The focus of for our office and for the county election officials, for now, remains on making sure every legal vote is counted and recorded accurately. As we are closing in on a final count, we can begin to look toward our next steps. With a margin that small, there will be a recount in georgia. Electionin our obviously goes far beyond georges borders. Georgias borders. The final tally in georgia has huge implications for the entire country. The stakes are high and emotions are high on all sides. We will not let those debates distract us from our work. We will get it right. We will defend the integrity of our elections. In some states, there are complaints about monitors not being allowed to watch the count. In georgia, this process is and will remain open and transparent to monitors. If any member of the public raises legitimate concerns, we will investigate those. We are committed to doing everything and anything to maintaining trust in our elections process for every georgian regardless of partisan preference. Thank you very much. We are going to go over the details again on where we stand on the vote counts. There have been some changes overnight and even some when we walked in the front door of the office to the front of the cameras today. Wed to see everybody here as close in on a final tally. The secretary Just Announced a particular set of numbers that actually went down from the time we walked the door to hear. Our new total we are aware of is 4,169. They are in a handful of counties. In cherokee county, there are 150 ballots that they did not upload. They had to rescan and upload those today. 75 in cobb county. 444 in floyd county. Approximately 3500 in Gwinnett County as we went through the reconciliation process versus what they had to newly scan. I think that is it. A couple of things. Lawrence county, the 1679 votes we had yesterday, we are basing those on the absentee ballot differences. When they did their reconciliation process on it, they discovered they had accidentally uploaded those into their election day totals. The totals will not change, but the vote type will change they make that change today. Outside of that, we dont have any other numbers we are aware of. Weant to remind everyone, have processes through today for absentee ballots, verification processes for provisional ballots, and we can still get military or you will, military ballots if they were postmarked by election day. The hands of the collections officials now other than maybe the military wants. I can assure you ones. I can assure you there are teams of twentysomethings finding those people with absentee ballots secure and going through the process county by county. Just to preempt a question, are we seeing any widespread fraud or anything that makes us question the outcome of the election . We are not seeing any widespread irregularities or widespread. We are investigating any credible accusation with any real evidence behind it. Let me tell you one thing. When you have a narrow margin, little small things can make a difference. Everything is going to have to be investigated to protect the integrity of the vote. Our office intends to do that like i said, if you get a wide margin, it doesnt. Matter as much a narrow margin, it does. We are looking at a margin of less than a high school. It is an important thing to protect the integrity of the selection from all sides from this election. Reporter with the margin we have and the certainty of a recount, are we going to know who won the presidency in georgia by the end of november . With the timeline we have laid out lets go through the timeline again. We should be able to know by the end of november because we have a middecember deadline. The one thing that is always going to be unknowable and n known is lawsuits. When a judge tells us to do something a certain way, we are going to have to do that and let the Legal Process work its way out. Given the laws we have now in the situation and posture we are in today, today is the last day to cure all of those absentee ballots. Military and overseas in and verify the provisionals. Then, you have a situation where the counties need to certify their elections. They take that and give us a bunch of paperwork and make sure they have everything right. Trust me, these people work very hard at it. They are all very tired, but we have worked with them very diligently to get that in as fast as we can because state certification can come only after we do our risk limiting audit. That is going to be the first time states are doing it. That happens, and then we are going to have the state certification. The hour bound of that is november 20. Our hope is to move that earlier. At that point, whomever comes in second, either one of them, whoever is in second place can request a recount if it is within half a percent. Orter again, week [indiscernible] most interpretations of the law, a recount cannot be requested until the election is certified. Reporter and that would take about five days . We have no way of knowing right now. We are hoping it would be a week, but we have no way of knowing that. Reporter there are a lot of concerns from people outside of georgia, but also in georgia that the vote count is secure and accurate [indiscernible] that poll workers are doing their job properly. What can you say about how poll workers and Elections Officials and directors are going to make sure that everything is fair and accurate . We have 159 election directors, thousands of poll workers, hundreds of volunteers under decay and panels. Occasion on june panels. There is reconciliations, there is paperwork on top of paperwork. We know how many ballots there are. Of the things we know from wednesday night on, we knew the basic amount of ballots there. With the slight moving target of the military coming in, absentee ballots being cures and the potential for provisionals, because those are all essentially unknowable. People asked the question why cant you know how many you have, because it is impossible because the law allows these things to be done to protect the ballots of those we want to make sure get the vote. In general and specifically, this office has worked very hard to allow for notifications to be immediately sent out for ballots that are received toward the end of the process that need to be cured. People talk about the three day chore process on this. If that is not the case, if you t your ballot in early, our office in the counties have many safeguards and guardrails built up to ensure the integrity of the vote. Reporter [indiscernible] can you talk a little bit more about the investigation [indiscernible] to talk aboutng ongoing investigations at this time. Harvesting votes for a recount would be difficult because you already have the outward edge of what the recount shows. Reporter [indiscernible] can you clarify to the people watching what exactly you referred [indiscernible] im not going to try to get into the president s actual mindset on that because there are republicans involved in democrats involved. There are republican election directors, democrat election directors. The secretary is a republican, i am a republican. I dont make any bones about that. I have suddenly had a lot of people look at my twitter feed and linkedin. We have people who have partisan beliefs, but the job of elections directors in this process is to count every legal vote, follow the law and ensure every legal vote is counted and the will of the voters is met. Reporter [indiscernible] we have no way of knowing. The one thing people have asked me is how many. I dont know. Be more than zero and less than 8900. [indiscernible] we cant know because they are in the post office. Reporter [indiscernible] im not aware of any at this time. Reporter [indiscernible] heres the situation. Done befores to be there is a recount anyways. To clear up one thing, the law in georgia is that the candidates must be within half a percent of each other in order to have a recount. Im hearing speculation about a recount in the United States senate race involving a senator from purdue. With thein is so wide amount of ballots out right now, there is no way the two of them could get to it would only be for the president. Reporter [indiscernible] you are going to let me get into my fun geek time to get into the rules when we passed this law. This is the way it is going to work. As i mentioned yesterday, the secretary director we procured, the highcapacity highspeed scanners will be used at the Central Offices for this recount. We are going to take a deck of ballots and we are going to have this hand counted going by what is written on the human readable portion of that or the readable portion of that. We will then run those through the scanners and they ought to match. Once we validate that that scanner is scanning properly, we will be scanning every single ballot again on the proper scanners. We are making estimates of time. We dont know. Im hoping there is some time our election workers will get some sleep because it is going to be a high stress thing. That is the essential outline of how it works. That is the basics. [indiscernible] are aware thate there is a couple of places we heard about it potentially happening. We dont know exactly why yet. It could be a simple thing as on the pole pad it asks for date of birth and they could have been looking at the wrong person and not realized it immediately. There can be errors, but we are looking into it with the vendor to see if there is anything that could be discovered about why that might have happened. You again . Reporter [indiscernible] mr. Sterling i do not right now. We are trying to get that, but we are trying to leave the elections directors and officials to their actual counts. Reporter [indiscernible] mr. Sterling here is the reality. I think the ballots that are here today will probably be done today or tonight. Remember, close of business means there is stuff coming in at close of business. We dont know the volume of those or where they are going to be. They could have been exhausted and how to get the mail after that. There is no way of knowing exactly. Iensense i anticipate we should get close to final on saturday, people going through damaged ballots to make sure they get them copied and duplicate it properly and scanned. It will be probably this weekend. Ifmally, it wouldnt matter the difference wasnt 1000 votes. Reporter [indiscernible] no, so nong conversation. Weer you mentioned are hearing a lot about the counting of balance in georgia. Is this a county problem or simply a matter of the margin, the fact that we have so many so close . Mr. Sterling there are two things in here. I know many people seem to forget that we were in the middle of a pandemic. Georgia, historically has about 5 absentees. This time, it was close to one third. They have never had to handle this volume of paperwork before. They are also having to handle the ballot custody rules. Extra things we have never had to deal with before. I think we are going to make tshirts that say i survived the 2020 election. It is mainly questions on volume. Reporter [indiscernible] reiterate, do you think that all of the ballots will be counted up by the end of the weekend . Mr. Sterling again, we cant know what is happening in all counties. We are the the only state with more counties than us is texas. We anticipate most will be. They can find some things, that is why you have certification to get that that final number to that final number so that we can move to what is likely a recount called by either one of the second place candidate. Reporter is there a county that is still counting quite a bit more either equipment or Technical Assistance throughout this week . Mr. Sterling in chatham county, they wanted to have one more dicationn adju server and that was applied. Reporter [indiscernible] 17,000. Ling about those 17,000 are already included in the accounts we have. Just one more time for clarity, [indiscernible] mr. Sterling you just want to see me get that computer back out again. Give me a second. Reporter [indiscernible] mr. Sterling correct, except for there are 400 election day ballots included in the Gwinnett County totals. Start from the top. Cherokee, 150. Cobb county, 75. Floyd county, 444. Gwinnett county approximately 4500. 4169. Total of anybody have anything else . Reporter [indiscernible] mr. Sterling not that i am aware of. Im going to put some clarity to this, it was not a water main break. What it was was during the offseason and pandemic, they shut off the toilets. They were turned off and there was a leak that got around one of the edges of the shut off valves. Like wee, it is just said, we got hit with a hurricane, im going to have water leak added to the tshirt. Anything else . Thank you. Reporter [indiscernible] i really couldnt say right now. There is different investigations. You do phone calls to make sure there is credibility. Im not going to go through that. We are getting stuff. If you look on facebook and twitter, there are millions of problems all around the country. If someone has a critical complaint and have some kind of trail to an evidence, they can give our office a call. If they are in another state, give your state office a call because we want to make sure we protect integrity of the ballot because that is the only way youre going to build faith back in the system that the outcome is correct.
