Good afternoon, everyone. I am delighted to welcome secretary pompeo back to london. We will be discussing a full range of issues today. We are going through a range of challenges in the world, fair to say, but also great opportunities, and britain and the United States are absolutely clean and focused. Aboute spoken today serious concerns about the situation in hong kong, particularly in relation to the National Security legislation. We talked about the u. K. Office, what we are doing in extending the extradition treaty, extending the arms embargo to hong kong. We will be meeting together with will be eyes and we discussing the next at the next g7. We talked about ongoing discussions with relation to 5g and how we can diversify telecoms and 5g networks, and also learning the lessons from the coronavirus about p. P. E. And other things and what we can do to facilitate that. We also talked about the free trade negotiations. We are looking for a meeting british and american businesses shortly. We think we can be even better than that. There are every morning just under 1. 5 million americans who go to work for british companies, and the same, brits going to work for american families. Tradek it is a winwin deal that we are committed to achieve between our two countries. Good for jobs and good for consumers as well. The u. K. Is clear that we need to work with our american friends and also with other partners together in the International System to protect our freedoms and interests, and stand up as you have shown in hong kong, for our values. We are more influential when we Work Together. We also discussed iran, russia, the middle east peace process, the broader challenges of need to keep the things together in relation to n. A. T. O. I think across the full range of challenges, of which there are many, we are always aat we lot stronger and more effective when we Work Together, and that is what we will continue to do in the weeks and months ahead. Pompeo thank you. Good afternoon. I want to thank foreign secretary sec. Raab for being here today. I know it is not easy to host events especially at this time, so i want to thank the staff for putting it together. It was a very productive conversation. We begun with the challenge presented by the Chinese Party and the covid19 virus of that china. Ted in wuhan, on behalf of the american people, i extend my condolences to the british people for your losses from this preventable pandemic. Exploitation to further its own interests has been this graceful. President xi jinping has shown the world the partys true face. We have seen it militarize the South China Sea and begin a deadly confrontation with india. I would like i would like to congratulate the British Government for its response to these challenges. You have joined other free nations to condemn chinas broken promises. You have generously opened your. Oors yesterday you suspended your exhibition your extradition treaty. We support those choices. We think well done. I will meet later today with hong kong Democracy Advocate nathan law. I am sure those will be eyeopening and important discussions too. We completed two rounds of freetrade discussions. A third round is scheduled for later this month. It is a primary focus of the United States to bring this to a closure as quickly as possible. I spoke with Prime Minister this morning about this. I hope we can get it finalized before too long. Will learnve, we how we get to the right place, reducing trade barriers and get opportunities for Small Businesses and create good jobs for working people in the United Kingdom and for americans. Finally, i discussed with the Prime Minister the importance of extending the arms embargo on the Islamic Republic of iraq. We recognize that allowing the embargo to expire would have major implications for Regional Security and stability. I want to thank the british people and the u. K. Government for helping lead the International Maritime security construct in the gulf of oman. Dom and i were talking about the special relationship, days like today translates the ability to have candid discussions on important that cut to the heart of how we can secure freedom for our two countries and be forces for good around the world. Sec. Raab we are taking a couple questions. Reporter [indiscernible] why have you turned a blind eye . [indiscernible] sec. Raab you mentioned the suggestion that the u. K. Actively avoided investigating russia. That wasnt in the report. P. Was the comment of one m we categorically reject that. If you look, weve got a long period recognizing the significant threat posed by russia to the u. K. Russia is a top National Security priority. We call out russia when it is necessary in relation to the Cyber Attacks on facilities in the u. S. , the u. K. , and canada. We are not for a second complacent about the threat russia poses. The question was about whether we would like the u. K. To do more to confront china. We dont think about it that way. We think the entire world needs to Work Together to ensure that every country, including china, behave in an International System in ways that are appropriate with the international order. You cant make claims for maritime regions that you no longer have. You cant engage in coverups and coopt in National Institutions like the world health organization. We want every nation to understand freedom and democracy and value that and know they are important to their own sovereign country to be successful, to understand this threat the Chinese Communist party is posing to them and work collectively to restore what is rightfully ours. All we simply asked for is a fair, reciprocal agreement with china. We no longer want them to steal intellectual property. Americans work hard to get a patent and trademark and the chinese steel that from americans. We want every nation to work against that kind of activity. It is not about language. We want every nation to Work Together to push back against the Chinese Communist partys efforts in every dimension that i described to you today. That certainly includes the United Kingdom. This includes every country. We hope we can build out a coalition that understands this threat and to more collectively convince the Chinese Communist party it is not in their best interests to engage in this kind of behavior. Reporter mr. Secretary, mr. Pompeo, what is the ultimate goal [indiscernible] doesnt want to make certain reforms . Does it want to make certain reforms . [indiscernible] sec. Pompeo i will take your question too. [laughter] we focus on all parties. The reality is a result of u. S. Sanctions. We have a clearsighted perspective in what that means. We have taken a decision based on that. Mike and i always have constructive discussions and the vast majority of the time we worked together very well, as we have with our partners in hong kong, as you can see from the measures we have taken. Sec. Pompeo the Prime Ministers decision was reflected in what he thinks is best for the people of the United Kingdom. I have no doubt about that. We had a number of conversations about a broad range of issues, not all of which we have come to the same conclusion about. I think that decision was made not because the United States said it was a good decision, but because leadership in the United Kingdom thought that was the right thing to do for the people of the United Kingdom. As respect to huawei, we dont have an end state. For thean end state people of the United States, that the data that belongs to americans does not end up in the hands of the Chinese Communist party. Our efforts are not aimed at one particular business, they are aimed at protecting National Security. We will take actions against any ntity that uses telecommuting intro structure that poses a threat to the United States, whether that is military information, or the average citizens private information to not be in the hands of the chinese National Security apparatus. No american should engage in normal activity on their cell phone or laptop no american should have the risk that that data ends up in the hands of the Chinese Communist party. E sanctions against we willainst protect american National Security. Thank you. Announcer cspans washington journal. Every day we are taking your calls live on the air on the news of the day.
