I was raised by grandparents, with a fourth grade and eighth grade education. I went to yale, i went to georgetown law school. I worked on capitol hill be right i worked for the private sector. Now im a candidate for United States senate. Excuse me if i pinch myself. I have lived the American Dream and spent my entire life fighting for others to make sure they do the same. We have been divided for too long. Too many folks here in South Carolina lack the opportunity to live the American Dream themselves. Tonight, you will probably hear from Lindsey Graham and he will scare you to vote for him. I hope tonight to inspire you to support me. Thank you, sir. Senator graham, you have one minute. Sen. Graham you have nothing to be afraid of. Thank you for tuning in. Thank you to everybody who has gotten me here. We live in difficult times. 2020 is the most incredible year. We are being challenged like no other time. Coronavirus has turned our state and our nation upside down. Mr. Harrison lost an aunt. The president of United States is in the hospital as i speak. We are going to get through this. When i was 21, my mom died and 15 months later my dad died and i was in charge of a 13yearold sister. But i made it. We got the drug therapies that are working, a vaccine is around the corner. This is a big choice of an election. Capitalism versus socialism. Conservative judges versus liberal judges. Law and order versus chaos. You know where i stand. Thank you very much. Gentlemen, thank you for being here this evening. It is our hope and expectation to give our nation an example of what civil discourse looks like, and how to engage in passionate, but respectful debate. So i thank you for that in advance. Senator graham, the first question to you. In the last 24 hours the list of Public Officials infected by covid19 has grown exponentially. People of faith and goodwill are praying for everyone infected to make a full recovery. Thatt cannot be ignored many of the people infected attended large gatherings and completely disregarded the protocols put out by the cdc. Hasquestion is, how politicization of the virus response federally and in our state . President wilson got the spanish flu after world war i be rated world war i. I doubt anyone attacked him. All i can say is the the virus is a problem that came out of china and not trump tower. We are getting vaccines ready any month now hopefully sooner. , the drug therapies are working. The one thing i want people to know is that the virus is serious, but we have to move on as a nation. When a military member gets an infection you do not shut down the whole unit. We are going to have a hearing for Amy Coney Barretts, the nominee of the Supreme Courts it will be done safely. , the one thing i find odd, nobody asked me how are you doing, senator graham went to when 200 people showed up and broke my window. My liberal democratic friends never mention the virus when people are roaming the streets rioting and burning down cop cars and breaking windows, it is a problem, it is a problem for the nation, it is something we are going to get through, but i promise you we are not going to stop doing our job in washington. That is the story that so Many Americans are experiencing right now. And part of why we are experience at, no, we are not going to blame the president. We should not blame anybody for the inception of this disease. But where blame should come is how we handled this disease, whether or not we take it seriously. I am taking it seriously. That is why i put this plexiglass up. It is not just about me, it is about the people in my life i have to take care of as well, my two boys, my wife, my grandmother. We have to address the issue here in South Carolina. We have had 750,000 people unemployed because of south care in South Carolina. We had 3000 die, over a hundred thousand affected. Lets take this seriously and do all we can to take care of ourselves and each other. I want to ask the next question, a followup about coronavirus and the impact specifically here in South Carolina. Governor mcmaster asked South Carolina schools to resume five days facetoface instruction and i have talked to teachers and parents who want to do the same if it is done safely. Here is the concern. Senator graham, you and your colleagues had a coronavirus test yesterday or today, and other officials we are hearing about. You get results in hours. In South Carolina people are , waiting for days or more than a week to get results. We know how critical that is, in terms of containing the virus. The question is, should we ask our teachers to return to class for five day facetoface instruction without having access to widespread Rapid Testing to quickly identify and contain those cases in schools . Sen. Graham i think we should allow parents to make a decision about what is best for their children and if a teacher does not want to go back to a classroom, i will not make them. I have supported the distillation that increased on appointment benefits because people lost her job through no fault of their own. I have been trying to get our ppe, masks, gloves, back in america and let American Textile Companies Make it here at home so we are not so dependent. Medicare for wall takes away your private health care. They are going to stack the Supreme Courts. You have to understand what is at stake here. And if nobody has an appreciation of teachers, or did not before coronavirus, they better have an appreciation now. We need a strategy. A 50 state strategy. The failure of leadership we are not blaming anybody for the inception of this virus but the failure of leadership, the senate failed to act. The white house failed to act. Governors have failed to act. We need leaders who are going to step up and act. We need testing here in South Carolina. We need to make sure we have a mandate that says folks, please wear your mask so we can bring down the transmission of this virus, and then open our economy back up. Right now, so many families have so many issues they are dealing with. 750,000 people unemployed. Senator graham said over our dead bodies would we allow extension of the unemployment benefit. Folks need that money and we need leadership to get those things that are necessary for our families to open back up. Moderator you have 45 seconds for a rebuttal. Sen. Graham i supported phase 3 but i said if you pay people more work not to work then to wear, it will be a problem and it turned out to be true. Joe cunningham understands, a democrat in charleston, and is it has been hard on hotels to get back in business when youre paying people more to be unemployed than to be employed. I want to help people and be responsible and i want us to go back to school. We passed a very robust package. Im willing to do more. But ladies and gentlemen, this virus is going to pass. What kind of country are you what kind of country are you going to have when liberal democrats run the house, and the senate and take over the white house . Governor mcmaster has said protocols are in place at the department of employment to make sure benefits are terminated for anyone who refuses to return to work, so a lot of people we have heard from want to understand why you are taking that position if we are putting protocols into prevent your concern . Sen. Graham well it helps to a baxley run a business. My family has run a restaurant, a bar and a liquor store. When you are paying 23 an hour not to work it is hard to get people to come back and they get mad if you asked them to come back to work for 18 an hour. I saw this coming and joe understands that what we have done is if you pay people more not to workbench work, i have run a business and i know what it is like to compete your own government. I can say for Small Business in South Carolina we have to be generous to people who have been unemployed through no fault of their own but you cannot pay them or not to workbench work and im for making you whole not forgetting a pay raise and unemployment and my liberal democratic friends do not understand that, i do and my family ran a business. Senator, your Judiciary Committee will hold hearings on Amy Coney Barrett the judge barrett, the president s nominee, for the United States Supreme Court and there is a good chance that she would be confirmed on the high court which would give the Supreme Court a definite tilt toward the conservative side. Confirmed, that conservative tilt there is talk ,ould do away with roe v. Wade the law which guaranteed women the right to an abortion. If it does not do away with that and overturn it completely and might chip away at it. Mr. Harrison, senator graham, my question is does a woman in this country have the right to control her own body . Abortion . E wants an moderator mr. Harrison . Mr. Harrison i believe she does. Men have rights to control their bodies and women should have equal rights to control their bodies as well. At the end of the day this is a hard issue. I believe it is between a woman, her doctor and her god. Politician should not be anywhere in it. We need to make sure that abortions should be rare. We should look at how we expand adoptions. How we have contraception and educate our kids. But at the same time we should be safe. If it is the law of the land which is at this time. What we need to do is look at health care. And particularly health care for women. Here in South Carolina we have some of the highest infant mortality rates in the country. Two years ago here in South Carolina 14 of our 46 counties had no, zero obgyn. Many of our hospitals and some of our world committees are closing now. Many hospitals in some of our Rural Communities are closing. What are we going to do do tackle disparities in health care that women and minority women in particular are experiencing now . Senator graham has a failed and 25 years to address these issues. Moderator senator graham . Mr. Harrison well, amy barrett is one of the most qualified people in the history of the nation to be nominated and she will get on the court as the chairman of the Judiciary Committee ive tried to be fair when it comes to judges and when president obama won, i recognize he won the election and i voted for some ir and kagan knowing that they were liberal justice i voted for Justice Sotomayor Justice Kagan knowing that they would be liberal justices. But heres what bothers me. My opponent, supported the filibuster of George Justice gorsuch and the [indiscernible] judge kavanaughs life. You made a promise to the American People and you made a promise to the folks in South Carolina you would not be doing what youre doing right now, and that is the problem i have. I think the greatest heresy you could do as a Public Servant is to betray the trust of the people you took notes to serve. That is what you have you took it out to serve. And that is what you have done. Or the amount and stand up and say im going to do Something Else. But dont go and blame it on Something Else for flipflop youre making on yourself. Good evening, i want to continue to talk about coronavirus. Tourism is the number one industry where i am from myrtle beach. The truth is we are coming off a bleak Summer Season and going into what looks to be a weak fall and winter season as well. The bottom line is covid19 has paralyzed our community. Restaurants, businesses, hotels have closed, some permanently. My question to you is, as senator, what would you do to bring back our number one moneymaker . One, we cannot take a piecemeal approach. In new zealand right now it is a most covid free. That is because the leader there along with local leaders took a direct approach to address this issue. They made sure yes there was a difficulty initially, but what they have now, you do not to the spread of covid. In addition, when we think about we are in the situation we are in because we had feckless leadership, so how do we make it better . How do we address issues folks in myrtle beach are dealing with . You do not do it by blocking the unemployment relief. Because you know what . Theres a dignity of work in this state. It is not that people are sitting on thereabouts any bonbons or they wait for the federal benefit to come into their doors. Of those folks lost their jobs, former thousand also lost their health insurance. 400,000 also lost their employerbased health insurance. Now they have to take care of kids and have to pay for internet, but they have to dig deeper to figure out how to pay rent and how to pay health insurance. I want to help people who have lost her job through no fault of their own. But the unemployment benefit package deters people going back to work. I want to help the states but not bail them out for things unrelated to covid. What would i do to save Social Security . Whatever it takes. I remember sitting at the Social Security office with my grandma because our thought was that she would get both her check and my grandfathers check but the woman said youll get a death benefit which was about 300 in my grandma said when will i start getting willys check . And the woman said you will not. You will get the higher of the two. And it was like some of the punch my grandma and i got because she was thinking oh my, how do i pay for all these things . Folks deserve the money that they have put into this system. Lindsey graham said, he said that Social Security and medicare are promises we can keep. Senator, i am sorry they are not promises. People have paid into the systems. They deserve to get the money back they put into it. That is the livelihood they have. Sen. Graham man . Then, someone who personally has been homeless for a while, i took personal offense to this idea. Senator graham wants to talk about foreclosures we can talk about how he voted for the guy who was called the king of foreclosures, treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin foreclosed on 17,000 homes over a fiveyear period. Sen. Graham richard your question was about ads and money, lets talk about money in politics. Where is all this money coming from . What is about South Carolina that is attracted hundred Million Dollars into mr. Harrisons coffers . They hate me. This is not about mr. Harrison. I stood up for kavanaugh when they tried to destroy his life and this is not meet helping donald trump. The only good republican is one that tries to undercut trump. I lost to President Trump when i ran for president and if you do not member me running for president , that is not your file, itd not last long. I think he has done a good job, he has cut our taxes and he is getting trade deals and securing the border so the bottom line, the reason you are seeing all of these ads is they are trying to take me out. They want the house. They want the senate. They are going to change electoral college. There are going to do away with private health care and medicare for all. More transparency, more people of color, more people from minority communities in the police force. It was blocked by my democratic colleagues because they want the issue. Heres what i think, the cops need our support now more than ever and ive never known at this difficult to be a police officer. Yesterday the fraternal order of police endorsed my candidacy because as chairman of the Judiciary Committee i passed the [indiscernible] he was asked twice would you defund the police . He is for not defunding the police because i made him. Most carolina and swat place reform and we ask we respect the cops most carolinas want Police Reform and we respect the cops. If you need money for social programs i will work with you. Cutting the cops budget puts more people at risk. Tim scott has tried his best to find a solution. Unfortunately my democratic colleagues stopped him because they want not to solve the problem. Moderator mr. Harrison . Mr. Harrison let me be clear because again senator graham sometimes exaggerates. I have said clearly and i am going to say it clearly here, i do not believe in defunding the plague. Defunding the place. Defunding the police. On thedfather served force 30 years on homicides risking his life day in and day out so i understand there are good plays out there working to protect and serve. We also understand there are bad apples. Theres an entire community a blue when sometimes light comes behind them because they do not know whether or not their lives are going, theyre going to have their lives after the interaction. We have to admit there are problems in some of our policing now and we have to work with our police and the Community Members to bring folks together to do that. Not to define them, not to scare them, to work on addressing this problem. One question i have for you, and you said youre not for defunding police, in President Trumps budget, fy 21, it cuts Community Policing by 500 Million Dollars. Do you support that, senator grant senator graham . Sen. Graham no, ive been a good supporter of Community Policing and i would say that senator scott understands this above others. He goes through great grief, he tries to fix the problem. Campaign,rrisons planned parenthood supports his campaign. Once the police to apologize to africanamerican communities. I want to make policing better for africanamerican communities. Of all the people in the nation who need good cops, it is poor people in minority neighborhoods so im with the cops. Senator let me say, senator scott is not the only black person who understands the interactions with place. Ive had my interactions as well. I have voice tried my best to follow a lot because that is what my grandma taught me to do and that is why grandpa taught me to do. There are problems right now. There are families who have lost loved ones as a result of it. All im saying is, we should have had, you shouldve had, you are chairman of the did share committee, a hearing on the bill. Graham all i can say senator scott has a proposal that he tried to take to the floor of the senate and i had a hearing that lasted all day and i do not care. This is an effort to get africanamerican males and hispanic males out of jail that will wear sentenced to long jail terms for nonviolent offenses and i was one of the leading sponsors about working with senator booker from new jersey. Tim scott has done everything i know anybody could do to try to sound common ground. His efforts were filibustered, it is sad, shame, this whole issue about the cops, law and order is on the ballot and i was talking with cops yesterday. They feel like people dont care anymore. A few weeks ago i announced my rural hope agenda to rebuild and revitalize Rural Communities here in South Carolina, to bring hope back to these communities that have lost all sense of hope. It is a fivepart plan that talks about health care, education, infrastructure, Economic Opportunities and it includes a farmers bill of rights. Part of my Education Initiative talks about a partnership with historically black colleges and universities that focuses on creating a new stream of revenue , having auniversities partner with Rural Communities. To provide them with technical assistance. To make sure their incubators for new businesses, or communities were young folks and minorities have not been represented. Communities particularly where young folks and minorities have not been representative. To rebuild schools and make sure theres a pipeline of young talent vertically from hbcus which have been left out given thely, opportunity so the rest of the country can see them shine. Sen. Graham hbcus are blessing to our state and a lot of students who go to the historically black colleges and universities are first in their family to go to college. I can relate to that. The goal is to make char best and brightest do not leave the state. Nobody has been more supportive of the Savannah River site and i have. It is the crown jewel of one of our players in the state. Hbcue done job fairs with graduates with the military, fbi, boeing, michelin, to make sure that talent is not leave our state. The bottom line here is the schools have been a blessing. This program youre talking about is very exciting. South carolina state has an engineer and program, one of the best asphalt management programs in the country. My sister has a masters degree from South Carolina state, go bulldogs. So count me in. I am glad President Trump made hbcu finding permanent. Funding permanent. These schools are blessing and what i want to do as a senator is what ive done in the past to make sure roger its of these universities do not have to leave our state to make sure graduates do not have to leave our state, the best and the brightest. If you support term limits and what will be an appropriate one for a senator and representative . Sen. Graham i will leave that up to the voters. You can limit my term november 3 if you like. We have a history in south thurmond, fritz holling, jim clyburn. Ive been to iraq and afghanistan 56 times to make sure the war stays over there. I have the military members back and i think i know more about National Security and most people in the senate and we have a Strong Department of defense footprint in the state. I understand the needs of the i want them to come here. I think im in a good position to help our state. It is up to to see if you want me. Where one of 14 states in the entire country that refuses to expand medicaid. So, mr. Harrison, senator graham, my question is, the Affordable Care act worth it . Do you want to do away with the Affordable Care act . Or do you want to keep it and expand medicaid to help poor people in South Carolina . Moderator first you, mr. Harrison.
