Whether the actual nominations might happen here, it is all up in the air. People are still talking. There are contracts involving the convention and visitors bureau. Even the charlotte hornets, who have the arena and have contracted that. There is still a lot of talking. Host what about the reaction within the Hospitality Industry banking on revenue for the region . Jim the Hospitality Industry is looking at this as a lifeline. No doubt they had a rocky last two or three months, lost business, restaurants boarded up or closed. With the news of the convention leaving, there was one business we had a story on this morning that is closing because that was like the last straw for them. It was a business downtown not far from the Spectrum Center where the convention would have been held. Businesses are looking at it as a lost opportunity. The Host Committee of the convention is still trying to negotiate and work out some deal where they can still salvage something. Host what is the reaction within the community . Are they blaming the governor, the president . Jim republicans obviously are blaming the governor. He pretty much stuck to his guns on opening. He doesnt believe at this point he can give a guarantee they can build an arena with 19,000 people in august with no social distancing and no masks. The president made that request in a phone call to the governor the friday before memorial day. It appears to have been a relatively cordial conversation. The president said he was holding out for a guarantee of a full convention venue, and the governor said we cant do that. The governor is gradually reopening the state like others in the country. A couple days later the president tweeted they were moving. Host lets talk about the politics of North Carolina. If you look at the returns of four years ago in which donald trump wins 50 of the vote, is it a battleground state in the last few campaign cycles . Jim North Carolina is a purple state. Democrats and republicans are relatively evenly divided. While President Trump carried North Carolina, so did Governor Cooper. It was a narrow win, but a win. Republicans continued to dominate both houses of the legislature. They had a lot of redistricting challenges. The districts they have drawn years ago redistricting is a must an annual event almost an annual event here. That might impact the legislature here. We are not sure yet. The lawsuits involving redistricting have shown even while republicans were winning the general assembly, democrats got more votes for congress the same year. It is a balanced state. Cities are getting more democratic and the rural areas are getting redder. Host what is the swing area in the swing state . Jim the swing areas are the suburbs. Some of the closed in suburbs are trending democratic in countries like mecklenburg where raleigh is. Nose counties have republican legislators anymore. They are all democrats. The swing counties are generally in the suburbs. Host charlotte has seen a remarkable change in the last 20 to 30 years in the time you have been covering the city. Jim certainly. In mecklenburg county, it is pretty balanced in terms of partisan representation on the council and county commission. It wasnt that long ago that republicans dominated the county council. That doesnt happen anymore. The city council has two republicans left. They are in safe republican districts. County has been trending carolina eyes on north not only for the president ial race, but competitive house and senate races. Tillis thepublican tom incumbent is facing cal cunningham. Cunningham has outraised him in the last quarter. That will be a competitive race. North carolina will make a big difference in who controls the senate. Definitely it is a state democrats are targeting in the senate. In the house, there is a guarantee of picking up two new seats because of these consistent redistrictings that have occurred due to court orders. Democrats will pick up two more seats, giving them a total of five in North Carolina. There is another seat that is competitive, the eighth district of North Carolina. North carolina will become a swing state in the battle for congress too. Host why is senator tillis in some political trouble right now . Faced skepticism from his own party. Whore was a primary opponent attacked him from the right. He dropped out early on, but he spent a lot of money against senator tillis. Some republicans got wary of him. Senator tillis tried to back away from the president a year and a half ago over some powers the president wanted. Oped in thean Washington Post saying he would be independent of the president on this issue, then he backed off and ended up voting with the president. That engendered skepticism from republicans on him. Made anysure he has inroads with the independent base in North Carolina. Host lets bring it back to the convention and the sense of residents across the state. Conventiondoes the to another city, to you think the president will pay a price in november . Jim not really, not just because of that. Republicans are trying to put the blame on Governor Cooper for that. I dont know that voters will hold the convention i dont know that it mattered much to a lot of people in North Carolina other than the charlotte business community. I think it mattered to republicans who thought it would give them a boost in recruiting volunteers and generating excitement for the senate and congressional races. I dont think it is enough that it would cost the president much in North Carolina. Host we will check in with you often as the Campaign Continues to unfold.
