Fireworks display tonight at the conclusion of the ceremony. Highlights minutes, from the convention, including sharp attacks against the democrats by the president outlining his plans as he if he is reelected to a second term. We will also be talking to todd cusick. We went to check in with two members of congress. I went to go tonight with representative Debbie Dingell in dearborn, michigan. Democrats, you watch the tonight. Overall and what is your observation . To be negative, but this week has been something for me. The distortion of facts, and quite frankly i am very concerned about how we continue to try to divide this country with fear and hatred. We should be the Fact Checkers on a number of points in speeches tonight as we have seen all weeks, many of the claims made are not true. Host representative hill, you watch the speech from your home. Add to this play out . Thanks for having me. I thought President Trump delivered this week to the rnc two key issues. He talked about promises he made back in 2016 eddie is delivered on those promises in many ways. That is the example of a business person rather than a politician. Someone who makes a to do list and get done. Secondly he contrasted with what he would do in the next four years with regard to tax, revelatory policy, foreign policy, Energy Policy with the positions of joe biden and senator harris have taken at outlined last week at their convention. Host there is been a lot of talk about covid19, the president addressing it tonight. Where are we in terms of a vaccine, because the president seemed to indicate we are closer than many of the experts believe we are . Noted inhink we congress is the fda and cdc Administration Working collaboratively with congress and the medical community internationally for rapidly approving therapeutics that can make it easier and faster to treat americans and others that add that have covid19 as well as set up operation warp speed that is taking up her abusive having a competition to get the vaccine approved as quickly as possible through phase three trial. It started out with over 100 possibilities, and we are down to six or seven that will make that cut and go to human trials. I think that is a remarkable achievement in such a short. Of time. Short period of time. Host trump went after a key demographic, bluecollar democrats, saying joe biden is betrayed those bluecollar democrats. How do you respond to that . I am so tired. It has been a long week. With frenchto be on and we are two people respect each other and work with each other. I want to do say one thing on go into the next thing. I wish people would wear masks. To see that many people in one area not Wearing Masks makes me so scared. I see i am worried about covid. I wanted to say that. I think this is going to be a competitive fall. That many of the workers, working men and women in my district this is what i would say. One third of those workers will vote for trump again. Those who voted for Hillary Clinton will vote for joe biden, and that a lot of people that know in 2008, joe biden was part of saving this industry. There were people, republicans who said let them go bankrupt. They want to see manufacturing brought back to this country. We passed a tax bill that incentivize people to continue to locate overseas. The president says he wants to bring the back. I will work with anybody who wants to bring those jobs back from overseas at the supply chains, but people have not seen delivery on some of the things that happened. I have two steel plants in my district, one which is going to close and what and one which closed part of it. We saw General Motors caused plants. I think there is a lot of cap skepticism of about promises being made and they went to see people return manufacturing to this country. They want to stop cheering promises and see the delivery. Bidenk they know that joe helped save this industry in 2008. Host we have seen a lot at the white house over the last few nights. I went to get a reaction from credits critics who said the president crossed the line by having this partisan political event on the south lawn of the white house. Representative hill, there is the hatch act. How do you respond to that criticism . Thehe pandemic caused both Democratic Party at the Republican Party to scramble for producing a Great Convention that could connect with voters across the country. The president i am sure it reviewed very carefully how to use the outdoor setting at the cabinetuse legally, and officials at the top level of the white house are not covered by the hatch act. They are typically exempt from the hatch act in some ways, and i observed the Republican National committee paid for those locations and all expenses associated with it. I understand the criticism, but i think the pandemic we need to take that into account when it comes to secret Service Protection and being outdoors and balance that out from both parties as they struggled to put on their convention this year. Host representative dingell, your response . I think we crossed a line. I can hear some of the concerns in frenchs voice. We did a convention that was not present line. Official, and we have political. And we know when not to cross the line. We have administration committees, ethics officers that make sure we are abiding by the law. The white house is the official residence of the president of the United States and has not been used instantly my memory in the last century for a political event like this, and i also think it crossed the line when we have a secretary of state. We had a republican senator from michigan who said politics stops at waters edge. We had secretary of state republican and democrat have not participated in political conventions of either party. I think we have crossed lines. The white house has used a political drop all week. I found it offensive and wrong. Host congressman hill, about 1500 people on the south lawn at the white house. They were close together. Very few had amassed. Do you worry about coronavirus and potentially if somebody in the audience get sick as a result of being on the south lawn . I do share the view of Debbie Dingell that crowds who cannot socially distance should have masks on, even at an outdoor event if it cannot be socially distance. I certainly would have liked to see more masks at the event this believe that is something all of us need to remind our fellow citizens, that being socially distant, wearing the mask, following hygiene standards is how we will prevent the spread of covid19 and get back to what we all want to, which is a fully normal business and personal life. Host we heard from your home state senator tom cotton. Your reaction to his speech tonight and do you expect them to run in 2024 . I will let you asking the question about 2024. I share his thoughts tonight. He made the statement after the rebuilding of the Defense Department and the strategy but President Trump getting out of the iranian deal, resetting our relations in the middle east, getting rid of isis, rebuilding relations with israel that had been not good under the obama administration, president obama and Vice President bidens appeasement of a lot of bad actors around the world, senator cotton added we are safer today as a result of the actions of the last four years of the trump administration. I share that view. Host representative dingell, the president very critical of joe biden, constant reference tonight and over the last few nights to is 47 years and public service. Is that going to be one of the narratives we will hear from the republicans aimed at your partys nominee . I think that probably is. Things wee of the will hear all fall. I am not sure that is one of the issues that will get attention. There are other issues we do need to take very seriously. I am getting tired of democrats being portrayed as supporting a number of things like writing and looting, which we are not. And looting, that which we are not. We need to address real issues we have in this country. Flag. Love that american we are americans first, not democrats or republicans, and i am tired of people saying we as democrats do not love our flag, do not love our country. We loved our constitution, value and respect the fundamental pillars of our constitution, freedom of speech, freedom of igion, freedom of repairs of the press, and due process. I am one of the people who would take it headon and not let people get away with pinning those pictures. Host law and order is one of the things we are in for the president tonight and we are kenosha, ings unfold in wisconsin. It does that play into the republican narrative . You know what i want to say to you . Have two say to you we support Law Enforcement is very important in all of our communities, but do you understand if you are a black man in america, you are treated differently than a white man . We saw a 17yearold white young men walking down the street with a gun that was not stopped that headshot and murdered two people. That is on video. If that had been a young black man with a gun, i am not sure he would be alive today. Thosee got to address issues. We watched george floyd be murdered. We need a leader that will not put kerosene on the fire but will help it does fires, and have difficult but Uncomfortable Conversations and bring communities together. In my community, my Police Chiefs have been with the kids, talking about these issues. They are not afraid to the tough conversations and i want a leader who will not encourage these claims but will try to put them out. Host congressman hill, your response. Debbie dingell and i are very good friends, and she knows her police chief in detroit has been outspoken against this movement of defunding the police and not standing up to men and women in uniform. People put on,000 a uniform, kiss and their families goodbye and go try to protect our communities. They deserve our thanks, respect, and they deserve the speaker of thousand to respect them as well and not be silenced by all the anarchy around our country, and Speaker Pelosi as been more than silent then she should be. With that said, there are a number of solid bipartisan things we can do that are supportive of Donald Trumps executive order on police reform, president obamas 21st Century Policing report, the Heritage Foundation pasta bs recommendations and the outstanding work tim scott, our great senator from south carolina. All of these things have at their heart high quality policing best practices. If we want to go to policing, fair policing, equal justice under the law, if we want to get bad cops out of the force and have the kind of community we can be proud of, then that should be dealt with by mayors and city councils, and if you are in a city with bad policing, the place to take that up and do that reform is right at home close to the people in that locality. Host the final question for both of you is that at the fall ,ampaign gets underway representative dingell, what will happen over the next 65 days . How do you think this campaign will unfold . , i wanted to be a civil campaign. French and i are great friends and we do work together. Joe biden does not support defunding the police, eddie is made that very clear. I agree that we need to be doing this at the local level, but we need leaders that will encourage and support. I think we will see a really brutal fall, and i think we will see a lot of things said that arent in factual. I will be out there trying to bleed lead and i will be correcting facts when they are not correct. Everybody needs to understand how important this election is and the right to vote is the most important responsibility we have as citizens of this country. We all need to engage, and we will be working hard to get every american to participate in this years election. Host congressman hill, will it be a Brutal Campaign . 4244 years, i have not seen for four years, i have not seen a campaign that was not brittle. When i read my history, they are always tough. I do not expect this want to be any different, but i expect President Trump to be reelected because i believe he is the best economy, ebuild our renew and restore our way of life, and to bring health back to this country and to make sure we are all aware of the great opportunities that are in this beautiful country in america. Dissidents on cspan support participants to join our president. Rock, to our representatives, thank you for being with us. Thank you. Get some sleep. Host we have much more to go. We will be talking to bob cusick , the editor in chief. The moment at which the president said it is official, he accepts the nomination. My fellowp americans, i broadly accept the nomination to president of the United States. [applause] host that moment from the south lawn of the white house. Not in jacksonville, florida. For analysis, we turn to you zach. Usack. Zachc the visuals were quite stunning, and critics say it was illegal because it was held at the white house. We have never seen a Convention Like this one or even a democratic one. I think President Trump had to make this a choice instead of a referendum. We have been talking to republicans about that. Trump has been dominating the headlines in the spring, but the spring was not a good time for him and his numbers took a hit. I think this week the republicans did go after biden. They have made it more of a choice. We have a couple more months to go. I think it will be fascinating where we go from here. As far as the speech, i thought a got off to a strong start. Energylong, and loss of toward the end, but you are the fireworks and the show. Trump is the ultimate showman and certainly they put on quite a display at the white house. ,hen you look at this election the dominating elections of Ronald Reagan in 1984, they are just not going to happen. This country is very divided. There are States Joe Biden can count on and there are states President Trump can count on. It will all be decided in the middle ground. This will not be a blowout. This 70 you mentioned minute speech, if there was a previous question, who are the longest convention speech, that was President Trump in 2016. In his speech, he laid bare his criticism of joe biden, references to is 47 years in the senate eddie had this to say. Pres. Trump at no time before have voters face a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas. This election will decide whether we save the American Dream or whether we allow a socialist agenda to demolish our cherished destiny. Tonights final night of the public a National Convention held at the south lawn of the white house. There are two economies, the nasdaq and it dealt reaching new records, and yet we still have record unemployment. How will that play out in this election . I think it depends on what happens with covid19 over the next couple of months. The numbers Health Numbers are not great, but there have been signs of optimism recently. I think it depends on where we six weeks, if the country is getting on top of this issue, that will help the president. You mentioned we have record unemployment going on right now, as fast as it went out to the lows from earlier this year and you have the stock market doing very well. I think the stock market doing well as hurt the chances that congress is going to pass another vice virus package because republicans do not want to spend another 2 trillion or 3 trillion when the market is doing well. It is an the usual time would you at this pandemic and the United States in crisis, and the markets are doing quite well. Host one side note, because we cover the event. Congressman, chris indicating he thinks republicans could regain control of the house this year. That is quite a bold prediction, and you always want to have the donations coming in, because most of the political world is looking at the white house and senate. You can argue both are tossups. The house is not really a tossup. Democrats are favored to control the house next year. The question is who is going to pick up seats. If you look at history, you will an see massive waves in election, especially now with the country divided. It was the either democrats or republicans pick up singledigit seats in the house. The houses of flipping are remote. Host the Trump Campaign officials can think they think the president can get 12 50 of the African American vote. George w. Bush received 8 or 9 . Pres. Trump and to bring prosperity to our forgotten inner cities, we worked hard to pass historic criminal justice reform, prison reform, opportunity zones, and longterm funding of historically black colleges and universities. Before the china virus came in, produced the best unemployment numbers for africanamericans, hispanic americans and Asian Americans ever recorded. [applause] and i say very modestly that i have done more for the Africanamerican Community than any president since abraham lincoln, our first republican president. [applause] line, when you heard that what was your reaction . Is interesting. The Republican Convention was all about the base, and the campaign as tried to reach out and featuring a lot of women, africanamericans, because their numbers certainly with suburban women are not good right now. Entsr numbers with independ compared to 2016 are not that great. Anytime the Trump Campaign knows they are not going to win the africanamerican vote, the latino vote, but the bigger this year you can get, that is significant. Willnk this is a theme you see. Some republicans have been frustrated the president as always courted his base, which is very strong and not tried to do more to reach out to independents. Maybe we will see that over the next couple of months. Host the story of alice johnson, she is from tennessee the mother of five, convicted for involvement with a drug cartel. Through Kim Kardashian and at the accident the of the president , her sentence was commuted. She is working with prisons across the country. She told her story tonight. Here is part of what she told the audience. De nearly 22 years i spent in prison were not wasted. God had a purpose and a plan for my life. I was not delayed or denied. I was destined for such a time as this. I pray that you will not just hear this message, but that you and be inspired by my story your compassion will lead you to take action for those who are forgotten. Host not sure if you hurt her speech earlier, but she does have a compelling story. . A very compelling a very compelling story. Is the playbook of what a will do. People have short memories. You have got to spell out what you did, what you accomplished, you willarted and what do any potential second term. The president was not doing earlier this year. I think he did it tonight, which he laid out antiregulations, that he will bring the economy back after this covid nightmare, and a few other things he is trying to say. Listen, i can build this economy back. If you look at the polls, certainly nobody is blaming President Trump for covid19 coming here, but his handling of covid19, it is numbers are not good. He has got to turn those numbers around in order to win a second term. Host we were live back in 2015 when donald trump came down the escalator and announced his candidacy. Tonight is the president and first lady were descending from the white house down the stairs and to the podium, very reminiscent of what we saw five years ago. Verys, the visuals are important for President Trump. When truck came down that escalator, very few people thought he would win the republican nomination. Wonhocked everybody and he wire to wire and had a convention that was controversial and ted cruz gave a controversial speech. A lot of people and the abundance of thought comic you may have won the nomination, but he cannot beat Hillary Clinton, and that he did. You can never count out donald trump in any type of race ordeal. Or deal he has defied critics before. He is facing an uphill battle. Call him the underdog right now, but he has been the underdog before. Host congress is looking into the seeds used by the secretary of state. Do democrats on capitol hill have any leverage or will this issue fade away . Investigatehey will it. A lot of people saying they are many hatch act violations. I do not think that will resonate much beyond the beltway. I think there will be investigations. Will it lead to anything significant, no. Do i think voters are going to possibled upon adjective violations . I do not think it matters. Got. Rob wanted is what he the visuals of the white house as a backdrop and big fireworks afterward. Host making this a choice election as the president went after democrats saying democrats will take away your rights. Pres. Trump at the left gains power, they will demolish the suburbs, confiscate your guns, and appoint justices who will wipe away your Second Amendment and other constitutional freedoms. Biden is a trojan horse for socialism. Joe biden does not have the strength to stand up to wild eyed marxists like Bernie Sanders and his fellow reticles. Many how is he ever going to stand up for you . D is not. Host we have been hearing from a number of republicans all week that the democratic nominee joe biden will be a trojan horse for the leftist agenda. That is something you will hear, because the cap made a struggle label joe biden. They like that. Joe biden will be under enormous pressure from the left to do some of the things they want. Many cities and one of them saying i will help joe biden get elected. Then he will be the most progressive president ever. An effectiveat is strategy. How effective we will see. You will keep hearing that number, 47 years joe biden has been in public service. He has the insider and he will have to pay off the left. Both sides are using fear. Democrats saying you have got to fear a second term of drug, and ,ruck and his term of trump and trump and his allies. You have got to fear what biden will do. They have got to continue that message for it to resonate in the polls. Host this is what senator Mitch Mcconnell in a pretaped speech from his hometown in kentucky. Your jobant to toss out of existence and then send you a government check for unemployment. They can show you what kind of a car you can drive, what sources of information are credible, and even how many hamburgers you can eat. They want to defund the police and take away your Second Amendment rights. Care for free health Illegal Immigrants and offer no protection at all for unborn children. Goodconnell has had a very relationship with the president throughout the years. Joe biden came out and struck the deal on fiscal matters. He is not going after joe biden personally. He is going after policies here, and Mitch Mcconnell is seizing on the power of progresses. We have seen this in primaries where democratic incumbents have lost two progressives. The left is very powerful. Bernie sanders nearly won the nomination in 2016. He finished second as well in 2020, and he will be pushing the envelope. That will be the strategy, and i think joe biden will have to do more media interviews to clearly state what he is going to do in a first term should he win. We really have not gotten those answers yet. We saw andweek, heard from the president on multiple occasions during the democratic convention, and this week we are to from senator kamala harris. Essentially, it joe biden as been doing virtual events, fundraisers. He did two interviews today and so far no scheduled campaign appearances. It is interesting that after the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton told howard stern of sirius radio that she regretted her media strategy, that she was too careful. And she was. Trump was doing interview after interview, and she was not. She was doing one from here and there, and President Trump was getting free media from various organizations. Joe biden right now is following that type of strategy, where he is not doing a lot of interviews. They would be wise to do interviews with the hill and cspan. Host we approve that message. We would love to sit down with both candidates. I went to get a final point from you. Obviously, coronavirus will loom large in this campaign over the next 60 plus days. That headlight is cdc guidance parking backlash. What is the story and how will it play out on the campaign trail . Testing and cdc walked back policy change from earlier this week that said, ok, we do not need to test asymptomatic people. Was obviously not a major player and has been dealing with diseases and pandemics, key was not involved in that decision. There was a bit of an upper audit. Have been testing a lot of people, you see with therapeutics and other treatments that the numbers are Getting Better in a number of states, not all. The cdc had to walk this back. It raises the question of political influence from the white house on scientists. When that happens and when there are questions about that, there will always be controversy. Host two weeks of conventions, the democrats last week, republicans this week. How did the democrats do . How did the republicans do . I think they both did well. I think they both had decent conventions. Republicans are feeling a lot better than they did in the spring when covid had completely shut everything down and it was eight dark time and the stock market was tainting. Taking. I think democrats had a good convention. Joe biden gave a very good speech. President trump gave the speech you want to do tonight. This is just the beginning. It is going to be a brawl. There are some states that donald trump is looking shaky right now. He has got to win florida. That does not win florida, is it, and the campaign knows that. We talk to people who acknowledge florida is a must win. That is a state that is struggled with covid19 for a while and now it is Getting Better. I do think we will see nastiness on the campaign trail over the next couple of months, and of course, we are all looking for the debates, the three president ial, and the one vp. Point, joe biden is ahead nationally. They say it will see a bounce for the president this week. I do not think it was he a huge bounce. There are very few people who are undecided. 10 50 15 of people who could be had either way. I do think republicans will get a bounce from this for a number of reasons, the stock market and covid19, good developments there, but i do not think it will be huge. I think these debates will be more important in conventions. This willwonder if change conventions moving forward. I think as far as the rollcall, the democrats did a very good job of that of doing visuals of not just on the convention floor. I think this will change how things are done. Some things work. Both sides had technical issues at times, but conventions Going Forward could be a lot different than they were precovid. Host a very long night, bob hill. Com.
