A couple other tweets from democrats, the democrat from virginia saying we wear masks for the protection of others. Thats what the mask is for. Removing a mask when you know you have this deadly disease means you are knowingly exposing others to the risk of infection, severe illness or death. Also showing the moment President Trump removed his mask. Congressman Lloyd Doggett said minimizing the severity of this is deeply dangerous. Every reason to fear covid19 and prepare accordingly rather than continue claiming its no big deal. Here are some of the reaction from political media. From the huffington post, their headline on the president s return to the white house, madness, mask lists, unconscionable west wing outbreak. To the conservative newspapers as well, there is the atlantic story as well. The story about the folks who work inside the white house. And this from newsmax, trumps what house return delights supporters. Some critics see kos for continuing concern. Want to hear your reaction asking you how coronavirus coronavirus change your view of covid19 caller i had covid19. You have to be warranty and 14 days. I had the sweats at night. I had a hard time breathing. It took me almost a month to be able to walk more than 200 feet. I was exhausted, i had to sit down. And i lost a friend that was 35 years old and hes telling everybody dont be scared of the virus. I lost a friend in florida that is 45 years old. Im 75. Im scared of the virus. I wear a mask everywhere i go. I think hes a fool taking off that mask. I think hes infecting more people in that white house and super spreaders every day. He goes to the rallies without a mask. Hes acting like a little child. That wasnt showing bravery. These trying to take insurance away from everybody. We are not going to get that kind of care. Could you get that kind of care at walter reed and have all your bills paid . I think its ridiculous. I think he act like a child. Im sorry for the 210,000 people that have died. He didnt take care of the virus from the beginning. Robert woodward, its five times worse than the flu. Are you there . Host yes sir. Stan talks about more infections at the white house. Hours before the president returned to the white house, his press secretary announced that she had tested positive for coronavirus as did two members of her pristine. Leastng the number two at 12 who have been at the white house and have since tested positive. Taking your calls and thoughts this morning. Luis is next out of colorado springs. Caller just listening this morning, i had a couple of thoughts, but i would like to Say Something positive if i could. Trump has made promises and he has kept them. Hes bringing our troops home from these endless wars. He has lowered our taxes. He gave the veteran the choice program. So they can get health care at any dr. Doctor. He set up opportunity zones in inner cities to help minorities so they can have jobs and good incomes and he has built our military up that was depleted by the previous administration. Host bring us to this coronavirus case. Does the case change your view of the disease . Caller no. Hes the leader of the free world and my family think hes doing the right thing. He cant just sit in his basement. He has a job to do and he needs to go out. This is election time of the year. Reading, ments you were my wife had to turn the tv off now at night. She cant even watch the local news because the media is so hateful towards trump and now the next debate, the moderator is one of your comrades, steve scully, who should recuse himself. He worked for biden in the senate and he is a good friend of biden. Host he interned as a freshman in college some 42 years ago for a few weeks in the biden office for credit, not for pay. Have you watched steve scully . Do you watch him on this program . Reason tor given you believe that he is biased . You asked that. If people would just go back at sunday mornings when hes on the last five months, just use his words and his video of what he said and how he disparages trump. He usually has jeff mason on their who hates trump and hes ls from politico on their who all hate trump. He told the reporters, nobody is listening to you guys anymore because you are not talking about new. You cant just talk about news. Got to make up all these comments. Up the Washington Post every morning like its the gospel of luke. Host i would encourage people to go back and watch steve scully. And see for yourself if you think hes biased. Thats all we can ask you to do. Lakeland, ext in florida. A democrat. Good morning. Caller good morning. I dont believe trump never had the virus in the first place. This is all a production that was made up in the white house. Consider the fact that he wanted to change the news cycle. They were talking about his terrible debate, his taxes, the fact he didnt denounce white supremacy. So he came up with this plan and he was going to use covid to his advantage. He went to walter reed. All this pretending about he got medical treatment and the doctor on saturday couldnt get his lies straight when he was talking to the press. If you are going to quarantine for two weeks, why would they let him back in the white house after three days. Host if that were the case, you think this has been an advantageous news cycle for the president for the last five days . Caller no. Hes been lying for four years. Why would i believe him now . Sympathyng to get the and compassion from undecided voters. A 75yearold man who is a beast, bad diet beat covid in three days. Nobody believes that. This guy has been lying for four years. Why would i believe hes got covid . The line for those who have had covid out of staten island. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. I have had the covid19 virus and i was contact tracer. Ive been in my home approximately eight weeks, ladies and gentlemen. And the only symptom i had was loss of taste and smell. But i knew i wanted to take responsibility. I live with other people in my home. Room quarantined in a which thank goodness had a bathroom. My family did not contact me at did not contact me at all, and thankfully no one in my home had it. For the president of the United States to go to walter reed where none of us can go, we cant get this kind of health care. Hes in court now trying to get Health Care Away from people. He went to the best hospital ever. He got the greatest health care ever. He even stated. And then for him to tell the American People, dont worry about it. Do not be afraid of covid. Go out and continue your life. Its such an insult, cspan. Its such an insult, america. People who211,000 died from covid. What is going on . For him to tell everyone im just going to leave walter reed . Did you see him walk up the stairs . That man could not breathe. Elizabeth talking about how she was contact tracer in new york. Some information about the out break at the white house. Cdc has readied a team of investigators but hasnt been asked by the white house to help track down related infections since the president announced that he and the first lady tested positive for coronavirus. The white house says its medical unit is conducting its own contact facing and relying on internal resources to investigate the ripple effects according to the wall street journal. Out of maine, independent. Good morning. Caller morning. I would like to try something a little different. I would like to call for a show of hands which i know wont work on tv but i would like to have a show of hands. Everyone raise your hand if you would prefer to be living in an empire. I suspect there would be very few hands on that. Preference asl well as i think the minuteman at the concord ridge and all our and our founders, farmers, framers of the constitution, i think we would all agree with my posture which is that weve already had an asshole full of empire. Next inersten is severna park, maryland. Caller first time caller. I just want to thank cspan for keeping the American People in touch with the pulse of the nation. Watching him ascend the scary case staircase to the white house and dramatically peel off his mask was probably one of the most chilling things ive seen. And is in the past three half years where daily we are confronted with things that are shocking and appalling and i feel as though once again this president and his administration has really demonstrated to the American People that the rules do not apply to them in any way and at expense to all of us. I think its very sad. Host you think President Trump should participate in that debate next week . Caller i think if he tests negative for covid19, with extraordinary precautions for all. Every member of the audience should have a mask on including every member of the republican delegation and i think he should follow the rules that he agreed to prior to the debate. Participated in his own town hall debate sponsored by nbc news. They aired it last night. Heres a little bit of what joe biden said when it came to President Trump and coronavirus. I would hope that the president having gone through woulde went through communicate the right lesson to the American People. Masks matter. It matters, it saves lives, it prevents the spread of the disease. Social distancing. Instead of talking about, the only thing i heard was one of the tweets saying dont be so concerned about all this essentially. To be concerned about. 210,000 people have died. Peoplee about a thousand a day getting the coronavirus. Its a great concern. I hope no one walks away with the message thinking that its not a problem. Its a serious problem. We have 4 of the population and 20 of the dead. Host joe biden last night at the nbc news town hall debate. On next weeks debate about the idea of postponing that debate. In usa today, 59 percent of americans say the debate should be postponed until President Trump recovered from the virus. 65 including nine in 10 democrats and five in 10 republicans say if trump had taken coronavirus more seriously , he probably would not have been infected. Slightly more said that President Trump has been telling the country the truth about the pandemic. Americans disapprove of how trump has handled the coronavirus outbreak. Is jerry out of huntington beach, california. Caller first time caller from maryland. I dont think im going to be as articulate as she was, but i want to say that trump is so full of himself that its almost painful to watch. Now all of a sudden hes trying to calm himself off as a leader. Where was the leadership when the virus first came to america . What did he do . What did he try to do . He tried to downplay it. Now we have this mess that could have been handled differently. May the outcome would have in the same, but there wasnt any effort on his part. His supporters that always touted his handling of the economy as why they like him, what did he do . He gave tax cuts away. The deficit went sky high. Even the republican economists say youd have to have a growth rate of five to 6 and thats never going to happen in america again and he knew this. He just lowered the taxes and ran the deficit up and now they think hes this great economic genius. The whole thing is just disgusting to watch. I will be glad when this guy is gone. Host this is anton in florida. Republican. Good morning. Caller i just wanted to call in. For me personally, it was a hoax from the very beginning. Because i have one of my Family Members working in the medical profession there. In my house i had a lot of people that did have covid and nothing really happened. Nothing. The death rate, every person who dies of course is horrible. But when you consider the death rate of this disease, it is ridiculous. 0. 3 . Host even after President Trumps diagnosis and his trip to the hospital for three days, you still think its a hoax . Caller i called it once and people were mad at me. Listeners. I listen to cspan forever. People actually died and its horrible of course. They have underlying conditions. People just dont live healthy. Im 78 years old. I havent been sick a single day in my life. I wouldnt know how to do it. You just live normally. I do everything. Something, i work in the hospitality industry. I discuss this with hundreds of doctors throughout the years. What causes sickness and disease is the drugs these people take in the United States and elsewhere. Studies have been done only about at the very most 50 . Host you think all 210,000 americans who have died were taking drugs and thats why they died . They didnt drugs, but they are not healthy. Host we will take your point. This is richard out of massachusetts. Independent. Caller this is just like another flu. , thehese deaths and corona 200,000 people. Everyone that dies now, they put it under the corona category. Im 76 years old. My friends are 74. One died of cancer and one died of virus pneumonia and they were both put in as covid. And there wife was pretty upset about it. Up, everyonewake on the bbc, only 6 of 200,000 corona virus debts was done by corona deaths was done by corona. Host does President Trumps case change anything in your mind about this virus and how deadly it is . Caller it isnt that deadly. Its only 1 of the people who get it die. Are not ineople who that good of health, john. I wish the best for everybody, but this is a big country. Blowing everything out of proportion. I hope you will have a good day and safe day. Thank you. Su in new jersey writing, i appreciate the message President Trump is trying to convey to the American People. Most people who contract it us todie its up to separate fact from fiction. Give us the facts so we can make good choices. The first lady is recovering at the white house, did not go to walter reed. Mohammed from wisconsin saying the cocktail of medicines delivered to president is not. Vailable to 99 of american only to the privileged being able to pay for Concierge Health care. If president s comments people were told not to be afraid of the bubonic plague or smallpox for the spanish flu or polio. Caller im calling because i had a Family Member who was diagnosed with covid. My grandmother. She was 94 years old when she was diagnosed. She had already been locked in a nursing home for several months before she contracted it from some of the staff. What your lastth color said where he said that only 6 of the deaths. I feel like the media such as yourself has been fear mongering people instead of saying that people who have died of covids is people who have died with covid. Grandmother, when she passed away she didnt have any symptoms. She didnt have a fever, she wasnt having a hard time breathing. I think she more died from depression and not being able to see her family and the poor care she was getting at this nursing home. We couldnt do anything about it and for slightly we cant even sue the nursing home. We have talked to several lawyers and they wont even touch it with a 10 foot pole because of the Laws Congress has been trying to pass with the heroes act and everything like that which will protect Nursing Homes from people suing them. Andpresident s actions words are inspiring because the survival rate is 99 for most people. I think we need to get back to work and let people know that most of the people who contract this will live from. Killedmore likely to be in a car accident on your way to work. If your kids get it, you more likely to have your kids die from shingles. Living in fear is not a way to live. President s said the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Hack scully is a political and if anyone listens to his words they would realize that. Thats jason in falls church, virginia. George is next. Republican. Caller this is the first time you have seen somebody get the hospital ando the take the medicines that the doctors hello . Host take the medicines that the doctors what . Caller that the doctors prescribe and he seems to do better, once he takes the medicine his fever goes away, his cough goes away. Then the democrats and the media decide that these doctors are bad doctors and they want to take the money away from the hospital where the president was at because they wanted to see the president die. This is ridiculous. Everybody doesnt die from this disease and this shows that. You see with the president how he contracted the disease and then he went and got medications for it. Homet better and hes gone and you dont see this a lot. Newspaperee in the and thefake media democrats, all you see is all the death. They want you to believe that all this is just a problem that the republicans put on you. But the republicans didnt do this. China did. You have to remember that. When you remember what happened and see if people can survive from it, the democrats and the fake media, they dont like it. Bert bringing up the president s medical Team Briefing the public outside of Walter Reed Medical Center before the president s release yesterday. Here is a little bit of the president s medical team and his attending physician who has been caring for him since the president was diagnosed with coronavirus. [video clip] we try to get patients home and out of the hospital as quickly as is safe and reasonable. Every day a patient stays in a hospital unnecessarily is a risk to themselves. Right now, there is nothing being done upstairs here that we cannot safely conduct downhome. I dont think we are there yet. Do you have concerns about potential worsening or reversal and what are your plans for addressing that if it were to happen . You are absolutely right. That is why we all remain cautiously optimistic and on a bit ofause we are in uncharted territory when it comes to a patient that received the therapies he has so early in the course. We are looking to this weekend. If we can get through to monday, with him remaining the same or improving, then we will all take that final deep sigh of relief. As i said, 24 7, world class medical care surrounding him down there. We are not going to miss anything they would have caught here. Host his attending physician yesterday outside of walter reed. Taking your phone calls this morning as we ask whether the president s coronavirus case has changed your view of covid19. One phone line for democrats, ts or independen independents and one for republicans. Also, a special line for those of you who have had covid19. We will put the numbers on the screen for you. As you are calling in, i want to keep you updated on some of the other news happening. We talked about this story yesterday on this program. Senator patrick to me, the twoterm republican, announcing yesterday he will retire from politics two years rebuffing overtures to run for pennsylvanias governor leaving a major hole for the republicans to fill in that seat. Mr. Toomey said he was fulfilling a personal term limits vision having served three terms in the house from 1999 to 2005 and winning two senate terms. Today, watching for any details that might come up when it comes to new Coronavirus Relief legislation. Fox news capitol hill d tweetingent cha yesterday evening that nancy pelosi was discovered discussing coronavirus talks with the treasury secretary, quoting her as saying they are having their conversations and are going to be talking again this morning. We will see if anything develops on that front. Back to your phone calls as we ask, has President Trumps coronavirus case changed review of covid19 . Bradley is in clear fork, West Virginia, a democrat. What do you think . Caller good morning. Sometimes, im kind of ashamed to be a democrat, all of this riffraff going on. Turn nbcing, i usually on when the today show first comes on and then i go to cspan real quick. This morning, the first thing savannah the president tears his mask off. What in gods name is the matter with the media . I watch to him, he folded it up and put it in his pocket for later use. I did not see nobody around him. It is a disgrace that these people get on tv or wherever and run the president of the United States down and bash him like they do. It is no wonder the countries in this condition it is in. One of my best friends had corona. He said it was like a severe cold. When you get your best medical treatment from the hospital where he is at, all president s got it, but then he what they want to bash in because he is in the best hospital in the United States. That is his hospital. That is not their hospital unless they are a veteran in bad shape. It is a disgrace they want to get out and bash him and everything else. It is like the debate. Both of them banded each other. It was horrible, but yet they both banded each other to death, beat each other to death. It is a disgrace they do this stuff and then they want to blame one politician. Thank you, cspan and have a good day, and these people need to wake up and get their heads out of their butts. Host you talk about the debate, are you going to be watching the Vice President ial debate this week . Caller i will probably glance at some of it. It is sickening when they bash each other like that. I will probably washed watch it. I hope they have a button that they can knock each other off. I know when somebody calls you a liar when you are president on tv of the United States, that is a disgrace to the country right there in my book. Host that is bradley in West Virginia on the Vice President ial debate. It is going to take place tomorrow night in utah. We are going to be talking more about it in our 9 00 hour this morning on the washington journal. Today, new Safety Measures being put in place, plexiglass barriers to boost safety when it comes to protections against coronavirus. Just before leaving for the debate in utah, Vice President mike pence spoke to reporters yesterday about president and his covid diagnosis. Heres a portion of what the Vice President had to say. [video clip] let me also take this opportunity to say how grateful we are, the expressions of concern and support and the prayers that millions of americans who have a member to our president and our wonderful first lady. We really believe it is emblematic of the love and the care and the compassion the American People have shown all of those that have been impacted by the coronavirus from the very beginning of this pandemic. As i said, when the president told me he was headed back to the white house, he told me to head to utah. We are looking very much forward to the Vice President ial debate. Stakes in this election have never been higher. The toys has never been clearer. I look forward to the opportunity to take our case to the American People for four more years for President Donald Trump in the white house. Host you can hear a lot more from Vice President mike pence and senator Kamala Harris tomorrow night at the Vice President ial debate live at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. You can watch it here on cspan , cspan. Org, listen to it on the free cspan radio app. Back to your phone calls asking how the president s coronavirus case has changed review of covid19, if at all. This is steve in anaheim, california on the line for those who have had covid. Caller good morning. I had this thing about last year. I was able to sit back and watch the entire impeachment hearings when you guys were on. Am i on . Host yes, sir. What did you think . Caller about the impeachment hearings or the flu . Host both. Caller im not going to get into the impeachment hearings because Everybody Knows my opinion of this president. As far as getting sick with this flu, i got the first stage of it. It knocked me out. First, it hit my eyes, then headaches, and my nose, my throat and my lungs. I was hitting every flu medicine they had out there and it was doing nothing to kill this thing. Eventually, i went down to the store and bought a bottle of vodka and orange juice and made my shot of orange juice and a shot of vodka to six ounces of orange juice for four days, and it killed the stupid thing. Host what do you think of the president s case and what do you think about the road ahead for him . Caller this is my problem with the president. When i got sick, i stayed home for two weeks. I didnt go out and spread this disease around. That is the problem youre having now is people who get sick start to get better, throw on a mask and i start wandering around and they keep spreading this thing. This thing is really contagious. That is what makes this thing so that. It is not that it is as bad as the hong kong flu of the 1970s and 1980s which stuck me in the hospital, but this thing is so easy to catch. Testing everybody like they did in south korea south korea has a population of 53 million people. They only have 300 deaths. What did they do . Before you could go into a public building, you had to have a temperature check. If you had a fever, they would come out and give you a test. If you are positive, they would come out and test you again. They isolated, quarantined and beat the host do you think we have the ability and will to do that . Caller we do, but not the financial means. This is going to cost money. This is what my party and the Democratic Party is avoiding telling people is they dont want to spend the money. What,bt right now is at 27 trillion . That is the problem. It is not the will, it is the money. Host a look at the money that has been spent when it comes to responding to coronavirus in the United States. Some 4 trillion. The Washington Post tracking where the money has gone. 2. 3 trillion to private business. Billion to individuals. The postal service, some 10 billion so far. Of 253 billion in government spending. 636 billion for medicine. If you want to check out that chart on todays Washington Post. Danielle, democrat, good morning. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call, first off. I wanted to just say that i work on a covid unit in baltimore. I have seen people from the age of 22 all the way up to 90 be intubated. I have seen them die by themselves. I have had Family Members call and cussed me out because they cannot come up and be with her family as they are living their last moments. Irresponsible and a slap in the face for the to actually go to the hospital which is fine, go get checked out. We dont want anything to happen, but how irresponsible to leave the hospital and do a joy ride to way that supporters when you are in an incubator. Detaileddents vehicles are designed to protect him from a chemical attack which means there is nothing going in or coming out. You have now subjected all of those secret Service Members to your contagious disease, not to mention, the way it is traveling through the white house. It is so disrespectful. It is such a slap in the face. The people that are his diehard supporters act like it is nothing or, oh, it is just the flu. We have 211,000 people looking at an empty chair at their dinner table because their Family Member died of covid and they couldnt do a joy ride to see them. Watch theling to Republican Party literally contort themselves to justify the idiotic receipt of this president. I hope that everybody gets out and vote this man out of office. We look insane on the world stage. Not even to mention, a National Security risk of him tweeting out exactly what time he is leaving the hospital and where he is going to be. There are so many levels of toutishness because he wants this attention so bad. Host speaking of the president s tweets, this was the president responding to driveby, about his those supporters outside of walter reed. The president tweeting, it is reported the media is criticizing because i got out to say thank you to the many fans and supporters who were standing outside of the hospital for many hours, and even days, to pay their respect the president. If i didnt do it, media would say rude. Caller good morning. I just wanted to talk a little bit about this empty chair comment i hear a lot now. People see their relatives, look over and they see an md chair because they died of covid. Ago, when grandma had pancreatic cancer, and she got the flu, we didnt say she died of the flu. Grandma died of pancreatic cancer. Ais gentleman that called in couple of minutes ago and said i forgot where he said there was a country that had 300 deaths host south korea. Caller if you believe that and that might be true to covid deaths. Talking deaths of people that have cancer. They were already on their way out and they got covid and push them out. Lets be honest. People are dying of preexisting conditions overall. That are a few outliers people die just from covid, but it is very limited. At the end of the day, we will learn that the lockdowns that have been imposed in the financial crisis that has been created, will result in more suicides and Mental Health issues than covid ever did. Talk aboutat they trump taking his mask off, he is up on the veranda at the white house, he is 50 feet away from everyone, and everyone is horrified. That is a crazy, crazy thing. This is nuts. If this virus is so bad, so awful, where are the bio hazards bins for the gloves and the masks . We go to the supermarket. This is such an awful thing. Shouldnt these masks be bio hazards . This is such an awful disease . Host that is eric in new hampshire. Pulling up the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus dashboard tracker. We have used it plenty of times throughout the pandemic, focusing on south korea. Some 24,239 cases reported in south korea. Total deaths, at this point, 422. You can click around that map around the globe and in individual states and counties in the United States. Paul, michigan, republican, you are next. Caller thanks for taking my call. I think that when we look back party ashe democratic well as the Mainstream Media has done ever since trump has become president , they have been looking if it is not russian theyn, impeachment have been looking to blame him for what they feel is his illegitimate presidency. Covid, whens to trump i look at his actions. When he shut down airplane , we hadrom china pelosi, biden, major democratic leadership that were calling President Trump a xenophobic and calling him a racist. Lets golosi saying, out and come to chinatown. We had Major Political representatives in new york saying, go out to eat, go to broadway, go see a show. I think that trumps actions louder than speak what the Democratic Party has portrayed that to be. Furthermore, i think that the covid deaths and the way they are recorded, i think several other callers have mentioned that those deaths i think everything is attributed to a covid death. Hink a lot of these deaths there is a culpability there that is really the cause of the death. I do think that we cannot be scared of this virus. The economies have to go on. If you go to a lockdown lets look at the secondary tertiary of that with suicide, drug abuse. It really can go on and on. I think people need to look at the big picture. We have a bill of rights. We have independents in this country. Furthermore, i think people have to take personal responsibility toward their own actions. Host that is paul in michigan. Paul talking about comments from political leaders. Here are a few more within the last 24 hours. First, congresswoman Veronica Escobar linking one of President Trumps tweets about leaving the hospital saying please dont take advice from this super spreader. He cant recognize that covid19 is a dangerous and deadly iris that has caused the lives of nearly 210,000 guy americans. Remember, ifing you get covid19, you wont get airlifted to walter reed and outed over by topnotch doctors and given experimental drugs, and neither will your loved ones. Congressman andy biggs asking this question about masking or unmasking the the print consensust scientific just seven or eight months ago was that masks, especially nonsurgical masks were about useless for the purposes the experts are now championing. More comments yesterday from one of the leaders on capitol hill, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell on the president s as well as the diagnosis of three of his Republican Senate colleagues. Washington journal [video clip] the senate has spent the last three days praying for quick healing and smooth recovery for president and the first lady following their positive covid19 tests. I spoke to the president by phone twice this past weekend. Both times, his spirits were high. Both times, we talked about the peoples business, our nation fight against this pandemic, his exceptional nominated nominee to the Supreme Court as well as our efforts to continue rebuilding the economy for working families. We are also thinking of our friends and colleagues, the Senior Center for utah, the Senior Center for wisconsin and the junior senator from pennsylvania currently working from home. The democrats will say the past few days have provided a stark reminder of the terrible dangers of this virus. The truth is, our nation did not need any such reminder. More than 209,000 of our fellow citizens have lost their lives. Millions have battled illness or had their lives disrupted by positive tests. Home stateeekend, my of kentucky just recorded its highest ever one day total. We all need to remain vigilant. We all need to remain careful. Host senator Mitch Mcconnell on the senate floor yesterday. About 10 minutes left in this segment as we ask you, has the president s coronavirus case changed your view of covid19 . The, columbus, georgia on line for those that have had covid. Go ahead. Caller thanks for taking my call. I had covid when it first came out in december last year. I think because of the ignoreds it i ignorance of know for a fact, i went to the hospital and they didnt know what it was. Based on that, i know i other got it from people because they were protecting themselves through wearing gloves or stuff like that. I got it, and i am sure because we didnt know what it was, i probably spread it, too. Since then, there has been a lot , a lot more Research Done to it and a lot of these people that were on air giving these bad, giving all of this misinformation. You dont see them anymore. I think they have gotten kind of a line on how to treat this stuff. I am also a veteran. Im not the president. They would take good care of me if that happened. Now that they have all of this information and the medicines. Im sure they took care of him. Also, when i had it, it was extreme. We also know now that some people do not go through extremes and some are asymptomatic but still test positive for it. He may have just been that way. Also, i think it is very evil that these people are saying that he should die or, well, he is not showing symptoms. At the same time, they are claiming that he should somehow observe the science that they are not observing from his doctors. That is crazy. Host that is eric in georgia. This is kathy from michigan, line for democrats. Caller good morning. I think the president s is not president ial at all. It is very cruel. I can understand how he felt with the cocktail because in the school year, the winter of 2005, i was very poor on medicaid. After teaching a full day, i knew that i had to see someone. I stopped at a clinic. I very confident Nurse Practitioner took care of me. An xray revealed i had pneumonia in one lung. A drug buted me because of medicaid, i only received amoxicillin. , and thisrt enough only happened to me once, i did receive a cocktail. To my house in lewiston and i dont think i was three miles down the road and i was flying high. It was that effective. It is not something you can have done over and over again. Watching him speak on one of the clips, his chest rising and falling very rapidly, he is struggling to breathe. He is still infectious. I have a friend who was diagnosed very early on with covid. It took three attempts to my friend was behind herself because her sister is only in her early 50s. She did survive, but she is still struggling. President trump needs to stop using the American People. He needs to work for us rather than having us take care of him all the time. Host kathy in michigan. Staying in michigan, this is pat, republican. Good morning. Caller good morning. I just want to say as a nurse, i have watched the whole thing evolve. I have watched that they have used things like integrating everybody. I had it, too, and i spoke to someone early on who had it. The treatments were not there. They overestimated what they should do. I think putting someone on a respirator, sometimes like that gentleman, is not necessarily the right course of treatment. What President Trump is doing is he is modeling what they can do in essentially treating effectively or curing the virus. It should give people hope. People shouldnt be negative. The naysayers should not be causing anxiety or using it politically to drive trump because there are so many people who are emotionally impacted by seeing their family, their grandchildren getting back to normal. It is a hopeful thing and people should be helpful. Host jimmy in sacramento, california, democrat. Caller hello. I am calling because i want bible to know that in the a said there will be [indiscernible] jimmy, cant hear you very well, but we will go to arkansas. Caller i am from arkansas. I had covid. They want to use my blood possibly to help other people because of the antibodies. My husband had it. Also, rand paul had it and he was not wearing a mask outside he already hadse it and he was immune to it. And then, they want your blood just like i think it was the mayor of miami, same thing, gave his blood to warm blood. My husband had it, i had it, minor symptoms. Everybody is so afraid. The bible says fear is a sin. Host has the president s diagnoses change your view at all on this . Ourer proud of president. Our president is the most wonderful person in the world and everybody is going around bowing to this coronavirus. Corona means crown. Lucifer wants to take the crown of jesus christ. There was people over there, it was Franklin Graham and jonathan con, masses of people worshiping the lord. The praise of the lord went up. Host that is linda in arkansas. This is bill in delaware, independent. Caller good morning. Joe biden made a statement saying that everybody has the corona. They got it because of their own stupidity, more or less. What about the poor people in the Nursing Homes . What kind of a hypocrite man is that . You want to go after the president of the United States . Im sorry, i could not vote for that hypocrite if he was the king. Host that is bill this morning. Joe biden expected to deliver remarks today. We will hear more from him today in gettysburg, pennsylvania calling on americans to come together according to his deputy press secretary. Wewill remind voters that are battling for the soul of the nation, a battle we have won throughout American History and how we can and will come together to win again. That speech, from joe biden happening later today. That is going to do it for this first segment. Up next, we will take a closer look at the senate battlefield in election 2020. We will be joined by Jessica Taylor of cook political report, and later, author and Vice President ial scholar, Joel Goldstein, joins us for a preview of tomorrow nights Vice President ial debate. We will be right back. The contenders about the men who ran for the presidency and lost. Tonight, he served as speaker of the house before going to the senate, james blaine. On americanrs history tv on cspan3. The competition is on. To be a part of this years cspan studentcam video competition. You will find competition rules, tips and more information on how to get started at our website, studentcam. Org. Washington journal continues. The we take a look at battle for control of the senate. We are joined by Jessica Taylor of the nonpartisan, cook political report. It will take a net gain of four seats for the democrats to take the senate, three if they also take the white house. How likely is that outcome as you survey the senate battlefield today . Guest in july, we were saying that democrats had a slight edge. I think that edge has now really grown. Especially over the past tumultuous week that we saw beginning with the disastrous debate for President Trump that has clearly turned off a lot of voters. We are seeing that reflected in National Polls of the president ial race and sundays washington journal poll. As cnn poll had joe biden up 16. Those kind of numbers have a major effect on senate races. Republican strategists i have been talking to that are working like,se races, they are the numbers are just bad everywhere. There is a lot of pessimism i am hearing. Today is four weeks from election day. There is not a lot of time to change things around, especially when a lot of people are already voting. You mentioned they need for seats if joe biden does not win and three seats if they do not. I think the likelihood that joe biden wins is slightly greater if the senate flips. Becauseit is four seats the seat that republicans are likely democrats are likely to lose is from doug jones. There has been some scandals in North Carolina that have shaken up the race. Democrats have expanded the battlefield. We now have 10 republican seats that we consider repetitive competitive. You can see the super packed over the past week when places like the Senate Leadership fund, the major group aligned with Senate Leadership, is spending in places like kansas and South Carolina. That sort of tells you how really bad things are for republicans everywhere. Host you the term tumultuous week. Carolina. Ned north can you just explain what has been happening in the past couple of days . Guest friday night, it was an onslaught of news. If you were following the news that day and night. We started in the morning with the news of President Trump and first lady melanias covid diagnosis. Later on that evening, we learned that North Carolina tillis, the republican incumbent is very much in trouble there has also tested positive. He is now having to quarantine. He also sits on the Senate Judiciary committee that will begin hearing the confirmation amys for judge a coney barrett. That is supposed to begin october 12. If that wasnt enough, we had a scandal that broke with the democratic nominee, the former state senator cal cunningham, where he admitted he had sent illicit text to a woman who is not his wife. ,f you want to get out the news bad news, friday night was probably the time to do it. This was on the front page of the Charlotte Observer the raleigh news and observer. He canceled at a forum last mike that he was supposed to be at. We really have not seen him in public answering questions since then. I think this really puts into doubt like i said, i think North Carolina was the Tipping Point state for democrats to win the majority. How much does this scandal affect that . We really have not seen a quality pole coming out since can, alive collar poll that a live caller poll that can test it. Is there more to draw from a scandal like this . Was there more than just texting . Was there an affair . How long did this go on because some of the messages seemed to talk about 100 days away from the campaign. There is also even the possibility of a courtmartial perhaps because he is in the reserves. The husband of this woman he was texting is also in the military. There are military repercussions that could come into play as well. This is a headache that no justdate or party wants weeks away from the election. I think that throws a lot of uncertainty into this race. Again, the good news for democrats is that they still have multiple seats following that one that are very much in play. The other tossups we have our georgia and then i think almost there is South Carolina where Lindsey Graham finds himself the Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman finds himself in a very tough race. The good news for democrats is that there are more seats because they have expanded the battlefield beyond just that. If something happens in North Carolina, they have alternatives, in a way. These sort of scandals move numbers or is this more of a National Election about the party and more of a backlash against republicans . Host Jessica Taylor, our guest this morning. I do want to point viewers to want totical. Com if you keep track of the race ratings we are going to be talking about. I very easy chart there to find to see where cook political and Jessica Taylor rank these races. I do want to give viewers the numbers to call and if you have questions about the senate battlefield or a particular race. Now would be a very good time to call in. Republicans have one number, democrats as well as independents. Jessica taylor, you were beginning to talk about South Carolina a little bit. Senator Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, where Amy Coney Barrett will be having her hearings. Republicans moving through with those hearings next week. He is facing Jamie Harrison, the democrat in that race. Over the weekend, they held their debate. One of the issues that came up was the Supreme Court nomination. Heres a little bit from that debate. [video clip] sometimes listening to senator graham reminds me of playing monopoly with my son. He changes the rules every time he gets. Senator, you said use my words against me. You set it after the kavanaugh meetings, not before, after. In your words, your promise was that no judicial nominee should be considered or approved or what have you in the last year of an election. You even named President Trump when you set it. This is my thing, my grandfather always taught me, he said, jamie, a man is only as good as his word. How good is your word when you made a promise to the American People, to the folks in South Carolina, that you wouldnt be doing what you are doing right now . That is the problem that i have. I think the greatest to heresy you can do as a Public Servant is to betray the trust of the people you took an oath to serve. That is what you have done. Just be a man and stand up and say you know what, i changed my mind. But dont go back and blame it on somebody else for a flipflop you are making yourself. August, may, i said in if a voting comes about, we will see what the market will bear. To get confirmed because the president has the authority to do it. Was president obama elected, i honored the fact that he won. I watch the Democratic Party try to destroy one conservative judge after another. Mr. Harrison encouraged the filibuster of judge gorsuch, the first filibuster in the history of the senate. He cheered on the discussion destruction of brett kavanaugh. I am the chairman of the Judiciary Committee. The president has every right to do this. If you are counting on mr. Harrison to ever vote for a conservative judge, youre making a mistake of high proportion. Thank you, sir. Host Jessica Taylor of cook political. You currently have that South Carolina senate race in the lead. Did that inmate make any difference did that debate make any difference . Guest i think it did. Another interesting note that you may have seen on that video, Jamie Harrison got his own plexiglass screen to put up. That is because Lindsey Graham had met with senators that had tested positive recently. He tested negative, but of even if youe know, have been exposed to someone with a virus, you are recommended to quarantine. Since he was not doing that, mr. Harrison wanted to take extra precautions. These are the same precautions we will now see in the Vice President ial debate happening wednesday. Just rrison is really has really caught fire down there. He has a really inspiring story. He came from poverty and one of the poorest cities in South Carolina. And of going to yale and georgetown. Raised by a single teen mother and his grandparents. He has been airing ads since spring and has not gone down. This point, he is spending i think last week, he was over 7 million on tv ads. Lindsey graham has clearly seen this because last week, he was going on fox news really begging for money. Harrison, you kind of saw in that clip that he has hitting him for switching his positions. I think Lindsey Graham is one of the most fascinating politicians out there because as you may remember, he had this very shortlived run for the presidency in 2016. He called President Trump a race baiting xenophobic religious bigot. Now, he is one of his closest allies. He has undergone a major evolution in the past few years. Conservatives back in South Carolina were kind of skeptical of him because he pushed immigration reform, he was part of the gang of eight. Now, he is very much trumps ally. He has underperforming with republicans and i think he hopes that now he is the face of these confirmation hearings, that can help solidify his standing. Almost every question in not debate, he ended up turning back to judges in the Supreme Court versus Jamie Harrison really wanted to focus on coronavirus and how the state had been hit and what he could do to fix it. I think this is going to be one of the most Expensive Senate races in the country. We had this race in solid republican at the beginning of the year. It was not supposed to be this competitive. I think a lot of that is credited to the really Strong Campaign Jamie Harrison is running. He is the former state Party Chairman in South Carolina. Clyburnto work for jim in the house as his for director. South carolina has a very fraught racial history. If he wins, South Carolina would be the first state to have two black senators, the place where the civil war started. Host a dozen Competitive Senate races this cycle. We want to hear which ones you want to talk about this morning on [video clip] washington journal. Jessica taylor with us until about eight eastern this morning. We start with david out of philadelphia. Caller good morning. My question and topic is generally about the travel ban, in particular. I know that republican members of the senate and donald trump has been tagging joe biden saying that he says the xenophobic for instituting this china travel ban. I believe the term has been false. You guys just said that Lindsey Graham has called President Trump xenophobic. Joe biden was calling President Trump xenophobic based off of his record with the muslim ban, things of that sort. It wasnt specifically for the travel bans that were instituted in the beginning of the year. Also, host david, lets take this up, Jessica Taylor, this issue of handling the coronavirus, very much an issue in many of these campaigns. Guest i think this has just overshadowed everything and has really offended campaigning as we know it upended campaigning as we know it. They have had to transform into a lot of online ventures. We do see candidates going out more now, but a lot of republicans, as we have seen this issue take a very partisan divide, we see a lot of republican candidates out there that are not wearing masks, not adhering to social distancing, while mostly democrats have been very careful on that issue. They are Holding Events outdoors. They are requiring masks and different things. Certainly, some republicans are taking precautions, but there are a lot of them again, unfortunate political connotations. Has broughtsident the point of the china travel ban, but i think it is more than that. One of the senators that is very vulnerable is georgia senator kelly loeffler. She was appointed to the seat at the beginning of the year. Ironically, she was appointed over the white house objections in order to sort of appeal to suburban women, which they are in the very growing and changing atlanta suburbs, has become republicans achilles heel everywhere. That is sort of their path to taking back the senate in states like this. Georgia has two races this cycle. In that special election, which is a jungle primary, an all Party Primary that will happen on election day. There are 21 candidates that will appear on the ballot. Regardless of party, the top two will advance to what is likely going to be a january 5, 2021 runoff. Depending upon how these other senate races shakeout, that could be a majority maker. She has been having to run so far to the right to prove her conservative bona fides that she is also being challenged from the right by congressman doug collins, the Ranking Member on the house Judiciary Committee that was one of the president s staunchest defenders during the peach meant proceedings. She came out this week after President Trump diagnosed and repeatedly on twitter, blamed this on china. We seenk most americans joe biden as having the advantage on handling the coronavirus, he would do better on these things. Yes, this virus may have come from there, but once it was here in america, we did not see leadership from that the top in the white house on how to implement quick testing to proper procedures like people like dr. Fauci were pushing for masks and social distancing. The president also wanted to open things up very quickly. Republicans seeing i think this is one of the biggest things that has hurt races down ballots. Host you mentioned at the top of this segment that republicans lone best pickup opportunity this cycle coming in alabama, the seat of democrat doug jones. Sharon is in cullman, alabama, a republican. Good morning to you. Caller thanks for taking my call. Yes, you spoke very clearly about what i had said when i called and. I dont know if she is partisan or what, and it is ok if she is, but she keeps implying and it is not just her, other facets of the media have also implied doom and gloom. Republicans are being challenged, they are behind in the polls. I have always wondered why it is not broken down evenly where there are democrats that are behind, Democratic Senators that are behind in the polls. Democratic senators that are being challenged and it is getting closer. I would like her just to speak on that some, too. Host do you want to talk about what you do . Guest a lot depends on which senators are up. There is a third of the senate that are up. Senators have sixyear terms. It was last cycle, mostly democrats that were ending seats in very reppo republican territories. Even though democrats largely had a very successful midterm flipping the house, they lost states and Democratic Senators in missouri and indiana and north dakota. Again, they were defending a very democrats that were in red states. It is really the opposite this time around. Republicans are defending almost double the end amount of states. Upre are 23 republican seats compared to 12 for democrats. We have two states that are republican incumbents in states that trump lost and that is cory gardner in colorado, probably the most vulnerable republican. Theank that race giving edge to the former democratic governor. Collins, whoan faces the toughest race of her career running against the state house speaker, sarah gideon. There is also an added wrinkle there because maine has choice voting. If she is not getting a majority, they go to who ranked someone the second. There are a couple of thirdParty Candidates who could really complicate things there. When we look at just this year money being spent, there is really only two republican offense of opportunities, and that is an alabama, which again, i do think will flip doug jones. Special election in 2017, the former seat of former attorney general jeff sessions. He defeated republican roy moore in a very close election, but of course, there were Sexual Misconduct allegations against roy moore. The other sort of offense of opportunity is in michigan, estate President Trump won in 2016. Peters running against republican john james, an africanamerican veteran. That is a state we rate as leaned democrat at this point. We are nonpartisan at the cook political report. We have been around since 1984. We are one of the most respected nonpartisan publications out there. We talked to both republican and democratic strategists. We are looking at polling. Onlyublic polling is not showing this, but also polling we see from republicans shows this in very dire straits. 2014, whene, in republicans looked the senate, it was very different. A lot of it depends on the climate. If joe biden wins this year, his first Midterm Election in 2022, typically, we see incumbent president s loses seats in their first Midterm Elections. It is really just reflective of what the Political Climate is and which seats are up. Ortunate forward unfortunately for republicans, they drew some very difficult seats. These are senators that were first elected in 2014, which was one of the best republican years for them in recent memory and the last time they flipped senate control. Host about 20 minutes left with desiccant taylor this morning. Cookpolitical. Com and you can find Jessica Taylor pretty easily on twitter. Our discussion on South Carolina and senator Lindsey Graham getting a lot of attention. Karen writing in this morning that there are republicans i know not supporting graham. They see that he does not care about the citizens of South Carolina and only supports trump. His debate performance was weak as evidenced by his not answer to the judge question. Steve out of charleston, South Carolina, i wonder what he thinks of those comments. Youer briefly, of course, know i called in on the independent line. Im looking forward to seeing Don Blankenship from the Constitution Party on her show at some point. Dr. Lindsey graham and Jamie Harrison. Jamie harrison clearly has a deep warchest. I dont know where his funding is coming from, but i will say this. Down in South Carolina on the coast, the political demographics has changed over the years. More and more people are voting blue. Joe cunningham and even in the president ial races. We go blue in charleston county. However, when you move away from the coast and start going upstate, people are deeply concerned about abortion, prolife, military, immigration, economy, veterans affairs. Once you start moving upstate, those things become much more important than the things jamie is pointing out. Lindsay is scared. He acts like he is really deeply concerned. He has been begging for money. Every time i turn the tv on, jamies face pops up. When i look at youtube, his ads pop up. He is getting a lot of money from somewhere, i dont know where, but he is giving lindsay a good run for his money. Host lets see if Jessica Taylor can help with following the money. Guest democrats have really built a behemoth fundraising effort online through act blue. With Justice Ginsburgs death on the 18th, in the hours following that, there was, i believe, in the 72 hours following her death, there was about 200 million that was brought in through act blue, given to many of those senate candidates. Republicans have really struggled to have an alternative to sort of catch up with that online money. I think a lot of republicans rely more on big events, fundraisers to get their money. That has been curtailed in this age of covid. They have a win read platform they recently debuted. It has not been able to catch up to act blue. A lot of it certainly is coming in from out of the state. Lindsey graham has become this very partisan sort of figure given that he is now sort of everywhere with the president and on fox news a lot and different things. I want to speak to one other thing the caller said. He talked about the upstate as being more conservative. Inctually went to college greenville, kelly South Carolina. It is even an area that is changing. You do see it is becoming more suburban, higher educated. You see a lot of white, collegeeducated women. Those are the people Jamie Harrison needs to pick off, and i think that he can. Yes, there are still very conservative pockets. Bob Jones University is there as well. There are a lot of social conservatives he is not going to get, but i think there are a lot of women frustrated with trump and frustrated with his antics. You saw that very much on display in last weeks debate. With graham being so closely aligned to him and sort of the flipflop he made on confirming judges in the timeline and such a quick electoral timeline, i inthat sort of has focus groups i have talked with people, that is coming up. He mentioned charleston, the district Joe Cunningham flipped, that is becoming a more democratic area of the state, or at least more of a swing district. And then, you have york county that is right along the border, almost in charlotte. I think those are places you can votes. While South Carolina does not have as many urban senators as a North Carolina or georgia, there are pockets that are changing and there are people moving in from outofstate. I think South Carolina is a changing state. Again, it is not changing as fast as other states in the sunbelt, but it is one to watch. Host florida, ralph, a republican. Becauseim calling since president obama was in office, ive seen the republicans come off quite spiritual religious. However, i have not learned how to be saved. I have not learned from the republicans how a person is to is to react in these whys im just wondering they are becoming so spiritual but no advice on how to live together, how to be a better person. It has gone downhill. Just one, if i may. Person think an educated would have a hard time listening to cspan. There is so much misinformation. Just really difficult to watch cspan now. Thanks for your call. Host how would you change things . Do you not want to hear from the callers so much . Factcheckthey would some callers that call in. Give some information. You guys try to pull up things that counteract things they say. The misinformation is so horrible. A person of any understanding would not want to listen to this. Host you think misinformation is worse today than it has ever been . Caller it is the worst it has ever been. I have been in an ichabod situation. Drug abuse, prison. I woke up. Been inople have not these situations i have. They have always had the same jobs but have not grown spiritually. I think donald trump has taken this misinformation and made this country into his own party. It is really disheartening. Horrible, ormation is for a person to seek their own. Host that was ralph in florida. Out of virginia, jeff, a democrat. How much attention are you paying to the race in virginia . Caller not too much. Mark warner probably has it locked up. I have watched a couple of debates and i think virginia is blue. I have a couple of questions for the guest. Thank you for coming on. Number one would be to get ticketng to get splitting. The president ial race has tightened. How much do you expect in North Carolina . How much do you see . In my other question is for the electorate on election night, what senate race do you see giving major upset that would shock and surprise the Republican Party if you look at the way things are trending especially reading the polls and seeing where the fundraising is. Mississippi and obviously South Carolina. All great candidates. Do you see any major upsets on the horizon . One final comment. I agree with the last caller regarding the callers this morning. The president is a major super noter superspreader of only covid, but misinformation. It is sad to see. Thank you. Host questions out of woodbridge. Which ones do want to take first . Guest ticket splitting is something we used to see happening far more often going back to postwatergate politics that very often people would split their ticket, they would vote for the president of one nominee and a senator of another party. It has almost evaporated. Every single senate race with the same way as the president ial result in that state. For is a little ominous states like arizona and colorado where we do see biden leading trump by a varying margin. I think it is very bad news for Susan Collins in maine. North carolina is much closer and that is a state that could be very swayed by the president ial election. We talked about the scandals happening there so we are not sure how that is going to affect it. Thom tillis is running behind President Trump hoping that the Supreme Court vacancy, he is another senator that sits on the Judiciary Committee. He was very gung ho from the beginning saying he would confirm President Trumps nominee before we had a nominee name. Martha mcsally also running behind President Trump in that state. She is an interesting one to watch. She is also appointed to the state so this is a special john mccainsll seat and whoever runs again will have to run again in 2022. She was appointed after losing in the very bitter 2018 race. She was appointed almost after. She had very high negatives after that race. It is hard. Most senators if they run hard races, they have six years to recover. She had virtually nonbecause the race began immediately. Astronaut, former against former congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford in 2011. They have been guncontrol advocates. She has consistently run behind him and i think that is a very difficult race. He mentioned montana. You have governor Steve Bullock that the democrats convinced to run against steve daines. A 2ois not going to be point margin. He has a history of electing senators of the other party. Jon tester was elected two years ago. He was known on the same ballot as President Trump. They are hoping that that can move the other way. I think President Trump is going to win montana. That is perhaps good news for steve daines if that news of 2016 holds. That is something to watch for. ,eorgia is now a swing state how do both of those races go . The other question he asked about, are there any possible upsets. We talked about North Carolina. The other two to keep an eye on arkansas in alaska. Seat, senatorpen pat roberts is retiring. Republicans had a bitter primary fight. The former secretary of state who has been an outspoken antiimmigration advocate has had misinformation that President Trump has as well about voter fraud that has not been proven at all, speaking to the callers that were talking about the preponderance of misinformation. Republicans were worried that he was going to win there. Congressman Roger Marshall from the First District did win the nomination but emerged with virtually no money, not very well known around the state so he has struggled to introduce himself. We have both of the major super majorities and leadership fun for the republicans that are spending millions of dollars there. Democrats have a very good candidate in barbara bully a, she is a state legislator who was a former republican and switched parties to become democrat. She has bipartisan credit. Kansas is still a pretty republican state. Did left they Governors Mansion with laura winning. Ding she has a lot of money to spend. Raceng shows a tight leaning republican and it could be an upstate. A democrat has not won the senate seat for about one century. That would be a major upset. The last is a quirky political date. Dan sullivan is the republican incumbent who nearly beat mark in 2019. He is an orthopedic surgeon. He has a family clinical history. His father had been a democratic attorney general under a republican governor there who helped create the fund that is given to everyone in alaska every year. He is endorsed by democrats. He is running as an independent but will appear on the ballot as a democrat after a court ruling about the ballot. He says he is an independent and would caucus with democrats. He is raising a lot of money too. He talks about how he killed a bear and alaskan ruggedness. I think dan sullivan is still leading, but this is a race to watch. We have this as slightly republican but watch it in the coming days, it is one we are looking into. I think it could be moving into a more competitive category for democrats. Host five minutes left with Jessica Taylor. We want to get in a couple more callers. This is andrew in fort worth, texas. Go ahead. Caller thanks for taking my call. Jessica, i have a couple questions. The ralph lauren act, is polling, do you think he has a chance to get into the special normal special runoff . That is my first question. My second question is it is more about the president ial race in endorsing joellen biden. Receivedvan mcmullen 22 of the vote. Ifonder if that is going you think those types of votes might go to joe biden that would have maybe gone to Hillary Clinton in 2016. Host thanks for the questions. Guest let me talk about georgia. This is an all Party Primary where all of the candidates run on the ballot. If no candidate gets 50 , a ghostly january 5, 2021 runoff. It goes togoes a january 5, 2021 runoff. The pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist church in atlanta, Martin Luther king jr. s church, he has been endorsed by Stacey Abrams and is trying to energize black voters. At this point, she has her own money to spend. She is a multimillionaire. I think she is the most likely to be the second person in that runoff. She had a rocky start at first controversieswere over some stock trades that were made as the pandemic was hitting. She sort of weathered that. Collins does not have a lot of money. Worn off has money. Started spending on tv ads in mid august and we have seen his numbers rise. I think at this point i would put him in the runoff. There is a lot of frustration with democrats in this race because there are two other democrats that have been pushing this so that democrats can andolidate around warnock maybe get over 50 and ensure he is in the runoff and the worst Case Scenario would be if leffler and collins both advanced. The other two major democrats in the rice are Matt Lieberman who is the son of former senator and Vice President of domine nominee Joe Lieberman. People sort of know the lieberman name. A former u. S. Attorney is also africanamerican, but both of them are very low single digits. Those are certainly plates that warnock would like to have. I did the other question was about utah. I think the other question was about utah. It has been steady we look back over the last few months. Seven orteadily seen a eight point lead for joe biden over President Trump. I mentioned earlier that we have seen two reputable National Polls come out in recent days. The nbc wall street journal poll on sunday that showed a 12 point margin lead for biden. Excuse me, 14 point lead for biden. A scene in poll showed a 16 point lead. Poll showed a 16 point lead. There are a lot of mormon voters that were skeptical of biden. I still think it is a state that he is going to win. Ofwe are looking at that big a lead, President Trump is not going to hit what his 2016 margins were. I still think that President Trump is going to carry a state like utah. 40 fourthe next weeks, a good site to bookmark. Cookpolitical. Com, Jessica Taylor is the senate and governors editor there. We do appreciate your time. Thanks so much. Guest thanks for having me. Host coming up next, we will turn to a discussion about the vice presidency and tomorrow nights president ial debate. We will be joined by Joel Goldstein, author and Vice President ial scholar. We will be right back. I honestly would tell you, i dont think when the dust settles it will be whether america becomes more republican or more democrat. Whether we are more liberal or conservative, red or blue, i think the choice is whether america remains america. As joe biden has said from the moment he entered this race, it is about the soul of our nation. For,e are, what we stand and maybe most importantly, who we want to be. Announcer watch the Vice President ial debate between michael pence and Kamala Harris live wednesday at 9 00 p. M. Eastern from the university of utah in salt lake city. Watch it live on cspan. Listen live on the cspan radio app and go to cspan. Org debates for live and ondemand streaming of the coverage. There is also a link to each question and answer accurate see social media feeds on debates happening in reaction and watch president ial debate video from the cspan video library. Washington journal continues. Ahead of the only Vice President ial debate of campaign 2020 taking place tomorrow, we are joined by Joel Goldstein of st. Louis State University law professor, author of the book, the white house vice presidency the path to significance. How much of a spotlight does President Trumps Coronavirus Diagnosis put on tomorrow night Vice President ial debate . Certainlyhink it enhances the importance. This would be the 11th Vice President of debate but the first time that the two Vice President ial candidates have seriousin the shadow of president ial illness. The fact that the two president ial candidates are the Oldest National Party Candidates to ever run for the presidency already lends some importance to the debate. As your question suggests, this unique situation certainly enhances all the more. Host is there any specific advantage or disadvantage for Kamala Harris or Vice President biden with the age of the two candidates and now the Health Condition of President Trump . I dont know that there is an advantage or disadvantage. I think it may change a little bit the tenor of the debate. Usually Vice President ial debates are not so much about the two Vice President ial candidates although they are trying to credential eyes themselves as plausible president s and Vice President s. Primarily onfocus the competing president ial candidates. This debatek that for a number of reasons including the president s covid19 positive test in this instance, there may be more focused on the two Vice President ial candidates. Host the Vice President ial debate, usually the debate that gets the lowest ratings when it comes to debate season ahead of an election. Has there ever been a race altering moment in a Vice President ial debate . Guest that is a good question. It is hard to know exactly whether something is a racealtering moment. I think there was one perhaps. First vicee very president ial debate between senators Walter Mondale and bob dole. Senator dole toward the end of the debate made the reference the wars of the 20th century had been democrat wars and cost america a lot of lives. Senator mondale responded that senator dole had earned his reputation as a hatchet man, that it was inconceivable that he would present or the war in korea as a partisan venture. Which camedebate late in the campaign cycle, governor jimmy carter started mentioning senator mondale much more frequently in his discussions and speeches. Mondale spent a fair amount of time in some of the competitive states during the last couple weeks of the campaign. In some of those states, ohio, pennsylvania, carter nearly won. Narrowly won. I think it made a difference in the 1976 outcome. In 2000, dick cheney was perceived to have won the Vice President ial debate, to have presented himself as a rational, sober, which were person mature person. It may be that they perception would be surrounded by people like mr. Cheney contributed to his very narrow election victory. Host we are talking about the vice presidency, the debate taking place tomorrow in utah. Guest, st. Ein is our Louis University school of law professor, author of the book, the white house vice presidency the past to significance. I want to let you know that the house is expected to come in for a brief pro forma session at 9 00 a. M. Eastern. We would like our callers is to stick with us. We will go there for live coverage when the house does come in. We will be back with professor goldstein on the other side of that. Please do stay on the lines. Line up is tina on the for those who support the biden harris ticket. Good morning. Caller good morning. Host go ahead. Caller i was wondering, i had not heard about what the questions would be from the moderator for the Vice President debate. I had not heard what they would have lined up for the candidates. Host professor goldstein . Guest the moderator, susan page, a very distinguished journalist, i have not seen a summary of what the questions would be. But i would certainly assume that they will be there will be discussion of a range of issues including the coronavirus. Andemic Vice President pence is the chair of the task force that has been handling it. I would think that there would be questions that would deal with the Supreme Court ,omination of judge barrett senator harris is a member of the Judiciary Committee that next week will begin its hearings, or is scheduled to, and a range of other issues including the economy, racial justice, long orders, other issues like that law and order. Host ones are split up by those who support the biden harris ticket, those who support the trump pence ticket, and those who are undecided. Good morning. Caller good morning. Pencery concerned about s stance when he was in his own state, the lack of support for the lgbt community. I am obviously gay and very active in the Sonoma County pride festivals and events and we are really concerned about that. Im also concerned about his lack of leadership on the coronavirus as head of the task force. He has shown no individuality and no willingness to stand out on his own and confront trump on issues that are very important and controversial. Goldstein . Ssor guest certainly Vice President pence has been very conservative of social policy and rights for lgbtq communities. Certainly one of those issues dating back to his time in indiana. The Supreme Court, two of the justices yesterday expressed misgivings about the Supreme Courts decision recognizing the right of samesex couples to marry. I think that could be one of the issues that is discussed. Ter and walterty mondale created the new vice presidency, one of the things that mondale communicated to srter was the Vice President function op to be in part to make sure that the president gets advice and is willing to tell the president things that he or she may not want to hear. Vice president mondale certainly played that role. Most of our Vice President s have , it is not clear to what extent a Vice President Vice President pence has assumed that role or not. I think that concern is one that others have had an shared. And shared. Host we remind viewers about the 2016 Vice President ial debate. Vice president mike pences performance against senator tom kane. Who won that debate . Guest it is always difficult to say who one. Who won. I think governor pence was thought to have them very well. Vice president pence is a very able communicator. He had a background as a talk show host before he was into politics. I think he is one of the more effective spokesperson in the trump administration. He stays on message very well. He communicates the points that he wants to make. He seemed to be very much at ease in the setting. Who is one of the very able members of the United States senate seemed to be somewhat uncomfortable in the or attackingcize the opposing party and some people thought that he did not do that as naturally as some other candidates have done on other occasions. Host do you think mike pence will have to be more of the criticizer or attacker in the upcoming debate tomorrow . Know that he will be more of the attacker. Vice president pences style is entirely different than President Trumps. Vice president pence tends to waysnt himself in some like Vice President cheney did, as a more rational, more softspoken person than President Trump. Theends not to engage in vitriol characterizations that often characterize the president s discourse. Attacks, he tends to do it in more conventional ways and not with the namecalling or the disparaging comments that the president does. I would expect that Vice President pence will certainly be critical of the democratic ticket and democratic policies arewill suggest that they too liberal and that law and order is at stake and will celebrate the accomplishments of the trump administration. The other thing that Vice President pence will be trying to do is to present himself as a plausible president perhaps in part with an eye toward 2024. Host do you think Kamala Harris will be taking on the role of more of the aggressor in the debate . Harrisi think senator will be trying to present herself to the American People. This is part of her introduction of the four national candidates, she is the only one who has not participated in a National Campaign previously. It is part of her introduction. She is less wellknown than the others. I think she will be trying to the themes of the biden harris ticket and to criticize the record of the trumppence administration. I dont know that i would characterize her as an willssor, but i think she make the attacks about the administrations handling of the coronavirus pandemic, about some of theconsequences nomination of judge barrett on american lives and so forth. Host the phone numbers if you want to join the discussion. Support88001 if you the trumppence ticket. 202 7488000 if you support the biden harris ticket. 202 7488002 if you are undecided or you support others. We are talking about the Vice President ial debate taking place tomorrow in utah and a lot more on that discussion with Joel Goldstein from st. Louis University School of law and the author of the book, the white house vice presidency, the path to significance. Stick around for more of that discussion in just a couple minutes. First, the house is about to gavel in for a brief session. We will show it to you live and then we will be back on the other cited that other side of that. The speaker the house will be in order. Finally, dear lord, give the the virtue his body of courage in difficult times, charity in all times, and at the end of the day, the certain knowledge that hey have served the country well. Amen. Speaker pursuant to section 4 of House Resolution 967, the ournal of the last days proceedings is approved. The chair will lead the house in allegiance. That the Senate Passed without amendment h. R. 4183. Wishes, i am, signed robert l sincerely, f. Reeves, deputy clerk of the house. The speaker the chair announces light of se that in the resignation of the gentleman graves, the mr. Whole number of the house is 430. To section 4b of House Resolution 967, the house stands 10 00 a. M. , il friday, october 9, 2020. Host we are talking about tomorrow nights wifes president ial debate of campaign 2020 inviting viewers to join the discussion on phone lines split up by those who support the trumppence ticket, the biden harris ticket and those who are undecided. On the final line is joe who stuck with us through the pro forma session out of boston, massachusetts. Go ahead. Caller good morning. I had a question about the role of the vice presidency and the line of succession. If the president is incapacitated, the Vice President assumes as acting president. If the Vice President becomes also bill and unable to also ill, does it go to the speaker of the house . Host mr. Goldstein . Guest i was thinking of the same issue as we saw Speaker Pelosi just now. The president ial succession law passed duringwas the truman presidency and by a providesn congress that after the Vice President , the speaker of the house is next in line of the session. And then thete members of the president s cabinet in line of seniority of the cabinet positions. In any of those people to be line of president ial succession, they have to possess the constitutional qualifications to be president. In other words they have to be at least 35, 14 years a resident of the u. S. , and they have to be a natural born citizen. Law doesink that the make it clear that the speaker is next in line of president ial succession. A couple of complications. Whereas Section Three and four of the 25th amendment to the u. S. Constitution provides means whereby president ial powers and duties can be transferred from the president to the Vice President , they are written in a way that envisions the vice. Resident as the transferee in section four of the 20 for the minute which is the of thethat allows that thedment allows president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office. The Vice President is not only the transferee, but a necessary participant in the decision. There is no provision in law that sets out procedures as to how you would transfer power to the speaker of the house. There is also no provision in law as to how you would determine that a Vice President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the Vice President s office. Amendment was members of 1967, the congress who were the architects of it understood that there were amendment, buthe they determined that if they tried to solve all of problems in the system at that time that they would end up not being able to achieve any sort of constitutional amendment. So they focused on the major problem which was filling a Vice President ial vacancy and dealing with president ial inability. It is unfortunate that in the 53 years since the amendment was ratified, congress has not picked up this issue and resolved it. Host in new rochelle, new york. This is rosetta on the lines for those who support the biden harris ticket. Good morning. Caller good morning. Yes, i very much support biden and harris. Is a of all, pence follower of trump too much. Since he is the head of the task force, i would think that when trump came out of the hospital, especially since he is infected with this virus, that he would be on top of him not Walking Around giving photoops without a mask on. Why dont they make it when are they going to make it mandatory that everybody wears a mask . It is ridiculous. Becauseuld get on pence of this alone. Although i did not like him prior to the pandemic. Him or trump. It is laughable that he is still doing what he does and is able to continue to run for president for a second term. It is really up orange. Goldstein, dor you see it as an opening for Kamala Harris tomorrow . Guest absolutely. When Vice President pence assumed the chairmanship of the task force, it associated him with this problem and gave him a repsonsibility. When Vice President s take on a major portfolio, one of the risks is that they will be held accountable if the policies are not successful. I think Vice President pence will very much be held to answer for the record of the administration in terms of dealing with the pandemic. Is vicer point president s beginning with who wasand nixon president eisenhowers Vice President , Vice President s are loyal to the president. Part of their job in modern times is to be an administration spokesperson. Having said that, you have never had a Vice President who has rick uses in his praise of the president as Vice President pence. That has raised a question in some peoples minds as to what extent is he willing to contradict the president even in private discussions when that would be appropriate. Certainly the handling of the pandemic is one area where one might push back against some of the president positive statements and behavior in connection with it. Host leading besides leaving the Coronavirus Task force, what other issues are in Michael Pences portfolio . The trumply on in administration, he was put in looke of a commission to at voter fraud which was an issue that the president was insisting had taken place to his disadvantage in 2016. That task force quickly disbanded when they determined that there really was not anything out there. Involved with the National Aeronautic space administration, he has had some responsibilities there. You recall that the president at one point had talked about a space force and the Vice President was involved there. Playedr ways, he has more of a generalist role who has taken on assignments for the president. He has done an armed travel. He has been active in certain whenlative activities that the Trumpa Administration was trying to repeal the Affordable Care act, also known as obamacare, the Vice President was involved in lobbying on that issue. He was involved on other issues like that. He has been an administration spokesperson. Those are some of the issues he has been very involved in, some of the issues that are important to the Social Security social conservative base. Host out of massachusetts, this is john on the line for those penceupport the trump ticket. Caller i wanted to make a point about what the last caller said about President Trump taking his mask off. Senator cruz tweeted last night, who is he going to give covid to. He was not around anybody. That is beside the point. I think the Vice President pence strategy will be opposite of that of President Trumps. I think it would be more of a soothing voice. I think he will calm down the debate more and lecture a lot less. Biden and republicans like to call him sleepy joe. I think kamala will bring a Different Energy to the debate. Goldstein, what do you think . Guest i think the whole tenor of the debate will be quite different. We have never had a debate like the first president ial debate. Say thathris wallace the president had interrupted Vice President biden or mr. Wallace 145 times. That was really unusual. Gentleman is quite right. I think Vice President pence is going to present a very different demeanor than President Trump did. Their styles are entirely different. Has shownnator harris herself to be very effective in terms of discussing issues and i would expect her to discuss some of the criticisms that the biden campaign, that she and Vice President biden have of the trump record and also to articulate some of the vision of why it would make a difference when she and Vice President biden are elected as opposed to reelecting the president and Vice President. Twitter, whyion on has not senator harris resigned her seat . If you not confident of being not president is she confident of being Vice President . Candidatesonal party almost never resigned their seeds to run for president or Vice President resign their seats. 2012 when representative ryan who was a republican Vice President ial candidate, he not only was running on a republican ticket for Vice President , he was running for reelection to his seat in the house of representatives from wisconsin. When Joe Lieberman ran for Vice President in 2000 when lloyd benson ran in 1988, when lyndon they notan in 1960, only did not resign their seats, they were seeking reelection to the senate while they ran for office. Wherely time i can recall a major National Party candidate resigned his position to run for president or Vice President was in 1996. Senator bob dole was the majority leader of the senate. At a certain point, he resigned that position and he resigned as a senator to devote fulltime to the president ial campaign. That was in part because he found that serving as majority to be inth the demands the senate as frequently as he did was inconsistent with running for president. It would be entirely unusual for senator harris to resign from the senate to run for Vice President. Host columbus, ohio. This is john for those who support the biden harris ticket. Good morning. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. I appreciate it. Questionsask a few about michael pence. Mike pence. Did he keep quiet all these 43 senators without saying anything 43 years without saying anything . Mike pence is a very intelligent man. I do not feel he can be a variable leader. I feel he can be a very good leader. It is time that we have to Say Something most especially for this country. Leaders from our home country came over here because of the thing that america has done for us. The thingse, we see happening, it disappoints us. Host that is john in columbus, ohio. Professor goldstein, this idea of going after pence for not standing up to President Trump, will we be hearing that from senator harris tomorrow night . Guest i think that may be an issue. It has been one that several callers have mentioned. Say, Vice President are normally loyal to the president but that does not mean they should not push back when the president and Vice President are alone. President sthe vice beginning with mondale, one of the things that struck me is how often Vice President s of both parties in different ways have let the president know when they disagreed with positions that he was taking. Vice president dan quayle made it clear to bush that he bushsed with president decision to consider raising taxes as part of a budget package. President bush had ran on a platform at the Republican Convention of 1988 he famously said, read my lips, no new taxes. And backed off that pledge. Vice president quayle told him it was a mistake. Vice president quayle pushed for president bush to seek an authorization from congress before committing the United States to the persian gulf war to push the rock iraq out of kuwait. There are examples in each vice presidency. Vice President Biden made a point of making sure obama was fully informed about considerations dealing with american policy in afghanistan and really pressed the various generals who were advocating a troop surge and pressed them, challenged them on the arguments they were making. One of the things that is striking is that we have not really heard of instances in which Vice President pence has particularly given some of the problems with the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the fact that the Vice President has a leadership role there as well as other issues. I think that may be an issue that will be of concern to people in the debate tomorrow night. Michelsonessor earlier this month, a professor in Political Science in california wrote about the potential double standard that senator harris might face tomorrow night. This is what she wrote in her column. Harris is aware of the double standard she is going to face pence, a white man who does not receive criticism as harris has. There is this trove of the angry black woman and she knows she has to avoid that. Thoughts . Our tho guest i think that is certainly right. As i heard the questions about senator harris, the aggressor, that is part of the thought that went through my mind. Often times where a woman engages in the same sort of rhetoric that a man does in american politics, we label the woman as being aggressive and yet, we dont label the man that way. It really does reflect an unfairness. I think we are still working through the process of treating women in public life equally to men. I think it is a problem. Guerrero wastative a first woman to dissipate in a Vice President ial debate, she was cautioned not to appear too feisty. I think it is a challenge that often faced in public life and i am sure it would be one that senator harris will be presented with. Host 10 minutes left with Joel Goldstein this morning as we talk about the Vice President ial debate tomorrow night in utah. We will be covering on cspan. Taking your questions and comments. Dorothy has been waiting in illinois on the line for those who support the trumppence ticket. Go ahead. Caller yes. I have been listening about those issues. One issue that has not been brought up, they worry about trumps future health. For some reason the democrats have hidden the Health Issues of biden. In my opinion, he is a ticking time bomb. I am talking about in his brain. It happened once and it was severe. He speaks without prompters and things. When it happens again, it will be very serious. As far as im concerned, all of the readings i have done, it will mean death instantly or more impaired problems in the brain. Goldstein, back to this issue of the president ial candidates health. Guest the health of president ial candidates is certainly a legitimate issue. The health of president s is a legitimate issue. It is important that there be disclosures about the health of candidates and about president s. Medicationserms of that are being taken and particularly if those might have consequence and so forth, i am not a medical expert. My recollection is that the aneurysm that Vice President biden had was more than 30 years ago. Since that time im unaware that there has been a repetition. He served for a long time without a repetition. Im sure it is something that is monitored. Candidatepresident ial s health is important. I think right now the focus, the president has just been in the hospital for being treated with treated for a disease that has killed 210,000 americans. He has been treated with experimental drugs that have been used in a combination that has not been otherwise used and so that raises important , theions about the impact testing and so forth. I think that is why there has been a lot of attention to the president s treatment and health. Host mobile, alabama. This is bill on the line for those who support President Trump. Had extremelyhas low approval ratings. My question is during the debates, she accused joe biden of being a racist. My question is, is she lying . A couple of things. Onave not seen any polls senator harris since shortly after her selection. Theecollection was that polls after her selection indicated that her Favorability Ratings were actually pretty good, were better than the other national candidates. Senator harris did not accuse biden of being a racist. She specifically said, i dont think you are a racist. What she raised in the debate was the point that she disagreed with or was hurt by positions he when she was a young girl going to school. S think that senator harris statements since then is that whatever disagreements she had with Vice President biden on those issues, that they pale in comparison to her disagreements with the president with respect to his outlook on issues dealing with race. Host 541 or two more phone calls time for one or two more phone calls. Book, you can check that out as his work as st. Louis University School of law professor and on this program when we are talking about the issues of the Vice President. Trump isy problem with he did not want to do anything about the white supremacist groups. Hes proven many, many times that he is racist all throughout his whole four year term. What hest wondering plans on doing with the white supremacist groups . All of the hate that is going on. Professor goldstein, that issue and how it might play tomorrow night . Been one of the recurring issues and questions. One that came up again in the first president ial debate. President e of the then to denounce white. Upremacist groups standby. Vice president pence has very defensive style with respect to that issue. The different substance to his thatnts of im not aware Vice President pence has uttered this sort of statement that would suggest or leave somebody to question whether he is a trump. As has president i think Vice President pence has pretty conventional or i wouldn in his views expect a different tone on that issue from Vice President pence. The trickier question is when hes asked to defend what President Trump has said and often times what he does is that he denies that the president has or he emphasizes a later clarification and attempts to ignore the earlier statements and seems to be not denouncing the white supremacist groups. We have time for one last call. Because im calling really love my president and Vice President. They have a relationship towards each other. I think Kamala Harris is a very angry woman. I am make i am a native american woman, i am also german. Professor goldstein, i will give you the last minute and a half or so here on your expectations for tomorrow night. Vice president ial debates are always different than the president ial debates. It is only chance the two Vice President ial candidates have. They offer unpredictable elements. 1988president ial debate in was the one that produced the ant memorable line not only Vice President ial debates but president ial debates. Senator benson replied to senator quail, i knew jack kennedy, he was a friend of mine , do you know jack kennedy . There have been other debates. Bidenbate within senator and governor palin. Beenof them have interesting debates. I forget is more of a discussion of issues then the president ial debate. There will be considerable focus on the coronavirus pandemic. Also on the consequences of the nomination of judge barrett to the Supreme Court and how that might affect peoples lives. I did you will be an opportunity as much of Vice President pence and senator harris. They could increase their visibility and educate the American People. One of these people could be a heartbeat o away. Be a discussion of the issues from people who have different visions of america and american ideals. We will be expressing them. They are both effective spokespeople for their point of view. Im looking forward to listening to them. Host we will all find out together tomorrow night at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. You could watch the Vice President ial debate on cspan, cspan. Org or listen to it on the free cspan radio app. Always appreciate your time, thanks so much. President trump i just left Walter Reed Medical Center and it is something very special. The doctors, nurses, first responders. I learned so much about coronavirus. Certain, that is for do not let it dominate you. Dont be afraid of it. We will be it beat it. We have the best medical equipment, test medicines, all developed recently. I went and didnt feel so good. Two days ago ifo great, better than i have in a long time i felt great. Better than 20 years ago. Dont let it dominate. Dont let it take over your lives. We are the greatest country in the world. We are going back to work. We will be out front. I know there is danger to that, i had to do it. I stood out front and i led. Nobody would not do what i did. The vaccines are coming momentarily. Thank you very much. Walter reed, what a group of people. Thank you. Biden from hisoe twitter feed. None of the president is busy tweeting campaign messages, i would ask him to listen to the scientists, support mask mandates nationwide. Tweeting out this saying simply wear our mask. A video of him putting on a mask. Taking your phone calls, your thoughts on coronavirus. In the wake of the president s we have a color on the line for democrats. Caller trump does not care about anybody but himself. He has been selfish by not wearing a mask and contaminating other people. I think we are in trouble. If everybody in the government get sick, he is like typhoid mary but he doesnt care. Host we are up to 12 cases so. Ar spokeswoman Kayleigh Mcenany yesterday acknowledging her positive Coronavirus Diagnosis. Also two members of the White House Press team tested positive as well we found out yesterday. Virus that was able to get into the white house, which is supposed to be super secure. We have our president go into the hospital, get out within just a very few days. Newsback, have a conference where hes not wearing a mask. How bad is this stuff . Already to me like it has killed hundreds of thousands of people. We dont seem to be taking that serious. What do you make of that message . Is im what im doing totally isolating myself. Im 78 years old. m very vulnerable i know this is killing people. I feel like if i get it im going to die. I dont have all of the resources that President Trump has. I think he has to realize we are just ordinary people. Us being at a of News Conference without a mask is more likely that we will be in the hospital barely able to breathe. You cast your vote, are you having second thoughts . , im an interest man. Theres no way i could the interests the democrats support are not something that i could in any way agree with. Dont provide health care for our own people how could we say we are going to provide it for illegal aliens . Cannot continue to support everybody. Weve got to have a nation that works and that contributes. I just wish there was some way that we could come together as , i dont see any of that happening in the near future. Host the president s departure from walter reed plays out like something as a flipbook if you go through the front pages of the National Papers this morning. Heres the picture they chose to put on their front page. Thewall street journal moment the president departed through the golden doors there. In the wake of that experience do you think the president will be able to go to this debate next week . Will he be able to get back out on the campaign trail . Caller my experience with what i had, no. I was sick for two weeks and slowly got better. I didnt have access to all of these drugs. I went to the hospital and they said unless you really cant breathe, they sent me home. Sick, president is truly hes downplaying it. That is not good for the american public. We were petrified. We have considerations for other human beings, we love life, we want others to live. We went through it. The president does not get it. He should tell supporters that this is a serious thing. You could fight it in the hospital with all kind of medical care. Host that is john in pennsylvania this morning. You live in a bubble appear. No one around here wears masks. They are very trump centric. Is that of the matter the tragedy of this from what i could observe is it is going to take somebody to die around here , which is a terrible thing to say but it is the only thing i could fathom. It will take somebody to die around here that we know for us to get the memo. Host before this would you have said it will take the president getting this to get the memo . Caller he has no common sense. He is playing to his base. He is playing to his constituents. Taking that hook, line, and sinker. It is a terrible thing. Friends who are very much to the right.
