And the speechesly senator tim scott, republican of South Carolina. Former South Carolina governor nikki haley. The significance of their speeches and their mess messages tonight. I think it is notable they were chosen to lead in the second hour, that is the hour that republicans have said would more prominent speakers beholden to the primetime hour to have network news coverage. Just to start with senator tim scott who wrapped up the first night of the convention. He gave a very powerful speech on race and given he is the only black republican senator, he is very poised to speak at this and he was the lead behind the Police Reform bill that the Senate Republicans had put forth following the george floyd protests. A very powerful speech from him. He also shows that the Trump Campaign and the administration and republicans in general really see him as a future leader of the party. That was a big scene tonight and well see that carry on through the rest of the week. At the convention they are going to be highlighting the rising stars in the party, tim scott is definitely one of those and then the u. N. Ambassador nikki haley gave a very powerful speech and spoke of Race Relations using a story of how she is a brown girl in a world of black and white is how she grew grue up. That struck an emotional cord with viewers. We saw a lot of other speakers, donald trump jr. And kimberly guilfoyle, donald trump jr. s girlfriend who works for trump. They led more pointed attacks on biden and the biden campaign. I would say haley and scott really tried to paint a more optimistic future and a more measured approach to some of the speakers we saw tonight. In past conventions normally the nominee could come out wednesday or thursday. Wwe saw the president a number of times today in charlotte, North Carolina, greeting about 300 delegates there and then in two different video presentations today one from the white house with First Responders and later with hostages that he was responsible for releasing. Im wondering about the optics of that and what the message is from the president and the Republican Party. I think having talked with Trump Campaign officials, people at the white house, they want it all to be about trump. Of course the convention is all about President Trump and the nominee. Particularly especially particularly on especially in contrast to last week they want to hear from the president himself. And, of course they will have a massive speech on thursday on the white house south lawn. I think the optics are really ist the president himself very involved and what is happening at the convention. Some republicans did criticize Vice President joe biden last being as face forward in the convention as much as he could have been. Of course, that is not, you cedent. Peaking that pre the president himself loving the madefortv moments and rally type speeches like you gave today in North Carolina and then the more internet settings in those tape white house appearances tonight the more internet settings. Some senators, republican senators, senator romney, leading democrats radical of the president using the white house tonight and on thursday evening. Yes, it is definitely i would say unprecedented. Definitely controversial. The president is not part of the which prohibits Public Officials from making political performing for a political capacity. The president is not part of that but it is still questionably, the ethics of that are questionable. It is going to be, especially his speech on thursday when he is accepting the nomination. Definitely questionable optics there. Was there a moment this evening that stood out from your standpoint . There were quite a few moments. One thing that i noticed was they really try to paint the whichent as an empathizer is not something we see a lot from republicans in the Trump Campaign. Discussion with his with the former hostages at the white house. It was also a signal something i brought up before about him leveraging the white house and the optics of the presidency throughout this week. We also heard from the different speakers painting a more empathetic person, similar to what we saw last week with a painting of bidens character. I also just think that Race Relations were a huge part of the discussion tonight from each of these speakers. A number of from prominent black americans supporting President Trump, including senator tim scott. Including kimberly running in baltimore theme of tonight is something we did not expect to consider throughout the rest of this week. Congressman jim jordan talking about the loss of his nephew and on the phone with the president and the president talking to the father grieving the loss of his son so tragically. That place into the empathizer role of the president. Jim jordan is someone we eypically seen making mor fiery attacks are coming out in a much more passionate way. More subdued and shared a personal story about his relationship with President Trump, and the more gentle side we do not often see from these republican leaders. Tomorrow we sure from a lonnie a trump and the newly renovated rose garden. We will hear from the secretary of state, mike pompeo, which is unprecedented, having a secretary of state speaking at a Political Party convention and from senator rand paul, republican kentucky. Tomorrow, what you looking for . Are you looking for . On therrow just a note first lady speech. The president will be there as well in the rose garden. I agree with you on secretary pompeo. A bit controversial, that he is speaking in this capacity giving the Senate Confirmed official. Looking ahead to tomorrow, we will see similar to tonight speaking to the president s character and trying to paint him what he can do for america and a second term. That will be a much more prominent theme tomorrow night, teasing out what a second term President Trump will look like. And for secretary pompeo, he will be speaking to Foreign Relations issues, giving the address from jerusalem where he is currently. He is in israel right now. On that. Us anything senator rand paul. He is big on trade. And america first. You can expect those themes from him. We will follow your work and check in with you again tomorrow. Following all of this covering the white house and politics. Thank you for being with us tonight. Coverager our live throughout gets underway at a 30 eastern time, 5 30 on the west coast at 8 30 eastern time. Live gavel to gavel coverage. First, lets begin with former congresswoman time davis, republican from northern virginia. What was the overall tone you took away from tonights proceedings . Have seen these two conventions, tale of two countries. For democrats it is all gloom and doom. For the republicans it is all rosy opportunity, great years ahead. Probably not uncommon, we all tend to look at life two different lessons lenses. In the whites house a more rosy picture and republicans us our picture. I thought they accomplished what they wanted to accomplish they humanize the president. The speaker from cuba talked sbout america and the promise made. Africanamericans talking about this as a great land of opportunity instead of victims. They had the guy from park l and. You tend to get the partisans watching their own conventions. Democrats solidified their base at their convention. They did not get much of about. It will be interesting to see what the viewership here was. But i thought it was very effective. I thought they did a very good job in terms of hitting the major points, humanizing the president and touching on what was going right with america and the promise of what lies ahead. Jim moran, you were watching the proceedings. Was it a tale of two parties as tom davis is referring to . No question. It is a tale of two tribes. I dont know never the twain shall meet. Do,om knows better than i ist conservative democrat more liberal than the most liberal republican these days. And the chasm just keeps getting wider. And i think these two conventions reflect that fact. That we kind of have two partisan tribes if you will. Tribe is optimistic, feels that their candidate should reflect decency, compassion, confidence. The other tribe feels that we are under assault, Cultural Values are under assault if we do not elect their leader. Then our suburban backyards are by looters seized and rioters and socialists. And the squad. I saw a lot of fear tonight that was being generated. I think somewhat superficially, but nevertheless, the people obviously believe they have something at stake. That they need to, that they need to fear. On theot see much fear democratic convention. I thought the emphasis was upon getting along, trying to find, trying to bridge divides, and it underscore the decency of the candidate. So, a different approach. Two very different people, and unfortunately two very different Political Party. I want to go back to the politics in a moment but first, some of the moments from tonight, including this by the chair of the democrat and Republican Party Ronna Mcdaniel from michigan. Here is what she told delegates. If you watched the dnc you probably noticed that democrats spent a lot of time talking about how much they despise our president. But we heard very little about their actual policies. Policies that would have an unthinkable decade ago. Policies like tanning fossil fuels, eliminating private health insurance, Taxpayer Funded Health Care for people who come here illegally and d funding the police. Moran, youran jim response to the current chair of the Republican National committee. I am glad that the chair brought up the issue of policy. Because there was none of it tonight. I do not expect there is going to be a lot of it over the ensuing three days. In fact, the Republican Party announced that there will be no platform for the first time ever, i think. I cannot imagine a time when a party has not presented a platform. On the other hand, the democrats had dozens and dozens of pages of policy that probably very few people are going to read. There is no that platform just underscores the fact that this is almost cul tish. It is not the Republican Party that i was in the congress with that i depended on to mediate the extremism of the democratic party. This is a party built around one person. And they dont know what his policy is going to be for one day to the next. So, all they do is say we are going to support President Trump and by implication, whatever he wants to do is what we want to do. It is quite a departure from tradition, and i personally do not find it very comforting. Tom davis, one of the president s star just offenders, matt gaetz. This is what he told the gathering tonight. Settle for Biden Babbitt that is the presented promoted by aoc. They will make him an extra in a movie written and produced and directed by others. Orror. A h movie. They will invite,s 13 to live next door. The police are coming when you call in democrat run cities they are being disbanded. Blaming our best and allowing societys worst . That is the story they write in hollywood. Congressman davis, lock yourself in your home, empty the prisons, your reaction to that rhetoric. There has been some of that. In california some of the firefighters that used to the prisoners are not available now. Part of that is covid19 relating. Some of it is the fact that on crime there is a feeling among democrats and some republicans that maybe some of these penalties have been too harsh and we are spending too much on prisons that there has been some racial complications to who is jailed and the like. But i think we need to understand the democratic coalition, they have a platform that is carefully negotiated to keep the sanders people happy but not go overboard. These are difficult things. Republicans did not really need that. They have a fouryear record to run on. But when you look at the democrats, have to ask yourself, is joe biden going to be the joe Biden John Kasich described, who works across the aisle and will be or he is the joe biden the Bernie Sanders said he is going to be, move the Progressive Agenda . I think that will be the theme throughout the campaign and after he is elected in terms of which way he is pulled at this point. The American People will have to make in a judge a judgment over which joe biden will the sea. Coalition is by and large very dissonant in terms of some of its groups, not united behind a platform. But united behind the fact the do not like donald trump. Some for personal reasons and some for policy reasons. You heard a lot of personal attacks on trump at the democratic conventions. So, well see how this works out, but what it tells me is should the democrats win, the governing coalition will have some fractures and it from day one as they have to make choices between some of those constituency groups. But Neither Party has been that effective in governing overtime. They have all had difficulties. Both parties seem to do better when they are the out party. Let me ask you about the politics. Earlier today we heard from senator jeff flake of arizona. He talked about his goldwater conservative principles and why as a lifelong republican he is supporting joe biden. A long list of former house members, many of whom you served with, supporting joe biden. Will it make a difference within the Republican Party . Will that help the democrats or does it not make a difference . This is now Donald Trumps party. Well, it is Donald Trumps party. And the parties have been realigning for some time. As i looked at that list of members, many of whom i respect and love and served with, they were a different Republican Party at that time. Coalitions change, republicans attract new voters and they lose voters in other areas. Many of these members who signed out our traditionalists, institutional lists. And what they have seen as both parties institutionally moving away from the norms, but with donald trump putting an exclamation point on that. That is part of their beef as well. But the Republican Party has been remade. When you look at the counties that were lost by Ronald Reagan in 1984 when he got 60 of the vote, half of those counties he lost were carried by donald trump. He has brought a lot of new people into the party and, as a result, some people feel what effect it makes at the end of the day remains to be seen. I think they were trying to send a message to disaffected republicans, it is ok to vote for biden. But republicans are picking up a lot of new voters as well. Particularly among workingclass white voters that used to be the backbone of the democratic parties. Coalitions are not static. Another moment. The st. Louis couple became famous. Both attorneys protecting their homes as demonstrators moved through the neighborhood. Tonight they addressed the Republican National convention. Not a Single Person in the out of control mob you saw at our house was charged with a crime. But you know who was . We were. They have actually charged us with felonies for daring to defend our home. On top of that, consider this the marxists liberal activist leading the mob to our neighborhood stood outside our home with a bullhorn screaming you cannot stop the revolution. Weeks later, that same marxists activist won the democrat nomination to hold a seat in the house of representatives. Your home, that is your castle, protecting your home is first and foremost. That is what they say they were trying to do. Yeah, well, the protesters were not armed. Other than with a megaphone. I think it was a somewhat extreme reaction that they did not really try to get on their or invade the property, let alone hurt the property owners. I think that is a little overstated to bring out a machine gun and a pistol. But, you know, to each his own. I want to underscore something alluded to. I see it as a difference between the two parties. This is a country of great diversity. It seems to me that the Political Party that ought to be leaving it is one that has a wide tent. The democrats now, at least they go from the far left to the middle. They have moderate republicans now within the tent. The Republican Convention i think is going to underscore the fact that President Trump wants to double down on his base, to really restrict his supporters agree witho wholly him. There really is not a lot of tolerance for disagreement with one person. Think that the Republican Party that is going to be left after the trump era is going to have much diversity. I do not think it is going to represent a broad base of americans, and that is what oftentimes happens with cul tish organizations. I worry about the Republican Party. To be a strong party you need to tolerate differences of opinion. I do not see much of that coming out of the convention or i do not think much of it has, out of the white house over the last 3. 5 years. Are you worried about your party, tom davis . I am not worried about it. As we take a look at coalitions, i am worried about our performance in some suburban areas and i think we need to spread our wings out there and be more inclusive in these areas. I actually think the convention tonight, that the speaker from a cuban refugee that you had several immigrants speaking, several africanamericans of some prominence comfortable in the Republican Party. They need more voices like that and more diverse forces. They made a start tonight. We see how it goes the next three days. It is not the republican message that is as bad is they need a wider variety of messengers. I think they hit that tonight. We will see that theme over the next four days. Know you said, tom davis, your First Convention was 1972. Im sure you remember watching the 1968 campaign. Are there echoes of Richard Nixons campaign with donald trump in 2020 . You had some of that comparison because you had the cities of flame in 1968. You had nixon competing and beating humphrey over the head with that. But you also had George Wallace in that campaign. Wallace is now out of the equation. Nixon had to walk a fine line. He wanted to take votes away from wallace but nixon was an integrationist. He wanted to take votes away which is why keep its bureau agnew for his Vice President why keep it spiro agnew for his Vice President. And the presidency. What happened as he started to and republicans were able to take advantage of that. Washe time i think it democratic overreach. I think you are seeing a little bit of that this time where they are taking some for granted in the cities and not feeling we have some of the cities burning ,nd some of the graffiti buildings being assaulted, police being assaulted, that there is not some reaction like the couple from st. Louis, that just wonder is this the kind of country they want . They feel they have rights, too. It was overreach on the part of the prosecutor in st. Louis to bring a criminal charge against the people that were out there, even though that might have been exaggerated what they needed to do to protect their property. I did not think it was a crime. We saw that in baltimore with freddie gray when the prosecutor was quick on the trigger and could not get a conviction. So i think those are concerns as well. Sentiment came up with kimberly guilfoyle, the girlfriend of donald trump, jr. Who also spoke tonight. Youroran, i want to get reaction to what she told the Convention Earlier tonight. Do not let the democrats take you for granted. Do not let them step on you. Your let them destroy families, your lies and your future. Dont let them kill future generations because they told you and brainwashed you and fed you lies that you were not go to. Like my parents, you can achieve your american dreams. You can be that shining example to the world. Manifest and be the change in this country that you dream. That you hope, that you believe in. Quote that the democrats will kill future generations. First, the tone and also her remarks. It kind of leaves me speechless. Putting me in a difficult position. Understandcessarily her point of view. I cannot relate to her very well. I guess i have difficulty relating to anyone who is Donald Trumps girlfriend, because the two of them seem to take a very similar tack, and it is a country that does not exist. Exaggerated view of what the American People are facing. And the perspective that in my to have. Ought i thought what she said was overstated. It obviously had a preface behind it, which is consistent with what i think we are going to see more of in the convention scaring people, believing if you do not elect our guy, then youre very future, your lives are at stake. Eah, there were a lot of lives at stake over the last for years. A lot of them were lost. Risk in some of this exaggeration. I think it is overreach. I think it lacks an amount of credibility i do not think it is particularly helpful. Maybe it is a clash of personalities, and obviously, a worldview perspectives, but it seems to me reaching out, trying to bring more people into the message that more an thiscan relate to th over the top extremism we heard from kamala guilfoyle, from her boyfriend and from several other speakers tonight that we will get much more of over the next three days. Tom davis, did you watch the speech . Any reaction . I did. Meat speech. Did she and me, how gavin newsom stay married for five or six years . What a turnabout. From being first lady of San Francisco under mayor gavin newsom to now dating donald trump and giving this kind of speech. It has been some transformation over time. You cannot help but wonder, what was this journey that led her from the left to the right . Tom, i think of it every time i see gavin newsom. But that is their personal issue. I suppose it should not be ours. Exactly. I will you both respond to this, we will hear from the secretary of state mark on pao, breaking precedent secretary of state mike pompeo, breaking precedent. Jim moran, your reaction, then tom davis. There are so many precedents being broken by this presidency. I find it offensive. The white house is the house for all americans. I do not believe it should be used as a political prop. It is being used as a political prop. The state department these are buildings that are really revered because of the institutions that they house and the history that they reflect. And they are being used as stage, thee than a seeing of power. But the people you are using them do not own them. The American People own them. So, i find it troubling. And i hope it is not a precedent that last for subsequent presidencies, because it is inappropriate. Former commerce and davis . Former congressman davis . It is not illegal. It is on precedent giving it unprecedented giving a speech from the white house. We have seen more more president s being broken we saw the first president in 2008 where you had it president ial candidate not taking federal matching funds. After pledging he would do that. We saw his speech in denver outside the stadium. Certainly i think spoke to the enthusiasm behind him. We are getting new rules every day, and the American People have to be the final judges if someone is basically abusing the accouterments of office or not. In, despite what ive heard the press, there is nothing illegal about it. The one thing can say about donald trump is she is a great showman. That is to say everything he has done has been put on a very good show, and i think this convention is going to be a reflection of him and the American People will have to decide if he has overstepped or not. First, former u. N. Ambassador to the United Nations nikki haley in which she framed the argument in terms of foreignpolicy between the democrats and the republicans. Here is what she said. This president has a record of strength and success. The former Vice President has a record of weakness and failure. An, biden is good for ir great for communist china and a godsend to everyone who wants america to apologized to abstain and abandon our values. Donald trump takes a different approach. He is tough on china. And he took on isis. And won. And he tells the world what it needs to hear. Former congressman jim oran, your thoughts . It is nonsense. Joe biden was chairman of Foreign Relations committee for many, many years. He certainly believed in diplomacy. But he was not weak. Thei could talk about entreaties donald trump has made authoritarian leader, every dictator around the world. Think of how he has treated kim jongun, the leader of north korea. He says he fell in love with him. There is not a more ruthless stick hader on the planet ruthless did tater on the planet. Vladimir putin poisons anyone who dares to run against him. You will not speak up against the belarusian president. The reality is that donald trump that foreignpolicy leadership. It is a test whether we are atorsng to stand up to dict and nondemocratic authoritarian rulers. He has not been willing to do that. I want to get act to another point, though. We were talking about using the white house and the way in which this convention is being run. Of the producers that are being used that donald trump chose are the two producers of celebrity apprentice. This is about stage setting. Tvis about a made for reality show which much of the last 3. 5 years has been. And i think we need more sticking to the truth. We need the people who are less interested in the spotlight and everything being about them, and leaders that are more about the country. And its diversity. And what is affecting them now. For example, the pandemic, when you think about 170,000 americans having died. There should be more compassion about that, it seems to me, and empathy for what people are going through. They lost their jobs, millions and millions without jobs. We did not see that. I am not sure were going to see that. If we do not see it, i think the Republican Party really has dissed served the opportunity it has through a Political Party convention. What we did see is the argument of a cultural revelation, revolution one of the arguments put forth by one of the speakers tonight. South carolina senator tim scott. Our side is working on policy. But joe bidens radical democrats are trying to permanently transform what it means to be an american. Ake no mistake joe biden and Kamala Harris one a cultural revolution, a fundamentally different america. Them, they will turn our country into a socialist utopia. Has taught us that path only leads to pain and missouri, lets turn to republican tom davis. Your reaction. Alignmentspolitical today are cultural alignments and those on the republican side have always feared democrats want to turn us into europe. America is not europe. We were a nation of pioneers and there was a thesis at the turn saide 20th century that when we reached the manifest destiny, we would no longer be be pioneer country. It was not true, because each stage of immigrants that came brought their pioneer spirit. We have heard immigrants who came for the freedom and opportunity the country offered. They did not come as victims. They came with the promise america gave them that they could not get in their homelands. I think the victimization by democrats on part of some groups that say things are bad, republicans like at this as a welcoming country for those who obey the rules. Given the history tim scott has had personally, i thought they did a good job of that tonight. Tim moran, the final word. I was not impressed but they have three more days to show they understand america and that they care about the millions of least who are jobless, at a couple 100,000 that will lose their lives because of inadequate leadership when dealing with the pandemic. I think people want someone who can relate to them. I did not see that tonight. Create aattempt to different world, one that is not real. Are not going to be invaded by socialists or rioters. We need to come together and that should be the message of this convention, as the democratic one. I do not think that was the message, that we all need to come together to find things in common and together we can make this an even greater country. That was not the message we heard tonight and i think Republican Party is not understanding that. Democrat, joining us from virginia and tom davis from vienna, virginia.
