Ronnatee headquarters is mcdaniel. I want to begin with the issue that is a key part of your job to make sure voters get to the polls either in early voting or on election day. This coronavirus in key states of michigan where you are from, how are you dealing with that . Guest we were virtual and state are shutting down in down in the coming ofand wewere coming up of particles to make sure they both available and now weve switched back to a fully enforced ground game. Knocking on doors and all the in all the battleground states. We have the infrastructure in place already and now we are knocking on about a million doors a week. Host are you worried about this before and taking precautions with coronavirus . Guest we are taking the safety and Health Precautions necessary. We made sure that there was ppe available and that all the procedures were being put in place and now weve gone to the full ground game and we feel really good about it. We obviously are cognizant of the homeowners and making sure we are putting their safety first, but so far thereve been no issues. Host let me ask you about some news about the president. He said, we are going to see what happens from your standpoint, what does that mean . Of course the president is going to accept the results of the election, but i think the president is concerned, as amide, about many of the laws across the country being changed by democrats that are undermining the ability to get results, allowing ballots to be counted in some cases up to 14 days past election day, and i think these are real concerns we have. This is why we are engaged in many lawsuits across the country. I dont understand why democrats are systematically in such an uncertain time, with our country so divided, going statebystate and trying to undermine the integrity of the selection, especially when dr. Fauci has said it is safe to vote in person. Michigan they had a Million People vote in their primary and there was no uptick in the coronavirus, democrats are undermining many of the have been vetted and tried and true. I think it will insert chaos into Election Night. Host for those that prefer to mail in their ballot, do you have a problem with that . Guest it is a real difference between somebody proactively asking for an absentee ballot , which every state has an absentee process. Thats part of the verification , asking for a ballot. Versus a state shifting the procedure to all mail in mailin ballots and sending them to those that have not been checked to see if people have moved away or passed away. Those are concerns we have, especially in states that dont have the infrastructure to handle the influx of mail in those are concerns weve seen in voting. The primaries play out this day where theyew jersey, now have to redo an election. In new york. These are precursors to what we think is going to happen on election day as many of these states are changing election laws onthefly without the infrastructure to handle these significant, significant changes. Host to that point, the president is calling this a democratic scheme and corruption. Where is the corruption . Where is it happening specifically . Guest i think it is worrying to see states like nevada say, not only are we going to expand ballot harvesting, but live ballots. We saw a lot of problems where apartmentre littering building floors or garbage cans. Every voter should have certainty in the election process. Democrats systematically are suing to get rid of things like verification, voter id. They want to expand ballot harvesting, which, i dont know how that would be considered safe during coronavirus, if democrats are saying voting in person is in safe. Why are we going door to door to collect them any safer . States have the president is eliminated in person voting. Right to say democrats are inserting havoc and chaos into this election cycle. Host we have been hearing this could be the most litigated election in history. How is the rnc getting ready for those court challenges, if they have been . Guest we have been in many some court cases. Some of them have been codified. You have dark money paying democrats to legislature and sue a state, then the democratic governor says, thats what you want us to do . We will change the law. As close to 90 days out from an election. Is harder when its codified into law. Voters should be very alarmed by this. We are suing where we can. We are creating a election day operations team. I think this also shows why it is so vital that we have that right seat felt on the Supreme Court, because there are going to be, i believe, many court cases after election day. Host as you know, that was a very different argument four years ago, when it was by members of your own party. Guest it was a different argument because of the scalia vacancy and a different majority in the senate and a democrat in the executive branch. The voters made a choice. They knew there was a Supreme Court vacancy. They chose a republican at the executive level and to control the senate. They wanted republicans to fill that vacancy. Just because they are 40 days out from an election, doesnt mean you stop governing. I cant think of a time more pivotal that we have that critical night vote so that we dont get into a tie with an election that is going to be as litigated as this one is. Host but do you understand the argument for those that say there is hypocrisy because we heard senator graham and senator mcconnell said four years ago and now of course it is a different situation with republicans in control of the senate, but do you see their argument . Guest they have been clear about that Mitch Mcconnell said since the beginning. If you have a legislative branch controlled by a Different Party senate, and an executive by a democrat, we should wait. But when both are from the same party and voters made that decision, you need to follow the will of the voters. We need a third branch of government fully staffed. Joe biden has said that himself. That the branch should be fully staffed. I think it is more concerning to see democrats saying, if we dont get what they want and you do what is constitutionally mandated for you to do to fill that Supreme Court vacancy, that we are going to impeach you. That we are going to stack the Supreme Court. I think that joe biden needs to come out and talk about where he stands on that issue. Its frightening to see democrats say, if we dont put we want when we are not in power, youre going to change the rules and change the way this country has been governed. Host with the understanding of the decision being up to the Supreme Court justice, but bush v gore, that the outcome would be dependent on the u. S. Supreme court, do you think a justice appointed by President Trump should recuse himself or herself . Guest im not going to get into that. Thats going to be up to the senate and the president. I think it is critical that we have that ninth justice. I expect that they will follow the law and be able to adjudicate that way. Host what are you expecting Election Night . What are you thinking a month out . Guest obviously looking at my ground game right now. I was on the ground in ohio and kentucky and michigan recently. The energy is very strong but we are going to keep working until election day. We want to make sure we are making the case. Four more years. President trump deserves hes the right person to rebuild our economy, because he has done it before. Joe biden has been in washington for 47 years, never started a business, never held a job outside of washington and says he is going to raise taxes on 82 of american families. Those are the messages we want to get out and this army that we have trained, the 2000 staffed we have on the ground is going to be our mechanism to talk to voters to make sure we are getting them out and voting republican on election day. Host the debates begin tuesday. How is the president preparing . Guest the president is always talking to the press. He is doing events every night. Hes going to do his own preparation, but again, this is not a president who has been avoiding reporters day after day. This is a president who has been more accessible than any other president. On the lawn of the white house taking questions with news briefings. I think he will be ready for this debate. Host does the Supreme Court vacancy mobilized Republican Voters . Does it help for those who might be on the fence . In 2016 there were definitely voters in michigan that were motivated the Supreme Court vacancy. They wanted republicans and they wanted a republican president just based on that. And i think there will be those voters this cycle as well. I will say the energy we have seen has been unprecedented. I feel like theres more energy on the ground than we had in 2016. As i am traveling the country with volunteer signups and all the things im seeing on the ground. I dont know if it takes much more to motivate them, but certainly this may help with some of the voters dont care so much about the Supreme Court and the generational implications that vacancy will have. Host chairwoman mcdaniel, lets turn our attention to the u. S. Senate, because republicans are defending more seats this cycle. What states concern you the most . What races are you most worried about . Guest we have pretty much the opposite of what we had in 2018. We have seats we want to make sure we hold. Cory gardner is a battleground. Martha mcsally, susan collins, i think those are three that everybody acknowledges tom tellis. Obviously, joni ernst. We have pickup opportunities in alabama. John james is a breakout candidate in michigan, doing incredibly well. We are not just trying to hold our seats. We are looking to pick up seats as well. Host what worries you the most. Most . Guest i cant say that. I dont want to make our candidates think im worried about their race. I feel good about the ground game, certainly some of these are going to be gained. The weve been looking at numbers coming from the president s reelection campaign. Do you have financially what the party needs for advertising and the final push . Guest we absolutely have the resources we need to get through this campaign. The difference is we have raised record money and more than the dnc since the beginning of 2019. We have been investing in a ground game. That is why you are seeing stories like, republicans are outregistering democrats in north carolina, because having that ground game and understanding cant pop up a ground game a week for an election, having people the able to knock and be trained to talk to their neighbors in their own neighborhood is so impactful. And we have been building that for years, so i feel very good about where we are on the infrastructure side of things and the campaign will have the resources it needs to get the commercials up and reelect the president. Host you mentioned commercials. As somebody that understands politics, is there a point of diminishing returns when it comes to advertising versus the ground game to mobilize voters . To mobilize voters . Or other efforts guest i think it is kind of the whole. Cosystem there are diminishing returns as tv gets saturated. More to getpay enough views for it to stick in a boaters head. Voters got to use head. Then you have to use digital, male. Its common sense if you are knocking on your friends your door, and those folks come in, for those early votes. I think it is the whole ecosystem needs to be running at full strength and we certainly have that. Ads we are seeing a lot of from the lincoln project, including from your predecessor. Some of those at taking aim at senator enzi graham. Whats your reaction . Senator lindsey graham. Whats your reaction . Guest its disappointing. I dont know how you can hold republican ideals like cutting regulation, Energy Independence , better trade deals strengthening the military, all , these things President Trump has done and then say i am abandoning the Republican Party and no longer want those things as democrats are espousing a path toward socialism, more government control, more taxes, more regulation, taking away private healthcare, the list goes on and on. I dont understand it. I think it is distressing. Certainly we are going to do everything we can to make sure we have degrees. Host does that divide the gop . That effort . Guest i think that group is smaller and smaller. They are just more vocal and get more attention because they are nevertrumpers. I know people who were concerned 2016,the president in know is he really going to put rule of law justices on the Supreme Court . They have come around. His support among the republican is record high. That is evidenced by the enthusiasm, not just to the volunteers, but organically. The car parades and conversations everybody is having across the country or people say, he really did delever and he has done the things he promised. I think republicans recognize he has been such a strong president for republican ideals and pushing them forward. Host as you look at your home state and he looked at the returns coming out on november 3, what part of the state is going to be a real bellwether for you and the president . County will be. Makem county is the county. Veryone got wrong in 2016 locally we knew something was happening. That is a bellwether county that went for reagan. It had been democrat for decades, then went for trump. Also Oakland County and wayne county, the most populous area. The whole state is really mobilized right now. The energy on the ground. Those will be the counties i will be looking at. Host we are a very divided country, so regardless of what happens on election day, do you envision any role you and your counterpart would play, whatever the wounds left after the results coming in november . Guest i always want to see our country more united. I think as a mom, somebody who has friends and family on both sides of the aisle politically, we dont want to see this division. I feel like it has been unfortunate to see democrats refuse to accept the election of donald trump, or cutting the boycotting the inauguration. Things this president has had to deal with have not been good for our country. Hopefully, no matter what we can the greatest country on earth come together because we live in the greatest country on earth and i want to see it continue so that American Dream is available for my kids. And we need to do that working together. Host when you talk about those divisions, does the president with his tweets and tone bear any responsibility . Guest ive never seen a president have to deal with what this president has dealt with. You can talk about tweets all you want fine. Before he was even elected there were potential spies embedded in fisa warrants against people in his campaign, that there were his campaign, that the Obama Administration didnt just take him aside and say we are worried about these foreign actors, will you work with us . So concerning to me. That is that would have solved so many problems. And then to see him elected and democrats never work with this president. Ive never seen anything like it. You talk about the peaceful transfer of power we didnt have that. Morew we are going to see of that through this Supreme Court nomination. What they did to Justice Kavanaugh was one of the saddest times in our political history, see the character assassination of him. We hope we dont see that but this next nominee. Host what is your message to democrats and what should democrats tell republicans in terms of the deep divisions we have . Guest i dont think they are listening to me right now, what i will give you this. A little anecdote. I dont know how much time you have. I kids school had a website that went out how to Trump Supporters to harass them. My kids, of course, where the first ones put on that site. And a really strong democrat supporter called my daughter that night and said, this is wrong, this is not what we should do to people in this country. You deserve to have your opinion and be respected and they took the site down together. I wish we did that more as adults. We should be able to have differences of opinion and not be vitriolic and hateful and divisive. Hopefully we can get to a more civil discourse in the future. Host lets spend our remaining minutes talking about you. What has been the biggest learning curve in terms of your role . Guest a known person. I think initially i wasnt a known person. Fundraising was something i was incredibly concerned about, because i was not a national figure. Traveling the country, talking to investors, explaining why it was so important to invest in the rnc was the biggest hurdle, because i cant do anything if we dont have money. Theres no ground game. I think that was a big learning curve. And obviously being in washington and understanding the city is a little bit different , but ive enjoyed every step of the way. And i have been lucky to have a president who has been so supportive, which has made any challenge i face much easier. Host do you envision that you would stay on after the election . Guest i cant answer that question. I just want to win the election and get a great vacation after. Because i need to see my husband and my kids. Host any interest in running for Political Office . [laughter] guest im not going to answer the question. Honestly, im not even thinking about that. I am not even thinking about that right now. Host your maiden name is romney , and im curious what were the political discussions like growing up . Guest my middle name is romney became mye name maiden name. It remains my middle name. We had a lot of discussions around the sunday dinner table. My grandfather was the former governor of michigan, he lived right next door. I didnt know that it was unusual to have political discussions and sometimes they were heated in our family. My grandfather always talked about the importance of getting involved and never taking this country for granted. I just love this country and i love getting involved and i did it at a Grassroots Level and ended up running the Republican National committee. Host why did you decide to become chair of the committee and also chair of the michigan Republican Party . Guest i started as a precinct delegate. Local politics. I was really engaged in that and served on my district committee, state committee, National Committee woman. Part of my passion for becoming michigan chair as i felt like our state had been ignored, had become a flyover state for president ial candidates for far too long. Then this candidate came along. Onald trump i said, you can win michigan. He kept coming back and we won and broke history and was offered the role to take over great challenge. The rnc and it has been a great challenge. It hasnt just been leaning in , it has been diving in headfirst, but i enjoy every minute of it. Host final question. What has been your biggest contribution to the rnc in the last four years . Guest part of my legacy will be the creation of one red, a small dollar fundraising platform. The democrats have had that for 15 years. We did not have that. , ihave that put together think, is going to be instrumental for candidates. Then the prospecting we did early on to expand our email list. Financial outlay, but it has allowed us to fund raise at a small dollar level like we never have before. I think those will be the two biggest assets i will be leaving behind. Obviously it was part of a whole team effort here. The Ronna Mcdaniel is chair of the Republican National committee. We thank you for your time. Guest thanks for having me. Said that theo we key to restoring confidence in our traditions and our institutions was Public Officials who would stand up and tell the American People exactly what they thought. To paraphrase what i said that day in 1972, i mean to be that candidate. I will fight for you with every breath in my body and i will never, ever let you down.
