Latest night, im going to start with you. Give us an overview of your fact check of last night. Glenn were running out of superlatives during the Republican Convention. One night we called it the tsunami of untruths. For trump we called it a tidal wave of tall tales false claims and revisionist history. Thats certainly what we saw. We did 25 separate claims of false or misleading statements that fact checked false or misleading statements the president made and that was probably just scratching the surface. Did 25 separate claims of false or misleading state that fact check we wrote book on his false statements and hes lived up to his reputation as someone that will say things not based in any reality. We have heard to our mind listening to the president s speech, theres a lot of things ive heard before. Im wondering for you as a factchecker, did you hear anything new that needed to be fact checked . Jonathan glenn, that reminds me , listening to the president s speech, im wondering for you as , did you hear anything new that needed to be fact checked . we fact to mend also the democrats on a daily basis. We were pretty well prepared. Cash bail,ne about he was criticizing biden for supporting a policy that governor Chris Christie of new jersey has implemented. That popped up in the past week, but we were prepared because we had seen he started to say that. Otherwise, it is a litany of his golden oldies, the greatest economy in the world history, passed, est tax cut ever or falsehoods such as biden supports defunding the police,. Hich biden does not biden would wipe out the suburbs or cancel the suburbs, which you could argue maybe that is overheated rhetoric, but it is false. Jonathan one thing left out ed out at me that the president said, that he has perhaps done more things for africanamericans and abraham lincoln. Glenn we gave him for pinocchios, our worst rating, for that. I consulted with historians are literally just laughed into the phone. He has done things to help africanamericans, but at the top you would have lyndon johnson, who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the Voting Rights act of 1965, harry truman desegregated the army. Abraham lincoln freed the slaves. But it is thick it is typical the waste trump will cast himself as some sort of superhero that has done amazing deeds that no one has ever done. Efore jonathan michelle, last night we saw something we have never seen in modern american history, a president of the united date using the white house and the as a backdrop for his except insta renomination of the office. We have been talking all week about the hatch act and violations. My opinions colleague said no big deal, nothing to see, but you wrote about potential hacked potential hatch act violations committed by federal employees like eve trump, the president s daughter. Talk about your reporting on whether those employees put themselves in any legal jeopardy . Shall all week, michelle all week, we saw the president using the powers of the presidency for political purposes like a pardoning ceremony, a citizenship ceremony, and it culminated with last night at the backdrop of the white house, we saw it happening on the south lawn. Through my reporting, i found out that although the hatch act, the civil provisions do not apply to the president or the Vice President , there are criminal provisions in the hatch act that can apply. So there is plain ending about whether the president violated criminal provisions. We will see where that goes. It does apply to federal and this would be the people who set up the event on the south lawn, the people who worked in scheduling, all that applies to them. There is already a complaint about this now. We have seen the president bltty much below off ow off the hatch act many times. Under the president ial under President Trump administration, a huge number of increases in the number of violations against the hatch act. This is a continuation of what we have seen under President Trump, which is that that hatch is a beltway phenomenon that the hatch act is about a phenomenon that really dont care about and so it shouldnt apply. Jonathan you mentioned a complaint has been filed. Who has filed hatch act complaints against the administration . Who has standing . Has standing. Ne the office of special counsel, which is a separate office of the doj, the Office Investigates complaints. They usually dont go proactively to find these violations. The current complaint is filed against the president and white house officials and are driven by a governor a government watchdog roof, crew. And they have been on top of all of these hatch act violations over the past three and a half years. So that is the group that is holding the administration to account on these violations. Jonathan we are talking about the white house being used for political purposes. The trump hotel, not far from the white house and not far from llon space where the speeches happened, talk about the role of the trump hotel this week . Michelle one of the unique things about not having a fully in person invention is that you dont have a space for donors to. Ingle however, throughout this week, the trump hotel served as a donor Gathering Place all week. We have seen this hotel being used as a venue where foreign leaders, lobbyists, government officials, all gather to hang out and show they are supporting the president. And this is yet another show of the president lending his public and business interests. We saw donor events held at the trump hotel all week. Many officials and donors who attended speech last night actually spent a lot of time at the trump hotel, hanging out each other, getting briefings from the campaign about what is coming up in the months ahead. It served as that donor experience that they may not have gotten if there were not a trump hotel right next to the white house, and a campaign to host them. Jonathan no doubt spending there asre, staying someone who is buying a room there were buying cocktails. Before we told me came on how many words you file in the president s speech. Glenn 7500. Jonathan ladies and gentlemen, that is a lot. Thank you both for coming on first look. Lets cross over to the opinion side of the washington post. Standing by our columnist colleagues henry olson and george will. Thank you both for joining. For me it is a late night it was a late night, so the gears are not catching for me. Thank you very much, for coming on. Henry, you have written about your hopes for the week. Get the Republican National convention meet your expectations . Henry in some ways, it exceeded my expectations. In the sense that it has been clear for years that they needed to display more compassion and address issues that people who are not product not part of the president ial based are concerned about. Most of the convention did that, in tones and with words and pictures and endorsers that one could see reaching out to people who are not part of the president has face. President s base. The president s speech last night did not follow suit and it was ultimately a convention let down by the person they were promoting. There was incredible opportunities for a 62nd or 32nd dad from the speeches a cachetnd door 30second 62nd there were incredible opportunities for a 60second or second ad from the convention. It lived down to my expectations. Fdrsst famous words of presidency was, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. The theme of the Republican Convention was, be afraid, be very afraid, that the suburbs across theaded country and that black lives matter and associated allies have figured out indeed to keep reelecting the president. If they keep up with the violence, and if joe biden cant summon the gumption and vocabulary to speak out against it. Two withdent aimed at which he needs to make marginal gains. One is the suburbs. 562016, 50 6 of votes percent of votes cast forecast and suburbs he needs clawback support there. Second, and this is a recurring public and recurring republican effort to improve turnout among republicans and africanamericans. In 2012, the last time barack obama was on the ballot, there was 66 turnout of eligible africanamerican voters. Longer on the no ticket, that dropped to 55 . 66 , mr. Stayed at trump would not have been elected. So marginal differences in small constituencies, the africanamerican in particular states, can make a difference. Makehan henry, what you of georges analysis. Into georges point, the message has been, be afraid, be very afraid. Will that work . Right. I think georges what you continue to see is both the fringe of the farleft nightting violence, last people apparently attacked senator rand according to his cant moreif biden than issue a ritual of the annunciation and not take on the leadership role he says he is capable of, he could very well do that. If you see one thing happening on your screens and you see it spiraling out of control, who are closest to that or claim to have moral authority on that side of the american elliptical spec not the able put an end to it, that could work. To hope people will remember everything that has been done over the past four years, but facts on the ground, literally on the ground, do make the president s argument more plausible that they get a month ago. In jonathan george, i want you to get back to something when you talked about violence particularly in kenosha, and Vice President biden finding gumption to speak out, which he has. He wrote a column where you write that joke id needs a Sister Souljah moment that joe biden needs a Sister Souljah moment. Souljah,n 1992, sister a young rap singer, responded approvingly to the los angeles riots of 1990 two following the acquittal of Police Officers in the acquittal of rodney king, and saying week after week of black scaling blocks, maybe blacks could chill that could kill whites for a while, and if there are any decent black people, she hasnt met any. Bill clinton criticized her explicitly by name. This sent a signal to wavering voters that he was an independent man and not enam those whoa hostage to inhabit the wilder shores of american politics it was considered very helpful to his campaign. Has not had a similar moment but daily, events give him the opportunity to have a Sister Souljah moment. Instead last week, what he did 93second tweet, 43 seconds of which deplored the arson and mayhem in the cities. If he things that is sufficient, he is very much mistaken. Henry mistaken. To have toe is going take a much more forthright in public stand. Jonathan one thing that troubles me about the conversation we are having about the violence in kenosha, in minneapolis, correct me if i wrong, but inam the mind of the general American Electric and particulate particularlyd Republican Voters, there is no difference between Peaceful Protesters in those cities and the folks doing the looting and the violence in those cities at night. Biden,e a way for joe andge, to thread the needle be able to talk about the Racial Injustice motivating the people protests, while also condemning violence of other people in those same cities. It is an easy distinction to make, an obvious distinction to make. If you are the head of the executive branch of the government, you have to speak out in favor of law enforcement. All, the constitution, in describing the duties of the president , is to take care that laws are faithfully execute. The laws being broken in this case are not federal laws, but still, the president is emblematic of the commit to the rule of law the commitment to the rule of law. Mr. Biden needs to do what lincoln did after the lynching of abolitionist senator elisha p lovejoy when he said there is no events that is fit to redress by mob law. Short, punchy, true. Mr. Biden is going to have to be heard with similar clarity. Jonathan yesterday in his interviews with Andrea Mitchell on msnbc and Anderson Cooper on cnn, he did just that. If i am listening to you correctly, he needs to keep doing it on a daily if not hourly basis. Do Republican Voters and particularly in the president s supporters, do they care about the nuance we are talking about when it comes to protests . Henry Republican Voters support peaceful protest. What Republican Voters are upset about is the constant overemphasis of the peaceful nature of the protests and downplaying of violence they see daily in most television media. That is a regular meeting you see in republican internet circles, khairat or screenshot that protests are wrapped in violence, and you see fire in the background of the person. Republican voters want somebody who will come out and say it is never ok to break the law, 100 . Full stop. And do it in a language that makes the people who are perpetrating these violence is perpetrating this violence recognizing that person making the statement has no sympathy for them and characterizes them is what they are, lawbreakers. That is what george is calling on them to do, to make a did not see a people who are throwing molotov cocktails, taking people out of cars and killing them and destroying peace and law order in neighborhoods across the country, and say you are ugs, ands, th areide the law while people peacefully protesting and say that if you stand outside the law, i cannot stand on your side. Vice President Biden yesterday did do that, not in the language, and he needs to do it more often, if i am listening to you correctly. Henry he needs to do Something Like go to kenosha and say, if you killed, you will be put in jail. If you name, you would be put in jail. If you burn and dilute, you will be put in jail. And, i will stand by the constitution and the rule of law and if you stand outside the rule of law, you stand outside the american assets. He is trying to thread a needle that is giving the Trump Campaign an opportunity. Jonathan george, you are known as a master wordsmith. Tim alberta at politico said the president s speech wasnt a terribly effective address. Thiso called it hodgepodge of oratory that was wrapped around a warning to america. What is your assessment of the president s nomination acceptance speech . George he touched all the erogenous zone on the body of the republican base, which is what conventions traditionally to energize people whose energy is supposed to turn out voters in the fall. There is clearly enthusiasm asymmetry. That is, those who favor donald m favor him more tensely more intensely, but those who favor joe biden favor mr. Biden. Joe biden has said often and will, dont compare me to the almighty, compare me to the alternative. Democrats are counting on Donald Trumps mere existence to solve their turnout problem. Is enoughre joe biden of, i guess you could say, a fright figure, to turn out the applicant base. That was the president s job and i think he did it adequate. Jonathan henry . Henry i was very let down by the president s speech. He did many of the things he needed to do to excite the republican base. Timespaceit in a that was about twice as much as he should have. This year length of the speech will weaken its impact among the republican base. And he also needed to reach beyond the republican base. 43 of america makes you a millionaire in the private sector but makes you a loser in politics. That is where President Trump has continued to balance himself, messaging to a minority base. There were some overtures in the beginning the who set when he said democrats and independents and whoever stands with this cause, but he needed to speak much more to them than to the base. And the speech was very uneven. It wouldve benefited from an editor who said every second word goes. [laughter] it would have benefited from a genuine wordsmith who could have with those words around he meant imagery that stuck in the imagination. Both those things were lacking. Consequently, the convention before trump was much more useful to the campaign. Jonathan george, you were laughing. Henry george laughing at the idea of editing donald trump. Like editing a stop sign. What do you do . This is who he is and what he said nt is a performance artist and that was a performance. Henry thinks, i think, most inky went on too long. But for an average trump voter, too much trump is a contradiction in terms. Inathan as someone who is the media and watches almost everything and also, admittedly someone who is on the other side of the president , i am watching last night and i am thinking, what is new here that i havent already heard from all the curbavirus refs briefings Coronavirus Press briefings havent heard from all the Coronavirus Press briefings and his remarks in charlotte monday. Is he capable of forging new ground and does he care . That is the 64,000 question for the campaign. He should have forged new ground. He should have been forging new grants for the past two years. And the convention before him was forging the ground, talking more about the messages and using themes and endorsements and testimonials from people that the president should have been doing. Then you get to the president and it is the same old, same old, pretty much. People have been asking me, is there a path back for the president . And i say yes, but it is not clear the president can take that path. If you cant, that gives him a better chance, but last night showed maybe this guy is an old dog who cant learn a single new trick. Jonathan george . Rare init is very president ial campaigns that something new comes up in the last 60 days of the campaign. The last and i can think of is eisenhower in 1952 saying during a treat speech, i will go to korea, which had a galvanizing effect on his candidacy, which was going to succeed anyway. It seems to me to be unreasonable that mr. Trump is an open book and his been reading himself to the community to the country for 30 years. Is one thing there that happened last night we have never seen before. George, if we had, you would have written about it. The president of the United States using the white house as a backdrop, using the south lawn for a political event. We have got about three minutes. I would love for both of you to talk about the use of the white house for political purposes. Is it a big deal or not a big deal . Henry trump shouldnt have done it. 1975erald ford in announced his reelection effort in the oval office. Steve karnak yet msnbc has shown the video and no one complained the time of the use of the oval office to announce a reelection effort with all his political it risers around. Political advisors around him. We are hyping the problem of the south lawn. It shouldnt be done, but it has been done before. Garden the phrase Rose Campaign entered the lexicon long before donald trump our political life. Everything a president says is political. Therefore, as long as he is running for reelection, there will be a blurred line between what is and is not except. And is not acceptable. Donald trump unambiguously slept over the blurry line, but in the hierarchy of outrages it is the outrages, it is pretty low. Jonathan on msnbc last night, reidead the anchor joy the anchor said what we had just seen was the start of monarchy. Concerned that is what we saw the beginning of, especially if President Trump wins reelection . The imperial presidency, again, worries about that donald trump. I think it was george mason, one thehe founders, who said presidency is inherently a to be dissed monarchy. It has become worse and worse. Unhinged power is a principal constitutional problem. Again, what mr. Trump did on the scale of things is as nothing, compared to joe biden saying he would shut the country down of scientists recommended it. No, he wouldnt, because he doesnt have General Police powers, governors have this. Time,an we are over henry olson, george wilson, thank you for coming on first look.
