What the think about this . Should all states have less mandates . Should no state have mask mandates and risk more infections . Do you support or oppose must mandates . We will open up our regular lines. That means democrats, we want to hear from you at 2027488000. Beublicans, your line will 2027488001. Independents we want to hear from you at 2027488002. You can always text us at 2027488003, and were always reading on social media, on cspanwj, and on facebook at facebook. Com cspan. Once again, the novel to bevirus is said hitting its second or third wave in the United States as more people are coming down with the disease. We are seeing around the country different states doing Different Things when it comes to the coronavirus. Aarp, now according to there are 34 states and the District Of Columbia who are mandating Face Coverings in public. We want to know whether you actually support this. We want to hear from you on this issue. We are going to go straight to our phone lines. E, who isk to ann calling from jamaica, new york on the democrat line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. I believe in wearing a mask. I live in an apartment building. I dont even go to my incident in a room unless i have a mask to my incident incinerator room unless i have a mask. New york city where i live had a very high death rate, and it is totally to me ignorant of people not to wear a mask. It is not political, it is just common sense. Host according to aarp, new york has had a mask requirement since april 17. Billion remember when you started wearing a mask . Did you start wearing it in april, or did it take a little time for you to catch on . Caller and of march i started wearing a mask at the end of march. Host do you see most of your neighbors Wearing Masks, or do you see people out in new york city without their masks . Caller icf you people without seemost of the people i a few people without a mask, but most people around me where their masks. Host john is calling on the independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Yes, i believe we need to have a mask mandate. Host why . Caller because without it, we will not be able to curb this virus and control it. Host you will hear a lot of people say that they have the right to not wear a mask. What do you think about that . Caller i think they are crazy. They are antiintellectual. That is all that is. Just like their president. That is all that is. It is common sense. It is science. Lets go to samuel who is calling from pennsylvania on the republican line. Samuel, good morning. Caller good morning. Host go ahead. Caller yes, i think that where we have the most problem of the virus going around, they should wear a mask, not all the time, but in the states that have the most problem. Some people are already taking cautions about their parents and everything, disinfecting and theything, so i think that should mandatory that everyone should wear a mask that soy thing that they shouldnt mandatory that so i think that we shouldnt mandatory that everyone were mask. Host pennsylvania has a mask mandate that the again on july 1. You wait for the mandate or were you wearing a mask beforehand . Caller i was wearing it beforehand due to my parents who are pretty hold. Common sense will tell you that, to self distance from people that you love. That is what i did ahead of time. Kept my children and stuff away from those two due to the spread of it. Host right now, it is thanksgiving. Are you going to be a much have any type of thanksgiving celebration or will coronavirus keep you from going to see your loved ones . Caller i figure this way, as long as we keep the self distance from the table, six feet apart and everything, than i think it would be a good idea. But we are thinking about having it outside. Bet, told be the best curb the spread of it. You know what i mean . To stay the distance away from each other. I think that is the best bet. But shutting us down, you know what i mean, the states down, is not going to be little work because people, i know now there is elderly people now who cant even survive what the shutdown would be for. Host do you think there should be a National Mask mandate . Caller i dont think so, i dont think that is a good idea because it is unconstitutional. Everybody has a right to do what they feel. It is under the constitution. To tell someone what they should do. That is how i feel. President elect joe biden on monday came out to talk about what he thinks americans should do when it comes to protecting themselves from the novel coronavirus. Heres what he said. [video clip] pres. Biden i will not the president until january 20, but my message today to everyone is this, it doesnt matter who you voted for, where you stood before election day, it doesnt matter europe party, your point of view it doesnt matter your party or your point of view, we can save tens of thousands of lives if everyone just wears a mask for the next few months. Not democrat or republican lives, american lives. Maybe it would save the life of a person who shops at your local grocery store. Maybe it saves the life of a member of your place of worship. Maybe it saves the life of one of your childrens teachers. Maybe it saves your life. So please, i implore you, wear a mask. Do it for yourself. Do it for your neighbor. A mask is not a political statement, but it is a good way to start pulling the country together. I want to be very clear, the goal of maskwearing is not to make your life less comfortable, it is to take something or to take something away from you, it is to give Something Back to all of us, a normal life. The goal is to get back to normal as fast as possible, and masks are critical in doing that. It wont be forever, but that is how we will get our nation back, back up to speed economically, so we can go back to celebrating birth days and holidays together. So we can attend sporting events together. So we can get back to the lives and connections we shared before the pandemic. It doesnt matter whether or not we agree with one another. It doesnt matter who you voted for. We are americans and our country is under threat. Host lets go to some of our social media followers and see what they have to say about the idea of mask mandates. Here is one post from facebook that says, the democrats never meet a tragedy they didnt like. They found another opportunity to change public behavior. Here is one tweet that says my spouse is an icu nurse, they say wear a mask, wash hands and social distance. This should be mandatory for everyone and we can whip this little bug. Another tweet says, start being selfish, wear a mask for your safety. Another one says, 240,000 that from covid19. How many did not wear a mask or social distance . It is no different from wearing a seatbelt or shoes when going to the store. Save lives. Another tweet says, i have doubts on Wearing Masks. More and more people wear masks but the increase of cases is skyrocketing. Maybe masks are a big mistake. And another post from Facebook Says opposed. We should all wear masks on our own accord. Government has no place in forcing you to do so. A quick look at a story that was in usa today talking about what president elect biden would and could do when it comes to the National Mask mandate. On the campaign trail, biden said he wouldnt and couldnt issue in National Mandate that everyone must wear a mask or in fine, quote National Mandate is not possible because Public Health powers belong to the state, not the government. Said the director of Georgetown Universitys institute for national and Global Health law. The federal government could not implement its own mask mandates nor could it force the states to do it. Instead, biden said in a town hall last month, that he would appeal to governors and mayors to enact mask mandates. You can go to every governor and get them in the room, all 50 of them as president and say, ask people to wear a mask. Everyone knows they work biden said. Lets go to. The phone lines and see what you think lets go to chester calling from new orleans, louisiana on the democratic line. Chester, good morning. Caller good morning. I firmly believe that it should have been mandatory across the United States since memorial day or march. Things would have been much different in my opinion. Its a nobrainer. Everybody should wear a mask across the board. That in louisiana, it says they have extended the public Face Covering through at least december 4. Since has been in place july 11. How many people do you see in louisiana actually wearing Face Coverings or masks . Caller i have a report from a medical person, that works in in august, shend told me that she was disappointed to see the people out and about without masks. It is tragic. Masks Firm Believer that from the very beginning, as soon as you got the information. Host here is a question that a lot of people are betting backandforth, should there be a fine for not wearing a mask, for ignoring the mask mandates . Should there be a fine or punishment for doing that . Caller to some level, yes. Suggest,t would you what do you think would make people wear a mask . What type of punishment . Caller consider the consequences of not wearing a mask. It is deadly. There is no in between. I cant give you a definite penalty or fine or anything, but there should be some consequences. Host lets go to brian calling from San Diego California on the independent line. Brian, good morning. Caller good morning. So, i live in a state and a city that requires there is a mask mandate, and i am for it, problem is there is no way to enforce it. When you go into a store, you have a majority of people wearing it. But out in public, Walking Around, you see i would say 60 that do. And when they do, half the time it is only covering their mouth, not their nose. If you are going to have a National Mask mandate, who is going to enforce it . Host so how do you enforce is there any way it can be enforced . Caller i was thinking of this when i was waiting on hold, maybe if you had a neighborhood watch. People in your Community Volunteer to sit on the corner and just remind people to wear a k, maybe that would because there is definitely not enough police to drive around and give everybody a ticket for not wearing a mask. I dont see that happening. Host do you think there should be a fine for not wearing a mask . Caller sure. I dont think necessarily would help, but, yeah. Because if it is not being enforced, why would anybody care . Host you suggest Police Officers giving tickets . They certainly like to put tickets on cars, do you think Police Officers should be tasked with giving tickets to people caught outside not Wearing Masks in crowded conditions . Caller yes. They have already done that in a each 72 here in a Beach Community here. They had the sheriffs come out and do that. I dont know if it worked or not. Is there enough police to do that . If there is, then i think it is great, if they can afford it. Oft in tennessee, the mayor tennessee puty, out a statement that talk a little bit about why that talked a little bit about why they dont have a mask mandate. I want you to see what the mayor said about mask mandates i have imposed a mask mandate on Cheatham County residents i have not imposed a mask mandate on the residents for the simple fact that there is no way to enforce it. I would be expected, and rightly so, someone calling to report someone without a mask in public and asking what is the mayor intend to do about it . The reality is there is nothing that can be done to enforce a mandatep citizens would be under th. Security of penalties for those who do not follow a mask mandate. We would like to thank fox 17 news in nashville for bringing us. To that brings up the question, if there is a mask mandate how do you enforce it . Tickets . Fines . Public shaming . What do you think. Lets go to gary on the republican line. Caller i think it should just. E voluntary, Wearing Masks the people know the pros and cons of wearing a mask. Now, and ifby they dont, that is just too bad for them. Usually the people that dont wear a mask, they have the attitude that rules are made to be broken. If the speed limit is 75 they will drive 85. The virusp getting and dying, that is just more Social Security for the rest of us. Thank you. Host gary, if you are still there, i see that north dakota has no statewide mask mandate. Are you seeing a lot of people north dakota choosing to wear a mask or not to wear a mask . Caller i would say many more than twong masks now months ago when the attitude was, well, there is nothing here, why should we wear a mask . But there is more wearing a mask now. But again, it depends on the attitude of the person. If the attitude of the person is, a, rules are made to be broken, they are not going to wear a mask. So you get the coronavirus and i. I am not going to miss them so you get the coronavirus and die. I am not going to miss them. Host looking at the numbers of coronavirus right now we are seeing big spikes in a lot of states including north dakota, where the number of cases seems to have gone up quite a bit in that state. Of course i havent even asked you this question, gary, do you wear a mask, and do you see people in your area Wearing Masks . And are you worried when people dont . Caller i wear a mask because i have cancer and i am getting chemotherapy, so i have a low white blood cell count, so i wear a mask. I distance. When i go to the grocery store, i try to go when there are less people there. I dont go in restaurants. I dont go to bars. I dont go to church. I just visit relatives. But if i go outside, yes, i will take the mask off because north dakota is a sparsely populated state, you are not going to you go for a walk, evening jim stone here, chances are you will not run it to anybody. But if you meet anybody, put the mask back on. Host lets go to vanessa from georgia on the democratic line. Vanessa, good morning. Caller good morning. Most them go ahead. Er host go ahead. Caller , vanessa the question should there be a mask mandate, i think it should be determined by individual states, but equally important to me should be that handwashing is stressed. I think people would be more open to the concept of washing your hands because that is one of the ways, the biggest ways that covid is contracted. Host i think that a good way of policing would be to actually hold the merchants and that is accountable for allowing people to enter those institutions without masks. Oft would be a better way policing who is Wearing Masks and who is not wearing a mask. That is my opinion. Host how do you enforce it . Your suggestion is to put the businesses, make the businesses liable. To you enforce this with police . Do you enforce this with public shaming . How do you get people to wear a mask if you require people to wear a mask, how do you get them to do it . People watching people would be a great way of enforcing it. Say, if i go into an institution and i observe a large majority of people without masks then there should be a hotline that i can call and make it known to officials that this facility is not enforcing the mask mandate, and maybe there should be a penalty. Host does the place where you work, vanessa, does it require you to wear a mask at work . Caller it does not, and the reason being is that there is a plant downstairs. They have to wear masks in the plant automatically because the materials they work with but i am the on the one in my office, so i dont have the anyone. To spread it to [inaudible] true negative impacts of the mask. And the fact that they are not as effective. I could wear them all the time. People are wearing them below their nose, below their chain, they put them in their pockets. It is false to think that masks are the solution here. So i totally oppose it. We are adults. This is a free society. You have the right to make a choice. If you want to wear a mask, e. Erwear on if you are concerned about the virus you shouldnt go to areas, where you think you might be at risk. We are supposed to be a free society but we are not doing that. I could talk for one hour on this. Subject because i have done so much research. I wish you guys would have americas frontline doctors on to talk about it, because they would give you a different perspective than the onesided wa reporting. We are getting incomplete reporting. Host so how exactly do we stop the spread of the virus which seems to be increasing and getting even more deadly as the year goes on . Caller there is so much misreporting. They are talking about a spike right now. We have also entered the flu season. If you check and see what the cdc has been doing, including the w. H. O. , they have comingled the influenza, the pneumonia and covid. We dont really know what is what. It is a mess of facts. Go to the cdc site and read it. It is out there. Here in florida, where i am, orange county, they said a guy killed in a motorcycle would die from covid. There is so much bogus reporting. We need the truth on what this thing is. Before covid, everybody should have been washing their hands. We shouldnt be sneezing and coughing in someones face. Lets be realistic. Lets talk about what is really going on here. This virus is not what they are saying it is. We need to be honest. The truth is our best weapon. Host my assumption is you are not wearing a mask yourself . Eyewear one when i have to going to certain stores. Only if it is essential that i have to go someplace, then i wear a mask. Host when is it essential just so i am clear when do you consider it essential to have a mask on . Caller if i am going into a intors office, by wear it there because they require it. Individual facilities require masks. That is when i wear them. And i dont go into regular stores anymore. I dont have to walmart or bed bath beyond. If they want to enforce such a silly rule, and it is silly, it is bogus. Worldwide, we can prove that nothing. Host so you are boycotting stores that require you to wear masks to come inside . Caller i dont go to those stores. If i dont support what they are doing, i dont believe in it, i dont go in it. I dont have to go in bed bath beyond. At some point if they decide it will get back to what the normal is people had influenza before. There has always been in communicable diseases. These virusesling so much and nobody truly knows the truth. I have not seen any statistics on how many cases World Health Organization starting back in april of this year, we have had almost no influenza. How come we have got covid but no influenza . Influenza have been cured by covid . Now they are telling you to get a flu shot, yet they are acting like the spike is nothing but covid. How much of it is influenza and how much of it is not . The fact of the matter is, if people would be honest with themselves in the past when you got a sniffle or you felt down you didnt go running to the doctor. Not everybody wants to the doctor, so yes you will have more cases. The same people who would never go to the doctor. For influenza, now everybody is running to the doctor every two seconds. So yes you will have more cases, not deaths, cases. I think it was in 2018 180,000 americans died from influenza with a vaccine. Nobody cared about those 80,000 people would die back then. Host now we have 244,000 people died from this. Even if it was that plus flu, it was still equal a lot of people dead. Caller the numbers reported today, if they go back and dissect them, they will clean them up because it is bogus reporting. Nobody dies of anything else anymore. Nobody dies of pneumonia or influenza, everybody dies from covid. I happen to be one of those cynics who believes that if you are going to give doctors more money to diagnose covid over influenza and pneumonia, that is what they are going to do. Host bob is coming from new york on the republican line. Bob, good morning. Caller good morning to you. That last caller was very smart. I can only speak for the area that i go in. I am not in georgia. Im not in florida. But around here, everybody is wearing a mask. And half of the places i go to, they actually temperaturecheck you before you go in. Donald trump was exactly right. In the city, they are not handing tickets but they are intimidat intimidating you if yu dont have a mask on. We have seen the ineffectiveness of masks. If we are seeing an increase in covid, it is not because people are not Wearing Masks, at least around here. Donald trump is exactly right, it is not a federal issue. Democrats would be right there to try to impeach him if he tried to impose martial law on people. I think personally that it is isgusting that cuomo refusing to give out the vaccine when it is available simply because it is coming from donald trump. Host where did Governor Cuomo said that he would not give out a vaccine if it became available . Caller what did he say . The words he said was, i think it is dangerous if it comes out well trumps president while trump is president. The report i saw on cspan this morning, with donald trump and the people from pfizer and so forth, they said the exact same host last month, while speaking at a rally, President Trump addressed the issue of Wearing Masks and social distancing during the pandemic. Here is what trump said last month. [video clip] european lockdowns are not stopping the virus but creating misery, robert t, suffering and death. Misery, suffering and death. The people are tired, they cant do it anymore. They are losing their businesses, they are losing jobs. They go back and their business is closed for nine months. They cant do it. We know the disease, we social distance, we do all the things you have to do. If you get close, wear a mask. It is not controversial to me, wear a mask. Social distance. You are going to get better. If i can get better, anybody can get better and i got better. To heat who is calling from virginia on the independent line. Caller thank you for taking michael. Thank you for taking my call. Enforcement but to be done in individual shots. I think people should be allowed when people enter their shop and if they choose not to wear a mask than they are arrested they get charged for trespassing and you know their names. I dont think this should be made at the federal level. I think every tops every politics is local. Enforcement of such things is basically politics. If are clamoring about enforcement about Something Like this, then why didnt they come or about the op rule laws mob rule laws when states were protesting the horrible things with the death of black people at the hands of policeman . I think the same enforcement, if you want Something Like this enforced then you need to demand all enforcement happens regardless of logical motives and the reasons you want to address respeech. Host some people are comparing mast mandates to the former objections over seatbelt laws where people said they had the wear seatbelts in their cars. And cities began to enforce seatbelt laws. With the same logic work for ms commanded that it is for a mask mandate that if it is for your seatbelt, you dont have a choice to not wear one and if you are caught not wearing one, pay fine. Does the same thing work for a mask mandate . Caller i dont think so at all. I think callers have made it sound wearing a mask is for your own protection. I dont think that is the case. I think the purpose was to prevent you from injuring other people and seatbelts are designed for self protection measures. I dont think that is an applicable comparison whatsoever. Host would it make a difference if you knew that the cdc now says wearing a mask not only protects other people but can protect you from getting the coronavirus . Caller i would like to see the evidence on that. Dont think the medical profession anywhere, cdc, pfizer, all the other pharmaceutical Companies Really understand completely how this contagion works. I am very curious about what the efficacy is of the covid19 virus being tested as positive versus a false positive for the, common cold. The host lets go to steve from anaheim, california on the wiccan line. On the republican line. Caller as far as the mask it goes, most of your callers are kind of correct and kind of wrong. The purpose of the mask is not for you to get it, it is someone who has it to keep it from spreading. We are in california. We have a mandate of wearing a mask. Our numbers are one million yesterday we reached the one million mark of how many infections we have. The mask itself does nothing. It does not stop it. This is a virus, a microscopic virus. You cannot see it through a microscope. Theres not a mask made that will stop a microscopic virus. This has turned into a political nightmare. As far as staying six feet apart, as far as taking Temperature Checks, as far as washing your hands, face, and gargling it is more effective than wearing a mask. Am i really one seeing the hearings on some of widen widens joe bidens doctors and advisors . Host let me point out a story fromnpr earlier this week the cdc has emphasized an updated reef issued tuesday. The protective benefits of masks are stronger, the more people wear masks correctly, the agency says. It seems like the cdc is now saying the mask not only keeps giving it to other people, it protects you from getting it from other people. Does that change your mind . Caller does that i would have to look at the data. I wear a mask because i have to a mask. Their study, are they studying how much fresh air or how much more pressure provides the virus more than the mask . Host i dont know. They just made this announcement tuesday saying they have Scientific Evidence it helps keep you from getting the coronavirus as well as helping you from spreading it to other people. Caller i will have to read the study. Reached the one million mark and everyone is wearing a mask. I dont think the mask itself is preventing the disease. I think washing your hands and personal hygiene do a better job than wearing the mask. Host lets go to Caroline Carolyn who was calling from tyler, texas. Caller i definitely believe in wearing a mask. Texas which is, a very conservative town of about 100,000 people in east texas. We have a lot of trump trump supporters. They think similarly to callers you had. Sally had a lot to say. I wish she would let her say so much. Seemingly, she said she did a lot of research. It is amazing how apparently the research she has done contradicts what the experts are saying about this virus as well as about Wearing Masks. Yesterday. Laundromat i went in, put my clothes into the washer, i came back out to sit in my car because i dont want to be inside that building with the air circulating and so forth. I did it real quickly. I didnt notice there were people in their not Wearing Masks, including the two attendants there. About five orout six times checking on my clothes. At the end, i went over to one of the attendants and i said why dont you all wear masks . , i dont know. She may be just didnt want to tell me why she did wear a mask. Then i asked the other attendant and she said, it is because we are all adults here in this laundromat and we know what to do. We wash our hands so we dont have to wear a mask. Short, i said i wont be frequenting your establishment anymore. I agree with the other colors. The other callers. I think the best way to control it is for individual businesses to have signs to say not to enter without a mask. Then you have to enforce that. I noticed the businesses do sometimes , sometimes not. This one didnt even have a sign saying not to a mask sanctuary mask. Host on operation warp speed, trump addresses concerns about the rising of covid cases and the potential for a lockdown while making a reference to last weeks election. Here is a portion from the white house on friday. [video clip] pres. Trump National Lockdown costs 50 billion a day and hundreds of thousands of jobs every day. Ideally, we want to go to a lockdown. This administration will not be going to a lockdown. Hopefully whatever happens in the future, who knows which administration it will be, time will tell. I can tell you this administration will not go to a lockdown. Lives and they cost a lot of problems. The cure cannot be worse than the problem itself. I have said it many times. When you look at what happens during a lockdown, it is horrible what happens. Drugs, alcohol, depression, loss , itobs, business closures is a terrible thing. This administration will not go into a lockdown but we will be vigilant and careful. On friday. Was trump lets look at what some of our social media followers are saying about mask mandates. Heres a text from patricia who says masks should be a National Mandate with a fine for noncompliance. Some people dont have enough common sense or consideration for others to whether. To wear them. Another text from robert, people should wear a mask people should wear a mask. People should wear a mask. My family is in funeral service. Live or die, i wear a mask. Is penalizing stores and restaurants who dont enforce it. It can result in a fine or a business and result in a close for 24 hours. This is from alexander. I advise my clients and how to maintain their vehicle well. If i need medical advice, i go to the medical officials. Publicld wear a mask in as dr. Fauci said a long time ago. Either we be part of the solution or part of the problem. But no one was listening to him and instead he was criticized. Lets go to taryn whos calling from nebraska. On the independent line, good morning. Are you seeing people with masks in nebraska . Rural i live in a immunity and it is about 5050. When i go to the eastern part of the state and see my doctors, there is more mask plants my masks. Rs there is more i am a profiler. If i go to a business and see it has a lot of tight spaces, a lot of people, i put my mask on. I am a retired health care worker. But handwashing, proper hygiene, that is important. We are talking about our family holidays because my doctor ghter is in health care. They have been exposed to covid, theyre going through it. , my husband, my fatherinlaw we are breaking up holidays just to risk is to limit the risk of exposure. People need to be smart about traveling. And about it is about consideration. Host that is one of the things we have heard talked about, the thatl responsibility, people should have enough social sense to not be in large crowds and not be in places where they could spread or catch covid19. We see that is not working in a lot of places, especially looking at the fights going on. If people want to take care of themselves voluntarily, is it the responsibility of states and towns to force them to do so . Caller i dont think it is the responsibility of the states and towns. The state and the federal government should do it the state and federal government to do it. If the federal government wants to do anything, they should give money to the state for individualized commercial campaigns and make it regional by the state and make it personal. If you want people to take this serious, you have got to show it personal about people it is affecting in the state. Everybody knows everybody. Keep it local, that is how you will get people to buy in. Listening to politics, that just makes people dig their heels in and say im not doing this, im not doing that. D. C. Nk that washington, and our media has polarized our country more than what it needs to be. If everybody would get over it and use common sense, covid is going to go through his process. We are going to get immunity. It is already mutating and changing. My question as a health care worker, we have a hard time getting influenza shots. Covid is going to be the same thing, it is going to be changing. If we get a vaccine out there, we might already be behind the eight ball getting it effective. Host there are some governors changing their minds who opposed mask mandates who are now saying theyre going to require it. Heres a statement from governor gary herbert from utah who originally said he was against ms commanded but now is ordering it against a mask mandate but is now ordering it. Heres what he said. We cannot debate any longer. Individual is important and it is our rule of law that protect that freedom. Laws are put into place to protect all of us. That is what we have traffic lights, speed limits, and seatbelts, and that is why we now have a mask mandate utah put a mask mandate mask mandate. Utah put a mask mandate in place that replaced local mask mandates waste on covid rates. This is because utah saw a major spike in covid19 cases. Some governors are changing their minds about whether mask mandates are necessary for their areas. Lets go back to our phone line and talk to jeff calling from kentucky on the republican line. Caller i was just wanting to think people should wear a mask. There is no respect for fellow americans. People dont respect anything anymore. I go to church with people who were not who will not wear for nothing. Out of respect, i think you should wear a mask. I have Serious Health issues. If you are not going to do it for yourself what you out of well you ought to say jeff has been through a lot we should do it for him. People are not going to do it. Then you go back to enforcing it. In kentucky, you dont have to wear a Motorcycle Helmet but you have to wear a seatbelt. You have to put a seatbelt but you can kick your kids in a pickup at right around you could put your kids in a pickup and ride around. Host you said that people in your church, you see some people Wearing Masks and some people who are not Wearing Masks. Are church is open in kentucky . In our area, a lot of large churches have not yet reopened. Caller churches have been june, ie june think. We are not a large church. 60, 70, 80 in the mornings and half of that in night services. We can do social distancing pretty good. But people are not going to wear them. It is not who is president , it has not got anything to do with that. People realize they need to respect this thing and until we get a vaccine for does not going to get much better. People have the attitude that this is a free country and i can do what i want. If it ismatter democrat or republican, it has nothing to do with that. I do think masks are very important. I wish people would do it out of respect for other. Host one of the neighboring governors to kentucky, mike dewine of ohio, delivered a statewide address on wednesday in response to the surge of cases they saw of covid19. Not only the surge of cases but of hospitalizations in his estate. Here he is announcing a new mask mandate for ohio businesses including penalties. [video clip] clear thereit is are some businesses wear a mask wearing is lacking wear masks wearing is lacking. Is the mostsk cocked effective costeffective, easiest way to prevent the spread of covid19. Every retail employee has the right to work in an environment which is as safe as can be which means all customers must wear masks. Each ohioan who goes out to shop, wherever they go, they have a right to know that every store the enter, every door they and thewill be safe people they encounter will all be wearing a mask. A first violation of this order will bring about a written warning. The second violation will bring about closure of the store for hours. 4 hours we must do this to protect frontline workers. Host lets see if we can get more calls and. Lets go to alan who is calling from honolulu, hawaii on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller thanks for having me. Masks. We should wear the it should be mandated, but you cant enforce it. In hawaii, people respect each other so we try to wear masks and try to help each other out. We have a lower rate that is why we have a lower rate. Havehave laws where if you too much people in and things like that, they can close you down. People understand we should wear the mask to help everybody else. It goes both ways. Mask text you tects you and it protects they say the mask protects you and it protects other people. It became political and that is why we are in the situation we are in. Host lets talk to bennett medic bennett was calling from texas. Good morning. Im a refugee from bosnia. I think we are trading freedom for stupidity, this is amazing. Noefuse to wear a mask matter where i go. No matter if they have security or i challenged it. You forbid me from going inside . If they say no then i am going. Mask you dont believe the is helping prevent the or aression of covid19 you arguing against the state of texass ability to tell you to wear a mask . Caller both. It is not true we are having a spike. [indiscernible] the cdc posted three weeks ago, 18 of people who were mask all of the time get protected. If it doesnt work then why are you forcing me to do that . Who isets talk to erica calling from san diego, california on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller can you hear me . Host yes we can, go ahead. In san diego, you have to wear a mask. They dont let you inside if you dont wear it and it is a good thing. That is what i have to say. Thank you. Host lets go to jeff calling from kansas city on the independent line. Good morning. Caller thank you. On the mask, i try to look at things from my own opinion and make my own decisions based on what i see and talking with people. With covid, my wife and i spent and in the forest preserves forest preserve and things like that. I think the mask thing can be overdone. We see people Wearing Masks in the forest. , have we scared people to that degree . Through the forest behind beside the oak tree and there is no one around, the purple by the the person by themselves. Then you see the person driving in the car with a mask on. I said to myself i think we are doomed. Host i took my kids for a hike up in the upper parts of maryland. We did wear masks because we never knew when we would run into somebody on the same trail. We didnt wear them when we didnt see anyone but when we saw people coming toward us, we put our masks on. Do think that is a reasonable protection . Do you think that is a reasonable protection . Caller not in those circumstances. In a crowded area, there is a place for it. If you go back for covid when we dealt with the flu, we were told , dont touch her face, keep your hands away from your notes, nows now i see people putting a mask on, taking it off, laying it on a table, you get up and put it back on. You are back and forth touching your nose and mouth. I see a lot of things going on that it doesnt make a lot of sense. I am kind of curious. The other thing is before the ,ise of covid and the cases right now i see more people Wearing Masks than ever and they are taking temperatures. Why is covid on the rise . R numbers higher than they were months ago . People are Wearing Masks and having Temperature Checks, why are the numbers higher . Host there are some people going to congress who say they and other people shouldnt wear masks. Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted this at the other day as she was heading to congress. Covered covidsion in congress, mask mask mask. I told my freshman class that masks are oppressive. In georgia, we worked out, shop, and go to School Without masks. My body, my choice. There are a lot of different people with different opinions about covid. Coming up next, we are going to analyze the results of the election with two guest. Joining us next will be karin lips, president of the network for enlightened women about the gains republican candidates made in this years election. We will meet Latosha Brown who is the founder of whack voters matter on africanamerican on theand their impact election of joe biden. Stick with us, we will be right back. With eddiepth lodge junior. His most recent book include exodus. N, join us with your phone calls, texts, and tweets. Cspanindepth on tv on two. You are watching cspan, your unfiltered view of government created by americas Television Cable company. Brought to you today by your television provider. Washington journal continues. Host we are back with karin lips, the president of the network of enlightened women. She is here to talk about the gains republican women and incumbents made in this years general election. Good morning. Guest good morning, it is great to join you. Host what is the network of enlightened women . It is a premier organization for conservative university women. We work to educate, equip, empower young conservative women to be leaders of a free society. That means we have chapters on College Campuses across the country. We have been around more than 15 years. We have a professional network full of alums and professionals that want a community of likeminded conservative women to empower them to live their best life and to speak up and to be Community Leaders. Host when you write out the name of your organization, you e a small e in enlightened. Canucks plan that . That you learned quickly the names of organizations and acronyms matter. That e stood out to different and a contrasted with the uppercase o. We were focused on reading books, bringing women together, we wanted to be open and bring women together. We thought that lowercase e struck the town. Host you work with young conservative women on campus. Did you work with conservative women with the election from last week . 501 c 3 are a organization so focused on educating and training. Women look up to these women who won elections. That is the story im excited to talk about you talk about with you today. Our students read magazines like cosmo and clamor and some of the and glamour and some of the younger women Pay Attention to teen vogue. Thelook at those and all the election. On most were on one new member of the squad and one new member who will be joining them. When it comes to women and the 2020 election is the republican women in the house. Before this election, there were 13 republican women in the house. In the 2018 midterm, only one new republican woman was elected to the house. That is a completely different story it is a different story this time. Newlye an we have 16 elected republican women in the house. That is a big story. That is what i would love to see the womens magazine and Womens Movement talk about. They come from diverse backgrounds have Different Reasons for running, and have great stories. Host if we are seeing the numbers correctly, the Record Number of republican women ever serving at the same time in the u. S. House was 25. That was a setback in 2006. When Congress Begins next year, there will be a Record Number of republican women in congress, there will be 28. Fromt doubling the number the current number of republican women in the house right now. What made this change . Host guest a few things happened. The congresswoman from new york during the midterms recruited a lot of women. Many of them lost. Only one new woman was elected among republicans. Andstarted a new pac played in primaries. This is an organized effort to get more women elected starting by working with them in the primaries. I believe that made it difference. Made a difference. We have heard the story about women on the left any elections but those women dont speak for all americans. We are in the 100th anniversary of women earning the right to vote in this country and i think the number of women we saw when n showshat saw wi that we are not a monolithic voting block. Conservative women saw those women on the left stand up and went and they dont speak for all women. These women wanted to run and make sure their voices were heard and their policy decisions were discussed. A lot of women were running from a probusiness background that focused on cutting regulations to make sure that all americans have the opportunity to start businesses and they dont get overregulated by the government. There are issues we dont see women on the left talking about and that motivated women on the right to run. Host you can join in on this conversation. We are going to open up our regular lines. Democrats can call 2027488000, republicans at 2027488001, independents at 2027488002. You can text us at 2027488003 and we are always reading on social media on twitter at cspanwj and that facebook. Com cspan. Byse elections one conservative women, were there issues that seem to resonate around the nation . Guest one of the issues i think that is going to emerge is antisocialism. We have seen socialism gain a renewed popularity on the left. My work in on my work on College Campuses. There are chapters of the juncker democraticsocialist club on college canvases. 15 yearss a student ago, there were some socialists. But the democrats really tempered them. I dont think that is an item they wanted on the resume but now it is gaining popularity. In part because of alexandria ocasiocortez. To know these new Republican House members, three of them have had direct family connections or have face problems from socialism. Mytoria hartz from Congressional District in indiana is from ukraine. You have maria salazar, one of her parents is from cuba. You have women who have a direct relationship and have directly faced socialism in their lives. They have had a different expanse than the socialism that alexandria ocasiocortez and the squad is selling americans. Im excited to have new spokeswomen against socialism and having them speak out against the problems against socialism with socialism. Host you were talking about the diverse backgrounds of these conservative women going to congress. There is a paragraph talking about these backgrounds i want to read. Marjoriet that Taylor Greene made headlines for her support of qanon theories while owns a gun themed restaurant that the five shutdown orders and were Service Carry firearms. Maria lrs salazar is a journalist worked for the spanishlanguage network telemundo. She flipped her district as did Stephanie Bice of oklahoma. All ofschbach of whom served before in their statehouse. Cynthia Cynthia Loomis will be the first woman to represent wyoming in the u. S. Senate. She is an attorney and former lawmaker. These women are coming from different expenses but they will be representing their districts and states in different expanse is but they will be representing their districts and states in congress. How are you getting these women into the primaries and having them when . Win . Hem guest when i asked questions about how there are fewer republican or conservative women at the federal level, i like to take it back to the state level. State legislatures are often pipelines to leadership. On the right, there has been an fourt to ask more women state legislator seats. That has women being on the seat and ready to run for congressional seats. As i was reading through bios during this election season, i thought it was interesting. Who wereany candidates against socialism. Another theme was that many had experience at the state and local level. Another thing i saw emerge was many had experience in business. Many people had bad business experience with the government and that was a motivator to run. I dont think we can undervalue having that state and local experience. Motivatingtant and a factor for women considering running and wants to have National Influence where they can make a difference and want to have National Influence where they can make a difference. Host you were talking about the pac that helped women get into primaries. Did anything change in the Republican Partys approach and supporting candidates in 2020 . Was the gop helpful in this process . Guest you would have to ask those candidates but i can tell you from what i saw there was a lot of support from the local, national, and state level once they got there primaries. Pac made the difference was at the local level. Then he saw the party coalesce around many of these candidates then you saw the party coalesce around these candidates. Host we will start with beverly who is calling from brooklyn, new york on the democratic line. I would like to ask, i see concern of the terminology in reference to socialism. Can you offer a clear understanding about what are the tenets of socialism and how do they get tied to fellow americans . I would like litigation on that clarification on that. On the rise of gop women, do you think it is a backlash to some of the behaviors seen by trump and that now more women are trying to step up and participate in the election process . Guest thank you so much for your question. , the waybout socialism i would look at it is what is the role of government in our lives. Government as not the answer to all of my problems. I would rather have more governance at the local and state level. I think what we are seeing in this brand of socialism emerging with alexandria ocasiocortez leading it, she is talking about things like the Green New Deal and medicare for all. A much bigger role for the government and that is what concerns me. She is selling it as a softer, gentler socialism. What we have seen historically we have seen historically it doesnt work and it wont stay soft for long. She might sell it as it is going to help people but i think we should be worried about what it will do to our life. Host we were talking about the diverse backgrounds of the conservative women headed towards congress. One of our followers has a question about this topic. This is from brat from dayton, ohio says i think it is great to increase the dissipation the participation of conservative women. I applaud their achievement. Is the network of enlightened women socially diverse and do allow lesbian women and couples to equally participate. Guest our chapters are based at the College Level and we bring events ringing people in from across the spectrum and with different views. That is one thing we are excited about. At our National Conference each year, we will bring in two people with opposing views, sometimes a democrat and a republican, sometimes two republicans. We are focused on intellectual diversity which i think we need to see more of on College Campuses. A new study came out this year from the Cato Institute that self censoriberals conservatives surveyed censored. Whether they want to learn more or just want to learn how to engage and try to turn someones mind on something. We try to bring in a lot of people to the organization. Guest tell us what you mean by host tell us what you mean by selfcensor. Guest in this study by the Cato Institute, they looked at it a and they asked people if they kept their views quite. Quiet. When they are in a job, they might not mention what their politics are. Conservative stated more. Conservatives did. It more did it more. Ony found republicans College Campuses the longer they were in higher education, if they were getting advanced degrees, they would selfcensor even more. When we talk with College Students, many decide to keep their views private. We put out a book and in it we shared stories of women. Many of them decided to keep their views quite before quiet before they stepped on campus. That is something we should be concerned about, that is something you cant fix by a new policy from school administration. That is a cultural problem. That is peer pressure. It is not just grades they were worried about, they were worried about making friends. College for many students is about making lifelong friends. I think we live in a country where there is so much pressure that many conservative students decide to keep quiet. That is a problem. I was interested in this data because it confirmed what i heard in stories and College Students from College Students about this pressure to keep quite. It is on the Cato Institutes website. It goes into hiring and job data and how much conservative versus how theirorry about views might impact their career prospects. Greg callingo to from tennessee on the republican line. Caller good morning. I want to congratulate the women that got elected into the house. I hope we get a new speaker of the house out of this. We need nancy pelosi to go. Guest thank you for calling it. It is interesting you touched on nancy pelosi because we have seen some democrats speak out. There is interparty fighting about socialism and the direction of their party. We have seen one congresswoman speak out to say she is not going to vote for nancy pelosi. That relationship between the current president and nancy pelosi has become toxic. There doesnt seem to be any effort to Work Together. It seems to have become personal. I think she is marching the democrats for the left which is not the direction the American People want to go. We have seen this with the handling of covid and stimulus checks. To hear if youed recall in and say they are ready for her to go. To call in and say they are ready for her to go. Host pelosi was asked about those topical differences between the Democratic Party and house members. Heres what she said. [video clip] progress, in these philosophical differences when it is going to be more to the left. If you are going to get something done regardless of this year that legislation has to be more in the middle. How do you sort that out with [indiscernible] our caucus has its differences. I would not want to lead in a caucus that is a rubberstamp, lockstep caucus. That is called republicans. We are the democratic already and we have several exhibits is in our midst several exuberances in our midst. We respect that. Our unifying principle is americas working families. Everybody is there to make progress for americas working families and in terms of the children. Our children, their education, the health of their families, a safe environment in which they can thrive and a world at peace in which you can reach fulfillment. About the families, nobody is more attuned to that were connected to working families then joe biden as president of the u. S. Consensus, we dont govern from high. Unanimity, i said sick i said consensus. Host that was Speaker Pelosi talking about the differences between the members of her own caucus. What do you see as the differences between the conservative women and the issues they are going through before i go to congress. The differences between the conservative women and the Democratic Caucus and perhaps even the differences of conservative women in their own caucus . Guest a lot of these women rent tight races. They have been very campaign focused. It is not clear exactly yet what theyre going to make their number one priority. We have seen common themes emerge. Things like lowering taxes, making sure there is not too much regulation coming out of d. C. , addressing covid at the National Level but leaving some of that to the States States to figure out and at the local level. It is interesting to hear the speaker talk about intellectual diversity within their party grappleshe is going to with that she isnt have the numbers she thought after this election. Shes going to have to work with alexandria ocasiocortez and the squad and that is going to be a bigger challenge for her and she is anticipating. Host how will these new conservative women bring their voices into the Republican Congress . In the house then it was in his current congressional session. Voices in the Republican Caucus are going to be more important as well. What do these women bring to the discussions . Guest eight of the 10 seats that looked from democratic to republican were won by republican women. We talk about the big picture number. If you focus on the flip, that is a huge number. At the campaign level, there is going to be more enthusiasm for supporting republican women candidates who won. At the National Level, im excited there will be more spokeswomen, more women talking about different issues. Maybe they are some of the same issues men could talk about but it is great to have more women out there talking about them. The left always brings up the issue of people pay. It will be great for conservative women talking about that issue and how additional legislation impacts men women. I think they will find their different committees and become leaders on them. Whether it is mary miller from illinois who is a farmer or candidates who have background in business or one who is a pharmacist. They will get Good Committee assignments where they can be there expertise on issues and become National Leaders on those issues. Host you bring up one of the issues we hear women politicians talk about and that is equal pay. D. C. That becoming a big issue for conservative women do you see that becoming a big issue for conservative women either pro or con . We all americans, want equal pay for women. The question is what are the statistics being used to measure that and what is the impact of additional federal legislation on that issue. Equal pay is the law of the land in this country. We have legislation requiring equal pay. The issue is what other steps do you want federal government taking when it comes to business and their relationship with employers and put and employees. I think were good to see women become leaders on those issues they care about. Elise stefanik in her first and second term focused on the issues in her home district. Having her as a leader for many of these women, i think they will follow suit of focusing on those issues at home, continuing to earn the trust of constituents so they can be reelected, and emerge as National Leaders. Not takeesswoman did on this issue in her first term. Won reelection for her fourth term. At the National Level, they will focus on issues they know best. Im sure they will get assigned to committees with those issues and we will see them emerge as leaders. Host lets talk to barbara who was calling from florida on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller thank you for having me. Regarding the terminology that if you are a rep that if you are a republican you are on the right and conservative and if you are a democrat you are on the left and a socialist. Who im you have women would expend that, how do you go about painting those definitions go about changing those definitions . I find it difficult being who i am with those terminologies, it doesnt sit right with me. How do you see your conservatives conservative women handling those kinds of monikers . Guest im called you asked about the labels because this is something im interested in. One label we see the left has ,ned the level of feminism that they have a version of them in his that they sell women. I think the three of these conservative women and one issue not talked about is Amy Coney Barrett and her victory. The label that might have the most room for change is what does it mean to be a feminist . What does it mean to be an empowered woman . One of the things we talk about is a new brand of feminism, opportunity feminism where you focus on policies that give women the opportunity to build the lives they want. That might look very different. We should consider it a victory that it looks very different because it means that women are choosing what they want and they are empowered to choose what they want. I lookingrt of this forward to i am looking forward to is rethinking what a womens empowerment looks like, rethinking what feminism looks like today. When you ask americans if they identify as feminist, the number is lower than expected. Yet young women what some type of empowering movement. What the left is selling isnt resonating. I think the values and focus we will see from the right might change that. I think all americans should speak up for the weight he left treated Amy Coney Barrett the way the left treated Amy Coney Barrett. She made choices many of them have made. She has seven children, she is now on the Supreme Court. She could be able model just as nancy pelosi is to some women on the left. Im excited to see this new version of what american women what debbie walsh points out that while Many Republican women in congress, women are still very under representative over the republican side. Here is a quote, in many ways, this is a simple story, you cannot see gains in officeholders unless you have increases in the candidates. These are important gains. They need to be celebrated and acknowledge. Women are still very underrepresented on the republican side. Here is a story that says according to the pew research center, about 38 of registered women voters in 2018 and 2019 identified as republicans while only 6 of republicans in the house were women at that time. How do you change those numbers . Percentage ofge women identifying as republicans but only 6 last session in congress who are women. Should that change, and how do you change it . Think what i mentioned earlier about building a field team or pipeline of women is important. Most candidates do not just run for president or just for congress. Or onre on School Boards a board of supervisors. They are elected at that local we have seen thing to encourage more women is first ask could we have seen data that asking women matters makes a difference, so there are a lot of women asking others to run. And then not focusing on may be like and gotshal seat in trying to find someone to run for it, but taking a step back and trying to find great women candidate at the state and local level and get them in the pipeline so when there are open seats there is a chance to run, there are people ready to run. Reid from is washington on the republican line. Good morning. Caller good money. I have a question, but i would like to make a quick statement about socialism. Khrushchev said people will not buy communism, if you sell them socialism incrementally they will wake up in a commonest world. Stalin said it is not how the people but that matter, it is who counts the vote that matters. And another quick comment, why blue ns team all big all blue . Theme all blue . Host i can tell you, the carpet in here is not blue and neither is this desk, but go ahead and ask your question. Caller thank you. The question has to do with when you guessed is in the university environment, to what extent would you report that the management layer of the universities, how much do they push back against your organization . Caller thank you for that question. I would say it varies i schools. Some we find are very actively engaged, for better or worse and some have more of a hands off approach. One challenge, sometimes these , one challenge some of our clubs have faced is that many campuses require new clubs , a facultyadvisor advisor. A you are a woman student at university, a liberal who wants to start a club, there is a number of faculty that you could go to and ask. There doesnt seem to be as many conservative women faculty at these universities. Sometimes our students have a challenge finding an advisor. That is one challenge. You mentioned the administration , a study came out a year or so ago finding that it is not just faculty who are liberal that students interact with, but there seems to be a layer of administrative bureaucracy, more and more deans and assistant deans, and that someone compiled the data and found the ratio of conservative to liberal was 121. Universityng administration, and that is a staggering number. With of those are helping figuring out budgets for different programs, so that can be an issue. Who areud of the women part of our organization. They will reach out sometimes two faculty members in the business school. Sometimes we can find a friendly member there. Try to find those advisors and then put the program in. It it is great for the larger campus community. One of our chapters has done a program on socials is him socialism that has done well. We have had social events. They have to work through with their own school systems. It is a good skill of how to get something done. From this is alexis wilmington, north carolina, on the independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. I am retired, retired maybe five or six years. Had i had tover take because of the insurance. It was not to further my career. It was for Health Insurance paid when you save medicare for all like it is, you know, we are going to communism and socialism, i understand how important it is when you are sick to be able to see a doctor and not have to worry about scraping a copipe together. Hygienist who was bragging about only paying 600 a month for her Health Insurance. I do not know what she paper coinsurance, but that is a paid for coinsurance, but that is a devastating amount if you ask me. You do not hear lower income people calling in asking about medicare for all they are too busy working. Somebody has to speak up for them. We cannot turn our backs on people who need medical help. To say, we cannot do that because of socialism, i think that is selfish. I appreciate your calling and i hear the passion in voice. You really care about the issue and it is personal and it makes a difference, and i think health care is one of the issues that notcountry still has figured out. I do not think medicare for all is the answer. I think republicans should come up with a great alternative that they can work on to help. We want you to have the opportunity to have the health care that you need and that all americans need. It is a question of what the right policy is. This lets talk about election that just ended. Look at exit polls, it looks like that president elect biden received 57 of votes for women while christie received 42 . Looking at the story from the Washington Post, the gender gap began emerging as a major portion of elections in 1980 when ronald ragan one paid a slim majority have backed a democratic candidate in every election since 1996. On average, women have been a percentage for points points more likely than men to support a democratic candidate since 1980. How do you change that . How do you fight the numbers that say women seem to be gravitating toward the craddick candidate toward the democratic candidate for president . Caller there are some other nuggets that emerge in some different trends, so not just breaking down women versus men, but also single women versus married woman, breaking it down by education level. I think that based on this election where we have seen republican women do so well in some of the house races, there and programsrences for people to come together and figure out what can be learned from these women winning in these races. Looking at those numbers and sing what can be learned at the National Level, if i was a emigrant and counted a democrat, this election would signal to me there is a concern and i would be worried about the next election and how women might vote. Host this is james from connecticut on the republican line. Good morning. For taking myyou call. Say, i love my Republican Party, but i think we are beginning to lose focus on keep looking at females. What about the africanamericans . Numbersooking at the that africanamericans joining the Republican Party as opposed to women . The other thing, we have had some good victories, that cant we contribute a lot of that to President Trump because he has polarized the Party Like Never before. He got more points than any republican in history, so shouldnt we be giving him a little more praise . That is all i got to say. For yourhank you question. You brought up the different divisions by race at this election. So the is the next topic oars can stay tuned to talk more about that. If you think those numbers were unexpected on the left, conservatives have talked more about that, but how it broke down by grace and some successes that the republicans had based somethingo that was many on the right are excited about. You bring up what is going to happen Going Forward and what we can attribute this to, it seems on the left that this idea towards women, this sort of womens march idea of the protests and encouraging that i do not thinkm, that is resonating. There needs to be a new approach to women. I went to a counter rally to the womens march here, and towards the end, the march arrived and really surrounded it and started yelling. One of my friends and their children, it was not a compelling version they were presenting on the left. Not something you would want to join. It was as if they were time to intimidate the women. This does not work. If you have to yell at somebody to try to get them to follow your views, that does not work. Exciting to see a more conservative version of feminism. I think this will lead us towards more of a march towards freedom in this country. Host this is carol from houston, texas, on the democratic line. Caller good morning. This is about the socialism. It is great in this country, a lot of people have it, the people at the top. They get all of the tax breaks and it goes streets straight from the poor and the middleclass straight to them. It is great for them. That is why we do not have health care and other things we need. It would work well in these Foreign Countries if we did not interfere and place sanctions on people and tortured them until they have uprisings because they cannot get food. We will not let socialism take root anywhere. Or communism or anything else. We go to war over that because do not want to hear. Ll of those organizations say obviously, i think i stand for my own views as a conservative and no one else, and i think conservatism provides a compelling to compelling alternative to women and what we want to seek Going Forward. For we want to thank you coming on and talking about the Record Number of conservative women heading towards kangas congress. Coming up next, Latosha Brown talks about her organization and the role black voters played in campaign 2020. Stick with us. We will be right back. Sunday Night University of as social laws he sociology professor talks about this is on people they have contact with and what is happening now in the digital age is that the police are collecting information on all of these people who have no direct criminal justice contact. Organization an that was started in 2016 to shift the dynamics around. We wanted to build power and our communities so we could have influence on impact on policies. Because whate fund we felt is that in order to really have a robust democracy, you have to have an engaged electorate. We would engage voters on the local level to shift the policies for the communities. Host what did your organizing approach look like this year . What did you do on the ground to get more black voters to register and to show up and vote . Guest we did not start this year. We started in 2016. We think that what happens is oftentimes in the black community you see people come around election time. Its like if you have a friend that only calls when they want something, youre not excited to see them. For us, the way to build power is to build a base and continue to engage communities to the first thing we learned is that all politics are local. We started working with communities including georgia and the other 11 states, to support them around the local elections. So we have been building relationships over time for the last four years. We actually show up and support they are working around the School Board Races or really being able to educate people around the process of voting, we support them and provide grant dollars to groups this election, over 600 grassroots organizations. We were able to give resources to them for their programs. And we were able to give them campaigns, messaging and we were able to create a campaign to Work Together all across the region. I think the things that we have done, i think that has made the difference. We recognize all politics are local and being able to build the groups where they exist. And the way we talk about boating, we talk about voting beyond the idea that it is about participation. Able about power and being to educate and connect the community. It is certainly a leverage of power and we want people to use their agency to have more influence to select the representation for our. Ommunities we really want to be able to shape policy. And we thought it was really important for us to influence. What i mean by that is i know i was extremely frustrated that even in the National Media platforms, you would hear the south talked about if we were a football team, a red team and a blue team. I am part of the Humanity Team raided it is not who i am as a label, but who i am as a human being. Schools, more access to resources. We want what all other americans want. It was important that we are shifting the narrative of who we are in the south and that there is a new coalition of people in the south to be able to shape andcountry and are bait puour fate. Consider your organization to be a partisan organization . Everybody totering vote . Organization, our matter that lack voters , to is our entire goal provide education and engagement. We do not ask what party you belong to. Ist we are interested in talking to black people around their process, their agency and understanding the political process good we have other , for we are able candidates,on the because the community that we are working with is the best candidate for our agenda. Our focus is on building independent black political power to leverage and make changes in the community. Host were you able to see any specific results from your strategy that you said you have been working on since 2016 . Can you point to any specific results from this election . Guest i think we got many results. Were manyhile there people who did a lot of work there, we are so proud that we were one of the organizations that made a difference. Georgia has always been seen as saw, tate that what you when you look at who participated in the election, there were more lack voters that participated in this election that voted for president elect biden men who voted for President Trump. Oftentimes there is a lot of areas, bute urban ,hen you look at the numbers there has been a lion share of the votes, but you also saw an increase in savanna and other places in the black belt of georgia that are more rural prewe look at how a lot of the messaging, when you look at young people, their percentage of voting, this election was 70 . In georgia, it was 21 . The bottom line is part of our work is to get people to get engaged and part of what we believe is that america currently, almost half of the country do not bother to participate in the cycle. We do not believe it is because people do not care but they feel disconnected from the process. They do not really understand how boating will help advance or change your lives. A lot of the work we are doing is to be able to engage in those are often notat talk to or even sought to for support. We think that what the outcome in georgia, to have such a high turnout, of more young people voting, or people of color voting, that that that resulted from our work and others that have been created in the space to be able to increase our Voter Education and engagement strategy centered around people and their power, not necessarily candidates and parties. Will open up our regular lines again. Democrats at 202 7488000. Republicans at 202 7488001. Independents can call 202 7488002. You can always text us at 202 7488003. We are always reading on social media on twitter and on facebook. I know part of your story starts 1998your run for office in for the Alabama State board of education. What happened in that race and tell us about how it affects what you do now. Amazing that that was 20 years ago. I knew about Voter Suppression but i actually experienced it then. I was a young woman, running for the state board of education. I had done a lot of Youth Leadership work so i wanted to impact the state and really lift up policy issues. I ran for office. I was the underdog. I ran against a 12 year incumbent who was a favorite. Never ranung woman, for office in my life. I did not know what i was doing other than i knew the cause that i was supporting. I ran my campaign out of kinkos. That was my campaign office. Was able to do the organizing, i learned a lesson, that organizing works. I went all around the state and talked to people in all the areas i was working in, and probably about two weeks before the election i got a call to come and see someone who is powerful, only to discover that the poll had us running an. That wasremarkable given that i running against such a strong incumbent. The race was so tight that they could not call it on election night. It took them seven days. Processesnd how these work. On the seventh day, they called the election and the results 117 that my opponent had more votes than i had. I accepted that. I was prepared to move on for the next seat. Alabama, i think the state certifies the election , so the state certified the results at noon. I got a phone call at 12 05 from to brace myself, that the head of the Democratic Party was going to call me. Said ialled me, and he just wanted to let you know that i am so sorry to make this call, but there is a sheriff in one of , a counties that you ran county that i actually carried the sheriff said that he found 800 votes that he had placed in a safe that he forgot. I guess he remembered three minutes after the race was certified. So i said that is great. So count them. In my mind, that is another chance. 800 votes, legitimate votes, sure. He said it is not that simple. I said what you mean . He said the race has already been certified so we cannot count them. Then i felt completely powerless. I said there is nothing you can do . So here was a person who had that, and remembered he was interested by the people to be able to protect them. Rememberedeniently seven days after and three minutes after the race was after the race was certified. That is when i first came facetoface with Voter Suppression and nothing ever happened. It was,as given advice, you can seek legal remedy. We know often times that those cases are very hard to be overturned. At the time, i did. Not have a lot of money. The first thing i learned was how common Voter Suppression was. As i Start Talking to other candidates and other people, particularly in rural areas, recognizing Voter Suppression was an issue i was going to fight. If people voted, they should have their vote counted. I became a major proponent for the rest of my life around making sure people vote peoples vote counts. The second thing i learned was how, if we have to create more accountability measures, that those would have been bad actors in this process, we have to hold them accountable and lift those stories up and let people know. The third thing i learned was that organizing works. I, as a young woman who did not know what i was doing, had never run for public office, running against an incumbent, but what i did know how to do was organize. I knew that if you go to the people and talk to folks, be able to listen to them, connect to their issues, in fact, you can make a difference. All of those things of actually being part of the shaping of my work, im still doing work that is informed by that moma and experience and has fueled my commitment of why i fight so hard for Voting Rights and fight so hard to make sure every person has their voice and vote count. Host lets let some of our viewers join this conversation. We will start with atlanta, georgia on the independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Im an africanamerican. Im neither a republican or democrat, i can think on my own. Most blackarty people vote democrat. Biden is. Joe biden is the biggest racist there is. He had friends that were kkk, segregationists. He said of a group of black kids, you are not black unless you vote for him. He said we all think alike. How can you call donald trump are racist when joe biden is . Even if you look up his racial he is in early alzheimers. Host go ahead and respond. Guest a couple of things. I think when i talk about comparison, even what you are raising around by then, you are talking about 20 years ago. I can give you examples around donald trump a couple of weeks ago for aligning himself with the proud boys, who he said to stand down and stand back, which is known by even the fbi as a white supremacist group. Being a woman who has done work social groups, it is a problem. Donald trump has a consistent long history around discrimination, including in his own properties. Donald trump is gone, so im not going to talk spend a lot of time talking about him. Aside from that, what i would like to raise is that part of what black people have voted for is an assumption we are voting for something other than what we are voting for. We make a tactical strategy and book black folks voted for black people. The majority of us made a decision despite a lot of the misinformation, because some of the information the caller is raising, im not familiar with. Ive seen some of that online and some of that cannot be substantiated. What i do know is there is an africanamerican woman on the ticket that will be the Vice President elect. That makes me happy as a black woman who i have dented dedicated my life that we expand representation. When i look at some of the policy issues, things i want when i look into the biden platform, that resonated with me. Hen i looked at who surrounded himself with, i saw black women on his campaign, black people on his campaign, black women i respect and admire, folks i know are committed to our community. That makes a difference to me. Work, when we are doing our work is not necessarily around just the candidate or party. Our work is about us. That we are making a tactical decision of who can we represent, support that is going to help reduce the harm happening to our community, will be more accountable to our community, and have at least a track record of engagement in our Community Around the things that we care about. The fact of the matter is, i think that we are going to keep going back and forth between two candidates that are distinctly different. I understand that what we know in america is way more than one racist in this country. There are quite a few of them. I also know, as someone who dealt with the issue, there is a distinction between even racism and white supremacy. We have to be able to draw that line. It creates a very dangerous environment for me, my community and the people i love and care about. There is an unraveling of democracy. One of the pieces i think that was very dangerous and around donald trump is to unravel democracy. As a person who is a native of selma, alabama, where people were beaten on the bridge 55 years ago because we understood that our protection and safety of having a democratic government was far more safe for us. Fundamentally, he had done everything he has done everything to unravel democracy, which creates another danger for our community. I am certainly happy with the results we have and i am certainly happy that most black folks are sophisticated enough to know the difference between racism and white supremacy. We are also sophisticated enough to know there are many people who seek to exploit lack pain, will come up black pain, will come up with misinformation, not because they really care about racism. We see actions every day. He would also use it as an opportunity to exploit black pain. The third thing, i think there in been a movement of folks a Racial Coalition that has been building ourselves, growing together and organizing so that we literally can shape whoever is in office, that we can actually put pressure on whoever is elected in office to make sure that our gender and issues are also considered and a part of the gender Going Forward. Agenda Going Forward. Host we have a lot of calls waiting. Lets go to robert in utah. Thing, you are the sharpest dresser they have got. You are looking good. Hearing and im dont know, but i am hearing are not asmen enthusiastic about voting democrat as they may have once been. Would understand black men more than a black woman. Is there an effort to focus on that and get the guys back into camp because we are going to need everybody . You are looking at the numbers, the overall numbers of the cant afford to lose anybody. I was wondering if you are making an effort to do that, and thank you, and i will take that off the air. Guest thank you for the question. What i will say is i think there is an issue around not just men in general. Black men voted for biden at a higher percentage than any other Constituency Group in this country, white men, white women, latinos, native americans. Black men voted at a higher Percentage Rate for biden than any other Constituency Group in this country with the exception of black women. I am raising that because i do think there is something to unpack. I think there are three core pieces. One, i think we dont need to exaggerate that. 80 of support for any party is extraordinary. We dont see that with any other Constituency Group. I think that even while there is a focus around how did that come about, i think we need to acknowledge that. This victory, while it was led by black women and black black men were not far behind us. The second thing i would say is there is a frustration in the political process across the board in this country. There has been a frustration with black men and black people consistently around even when we have been talking to folks around will our issues be centered. Will the Democratic Party be responsive to us. Will any of the parties be responsible to us . Seen how the criminal Justice System has devastated our community and exploited our community, there is discontent and it is discontent that is rooted in Something Real and real experiences. Part of what i often say is that i do think there has been an effort, a concerted effort that has been documented by the Republican Party to exploit black pain. There has always been a white power structure that has been willing to go through whatever it needed to go through to exploit black pain because it does exist. These same people who have been creating commercials to really be able to tap into the frustrations and the anger and disappointment of black men, are the same people who are literally leading efforts. I can take trump, in particular. 80 have not received any constituent dollars. The second is around the discontent. The third piece is, often times, the reason we are doing the work we are doing is because people dont talk to. Oftentimes, folks are not going to listen to what are the concerns in the communities. I remember we were talking to young men in detroit who said they were not going to vote. We asked them, what is that you care about. I did not even have the opportunity to ask them to vote. They said, give me the paper and let me register. There is a constituency base. I do think we got caught up in the super voters. There is a group of folks not being spoken to. Their issues are not being engaged in. Alongt to bring everybody and really create a nation that is going to work for all of us, but we have to talk to those folks and address their core issues. We cant just write off them being with another party or whatever. We have to really understand what is that saying to us right now. What it is saying is that we have got to do more. Host lets go to dave calling from clarksville, tennessee on the republican line. Caller hello. Your guess was just talking about racism. Did you know the late supreme hired 160 lawrgb clerks and only one was black. Enough said. Im glad he said that because out of all of the judges. Donald trump selected, he did not select not a single black person. Not one. Host lets go to pollock calling from washington, d. C. Paula. Caller i would like to thank you for your work, your hard ink and being diligent getting us through this election. The one thing i would like to say is that it in hindsight we are still looking at it, but i feel like it is disheartening votedthat so many people for a man like donald trump the second time around. The first time, you kind of accepted that because even though most people knew who he want to give anyone a fresh start in any endeavor, especially if you are loyal to your country. Time, im not understanding how people, especially people of color, could vote for a candidate such as donald trump. I just wanted to hear your thoughts on that. On how youto speak the youngerto voters because they were disengaged in 2016 obviously. Just to speak on that. I will take the comment offline. Thank you. Guest thank you so much for that question. Part of the problem we are going to have to overcome is we are going to have to get out of boxes and labels even when people try to label me. When i say i want my Voting Rights, that is not a liberal issue. I want my Voting Rights. Youhere is a white male, wanting your Voting Rights is not considered liberal. If i want quality education, that is not a liberal agenda. I work in this country and pay my taxes, i should have access to the same thing everybody else has. I am raising that because i think what often happens is we have this political paradigm we are looking at politics and peoples lives as either the red team or blue team. The bottom line is, i am on the Humanity Team and all human beings should have quality education. If they go to work, they should be able to get paid a fair wage for the work. They should really be able to benefit from the fruits of their labor. I am raising this because i think all of us have been held hostage within this context of what is partisan. If you are on this team, you have to find what is wrong with the other team instead of being honest about what is right and wrong. That is something that has been done that is just wrong. It does not matter whether you are democrat or republican. I am saying this because i love humanity. I am a human being, and any time someone is putting little children in cages, something is fundamentally wrong with that. I dont care what label you put on me, i will never be ok with that. Im not ok with standing by someone that there are women who came over here seeking asylum and were given hysterectomies because they had a different color passport. That is a humanity issue. I say we have to ship this whole shift this whole paradigm to what if the what if we voted for this phrase for the love of humanity. Supportingi was policy for the love of humanity. What would that look like . We have to be courageous. Fundamentally, what i think is happening in this country and where we are right now, is we all have been complicit. The republicans can blame the democrats all day and the democrats can blame republicans is day, but the bottom line if covid19 didnt show us anything else, it is that we are interconnected. On some level, what i do will impact you and what you do will impact me. Im hoping we will rise above where we are now and get to the place where we can move beyond these boxes of partisanship and really focus on making decisions and supporting policies that are literally going to advance humanity, not just a limited agenda for a limited amount of people. What is so wrong with everybody having health care . What is so bad about people having access to quality education . I am raising this because i think sometimes we get caught up in these boxes that we are responding to what is liberal or what is conservative, what is read and what is blue. I am human. That is i make what i make all of my decisions on. I love humanity. When im voting for people, im voting based on who i think is actually going to give humanity a chance, the most people, the opportunity to really be able to live life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As we were talking to young folks, what i think happened this time is that we had young people on our team. We were supporting young people. , andork in pennsylvania pennsylvania was a key election this cycle, was led by a young woman who was actually under the age of 30. The women who ran our work in alabama, under the age of 30. The woman who ran our work in louisiana, under the age of 30. Host unfortunately, we are out of time. I really appreciate you coming on. We would like to thank Latosha Brown for being with us today. We appreciate your time. Thank you so much. Host we are going to go back to our opening question for the final of the show. Do you support or oppose masked mandates . We will take a few moments and be right back. Cspan2 has on taught nonfiction books and authors every weekend. Host we are back and we want to know what you think about mask mandates in your state and around the country. We are going to open up our regular lines for this conversation. That means democrats, republicans, independents. We are always reading on social media on twitter and facebook. Again, the coronavirus is not only affecting people outside of government, it is also affecting people in government. Ahe Washington Post has story talking about how coronavirus is ravaging the secret service. I will read a couple of paragraphs. More than 130 secret Service Officers who help protect the white house and president when he travels, have recently been ordered to isolate or quarantine because they tested positive for the coronavirus or had close contact with infected coworkers according to three people familiar with agency staffing. The spread of the coronavirus, which has sidelined roughly 10 of the agencys Core Security Team is believed to be partly linked to Campaign Rallies that President Trump held in the weeks before the november 3 whotion according to people spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the situation. In all, roughly 300 secret Service Officers or agents have had to isolate or quarantine since march because they were infected or exposed to infected colleagues according to two people with knowledge of the figures. Once again, there are 34 states right now and the District Of Columbia that are mandating masks around the country. What is your state doing and what do you think about it . Lets go to ronnie calling from Silver Spring, maryland on the democratic line. Maskedmarilyn has a mandate because that is where i live as well. What are you seeing in Silver Spring . Caller i am seeing that people are Wearing Masks. I support anything that is going help people get healthy. Virus is growing. The virus is not going to go away. We have to learn how to live with it. I think with the scientists are saying, they need to get control over a health plan that is going just like when hiv was here. We had to work on what the health plan would be. I think people need to stop and realize not only are they putting themselves in danger, but they are putting everyone else around them in danger. It is time for people to wake up and say, i want america back as a safe environment. If that means we have to wear a mask, that means we wear our mask. Host you live in Silver Spring, which is right outside a Major College town, college park, where the university of maryland is. I know they made an announcement recently that they were going to do the rest of the semester online, which really affects the cities and towns around the universities because of the coronavirus. Made theink maryland right choice going to all virtual classes to try to keep the coronavirus from spreading . Yes, i currently work at Montgomery College and we are currently on digital learning. I think that for right now, since we dont understand that is theoing on, best place for us to be so that we are not in direct contact with people. In this area that i live in, people are trying to comply. I really appreciate that we are americans inher as looking at a little thing like wearing a mask can help five people not get the virus. A mask is not something difficult to do. If we can do that in order to get a place where the scientists can come up with a plan for us to learn to live with this virus, we will be ahead. Callingts go to mayme from mckeesport, pennsylvania on the republican line. Good morning. Caller good morning, how are you . Host just fine. Go ahead. Caller i think the first thing we have to realize is that god has a hand in this. He could stop this thing if he wanted to. We dont know. We have turned our back on him. Everything that we do anymore is against what the bible says. I definitely believe in god and in his word. When we go against him, we open ourselves up to any kind of a pandemic or whatever. Whatever we want to do anymore, we are doing it, but if we would turn back to him, i believe that all of this stuff would be wiped out. I dont think he brought this pandemic. I dont know where his hand is in it, but i know he is the only one who could snap his fingers as he did in the old testament, he cant do now because he can do now because jesus gave us a way back. Host so what are you doing, are you Wearing Masks, isolating, not Wearing Masks . What are you doing to keep yourself safe . Iller im isolated because live in an assisted Living Community here in mckeesport. We have not had one death, not one. Son, who lives in hidden valley, he just lost his sister and his brotherinlaw within a week from this pandemic. But they werehy, in the hospital in monroeville, and then they separated and put one here and one in monroeville. Both of them passed away. I dont know many more people personally that have passed away, but here, where we live, we are only permitted to go out fore are going to a doctor an appointment. The people that come into work have to have a mask on, and they also have to do a Temperature Check once they come in. We have been kept pretty clean. Host lets go to wanda calling from michigan on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller hi. Masks. Rt a mandate for i thinki think people are selfin they dont wear one. They need to quit puffing their chest out and claiming, it is against my rights. It is my right not to catch this disease. I am very angry when i go in a store and find the cashiers without a mask or people walking mask. Without a in michigan, it is like a war about the mask. People need to grow up and get over caller providing common sense by providing those masks. Host in missouri, there is no statewide mask mandate while certain cities like kansas city and st. Louis have enacted their own mask mandate. Do you think there should be a statewide mask mandate in missouri . The governor does not want to make a mandate for masks. He wants to have a balanced approach. How do you enforce it . Caller i dont know how to do it without provoking some peoples really wrap rash actions, which scares me more than the disease. Callingts go to chuck from scottsdale, arizona on the republican line. Good morning. Caller good morning to you. I love these democrat socialists who say Law Enforcement when they want to defund the police. Let me tell you exactly what happens. You have your lockdown like crazy, mask and everything, and it all came back. This is in the air, this is circulating. If you want to wear a mask and you think that is going to help you, because you can get the disease through your eyes. There is a lot of ways covid can get into a person. I am saying mandate is not going to work. These stores right now are having a mask going into a store or whatever. If you are in wyoming in the middle of nowhere, you are not having a mask on. It has got to be common sense here. This is a very serious situation with this being airborne. Host you are from arizona. There is no mandate in arizona. Looking at the numbers from johns hopkins, you can see the cases spiked back in july, but the numbers are going back up in arizona. How do you stop the spread of coronavirus in arizona . Caller pretty much, what you have to do is there is a lot of gatherings going on. In our neighborhood, they just had a party of 15 people. , i cant enforce it, but i said, do you really want 15 people at your house . They all wore masks . Way. This is a problem, getting human beings to understand that gatherings, and you are with people for more than an hour, you have a problem. Going to bars and i realize it is difficult for a lot of people, but you go in and drink and get out. You cant be gathering for hours and hours. That is where the problem really is. People have to segregate themselves a little bit more without a mask. Just dont stay close to somebody. That is how i feel. Seem like youre advocating social responsibility and individual responsibility. What happens when people dont take individual responsibility and continue to spread the coronavirus . What do you do then . There is just not going to be a force for that. We have 320 5 Million People in 325 Million People in this country. It is like blowing smoke in your face at a store. You can get lug cancer from that later on lung cancer from that later on, too, but we still have cigarettes. Without fast food and heart disease, we can cut it down to 85 , but they still have it. There are things in life to live with. Vaccine, locking down people with masks, not going to work. Host lets go to some of our social media followers and see what they have to say about mask mandates. Here is one text that says, masks are nothing but a control measurement mechanism by totalitarian regimes. Masks do not work. Says, dont that wear a seatbelt if you dont want to, but dont undo mine. Here is another text that says, i am in rural texas and i dont believe we should have a statewide mandate of any kind. Our local medical Community Leaders keep us updated, and i believe our city and county leaders know when a mask mandate would be appropriate. Our governor lives six hours from me in a big city. His perspective of covid19 is much different than mine. Im definitely against a federal mandate. I do wear a mask and i voted libertarian. Says, to thethat woman who claims god can instantly into the pandemic, the bible says god helps those who help themselves, so where the dam mask. Aother text that says, i am florida resident and im 24 years old and fully and by human atlee support a vehemently support a mask mandate. This is not a partisan issue, it is about protecting others in our communities. We need more compassion in this country. Lets go back to our phone lines and lets talk to deborah who is calling from clarksville, tennessee on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Host go ahead. Caller i am a supporter of the mask. Host why . Caller because it is safer. Host are you a supporter of a statewide mask mandate in tennessee . Caller it is statewide. Host do you support that idea of it being statewide because some people say only the local medical officials should be in charge of telling people whether they need to wear masks because obviously, it is nashville is not the same as memphis, memphis is not the same as knoxville, knoxville is not the same as clarksville. Instances, most people are Wearing Masks here, in most instances, even in those places you just named, they are Wearing Masks. Host so do you think that people who dont wear masks should face some type of punishment . Caller they will get their punishment when they get sick. Host ok. Texas onto stafford, the independent line. Good morning. Are you there . Caller yes, i am. Can you hear me . Host yes, go ahead. Caller i am opposed to a mask mandate. Support people Wearing Masks, however, the lack of information that we received from the media, specifically, it is disturbing. Mask only certain masks work. Every mask does not work. I know the n95 masks were supposed to be sufficient, but 90 of the people Walking Around do not have the quality masks that stop a virus. We never seem to be concerned it could be just as deadly. I dont understand the fear. Most people are just watching the news and really dont know what to do. Unfortunately, the people responsible for informing us the media is not necessarily responsible for informing us. We are responsible for informing us. Us andt paid to inform they know that they have taken over the responsibility of informing most people and they just dont they dont inform us, but they take the advantage of making us scared. Had released a new report only four days ago. They are bringing up some of the issues you are talking about and i want to read to you from the cdc. This is from the cdc talking about masks because like you, a lot of others are confused about what masks work and what masks dont. Blockedlayer cloth mask release of a held respiratory particles along with microorganisms these particles carry. Macks can also masks can also block the exhalation of particles. Multilayer cloth masks can block fine 70 of these particles and droplets and limit the forward spread of those that are not captured. Upwards of 80 blockage has been achieved on human experiments that have measured blocking of all respiratory droplets with cost masks in some studies performing on par with surgical masks as barriers for certain source control. Once again, on tuesday, apparently, the cdc says multilayer cloth masks actually do work as well as the surgical mask we were all worried about finding earlier this year. Does that change your mind, anything about masks . Beginning ie think of masks as actually a good idea to wear even way before the coronavirus came. We should wear gloves and masks everywhere we go, to be honest with you. That is real. Weeel like we have not are not thinking that far. There is nobody in our bathrooms telling us to wash our hands. There is nobody making sure you wash your hands. There is nobody telling us that duramax is not really working the way people think it is because it gets rid of all the germs, even the good ones. Not against masks, im not a radical. I think your own personal responsibility is what is going to keep you either healthy or sick at the end of the day. Host lets go to kathleen calling from amarillo, texas on the republican line. Good morning. Caller hi. I would just like to say thank you to the colors before me. They all had sent callers before me. They all had something great to say. I did not support masks, but my sisters grandchild got covid, and they have a child in the house that has an immune system that cant support this disease. She was taken out of the home. This all becomes an extent on the parents, on the family. My sister is an emotional wreck. Host when you say becomes an expense, tell me what you are talking about. Caller by having to put the other daughter out of the house, they have to pay for where she she has to gog, to the doctors. They are in the Surface Service and the husband is deployed, so he is not able to help. This is all on my sisters daughter. Base ordoes she live on off base . Host host does she live on base or off base . Caller she lives on base. Host we have been talking a lot about the problem of mask mandates. What is the solution . What do you think should be the solution . Caller i did like what the guy said about the thicker mask. Im going to exchange mine out in the car for a thicker mask today. Host right. Calling from ian pennsylvania on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. Host go ahead. You are on. Caller i think it is a matter of life or death. I think you should wear the mask. Host how do you enforce it or should you enforce it to people who dont believe the mask is going to work . Caller yes, i do. I think it should be enforced because it is putting their lives at risk. Host how do you enforce it . Do you send the police after them, Health Officials after them . Is it just a gentle reminder from other people who are Wearing Masks . How do you enforce it . Caller i just think they should be fined. Host a monetary fine . Caller yeah. To get itke twice into their heads that it is putting peoples lives at risk. Host lets talk to bill calling from northbrook, illinois on the independent line. Caller caller good morning. Good morning. Inas particularly interested rashards comments. I would like to add on to some of the things he said. You wonder how these tests were done. A viral particle is like two microns. There is no way that a cloth impairs a two macron particle. Second thing, once a mask becomes moist, the transmission of both bacteria and virus are different. It has been known with surgical masks, that after an hour, even bacteria, which was substantially larger, past through them. You wonder if some of the studies were done or should have plate,ne with a whole six feet, 10 feet in front. My last comment is that people have to remember that it is in urine in your colon and your urine. Masks, i think get people a false sense of security. Comments andut out then have retracted them about aerosol dispersion of the virus. This is far more complicated than just wearing a mask. The cdc put out a scientific report just on tuesday that brings up some of the things you are talking about. Im going to read this sentence to you. Maskses show that cloth reduce exposure to droplets including the filtration of find drop was in particles less than 10 microns. Multiple layers of cloth with high thread count have demonstrated superior performance compared to single layers of cloth with lower thread count, in some cases filtering nearly 50 of fine particles less than one micron. Micron. Do you think they are wrong . Caller i would say you are talking about two microns. I would say you have to see the study. In other words, after you have worn your mask and it is moist. Is it still as effective . To ask the question that if it is in your colon, that is one question. My last comment is this. What happens if we all start stop wearing our masks . Why are we having this tremendous resurgence in different parts of the country . I think he would have to Say Something with temperature and humidity is changing, and it is not just the fact that we have stopped Wearing Masks. Host you could probably say also that in some areas of the country, they never wear in the first place. Caller i live near chicago and store that ivery go in, it is mandated. Im not seeing people necessarily Walking Around the neighborhood wearing a mask, but every store that i go in, 100 of the people are Wearing Masks. Have seen no behavior difference, and yet, i am seeing a big spike in cases that i dont think masks has changed. Host i want to remind everyone that coming up at noon today, cspan will be showing live the rally for President Trump here in washington, d. C. Once again, you can see it live here on cspan today. Both protesters and counterprotesters, which will start once again today here at noon eastern time. You can watch it here on cspan. Lets get a few more calls in before the top of the hour. Lets start with eric calling from new york on the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. An honor and privilege to participate in our conversation on cspan. It is a very interesting world we live in. Customized newsfeeds telling us this and that. Masks should be a point of unity instead of something that is being used and has been used by certain people in leadership positions to divide us. Fall, uniteded we we stand. Dontl down dead if we get with the program. Thiss information misinformation starts to talk about details that are really in the purview of the frontiers of science as we begin to learn the various attributes of this novel coronavirus. To play around with these unknowns and use them for political gain is criminal, in my estimation. Masks should be a point of unity, that i care about my people and i care about your people, and therefore, i wear a mask and so do you and i sure do appreciate it. When i go about my daily day, i wear knit gloves and i change them fairly regularly. I dont walk around feeling like i am making a statement at all. It has got nothing to do with making a statement. In this onceudence in a century kind of transmissible pandemic, such as we have. Host lets talk to maria calling from fairfax, virginia on the independent line. Good morning. Caller i do believe in masks 100 . I feel like everybody should be wearing a mask. Im very blessed to live in virginia because we have the governor in the country handling the coronavirus very well. He even made new restrictions children 10 and older should wear masks now to children five and older. Northern virginia is totally different than the rest of the state. People are civilized here. You see a lot of times [indiscernible] people refuse to wear a mask. I believe it should be punished if they dont enforce the law, because this is the most highly contagious fighters ever virus ever. Host lets go to tom calling from baltimore. Caller thank you very much for letting me exercise my First Amendment rights. I would like to say cobit is interesting because it is out of sight, out of mind. Somebody gets sick, they go to hospital. If they live through it, they come out and recover, otherwise, they are dead and nobody sees them. If covid caused sores on somebodys face down the street, people would wear a mask without any mandate. Thank you. Host lets go to margaret cobbling from massachusetts on the republican line. Caller thank you so much for letting me voice my thoughts. Last week, our wonderful governor in massachusetts said that anybody who was not wearing , the fine went all the way up to 1000 if they continually did not wear their mask. Im grateful to that because after the first horrible spiking, i saw the people on the beaches of florida, they did not listen or anything to the horrors going on with this virus. Sure enough, it got worse and worse. The people dont obey. Your own health and the health of your neighbor. Just am so grateful we got a good governor that is going to fine us. When there is money concerned, like in the seatbelts also, that they give them a ticket or something, then they will wear them. You see that if the whole have torts being pay money, you will see everybody with a seatbelt and everybody will feel a lot better in this country. Host lets go to rodney calling from greenbelt, maryland on the independent line. Caller thank you, i appreciate it. I just want to say that i completely support a mask mandate. Biden that when president comes in, he makes a nationwide because i live in Prince Georges County here. Just yesterday, you are talking about how we are going to enforce this. Just yesterday, the county executive here shut down one or two hotels, large hotels that were allowing large parties to occur there. And thathit someone, is hitting them in their pocketbook, that is going to make them change their mind. Host we would like to thank all of our callers, guests and viewers for sticking with us through cspan washington journal this morning. The police have a have been long collecting their data and information on people they have contact with. What is happening nows police are collecting this information on people who do not have direct criminal justice contact. Part of that has to do with this variety component of the three vs a big data, that they are purchasing information from company, using tools like automatic license plate readers where you dont have to get pulled over for the police for your data to be put into your system their system for example. So that information is also being used. Sarah brain, sunday night on q a. Ans you and a the Supreme Court heard a consolidated case, a constitutionality on the Affordable Care act.
