Delaware putting joe biden over the top. He represented delaware and the u. S. Senate for 30 plus years. Tonight, he officially became the democratic nominee. Heres how it happened. Thank you to all of our delegations. I am pleased to announce that Vice President joe biden has officially been nominated by the Democratic Party as our candidate for president of the United States. Vice President Biden is hereby invited to deliver an acceptance speech. Thank you very, very much, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you all. It means the world to me and my family and i will see you on thursday. Thank you, thank you, thank you that is how it unfolded. Alexi is joining us from wilmington, delaware. A very different convention tonight, a very different acceptance by joe biden. Tell us what your reaction has been so far. There are not many balloons or confetti falling from my hotel room or sitting on the floor behind me. I am stuck in this hotel until they give their live remarks wednesday and thursday. Tonights theme about leadership mattering and presenting a contrast in leadership between joe biden and President Trump came through in a lot of ways. Not just in the Foreign Policy side, but really to his character. We saw his wife introduced herself to the American People really for the first time in this campaign at the level that she did tonight. But she also helped paint a picture of not just joe biden the candidate, but the family at large, which really helps the campaign sell this message to the country that this is us as a family unit. This is the type of family and values that drive us when no one is looking and this is how joe biden would govern if elected president. I think that is a powerful contrast that they will try to put up against President Trump as the election continues. That moment when he talked about losing his first wife and how jill made the family whole, the setting at the high school where dr. Jill biden was a former teacher, and the backdrop of so many parents preparing to send their kids to school, most schools being held virtually. I thought that was a really interesting choice. If this campaign and this election becomes an ugly, impassioned battle and debate over schools reopening, which it already is. We already see the president moving in one direction that joe biden is not moving in. Biden canat dr. Jill help the campaign make their argument. Biden, as a teacher, has Actual Experience and authority to speak about this issue. In her remarks, it was not clinical, it was not just the facts and science, she talked a lot about the intangibles. The atmosphere of being at a school, the colors, the feeling, these things that parents are of course missing, but students are missing out on as we are debating the right way to move forward. Heres one of those moments you are referring to. He will do for your family what he did for ours, bring us together and make us whole, carry us forward in our time of need, keep the promise of america for all of us. [laughter] mr. Biden great. I love you. How are you . I am jill bidens husband. You can see why she is a love of my life, the rock of our family. She never gives herself much credit, but the truth is, she is the strongest person i know. She loves fiercely, cares deeply. Nothing stops her when she sets her mind to getting something right. That from wilmington, delaware earlier tonight. Contrasted that with the speech we heard last night from former first Lady Michelle obama. Michelle obama spent a lot of time talking about President Trumps, as she calls it, unfitness for office, this i did that he is not fit for president , that he is not up to the task. She was simply stating that kind of matteroffactly, this guy who we are all elected is not ready to do this job. Tonight, we hear jill biden really humanizing joe biden for the American People. That is interesting when i think about how republicans or President Trump are trying to brand joe biden and turn him into this bogeyman. It has so far not worked a large part because the American People know joe biden. They know that joe biden is not the person that donald trump is painting him to be. Now that dr. Jill biden is coming in and painting a fuller picture of who he is as a man, it could cut away at Donald Trumps ability to rebrand him. Michelle obama really focused on President Trump not being up for the job. Jill biden focused a lot on why joe biden is up for the job of being president. Whats the headline tonight at axios. Com . Upeveryone will have to sign to see the first sentence tomorrow morning. Everything we have been talking about with jill biden. The other thing that we are going to be talking about tomorrow and i think for the foreseeable future is the virtual rollcall. I cannot stop thinking about the fact that in a Global Pandemic that has otherwise forced us all to stay at home, that virtual rollcall that took us to all 50 states and the different territories around the country really was a good way to travel in an otherwise kind of stagnant time. I think that is interesting. Joe biden said himself at the Virtual Event that the virtual model for the a way forward for conventions in the future. It began at about 9 45 eastern time and then moved into the 10 00 hour, which is important, because that is the one hour that the broadcast networks agreed to carry live. That is exactly right. What is interesting is that americans are sing the breadth and depth and diversity of the party as people are standing in ohio, hawaii. That diversity can be harder to point out when you are all kind of jammed into a crowd, you are just a sea of delegates in a normal convention hall. This is really putting americans in all these different states, seeing all these backgrounds, seeing different parts of the country while they are watching on primetime cable that they maybe have never even visited in their life or will not visit for a long time because of this pandemic. Give us a sense of whats going to happen tomorrow. Senator harris will accept the vp nomination. What else will you be looking for in the second half of this Virtual Convention . As you mentioned, senator harris tomorrow. I think that will be the big picture ticket item for tomorrow. Joe biden on thursday closing it out. But we are going to see different themes emerging. Of course, today was about leadership. We are going to see how the Democratic Party continues to make the case for joe biden. These first two days have focused on republicans and brought in a lot of republican voices. She will be on the job tomorrow and thursday inside the arena, as the president ial and Vice President ial nominee accepted the dnc nomination accept the dnc nomination. Thanks. Thanks. Tomorrow evening, the speeches will include senator elizabeth warren, a former 2016 and 2020 democratic president ial candidate on the 2016 democratic nominee Hillary Clinton also speaking tomorrow evening. Former president barack obama and then the acceptance speech by senator harris as the vp nominee. We want to begin with tom davis, former republican congressman from virginia. It seemed to me, as we were talking just before we went on air, the different coalitions within the Democratic Party playing out tonight. Can you elaborate on that . The Party Coalitions that elected bush have changed. The parties are switching. Mccain, get on romney, bush, they are not part of the trump coalition. Trump maintains very high favorables among the new republican coalition. Some of the higher income and a educated voters in the suburbs have been a problem. They are very strengthened innovaro areas across the country in rural areas across the country. The Democratic Coalition right now reminds me of an organized conspiracy to seize power. They are united around one think, they dont like dino thing, they dont like donald trump. Bidenjohn kasichs joe who is going to veer towards the center . Or izzy Bernie Sanders is he Bernie Sanders . Think. S an individual, i decent fella. Ery i dont think you get much argument on those grounds. What does he stand for . The challenge for the Trump Campaign is, ok, you dont like how i have handled the coronavirus, what are you going to do . You wanted to let more chinese in here at a time when they were infecting the rest of the planet because ideologically, you thought it might be offensive to chinese. I closed it down. I think these issues are going to be flushed out over the next few weeks. Biden, over the long term, is going to have to come out of the basement and start answering some of these. If it is a personality fight at this point, i think biden probably wins it. But if they get into the issues, i think thats really what trump needs to be able to win. Typically, when the convention is taking place, the other party kind of lays low. That has not been the case with President Trump. Yesterday, he was in wisconsin and minnesota. Today, in iowa and arizona. How does the Trump Campaign thread the needle to get to 270 . You take a look at the last election and trump will have an outside chance of thing up maybe New Hampshire and nevada. Hes got to hold the states at this point. In iowa today, he declared several counties a disaster area , which will allow federal age to come in and help some of these people. It was a super tornado of some kind. It for up a lot of properties in a lot ofas tore up properties in those areas. He doesnt have a lot of room to bleed. The senate is the same thing. The senate is on a razors edge for republicans. As the president ial race goes, so is the senate likely to go. These states will get a lot of attention by both parties and both candidates. We now know how the rollcall of states involved evolved. How do you think it went from your standpoint . I loved everything about it. Being able to see visions of america and diversity in that rollcall state after state, people in their native dress, people speaking their languages, people just being americans all over the country was beautiful. I was very proud to see our michigan senator delivering michigans votes for the convention. It was beautifully done. I am proud of the Convention Team for pulling it off. I think america got to see america and do a little traveling safely from their home. It was good. Lets go through a couple of moments lets go through a couple of moments and get both of your reactions. Sally gates was very critical of was very critical of President Trump. He has used his position to benefit himself, rather than our country. He has traveled the rule of law trampled the rule of law, trying to weaponize our Justice Department to attack his enemies and protect his friends. Rather than standing up to vladimir putin, he funds over 8 ns over a dictator who is still trying to interfere in our elections. Hes even trying to sabotage our Postal Service to keep people from being able to vote. Fbi,onstant attacks on the free press, inspectors general, federal judges, they all have one purpose, to remove any check on his power. Was that effective . Absolutely effective. Heris an American Hero and words were powerful and strong and correct. I think the Convention Team on the speakers did a terrific job of building the case for the leadership that will be joe biden. The congressman asked, who is joe biden . He will be americas joe biden when he is the president of the United States. I think we are all getting more and more information about how he will lead and what will be very different about a Biden Administration from eight trump administration. Davis, as you know, from critics of the president , they are talking about the people who will be part of the Biden Cabinet expressing concern. S. Let me get to sally yate i certainly dont agree with everything she said that she is a very credible advocate. The minuted the fisa things went wrong there when you get into the Michael Flynn case. She has got a lot of credibility as basically an independent mind on a lot of these issues. I dont agree with everything that she said, but i think that she is a credible advocate as i look at the speakers tonight. What was your second question . In terms of who is going to be part of the Biden Cabinet. We are hearing that from critics of the democratic candidate. We dont know at this point and there will be a lot of scrambling. I think when obama got elected, he wanted to be a uniter, not a divider. But he had a democratic congress. Democrats said, dont reach out to them. I think biden will have the same kind of issues. If he wants to raise taxes, he will be doing that with democratic votes probably on reconciliation in the senate. Hes had a history of working across party lines. Youve got macro forces affecting the polarization at this point. November is just a constitutional formality. Youve got these media models which are kind of enforcers and these super pacs right and left that make it harder to cross party lines. I am sure it is the intention. There will be a lot of fighting. We will just have to see. Hes got a lot of coalition elements that will want a piece of him from different parts of that democratic collision. The difficult part coalition. The difficult part is trying to hold a coalition that is united against donald trump into a governing coalition. Heas i said last night, said, we will rule through competence and didnt draw a sharp line on the issues. They need to be careful if they get drawn into an issue debate. That they dont get too far afield. How do the democrats make that sharp contrast between donald trump and the democrats . We are making that every day. We made that tonight. We will continue to. Not justaign is to about donald trump. We are talking about issues that are important to the American People. An america that lifts up every citizen of this country. How important it is to protect health care and jobs, to take care of the least of us. Protect black and brown people from being attacked. All of those issues. Joe biden talks about all of those issues every time he talks. These issues that are so important. The contrast is so deep. We are showing it every day. Theres a strong case being made for joe biden, not just the case against donald trump. Heres former president bill clinton who accepted his own partys nomination in 1992. Deal for lossless should be a command center in sin of a storm center. One thing never changes. His determination to deny responsibility and shift the blame. The bug never stops there. You have to decide. Orther to renew his Contract Hire someone else. If you want to president who defines the job as spending hours each day watching tv, hes your man. Distracting and demeaning works great if you are trying to entertain or inflame. In a real crisis, it collapses like a house of cards. Covid doesnt respond to any of that. To be debt, you have to go to work to do with the facts. Our party is united in offering you a different choice. A go to work president. A downtoearth guy. A man with a mission to take responsibility, not shift the blame. Concentrate, not distract. Our choice is joe biden. That was bill clinton. It is a very different Democratic Party today than it was when bill clinton was president. A very different Democratic Party. Clintons strongest case, counties went for trump. Listen to clinton. It was a personal attack. Talking about Donald Trumps fables and mistakes he has made. The fact that he has operated differently. As a disrupter, you would expect that. I did not hear anything about where the issue differences are. The democrats have two lines. Once you start getting into issues in terms of the funding the police, medicare for all. It gets more divisive. Thats the difficulty with their coalition. The expectations on the part of the left and the ability of President Biden to deliver that and hold the rest of that coalition together. We will see where he goes. If the Trump Campaign is willing to drop biden out. Ofht now, hes in the safety his basement, not out there every day answering questions. Thats a good place for him to be. Thatlot of criticism representative alexandria ocasiocortez only had one minute in her nominating speech. We will hear from Hillary Clinton tomorrow. Too much on the past and not enough on the future . Its important that we continue to build, talk about where we have been so we can talk about where we are going. There was a lot of future tonight. Officials whoted participated in 19 note address from all over the country, including michigan. Its about the future as well. We are doing a terrific job of highlighting the future of the party while remembering our past and talking about the issues that brought us to where we are right now. I want to remind folks, as this builds, we started out talking about leadership and the importance of leadership. We moved to joe biden in the heart and soul of the family. The real joe biden that a lot of people didnt know. The Convention Planners did a terrific job of moving us through that story and getting us to that final point. Dr. Jill join us told us the story of their family. It was beautiful. Heres that moment with alexandria ocasiocortez, nominating senator Bernie Sanders earlier tonight. Unsustainable brutality of an economy that rewards explosive and equality inequality for the few at the expense of longterm stability for the many. Who organized the historic Grassroots Campaign to reclaim our democracy. In a time when millions of people in the United States are looking for deep, Systemic Solutions to our crises of massive action, unemployment, and lack of health care, out of the love for all people, i hereby second the nomination of senator Bernard Sanders of vermont for president of the United States of america. You served in the house of representatives. Have you seen a freshman representative gain so much notoriety and attention in their first term . I dont think i have. We had sonny bono. Weve had some hollywood types. I dont think so. Who did she beat . Joe crowley. Shes been a meteor since then. Out,as set her own vector put her own course. She has more followers on some of the social media than established politicians. A couple other moments i want to get your reaction to. The video by cindy mccain on her late husband john mccain and the endorsement of colin powell. Let me begin with you on that. More of that leadership we were talking about earlier. I was moved by cindy mccain telling us the story of the friendship between those two former senators. Not i thought that was terrific. Talking about how important that relationship was. Even when they got to the senate and they were on opposite sides, they were able to come together as friends. It speaks volumes to the fact that joe biden has been able to work across the aisle since hes been in washington. The will bring together this coalition of democrats to work hard for america after hes elected president. Cindy mccain and colin powell did a terrific job of telling the story of why jones joe bidens leadership is leadership we need right now. You headed up the republican greg rational Campaign Committee for the house. What was the strategy in those remarks tonight . Independent and republicans who have not been happy with President Trump. What better symbol and cindy mccain . Colin powell is a respected figure. He has not resort endorsed a republican for president since 2004. Hes part of this realignment that we talked about earlier. The Republican Party has weakened itself in the suburbs. They are going stronger in rural areas. The Republican Base has migrated from the country club to the country. Let me just say. For aoc, democrats do not want to spotlight her on a night when they are trying to go after republican independent voters. Shes a lightning rod. She inspires a lot of enthusiasm among some elements. When you are talking about swing voters, thats not her forte. She comes from a safe democratic district in new york city. She does not have to talk to independents or republicans to win. Thats why they put her out to have a minute tonight. If you wanted to fire up the base, she does a better job of that. That was not the message tonight. Your comment . I think that nomination speeches are typically not that long. Trying to keep to the time limit so we can manage to fit everything into the hours we have. Large faction a of our party, a group of folks that are enthusiastic about supporting joe biden, making sure he gets elected and we make the changes that we need to make. Net way, the only to get to where we need to go on the issues that aoc and her supporters care about is to get joe biden in the office right now. Its the only way to do that. These folks understand that. It will be voting in droves. Peoplee more and more highlighted. Its tough. The morbid people we elect, the more people we have to put on the stages. Theres not enough room for everybody. Governor bill clinton in 1988 , the applause when he said in conclusion. He thought he ended his career at that point. Let me say this about aoc. Leader and has a lot of followers in the party. She was on the losing side of the president ial nomination. The fact that they gave her a minute speaks to their strategy of going after swing voters. The republicans went through the tea party state. It started to shift the balance within the Republican Party. Democrats are in the early stages of the herbal tea party. Aoc and the squad and a number of members starting to move the Democratic Party left. It will be a struggle for whoever wins to try to govern in an atmosphere. Heres jerome powell. You will never doubt that he will stand with our friends and up to our adversaries. Never the other way around. He will drop our diplomats not the flattery of dictators and desperate. He will make it his job to know when anyone dares to threaten us. He will stand up for adversaries with strength and experience. They will know he means business. I support joe biden because beginning on day one, he will restore American Leadership and our moral authority. How big of an issue is Foreign Policy in the selection . I think they are trying to mcdonnell trump look like some kind of naive person who has just gotten off of the talking truck. They put together a middle east peace plan where the united arab ,mirates is recognizing israel which will pave the way for other arab nations recognizing israel for the first time. Colin powell was the architect of the iraq war. Most of these president ial candidates denounce it as a major failure. Trump was a disruptor. Dealposed the iran nuclear , which i think was a bad deal. A lot of people have come to that conclusion overtime. There was some disagreement within the foreignpolicy establishment. When you see these former secretaries of state coming out on this, it really goes back to some decisions that were made. Im not sure they were popular. Donald trump is on the other side from them. You are talking to voters. We heard about health care tonight, covid19, the economy. Policy, comes to foreign where does that fit in the category of issues that voters are talking to you about . Tonight, we did a Great Service of helping people understand that biden comes with the experience and shops to lead on the foreign stage. Its an important part of the job. We are very focused on health care and covid and a lack of response to covid by the federal government. We also know that its important for us to return to our standing in the foreign realm as well. We want to make sure that the voters recognize that Vice President biden has the experience. Hes been in that room. Hes been in that same room that the president is in. He understands how important it is to lead with strength and power. Vice President Biden is ready to do that from day one. You mentioned the rollcall of states. What was the other moment you took away from tonight . That empty classroom that dr. Jill biden stood in, it was riveting. Think about whats happening right now in this country, the fear that parents have about sending their children back into classrooms with covid still rampant throughout the country. That empty classroom was powerful, as was her speech. That moment was a good take away from you. I will take away the herbal tea party for the democrats. The tea party for the republicans. How do these parties moving in Different Directions come together and compromise and govern . We see this right now. A new cares package. They cant come together on some basic needs on the covid virus. Basic extensions of some existing programs. They cant come together on the very simple things. The American People will look at this, there are fingers pointing both ways. The shouldve been easy. They tried to jazz it up. They make too many promises. I hope they will get it figured out at the end of the day, like they did with the first package. It has taken an inordinate amount of time. Checks could gone out. People are suffering. Donald trump didnt cause the virus. We forget that. When you take a look at the states with democratic governors, california, new york, these are hardly paradigms of the way that you would combat the virus. There is not a consensus on what shouldve been done. You talk about strong science and losing people who test positive into nursing homes. Countryhe board, the has struggled with this. What is bothersome, we were not able to work together. It became a political football. Donald trump did not cause this virus. From the other side, i dont hear any answers. We will keep things closed until we get a vaccine. Thats no answer, particularly with a bad economy. When you talk about helping everybody, the Unemployment Rate among hispanics and africanamericans was the lowest in reported history under donald trump. Everybody was being helped. You have to ask yourself, who will bring the economy back . Who wants to raise taxes and bring back regulation . And be slowed opening up . . Or somebody that understands we have to rebound . If the Trump Campaign can move to that, they will be on sure footing. Are boggednt, we down. We will see how the republicans responded street. Issues that will continue to come up tomorrow. It has become a tradition for first ladies to address Political Party conventions. Ahead, we will watch speeches from four of them nancy reagan, barbara bush, hillary, clinton and michelle obama. Nancy reagan had been first lady for four years when she spoke at the republican National Convention in 1984. She was a film actress when she first met ronald reagan. They married, and mrs. Reagan became first lady of california when her husband was governor. And later, first lady of the United States when he was elected the 40th president. Michael dever, an aide and friend of the reagans, said without nancy, there would have been no governor reagan and no president reagan. Here are Nancy Reagans brief remarks to the delegates at the Republican Convention 36 years ago
