Even before inauguration, we had seen a historic financial crisis, irresponsibility on wall street had spread out to main street prayed we had to move fast not just in 100 days we had to move in the first month to get the recovery act passed. We are now in a situation were not only driven economic crisis, we also have a Public Health crisis to boot. Tell me a little bit about how you are seeing the current economic crisis and how you are think about the economy right now. So well mr. President theres three pieces i see. One, weve got to sustain and keep people from going under forever. There are already 10000 businesses not likely to open up significant a number of Small Business and minority business number two, when they are able to come back they are not only able to keep their folks employed on the payroll, but they are able to cover overhead, cover the additional expenses paid for the example you can open without social distancing, masks, test all these things cost a lot of money. Theyre all added costs. So this should be able to have that added cost to stay open for the good of the country. But the next stage of this is going to be if the stimulus can keep people afloat, you may have to deal with recovery. The recovery is Building Back. Its not just Building Back but Building Back better. We have to change the way which we deal with allowing people an opportunity to make a living. That includes childcare, making significant investments in infrastructure so people can make just not not making sure we build up an entire new Public Health system make sure everybody has healthcare. Now we have a chance we can add a public option now. But this guy is in court in the middle of a pandemic trying to take away the protection for 100 Million People with preexisting conditions. I dont think he has any sense of empathy, i dont think he can associate it all. So you and i had experience dealing with health crises. , Public Health crises. In each instance, what you and i understood, and why i have so much confidence you are going to be able to deal with covid and the way other countries with our kind of resources are dealing with the right now, which is smartly, i have confidence youre going to listen to the experts. And you are going to Pay Attention to the science. And you are not going to quit on trying to actually bend down the curve of disease and transmission rates. So would we left office you had set up a Pandemic Office within the white house. We had people from the cdc, 44 people in china, we knew pandemic diseases these were not good be the oil into ever occur. The goal was to create an Early Warning system around the world by creating International Cooperation so when you did see it coming, your time to prepare. I know how deeply you care about american families, and any loss of life that is preventabl preventable, i fear president of the United States its your job to try to prevent it. One of the things that you said were important to we understood this during the financial crisi crisis, you cannot separate out the Public Health crisis from the economy. If you want the economy growing again, people have to feel safe. What you did what all great president s do is they persuade. I think with obamacare in daca, and what you want to do is the quickest, fastest, way to get everyone covered. The only person i told the detail was you because you had a right to know exactly. We only had months left to go when id sit there and watch them in the bed and pain watching him die of what would happen if his insurance was able to come in which they could have done before past obamacare and said youve outrun your insurance, youre going to suffer the last five months of your life, you are on your own. All of the things that it did that was so profound an impact on people it was like it took them a while until he started to take it away to realize what was happening. You and i both know what its like to have somebody you love get really sick. And in some cases to lose somebody. That loss is compounded when you see the stress on their faces because they are worried they are being a burden on their families, they are worried about whether the insurance is going to cover the treatments that they need. I could not be prouder of what we got done. 20Million People have Health Insurance it did not have it because of what we did. But, you remember when we were talking about this, i always used to say the Affordable Care act, obamacare is like a starter house. The first house you get, its not the end of the process it is the beginning of the process. So we used to say this was a starter house clients its like Social Security when it was first passed exactly right. When Social Security was first passed it was this now, Social Security now, we cut building it up. Kept making it better. So that starter house they got inside the house they realized man less is better than being on the cold number one. Number two, they said hot got a guy banging down the house trying to take down the house. I didnt realize the reason i had this house is because of them. Its happening now as you have so many people now i cannot think of any time since the flu in 1918, it appears that had to beat totally thoroughly aware of how vulnerable they were. Now you have people going oh my lord, so look youre absolutely right it is hard to fathom anybody wanting to take away peoples healthcare in the middle of a major Public Health crisis. So and offer nothing. So and when an unemployment is in double digits there is another issue thats been on our minds and was on our minds during my presidency. That is the issue of race in america. And how communities of color are policed, how police are interacting and often times acting in ways that are racially biased after the george floyd tragedy, what we have seen is this extraordinary mobilization across the country of people of every walk of life, every race, every creed, saying we are past time to do something about this. We understand we are not going to fix it all in one day but we are going to take it seriously and start now. We had experience with this during my administration, our response was not to ignore these problems our response was wedded 21st Century Policing task force that we put together that drew police chiefs, academics, young members of black lives matter, all in a single conversation and we arrived at a series of recommendations that are still pertinent to this day. So we got to the notion that if a Police Department is engaging in a practice and pattern that was in violation of basic civil rights and civil liberties, the Justice Department of the United States of america, the federal government would intervene and stop it. You authorize to put in place a whole range of things that would increase what most cops, the guys i grew up with who became cops and firefighters are priest, i was not qualified to do any one of them. The point is they know they need more guidance. So i think this is a process we are all going through. Something i have always admired about you, joe, your willingness to listen and learn. It is a sign of leadership when you are willing to hear other peoples experiences. At hazard youth communities have been under invested. I have to with hiring the fact that if you get on the phone, applying for a job, sending your resume, your name is john you might get called if your name is jamaal you might not. So its about being able to accumulate wealth and be in a position, im watching my whole life working in the city. Black entrepreneurs are a successful as white entrepreneurs given the same circumstance. So we are in a moment right now my daughters your granddaughters are involved in this where this nextgeneration is saying we have a lease and all people being equal. And we dont see that operating out there, were going to do something about it. I think the key right now, this is why have so much confidence in your administration wanting to be a partner in harnessing that energy. Bringing about concrete reforms, concrete steps, not just in the criminal Justice System in policing, but with respect to investment, job, business development, but its going to send a signal regard, concern, Community Around the country. Policy is important. Laws are important. But you know what else is important . What kind of values are you communicating question. Bingo. Student we want to create a world that we want our kids and crankcase to grow up in. We have to do a whole lot better than what were doing now. So we got a hell of an opportunity. He got a hell of an opportunity. Look what happening gives 77 American People saying we gotta do something about this. So that was a big change when you and i were in office. There are two ways in which president s motivate people. By doing something really important and people go oh, order do something really bad. This guy has generated a sense out there that people are waking up to he ran by deliberately dividing people from the moment he came down that escalator. People are now going, i dont want my kid growing up that way. You know what its like as much as anybody. To be in the white house during a crisis. You know what its like to have to get laws passed through congress. You notice like to do with foreign leaders. You know what its like and how lonely it can be to make tough decisions were not every decision will be perfect, but youve got to make them. Youve got to take responsibility for i have seen you with families that have gone through tragedies. In that thing ive got confidence in, joe, is your heart, character, and the fact you are going to be able to reassemble the kind of government that cares about people, brings people together and for all of these specific policies we are going to need more than anything, is just that basic decency and understanding about what is best in america. I took people are going to be hungry for part i look forward to working with you and do whatever i can to help. I have confidence in your commitment that we seize this moment we have right now. So bank united faith the American People. Partxt, jill biden taking in a roundtable discussion about the coronavirus. This also features Eddie Bernice johnson and marc veasey. Hi, everybody.
