid. The caller also mentioned what sounds like a serious error that a loan servicer or the government was making with their loan and in throws cases borrowers have options to seek some recourse. I guess my question is clearly it looks like the Student Loan Program isnt working for a lot of people. My question is why isnt there an effort to reform it . This idea of simply trying to pay off people who are behind and ican sympathize with their position but it doesnt seem to have Financial Education and ask the callers what did you major in . Did you think of how much you would make after you got out and stuff like that. It seems like i really dont see any significant proposals by the administration to actually form it and if you are trying to forgive it, it would suggest theres a problem if the premise of you go to school, you make more money and pay back the loan from that, isnt working and something is wrong. And is there any effort to get the educational institutions to kick in some money . These administrators, some of them make well into seven figures. It seems bizarre that theres this launch problem but we are not fully addressing fundamental issues associated with it. Thank you so much. Host Michael Stratford. Guest one criticism leveled at the administration often that Student Debt Relief is a bandaid on a bigger problem which is the rising cost of college. One thing the administration has done to contain the cost of college or make sure students graduate programs that provide good value is a regulation the administration finalized the gainful employment rule. And that requires Career College programs, so most programs and vocational programs it meet certain metrics to continue to receive aid and be eligible for students to take out honest, federal Student Loans, to go to their programs. It also requires new transparency Disclosure Requirements which the Administration Says it hopes it will help borrowers become better consumers and shop around for a good value when they are selecting a college program. For the first time those disclosures will be made to graduate student borrowers at all types of institutions, nonprofit, public and for profit and the administration hopes that transparency will help students choose the best option and hopefully will allow them to get in a career that is going to help pay off loans. I want to everyone knows that bidens program is not enough for the worst hurt borrowers like myself. That the department of education closed my school for fraud and im on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars from a school with a bad reputation. I dont trust the department of education to do the right thing. They sent me a letter that they have until the year 2040 to process my application while interest still accrues. What im waiting for is either party to restore bankruptcy rights. It was in the d. N. C. Party platform and they had a chance to pass a bill 2598 last year and they broke that promise. Host lets take that point about bankruptcy and Student Loans. Michael stratford. Guest it is exceedingly difficult for student loan borrowers to get their debts discharged in bankruptcy. The standard for being able to have your lens discharged in bankruptcy proceeding is were higher on Student Loans than other types of debt lake credit card debt. The Biden Administration has said it would support changes to the law that would make that process easier for student loan borrowers in bankruptcy. It made the Administrative Changes to at least not challenge borrowers in court when they are trying to get their debt canceled in some cases. But it would require congress to change the law to change the standard for student loan discharges in bankruptcy. Host we will go to new york. Caller good morning. My thought on this is with senator Sanders America is supposed to be the richest country in the world. How come we cant give our people a College Education and have them for maybe three years after the graduation to in some form or another give back to the community in some way or another . They give free tuition and he promised if anyone from the United States wanted to go to his country and become a doctor they could come back to america and go into community and for three years do some volunteer free work in support of getting the free education. Senator feinstein, that is her official title. It is how californians and people all over the world knew her. But to us, to san franciscans, she was mayor Dianne Feinstein. I was 13 years old when i first met the mayor. Over the years we had become mayor feinstein fans. Whenever there was an important event or activity, she chose us to perform. We played at city hall and at the super bowl celebrations, we proudly wore our mayor feinstein took the time to talk to us, to tell us how amazing we were, and to remind us that we were her band. I was born in the early 1970s. Thank you, mayor feinstein for i was born in the early 1970s, as a kid, as far as erar knew,dieins was the mayor. For my age, we always accepted that a woman could be in charge, that a woman could do whatever a man can do. We believe that, consider it normal. My mothers generation did not my grown blissfully free that the yolks of the yolks our grandmothers war because Dianne Feinstein wrestled them off, because she showed the way, she created a world where girls like me could be taught to lead. When i became mayor, even before that, when i was a member of the board of supervisors, senator feinstein was always there to offer guidance. A a few years ago when i was president of the board of supervisors we had a large ceremony in the board chamber. Senator feinstein, as former mayor joined me up on the dais. As each dignitary, our past supervisor walked in, she whispered notes to me, that supervisor lives in , ask him about his gardening. [laughter] when the pandemic hit, senator feinstein reached out to me. She talked to me about the hard decisions that needed to be made. She told me to focus on doing the right thing, to do what is necessary for the city. Senator feinstein was always focused on the nuts and bolts, the things that San Francisco needed. I valued her advice. I will miss her of course. It was her words that meant the most when i became the second woman to be mayor of the city in the wake of tragedy. It was her advice on how to heal and lead, that gave me strength. But i dont know if she recognized that none of the things she told me as an adult wherever as important were ever as important as what she showed us as children. Through the times of tragedy and triumph, Dianne Feinstein showed us the meaning of San Franciscos model motto gold, peace, iron and or. She showed us a world where women lead and lift each other up so girls like me could follow in her footsteps. She showed us strength and grace, courage, and collaboration. Like the old saying goes, you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. Dianne feinstein did it right. She was our mayor, our champion, she was the leader of our band. I know i speak for all san franciscans when i say she will truly be missed. Now i would like to introduce rabbi singer. [applause] in our jewish tradition, we call senator feinstein as an american that is an american amen. In hebrew, we called her a women woman of valor. As we mourn this loving mother, grandmother, friend, true woman of valor. Let us be comforted by the words we have in common, the words of the 23rd song. It reminds us how the senator, this amazing leader lived. She brought comfort to so many in the city, as we faced some of our deepest challenges. She feared no people, as she courageously pursue justice, as a leader in the senate. And she gave us hope that we americans can always be inspired by the values of democracy, even as we walk at times through the valley of the shadow. Many of us are collectors of diannes work. And a passionate leader, simply put, she was a force. To many of you, she was supervisor, mayor, senator, and then chairman. She was recognized around the world as a leader, a standardbearer of america and of american values. Yet, of course, to catherine and eileen she held the most important titles of all, mother and grandmother. So to catherine and eileen and rick, and to the entire family, my prayers are with you. I dont have to tell you that it is not easy. It is not easy when a loved one lives a life of Public Service, especially a person as hardworking and selfless as Dianne Feinstein. So to you, the family, we think you thank you, all the sacrifices you have knowingly and unknowingly made over the years that allowed her to serve. On behalf of the people of the United States, we are grateful to you. As a Public Servant, dianne had the courage to take on the many tough fights. Even when she was faced with fierce opposition and political peril. Especially, when her work was in defense of the constitution and the security of the american people. Dianne commanded respect and she gave respect. She was a serious and gracious person who welcomed debate and discussions, but also required that it would be well informed and studied. I believe that this city where she started had a lot to do with that. I will let you in on a wellknown secret, San Francisco politics is roughandtumble. Some even say a bareknuckled sport. This city requires its elected officials to engage on a daily basis in complex discussions with informed constituents who will raise the most intricate of local issues, no matter if you are walking through the presidio or attending an event at delancey street. In this environment, guided diannes style of leadership, even after she reached the heights of national and global power. Dianne diligently focused on the impact to real people. Ideology, substance, results, not rhetoric. When i was sworn into the senate in 2017, it was dianne who welcomed me. She invited me to her senate hideaway. There, with one hand, she presented me with a glass of california chardonnay, and with the other hand a binder full of her draft bills. True to her mayoral roots, she was deeply immersed in the details of each bill and how each would play on the streets of our beloved state. Some of my fondest, recent memories of dianne are of our time together in a secure meeting room in the United States senate. Every week, members of the Senate Intelligence committee, would walk into that woodpaneled room, no cameras, no public, no devices. Senators of both parties who would take off their jackets and literally roll up their sleeves, putting aside partisanship to discuss what was in the best interest of our national security. There, we would resume classified materials and receive updates from the heads of the cia, our intelligence community, and the United States military. And god for bid if one of them gave a answer. Dianne would pause, lift up her memo, glanced knowingly at the others of us on the dais and question the witness in a way this former prosecutor always admired. In that room, there was give and take, debate, and problem solving. And that was quintessential of dianne at her best. So as i close, allow me to turn back the clock, 30 years, to tuesday november 3, 1992. I was a young prosecutor at the Alameda County district attorneys office. On that evening, i left my home in oakland, got in my toyota corolla, and drove across the bay bridge to the city. I pulled into the Fairmont Hotel and i walked up to a huge and pa cked ballroom. There on stage stood dianne and barbara boxer, hands raised in what the nation would name the the year of the woman. We celebrated an historic seat. We were the first state to elect two female senators. That night we celebrated dianne, who, the next day would take office as the first female senator ever for the great state of california. Fast forward to today, when i again travelled to the city to celebrate diane dianne, this time on washington dc from air force to. Dianne, the women of america have come a long way, our country has come a long way, and you helped move the ball forward and our nation salutes you, dianne. [applause] mayor breed please welcome the Senate Majority leader of the United States senate, charles schumer. [applause] sen. Schumer thank you mayor, Vice President harris, mayor breed, rabbi, cantor, all of diannes family, my many colleagues who have come here, and friends. There is a story of dianne that i thought was quintessentially her. Some of us might remember that years ago, senator feinstein injured her ankle while on a morning walk in lake tahoe. Most people might go see a doctor. Focused on recovery. But dianne, forget it. It was the week of the lake tahoe summit, a signature event of hers, one she inaugurated in 1997 with harry reid, convening leaders from california nevada, public sector, the private sector, all for a cause near and dear to her heart, preserving lake tahoe for future generations. Years later, she will look back on that morning and remember hearing a bone pop, but chose to finish her day before even thinking about treatment. It turns out it was a pretty significant fracture. Ask how she got through the day, she only offered three words, i just did. [laughter] now there are many adjectives that rightly describe Dianne Feinstein. Strong, unflappable, winning, fierce, practical, earnest. One quality above all stands out in my mind and will forever set dianne apart. Integrity. Integrity. Dianne feinstein was a leader of uncommon integrity. She had an internal gyroscope that propelled her, motivated her, never let her stray from a cause she knew was right. I have to be unflappable right now. [laughter] when she embraced an issue, she pursued it until the end. No matter the consequences. No matter what others thought. Her integrity made her sparkle like a diamond in the senate. I was dazzled by that internal gyroscope for the first time in 1994, when i closely worked with dianne as the author of the house version of the assault weapon ban which dianne champion in the senate. She worked to the bell harder than anyone i see ive seen worked a bill, thinking of every pitfall, resisting every broadside from the nra, because she knew her cause to be just from her own experience. Thanks to her dedication, her unflappable at, her trademark unflappability, her trademark, america made a new leap in gun safety. Working on the assault weapon ban was one of my proudest times in office. I not only called dianne a colleague, but a close friend. What a loving, caring friend she was. When my daughter first moved to San Francisco out of college, in september i got a call from dianne. She asked me, does your daughter have anywhere to go, with a High Holy Day Services . I said no. She said, well she is going to services with me. There were so many qualities of this amazingly multifaceted woman that i will miss. I will miss her ability to win doubters and detractors. There were many. Not by putting them down, but with her elegance, her poise, and her piercing wit. I will miss her sheer dedication and thoroughness. She was better prepared and better informed than just about anybody else. I cannot tell you how many times dianne would consider a topic and say, let me go home and read on it first. She would always come back, 40 or 50, 60 questions the next day. I will miss diannes talent as one of the senates great dealmakers. If there was the smallest bit of Common Ground she would pursue it. If it meant moving an issue forward. Even while being so far ahead of her time on gun safety, marriage equality, womens rights, the environment, and so many other issues, she was never afraid of working with those she disagreed with whenever the opportunity arose. Dianne feinstein was the living body meant of what the senate should always be embodiment meant of what the senate should always be, built on cooperation. I will always be indebted to diane dianne not just as a colleague, but as a father of two daughters. Because of dianne, my daughters grew up in a world that is a bit fairer, a little more just, and more accepting of women in leadership. Speaking at stanfords commencement in 1993, dianne confessed that she never socked to be the first sought to be the first woman in this role for that role. She said what mattered was to live life to the fullest and advised the graduates to be able to accept challenge to take risks, but always protect your integrity and that is just what she did throughout her entire career. So today we grieve. Today we mourn immense loss for the senate, for california, for america. But we also give thanks. Thanks that someone so rarefied, so dedicated, and with a sparkling diamond like presence served our country so well for so many wonderful years. Our country, california, and my hometown of San Francisco has lost a great Public Servant put more important to me i have lost a friend of more than 50 years. She was a force to be reckoned with when it mattered most and she showed up for you when the chips were down. She saved San Francisco during its darkest hours and showed political courage during times when no one else did as a United States senator. She had and i loved her for it. My heart goes out to her family, especially her daughter, catherine and her granddaughter eileen, rest and power my friend, from john, the former congressman and former chairman of the Democratic Party in california. Draped in the american flag, your beautiful landing in the arms of the first responders, lifting you up, catherine, rick and eileen on saturday. Over the weekend your beloved 49ers and the great San Francisco giants pay tribute to you at their game paid tribute to other game. Mayor breed received you triumphantly back in city hall where you will lie in state, and we were welcomed home by the people of San Francisco with music and song. Thousands of people came to pay their respects in lines down blocks all day long. The family had tos had to extend the time to pay their respects. This week it was announced that the blue angels, the week would be dedicated to you. Fleet week. Listen to this, the blue angels will be piloting a missing woman formation, honoring Dianne Feinstein. [applause] she flew with them. People crying, teams cheering, ship sailing, blue angels flying, all honoring dianne, a woman so strategic and strong, a lady so gentle, a trailblazing model, and a mentor of generosity and sweetness. Here they come again. While they are coming, lets recognize the members of congress who are here, the house and the senate. Please stand, so we can recognize you all. [applause] so many. [applause] thank you. You know from the most vulnerable in our midst, to the most powerful persons in the world, dianne regarded everyone with respect. Thank you kathleen catherine, rick and eileen for sharing dianne with us. We all smile when thinking of dianne going to her first civic engagement. With catherine in a stroller. Then, years later, its what dianne wants, that is what we get. Years later, with eileen who dianne called noodle in her arms. Catherine in the stroller and noodle in her arms, blue angels in the sky. Dianne grew strength from you, catherine, noodle and rick. We all drew strength from her. I hope it is a comfort to you that so many people mourn your loss and are praying for you at this sad time. Dianne they asked me to talk personally about dianne, us being neighbors, and politically in the same arena. Dianne love cultivating people and flowers loved cultivating people and flowers. She would bring people together, officially, personally, and romantically. Dianne was a matchmaker. Now some of you know that. You are here, jerry brown. [laughter] george, the list goes on. Last week my daughter nancy was toasting dianne and she said, thank you dianne for allowing us to be present in your happy place. Dianne considers her happy place where she challenged us all. This was at the beginning of last week. Little did we know. Dianne cultivated people. She was loyal to hundreds of commissioners, appointees and staff, many of whom are here today. Lets hear it from you, all of you. [applause] i have a tshirt that i want to show you. It says, many of you have warned this, it says i survived dianne s staff meeting. [laughter] dianne loved flowers, to grow them, to show them, to paint them and share them, in drawings and on mugs. Anyone here have a dianne mug . As neighbors, paul and i always knew, we could see from our window, that dianne had the most fabulous hydrangeas. As neighbors and friends, dianne took pride in working together for california and for our values. I will always remember this one time in 2015, in the United States capital, dianne and i expressed our concern to president xi about the chinese governments abuses of the tibetans and disrespect for the dalai lama. When dianne spoke, people listened. People have asked me what is the best advice i ever received from dianne. Well, we have all gotten great advice, but the most constant advice i ever got from her, again and again, was, nancy, you dont always have to be the one going out on the attack. Let some other people do that from time to time. Why dont you do that . [laughter] madam Vice President , thank you so much for honoring us with your presence today and honoring dianne. You are a good friend. Again, your official associate, it is an honor that you are here. Leader schumer, you have spoken so beautifully about dianne, our senators accomplishments. Thank you, thank you for your beautiful remarks the morning of her passing and all that you have done since then to honor her memory. She has a lasting legacy, from the cable cars, the Breast Cancer stance, to the assault weapons ban, the list goes on and on. From the u. S. Capitol back to San Francisco, where Dianne Feinstein is our forever mayor. Dianne was such a commanding mayor for 10 powerful years that when her term was up, and some of the people started to run for mayor, including some men, schoolchildren were so you, can a were saying, can a man be mayor of San Francisco . [laughter] dianne left us as she had lived, on her own terms. She was proud to confirm more than 145 biden judges. [applause] she walks on walked onto the floor last thursday, which would be her last day, she walked on the floor and voted to advance legislation to keep governments open government open for the people. [applause] this is just the beginning. Fleet week dedicated to dianne. Flyovers all weekend. She would like it like that. The president began his beautiful tribute earlier in the program with a poem by emerson. I will end with a psalm suggested by nancy, the american anthem. Doesnt it sound like dianne. I believed in sharing the blessings i received. Let me know in my heart when my days are through, america, america i did my best for you. Dianne feinstein. I told the blue angels, just two times, but now they are giving us more energy. We are excited and grateful for the senators legacy. We know they loved her as well. So, at this time i would like to welcome, for the final remarks of the day, senator Dianne Feinsteins granddaughter, eileen mariano. [applause] ms. Mariano thank you, mayor breed. Thank you to everyone in the audience for making the journey out here today and for braving the heat. Its honor to my grandmotheran an honor to my grandmother. My grandmother would be remembered by those in San Francisco, california, and the United States for so many reasons. A number of which have already been mentioned today. For san franciscans, senator feinstein guided the city through tragedy, saved our beloved cable cars, created the iconic peer 39 pier 39 and fought for the Lgbtq Community during the height of the hiv aids epidemic. For californians, senator feinstein established joshua tree and death valley. [applause] for the Beautiful Lake tahoe, modernized californias water system and protected californias deserts. [applause] for those across the country, senator feinstein will be remembered for banning assault weapons. [applause] creating lifesaving amber alerts and rooting out and banning torture. [applause] she will also be remembered across the country for shattering the glass ceiling. She showed young women everywhere that they, 2 they too can be leaders, and that they deserve a seat at the table. [applause] but to me, she will be remembered as the most incredible grandmother. Minutes after i was born, at the hospital, she exclaimed to my mom and dad, oh wow, she looks just like me. [laughter] you should change her name to dianne. From then on, she and i were extremely close. We had an effortless connection. When i was a toddler, we could amuse ourselves for hours playing hide and seek. I would laugh and laugh when she would find me hiding. I would spend nights at my grandmothers house whenever she was home and sent cisco in San Francisco. She taught me how to play chess, even though she hated losing. We would pick flowers from her garden and draw them together. Only her drawings were worth making a difference. She would give me haircuts at home in the kitchen, much to my parents dismay, because my hair always turned out crooked. She loved teaching about San Franciscos history. Why there are bricks instead of asphalt on some of our citys steepest hills, what it used to look like before the fire, and the best places in the city to view the bay. At the end of the day, we would curl up, both on the couch, and watch a movie, or our favorite tv show. When it was time to go to sleep, she would say good night and she would always sing me the song you are my sunshine. My grandmother was my biggest cheerleader. She was an unwavering support system. She never failed to tell me how proud she was of me. I could bring to her any worry or fear and she always had a good solution. She was a constant and unyielding source of love. As i got older, she started sharing more of her infinite wisdom. She taught me lessons i will carry with me forever. Work to your long suit, she would say. Do something you can do for your entire life, something that energizes you, something that inspires you, and something that makes the world a better place for the people who live in it. Boy, did my grandmother do that. Earn your spurs, she said. You have to work hard, put in the hours, and work your way up. My grandmother did that too. It does not matter how many times you lose, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep going, no matter what. That, and she would also say to me, if you ever go out of town, no matter where you are going, it doesnt matter if you are going to a city or the desert, or a beach, or the mountains, always pack a black pantsuit. [laughter] there is no occasion to which you cant wear a black pantsuit. [laughter] to my grandmother, i promise to always work to my long suit, to earn my spurs, to keep going no matter what, and to never forget my black pantsuit. Your family loves you. We are so proud of you. We miss you and you will always, always be my sunshine. [applause] mayor breed thank you, eileen, thank you catherine, thank you to the entire family, so many of the staff, colleagues, in the senate, people who have come far and wide, thank you to all of San Francisco for your love and support of senator feinstein and her family at this time. Her legacy will continue to live on in everything we do to continue to lead the city and to lead this country. This has been an extraordinary service. We appreciate, especially our Vice President for being here to represent our country, to demonstrate the importance of what senator feinstein means, not just a San Francisco and california, but the entire country. Its so meaningful to be here with each and every one of you, so many elected leaders and legends, and people who help lead the city for many generations. You are all in our hearts and prayers, as we continue to mourn senator feinstein. But she will always be remembered in so many corners of the city and in so many corners of the state, and in corners of the country.
